By Desert Star Staff NASA has just discovered a potential “super-Earth” outside our solar system which is located comfortably inside its star’s habitable zone, meaning it could be ripe for human colonization. While monitoring the star named GJ 357, which sits just 31 light-years away in the constellation Hydra, the space agency’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) caught the star dimming every 3.9 days, indicating the presence of at least one transiting exoplanet. GJ 357 d

After some further solar sleuthing, the researchers came across a clutch of planets, the most promising of which, GJ 357 d, has conditions which indicate that it could sustain life. Given its position relative to its star, the NASA boffins estimate that it receives similar amounts of solar energy that Mars receives from our sun. So far, so good. “This is exciting, as this is humanity’s first nearby super-Earth that could harbor life,” gushed one of the lead astronomers, Lisa Kaltenegger. They are now hoping to discover that the planet

has a dense atmosphere that can trap enough heat to warm it and allow liquid water on its surface. Without an atmosphere, however, the planet likely has an equilibrium temperature of around -64 Fahrenheit (-53 Celsius), which would make it a frozen hellscape and likely nigh on impossible to colonize without expending vast resources – ice picks at the ready, everyone. Current estimates suggest the planet weighs at least 6.1 times Earth’s mass and

Tulsi Gabbard dismantles Kamala Harris over her prosecutor record

By Desert Star Staff Democratic presidential hopeful Tulsi Gabbard slammed rival Kamala Harris for her actions as California’s top cop during the second round of debates, winning over viewers across social media. Gabbard dominated Google searches for the

entire country following the Democratic primary debates on Wednesday. Buoyed by her confrontation with California Senator Harris, who has downplayed her “tough-on-crime” record as the state’s attorney general in favor of a warmer, fuzzier progressive look.

“When you were in a position to make a difference or an impact in people’s lives, you did not.” The Hawaii congresswoman said, pointing to Harris’ reactionary pursuit of low-level drug offenders and her controversial decision to keep prisoners locked up to use them to fight

California’s deadly wildfires. “Worse yet, in the case of those who were on death row – innocent people – you actually blocked evidence from being revealed that would have freed them until you were forced to do so,” Gabbard declared. “There is no excuse for that.” The people who suffered under your reign as prosecutor, you owe them an apology. CNN gave Harris two chances to respond, but she was unable to deny Gabbard’s claims. Merely insisting she had “done the work” of reforming the state’s criminal justice system and defending her record in vague terms. Despite topping the Google list, some users on Twitter noticed Gabbard’s name wasn’t among the top trends for them. “Why did you remove Tulsi from trending @ Twitter?” one user asked. Shortly after, she did briefly appear at the top, though

only with her first name, and closely followed by ‘Assad,’ for Syrian President Bashar Assad – ‘Assad apologist’ being the establishment’s goto rebuke against Gabbard. It was used as a desperate attempt at deflection by Harris’ press secretary, who spent the debate tweeting about Assad. Whether Twitter tried to ‘shadow-ban’ Gabbard or not, her message has been suppressed by Big Tech before. She is suing Google for inexplicably removing her ads for several hours following the first round of debates when her name was also the most-searched. The ads remained in place this time. Deepening the mystery, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey donated $5,600 to Gabbard’s campaign – the maximum individual donation – the day after the first round of debates, triggering a backlash from his establishment media pals.

Senate passes massive budget deal that lifts the debt ceiling NBC PS News Staff The Senate passed Thursday a massive budget deal that would stave off the looming threat of a potential default on US debt and prevent automatic spending cuts to domestic and military funding. The final vote was 6728, and the bill will now go to President Donald Trump for his signature. The vote followed days of grumbling from GOP senators about the cost of the package and uncertainty surrounding who will support it. The agreement, negotiated between congressional leaders and the Trump administration, represents a significant bipartisan compromise but the vote in the GOP-led Senate has proven slightly tougher than some expected among Republicans. In-floor remarks ahead of the vote, Senate Majority Leader Mitch

McConnell called the proposal “a strong deal.” “In recent weeks, key officials on President Trump’s team engaged in extensive negotiations with Speaker Pelosi and the Democratic House,” the Kentucky Republican said. “Given the exigencies of divided government, we knew that any bipartisan agreement on funding levels would not appear perfect to either side. But the administration negotiated a strong deal.” On Wednesday, McConnell wouldn’t directly answer if more than half his caucus would vote for the bill, only replying to CNN: “It’s going to pass.” The deal, which passed the House last week, suspends the debt limit through July 2021 and sets top-line levels for defense and non-defense spending for the next two fiscal years. It establishes a $1.37 trillion budget

agreement in the first year, with $738 billion for defense spending and $632 billion in non-defense spending for the fiscal year 2020. The vote is a hard one for conservatives in the Senate, but Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of Defense Mark Esper have all made their wishes known, and they’ve been making calls, but this is a hard vote if you campaigned on slashing spending. Trump encouraged senators to back it in a tweet Thursday morning, telling GOP members in the chamber to “Go for it.” “Budget Deal is phenomenal for our Great Military, our Vets, and Jobs, Jobs, Jobs!” he tweeted. “Two-year deal gets us past the Election. Go for it Republicans; there is always plenty of time to CUT!” It’s up to Trump to sign it, but assuming that happens, the deal doesn’t

stop the government from shutting down at the end of September, but it does set the top-line budget numbers for two years, end sequestration and raises the debt ceiling for two years. That’s a lot, but there is still work for appropriators to decide how to spend the money that was just allocated. That is already underway and will continue throughout the August recess. In simple terms, Congress will have just decided how much their household budget will be for the next two years; they still have to decide how much of that money goes to groceries, vacations and kids’ back to school supplies. And, there is always plenty more to fight about when you get into those details. Still, many conservative Republicans worry the package is just too expensive. “At the end of the day, there are tremendous amounts of new spending, way over and above what we

orbits the star every 55.7 days at approximately 20 percent of Earth’s distance from the sun. For now, though, the planet’s exact size and composition remain unknown, however, but if it is indeed rocky, it would be roughly one to two times the Earth’s size. “If GJ 357 d were to show signs of life, it would be at the top of everyone’s travel

list – and we could answer a 1,000-year-old question on whether we are alone in the cosmos,” Kaltenegger added. TESS, which is designed to comb the universe for habitable worlds, also found two other planets orbiting the star. GJ 357 b is estimated to be about 22 percent larger than Earth, and it orbits the star 11 times closer than Mercury orbits our own sun, gaining it the moniker’ hot Earth.’

‘Hot Earth’ boasts a balmy ‘equilibrium temperature’ of 490 degrees Fahrenheit (254 degrees Celsius), meaning a ‘hard no’ for potential future human colonization as, even if it is found to have an atmosphere, it would be far too hot to sustain life. need to secure our national defense,” said freshman Sen. Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, on Wednesday. “I think it’s irresponsible and not for any clear purpose beyond the defense portion, which I support.” Sen. Cory Gardner, a Republican from Colorado up for reelection next year, said Wednesday he is concerned “it’s just a lot of money, and at some point, things become so free, we can’t afford it.” One GOP senator on the fence acknowledged that some of his colleagues would like to vote against it to publicly demonstrate they are fiscally prudent while privately hoping it passes so there can be orderly governing out of Washington. “There are a lot of people who will vote ‘no’ who hope to heck it passes,” said the senator, who did not want to be identified. The Undiscussed Medical Error

7 questions that could save your life While you may routinely hear about medical errors, it’s less common to hear about a misdiagnosis. Inaccurate or delayed medical diagnosis is a medical error many people rarely talk about. Yet research released by the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM) shows it remains the most common, costly and catastrophic of all medical errors. Researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine and CRICO Strategies found that 34% of malpractice cases resulting in death or permanent disability stem from an inaccurate or delayed diagnosis, making

it the No. 1 cause of serious harm among medical errors. This happens, in large part, because making and communicating a medical diagnosis is a complex and imperfect science. There are more than 10,000 known diseases and more than 5,000 laboratory tests, but only a limited number of symptoms to provide the clues necessary to make an accurate diagnosis. However, there is a new sense of momentum in the healthcare community to raise awareness and reduce inaccurate and delayed diagnoses, including more funding from the federal government. Even as researchers and experts continue to explore how best to address this costly, dangerous and sometimes deadly issue, it is important for patients to be aware of it. Everyone has a role to play in improving the

diagnostic process, including physicians, nurses, radiologists, laboratory scientists, health system leaders and, perhaps most especially, patients. It’s critically important that patients share information with their medical providers and know the right questions to ask in order to decrease the likelihood of misdiagnosis. To help patients have conversations with their physicians about their diagnoses, SIDM’s patient toolkit offers a questions checklist, including these seven questions to ask: 1. What is my diagnosis? What else could it be? 2. Why do you think this is my diagnosis? From test results? From my physical exam? 3. Can you give me written information about my diagnosis? A pamphlet? A website? 4. Can you explain the test or treatment you want me to have? 5. What are the risks to the test or treatment you

want me to have? What happens if I do nothing? 6. When do I need to follow up with you? 7. What should I do if my symptoms worsen or change, or if I don’t respond to treatment? In addition to these questions, always ask when test results will be ready. Get a copy for your records and call

your doctor’s office if you do not receive your test results. For more information and steps you can take to avoid misdiagnosis, download the Patient’s Toolkit for Diagnosis and share your personal story of inaccurate or delayed diagnosis at ImproveDiagnosis. org. Family Features

Together they helped found the MuszikMafia — a free community of likeminded, yet marginalized Music City artists. Within three years, a number of them had signed major label deals, including Gretchen Wilson, who emerged as a powerful new voice with hits like “Here for the Party,” co-written by Big & Rich, and “Redneck Woman,” a collaboration with Rich. Applause for CVRep’s Summer Cabaret Series By Pamela J. Price Images/Pat Krause Coachella Valley Repertory (CVRep) presented Kristin Towers-Rowles In A Lovely Lineage on July 28, at their new theatre in Cathedral City on July 28. The matinee performance put the spotlight on the granddaughter of Kathryn Grayson, remembered for her legendary singing voice in classic films such as Showboat, (1951), Anchors Aweigh ( 1945) and Kiss me Kate ( 1953). She brought a treasure chest of vintage songs to life. Many linked to her iconic mother to the softly lit stage accompanied by Wayne Abravanel, pianist, and musical director. By Desert Star Staff CATHEDRAL CITY, CA. –To improve public safety and reduce pedestrianinvolved accidents, the City of Cathedral City has installed two new Highintensity Activated crossWalK (HAWK) pedestrian traffic signals on Dinah Shore Drive at Via De Anza and at Linda Way. ‘Stockholm’--A Crime Caper Based on Fact Writer/director Robert Budreau’s bank heist film begins by informing us that the story we are about to see is “Based on an absurd but true story.” It’s also interesting to note that the phrase “Stockholm Syndrome” comes from the actual 1973 Stockholm bank robbery depicted on the screen where the hostages taken by the reallife Lars (Ethan Hawke) come to his defense after his capture. At the start, we watch as Lars dons a wig, dresses in casual clothes and places a rifle in a duffle bag. With his disguise in place, he jauntily heads toward the bank. Once inside, he starts shooting in the air to frighten the employees and customers who cower on the bank floor. So far, his strategy appears to be working. Eventually, he notifies the authorities, demanding one million dollars in cash and a getaway car. He also insists that they release his friend and former prison buddy Gunnar Sorenson (Mark Strong).

Chief Mattenson (Christopher Heyerdahl) arrives on the scene with Gunnar as requested, but the negotiations break down when Lars insists that they are allowed to leave in a getaway car with their hostages as protection from the police. The chief refuses, and the governor won’t negotiate with the two men either, telling them that this isn’t done in Sweden. At this point, both Lars and Gunnar realize that they need to kill one of the hostages to prove they mean what they say. But will they? The most interesting relationship in the film is between Lars and bank employee Bianca Lind (Noomi Rapace) even though it doesn’t get off to a good start in more ways than one. During all the confusion of the intended bank robbery, Bianca can secretly phone the authorities. When Lars discovers what she has done, she is sure he will kill her. To her surprise, he assures her she is safe at this point. Lars even

Bhakti Fest

allows her to call her husband so she can tell him what’s happened. When he comes to the bank to beg for Bianca’s release, it is clear that she is the strong one in their family. As the story unfolds, we see a new bond develop between Lars and Bianca as she realizes he is a decent man at heart. He is also an odd duck. For example, at one

point, he makes the hostages sing Bob Dylan music along with him to ease the tension. After a while, you can’t help liking him despite his criminal intent thanks to Ethan Hawke’s sensitive performance. The film would have been even more interesting if “Syndrome” had told us more about what eventually happened after Lars is

captured. It turns out that the actual hostages had bonded with the real Lars, refusing to testify against him when his case came to trial. Some even befriended him. “Stockholm,” rated R for language and brief violence is 92 minutes in length. It is now available on DVD and streaming.

Since Bringing A Spiritual Dimension to Woodstock 50 Years Ago, Founder Sridhar Brings Bhakti Fest to a New Home for 2019

By Desert Star Staff 29 Palms, California – 50 years ago this summer Woodstock promoters Michael Lang and Artie Kornfeld sought now Bhakti Fest producer Sridhar Silberfein’s advice on the soon to be legendary art and music festival they were producing upstate. Sridhar said to them, “Ya got some of the greatest musical acts in the world, but what’s missing is the spiritual component.” With their to-do lists already bursting, they answered, “Ok you deal with that part.” As can be seen in the documentary film about the event, Woodstock, on August 18, 1969, Sri asked singer/songwriter Richie Havens to introduce Swami Satchidananda. Still reeling from his legendary set, Richie gave him a “that would be a no” look. So, Sri escorted Swami Satchidananda and his entourage onto the Woodstock stage to deliver an invocation. More than half a million American youth were in attendance – the largest peaceful gathering in the West at the time. Swami Satchidananda introduced the power of mantra, inviting the crowd to recite “Hari Om” and “Ramaramarama.” A moment of silence followed. Not even a camera clicked. While still on stage, www.desertstarweekly.com

Sri whispered to Swami Satchidananda, “Swamiji, wouldn’t it be great to bring this many people together to chant the names of God?” Swami Satchidananda smiled knowingly and said, “Yes, it would be great if you could do that.” Finally, in 2009, 40 years after receiving his life’s mission, Sridhar founded Bhakti Fest, which has since become Southern California’s largest and most beloved yoga and spiritual music festival. Now after a decade in Joshua Tree, the festival is moving to a new home just up the road in 29 Palms, California. Taking place September 25 – 30 at Roadrunner Dunes in 29 Palms, Bhakti Fest 2019 will feature amazing conscious music, yoga, spiritual and wellness workshops and more, attracting spiritual seekers far and wide. New features include a lake for swimming, aquatic, and paddleboard yoga, and vast, vibrant space for art installations. Headliners for the event include Krishna Das, Mike Love, Dharma Mittra, Shiva Rea, Radhanath Swami, MC Yogi, Fannah Fi Allah, Saul David Raye, Sianna Sherman, Mas Vidal, Girish, Govind Das & Radha, Kia Miller, Dawn Cartwright, Ram Das (via video), and many,

many more to be announced in the coming weeks! The new location will feature three music stages, expanded yoga and workshop villages, a sound temple for sound baths, a healing sanctuary for bodywork, a mantra dome, Bhakti Kids Land with ongoing children’s programming, men’s and women’s sacred spaces, and a Kirtan school. The City of 29 Palms has rolled out the red carpet for Bhakti Fest, and the producers are thrilled to host the festivals here. 29 Palms, known as the “29”, has

become one of the hottest destinations for rock climbers, stargazers, nature lovers, Joshua Tree fanatics, and sunset seekers alike. It is the home of Joshua Tree National Park’s North Entrance, and the official Gateway to the Mojave Trails National Monument. Expect skies painted with color at dawn and dusk, night skies filled with an abundance of stars and the stunning Milky Way. Expanded housing options include camping, RV Hookup sites, on-site cabins, Glamping Yurts, Cozy Trailers, and many hotels and rental

has prepared a Draft Supplemental EIR (Draft SEIR) to evaluate the potential environmental impacts associated with the implementation of the Desert Hot Springs Wind Energy Repowering Project (Project). The Draft SEIR has been prepared to assess the potentially significant effects on the environment that could result from implementation of the Project. The Draft SEIR addresses the changes necessary to the previous WECS 20 FEIR so that the CEQA review for the Project adequately addresses the proposed Project modifications. It addresses the potential for new impacts not disclosed in the WECS 20 FEIR and increases in the severity of impacts disclosed in the WECS 20 FEIR as a result of the Project. The resource area topics analyzed in the Draft SEIR have been determined through preparation of a Section 15163 Study (Appendix A to the Draft SEIR) and the scoping process conducted by the City. As indicated in Draft SEIR, no new or more severe impacts would occur as a result of the of the Project with regard to all of the resource areas outlined in the WECS 20 FEIR. Implementation of the Project would not result in any impacts that cannot be mitigated to a less than significant level. Therefore, the Project would not result in significant and unavoidable environmental effects. This finding is consistent with that made in the WECS 20 FEIR, which determined that the previously proposed project would not result in significant and unavoidable environmental impacts Availability of Environmental Documents: A copy of the the Draft and Final Supplement to the Certified Final EIR and related documents are available for review at the Community Development Department at the City of Desert Hot Springs City Hall, 65950 Pierson Boulevard, Desert Hot Springs, California 92240 between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. INTERESTED PERSONS MAY appear at the public hearing or and be heard, or written comments may be submitted prior to the Public Hearing(s). Written comments will be made a part of the public record. The public comment period on the environmental documents began on Friday May 17th, 2019 and concluded on July 1st, 2019. If this matter should at some future date go to court, court testimony may be limited to only those issues raised at the public hearing described in this notice, or in written correspondence delivered to the City of Desert Hot Springs, at or prior to, the public hearing. First-of-Its-Kind Roadway Project Utilizes 81,000 Recycled Tires

CalRecycle Awards $158,000 to Help Stabilize Failing Road in Santa Barbara County By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO – With the help of a California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery grant, Santa Barbara County just completed a road stabilization project using 81,000 recycled tires. Tire-derived aggregate, made from 810 tons of California waste tires, was used to backfill a retaining wall composed of large, rockfilled welded wire baskets (called gabions) to replace failed soil and provide lateral support to the reconstructed embankment. This is the first infrastructure project in California to use TDA material in this type of application. “This CalRecycle grant project is a new model for how communities can transform recycled waste tires into a valuable resource to improve local infrastructure and protect public safety,” CalRecycle Director Scott Smithline said. “This has been a collective effort with the cooperation of Santa Barbara County to be part of this first-of-its-kind project. We hope this is the first of many statewide projects that will make use of this new civil engineering technique.” This roadway project in an unincorporated area of Santa Barbara County utilized 81,000 recycled waste tires. Fast Facts CalRecycle awarded Santa Barbara County $158,241 in Tire-Derived Aggregate Grant Program funds in March 2018 to purchase the TDA material. The University of California San Diego researched the road repair technique (dubbed by CalRecycle engineers as Mechanically Stabilized TDA), which provided the engineering data for the project design. Researchers determined that TDA is seismically safe for a retaining wall and road repairs, and it will not degrade due to poor underlying soils or saturated conditions. CalRecycle’s Engineering Services contractor, GHD Services, assisted with the design and construction oversight of the pilot project. The project consists of a 225-foot section of Ortega Ridge Road in Summerland (unincorporated Santa Barbara County) Tire-Derived Aggregate Grant Program CalRecycle’s TireDerived Aggregate Grant Program supports projects that use recycled waste tires in place of conventional construction material for civil engineering applications such as retaining wall backfill, landslide stabilization, vibration mitigation, and various landfill uses. The unique engineering properties of shredded waste tires allow for free-draining, lightweight, and typically

less expensive solutions for these types of projects. Since 2011, CalRecycle has awarded $5,582,126 in TDA grants to 28 projects statewide. Grants are funded through a portion of the $1.75 fee consumers pay on each new tire purchased in California.
