By Desert Star Staff The concerns of Americans after World War II gave rise to a new movie genre in Hollywood—science fiction thrillers that highlighted the dangers of the Atomic Age or, with extraterrestrials as a proxy, the prospect of an invasion by the country’s Cold War enemies. Sunnylands Center & Gardens, reopening for a new season Sept. 11, revives the
1950s genre with the return of its outdoor movie series, Films on the Great Lawn. Presented in partnership with the Palm Springs International Film Festival, the screenings on three consecutive Fridays in September are free to the public. Students can still register for full-term fall classes now through Sept. 3. There are many seats available in a wide variety of disciplines, including Administration of Justice, Automotive Technology, Art, Digital Design, Culinary Arts, Music and more. of the Desert website and click on the “Open Class List” link located on the left side of the homepage. The Fall 2019 Semester will end on December 16, 2019. Other key dates include:

All movies start at 7:30 p.m. Gates open at 7:00 p.m. Filmgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and small picnics. Large coolers, alcohol, smoking, and pets are not permitted. Gardens is located at 37977 Bob Hope Drive in Rancho Mirage. Beginning Sept. 11, it is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
