By Desert Star Staff The concerns of Americans after World War II gave rise to a new movie genre in Hollywood—science fiction thrillers that highlighted the dangers of the Atomic Age or, with extraterrestrials as a proxy, the prospect of an invasion by the country’s Cold War enemies. 1950s genre with the return of its outdoor movie series, Films on the Great Lawn. Volunteers Frustrated as Migrants are Trapped in Mexico
The Department of Homeland Security says a “remain in Mexico” policy has reduced overcrowded conditions for asylum seekers in the U.S. (DHS Inspector General/Wikipedia) By Desert Star Staff Volunteers who have been helping desperate migrants arriving in El Paso say they’re frustrated to see
those people now being forced to stay in Mexico. The Trump administration pressured the Mexican government to stop migrants
before they can ask for asylum in the U.S. Teva Gabis-Levine volunteered to coordinate for Annunciation House, a
temporary shelter in El Paso. He says there are as many as 15,000 people – mostly central Americans – now backed up in desperate conditions in Juarez. “There are people out in the plaza,” he states. “There are people in the basements of churches, in order to be some sort of deterrence.” The Trump administration defends the conditions asylum seekers face, saying they will discourage others from trying to come to the U.S. Gabis-Levine says Annunciation House went from sheltering as many as 1,000 new people a day last winter to seeing 100 or fewer per day. He says it was a stretch, but volunteers there could at least help people get on their feet and, within a few days, head out around the country to meet up with sponsors. He says he was impressed with how ordinary people stepped
up to make that happen. “Folks who brought shoes for people who were dropped off without shoes,” Gabis-Levine relates. “Making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and assembling bags that we would send folks on their journeys with.” Annunciation House was described as “the Ellis Island of the southwest border” in the Los Angeles Times newspaper. Gabis-Levine says in Mexico, the migrants are subject to far worse conditions and live under the threat of serious violence. He says it’s hard for him to watch. “After this occupying every waking moment of my life for six months, it’s emotionally very difficult to know that that’s happening a stone’s throw away and not really being able to do anything about it,” he says.
Poll: Public Wants Congress to Fund National Parks’ Repairs By Desert Star Staff Among registered voters, 82% say they want Congress to pass laws to fund a backlog of repairs for national parks and monuments, according to a new poll from The Pew Charitable Trusts. The Park Service needs almost $12 billion worth of deferred maintenance across more than 400 sites, according to Marcia Argust, project director for Pew’s Restore America’s Parks campaign. “And that covers things like trails that are eroding, historic structures that are deteriorated, monuments and memorials, but also roads that visitors use to access our parks,” she points out. Argust says the last time the parks saw significant investment was more than 50 years ago.
Maryland has 18 national parks, roads and historic sites run by the National Park Service. The state has a $292 million backlog of repairs needed to maintain these areas, according to former Maryland state Sen. John Astle. Astle says some of the parks in the state were built in the 1930s and have outdated wastewater and electrical systems. Roads and parking lots at some of the sites also need repaving, he says. “In some places, because of the deterioration, they have to restrict visitor access to various places in the parks, which makes the experience something less than the visitors would really like,” Astle adds. Maryland’s national parks
Maryland’s Chesapeake and Ohio Canal is one of 18 national park sites in the state that is in dire need of maintenance. (National Park Service) average about 6 million visitors a year, according to the Park Service. Tourists to
the sites pour about $271 million into the state annually. Support for this reporting

General Motors Feeling Pressure to Join CA Deal on Clean Car Standards
Soon after taking office, the Trump administration announced plans to weaken tailpipe emission and fuel-economy standards. (jppi/Morguefile)

By Desert Star Staff General Motors and other automakers are debating whether to join a deal to keep clean car standards high – an agreement between the state of California and VW, Ford, BMW and Honda. The deal would conform closely to current Obama-era targets and would block a rollback being proposed by the Trump administration. Jim Doyle, president of Business Forward, a trade group representing 6,000 Michigan companies, says the rollback would create uncertainty and ultimately cost auto industry jobs in Michigan. “It’s a bad idea, executed poorly,” he states. “For August 30, 2019
Trump it’s a PR stunt. For the industry, it’s years of litigation. “It’s going to have a bad impact on GM and Ford and Chrysler, and autoworkers in Michigan are going to pay a price.” The current federal standard calls for an average fuel economy of 54 miles per gallon by 2024, but Trump wants to freeze the standard at 2021 levels and undermine states’ ability to require standards higher than those set by the EPA. Automakers had pushed for the rollback, but many now are agreeing to keep the higher standards required by 14 states, which represent 110 million Americans – a big
chunk of the U.S. car market. Doyle warns that automakers that go along with Trump’s plan to gut clean car standards could be left behind. “Trying to fight 40 years of precedent is going to cause a lot of uncertainty, hurt short-term sales and, most important, this could hurt longterm investment and long-term profitability,” he stresses. CA Groups Push Bill to Curb “Pay-for-Delay” Prescription Deals
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Patients and health care advocates are rallying on the State Capitol steps Thursday in favor of Assembly Bill 824, which combats so-called pay-for-delay deals, in which pharmaceutical companies pay generic drug makers to keep their products off the market. The first-in-the nation bill has to pass the state Senate Appropriations Committee by Friday in order to get a full vote this session. Assemblymember Jim Wood of Santa Rosa, who authored the bill, says generics introduce competition and help drive prices down for consumers. “If you can keep people on

the brand name drug for longer, it costs your insurance company more money, your premiums are higher,” he points out. “It costs all of us more money, and that needs to change.” The bill would step up enforcement of laws against these types of deals, and place the burden of proof on the drug companies to prove they aren’t making payments for anti-competitive purposes. Pharmaceutical companies argue this law would open up the floodgates for expensive consumer lawsuits, which could drive prices up. The Federal Trade Commission says Americans pay at least $3.5 billion more a year for brand name drugs because generic companies take money to sit on their new products rather than release them. Wood says the drug companies’ claim that this bill would actually slow the arrival of generic drugs doesn’t hold water.
A decade ago, the Federal Trade Commission asked Congress to limit pay-for-delay deals among drug companies, but lawmakers have not done so. (Dodgerton Skillhause/Morguefile) “We hear from the drug companies that many of these agreements get the drugs to market sooner and they are not anti-competitive,” he

By Desert Star Staff Nashville based artist Peter Bradley Adams will bring his refined brand of soulful Americana out on the road this fall starting on the West Coast, before heading east and ending in Philadelphia. His music nestles his often delicate, heartfelt voice in the warm embrace of gentle guitar, subtle banjo, supportive bass, and unhurried percussion. His new single “Little Flower” is the beautifully produced follow up to his latest full-length offering A Face Like Mine that has now been streamed over 71 million times. Although well into his career, with this album, Adams finally found real confidence and a
sense of completeness in his songwriting. He further refined
the simple sophistication that has genuinely become his trademark. Noisey said, “....A Face Like Mine is perfect early-morning listening. It’s a somber reflection on a life lived without intent…” and Pop Dose raved that the album “...breathes comfort; the nature and overall texture to the songs; the delivery and production make you feel, indeed, warm – home – in a safe, content and thoughtful place.” Adams’ journey began in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, where his first exposure to music came from his grandfather, a former jazz musician. He went on to study music in college before moving to Los Angeles and eventually settling in Nashville. Having been a bit of a wanderer, moving from place to place on top of touring, he always comes back to the idea of searching for a home and a real sense of
purpose in his writing. Music fans gravitate to Adams for his thought-provoking and insightful lyrics. The intricacy and subtle complexities of his albums over the years have garnered Adams a profoundly devout and diverse fan base. His relaxed approach and level of comfort in the writing and recording resulted in a sonic scape that wraps itself around the listener like a soft blanket on a cold day. “...one of the 21stcentury writers whose songs are worth exploring.” –Wall Street Journal CA. By Desert Star Staff Palm Desert, Calif., (August 23, 2019) – Martha’s Village and Kitchen will use a $25,000 grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation to ensure that more impoverished and homeless people in our area have a path to stable, permanent housing.
The Coachella Valley Spotlight grant will support Martha’s Family Shelter Program that provides essential emergency housing, job training, and meals to about 100 families annually. “Martha’s has been an oasis of hope for the homeless and impoverished families and individuals since 1990 when
By Desert Star Staff Ontario, California – Southern California’s Ontario International Airport (ONT) will continue its rapid growth with Spring 2020 of Frontier Airlines nonstop service to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), airline and airport officials announced today. Frontier Airlines officials announced the first-time ONT-EWR route as one of 15 destinations that the air carrier will begin the new service in March/April 2020 with tickets going on sale at a later date. “Landing nonstop service to Newark has been a high priority since the OIAA gained local control of the airport on November 2016,” said Mark Thorpe, chief executive officer of the OIAA. “Our airport and Newark Liberty are similar in offering travelers a more predictable, less stressful, convenient option when they fly. Now, thanks to this additional new service by our partners at Frontier Airlines, we can connect passengers flying between America’s two largest markets with great customer experience at both ends of the journey.” Newark Liberty will be the 23rd destination in the U.S., Mexico, and Taiwan served by airlines operating at ONT and the fifth destination served by Frontier, which
today flies to Austin (AUS), Denver (DEN), Orlando (MCO), and San Antonio (SAT) international airport. “We are thrilled that lowfare Frontier Airlines has chosen Ontario to open its nonstop, cross-country service from Southern California to Newark Liberty International Airport,” said Alan D. Wapner, president of the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA) Commission, and Ontario City Council Member. “This will mark the first time in the airport’s 90year history that it has offered nonstop flights to Newark, and the first time that our airport has enjoyed options to the Garden State and the Big Apple.” The Frontier route will complement existing nonstop service between ONT and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) flown by JetBlue Airways. Jim Bowman, OIAA commissioner, and Ontario City Council member added, “Today’s announcement from Frontier Airlines is most welcomed. It is a further indication of the strong demand for air travel throughout Southern California, and I believe that our region’s travelers will respond very well to one more way to travel to the New York City and Northern New Jersey.”

‘The Curse of La Llorona’ Now on DVD If you missed the horror flick “The Curse of La Llorona” in theaters, fear not. It has now been reincarnated on DVD and Blu-ray. And like the compelling film “The Exorcist,” a priest will be needed to keep the main characters alive. In this case, it is a mother and her two children who are being stalked by a legendary undead force known as La Llorona. La Llorona lived in 17th century Mexico. Sadly, in a fit of rage, she drowned her two children to punish her unfaithful husband. Now her spirit roams the earth claiming or killing other unfortunate youngsters. As the story begins a widowed social worker Anna Tate Garcia (Linda Cardellini) is sent to check on Patricia Alverez (Patricia Velasquez) and her two young sons. When Anna arrives at the Alverez home, Patricia seems terrified, but reluctantly she lets Anna in. Once inside, Anna discovers two boys locked in a closet. Patricia pleads with her to let them stay hidden for just one more day so they will
be safe from a terrible force that is coming to kill them. Fearing child abuse, Anna has the boys taken to foster care for their protection, and Patricia is placed in psychiatric care for observation That night, the two boys are found mysteriously drowned in a nearby lake. When Patricia learns that her young sons are dead, she blames Anna and begs La Llorona to take Anna’s children (JayneeLynne Kinchen and Roman Christou), so Anna will suffer for what happened. Unfortunately, prayers are sometimes answered. Soon the weeping white-clad Spector (Marisol Ramirirez) arrives at Anna’s home. When very strange things start to occur, a fearful Anna desperately seeks help from Rafael Olvera (Raymond Cruz), a former priest who is an expert on strange occult occurrences. He tells her it is useless to run away because this spirit will follow her and her family until it gets what it wants. He gathers up special
powders and other items that should dispel the evil spirit for good. But will it? Prepare for some scary creepy things to happen so you can scream along with Anna and her kids. Let’s face it, La Llorona has had over three centuries to hone her unearthly, terrifying skills. The film was written
by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Laconis and marks the directorial debut of Michael Chaves. “The Curse of Llorona,” rated R for violence and terror, has a running time of 1 hour and 33 minutes and is now available on DVD. From Warner Bros. The DVD contains the
following special features: The Myth of La Llorona, Behind the Curse, The Making of a Movie Monster, Deleted Scenes, and Storyboards. On the lighter side “Pokemon Detective Pikachu,” starring Ryan Reynolds and JusticeSmith, is now on DVD and it is filled with many featurettes. Rated PG

3 Tips for Finding a Lost Dog
By Desert Star Staff Dogs are important and adored members of their families, however, millions go missing every year. The reasons are varied and probably not all that surprising. A curious dog might jump over a fence or dig a hole under one. A pup might sneak out a door or gate inadvertently left open. Worn or broken leashes or collars could also allow a dog to escape your control. Regardless of how a dog is lost, what matters most is getting your pup back home. Here are three important steps to take before and after a dog goes missing: 1. Before your dog ever goes missing, you can help protect your pup. Leverage innovative technology designed to reunite dogs with the people who love them, like the recently launched Wag! Tag, a smarter dog tag from the dog walking and sitting app Wag! Pet parents can use their smartphones to scan the unique code found on the tag to create a profile for their dog with important information, such as emergency and veterinary contacts, vaccination history, food and medicine allergies, and other relevant notes. If your dog ever goes missing, the person who finds your pup can scan the Wag! Tag with their smartphone to access the dog’s profile and contact you. The additional information on the profile can help that person contact someone else if you’re not available, as well as ensure your dog receives good care until you’re reunited. “Our love for dogs is what led us

to launch the Wag! Tag,” says Wag! CEO, Hilary Schneider. “A smarter dog tag will help a lost pup return home more quickly by allowing a pet parent to share a lot more information than is possible with a traditional dog tag.” Wag! is launching the tags by first providing them free to animal shelters and rescue organizations to help ensure that once rescue dogs find forever homes, they can be quickly reunited with their families if they ever go missing. The company has a long commitment to helping shelter dogs, donating a portion of its dog-walking proceeds to GreaterGood.org’s Rescue Bank. To-date, Wag! has provided more than 8 million meals to shelter dogs in the U.S. For more information, visit
tag.wagwalking.com/shelter. 2. Use social media to get out the word. Post to your own feed, asking friends and neighbors to share your post. Reach a wider audience by sharing your post on the pages of local community groups. 3. Of course, don’t neglect the traditional tactic of pounding the pavement, asking your neighbors if they’ve seen your pup, as well as posting fliers in highly-trafficked areas in your community. Be sure to include a recent high-resolution picture of your pet. And of course, keep your eyes open! You can imagine the heartbreak that a lost pup brings. Luckily, new technology as well as old-fashioned neighborly networking, can help ensure a happy reunion. StatePoint

Moving Tips to Make Unpacking Easy
By Desert Star Staff When it comes to moving, we usually focus on the process of getting organized and boxing up valuables. But we often forget about the debatably more stressful part of moving: unpacking. In fact, Americans take an average of 182 days -- more than six months! -- to finally unpack the last box after moving into a new home, according to Duck Brand research. To make settling into your new abode much easier, start by thinking about the process backwards and consider these tips: 1. Measure everything during the home inspection. Use your time on inspection day to collect all room and cabinet dimensions. This will help determine if furniture will fit, where items will go and how much storage is available. Pro tip: Precut shelf liner to instantly line drawers and cupboards on move-in day. 2. Pack based on where it will go, not where it was. Envisioning where items will go in your new space is key. Then, label each box with its contents, as well as the room where it should be unpacked. Not sure what moving supplies you’ll need? The free online moving calculator at DuckBrand. com is a great resource. Simply input your number of bedrooms and baths, and you’ll receive a printable/ sharable shopping list based on your specific needs. 3. Use plastic bags and tape to keep pieces together. For smooth assembly, use packaging tape and small plastic bags to attach screws, nuts and bolts to the bottom of dismantled furniture. This can prevent losing those small, essential pieces and perhaps even reduce the number of hardware store trips on move-in day. 4. Utilize tools that make opening boxes easy. Choosing a heavy-duty packing tape is critical to ensure boxes stay secure, but searching for a blade to open boxes while unpacking can be frustrating. Instead, try Duck brand Mover’s Edge, a unique heavy-duty packaging tape and refillable dispenser system that makes it easy to seal and unseal boxes -- no blade or boxcutter needed. As tape flows through the dispenser, the edges on each side of the tape are slightly folded. This allows for easy removal when you’re ready to unpack; just lift up the folded edge by hand and pull off the tape. 5. Avoid breaks and spills. Fifty-five percent of Americans have experienced an important item being damaged during a move, according to Duck Brand

research. To make sure your valuables arrive intact, use products that offer increased protection like Bubble Wrap cushioning and Foam Pouches. Pro tip: For additional safeguarding, use plastic grocery or storage bags to contain any items that could potentially spill. 6. Pack storage items in plastic bins rather than boxes. While cardboard boxes are an easy and cost-effective way to transport the majority of your belongings, plastic storage containers are more ideal for seasonal items that may not be unpacked, but instead stay in storage. Not only will the bins shield contents from the environment, like a damp basement or dusty attic, but their uniform size also will make it easy to create an organized and and how to choose the best efficient storage space. supplies for your relocation, For additional moving tips go to DuckBrand.com.
