Up-Close & Personal with Bryan Cranston his Personal & Professional Journey By Beverly Cohn Part 1: Genesis of “The Infiltrator” & Becoming a Character Bryan Cranston could easily be described as an actor’s actor. He is a master of the art of acting whether he is performing on television, film, or stage. For his riveting performance as Walter White in “Breaking Bad,” Cranston

won four consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He also received five Golden Globe nominations, with four wins, and six Satellite Award nominations, garnering four wins. His versatility as an actor earned him Broadway’s coveted Tony Award for his brilliant portrayal of Lyndon B. Johnson in “All The Way,”

the same role, which he reprised for the HBO television film. Other notable television roles include playing Hal, the dad in the sit-com “Malcolm in the Middle,” as well as appearances on “Seinfeld,” “The King of Queens,” “How I Met Your Mother,” as well as playing Buzz Aldrin in “From the Earth to the Moon.” His next big film was

By Desert Star Staff A hot air balloon carrying 16 people caught fire and crashed into a field near Lockhart in central Texas, in what is the second-deadliest ballooning accident in history. Police said that they answered a 911 call at 7.44 a.m. on Saturday, claiming that there was a road vehicle fire about 30 miles (48km) south of state capital Austin. “When the Emergency Responders and the Sheriff’s Office arrived it was apparent that the reported fire was the basket portion of a hot air balloon.” Officers then saw that the balloon “was occupied” and are now “determining the number and identities of the victims.” The Texas Department

of Public safety later confirmed that all those on board had perished. Texas Governor Greg Abbott expressed “deepest condolences” and promised an investigation into the “heartbreaking tragedy.” Both, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have sent experts to the scene. The hot air balloon may have come into contact with power lines, Reuters quoted eyewitnesses as saying. Caldwell County Judge Ken Schawe told CNN that the balloon could have collided with a power line, which could have triggered the fire and caused the crash. His theory is shared by a source from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The pilot of the balloon was later identified as Skip Nichols, a chief pilot with Heart of Texas Hot Air Balloon Rides. The company’s FB page has been since flooded with condolences. The worst-ever hot air balloon crash occurred in Luxor, Egypt in 2013. It resulted in the deaths of 19 of the 21 passengers on board, after the contraption caught fire when attempting to land. In 2012, a crash in Slovenia killed six people, when a balloon was blown towards the ground by a storm, and in New Zealand, 11 people died, after a tourist balloon became tangled in a power line. In both cases, the gas-powered aerostats were engulfed in rapidly-spreading flames.

“Trumbo” in which he played the blacklisted film writer, Dalton Trumbo and for his performance, he received an Academy Award for Best Actor. He also had roles in many other films such as “Saving Private Ryan,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Love Ranch,” and “Argo.” He worked with director Brad Furman in “The Lincoln Lawyer,” which brings us to

their collaboration on Furman’s latest film, “The Infiltrator.” The screenplay, based on Robert Mazur’s book, was written by the director’s mother, Ellen Brown Furman, and is a true story about the undercover work of federal agent Robert “Bob” Mazur. Fans were not disappointed as they came on stage with flashing lights and a lot of members of the band. This group is exceptionally large in comparison to other groups that perform. The singers and musicians were all over the stage. Each band member took his turn at the front of the

stage. There was not a boring moment during their whole performance. Fans stood up and cheered as they came on stage. Many fans stood for a lot of the songs waving their arms to the music. Some fans would slap their knee to the songs or had a hard time keeping their feet still. It was a very rousing performance, and their songs were amazing. They utilize the whole stage with their dancing and movements while playing and singing. Earth Wind and Fire have been around since the 70s and was founded by Maurice White who passed away this Feb.. They have garnered six Emmys and four American Music Awards plus many Platinum records. They play

all kinds of music, which included R&B, Soul. Gospel Blues, Jazz and a whole lot of toe-tapping dance music. They have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame plus many other awards. They have a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and even a Star in Germany. Fantasy Springs provides great musical events all year. A study by Global Impact Investing found that this year, investors planned to increase capital committed to investments that would produce the greatest impact on society and environment. It also revealed that nearly three-quarters of wealthy individuals made financial contributions to nonprofits and causes, and considered philanthropic giving, the best way they could make the largest impact. Almost 61% actively volunteered their time, skills and services to nonprofit organizations, and 16% worked for a nonprofit group. toward associations has long been that they should be treated as public governments. The Brown Act bans discussion outside meetings of public entities, but HOAs, as private ownership corporations, are not subject to the Brown Act. Consequently, the legislature a few years ago supplemented the Open Meeting Act by cracking down on discussions of HOA topics outside of board meetings. The combination of Civil Code Sections 4910(b) and 4930(a) close the loophole of electronic discussions. However, not all emails between directors are banned. Messages conveying information or questions are permissible. The problem arises when a director responds to the information and begins discussing it. At that point, deliberation has commenced, instead of being reserved for the board meeting. Routine matters such as newsletter drafting or ordinary repairs can be handled by delegating authority to a

committee, a director, or the manager. Decisions about seeking bids should be handled in the board meeting. Many (including me) think the Open Meeting Act may have gone too far. However, in fairness, the law’s laudable intent is to move board discussions and decisions into board meetings. Association members deserve to hear board deliberations, except for closed session items. Thanks for your questions, Kelly. [Read California laws at www.leginfo.legislature.ca.gov]

3 Reasons Military Veterans Make Topnotch Employees

By Desert Star Staff Politicians call them heroes and strangers thank them for their service. But when their enlistment comes to an end, veterans need more than a pat on the back as they return to civilian life. They need jobs. And increasingly, they seem to be getting them because the unemployment rate among veterans has been on the decline in recent years. In May, the veteran unemployment rate was 3.4 percent, down from 5 percent for the same month in 2015, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That compares to a 4.7 percent overall unemployment rate. “I think in the last several years there has been a focus on the importance of hiring veterans and many businesses have taken that to heart,” says Nick Baucom, a U.S. Marine veteran who makes hiring veterans a priority for his company, Two Marines Moving

(www.TwoMarinesMoving.com). “But probably the biggest reason that the unemployment rate for veterans has trended downward is that, as a group, veterans bring with them experience and attitudes that make them great employees.” Baucom’s moving company employs more than 100 veterans between its two locations – the Washington, D.C., area and Miami. He’s wants to hire more because his company is booked three to four weeks in advance and he could use the extra help. “But with the unemployment rate for veterans dropping, it’s becoming more challenging to hire them,” says Baucom, who also is author of “On the Move: A Marine’s Guide to Entrepreneurial Success.” “I can’t complain too much, though, because I’m glad so many other employers are seeing the benefits of having veterans in their workforce.”

Baucom says there are several reasons veterans make topnotch employees, including: • Their tenacity. Veterans know what perseverance is all about, if for no other reason than they survived boot camp, an arduous challenge that puts a person’s fortitude to to the test. Marines, for example, must prove they can hike 20 miles carrying a fully loaded pack. • Their decisiveness. People in the military don’t always have the luxury of taking all day to analyze a situation before making a decision. Yes, they must gather data and understand it thoroughly – but they understand the need to do it expediently. “A 90 percent solution now is better than a 100 percent solution later,” Baucom says. “Both in the Marines and in the business world, I’ve found that waiting for that 100 percent solution just leads to paralysis.” • Their initiative. Anyone in the military learns to

follow orders. But they also understand that there are situations when they need to take action in the absence of orders. If something needs to be done, they don’t have to wait to be told.

“I know that Marines go through quite an ordeal in their training and in carrying out their missions,” Baucom says. “When we ask them to move a piano, it probably doesn’t seem all that difficult in comparison.”

to the law says guns can be banned from campus buildings if signs stating that guns are prohibited are posted at every entrance. That’s what Wisconsin institutions of higher learning did to keep guns out. Now, with terror attacks and other violence making headlines, some are calling for students to be armed. Marc Lovicott, a spokesman for the UWMadison Police Department, says it’s a very bad idea. “We’ve heard from student groups, we’ve heard from faculty groups, we’ve heard from parents, we’ve heard from alumni who say they don’t want this to happen here,” he states. “They feel as if the campuses, and other campuses across the state, would be less safe.

“And they would be less safe. And we agree with them, and we don’t believe more guns are the answer.” After the law was passed in 2011, three Democratic members of the State Assembly, Terese Berceau Melissa Sargent and Chris Taylor, introduced a bill that would make carrying weapons on campus a Class One felony, but the idea never advanced in the Republicancontrolled Legislature. Taylor said at that time that “if guns reduced crime, the U.S. would have the lowest homicide rate in the industrialized world.” Taylor and others still feel people want more measures promoting gun safety. Lovicott says campus police feel the same way. “We feel our colleges

don’t need more guns,” he stresses. “We feel like they don’t belong in classrooms, our student centers, locker rooms, laboratories. “We just feel that there’s no evidence that exists indicating that college campuses would be safer because of concealed carry laws and more guns.” Supporters of students carrying guns often argue that a good guy with a gun could stop a bad guy with a gun. Lovicott disagrees, saying in such a situation where there’s an active shooter, police don’t have time to figure out who’s the bad guy and who’s the good guy, and it just complicates the situation.

Sand Storm Causes Unhealthy Air Conditions

By Carlos Herrera, Video Journalist COACHELLA VALLEY - Monsoon season has moved into the Coachella Valley with a vengeance. Gone are the views of our gorgeous desert mountains. The Coachella Valley sky shows a thick haze thanks to that combination of humidity and sand. Last night’s sand storm swept across the desert.” It was just incredible,

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California has almost 400,000 miles of roads and a ton of truck traffic that together may soon become a source of renewable energy. When a truck rumbles down the road, it sends out powerful vibrations, and the state is set to test something called piezoelectric technology, that can convert that pressure into electricity. The California Energy Commission has been studying this idea for five years now, and just announced it is spending $7 million on a pilot project on Golden State roads. Assemblyman Mike Gatto, a booster of the idea, says tiny sensors are embedded in the pavement that work like sonar, but in reverse.

“You shoot an electrical pulse into sonar, it can generate waves,” he explains. “This is really the opposite. The cars and trucks drive over a road, there’s a certain amount of vibration within the pavement. These little watch batteries, they get a charge from those vibrations and they generate electric power.” Gatto explains the sensors have small wires that connect to a battery on the side of the road that then can generate power for streetlights, or even a nearby factory. Gatto sponsored a bill a few years ago to fund a piezoelectric project, but Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed it, saying it needed to go to the California Energy Commission first. “They’ve concluded that this is a tremendous source of

The image shows the thick layer of sand floating in the air, almost completely covering the windmills, which are usually visible on a clear day. “You can taste it, you can see it, everything has a real heavy layer of silt on it,” Dileva said. It even prompted the South Coast Air Quality Management District to issue

an advisory about unhealthy air quality conditions for the Coachella Valley. Meaning, stay indoors and keep away from the murky air. “My wife has been coughing most of the morning and she normally does not do that,” Cotler said. That layer of dust and sand hanging in the air was a challenge for drivers this morning. “Driving those roads is difficult enough and with

this on top, it makes it even more critical to slow down on the road,” Dileva said. The air will clear eventually, but for most, it will not be soon enough. “We have had dust storms that have affected the interstate, but not something that’s in the air that you can’t see out beautiful mountains,” Cotler said. There have been several media reports of Pokemon-related accidents, including some later revealed as hoaxes, but Cole said so far, no incidents have been reported in Colorado, and the C-DOT campaign aims to keep it that way. A national survey by the Center for Internet and Technology Addiction found while 98 percent of respondents know distracted driving is dangerous, nearly 75

percent admit to having done it. Cole said from law enforcement reports, distracted drivers sound a lot like drunk drivers. “The car is weaving along the roadway, speeds are erratic,” he said. “And also, somebody’s reaction time can be delayed, obviously, if they’re distracted. When you’re driving a vehicle, two-ton vehicle down the road, you have an enormous responsibility.” Cole said kicking a distracted-driving habit could save a life. C-DOT is challenging Coloradans to lock their phones away, starting with their next trip, and make it to their destination without touching it once.

Parents: How to Encourage Discovery and Fun at Home By Desert Star Staff As kids are getting into “back-to-school” mode, it’s a great time to get little ones ready for the year ahead. And while they’re busy learning their ABCs and 123s in the classroom, it’s important to keep them exploring, discovering and engaged at home as well. Creative Spaces: Children are naturally creative if given the time and space to design. Inspire kids to express themselves freely and creatively by dedicating spaces in your home to open-ended play. Parents can encourage discovery and fun by placing books, musical instruments and arts and crafts supplies at children’s eye level, while the availability of dress-up clothes and role-play items can inspire imaginative play. Interactive Toys: Interactive toys are another great way for kids to explore and discover at home. For example, the new Touch & Learn Activity Desk Deluxe from VTech

is a three-in-one desk that comes with interactive activity cards that let kids hone their reading and math skills, as well as learn nursery rhymes, shapes and animals through engaging content. Designed for children between two and five years old, the desk features grow-withme content that is expandable for extended play value. It transforms from a desk into both an easel and chalkboard and includes plenty of space for art supplies to encourage natural play and discovery. For more information, visit vtechkids.com/activitydesk. “Research shows that early interactions with language, letters, vocabulary and reading are the basic building blocks of literacy and language development,” says Dr. Deborah Libby, early childhood language and reading expert and VTech Expert Panel member. “The Touch & Learn Activity Desk Deluxe offers a variety of engaging content that introduces

important developmental concepts at an early age.” Play Time: While social skills will be enhanced in preschool and other outof-the-house settings, you can continue this important development at home. Set up regular playdates with other children. Spend time with

young children conversing, reading and playing. Make sure games include physical activity and time spent outdoors. Encourage kids to explore plants, flowers and local wildlife in your own backyard. The benefits of both exercise and connection with the natural world are extensive.

Parents can foster future success in school and beyond by taking a few important steps at home. Early childhood opportunities for growth, development and discovery are crucial. With a little thought and planning, they can also be fun. StatePoint

Keeping American businesses strong: The most recent trade deal signed by the U.S. and 11 other countries called the TransPacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement would eliminate more than 18,000 taxes and other trade barriers that various countries put on U.S. goods and services, according to the United States Trade Representative. Without these taxes holding them back, many experts believe that U.S. farmers, ranchers and manufacturers are better able to compete. 5. 5 Ways International Trade Affects Your Household

By Desert Star Staff From the price of household goods to the quantity and quality of jobs available, international trade impacts your daily life in more ways than you may realize. Supporters of new trade agreements say they include important and unexpected measures that do everything from preserving the environment to supporting

high tech innovation. Take a look at five ways the global marketplace affects you and your family. 1. Jobs: U.S. businesses your family relies on for everyday household items often sell their products to customers abroad as well. This global market means expanded operations here at home -- U.S. exports supported 11.7 million

American jobs in 2014, according to the Department of Commerce. New trade agreements will lead to more American made exports and U.S. higher-paying jobs. 2. High-tech advancement: International trade raises the incentive to innovate. It gives exporters and importers exposure to new ideas, tools and materials that make them

more productive and lead to new goods for consumers. It also spreads new technology faster, raising technology standards in countries all around the world. When seen from the air, the eruption appears to be in the shape of a smiley face. Videographer Mick Kalber of Tropical Visions Video captured the emojilike display via helicopter ride over the Pu’u O’o Crater. Kilauea has been

continuously erupting since 1983, with lava from the Pu’u O’o vent oozing towards the ocean since May. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Its name means “spewing” or “much spreading.” Last week, lava from Kilauea reached the Pacific Ocean for the first time since 2013, creating a spectacular view of the molten lava flowing

like a waterfall over a steep cliff and into the water at the Kamokuna Ocean entry. Kilauea, located on the southern shore of the island of Hawaii (nicknamed the ‘Big Island’), is a shield volcano that is between 300,000 and 600,000 years old. It emerged above sea level about 100,000 years ago. The volcano has a large summit caldera, called Halemaumau. According to Hawaiian legends, the

caldera is the home of Pele, the goddess of fire, lightning wind and volcanoes and who created the Hawaiian Islands. The eruption poses no threat to local communities, the USGS said in its most recent Kilauea status report. However, the government agency cautions that “there are additional significant hazards” to visitors viewing the new ocean entry, including “flying debris created by the explosive

Court Ruling Could Affect Turnout, Outcome of NC Elections By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. — A federal court struck down North Carolina’s voter ID law and other changes put into place by lawmakers in 2013. The decision means voters will not be required to provide photo ID at the polls this November. Mary Klenz, co-president with the League of Women Voters of North Carolina, said Friday’s ruling left little room for interpretation regarding the law’s constitutionality. “They give us a clear message that politicians have no business standing in the way of our right to vote,” Klenz said. “We’re grateful to the court of appeals for seeing this bill for what it was.” The decision also restored voters’ ability to register on Election Day and pre-register before their 18th birthday. Also restored were the original seven-day early voting period and allowances for out-ofprecinct voting. According to Klenz, the resulting votes

CANCER It’s important to ponder deeply upon essential decisions you need to make. You must have all the facts, be practical, while proceeding slowly. There’s value in taking your time, contemplating different choices. This allows for deliberation on final decisions. Determination colors your actions. You’re developing a greater level of concentration. Concentration is the first level of meditation (the Leo level).

25 Years Ago: Deadly Bus Crash in Palm Springs

By Angela Monroe, Anchor / Reporter It was 25 years ago, July 31st, 1991, that a school bus filled with girl scouts from across the country veered off Tramway road and crashed into the desert. Sonny Bono was the mayor of Palm Springs at the time. He was one of the first people on the scene. Agencies from across Riverside County rushed to help, and victims were taken to all three-valley hospitals. The crash left seven dead, and 47 injured. Here’s a look at the story 25 years ago as told by KMIR news reporter Jay Gormley: It was one of the worst accidents in the history of Palm Springs. Several girl scouts were killed when the school bus they were traveling in overturned. “I can recall other accidents involving buses, but nothing of this magnitude, this is the worst I’ve ever seen.” “It is also hard to see the other kids who have friends that have been killed.

It’s a collective and a true collaboration when everybody charged with the story telling process is involved. That extends to the crew as well who could make a suggestion that helps tell the story. So you encourage and embrace everyone and that’s how it really comes together. PR Person enters at this point to end the session. I moaned “I had one more question” and gracious Bryan looked at me and said what’s your question? So many Hollywood marriages collapse. What is your secret recipe for balancing home and career? Cranston: I think that’s it. It’s balance. It’s not allowing yourself to get unbalanced for too long. However, it’s never balance in the sense that every day is completely balanced. It’s finding the right combination over the course of time. The other thing is marrying the right person. Thank you so much for a really fun interview. Cranston: It’s been a pleasure. Watch for Part 2 of my interview with Bryan Cranston in which he talks about his childhood and his path to stardom. www.desertstarweekly.com

MUSIC Multifaceted releases for the modern age BY ROBERT KINSLER

A multifaceted view of the modern-day rock landscape is revealed via a crop of excellent summer 2016 releases, including the latest titles from Paul Kelly and Don DiLego, as well as the debut from the Shelters and a live collection from 10,000 Maniacs.

Artist: Paul Kelly Title: Seven Sonnets & A Song (Cooking Vinyl) You might like if you enjoy: Leonard Cohen, Neil Finn Tell me more: One of the world’s most interesting and talented songwriters. Australiabased Paul Kelly has surprised yet again with his newlyreleased “Seven Sonnets & A Song,” an ambitious collection anchored by original songs created using six Shakespeare sonnets. The Clown’s Song (“O Mistress Mine”) from the Bard of Avon’s “Twelfth Night” as well as a lyrical work penned

by Shakespeare contemporary Sir Philip Sidney titled “My True Love Hath My Heart” (the latter featuring soprano Vika Bull on lead vocals) round out the wonderful collection. The splendid verse is adorned with Kelly’s lush soundscapes which range from jazz (“Sonnet 138) and folk (“Sonnet 73,” “O Mistress Mine”) to Americana (“Sonnet 18”) and piano-anchored ballads (“Sonnets 44 & 45”). Information: paulkelly.com.au.

Artist: The Shelters Title: The Shelters (Warner Bros. Records) You might like if you enjoy: Tom Petty, Mudcrutch, Tommy Keene Tell me more: It has become cool for rock ‘n’ roll to be fun again. Just listen to the great self-titled debut album from Los Angeles rockers the Shelters. Like Ireland’s Strypes,

the Shelters have dipped back into the past to conjure up rock that thrives on cool hooks and great riffs. What sets apart the Shelters is the quartet (singer-guitarist Chase Simpson, singer-guitarist Josh Jove, drummer Sebastian Harris and bassist Jacob Pillot) also incorporates Laurel Canyon harmonies (just listen to “Liar” and the shimmering psychedelic rocker “Gold”) and folk-rock touches (as evidenced by “Nothin’ in the World Can Stop Me Worryin’ ‘Bout That Girl”) into its sonic brew. “Rebel Heart,” “Surely Burn” and XXXX are among the rockers who burst out of the gate and impress with the power of their rocking ancestors. Information: thesheltersmusic.com. Artist: Don DiLego Title: Magnificent Ram A (One Little Indian/Velvet Elk) You might like if you enjoy:

The Decemberists, Dandy Warhols, the Shins Tell me more: Don DiLego’s “Magnificent Ram A” is eclectic, beautiful and never less than involving for lovers of smart contemporary rock. “Karma King” explodes with a symphonic approach. The beautiful “A Wishful Poem” is just lovely, but rooted in the baroque folk rock that has yielded stunning efforts from Portland’s Shins and Decemberists. Other songs are bolstered by the same buoyant approach, but are rooted in other sounds. The sing-along “Drive Like Pirates,” rootsy acoustic ballad “Go Pack Your Suitcase” and anthemic Americana opus “Russin in Place with a Desperate Heart” are other strong tracks. Information: dondilego.com. Artist: 10,000 Maniacs Title: Playing Favorites

(Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: 10,000 Maniacs, the Corrs Tell me more: Recorded live on Sept. 13, 2014 in its hometown of Jamestown, New York, 10,000 Maniacs’ “Playing Favorites” finds the enduring ensemble playing a mix of original favorites and artful covers. The 14-song disc allows plenty of time for the six-member troupe (joined by five guest players) to showcase its style blending alternative and college rock with folk rock. Standouts include spirited takes on band hits (“What’s The Matter Here,” “Like the Weather,” “Trouble Me”) and a joyful take on Bryan Ferry’s Roxy Music hit “More Than This” and fiddle-anchored version of the Patti Smith/Bruce Springsteen rocker “Because the Night.” Information: omnivorerecordings.com.

Historic Animal Sanctuary Hosts Rescue Event By Pam Price Living Free Animal Sanctuary, established in 1980 thanks to founder Emily Jo Beard, rambles over 160 acres in Mountain Center tucked away in the San Jacinto Mountains near Idyllwild, CA . This is one of the first privately funded animal’s sanctuaries in America, and remains a haven for abandoned, abused or neglected dogs and cats. More than 300 dogs and cats were rescued in 2015 alone. It is now home for one wild mustang and three burros, reports Randall Harris, President and Executive Director saying, “Their being here prevents them from being returned to the Bureau of Land Management where they would be at great risk for slaughter.” Today, Living Free flourishes in a peaceful historic setting was once a movie set during the era of silent movies, and later the site of The Tahquitz Lodge. During the 1920s films, featuring Mary Pickford,

Roy Rogers, John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn was produced here. Today, an original stone fireplace remains as a reminder of this era. The acreage is now a haven for rescued dogs and cats who are protected from with outdoor play areas, clever kennels-in-the-round opening to large play ranges and “most of all fresh air and sunshine.” The goal says the staff is to find every animal a “safe and loving home.” The day I visited two darling Maltese puppies captivated me, playing at the Puppy Palace, having been rescued from “imminent shelter euthanasia.” I was told that when a Living Free staff member arrived at the aforementioned shelter just in time to save the pup’s mother, who was about to deliver four pups. The mother whelped the puppy quartet in the rescue vehicle! Two pups were quickly adopted, and the remaining duet found a temporary home at the Living Free’s spotless “Puppy

Mr. Harris told me a woman just having lost her pet a few days prior adopted the two pups within days. “Consider visiting Living Free on Sept. 24, Saturday for their August 3, 2016

Trump warns US presidential election will be ‘rigged’

By Desert Star Staff Donald Trump says November’s US presidential election “is going to be rigged,” making the claim twice on Monday. The property tycoon also called his rival Hillary Clinton “the Devil,” adding that the system was also rigged against Bernie Sanders. The Republican presidential candidate first spoke at a town hall event in Columbus, Ohio, where he said that election on November 8 might be “rigged.” “I’m afraid the election is going to be rigged, I have to be honest,” the Republican nominee told the crowd, as cited by AP. He added that he has been hearing “more and more” that the election may not be contested fairly, though he did not give any further details. He reiterated his claims using even stronger language

during an interview with Fox News on Monday evening, in which he told Sean Hannity “the election is going to be rigged,” while also calling on Republicans to watch proceedings “very closely.” “I hope the Republicans get out there and watch very closely, because I think we are going to win this election… I tell you November 8, we better be careful because that election is going to be rigged and I hope the Republicans are watching closely because it is going to be taken away from us,” he said. Trump took a swipe against certain members of the Republican establishment, saying that despite the primary campaign against him being slightly rigged, he still managed to win “in landslides.” He also claimed that Sanders, who was defeated by Clinton in

By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON, -U.S. News & World Report today released its 27th annual Best Hospitals rankings to help patients make more informed health care decisions. U.S. News compared nearly 5,000 medical centers nationwide in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. This year the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, is No. 1 on the Honor Roll, which has been expanded to highlight 20 hospitals delivering exceptional treatment across multiple areas of care. The Cleveland Clinic is No. 2, followed by Massachusetts General Hospital at No. 3. U.S. News also recognized 504 Best Regional Hospitals in states and metro areas. In the specialty rankings,

University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is No. 1 in cancer; the Cleveland Clinic is No. 1 in cardiology & heart surgery and the Hospital for Special Surgery is No. 1 in orthopedics. A total of 153 hospitals were nationally ranked in at least one specialty.

the Democratic race, also faced an unfair battle as the establishment was against him. “I think it was rigged against Bernie Sanders with his superdelegates nonsense,” Trump said. This is not the first time that Trump has accused the system of being rigged against Sanders. “Leaked e-mails of DNC show plans to destroy Bernie Sanders. Mock his heritage and much more. On-line from Wikileakes [sic], really vicious. RIGGED,” the Republican nominee tweeted on July 23. During his speech in Ohio, Trump said Sanders had “made a deal with the Devil” in reference to Clinton, adding that “she is the Devil” after the Vermont senator, agreed to back the Democrat nominee.

Families are Tapping More Scholarships and Grants to Pay for College By Desert Star Staff Families spent less out-of-pocket for college in academic year 2015-16 compared to last year, as they took advantage of more scholarships and grants to foot the bill, according to “How America Pays for College 2016,” the national study from Sallie Mae, the country’s largest private student lender, and Ipsos, a global independent market research company. Scholarships and grants covered 34 percent of college costs, according to the report, the largest percentage of any resource over the last five years. Approximately, half of families used a scholarship or grant to help pay for college. “Families wrote smaller checks for college this year as they looked less to their wallets and more toward free money to make college happen,” says Raymond Quinlan, chairman and chief executive officer, Sallie Mae, a company focused on helping families save, plan and pay for college. “Scholarships and grants have become an increasingly important part of the pay-for-college mix, and it’s encouraging to see organizations, schools, and the government stepping up to provide them.” • Bachelor’s: the new norm: Families are firmly in agreement on the value of college: 98 percent believe it’s an investment in their student’s future and 90 percent expect their student

to earn a bachelor’s degree. What’s more, 54 percent of families expect their student to earn a graduate degree. Families are putting their money where their mouth is -- the vast majority are willing to stretch financially to make college happen. • Making college more affordable: Nearly all families took at least one cost-saving measure, while most took five or more. These measures include cutting personal spending, working while in school, living at home, and taking accelerated coursework to graduate faster. Additionally, four in five students attended college in their home state, and one in three started at community college. Eighty-five percent of families completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). • Borrowing not a forgone conclusion: Fewer than half of families borrowed last year. In fact, the proportions of funding from family savings and income and scholarships and grants were twice as high as the proportion of funds borrowed. Student borrowing paid 13 percent of all college costs, down from 16 percent last year. • Cost important, but not top factor: Sixty-seven percent of families narrow college choices based on cost, but when it comes to making the final decision, this takes a back seat. Primary reasons in choosing a college are split evenly

between academic program and personal choice, which includes campus culture, extracurricular activities and student population. Cost ranked third at 27 percent. • Planning still pays off: Only 40 percent of families have a plan to pay for college — but in families with plans, students are more likely to pursue bachelor’s degrees, there is more willingness and ability to spend on college,

and students borrow 40 percent less than those from families without plans. For the complete report, visit SallieMae.com/ HowAmericaPaysForCollege. Join the conversation using #HowAmericaPays. To learn more about planning for college, visit Salliemae. com/PlanforCollege. “The results of this important annual study shed light on critical financial

decisions families are making for and with their collegebound students,” said Julia Clark, senior vice president at Ipsos Public Affairs. “The changing roles that college cost, borrowing, and savings play in this process are essential to understand as key factors in the broader higher education landscape.” StatePoint

How Will Idaho’s Bernie Sanders Supporters Change Course?

By Desert Star Staff COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – Idaho supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders now face some big choices – whom to support in November and what to do with the powerful grassroots organization behind his primary campaign. Many say they’re now taking another look at the third-party candidates. A.J. Konda, a Sanders delegate from Kootenai County, says he’ll vote for Independent Party candidate Gary Johnson or Green Party candidate Jill Stein if it looks like one of them could win. But if they remain low in the polls, Konda says he is prepared to support Clinton. “We hate the lesserof-two-evils kind of vote, but even I think that we do need to vote for Hillary if all else fails in order to not get Trump,” he concedes.

Many of Sanders’ supporters have said they’re frustrated by the email controversy that showed some Democratic National Committee staffers had discussed ways to discredit the senator from Vermont. The party has now formed a unity commission to reduce the number of superdelegates, who this year overwhelmingly supported Clinton. Konda also wants to see the states do away with closed primaries, which he calls undemocratic. Not coincidentally, Sanders did well in caucus states and Clinton did well in states with closed primaries, where a voter had to be registered as a Democrat to take part. “You couldn’t have voted in New York unless you were a registered Democrat,” Konda points out. “And the

Many supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders say they’ll refocus their attention on other political races in Congress and state legislatures. (Laura Musikanski/morguefile) deadline to be registered as a Democrat was in October of 2015, when relatively no one was paying attention. And that suppressed 3

million independent voters, in New York alone.” Konda maintains Sanders’ millions of supporters should now turn their attention down

ballot, and work to elect progressive-minded Senators, members of Congress and state and local legislators.

Republicans blast Trump comments about family of slain Muslim soldier

By Desert Star Staff Republican leaders have denounced remarks made by their presidential nominee, Donald Trump, about the parents of a decorated Muslim-American solider who died in Iraq. Several top Republicans have said they are “appalled” by Trump’s “unacceptable” comments about the parents of a slain American soldier who questioned whether Trump had ever read the US Constitution. “This is going to a place where we’ve never gone before, to push back against the families of the fallen,” US Senator Lindsey Graham told ABC News. “There used to be some things that were sacred in American politics — that you don’t do — like criticizing the parents of a fallen soldier even if they criticize you.” Khizr and Ghazala Khan, parents of Army captain Humayun Kahn, who died serving in Iraq in 2004, spoke at the Democratic National Convention last week. The speech made by Khizr was both paying homage to

14

their son and a criticism of Trump’s stated plans to bar non-American Muslims from entering the United States. During the speech, Khizr Khan said Trump has sacrificed “nothing” and “no one,” and that the billionaire real estate mogul did not understand that people of many backgrounds had given their life in service of their nation. “Have you ever been to Arlington Cemetery?” Khan asked. “You will see all faiths, genders, and ethnicities. You have sacrificed nothing. And no one.” Trump responded by suggesting Ghazala Khan was unable to speak due to her Muslim faith. “If you look at his wife, she was standing there,” he told ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos. “She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say. You tell me, but plenty of people have written that.” Ghazala Khan later told MSNBC that she did not speak because of the

powerful emotion that the photo of her son, which was in the hall, evoked. “I was very nervous, because I cannot see my son’s picture and I cannot even come in the room where his pictures are, and that’s why when I saw the picture on my back, I couldn’t take it,” she said. “And I controlled myself at that time, so it is very hard.” Trump also told NBC News that he has “made a lot of sacrifices.” “I work very, very hard. I’ve created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs.” When asked by Stephanopoulos what he would say to the Khizr Khan, Trump said, “I’d say, we have a lot of issues with radical Islamic terrorism, that’s what I’d say.” Since those comments, Trump has continued to insist his remarks following Khizr Khan’s speech are focused on “radical Islamic terror” and not about their son, “a hero,” Trump has tweeted. Trump and running mate Mike Pence released a August 3, 2016

statement Sunday saying the campaign believes “that Capt. Humayun Khan is an American hero and his family, like all Gold Star families, should be cherished by every American.” On Sunday, Trump also tweeted that he was the one who was first attacked. “I was viciously attacked by Mr. Khan at the Democratic Convention. Am I not allowed to respond? Hillary voted for the Iraq war, not me!” Meanwhile, Republican leaders have scrambled to disavow Trump’s sentiments while praising Humayun Khan. “As I have said on numerous occasions, a religious test for entering our country is not reflective of these fundamental values,” House Speaker Paul Ryan said. “I reject it. … Many Muslim Americans have served valiantly in our military, and made the ultimate sacrifice. Captain Khan was one such brave example.” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also hailed the slain solider while distancing himself from Trump’s remarks — all without mentioning Trump’s name. “Captain Khan was an American hero, and like all Americans I’m grateful for the sacrifices that selfless young men like Capt. Khan and their families have made in the war on terror,”said McConnell,. “And as I have long made clear, I agree with the Kahns and families across the country that a travel ban on all members of a religion is simply contrary to American values.” “In recent days, Donald Trump disparaged a fallen soldier’s parents,” he wrote. “He has suggested that the

likes of their son should not be allowed in the United States — to say nothing of entering its service. I cannot emphasize enough how deeply I disagree with Mr. Trump’s statement. I hope Americans understand that the remarks do not represent the views of our Republican Party, its officers or candidates.” Senator Kelly Ayotte said she was “appalled that Donald Trump would disparage” the Khans “and that he had the gall to compare his own sacrifices to those of a Gold Star family.” “There is no greater sacrifice than to lay down one’s life for their country, and that’s the sacrifice that Capt. Humayun Khan made fighting to defend our freedom and our constitutional rights,”Ayotte said. “He was a true American hero. The Khan family deserves nothing less than our deepest support, respect, and gratitude, and they have every right to express themselves in any way they choose.” While denouncing Trump’s comments, none of the Republican leaders said they would alter their support for Trump’s presidential candidacy. Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign also reacted with a denunciation of Trump’s criticism. Spokeswoman Karen Finney tweeted: “Trump is truly shameless to attack the family of an American hero. Many thanks to the Khan family for your sacrifice, we stand with you.” Clinton’s former rival for the Democratic nomination, Bernie Sanders, also slammed Trump, saying he “will do everything I can to rid this country of the ugly stain of racism.”

TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the properly. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-730-2727 or 916-939-0772 for information regarding the trustee’s sale, or visit this Internet Web site www.servicelinkasap.com or www.nationwideposting.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case 161081167970-2. What Can We Learn from a Candidate’s Tax Forms?

By Desert Star Staff RICHMOND, Va. — Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has so far refused to release his tax returns. But what could be learned if he did? Tax forms are one of the best ways to answer some of the most important questions about any candidate, not just Trump, said Mark Horvit, executive director of the nonpartisan group Investigative Reporters and Editors. “Who has influence over them or who they have influence over - where their financial interests lie,” Horvit said, “and when you look at whether they tend to favor certain things that could potentially directly benefit their income.” Horvit said pushing to see Trump’s returns isn’t a partisan attack. When someone is wealthy and has a number of different income streams, he said, journalists and researchers need those documents to provide the public with a clear financial portrait. Trump, for his part, insists there’s nothing to see in his tax returns, and has said

Donald Trump has so far refused to release his tax returns. Journalists say those documents are crucial to getting a financial picture of a candidate. (Gage Skidmore/Wikipedia) he’ll release them as soon as he is done being audited. According to Horvit, one of the primary areas of interest in a candidate’s tax return is the tax rate they pay. While that’s hardly the only thing to see, he said it is important, since the people in office set the tax rates. “They’re in a position to make citizens pay money for government,” Horvit said. “So I think it’s a fair question to ask, ‘Are they themselves paying their fair share to the government?’”

Trump released a public disclosure form describing his finances in general terms. Horvit said that’s a poor substitute as disclosures are less detailed and often less binding legally than a tax return. He said he doesn’t buy Trump’s argument that he can’t release his tax forms because he’s being audited. “It’s a little bit hard to understand where he’s coming from on that,” Horvit said. “But if there’s a real argument to be made there, then how about the most

recent year’s tax return - last year’s, I suppose - for which everything’s finished?” Horvit’s group Investigative Reporters and Editors - is a professional organization whose mission is to improve investigative journalism. Its website also houses what Horvit called the Document Cloud: a space where a candidate could release documents to the public without having to go through a potentially biased news organization.

H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation gives grant

By Cara Van Dijk Palm Desert, Calif., –The H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation awarded a grant to the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert (CDMOD) to fund a traveling exhibit that emphasizes reading. The gift supports CDMOD’s mission and particularly its value of learning as it aims “to be a place that nurtures thoughtful, handson learning in a creative and engaging environment that celebrates learning as an innately joyful activity.” The museum expects to see about 25,000 children and their families through the Adventures with Clifford The Big Red Dog exhibit, which is based on books by award-winning author Norman Bridwell and the Scholastic television show that airs on PBS KIDS. The exhibit is scheduled to run from September 24, 2016 through January 9, 2017 during regular museum hours in the Traveling Exhibit building. Although kids of many ages will enjoy the exhibit, and even some family members may

be nostalgic seeing Clifford The Big Red Dog™ again, the exhibit is geared primarily for kids 2-8 years old. “We are grateful to the Berger Foundation for supporting this traveling exhibit,” said Carol Scott, CEO of CDMOD. “Special and limited-time exhibits like this often bring visitors back to the museum who haven’t been recently, and for those people who haven’t been to CDMOD lately, they will see exciting improvements to the museum. CDMOD is changing and growing to support our ever-changing and growing visitors!” Since CDMOD opened in 1990, the museum has been a valuable community resource for children and families by engaging curiosity and creativity through handson explorations of exhibits and programs. The Adventures with Clifford The Big Red Dog exhibit aligns with this concept by offering children fun, interactive adventures that innately teach. Kids can ride the ferry to Birdwell Island, where they will meet a 9-foot-

tall Clifford, then choose activities including delivering mail to island residents, filling Clifford’s food bowl, and taking to the stage on Emily Elizabeth’s Backyard Theater. These activities reinforce Clifford’s Big Ideas – life lessons that children master as they grow – such as being a good friend, helping others, working together, sharing and being fair. “The Children’s Discovery

Museum of the Desert engages kids in a way that not many other school lessons and home activities can,” said Catharine Reed, Program Director of the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. “We are excited to see the response from visitors to this exhibit, which emphasizes one of the most important fundamentals – early childhood literacy.” The Children’s Discovery

Museum of the Desert is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m.5 p.m. Sundays through the summer. For more information about the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert or its programs and events go to www.cdmod. org or call 760-321-0602. The Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert is located at 71-701 Gerald Ford Drive, Rancho Mirage.
