The Dakota Hotel Manchester features industrial-chic design with whimsical touches. Photo by Anthony Grant By Anthony Grant Manchester! What can I say about the world’s first industrialized city and one that has made its mark on the world in so many ways? Such is the undercover vitality of many cool cities when they are eclipsed by their bigger brethren (in this case, London). Manchester is a not only a fabulous British destination in its own right but is also an excellent gateway to the rest of England and indeed the world. I recently visited Manchester on a whirlwind tour thanks to Virgin Atlantic Airways, which now has three non-stop flights a week between LAX and Manchester International Airport. Of course, Manchester’s soccer teams (they call it football there), Manchester United F.C. and Manchester City F.C., are the stuff of legends. Beyond that and more recently Manchester has experienced a contemporary resurgence. Making it something of an athletic

endeavor merely keeping up the Mancunians, as the natives are called; the new hotels and restaurants just keep multiplying. Among the former, the new industrial-chic Dakota Hotel Manchester (www.dakotahotels.co.uk/ manchester) is among the best. Manchester quite happily marches to its own drum, with its evocative Victorian architecture. Reconverted industrial warehouses and canals and youthful energy all making it teem with northern promise. Any fan of modern British pop music will thrill to diving into the city streets that inspired the lyrics of Morrissey, and then there’s the gin. Manchester Three Rivers Gin is a gin “school” tucked into a disused railway in the Green Quarter. Up to 30 people at a time can now take part in the experience, which allows guests to learn about how they distill each bottle on-site. And then produce their very own bottle of

Manchester Taxi Tours, you will drink in the architecture and feast on the stories on a whistle-stop two-hour tour of the city from the comfort of a traditional black cab (manchestertaxitours.co.uk). Also a must, Hayley Flynn’s excellent street art tour (theskyliner.org). Speaking of feast, did I mention Mackie Mayor, the former meat market on Swan Street? It was brought back to life Quincy Marketstyle in October 2017 and is a hugely fun spot to enjoy some modern British fare with flair: the fish and chips I had here were phenomenal. (mackiemayor.co.uk). If you thrill to architecture that looks like it walked out of the pages of an Oscar Wilde story. Do go for a traditional English roast dinner at The Refuge, located in The Principal Hotel on Oxford Street (refugemcr.co.uk). Manchester is a veritable cultural smorgasbord and places like the Whitworth Art Gallery, and fantastic People’s History Museum are among
the essentials. Pop into the beautiful John Rylands Library, built in the 1890s, or the regal old Royal Exchange building, where they once traded cotton. For serious shopping, the famous British department stores of Harvey Nichols and Selfridges tempt. The lush Peak District is just about an hour out of town and the setting of stunning Chatsworth House, built in the 1560s. Afternoon tea within the estate at Flying Childers, with scones and dainty desserts served in a three-tiered stand, is an elegant delight. In nearby Bakewell, you can make your own Bakewell tart (bakewellpuddingshop. co.uk). These may not be low-fat, but they are delicious and put Krispy Kreme to shame. Viva Manchester! How to Plan for Traveling with Kids
By Desert Star Staff Families that travel with kids typically know tablets and other gadgets and activities can make the journey easier, and vacation rentals can make the stay more relaxing and affordable. These tips from the experts at Vrbo can help make it easier to hit the road with kids, whether it’s exploring exciting new places, visiting relatives or relaxing during an annual trip to the beach. pajamas go in the suitcase. If there’s a long journey ahead, consider temporarily lifting limits on tablet screen time and bring along a couple travel surprises like coloring books. Don’t overpack. Since many vacation rentals come with washers and dryers there’s no need to pack two outfits per day per child plus backups in case of spills. If the place your group is staying has a laundry room, pack enough clothing for half the trip then throw a load in the wash after a few days. Pack some detergent pods in a plastic bag in case it’s not provided. Pack snacks. Travel often messes with mealtimes, but you can keep hunger (and the crankiness that comes with it) at bay with portable snacks. Pack a selection of treats to tide over hungry bellies until you’re able to stop for a complete meal. Include a few items typically reserved for special occasions so you have the added benefit of excitement to distract from an unfamiliar eating schedule. Bring favorite toys. A sentimental and familiar item from home can help a child feel more secure in new surroundings. In fact, a
survey from Vrbo revealed just how popular teddy travel is, with more than half of those surveyed (55%) citing stuffed animals as the most important thing their child brings on vacation. However, 69% of those surveyed said their child has left a toy or stuffed animal behind while away from home. In the event a toy does get left behind, look into resources like Vrbo’s Teddy
Bear Service. Any traveler staying in one of the company’s vacation rental homes can call 1-774-VRBOTDY or email TeddyBearHotline@vrbo.com to report a lost teddy bear or other item of sentimental value, and the company will help track it down and expedite its return home. Plan for nap time. Whether you’re racing to put miles behind you or scurrying to catch a connecting flight, it’s
easy to get off track and miss nap time completely. If you’re likely to miss a nap, try to at least plan for some quiet time to let kids rest and rejuvenate. Also remember that travel can be tiring for kids who have outgrown naps on a regular basis and encourage them to grab some shut-eye before signs of exhaustion emerge. Senate Bill 323 – More “One Size Fits All” For HOAs By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Senate Bill (SB) 323 (Wieckowski) is now pending in the Assembly after passing through the Senate. The bill originally proposed to significantly expand election procedural requirements and now strays into additional areas, potentially creating even further problems for California HOAs. Since July 2006, when 2005’s SB 61 became law, HOAs have the most complex election requirements of all California nonprofit corporations. For example, HOAs are the only nonprofit corporations barred from using electronic voting (Civil Code 5115 requires paper ballots in double sealed envelopes). While many (including this author) felt SB 61 was overkill, SB 323 would take things even further. Under current Civil 5200(a) (9),
members can request the HOA membership roster, including www.desertstarweekly.com

names and addresses, but under Civil 5220 members can opt out of that roster and keep their information private. SB 323 would require adding email addresses to the available roster information, something which many homeowners prefer to keep confidential. A proposed amendment to Civil 5125 would add additional items for post-election member inspection, requiring signed exterior ballot envelopes, voter lists and proxies also to be available for member inspection. Many residents do not wish their signatures or voting record to be available for public inspection. Some associations have bylaws automatically disqualifying delinquent
members from voting, while others hold hearings under Corporations Code 7341 to suspend delinquent member voting August 7, 2019
rights. However, SB 323 would force associations to give ballots to all members – even to those deemed ineligible to vote. This would, in effect, cancel Corporations Code 7341, leaving HOAs as the only corporations unable to suspend member voting rights. SB 323 also would in a proposed revision to Civil 5115(a) require associations to send out pre-election alerts to members 30 days before sending out ballots, adding yet another expense and complexity to HOA elections. California Legislators have clearly forgotten that these laws apply to four-unit condos as well as 5,000+ member associations. The most troubling aspect of SB 323 is its apparent statewide eligibility standard for HOA board service. It is unclear whether the bill would establish a limited list of disqualifications or if the list is nonexclusive. Under SB 323, non-members could not serve (some HOA bylaws do not require directors to be members), but members actively suing the HOA can still serve. Members delinquent in their assessments can still serve on the board so long as they have a payment plan in place (even
if they refuse to pay the HOA’s collection costs). Why cannot HOA members determine their own board eligibility standards? Finally, the bill proposes to add a new Civil Code 5910.1, barring HOAs from suing members unless they can show they engaged in internal dispute resolution in “good faith” (which term is undefined). Legal fees will skyrocket as homeowners have a new defense, claiming that the HOA was not “in good faith” in its prelitigation attempts to resolve the matter. So, under the proposed new 5910.1, the longstanding Evidence Code 1152 inadmissibility of settlement discussions, applicable to all other litigants in California, would not apply to HOAs. Is Senator Wieckowski trying to help? He clearly is not listening to the HOA world. SB 323 is a terrible bill and hopefully the Assembly will reject it in August when it comes for a floor vote. A politics shift on gun taxes?
By Desert Star Staff After shootings in Canoga
Park, Gilroy, El Paso and Dayton, an assemblyman
hopes to jumpstart legislation that would impose $25 tax
on new firearm sales. Assemblyman Marc Levine, a Marin County Democrat: “Gun violence is extracting too high a price on society. A $25-gun tax to fund violence prevention is a small sacrifice for gun buyers.” The bill would generate $13 million a year to fund violence prevention programs, a legislative analysis said. Direct costs from gun violence in California are estimated at $1.4 billion a year. Levine’s bill stalled in the Assembly, and deadlines for such measures have come and gone. But the wave of violence could alter the politics, Levine believes: “Anything can happen
if political will is behind it.” Legislators have hesitated to approve new taxes since Josh Newman lost his Orange County Senate seat in a recall focused on his vote to raise gasoline taxes. By the numbers: 4.2 million California adults own guns, 14% of the population. In an indication of firearm sales, the California Department of Justice processed between 880,000 and 1.33 million dealer records of sale per year between 2015 and 2017. Some history: Lawmakers have been proposing gun and ammunition taxes since at least 2001, without success.
Police have confirmed that 26 people were injured in the shooting. Law enforcement
chief Greg Allen mentioned an alleged manifesto by the gunman, adding that the attack might have a “nexus” to hate crime. He said, however, that the police are still looking into whether the shooter indeed penned the document. They also confirmed that there was only one suspect taken into custody. The man, believed to be the only gunman, surrendered to officers after they arrived at the scene, police said. While the identities of the victims have not been revealed, Mexican authorities say three of the country’s nationals were killed in the shooting and a further six injured. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador
expressed condolences to the families via Twitter. The attacker, who is now in custody, was armed with an AK-style rifle when he went on a shooting spree inside the Walmart on Saturday afternoon. Harrowing videos have emerged on social media showing lifeless bodies lying outside and inside the store, as well as people taking cover inside the shop. The suspect has been identified in the media as Patrick Crusius, a Texas native from Allen, near Dallas. There have been reports of a Christchurch-massacreinspired manifesto that the attacker allegedly left behind, espousing anti-Hispanic extreme-right views.

presence in the Oregon District. According to the police, the FBI is assisting in the investigation. The Oregon District is one of Dayton’s ten historic neighborhoods, while East 5th Street is famous for many bars and restaurants. The shooting happened at or near
one of those establishments. The violence in Ohio comes just hours after a mass shooting in El Paso, where a single gunman killed 20 people and injured 26 others. The assault at a Walmart store on Saturday was reportedly a hate crime targeting Hispanic people.

Readiness Checklist: 5 Steps to Prep for Buying a Home
By Desert Star Staff For many Americans, making the jump to buying that first house is a significant achievement that allows them to put their mark on their own space, while creating room for family and pets. But how do you know you’re ready? Americans see homeownership as an investment in their future, yet they are concerned about the steps they need to take to put themselves into a position to buy, according to the “How Americans View Homeownership” survey conducted by The Harris Poll April 17–29, 2019, among 1,004 U.S. adults 21 and older on behalf of Wells Fargo. The study showed that 44 percent of non-homeowners identified saving for a down payment as a top barrier to buying, more so than any other obstacle. “Homeownership is very much a part of the American Dream, yet too many firsttime buyers don’t know where to start,” says Liz Bryant, Wells Fargo Home Lending’s national retail sales leader.
“We find that a great way to get moving down the path to homeownership is with a conversation. By reaching out to your mortgage lender, your banker or even a housing counselor, you can start putting together a plan that will help get you on your way.” Here are some steps to consider: • Research lenders and loan options. Identify a lender who has a breadth of home loan options, including low down payment mortgages, and who is willing to provide you with personalized guidance. Then just start the conversation. • Know your goal. Your mortgage consultant can help, and so can a financial health banker or a housing counselor. A discussion about spending, saving, debt and credit will help you make decisions about what you can afford, how much you need to save and whether you need to do work to improve your credit score. • Get your down payment ready. If you don’t already have one, create a budget for your monthly spending,
so you can identify areas where you can save. Set aside unexpected windfalls, such as tax refunds, to grow savings. • Keep an eye on overall debt. While there’s room for student loans and credit card debt, a good rule of thumb is to keep your overall debt level -- including your new mortgage -- at or below 36 percent of gross monthly income. • Think beyond the down
payment. Consider setting aside 1-2 percent of the purchase price of your home each year for maintenance projects. If that seems like too much, start with less and work your way up. More readiness tips can be found at wellsfargo. com/financial-education/ homeownership/. “Too many first-time buyers get intimidated by the down
payment or the work they might need to do around credit,” says Bryant. “Many don’t realize that there are lending options available for homebuyers with a range of credit scores, and programs that require buyers to put as little as three percent down. It’s important to explore your options, take it step by step and work toward your homeownership goals.” StatePoint

By Desert Star Staff ANNAPOLIS, Md. — With the incidence of hate crimes rising in Maryland and around the country, a state grant program is now accepting applications from religious congregations that want to boost security. Gov. Larry Hogan announced the Protecting Religious Institutions Grant program as part of his budget in January. Applications for the grants are now available to houses of worship of all faiths. Howard Libit, executive director of the Baltimore Jewish Council, said after shootings at synagogues and mosques around the country in recent years, the rise in religious hate crimes is a real concern. Congregations in Maryland have beefed up security by offering training, adding security cameras and reinforcing doors. And Libet said, most have opted to add security personnel. “To have, for example, an armed guard or armed off-duty officer just for a
few hours a week during Shabbat services - Friday night, Saturday morning - it’s tens of thousands of dollars a year,” Libet said. “It’s a major expense.” In 2017, 183 hate-crime incidents were reported to police and verified in Maryland, according to the state’s 2017 Hate/Bias Crime Report. Of those, 44 were based on religion. That means the incidence of verified religious bias crimes nearly tripled from 2016, when there were only 15. The Maryland report said 29 hate-crime incidents in 2017 were anti-Jewish and 12 were anti-Muslim. Libit said having to increase security is a balancing act for houses of worship, which are caught between needing to protect worshipers and wanting to be accessible to the entire community. “Houses of worship are supposed to be welcoming. We don’t want to be in a situation where we’re setting up metal detectors to go

Can You Help Environment by Hang Drying Their Clothes?
By Desert Star Staff For folks looking to become greener, environmental groups are suggesting that people pull their clothes out of the dryer this week. The Oregon chapter of the Sierra Club and Solar Oregon are hosting Hang Dry Your Laundry for Climate Change Week. Joe Wachunas, a Solar Oregon contractor, says this is one place where Americans can save a lot of energy. It’s estimated that each load of laundry uses around three kilowatt-hours of energy and each kilowatt-hour needs about one pound of coal. “So you’re talking about three pounds of coal every time you run your dryer, and there are estimates anywhere from 4% to 10% of residential houses’ electricity use is spent on the dryer,” he points out. Wachunas says the
beauty of hang drying is that it’s easy and folks only need a laundry line or drying rack. He adds for people who are afraid of colors fading in the sun, they can turn their clothes inside out. The eco-friendly Spin Laundry Lounge in Portland is hosting a celebration on Saturday to promote hang drying. Wachunas says his epiphany on hang drying came after spending a year as an exchange student in Italy, where only 3% of households have a dryer. He says dryers aren’t standard even in other developed countries. “In the United States, I find that most people – it’s not even on their radar screen to hang dry our clothes,” he states. “Our grandparents did it, my parents used to do it, but even environmentalists don’t even think about it that I’ve found. I don’t know
anyone else who hang dries their clothes in the United States in my community.” Solar Oregon is hosting a social media contest,
inviting folks to post pictures of their clothes drying. Participants should tag Solar Oregon with #hangdry. Everyone who enters
gets a free membership to the organization and a chance to be part of the 2020 Solar Winery Tour.

2,505 Barenaked ladies take over the beach in record-breaking skinny dip By Desert Star Staff Thousands of naked women descended on an Irish beach to break the world’s record for the most significant group skinny dip. The ‘Strip and Dip’ event took place at the Maghermore Beach in Wicklow on Friday. Women from across Ireland and beyond gathered in an attempt to create the biggest ever mass naked swim. Photographs show a sea of naked bodies running into the water, leaving piles of clothes on the beach behind them. The previous world record was set in March 2015, when 786 people had a communal skinny dip in Perth, Australia.
Finland has also claimed to have had the most significant dip, with 789 stripping off at a music festival in 2017. These women quickly smashed that record, with 2,505 people stripping off and running into the sea. The event was arranged as a charity swim to raise money for a children’s cancer charity. Many of the women taking part have battled cancer, and they proudly posed with their scars. “It’s basically giving a big ‘feck you’ to cancer.” organizer Dee Featherstone said. “For those who have cancer, they’re retaking ownership of their bodies,”

Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gov. Gavin Newsom in a C-130 at McClellan Airport By Desert Star Staff As Californians face a
new fire season, former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenneger
joined Gavin Newsom at McClellan Airport outside
Sacramento on Thursday to tour additions to the CalFire aircraft fleet, an upgrade that spans both administrations. Newsom said Schwarzenegger was “responsible for this day” as he demanded that the state upgrade its equipment. Schwarzenneger: “The biggest problem was that we had the greatest firefighters in the world … but we didn’t have the assets. We didn’t have the equipment.” The Great Recession restricted Schwarzenegger’s ability to spend. Not so Newsom’s. Newsom’s budget includes $127 million to expand the fleet to add C-130 air tankers and Black Hawk helicopters for nighttime firefighting operations. The upgrade is expected to
be completed by 2023. To understand the need, spend time this weekend reading two pieces of literary journalism about the Camp Fire, which destroyed Paradise and left 85 people dead. Jon Mooallem in the New York Times Sunday Magazine: “Paradise had prepared for disasters. But it had prepared merely for disasters, and this was something else.” Mark Arax in the California Sunday Magazine: “As scores of people were being burned alive and thousands more were frantically fleeing a ridge overstuffed with traffic, the utility decided to compose a tweet. It was sent out at 3:14 p.m. and informed residents not of the fire and its path but the reasons why PG&E had decided not to turn off the power.”
Preventing Aging Loved-Ones from Suffering Heat-Related Illnesses
By Jeffrey McManus, MD, California Medical Director for Humana Early signs of dehydration can be severe for family members and caregivers to notice in their aging loved ones. General symptoms include confusion, fatigue, decreased urination, and warmth to the touch. These symptoms can be misidentified as other health issues, but dehydration and other heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke, are particularly dangerous for older adults. According to the American Journal of Physiology, the body’s thermoregulation capacity, or ability to control body temperature, naturally decreases with age. Think of the thermoregulation system as the body’s internal heating and cooling system. Natural responses to warm temperatures, like sweating to cool the body, become less efficient over time. As the www.desertstarweekly.com
body becomes less capable of cooling itself, dehydration becomes an increasing concern. Dehydration is the depletion of fluids or electrolytes in the body. Failure to adequately respond to dehydration can quickly lead to heat exhaustion – the body’s inability to control its temperature. As the internal body temperature surpasses 103 degrees, the person enters a life-threatening condition. Heatstroke occurs when the sweat mechanism fails. If the body is unable to control its own temperature, heatstroke victims can suffer death or permanent disability without immediate emergency treatment. Hot summer temperatures are a severe concern for seniors and their caregivers. Remaining conscious of outside temperatures and taking a preventative approach is the best way to avoid dehydration and other heat-related illnesses. The following tips can help your aging loved ones reduce
their risk of dehydration: · Stay Hydrated by Drinking Plenty of Fluids: It’s recommended that healthy individuals drink at least four to six glasses of water a day. But plain water isn’t the only option. A refreshing summer drink can be enjoyable and keep the body hydrated. Unsweetened iced tea is a great choice. Or, mix a favorite fruit in a pitcher of water and leave it in the fridge overnight for a cool, fruity drink the following day. Caffeine and alcoholic beverages don’t count. In fact, try cutting those options from the daily diet, particularly when the summer temperatures rise. It’s helpful to treat proper hydration like a daily routine. Take steps to keep a drinking schedule that spreads fluid intake evenly throughout the day. Fill and stage multiple water bottles in convenient spots throughout the home. · Wear Loose Fitting Clothes: Baggier clothes keep August 7, 2019
the body cooler than tight-fitting options. Light-colored clothing, such as white or light blue, is a smart alternative to dark colors. Also, stay away from heavy cotton or thicker fabrics. The result is a summer style that is comfortable and helps keep the body cool all season long. · Stay Busy with Indoor Activities: If outside, stick to the shade. However, a better option is spending the day inside. That doesn’t mean staying home. Malls and movie theaters are options that keep
the air conditioning running. Or visit a neighbor. Bring your favorite water-based beverage and keep hydrated alongside a friend or loved one. The warm summer months are here. Understanding the symptoms of dehydration, while proactively managing the threats of heat-induced illnesses, are essential to the well-being of our aging loved-ones. HOROSCOPES ARIES
You love and appreciate your work and those you work with and communication is good with everyone (though you must battle against critical thoughts) and you want to help others more, which inspires them and then work is even better and more fulfilling and loyalty toward you emerges and then new goals are considered and workflow increases and so does success. It’s like a river flowing harmoniously for everyone. You stand at the river’s beginning.
TAURUS You may not be romantic outwardly because of so much work to be done to insure the future’s sustainability. But this doesn’t mean you feel less love. It’s just that you’re focused and determined and disciplined and must follow your instincts and intuition and not let relationship concerns get in the way. You seek intellectual activities that also offer fun and a bit of leisure. The environment is kind to you when you travel. Remember though, health first!
GEMINI Emotional and then physical safety and stability are concerns now and so you must assess, tend to, create safety measures around your home and self and then ask everyone to help maintain them. Everyone knows you change your mind so often they really can’t make plans with you. But for now, this
AUGUST 7 – 13, 2019 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES
has eased up and decisions made are decisions you follow through with. Or try to. Something ended this last month. What was it?
CANCER You feel the need to communicate with everyone, both casually and in-depth for you realize everyone has a gift and if they simply talk enough that gift emerges and then you learn more. You, too, have a gift, in fact, many gifts and when you speak, when you come out from under your crab shell, then we see your gifts too and we learn from them. You are very perceptive now, more than usual.
LEO There’s an inner and outer reality concerning something. They seem to be in opposition. You think you have to choose one over the other. Do you? Oppositions are actually only different sides of the same coin, seeking integration. Eventually they come together and unify. What is occurring that seems in opposition? Is it spiritual or material factors, self or other’s needs or values, being worthy or not worthy? Time will integrate the two.
VIRGO You want to talk about issues and ideas important to you things held deep inside and not often communicated; what you believe and how you want to serve; your new emerging identity and all the things you hope, wish and
plan to do. You’re practical and inventive and thoroughly modern in your approach. These may be important and applicable especially concerning family. You bring a new reality forth. At first, it’s shocking. Then accepted.
LIBRA Plans created long ago are now ready to be implemented and you’re on the road toward their fulfillment. I hope all that you expected, all that you hoped and waited for are available. There are some issues hidden behind the scenes not quite ready for the light of day. For now, you’re ordering and organizing your inner self so you can order and organize your outer realities, relationships and environments. Did a dream come true?
SCORPIO As changes continue, it’s good to have a get together of friends and acquaintance you care about. Include local sustainable and seasonal foods, scatter several interesting books around, set the music to old jazz standards. Perhaps you could suggest a subject to discuss, like how to create communities (the steps), what people would be attracted, the focus and purpose of community and how it would prepare everyone for the new times to come. Allow no criticisms. Have a Giveaway while saying goodbye.
SAGITTARIUS
Do all that you can to create compromise between yourself and those who see issues differently. Small disagreements can escalate quite quickly. Include good things in your compromises, so those around you feel they have been heard and listened to. Ask what they want and need and this will be reflected back to you in terms of recognition and rewards. Be dashing as you perform these acts of kindness. You’ll become even more attractive and radiant. New vistas beckon ahead.
CAPRICORN You could feel a bit overwhelmed due to just too many events flooding your reality, not eating adequately and in a timely matter, or simply because you’ve been “on” for just too long. When you’re upset you can lash out with words that hurt everyone, including yourself. Lay low for a while, maintain a bit more solitude, rest and recuperate, allow others to perform tasks while you’re in the garden reading. Tell everyone you need tender loving care.
consideration. Maintain humor each day as things change and then change some more.
PISCES The focus is on relationships, those close and intimate. This includes work partners and close friends. You find yourself with two trajectories – one seeks to create harmony and goodwill; the other to increase discipline and efficiency, forging ahead with ideas and plans. It seems the two are opposite and sometimes they are. You will have to bring them together, create a unity and synthesis. It may be difficult. Have willingness, dedication and intention. Then harmony prevails. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. She can be reached at risagoodwill@gmail.com.
AQUARIUS You may need to discuss issues with someone, perhaps a partner, parent, family, friend or roomie. Do this openly with candor and ease always using an informational neutral tone. Do not be frightened to discuss finances. Information is information knowing you’re speaking the truth holds you and those listening. Ask for teamwork, understanding and
Proclamation Law Aimed at Keeping “Memory of the Confederacy Alive”
By Desert Star Staff NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Gov. Bill Lee’s recent signing of a proclamation making July 13 Nathan Bedford Forrest Day, in observance of the Confederate general and early Ku Klux Klan leader, has many people wondering
why these decrees are on the books in the first place. Vanderbilt University history professor Richard Blackett said these kinds of laws aren’t as old as many people think. “I think many of these sorts of laws were passed in response to the successes
of the civil rights movement,” Blackett said. “And Nashville is at the center of the agitation over civil rights, and to a large extent is responsible for many of the successes achieved by the civil rights movement.” The law mandating governors declare
proclamations for days honoring military figures didn’t become law until 1969. While Gov. Lee has said he’s willing to reconsider the law, Blackett said he thinks it will be extremely difficult for Tennessee legislators to disentangle themselves from the proclamations law and similar legislation. Blackett pointed out that other designated observance days all honor leaders of the Confederacy. He said historians recognize and understand this type of legislation is
more about cultural identity and memory than it is about Tennessee history. “One is the recognition of Bedford Forrest, the other is a recognition of Robert E. Lee, and the third is what is known as Confederate Memorial Day, sometimes known as Jefferson Davis’s birthday. Only Bedford Forrest is a Tennessean,” he said. “So what this law is meant to do is to keep alive the memory of the Confederacy.” A bust of Forrest continues to be displayed inside the state Capitol.

Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ Roars Worldwide In 1994 the original “Lion King” not only won two Oscars it generated more than $400 million at the box office, making it the number one G-rated film of all time. Now a quarter of a century later, “The Lion King” has returned to the big screen and has generated 385 million dollars in the U.S. and over one billion worldwide. “The Lion King” still roars! John Favreau directs this new computer-generated version of “The Lion King.” The original animated story remains the same, but now all the animals look lifelike. Another carry-over from the original is James Earl Jones who still gives voice to Mufasa, just as he did in 1994. The story begins as Mufasa, and his mate Sarabi (Alfre Woodard) present their son Simba to all the animals in their kingdom as “Circle of Life” is sung. Everyone is overjoyed by the new arrival--well almost everyone. Mufasa’s younger brother Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor) resents the fact that the cub will be the future king--not him. JD McCrary is the voice for young Simba who playfully
sings “I Just Can’t Wait to be King.” Later he and Nala (Shahadi Wright Joseph) venture into forbidden territory where hyenas live. Soon they are chased by Shenzi (Florence Kasumba), Kamari (Keegan-Michael Key) and Azizi (Eric Andre) who envision the little ones as a tasty snack. Fortunately, Mufasa comes to their rescue--just in the nick of time. After a mild scolding Mufasa and Simba bond under the starry sky and all is forgiven. Later, after an accident, Scar convinces Simba that it’s all his fault. He then tells the cub to run away and never return. Lost and alone, Simba is befriended by Pumba, the warthog (Seth Rogen) and a funny little meerkat, Timon (Billy Eichner). To cheer him up they sing “Hakuna Matta” advising him to have “no worries”--just be happy. They also convert him to a vegetarian lifestyle. Their time together is a highlight of the film. Eventually, Nala (Beyonce) and Simba (Donald Glover) literally run into one another. Here’s where the beautiful
song “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” comes in. Nala then begs Simba to go home and save the lions from Scar and the hyenas. Even Pumba and Timon join in the fight. “The Lion King” has a lot to offer--music, drama, adventure, and comedy. It’s a perfect family film, but it may be too intense for very young viewers. “The Lion King” is rated PG for sequences of violence and peril and some thematic elements, Running time is
1 hour and 58 minutes. “The Lion King,” playing citywide, can also be seen at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. The El Capitan, which opened in 1926 when movie theatres were called movie palaces, has a beautiful interior and multiple stage curtains that rise before each and every show. There are Lion King displays in the lobby and downstairs where you can photograph the kids. Adjacent to the theatre is a Ghirardelli
Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop where you can purchase ice cream treats and Disney toys and videos. You also receive a chocolate treat as you leave the store. The El Capitan is a great place to take a date or your family. For further information, call 1-800-Disney6. “The Lion King” has a running time of 1 hour, 58 minutes and is rated PG for sequences of violence and peril.
Social Responsibility is Key to Career Happiness
By Desert Star Staff American children and teens, when asked the ageold question of what they want to be as adults. Lean toward careers that could bring personal fame or are just plain fun, rather than those that might contribute to the betterment of society or lead to scientific progress. “While we are focused on fame and fun, other countries are emphasizing discipline and a good work ethic,” says Dr. Steven Mintz (www.stevenmintzethics. com), author of Beyond Happiness and Meaning: Transforming Your Life Through Ethical Behavior. The latest example came in a survey Harris Poll conducted on behalf of Lego, where American children ages 8 to 12 picked vlogger/ YouTuber as their No. 1 career choice. Chinese children, in comparison, overwhelmingly chose astronaut. The results are similar to a survey Chicago-based marketresearch company C+R conducted a couple of years ago. American teenagers were asked about career aspirations and the largest percentage, 20 percent, said they want to be an athlete, artist or entertainer. Mintz says the emphasis on fame – combined with www.desertstarweekly.com
a trend of many employers trying to create a “fun” work environment for employees – is troubling. “Is this really what success looks like in the U.S.?” he asks. “Can we reasonably be expected to compete with the Chinese in the 21st century by making the workplace fun when the Chinese, who will likely surpass the U.S. as the world’s largest economy within the next ten years, has skyrocketed to the top through hard work and discipline?” However, eschewing fun for fun’s sake does not mean employees cannot find happiness at work. Mintz says that is better accomplished by creating a socially responsible workplace, which he says meshes nicely with the passion millennials and Gen Z have for social causes. Some ways to help employees find happiness and meaning on the job, he says, include: Establish an ethical culture. Companies should strive to create an ethical workplace culture where employees are encouraged to serve the interests of the company’s stakeholders. Be a Hero this Halloween
By Desert Star Staff Being a hero goes beyond dressing up in a costume this Halloween season. Children, families and schools across the country can channel their own superpowers to help deliver lifesaving supplies to children in need this October. One way to use your superpowers is to Trickor-Treat for UNICEF, which began in 1950 when girls and boys across the United States collected coins in hand-painted milk cartons
to help children affected by World War II. Celebrating its 69th year, this nostalgic tradition continues today as America’s longest running youth volunteer program with generations of children running door to door holding signature orange boxes and singing, “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF.” With over $180 million raised for health care, education, nutrition and more, the program has evolved into a month-long celebration of the power of kids helping
kids. Throughout October, kids, parents and teachers across the country can be real superheroes by collecting donations, big and small. Equipped with the iconic orange boxes, families can raise funds that add up to lifesaving change. As little as $1 can provide safe water to a child for more than 2 months; $3 can provide seven packets of therapeutic food; $5 can provide a pack of 10 notebooks and $7 can provide one warm
fleece blanket for a child. Halloween has become a “heroic” way to help others and build the next generation of global citizens. When kids trick-or-treat for a cause, they learn about global issues and feel empowered to make a difference. Start creating real-world change by picking up your own little orange box. With the support of Visa Inc., the iconic box will glow in the dark, allowing superpowers to shine even brighter.

August 17, 2019, marks the 42nd annual Tribute Day to the young man who has become known as the King of Rock N Roll. More important than all of his honors and accomplishments, is the legacy of what he stands for has grown. Right he was named entertainer of the 20th Century where his fame and great music carry on into the 21st Century. Even today, 42 years later, he is remembered. His music lives on, but equally important is HIS bringing black culture and harmony to our
mainstream. Glen Glenn Rock A Billy hall of fame great said, “I have traveled the world. Very few people know the name of the American President but just say Elvis, and they come alive”. We are fortunate to have preserved his culture, memory, and presence in Palm Springs, California, where he lived and Honeymooned with Priscilla. Elvis lived here from 1967 to 1968. Priscilla cherished the memory of their honeymoon on May 1, 1967, and that Lisa Marie was born exactly 9 months later. Southern California is a lot closer than Memphis. Imagine Elvis’ Amazement at what would become 50,000 tribute artists in the United States alone and does not include the world wide ones that have never been counted. The live living room concert starts at 1 pm in air-conditioned comfort. It is the exact location that Priscilla chose to use as a theme and décor of the two Gladys and Vernon suites in the Guest Quarters hotel

eart disease, cancer, unintentional injuries, chronic lower respiratory disease and stroke. These top five causes of death in the United States all have a higher incidence of death among rural residents and research points to lack of access to health care as a culprit. Today, rural hospitals are closing at a rapid pace, expanding an already vast health care desert (defined as inhabited areas more than 60 minutes away from an acute care hospital) across the country. According to the University of North Carolina's Rural Health Research Program, since 2010, more than 105 of America's 1,700 rural hospitals have closed. Addition ally, a Navigant report found that 21% of rural hospitals are at high risk of closing unless their financial situations improve. Every day, rural Americans find themselves farther from medical care.
Practical challenges facing patients Fatal injuries and illnesses aside, rural residents face other practical concerns related to the health care in their communities. Doctors are more concentrated in urban areas, while there are shortages in rural communities. A shortage of doctors can mean less availability for appointments, difficulty capturing enough attention from a busy provider, longer distances to reach a physician and limited access to specialists. Statistically, rural residents tend to be older and need more frequent visits to their primary doctors and other specialists. Pregnant women have to travel even farther to deliver a baby, leading to an increased risk of complications at birth. Similarly, prenatal and postnatal care are harder to access. Rural residents often enjoy more outdoor activities (such as hunting, hiking and riding ATVs) than urban residents and therefore are at a greater risk of injury that requires treatment at a trauma center.
Airborne answer
One solution to fill the gap in rural health care is air medical services, which transport patients to critical care facilities in minutes. With nearly 90% of patients transported living in rural areas, air ambulance services are an essential part of health care access in these communities. However, just like rural hospitals, air ambulances are threatened as well. Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement rates have remained steady for decades, while operational costs required for air medical services have increased, creating a financially unsustainable situation. Some private insurers also refuse to cover air medical services or pay minimal costs, requiring patients to assume the balance. Visit globalmedicalresponse.com/protectpatients to learn more about these services in your area.
How to take action
The challenges facing rural health care access may be significant, but rural residents can take individual actions to make a difference for themselves, their families and even their communities. Express support to elected officials. Rural residents can call or write letters to their senators and representatives and demand they keep local hospitals open and protect access to air medical services. Reaching members of Congress at their local offices may be more effective than contacting their federal offices. Support efforts to secure grants. Some universities have been given grants from the Health Resources & Services Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and
With increasing frequency, insurance companies are not covering the full cost of medical emergencies, leaving families with outofpocket expenses they didn’t expect. If you need medical transport and a physician or first responder determines air evacuation is the best – or only – option to get you to care, you shouldn’t have to worry about the bill you’ll receive afterward. Many emergency service providers
Human Services, to create or expand community health initiatives and facilities in rural areas. Explore alternative sources of care. Many rural areas have community health workers who complete home visits to assist people with chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure. Although their training is limited compared to that of a doctor or nurse, their service increases health care access and they’re able to spend more time with patients. Get educated about your care. One role of community health workers is teaching patients about how to manage their own medical needs. This education helps residents be proactive and preventative in their health care, which can reduce the need for hospitalizations in certain cases, such as learning how to properly manage diabetes. Make an emergency plan. For families who reside in a rural community, it’s a smart idea to have a plan in place for how to respond in the event a medical emergency. The plan should include information about the location of the closest hospital, emergency contact information in the community and other details necessary to gain emergency care. Consider remote access care. Another option for both rural and urban residents alike is telemedicine, which allows patients to connect with a doctor or nurse virtually using technology and without having to travel. The twoway communication can facilitate evaluation and treatment for minor conditions. The service is offered as a costsaving incentive through some insurance plans, as well as private providers.
have support efforts in place to help you focus on recovery, not finances. For example, many air medical companies provide patients access to their patient advocates, who work with the patient’s insurance provider to properly cover air medical transport, taking the patient out of the middle. This process can result in significantly lower costs for the patient, often amounting to just the usual copay and deductible.

How to Transfer Your Military Skills to the Corporate World
By Desert Star Staff A military background brings with it an ability to collaborate, problem-solve and thrive under pressure, making veterans well-positioned to take on leadership roles in the corporate world. Having worked in the banking industry for more than 25 years and in his 30th year with the U.S. Army, Jerry Quinn is an example of someone who has maximized his military leadership skills in the corporate world. As senior vice president, and head of Enterprise Military Talent External Recruiting at Wells Fargo, Quinn also serves as chairman of the Association of Military Banks of America. To help make your transition from military service go smoothly, Quinn is offering the following tips and insights: • Know yourself: “Knowing yourself is a key leadership principle,” says Quinn. “By understanding what your values, capabilities, strengths and weaknesses are, you can step into a leadership role that will allow you and your team to thrive.” • Know your organization: Understand the ins and outs of the organization you work for or want to work for, including its vision, mission and objectives, as well as the company’s current capabilities and potential for growth. • Set the example: “Leaders set the example by which others follow, so be sure to treat your team and customers with respect and gratitude, and always lead from the front,” says Quinn. “Being proud of what you do can be infectious.” • Build a team committed to excellence: Good leaders attract good talent and assist others in achieving their success. When benchmarks are met, give the team the credit -- you aren’t a leader without them. • Make and work your plan: When facing challenges, make it your business to pull your team through it. Stay disciplined. If you have a deadline or have made a promise, always deliver on it. “Don’t let your activity dictate your priorities; Your priorities need to dictate your activity,” says Quinn. • Be valued: Consider specifically seeking out positions with employers who value the leadership, discipline and service record of military veterans, veterans with disabilities, National Guard members, and Reservists, and then take advantage of any resources offered by the company. The existence of a military affairs program, such as the one established by Wells Fargo in 2012, is a good sign that a given employer is committed to hiring and retaining veteran team members. In the case of Wells Fargo, the company offers such

Artist: Beth Bombara Title: Evergreen (All The Right Pills/Lemp Electric) You might like if you enjoy: Aimee Mann, Phoebe Bridgers Tell me more: Singersongwriter Beth Bombara’s new album “Evergreen” (set for release on August 9) finds the songstress tapping into that magical sonic-sphere comprised of equal parts melancholy, melody, literate verse, and solid songcraft. The Michigan native who now calls St. Louis home created the 10-song disc while spending time in a remote cabin nestled in the wilderness of the Rock Mountains and the results are glorious. The luxurious opening track “I Only Cry When I’m Alone” recalls some of Aimee Mann’s best work;
as if that wasn’t enough of a recommendation the disc’s subsequent cuts offer endless opportunities to hear the power of the singer-guitarist’s knack for crafting undeniable material that showcases her emotive soprano and the importance of arrangements that are nuanced and come in the service of the songs. Great songs abound on “Evergreen” as evidenced by the shimmering title track, haunting “Anymore,” Americana-tinged “Tenderhearted” and “Does It Echo?” and the melodic rocker “Good News.” Information: BethBombara.com. Artist: Radio California Title: Chewing Gum Kind of Day (Jesse Ojeda) You might like if you enjoy: Youth Gone Mad, Hüsker Dü Tell me more: Southern California-based avant-garde prog-rockers Radio California are back with another batch of edgy, groundbreaking and original tracks that mix and mash punk, rock, blues and art damage across the
involving “Chewing Gum Kind of Day.” The 10-track album challenges the listener at every turn, with multi-layered tracking of instruments and hypnotic vocals courtesy of leader Jesse Ojeda. Standouts on this album include the wistful “You Can’t Go Back,” driving “Giant,” and haunting “When Love is Gone.” The lyrics capture the edginess of modern life to be sure, but there is also a hopeful spirit where there is always a promise of something better ahead. An interesting and independent album worth discovering. Information: https://store.cdbaby.com/ Artist/RadioCalifornia1. Global stock markets crash as US trade war with China escalates
By Desert Star Staff Escalation of US-China trade tensions spooked investors as Wall Street opened deep in the red on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 580 points, or around 2 percent, after the opening bell. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite were www.desertstarweekly.com
down 2 percent and 1.3 percent respectively. US stocks followed the downturn on the Asian markets. Japan’s Nikkei declined 1.74 percent on trade tensions concerns, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 2.85 percent and China’s Shanghai Composite closed 1.62 percent down.
European stocks also tumbled on Monday with the FTSE 100, representing the leading companies listed on the London Stock Exchange, down 2.78 percent. France’s CAC 40 dropped by 2.26 percent and Germany’s DAX was trading more than 5 percent lower in late afternoon trading. US President Donald August 7, 2019
Trump took to Twitter Monday to call Washington’s trade war rival China a currency manipulator after the renminbi dropped below seven per dollar for the first time in over a decade. China’s national currency sank following Trump’s earlier threats to hit Beijing with new tariffs in less than a month amid the escalating trade standoff between the two world’s largest economies. The president was quick to say that the move will eventually backfire on China. “It’s called ‘currency manipulation,’” he tweeted. “This is a major violation which will greatly weaken China over time!” It’s not the first time Trump has slammed China for this, but
the US Department of Treasury refrained from officially labeling Beijing a currency manipulator, placing it on the monitoring list instead. Apart from China, the list now includes Japan, South Korea, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam. The People’s Bank of China (PBOC), which is in charge of the yuan’s exchange rate, blamed the weakening of the currency on the US’ own actions, such as unilateral, protectionist measures, as well as the expectation of additional tariffs on Chinese goods, according to Xinhua. The central bank also said the yuan has strengthened 20 percent against the dollar over the past two decades.

Dayton shooter used Kalashnikov-type rifle, 10 dead By Desert Star Staff The Dayton, Ohio mass shooting suspect used a Kalashnikov-type rifle to kill 9 people before being killed by police, the city mayor said. Local hospitals treated 27 people in the aftermath, and some remain in critical condition. Mayor Nan Whaley and other Dayton officials gave an update on the night shooting in the city’s historic center. The Kalashnikov-wielding attacker was wearing body armor and had several high-capacity magazines for his rifle, the mayor said. He was shot dead by police officers, who arrived at the scene less than a minute after the massacre began. Of the 27 people who were brought to hospitals or walked in with injuries in the aftermath of the shooting, 15 have been
discharged. Five patients are in critical or serious conditions, with multiple surgeries scheduled to treat them. Whaley said the Oregon district, where the shooting took place, will be open later in the day. In the early hours of Sunday, a gunman opened fire at people in front of Ned Peppers Bar on Dayton’s East 5th Street, where several pubs and restaurants are located. The police said the neighborhood is one of the safest in the city, and that their rapid response was made possible by their patrol schedule. Speaking earlier to CNN, Whaley said she’s been “a long proponent of the ban on assault weapons,” adding that the shooting in her town only proves her point.
By Desert Star Staff As many as 20 people have died after a man armed with an AK-style rifle stormed a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. A white male, who is believed to be the only gunman, is in custody. An alleged manifesto of the shooter has emerged. The suspect has been reportedly identified as 21-year-old Patrick Crusius, though police have not officially released his name yet. The shooter used ‘AK-style’ rifle A still from a CCTV camera has emerged online showing a suspect entering the Walmart wielding an AK-style rifle, which media reports have referred to as an “AK-47.” Police have not confirmed the exact make of the weapon, though it appears to be a civilian semi-automatic variant of the assault rifle. The man is seen sporting military-style cargo pants, a black T-shirt, and shooting ear protection. Multiple victim’s dead, scores injured Police have confirmed that 26 people were injured in the shooting in addition to the 20 who have died. At least 22 people were taken to two Texas hospitals in the wake of the attack, including two children. Graphic footage from the scene emerged online showing
at least four bodies outside and inside the Walmart. Alleged manifesto: Anti-Hispanic, mentions Christchurch shooting Ahead of the massacre, the suspected shooter allegedly posted a four-page manifesto online on the notorious imageboard, 8chan. The document, which has emerged on social media and is currently being studied by the FBI, was influenced by the manifesto of the Christchurch mosque shooter, who massacred over 50 people in New Zealand in March. The author of the alleged manifesto calls the attack on the Walmart a “response to [the] Hispanic invasion of Texas” and expresses extreme-right views, voicing his support for the Christchurch shooter. Police Chief Greg Allen mentioned the “manifesto” during a press conference, adding that the attack might have a “nexus” to hate crime. He said, however, that the police are still looking into whether the shooter indeed penned the document. Meanwhile, a relative of a witness to the shooting told KTSM-TV that the gunman was raving about “gamer revolution” – a reference to an obscure online meme – during the rampage.
“When your city is the 250th mass shooting that has happened this year, I think it has to beg the question: what are we going to do?” she said. “Look, I have had calls from dozens of mayors across the country because
we’ve all been through this and the question is when are we going to have enough?” The mass shooting in Ohio was the second in the US in less than 24 hours. Earlier, 20 people were killed and 26 others injured
in El Paso, Texas, in what appears to have been a hatemotivated crime. Unlike the shooter in Dayton, the alleged perpetrator of the El Paso massacre was apprehended alive by the police.

y 2050, the senior population (adults age 65 and older) will be more than double that of the world’s youngest citizens, and the number of people living beyond age 80 is expected to triple over the next 30 years. As the aging population increases, some 11.3 million seniors are living alone, according to the Institute on Aging. In addition, women are twice as likely as older men to live by themselves. Without proper support, seniors may face a wide range of issues including limited mobility, chronic conditions, improper nutrition and feelings of loneliness. For example, older adults can have problems chewing or may take medications which interfere with their appetites. However, research shows lack of companionship may be the biggest challenge. In fact, an AARP survey found 1 in 5 adults over the age of 40 were “socially disconnected,â€? which can impact health. There is likely a wide range of opportunities to enhance the lives of seniors in your area. Numerous programs and agencies exist to help you determine the best way to make a difference. One example is Ready to Care, an initiative from Home Instead Senior Care that challenges people to complete weekly care missions. Each activity guides members through various ways to give to senior-related causes, learn about the aging crisis and issues impacting seniors, and serve seniors through small actions of kindness. Most care missions are simple acts, such as opening a door, learning about Alzheimer’s or helping with a chore. Each week, a new mission is delivered to participants’ phones via text message. Small gestures, like these simple acts of kindness, can go a long way toward improving a senior’s day. Physical assistance: Most seniors are eager to retain their independence, but everyday tasks can pose fall risks or require exposure to harsh weather conditions that can be dangerous to older adults.

Ease Kids Back into School with Confidence
By Desert Star Staff There’s nothing like a major milestone in a child’s life to test a parent’s confidence. Big changes like a new school or classroom can be trying for kids and adults alike, but tackling the transition a little at a time can make it easier on everyone. Most parents agree that being confident is important, but only about 1 in 3 parents feels confident on a typical day, according to KinderCare’s Parent Confidence Report. However, experts say your own feelings can impact youngsters. Whether your child is making a big change like stepping up from pre-K into kindergarten or entering a new grade in the same building, there’s likely to be some trepidation. However, each child is different, which means reactions to change can vary. Some kids show up ready and raring to go, eager to explore and meet new friends, while others can be a little clingy, tearful or even refuse to look at the teacher or take a step through the door. If you think your child might have trouble making the transition, consider these strategies from the experts at KinderCare to help ease both of you into a more comfortable place and build confidence for a successful school year. 1. Set up classroom visits before school starts. Sometimes fear comes from the unknown. By visiting ahead of time and seeing firsthand, your child can become familiar with the layout of the classroom, meet the teachers and know what to expect, which
can help alleviate some of the anxiety and jitters. 2. Talk with your child’s teacher about the transition. Your child’s teacher should be your partner, so be open and honest from the start. Talk about how your child handles change, what causes stress or what behaviors the teacher might expect. Don’t be afraid to call and ask for updates on your child to see how things are going. Set up regular check-ins over the next few weeks to talk about any additional support your child may need. 3. Avoid sneaking away from your child at drop-off. Talk about what will happen ahead of time and create a consistent and predictable drop-off ritual, such as two high-fives, a hug and a wave from the window, to ensure your child feels secure and safe. Continue this routine every day to help your child get used to the classroom environment and make sure the process is a quick, happy one. While you’re typically welcome in most classrooms, lingering too long can make it harder on your child once you do leave. 4. Be enthusiastic. Just like laughter, excitement is contagious. Rather than focus on nerves or uncertainty, share your own memories from school including how you felt at the beginning of a new school year and the excitement of learning and meeting new friends, which can help your child get hyped up, too. 5. Set up a work station at home. Creating a designated space at home for your little learner to do

homework, read, write, draw and complete art projects can help set him or her up to develop good study habits. Stock this station with colored paper, crayons and markers, pencils, glue sticks,
scissors, books, stickers and other necessary tools, and leave room for stowing a backpack. Encourage your child to spend time working on educational endeavors in the space each night.
