By combining this strategy with establishing a kiddie ROTH I.R.A., more taxes are reduced. If the parent has maxed out their ROTH I.R.A. contribution, they can offer matching contributions to their child’s plan, offering another tax deduction to the parent.

This would not affect their ability to qualify for the Federal Student Aid program. An I.R.A. account can give your child the opportunity to learn about saving and investing, provide them with a $10,000 tax-free withdrawal for their first home, and build an educational fund.

It will grow tax-sheltered while benefitting from compounding interest. Your child can use this money to their advantage throughout their lifetime to solve life challenges and hold it to age 70 1/2 when they must take required annual distributions.

College students working in a family business are eligible for the American Opportunity Tax Credit ($2,500 a year for four years of postsecondary education). It is a tax credit of up to $2,500 of the cost of tuition, fees and course materials paid during the taxable year. Also, 40% of

the credit (up to $1,000) is refundable. This means you can get it even if you owe no tax. Parents cannot claim this deduction. If your child earns enough income, they may be able to escape the kiddie tax on gifts of appreciated securities.

Together, these strategies can give you kids a get-rich boost: lower income taxes, avoid a tax hit on investment gains, help to reduce college expenses and provide a head start on tax-advantaged savings.

Other costly expenses which a parent may pay, such as health, dental, critical illness, long-term care, and life insurance can be deducted from the business income before tax.

The payroll taxes paid by the employee and employer are sometimes discounted.

However, by having your child on a payroll, you are protecting them from loss of income from work-related injuries; you are helping them accumulate their social security credits, and defending in case of disability with State Disability Insurance.

Furthermore, if something happens with the business, they will receive income continuation with unemployment insurance.

Further deductions can be taken by the business as the child becomes more valuable to the company, such as Key Man life insurance and Buy/Sell agreements

Dear Kelly: Several residents used to take our dogs to an enclosed common area to play. The area was not designated for any specific purpose. One day the HOA president announced that dogs would no longer be allowed in that area. The board then invited residents with grandchildren to take advantage of that common area for play.

Wouldn’t each resident who takes their dog to the area be covered through each individual homeowners insurance?

Kelly: I have two service dogs.

The board has received a picture of me and one dog, on leash, standing or urinating on their grass. The board wants to find my dog a nuisance and fine me. The county ordinance says all owners of pets shall try to keep animals off property but in the case of defecation, shall immediately pick it up, which I do, and nuisance only applies to noise and acts of attacks or biting, However, this board seems to reserve the right to declare an animal a nuisance.

The fact that your dog is a service dog does not exempt it from complying with the rules applying to other dogs, and if its activities become a nuisance it might become an “unreasonable accommodation” and have to go. However, one incident is not normally considered enough to make a dog a nuisance (aside from serious misbehavior such as biting or menacing others).

Boards Barking About Dogs

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Mr. Richardson: Our CC&R’s limit the number of pets a homeowner can have to a “reasonable” number. City law states a resident outside of an HOA can have up to 4 dogs. Our association manager insists we have to abide by city law. Is that right?

Dear F.D.: Per Civil Code Section 4205, governing documents cannot conflict with state law.

Unless your city in its ordinance exempts HOA residents, your association must, like any homeowner in that city, follow the law. The association could adopt a stricter standard, but it cannot be less strict than the city, as the public law sets the floor below which associations may not go. Also, it is the city’s job to enforce ordinances, so the board might not have to become involved (except for a call to the animal control department).

Most homeowners do not research city ordinances, so if a pet limitation is important to your community, it is better to state it clearly in the governing

Medicare’s Future Critical Issue for Wisconsin Voters

By Desert Star Staff MADISON, Wis. – Ahead of next week’s primary election, new data reveals just how crucial Medicare is for the future of the state.

Lisa Lamkins, federal issues advocacy director for AARP Wisconsin, says Medicare helps cover health care costs for more than 1 million Wisconsinites.

But she adds that it doesn’t just help older adults get the affordable care they need.

“In terms of what it does for our local economy, Medicare invests about $11.6 billion just in the state of Wisconsin,” she points out. “That is a

big number that keeps a lot of businesses operating.”

Lamkins says thousands of hospitals, nursing homes, doctor’s offices and other large and small businesses are able to keep their doors open because of Medicare, which accounts for nearly 19 percent of state and local government spending in Wisconsin.

Medicare helped pay the health care costs of 56 million Americans in 2017, and invested about $710 billion into the national economy.

However, Lamkins notes that voters are not hearing from the candidates about

their plans to strengthen the program for the future.

“Critical issues like Medicare, Social Security, caregiving, financial security, all of these are on the line in Wisconsin’s election this year,” she points out. “We want to make sure the candidates for office are paying attention to these issues that really matter to voters.”

Lamkins adds that future generations also are counting on programs such as Medicare and Social Security to be strong so they can get the benefits they’ve earned.

citizen groups want to put an end to the tightrope walk over redistricting once and for all.

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Trump administration is halting the push for higher fuel-efficiency standards for cars – and wants to take away California’s ability to set its own standards.

The administration says rolling back the Obama-era rules would save buyers of new vehicles about $2,000, while consumer groups counter that better fuel efficiency saves money at the gas pump.

The proposal would also eliminate a federal waiver that has allowed California to set more stringent cleancar rules. On Thursday, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra vowed to file a lawsuit against the plan.

He says the state has been setting emission standards for close to 50 years.

“That’s why we’re the only state in the nation to have a waiver from the

federal government,” says Becerra. “That’s why we have led from the very beginning when it comes to keeping our environment as clean as possible. And that’s why we’re prepared to lead again, when it comes to protecting the national standards we have for cleaner cars.”

At least 19 other states have said they will join California in the suit.

The Trump administration also says freezing the miles per gallon for cars at 35 – rather than 54 in the current standards – means people would drive less, which would lower the risk of car crashes.

However, outside experts and even EPA scientists have contested this point.

There’s a 60-day comment period on the proposed changes.

Doctor Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association, warns they’d take the country backward

legislation to prevent gerrymandering in 15 states for possible solutions, and is now offering the results to North Carolina lawmakers,

urging them to make changes.

Jennifer Bremer, state chair of the League, said one conclusion they reached is that it’s difficult to remove the State Assembly from the redistricting process.

“The Legislature is very rarely eliminated from the process entirely,” Bremer said.

“What are the options that would keep the Legislature still having a significant role, but at the same time create a much better process that’s more open and that is based on using a commission?”

Several states allow state lawmakers to choose the commission members who draw voting-district lines, which maintains their involvement but removes them from making the decisions.

Bremer said she and others are encouraging state lawmakers to find a solution before the redistricting process begins

again after the 2020 Census.

The legal defense of North Carolina’s redistricting from the 2010 Census has cost the state more than $5 million and created voter confusion in some districts.

Bremer said it’s important to find a new system soon - one that works for everyone.

“The next redistricting cycle starts in 2021, when the Census data is received in the state,” she observed. “So, we need to have something in place before then that can lead to a much better process; put an end to all these court cases.”

In addition to creating an independent commission with the Legislature’s involvement, the League of Women Voters found it’s also important to make the commission’s decisions final - and to include citizens and impartial experts on the commission.

1 rack (about 2 pounds) baby back ribs 3 tablespoons firmly packed brown sugar 1 tablespoon Lawry s Seasoned Salt 4 tablespoons hot sauce, divided, plus additional for spreading and serving (optional)

Sandwich 1 soft rench loaf (12-14 inches), split olive oil Lawry s Seasoned Salt McCormick coarsely ground black pepper 1/4 small red onion, thinly sliced 1/4 cup crumbled blue cheese To make slaw: In medium bowl, whisk mayonnaise, lemon juice,

seasoned salt and pepper. Add cabbage, carrot, celery, celery leaves and parsley; toss to combine. Sprinkle with additional seasoned salt and pepper, to taste.

To make ribs: Prepare grill for indirect medium heat at about 350 F. Insert butter knife between membrane and bone on backside of ribs. Grab membrane with paper towel then pull to remove membrane; discard. Rub ribs on both sides with brown sugar and seasoned salt. rap ribs tightly in aluminum foil and place on indirect-heat side of grill. Grill ribs, turning once until meat is tender and pulling away from bone but not totally falling apart, about 1 hour, 15 minutes-1 hour, 30 minutes. Remove ribs from grill.

Unwrap ribs and let cool until cool enough to handle. Using sharp knife, carefully slit skin on

back of ribs and remove bones, keeping slab in one piece.

Place boneless rib slab on directheat side of grill, rounded-side up, and brush top with 2 tablespoons hot sauce. Grill until underside begins to crisp, about 2 minutes.

Carefully flip ribs and brush top with the remaining hot sauce.

Continue to grill ribs until glossy and carameli ed, about 2-3 minutes.

To assemble sandwich: Scoop out most of soft insides of top of French bread to make room for toppings. Brush cut sides with oil and sprinkle with seasoned salt and pepper. Grill on direct-heat side of grill until bread is toasted and grill marks appear, about 3 minutes.

Place ribs on bottom of loaf.

Brush with additional hot sauce, if desired, and top with slaw, onions and blue cheese. Cover with top of loaf. Cut into four pieces.

Smokehouse Maple-Brined Pork Chops

Servings: 4 1/3 cup sea salt 1/4 cup, plus 2 tablespoons and pinch, McCormick Grill Mates Smokehouse Maple Seasoning 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar, divided 8 cups water, divided 4 bone-in center-cut pork chops (3/4-inch thick, about 2 1/2-2 3/4 pounds total) vegetable oil 1 lemon, cut in half 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 Granny Smith apples, each peeled, cored and cut into six wedges 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh chives (optional) In medium saucepan, whisk salt, 1/4 cup seasoning, 1/4 cup sugar and 4 cups water. Bring to simmer, whisking constantly, until salt and sugar dissolve. Pour in remaining water and mix thoroughly. Transfer brine to large container with lid and cool to room temperature. Add pork chops to brine. Cover and refrigerate 8-10 hours.

Heat grill to medium-high heat.

Remove pork chops from brine and pat dry with paper towels. Brush lightly with oil. Season both sides of pork with 2 tablespoons seasoning.

Grill until bottom side of pork chops are well marked and charred, 7-9 minutes. Flip and grill 4-6 minutes, or until cooked through and internal temperature registers 145 F. Let rest under tented foil.

Place large cast-iron skillet on grill. Juice one lemon half into small bowl. Add 1 teaspoon lemon juice and remaining sugar to skillet and stir with heatproof spatula until mixture resembles wet sand. Cook with grill open, stirring frequently, until sugar melts and deepens to amber, about 8 minutes. Add butter and stir until melted. Once foam subsides, add apples.

Close grill and cook, stirring gently to coat apples in caramel, until apples are tender-crisp, about 8 minutes. Remove skillet from heat and add remaining lemon juice and pinch of seasoning; stir gently.

Arrange pork chops on platter and top with apples. Zest remaining lemon half over dish.

Sprinkle with chives, if desired.

Servings: 8 2 tablespoons McCormick Grill Mates Montreal Steak Seasoning, divided 2 pounds 80 percent lean ground beef 8 ounces sliced medium or sharp white cheddar cheese 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup yellow mustard 8 long pickle slices, plus 2 tablespoons brine 1 round loaf soft bread (10 inches), cut in half horizontally olive oil sea salt freshly ground black pepper 1 large heirloom tomato, thinly sliced 1 small red onion, thinly sliced 8 slices bacon, cooked 2 cups shredded iceberg lettuce Line 9-inch round cake pan with aluminum foil, leaving extra foil over edges of pan.

Sprinkle with 2 teaspoons steak seasoning.

Press half of ground beef into cake pan.

Layer cheese in middle, leaving 1/2-1-inch border around sides. Sprinkle with additional

Refrigerate until ready to cook. (Patty can be assembled up to 2 hours in advance.)

In small bowl, whisk mayonnaise, mustard and pickle brine until smooth.

Cover and refrigerate.

Remove most of soft insides from top of bread to make hollow. Reserve insides.

Prepare grill for indirect medium heat at about 350 F. Brush grill grates with oil. Hold burger on foil bottom and flip onto indirect-heat side of grill; peel off foil. Cook until sides of burger are cooked and it feels firm when lifted with spatula, about 8-10 minutes. Using two spatulas, carefully flip burger. Close grill and cook until burger is cooked through and cheese is melted, about 5-8 minutes longer.

Move to direct-heat side of grill for 1-2 minutes per side for more char.

Brush cut sides of bread with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Grill on directheat side of grill until bread is toasted and grill marks appear, about 3 minutes.

Place bottom half of bread on large cutting board. Spread with half of mustard sauce. Place burger on top and top with tomatoes, onions, pickles and bacon. Spread top of bread with remaining mustard sauce and fill with lettuce. Place top of bun on burger and cut into eight wedges.

Big Soda Giving Big Money to Prohibit Local Grocery Taxes

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – Big soda companies are all-in on a measure that would ban future soda taxes such as the one Seattle passed last year.

Washingtonians will decide in November on Initiative 1634, which would prohibit local governments from imposing any new taxes on grocery items.

Seattle’s tax would be grandfathered in.

Coca-Cola has contributed nearly $3 million supporting the measure, PepisCo has contributed more than $2 million, and the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group has spent nearly $1 million.

Victor Colman, director of the Childhood Obesity Prevention Coalition, compares the beverage companies’ tactics to those he saw while working to reform tobacco and alcohol policy.

“It’s the same dynamic,” Colman points out. “Cities and counties get a little

entrepreneurial in their policy development, see some success, then said corporate interest goes to (the) state capitol and either runs a bill or runs a ballot initiative to curtail the power of the locals.”

The Seattle tax follows in the footsteps of other cities taxing soda by the ounce.

Berkeley, Calif., implemented a soda tax in 2015. A 2017 study found that sales of sugary drinks fell by 10 percent and sales of water increased by 16 percent in the first year of the tax.

Supporters of the Washington measure say taxes on soda and other grocery items are regressive and will predominantly be shouldered by lowincome Washingtonians.

Colman disagrees that soda taxes are regressive and says it’s actually a progressive public health policy.

“If you do it right, you’re going to lower consumption of a risky product and improve community health and you’re

Michigan’s workforce, and immigrant owned businesses account for 12 percent of total business earnings in the state. And Crouse says immigrants are almost twice as likely as U.S.-born residents to become entrepreneurs.

Farouq Karadsheh arrived in the U.S. from Jordan over four decades ago, and operates a grocery store in Grand Rapids. He employs 25 people, offers products from 25 different countries and believes his store is a safe and comfortable space where immigrants can find support and feel at ease.

“We cater to many, many, many communities,” he states.

“They come in and I’ve heard it so many times, they say, ‘Well, I feel like I’m home – so many things you see are just like what we were used to, back home.’ That’s a good feeling.”

Karadsheh says at the time he launched his business, he was unaware of any public resources for small businesses.

He relied on personal savings and bank loans.

Limited access to financing

is among the challenges faced by immigrant entrepreneurs, along with unfamiliarity with American businesses models and discrimination in business networks.

Crouse says policy changes and initiatives like Welcoming Michigan, can help build bridges.

“Welcoming Cities initiatives address the needs of both U.S.-born and immigrant entrepreneurs and help to ease tensions that may come up as immigrants start to grow in local communities,” she points out. “That’s definitely something that’s already out there, Welcoming Michigan is one of them, and so, more cities could adopt this model.”

The report also recommends better access to business planning services for immigrants, outreach materials in languages other than English, and expanding access for drivers’ licenses and state identification so all workers, regardless of citizenship, can actively participate in the economy.

or millions of school-age children in the United States, each day begins – and ends – with a bus ride. While the school bus is the safest way to travel to and from school, according to the National Association of Pupil Transportation (NAPT), it’s important for parents to teach their children how to stay safe in and around the school bus as obstructed views, distracted drivers and more can put kids at risk.

These tips from the experts at NAPT and the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) provide parents with some additional measures to take and lessons to teach to increase safety going to and from the bus, and even during the ride.

Before the Bus Arrives

If kids must cross a street, driveway or alley, remind them to stop and look both ways before crossing. n Verify the bus stop location offers good visibility for the bus driver; if changes are needed, talk with nearby homeowners or school district officials to implement changes. Never let kids wait in a house or car, where the driver may miss seeing them approach the bus. n Remind children that the bus stop is not a playground. Balls or other toys could roll into the street and horseplay can result in someone falling into the path of oncoming traffic. n Instruct children to stay at least three steps away from the road and allow the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching it. n

Ensure backpacks are packed securely so papers and other items don’t scatter as the bus approaches. n Create a morning routine that puts kids at the bus stop five minutes before the scheduled pickup time. This helps avoid a last-minute rush, when safety lessons are easily forgotten, and ensures kids are safely in place for boarding. n Encourage children to wear bright, contrasting colors so they can be seen easier by drivers. n Walk young children to the bus stop or encourage kids to walk in groups. There is safety in numbers; groups are easier for drivers to see.

On the Bus Ride

Many school districts are moving away from diesel buses in favor of buses powered by an alternate fuel, like propane, which offers numerous benefits for school districts and their students.

In fact, school buses powered by propane transport approximately 928,000 students to and from school every day at more than 840 public and private school districts in 48 states, according to a vehicle registration report compiled by PERC using IHS Polk new vehicle registration data.

“There’s a lot to like about propane school buses for community stakeholders and school officials, and school districts across the nation continue to take notice,” said Michael Taylor, PERC director of autogas business development. “Compared to other fuels, propane school buses are quieter and offer reduced emissions. Plus, they cost less for the district to operate, so schools can put more money back into the classroom where it helps students most.”

When boarding the bus, items can get bumped and dropped. Caution children that before picking anything up, they should talk to the driver and follow instructions to safely retrieve their possessions. n Teach safe riding habits: stay seated with head, hands and feet inside at all times; keep bags and books out of the aisle and remain seated until the bus stops moving. n Instruct children to never throw things on the bus or out the windows and to never play with or block emergency exits. n

Among the numerous safety advantages propane school buses provide, engines powered by propane are noticeably quieter than diesel engines, which can help ensure a safe ride. Plus, just like all buses, propane buses are crash tested to ensure they meet U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for side and rear impact. In addition, an automatic shut-off valve prevents the flow of fuel to the engine when it’s not running, even if the ignition is turned on.

Cleanliness

The World Health Organization and the Environmental Protection Agency have identified diesel engine exhaust as a carcinogen, which can cause short- and long-term health effects. With the emergence of alternative fuels like propane, which provides a clean emissions profile compared with diesel and gasoline buses, there is decreased risk of exposing young passengers to harmful particulate matter that can be found

Remind kids that just like when riding in a car, loud noises are off limits so they don’t distract the driver. That includes cellphones and other electronic devices; instruct children to put them on mute or use headphones.

Leaving the Bus

Remind children to look before stepping off the bus. If they must cross the street, teach them to do so in front of the bus by taking five big steps (approximately 10 feet) away from the front of the bus, looking up and waiting for the driver to signal that it is safe. n For parents who meet their kids at the bus, remember that in their excitement kids may dart across the street. Eliminate the risk by waiting on the side of the street where kids exit the bus. n Make the bus ride part of your daily “how was school?” discussion. Encourage kids to talk about the things they see and hear on the bus so you can discuss appropriate behaviors and, if necessary, report any concerns to school administrators. As bullying is prevalent and buses are no exception, ask your child to tell you about any bullying they observe, whether against another child or themselves, and talk about how to shut down bully behaviors. n

Don’t Miss ‘Waitress’ at the Pantages. It’s Delicious!

Photo by Joan Marcus When I entered the Pantages Theatre to see “Waitress,” I knew I was in for a tasty treat as soon as I saw the colorful onstage curtain that looked just like a giant cherry pie covered with a crisscrossed crust.

The musical begins in Joe’s Diner. The three waitresses on staff are all there, Jenna (Desi Oakland), Becky (Charity Angel Dawson) and Dawn (Lenne Klingaman) as well as the grumpy cook, Cal (Ryan C. Dunkin). He is always yelling at Becky who still has a snappy comeback response. Will she get fired?

At the same time Jenna, who bakes all the beautiful pies every day, is taking Joe’s order

at his usual table. The grouchy old man (Larry Marshall) owns the Diner, and it’s apparent that he loves each and every pie Jenna bakes. He also enjoys her company and often gives her words of fatherly advice.

This time he urges her to enter a baking contest, telling her he’s sure she would win the grand prize of $25,000. He believes in her amazing piebaking skills which she learned from her mother long ago.

Suddenly Jenna runs off to the bathroom, followed by the other two waitresses. They want her to take a pregnancy test which they happen to have.

She does and is horrified by the results--she’s pregnant.

Now how can she get away

from her surly, unpleasant husband Earl (Nick Bailey)?

While Jenna’s life looks bleak at this point, things look up when she visits the ob/ gyn clinic and is seen by Dr. Pomatter (Bryan Fenkart) a new doctor there. He is endearingly awkward, but he does confirm she is definitely with child.

As she leaves she gives him a luscious looking pie, she’s made. He tells her he doesn’t eat sweets because sugar isn’t right for you. However, as soon as she leaves, he takes a bite of the pie. Then he can’t stop--he’s in love with her pie. Fast they are in love with each other, even though they are both married.

Meanwhile, at the diner, romance may turn out better for Dawn. She has met a guy online, but she told him she’d only stay for five minutes on their date. Next day she tells the girls she won’t ever see him again. No such luck.

At this point, Ogie (Jeremy Morse), her short-term suitor, is sitting at her table and won’t let anyone else wait on him.

Morse, the unmovable suitor, is hilarious as he tells the unimpressed Dawn they are made for each other--because what other couples could share a mutual love for Revolutionary War reenactments. His physical schtick throughout had the opening night audience in stitches as he continues to woo her by singing “Never Ever Getting Rid of Me.” When he finally leaves the audience showed their approval with

thunderous applause. I secretly wished he would come back and do it all over again.

Comedy, song, and dance throughout make this show a joy to see, but like life, it is also tinged with some loss and difficult decision making.

In the final scene, we meet Jenna’s young daughter Lulu played by adorable identical twins Catherine and Elizabeth Last. (I especially enjoyed that since I have identical twin sisters.)

“Waitress,” a Broadway smash hit, was adapted from the late Adrienne Shelly’s 2007 film of the same name.

Shelly not only wrote the script, but she also directed and acted in the movie.

Sadly Shelly was murdered in New York before her first feature film was premiered.

“Waitress” is also the first Broadway musical with an all-female creative team-book by Jessie Nelson, score by Sara Bareilles and directed by Diane Paulus.

A Conversation With Actor/Writer Sydney Weisman

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) Coachella Valley music producer Les Michaels is known for presenting new and favorite Cabaret musical artists through his popular “Sundays In Summer Series”, performed in the Arthur Newman Theater, at the Joslyn Center in Palm Desert.

Michaels is smack dab in the middle of his 9th season of producing cabaret concerts featuring singers and song stylists from Los Angeles, Chicago, as well as musical artists who now reside in the Coachella Valley.

Last Sunday, August 5th, I got an opportunity to catch Sydney Weisman in her new show “Who Put the Chutzpah

in Broadway?” It’s a loving tribute to the men and women of Broadway who compose the music and write the lyrics that make the young girls cry, the middle aged reach back into their memories, while the gray-headed crowd’s eyes tearup remembering and asking themselves where have all the flowers and their lives gone?

It’s a wonderful musical journey well worth listening to songs written by the Royalty of Broadway: The Gershwin Brothers, George and Ira, Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, Irving Berlin, Dorothy Fields, Frank Loesser, Kurt Weill, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and a host of other iconic musical giants of Broadway’s music.

Sydney, aka, ‘Little

Miss Broadway’ selected the musical numbers that comprise her show, along with musical director and legendary piano accompanist Barney McClure. Together they weave a nostalgic musical tapestry of songs that have endured for years. Sprinkled with specialty numbers, some of which were strangers to me, but highly entertaining to the packed audience at the Arthur Newman theater, once again demonstrates the staying power and relevance of great artists and their work even after 90 years.

Ms. Weisman is a song stylist who also delivers insider stories about the songs she shares with her audience. She’s petite, has a warm and winning smile that immediately engages her

audience and where we find ourselves eagerly waiting to hear her sing her next song and share another anecdote.

The show titled “Who Put the Chutzpah in Broadway?” is a ‘love valentine’ to the talent and creativity of Jewish writers and composers of the 20th century, who literally changed the face of the American Broadway musical with their innovative and enduring music and lyrics.

I had the opportunity to chat with Ms. Weisman following her performance.

When I asked her what is your favorite song in the show?, she leaned back in her chair, and really thought about it.

“It’s difficult, because I really like every one of them”. I waited … “but I have to admit my heart favors the music of the Gershwin Brothers, George and Ira.” Then leaning forward, says with conviction and passion, “Just listen to the first nine words of their ‘Our Love is here to Stay’ song that I sang this afternoon. ‘It’s very clear’, just sums it all up for me. Love is eternal.”

I think it’s safe to say that love is the most powerful emotion on the planet; hands down. It’s the favorite emotion of all creative artists.

Pressing Ms. Weisman further, I asked what about some of the other songs, like “The Christmas Song” that is replete with humorous, gentle, funpoking lyrics concerning the commercialization of the

Christmas Holiday Season.

Smiling she says “Well, we all need some humor in our lives, just to get through life’s “rough times” came the answer.

Words to live by indeed.

Her program featured fourteen musical numbers some iconic and some that have disappeared from the radar screens of the American Song Book performers – but non-the-less are worthy of listening once again.

A couple of my favorites from her show were a heart tugging, haunting, rendition of Kurt Weill’s “Lost in the Stars”; Melissa Manchester’s emotionally-redemptive song “Come in from the Rain”; and the clever up beat tune and lyrics of “Everybody Wants to be Sondheim”, written by Alan Chapman, LA-based radio Host of KUSC Classical radio, who also doubles and triples as a Ph.D educator, producer, and pianist; brought the Joslyn theater audience house down.

P.S. I finally coerced her favorite number of the afternoon’s performance.

It was her take on Frank Loesser’s “If I Were a Bell”, from “Guys and Dolls”. It was a fun-filled afternoon of memorable songs.

Top 5 most-profitable investments in luxury goods

By Desert Star Staff Since the beginning of time, people have been looking for the easiest ways to accumulate wealth. They say that there are only two ways to make money: by working or by having your assets work for you.

When it comes to the second option, people with deep pockets have a wide variety of choices, from investing in energy or precious metals to buying real estate and big company’s shares.

But what if you already have? It’s high time to start investing in luxury goods.

Analysts at the Knight Frank property consultancy, tracking the performance of a theoretical basket of selected collectable asset classes, have revealed the list of the most lucrative investments into luxury goods in view of 2017 results. #1 Fine art: Last year, works of art went up in price more than any other luxury item, according to the Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index (KFLII). The average price for art masterpieces has grown by 21 percent. The consultancy noted that this asset had lagged behind classic vehicles and wine over the previous several years.

a painting by the Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci set a world record for an auctioned work of art. The painting, called ‘Salvator Mundi,’ or ‘Savior of the World,’ sold for $450 million.

The figure more than doubled the previous record, set in 2015, when ‘Women of Algiers’ by Pablo Picasso was purchased at a final price of $179.3 million. #2 Wines: Fine wines were ranked the world’s number two luxury asset, which had managed to become the leader of the list in 2016. The prices for wine increased by 11 percent in 2017 compared to 24-percent growth in the previous year.

According to Andrew Gordon, managing director at the wine distributor Private Cellar, growth in demand for wines was mostly boosted by increasing interest from Asian buyers. #3 Watches: Number three in the 2017 ranking was wristwatches, which went up in price by five percent. This luxury accessory reportedly took a 69-percent jump over the past 10 years. The ‘Paul Newman’ Rolex Daytona became a record-breaker in this group of luxury goods. In October, the watch was sold for $17.8 million. On the back of the wristwatch “Drive Carefully Me,”

Prices for Chinese ceramics dropped five percent last year and three percent over the decade, while fancy furniture proved to be a poor investment, with a 32-percent decline in price over the last ten years. In 2017, prices for posh furniture decreased by one percent. It has been compared to the “Blue Whale challenge” that led to reports of suicides in Russia and the U.S., including a teenager in San Antonio.

Police in Argentina are investigating whether “Momo” is connected to the suicide of a 12-year-old girl, according to the Buenos Aires Times.

The Computer Crime Investigation Unit in Mexico says the game started on Facebook where members

were “challenged” to communicate with an unknown number.

The first incident occurred on Friday at approximately 3:45 p.m., when agents apprehended a group of eight individuals after they illegally entered the United States, east of Calexico.

During processing, record checks revealed that one of the individuals, Banales-Alvarado, Rodrigo, a 35-year-old Mexican citizen, has a previous conviction for a sex offense out of Huntsville, Texas in 2014.

Banales was convicted of first-degree felony aggravated assault of a child and was subsequently sentenced to five years confinement.

The second incident occurred shortly after, when agents arrested a man after he illegally entered the country.

At the station, record checks revealed, Rosales-Leon, Omar, a 29-year-old Mexican citizen, has a felony warrant for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and vehicle theft out of Imperial County.

“These potentially dangerous men will not be free to cause further havoc on the public thanks to the United States Border Patrol and their fine work,” said El Centro Sector Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David S. Texas to Challenge DACA in Federal Court

By Desert Star Staff HOUSTON – Texas “Dreamers,” young people brought into the U.S. when they were small children, are bracing for the next legal hurdle facing the Deferred Act for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA. On Wednesday, a federal court in Houston will hear arguments by Texas and six other states seeking an injunctionto end the program.

Marielena Hincapié, the executive director of the National Immigration Law Center says so far federal courts have sided with Dreamers since the Trump administration moved to end DACA last year.

“After losing in court after court and failing to get what they want through the proper channels, the Trump administration, Texas, and a dwindling handful of states are attempting an end-run in the courts to shut down DACA www.desertstarweekly.com

applications,” she explains.

Last week, a D.C. federal court ruled that the Trump administration must resume DACA, and called the decision to end the program “arbitrary and capricious.”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed for an injunction in May to end DACA, and argues the program is unconstitutional because the Obama administration’s executive order changed federal law without congressional approval.

Donald Verrilli, a former U.S. Solicitor General under President Barack Obama, says since the states involved in Wednesday’s hearing waited six years after DACA’s implementation to file for an injunction, they could have a hard time making the case they’re subject to immediate and irreparable injury.

“It’s very hard to see that as anything other than a misuse of the judicial process

West Nile Virus In Thermal; St. Louis Encephalitis In Mecca

Mosquito-borne virus activity intensifies in the East Valley, truck-mounted control planned in Mecca.

By Desert Star Staff INDIO, CA, The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District detected West Nile virus (WNV) activity for the first time in Thermal in 2018 and continued activity of St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) in Mecca. Mosquitoes trapped in downtown Mecca tested positive for SLEV, the first mosquito-borne virus activity detected in an East Valley residential community this year.

In Mecca, mosquitoes collected from a trap near Lincoln Street and 65th Avenue and from a trap near Colfax Street and 72nd Avenue tested positive for SLEV. The mosquitoes that tested positive for WNV came from a trap in Thermal near Pierce Street and Avenue 70.

This brings the number of WNV-positive mosquito samples to 11 and the number of SLEV- positive mosquito samples to 11 for 2018. Last year at this time the District had detected 69 WNV-positive mosquito samples and no SLEV-positive mosquito samples. All mosquitoes were tested at the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District laboratory.

“With the oppressive temperatures we are experiencing, it is likely that people will be outdoors in the early morning or evening, enjoying a little respite from the heat,” said Jill Oviatt, Public Information Manager at the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District. “This is exactly when virus-carrying mosquitoes are looking to bite a warm-blooded animal, like us.

We ask everyone to take proper precautions and cover up or wear repellent to reduce the risk of getting bitten by an infected mosquito and developing a potentially serious disease.”

In an effort to reduce the number of mosquitoes, interrupt virus transmission, and protect the public from mosquito-borne diseases, District staff will conduct truck-mounted adult mosquito control applications in downtown Mecca where the virus activity was detected.

by Johnson Street, 66th Avenue, Lincoln Street, and 62nd Avenue, and exclude organic farms. Applications are scheduled Saturday through Monday, July 28- 30, between

In addition, District staff will post disease notification signs in communities located near the trap locations and intensify mosquito surveillance with an increase in traps and inspections for mosquito breeding sites. – The AARP Foundation is recruiting volunteers now for its highly successful and popular Tax-Aide program, which offers free tax-preparation services each spring.

The program, now in its fifty-first year, has helped more than 68 million people file their taxes since its inception.

In 2018 alone, people who used the service got $1.3 billion in income-tax refunds and more than $213 million in Earned Income Tax Credits.

Hector Chao, a longtime Tax-Aide volunteer, says

“We take a course and then if we pass the test, then we are assigned to do the work,” says.

“So it’s challenging and, besides, it allows us to help somebody else.”

Last year, almost 3,000 volunteers helped more than 178,000 Californians file their state and federal tax returns.

There are 381 Tax-Aide sites in California, including many at senior centers and libraries.

Chao says he’s

been volunteering since 2004 and encourages others to get involved.

“Normally, this takes place only during the tax season, which is February through April,” he explains.

“However, during the year there is a continuing program for people who have to have amendments made to their tax returns.”

Nationwide, the TaxAide program is offered at nearly 5,000 sites, where more than 35,000 volunteers serve more than 2.5 million taxpayers each year.

By Desert Star Staff DENVER – More Latinos need to graduate from high school and college in order to have a fighting chance of earning a middle-class income, according to a new Georgetown University report.

Currently, nearly 20 percent of Latinos who enrolled in a Colorado public college earn a bachelor’s degree, compared with nearly 40 percent of Whites.

Tanya Garcia, the report’s co-author, says Latinos are the fastest-growing ethnic

group in the U.S., and most in Colorado have a high school education or less.

“If current trends continue, there are not going to be enough jobs for anyone with just a high school degree or less in the near future,” she warns. “So in order for Colorado’s economy to keep thriving, more Latinos need to go to college.”

The study also found that more than 40 percent of Latino high school graduates immediately enroll in college, compared with 63 percent

of whites. Garcia says this education attainment gap has a significant impact on earning potential.

Twenty percent of whites end up landing jobs that pay $35,000 a year or more, compared with just 15 percent of Latinos.

The overall gap between whites and Latinos who graduate from college is roughly 20 percentage points.

But when Latinos and whites have similar test scores and enroll in similar colleges, that drops to just 7 points. One of

Prevent mosquito bites: • Avoid going outside in the hours around dawn and dusk when mosquitoes that can transmit West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis viruses are most active.

• Wear EPA registered ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535

to exposed skin and/ or clothing (as directed on the product label).

• Wear long sleeve shirts, long pants, socks, and shoes when mosquitoes are active.

• Maintain window and door screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home. Prevent mosquitoes around your home: • Inspect yards for standing water sources and drain water that may have collected under potted plants, in bird baths, discarded tires, and any other items that could collect water.

• Check your rain gutters and lawn drains to make sure they aren’t holding water and debris.

“And the main reason for this is that these schools spend more money per student,” she says. “And those investments have led to better results, not just for Latino and white students but for all the students attending those colleges.”

recommends shifting the state’s focus from moving kids with passing grades from K-12 to a more comprehensive and systematic effort to transition youth from dependency to adult independence.

By Desert Star Staff From Adelanto to Zzyzx, Californians have been protected for years, thanks to 2011 legislation that brought carbon monoxide (CO) protection to the forefront of home safety.

In 2011, the California Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Protection Act (Senate Bill 183) went into effect, requiring CO alarms in newly constructed single- and two-family homes, as well as all existing singlefamily homes. Since then, the law has been expanded to cover all multi-family dwellings.

As a result, CO alarms have helped save countless lives, and a majority of states have followed suit with similar legislation and code adoption.

However, alarms don’t last forever, and seven years after this groundbreaking legislation, First Alert, the most trusted brand in home safety*, along with health and safety officials, have issued a timely reminder to the public: the need to replace CO alarms as they approach expiration.

As part of its ongoing education efforts, First Alert is partnering with fire departments and safety organizations throughout the country to bring awareness to the importance of replacing alarms as they expire.

“The California Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act marked a turning point for protection for California residents, but with busy lives and other priorities, it’s easy to take life-saving measures like installing CO alarms for granted once they’ve been implemented,” said Tarsila Wey, director of marketing for First Alert, a leader in residential fire and CO detection devices.

“The anniversary of this act is a timely reminder of the importance of protecting what matters most, and an ideal opportunity for us to celebrate the lives that have been saved over the past seven years by making safety a top priority.”

without a sensing device.

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, CO poisoning is a leading cause of accidental poisoning in the United States and is responsible for an average of 450 deaths each year. Any fuel-burning appliance, including heaters, fireplaces, furnaces, appliances and cooking sources using coal, wood, or petroleum products, are all potential sources of CO. It’s critical to have appliances inspected by certified licensed technicians, educate loved ones on the dangers of carbon monoxide, and develop a family escape plan in the event of a CO emergency.

CO poisoning can cause symptoms such as nausea, headaches, dizziness, chest pain and vomiting that mimic those of many other illnesses, making it difficult to diagnose. In severe poisoning cases, victims can experience disorientation, unconsciousness, long-term neurological disabilities, cardiorespiratory failure or death.

While alarm lifespans may vary by model and manufacturer, back in 2011, a properly maintained CO alarm had a lifespan of approximately five to seven years. Therefore, CO alarms installed when California’s CO law came into effect are likely now due for replacement. As an extra safety measure, most First Alert CO alarms feature endof-life warning to alert residents to the need for replacement.

The end-of-life signal differs significantly from the 85-decibel horn heard in an emergency or during regular testing of the alarm. It also differs from the low-battery chirp, and usually consists of 3-5 short sounds.

Check the back of the alarm, as well as the alarm’s user manual, for specific information on these different signals.

“If you can’t think of the last time you installed a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm, chances are, it’s time to replace your old ones,” Wey said.

“Installing new alarms, testing them regularly and having and

The last few years have seen significant advancements in technology, extending the lifespans of some to CO alarms to 10 years. In addition to replacing CO alarms as they reach expiration, Wey recommends the following tips and tools for keeping yourself and loved ones safer from the dangers of carbon monoxide: Important Safety Steps • Install alarms. CO alarms are the only way to detect this poisonous

gas. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends installing alarms on every level of the home and near each sleeping area for maximum protection. Also make sure the alarms are installed at least 15 feet away from sources of CO to reduce the possibility of nuisance alarms. It is also important to test alarm monthly and change batteries every six months, unless the alarm is powered by a sealed, 10-year battery.

• Test alarms regularly.

• Never use generators indoors. In the case of a power outage, portable electric generators must be used outside only (at least 15 feet from your home). Never use them inside the home, in a garage or in any confined area that can allow CO to collect.

And, be careful to follow operating instructions closely.

Also, refrain from using charcoal grills, camp stoves and other similar devices indoors.

• Be mindful of the garage. Never leave a vehicle running inside an attached garage, even if the door is open, it is hazardous, as CO can leak into the home.

• Have fuel-burning appliances inspected regularly. Arrange for a professional inspection of all fuel-burning appliances (such as furnaces, stoves, fireplaces, clothes dryers, water heaters and space heaters) annually.

• Plan Your Escape –To develop an effective escape plan, walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Identify two ways out of each room, including windows and doors.

Practice your home emergency escape plan at least twice a year and make sure to plan a meeting spot. That way, if there is an emergency, everyone knows where to meet.

• Call 911. If an alarm sounds, leave the home immediately and move to fresh air. Then call 911 and do not go back into the home until the home is inspected and cleared.

Neil Simon Comedy Barefoot In The Park

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) Whenever the subject of comedy comes up in polite company it’s almost impossible not to include the name and career of America’s unchallenged King of comedy playwright Neil Simon.

Simon is one of the world’s most successful and prolific playwrights. His stage play canon is huge, diverse, and wide-ranging when it came to subjects, characters, and stories. But he is best known for his comedy genius when it comes to the plight we humans find ourselves in during the short time we spend on this planet.

The author of some 60 plays, screenplays, and three novels over the years, Simon, at 91-years of age, still takes pen to paper (probably a yellowlined legal pad). But his last playwriting effort for the stage was in 2001 with “45 seconds From Broadway”. True theatre patrons and supporters of the American theatre will forgive the great man’s last effort: “Rose’s Dilemma”, which ran just 29 performance in 2003. It wasn’t a bad play, it just didn’t connect with the audience or critics. Some say it was due to the culture and changing times. Perhaps, but how then does one account for the ongoing appeal of Shakespeare and the classics plays of the last century still being produced for the 21st century American theatrical going public? As the King of Siam might say “Is a puzzlement.”

Simon’s plays have always been relevant, and always will be. More theatre companies merely need to produce his plays which address the problems of how to navigate the choppy waters of getting along with one another. Simon offers the palliative of humor to ease the rough edges of dashed hope and dreams that slip through our fingers.

Without humor and comedy; life would be unbearable.

There’s humor everywhere just hiding in plain sight. Playwright Simon just helps us find it in his plays. But I digress.

San Diego’s renowned Old Globe Theatre is currently staging one of Simons’ earlier, highly successful and blisteringly funny romantic comedy plays “Barefoot in the Park”; seamlessly and smartly directed by Jessica Stone. As the young couple contend with: a lack of heat, a skylight that leaks snow, several breathchallenging flights of stairs, an oddball Hungarian neighbor Victor Velasco (played with flair and elan by Jere Burns), and Corrie’s well-meaning mother Ethel Banks (nicely played by Mia Dillon) who lives in New Jersey, and an empathetic NYC telephone installer and repairman portrayed by Jake Millgard (in a little gem of a performance),along with the two newlyweds who must now reconcile their own personal differences in how they approach life’s challenges.

Adjusting to married life isn’t so easy. Who knew marriage could be so complicated and yet so funny and entertaining at the same time?

As always with the plays of Simon the situations and the dialogue is scintillating and replete what has now become known as “zingers”; a Simon trademark. The folly and the pathos on the part of Simon’s characters and their plight is what engages and connects the audience. Everyone can relate to the character’s antics as well as their own past experiences, say, in giving in to a request to dine at a place one normally wouldn’t.

For example, when Paul, Corrie, Ethel, Corrie’s mother, as the guests of neighbor Victor Velasco, with all four dining at an Albanian restaurant on Staten Island consuming menu items recommended by Victor that are so esoteric that when consumed, they prompt Paul to comment “it’s not easy to dig into a black salad”, or enjoy “a sheep dip soup”, followed by numerous glasses of the Greek liquor Ouzu; which according to the characters in the play make ‘their teeth feel soft’. No one writes hilarious visual-like dialogue like Neil Simon.

However, no more spoiler alerts from me. You must see for yourself this fresh, breezy, production to fully appreciate the great comedy writing of Neil Simon, and the wondrous technical magic that the Old Globe creative team contributes in the apartment setting, along with five pitch perfect performances by this outstanding cast.

If I were to be picky about performances in this easy-to-like production, it would come in the form of a question: Why do young, but seasoned performers, think all young female characters – or their directors - feel the need for them to act like prancing, young fillies, to express youth when walking into a room?

One should observe how real young people (18 to 22 yearsold) act and move whether they’re living in 1963 or 2018.

The technical credits are always first rate, state of the art, in all the venues of the Old

Led by director Stone, Scenic Designer Tobin Ost, renders a functional set with some visual surprises for the audience. Lighting Designer Amanda Zieve provides the proper amount of light to see the Costume designs of David Israel Reynoso, and Sound Designer Lindsay Jones, completes the creative team.

Director Stone, however, does indeed, mount a clever,

fast moving, wonderfully-paced comedy, that was originally written for a proscenium theatre, which she neatly transforms to fit into the inthe-round acting space of the Sheryl and Harvey White stage.

It’s a splendid production.

I am constantly amazed by Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein’s unerring play selections every season. He has the pulse of his patrons constantly on his personal

radar screen as well as those of current events, and the needs of his actors and creative artists to stretch and grow. There is a backlog of artists waiting in line to become part of the Old Globe experience. How fortunate for San Diego audiences.
