Back to School Tips By Desert Star Staff There’s nothing like a major milestone in a child’s life to test a parent’s confidence. Big changes like a new school or classroom can be trying for kids and adults alike, but tackling the transition a little at a time can

make it easier on everyone. Most parents agree that being confident is important, but only about 1 in 3 parents feels confident on a typical day, according to KinderCare’s Parent Confidence Report. However, experts say your own feelings

By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A pilot project called “Fighter League” is arming women of color with the tools they need to fight climate change. Two national groups, the Movement Strategy Center and the Solutions Project, founded by celebrities such as Mark Ruffalo, are making a concerted effort to fund and support women such as Mary Gutierrez. She is the co-founder of Another Gulf is Possible, a collaborative that uses a variety of strategies to fight for environmental justice in underserved communities.

Gutierrez is among six women who will each receive $10,000 to participate in climate leadership development training to help boost their efforts in the Gulf South. “It’s certainly grateful to be receiving funding, because it’s not often that we women of color that are doing this type of work receive any sort of funding,” Gutierrez said. Studies show areas in the U.S. that will be hit hardest by climate change are those along the Gulf

can impact youngsters. Whether your child is making a big change like stepping up from pre-K into kindergarten or entering a new grade in the same building, there’s likely to be some trepidation. However, each child is different, which means

reactions to change can vary. Some kids show up ready and raring to go, eager to explore and meet new friends, while others can be a little clingy, tearful or even refuse to look at the teacher or take a step through the door. If you think your child

might have trouble making the transition, consider these strategies from the experts at KinderCare to help ease both of you into a more comfortable place and build confidence for a successful school year. Continues on Page 3

Amnesty issues US travel warning, pushes for gun control after shootings By Desert Star Staff Amnesty International has dived headlong into the US gun control debate, urging travelers to be cautious amid a “human rights crisis” they blame on “ubiquity of firearms” and government reluctance to confiscate them. Visitors to the US “cannot reasonably expect to be free from harm,” Amnesty International USA’s Ernest Coverson said in a statement on Wednesday, advising people that “the country does not adequately protect people’s right to be safe.” A guarantee of not being shot is impossible. The group specifically warned racial, ethnic, and sexual minorities to be on their toes due to “recent attacks linked to white supremacist ideology.” Though only one of the weekend’s mass shootings was ‘linked’ to white supremacy through his manifesto, and the other shooter’s allegedly far-left leanings were not mentioned anywhere in Amnesty’s alarming message. Those travelers who

brave the gun-fetishists the group claims are terrorizing the American streets were advised to “be extra vigilant at all times and be wary of the ubiquity of firearms among the population.” They were also warned to keep away from “places where large numbers of people gather” – i.e., all tourist attractions – as well as bars, nightclubs, and casinos. Accusing the US of “prioritizing gun ownership over basic human rights,” the group shamed the US government for “ignoring its international obligations to protect people’s rights and safety.” A curious argument to make given that the US is not exactly famous for honoring international agreements and respecting obligations. The ‘unprecedented’ travel warning was accompanied by a familiar list of “commonsense reforms.” including strict background checks, a national firearm registry, and a ban on high capacity magazines and assault weapons, plus a plea to pass gun control legislation – some of which already exists

at the state level – federally. Many on social media resented Amnesty’s decision to frame the US’ “rampant gun violence” as a “human rights crisis,” wading into what they saw as a domestic issue. Some highlighted a dramatic decline in violent crime rates over the past 20 years, while others pointed out that “we have laws against murder. How effective has that been?” Still, others reminded Amnesty that the US was responsible for much worse human rights crises than a few mass shootings and wondered “when do international entities step in to force the US to stop its cruel, inhumane practices? when do other nations sanction us?” Amnesty’s statement comes on the heels of similar warnings from the foreign ministries of Uruguay and Venezuela and the Japanese Consul in Detroit, all of which issued traveler alerts following two deadly mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio over the weekend that killed a total of 31 people.

Four killed, two injured in ‘random’ California stabbing spree By Desert Star Staff At least four people have been stabbed to death and two others seriously injured after a 33yo man went on a robbing spree in Garden Grove, a city of 175,000 residents in Orange County, California. The murderous chain of events started on Wednesday afternoon when the suspect attempted to rob a bakery on Chapman Avenue. The assailant then drove to an apartment complex nearby, where two more people were attacked and murdered. Later, more robberies were reported in the vicinity, leaving two people dead. The 33-year-old suspect,

whose name was not released, was finally arrested in the evening outside of a 7-Eleven convenience store with a knife and a handgun. He is being questioned by the authorities, as the motive of the attacks remains unclear. In total, law enforcement is investigating at least eight crime scenes in the area. These are all random acts of violence,” Garden Grove Lt. Carl Whitney told the journalists. “Our suspect was not associated with any of our victims.” The incident comes in the wake of a series of deadly shootings which reignited a fierce gun control debate in

the US. The stabbing spree, with dozens immediately noting however, strengthened the that banning firearms, knives, argument of the pro-gun crowd, vehicles and everything else

remotely dangerous would not solve the underlying crime and violence problems.

Protesters in CA, US Stand Against White Supremacy By Desert Star Staff PASADENA, Calif. – Thousands of Californians joined protests across the state to take a stand against white supremacy after the mass shooting in El Paso. Last weekend, a gunman killed 22 people at a Walmart store in that border city, shortly after posting a racist, anti-Latino essay online. More than 50 communities nationwide held vigils Wednesday night, including eight in the Golden State – in Claremont, Oakland, Pasadena, Pomona, Riverside, San Francisco, Santa Barbara and Sierra Madre. Salvador Sarmiento,

campaign director for the National Day Laborers Organizing Network, says the massacre won’t keep the immigrant community quiet. “It’s really a first step in a call to action to really expose that hateful world view,” he states. “Part of the challenge is not letting that hateful worldview create the fear that it wants to create in our hearts.” The day of action was dubbed El Paso Firme, meaning El Paso Strong. In his online posting, the gunman in that incident referenced a white nationalist theory known as “the great replacement.” It bemoans the changing demographics that

will end the white majority in the U.S. in the coming decades. President Donald Trump spoke of unity on Wednesday as he visited El Paso and Dayton, Ohio, the site of a second mass killing. The demonstrators want to see gun control measures, including universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons, coupled with a commitment by political leaders to fight domestic terrorism. They also criticized Trump for referring to asylum seekers as an invasion. “It was foreseeable that the hate-filled speeches, the hate-filled rallies, you know – mixed with uncontrolled August 9, 2019

access to weapons of war – this kind of violence, sadly, is predictable,” Sarmiento says. The events were organized by a coalition that includes the Border Network for Human Rights, the Refugee and Immigrant Center

for Education and Legal Services, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, the Reform Immigration for Texas Alliance, Repairers of the Breach, and the Poor People’s Campaign.

Cities Pass Resolutions in Support of Natural and Renewable Gas

Businesses and County Leadership oppose state-mandated all-electric homes & businesses, citing expense to everyday Californians By Desert Star Staff RIVERSIDE, Calif.– The Inland Empire Economic Partnership and Californians for Balanced Energy Solutions, today joined representatives from more than twenty cities to advocate for more inclusive and balanced energy policies in California. Over twenty cities in the Inland Empire recently passed resolutions supporting inclusive energy policies, in response to state agencies’ moves to eliminate the use of natural gas in the state. preserve consumer choice. About 90 percent of homes in Central and Southern California use natural gas for home space and water heating or cooking, and studies show that consumers favor natural gas for those uses because it is more affordable than electricity. Many consumers are unaware that the California Energy Commission and California Public Utilities Commission are considering new regulations that aim to eliminate natural gas use in new and existing homes in favor electric-only energy. “Riverside County needs effective and affordable energy policies that address air quality, reliability affordability,” said Kevin Jeffries, Riverside County Supervisor 1st District. “An inclusive approach that uses clean, safe, and affordable energy is critical. That does not exclude the use of natural gas in homes and businesses, which our residents prefer.” “The cost of switching gas appliances to electric-only in addition to an increase in energy costs would unfairly impact our low-income communities,” said Andy

Melendrez, Riverside Mayor Pro Tem. “More than 65 percent of the working population within the Inland Empire commutes to Los Angeles and Orange County daily due to our lower housing costs. This would force more of our population to move further away from their jobs increasing traffic, air-emissions and pollution.” “We need a balanced and inclusive approach to achieve California’s clean energy goals. A single solution is not realistic and puts many Inland Empire businesses and homeowners in jeopardy,” said Dr. Matt Rahn, Temecula City Councilman and Chairman of the Board, Californians for Balanced Energy Solutions. “Forcing hardworking businesspeople and homeowners to switch their operations and appliances to all-electric is costly and unfair. We need to pursue other cost-effective alternatives, including renewable natural gas.” “Inland Empire residents choose to live here for many reasons, but notably because the costs of living is lower. 1. Set up classroom visits before school starts. Sometimes fear comes from the unknown. By visiting ahead of time and seeing firsthand, your child can become familiar with the layout of the classroom, meet the teachers and know what to expect, which can help alleviate some of the anxiety and jitters. 2. Talk with your child’s teacher about the transition. Your child’s teacher should be your partner, so be open and honest from the start. Talk about how your child handles change, what causes stress or what behaviors the teacher might expect. Don’t be afraid to call and ask for updates on your child to see how things are going. Set up regular check-ins over the next few weeks to talk about any additional support your child may need. 3. Avoid sneaking away from your child at drop-off. Talk about what will happen ahead of time and create a consistent and predictable drop-off ritual, such as two high-fives, a hug and a wave from the window, to ensure your child feels secure and safe. Continue this routine every day to help your child get used to the classroom environment and make

sure the process is a quick, happy one. While you’re typically welcome in most classrooms, lingering too long can make it harder on your child once you do leave. 4. Be enthusiastic. Just like laughter, excitement is contagious. Rather than focus on nerves or uncertainty, share your own memories from school including how you felt at the beginning of a new school year and the excitement of learning

force all homes and buildings to use electricity only and eliminate natural gas, which so many of our residents and businesses use daily, could significantly increase the cost of living for our communities. Knowing costs are a concern, and most consumers prefer natural gas, I hope state regulators will reconsider,” said Paul Granillo, CEO of the Inland Empire Economic Partnership and Vice Chair, Californians for Balanced Energy Solutions. “Achieving California’s ambitious climate goals will require business leaders, nongovernmental organizations, and policymakers to work together to re-imagine how California’s energy infrastructure can operate as one, integrated system that maximizes emissions reductions and minimizes waste,” said Sharon Tomkins, SoCalGas vice president for strategy and engagement. “Implementing a balanced approach that promotes advanced energy technologies will allow California to keep energy affordable and reliable and preserve consumer choice.”

County and business officials noted that renewable natural gas is a more affordable and less disruptive alternative that would meet California’s climate goals. By replacing just 20 percent of California’s natural gas supply with renewable natural gas (RNG) produced from emissions at landfills, wastewater, farms, and treatment plants, the state would reduce emissions equal to converting 100 percent of buildings to run on more expensive electriconly energy by 2030. Using RNG to reduce emissions in buildings is also up to three times less expensive than an all-electric solution, and it allows families to keep enjoying natural gas cooktops, fireplaces, and their other gas appliances, all while helping California meet its ambitious environmental goals. SoCalGas recently committed to replacing 20 percent of its traditional natural gas supply with renewable natural gas (RNG) by 2030.

and meeting new friends, which can help your child get hyped up, too. 5. Set up a work station at home. Creating a designated space at home for your little learner to do homework, read, write, draw and complete art projects can help set him or her up to develop good study habits. Stock this station with colored paper, crayons and markers, pencils, glue sticks, scissors, books, stickers

and other necessary tools, and leave room for stowing a backpack. Encourage your child to spend time working on educational endeavors in the space each night. Be a Hero this Halloween

By Desert Star Staff Being a hero goes beyond dressing up in a costume this Halloween season. Children, families and schools across the country can channel their own superpowers to help deliver lifesaving supplies to children in need this October. One way to use your superpowers is to Trickor-Treat for UNICEF, which began in 1950 when girls and boys across the United States collected coins in hand-painted milk cartons

to help children affected by World War II. Celebrating its 69th year, this nostalgic tradition continues today as America’s longest running youth volunteer program with generations of children running door to door holding signature orange boxes and singing, “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF.” With over $180 million raised for health care, education, nutrition and more, the program has evolved into a month-long celebration of the power of kids helping

kids. Throughout October, kids, parents and teachers across the country can be real superheroes by collecting donations, big and small. Equipped with the iconic orange boxes, families can raise funds that add up to lifesaving change. As little as $1 can provide safe water to a child for more than 2 months; $3 can provide seven packets of therapeutic food; $5 can provide a pack of 10 notebooks and $7 can provide one warm

fleece blanket for a child. Halloween has become a “heroic” way to help others and build the next generation of global citizens. When kids trick-or-treat for a cause, they learn about global issues and feel empowered to make a difference. Start creating real-world change by picking up your own little orange box. With the support of Visa Inc., the iconic box will glow in the dark, allowing superpowers to shine even brighter.

Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ Roars Worldwide In 1994 the original “Lion King” not only won two Oscars it generated more than $400 million at the box office, making it the number one G-rated film of all time. Now a quarter of a century later, “The Lion King” has returned to the big screen and has generated 385 million dollars in the U.S. and over one billion worldwide. “The Lion King” still roars! John Favreau directs this new computer-generated version of “The Lion King.” The original animated story remains the same, but now all the animals look lifelike. Another carry-over from the original is James Earl Jones who still gives voice to Mufasa, just as he did in 1994. The story begins as Mufasa, and his mate Sarabi (Alfre Woodard) present their son Simba to all the animals in their kingdom as “Circle of Life” is sung. Everyone is overjoyed by the new arrival--well almost everyone. Mufasa’s younger brother Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor) resents the fact that the cub will be the future king--not him. JD McCrary is the voice for young Simba who playfully

sings “I Just Can’t Wait to be King.” Later he and Nala (Shahadi Wright Joseph) venture into forbidden territory where hyenas live. Soon they are chased by Shenzi (Florence Kasumba), Kamari (Keegan-Michael Key) and Azizi (Eric Andre) who envision the little ones as a tasty snack. Fortunately, Mufasa comes to their rescue--just in the nick of time. After a mild scolding Mufasa and Simba bond under the starry sky and all is forgiven. Later, after an accident, Scar convinces Simba that it’s all his fault. He then tells the cub to run away and never return. Lost and alone, Simba is befriended by Pumba, the warthog (Seth Rogen) and a funny little meerkat, Timon (Billy Eichner). To cheer him up they sing “Hakuna Matta” advising him to have “no worries”--just be happy. They also convert him to a vegetarian lifestyle. Their time together is a highlight of the film. Eventually, Nala (Beyonce) and Simba (Donald Glover) literally run into one another. Here’s where the beautiful

song “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” comes in. Nala then begs Simba to go home and save the lions from Scar and the hyenas. Even Pumba and Timon join in the fight. “The Lion King” has a lot to offer--music, drama, adventure, and comedy. It’s a perfect family film, but it may be too intense for very young viewers. “The Lion King” is rated PG for sequences of violence and peril and some thematic elements, Running time is

1 hour and 58 minutes. “The Lion King,” playing citywide, can also be seen at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. The El Capitan, which opened in 1926 when movie theatres were called movie palaces, has a beautiful interior and multiple stage curtains that rise before each and every show. There are Lion King displays in the lobby and downstairs where you can photograph the kids. Adjacent to the theatre is a Ghirardelli

Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop where you can purchase ice cream treats and Disney toys and videos. You also receive a chocolate treat as you leave the store. The El Capitan is a great place to take a date or your family. For further information, call 1-800-Disney6. “The Lion King” has a running time of 1 hour, 58 minutes and is rated PG for sequences of violence and peril.

Social Responsibility is Key to Career Happiness

By Desert Star Staff American children and teens, when asked the ageold question of what they want to be as adults. Lean toward careers that could bring personal fame or are just plain fun, rather than those that might contribute to the betterment of society or lead to scientific progress. “While we are focused on fame and fun, other countries are emphasizing discipline and a good work ethic,” says Dr. Steven Mintz (www.stevenmintzethics. com), author of Beyond Happiness and Meaning: Transforming Your Life Through Ethical Behavior. The latest example came in a survey Harris Poll conducted on behalf of Lego, where American children ages 8 to 12 picked vlogger/ YouTuber as their No. 1 career choice. Chinese children, in comparison, overwhelmingly chose astronaut. The results are similar to a survey Chicago-based marketresearch company C+R conducted a couple of years ago. American teenagers were asked about career aspirations and the largest percentage, 20 percent, said they want to be an athlete, artist or entertainer. Mintz says the emphasis on fame – combined with www.desertstarweekly.com

a trend of many employers trying to create a “fun” work environment for employees – is troubling. “Is this really what success looks like in the U.S.?” he asks. “Can we reasonably be expected to compete with the Chinese in the 21st century by making the workplace fun when the Chinese, who will likely surpass the U.S. as the world’s largest economy within the next ten years, has skyrocketed to the top through hard work and discipline?” However, eschewing fun for fun’s sake does not mean employees cannot find happiness at work. Mintz says that is better accomplished by creating a socially responsible workplace, which he says meshes nicely with the passion millennials and Gen Z have for social causes. Some ways to help employees find happiness and meaning on the job, he says, include: Establish an ethical culture. Lawsuit Seeks to Overturn New Fast-Track Deportation Rule By Desert Star Staff HARTFORD, Conn. – Immigrants’ rights advocates say a new rule expanding fast-track deportations is unconstitutional, and they’ve filed suit in a federal court to try to stop it. The new rule went into effect July 23. Before then, undocumented immigrants apprehended within 100 miles of the border who could not prove they had lived in this country for more than two weeks could be deported in a matter of days. The new rule, enacted without public comment, expands the residence requirement to two years and can be applied to immigrants anywhere in the United States without a hearing before an immigration judge. According to Celso Perez, a staff attorney at the ACLU’s Immigrant’s Rights Project, that violates the Administrative Procedure Act, the Immigration and Nationality Act and the Fifth Amendment’s due-process clause.

“You can literally be deporting citizens, lawful permanent residents, and you can be deporting individuals who may be undocumented but may also have legitimate grounds for staying in the country,” he states. Administration officials say the new rule will free up beds in immigrant detention facilities and reduce the backlog of cases in immigration court. But Perez says the rule puts anyone who doesn’t have proof of how long he or she has been in the country at risk of detention and could lead to massive sweeps in communities anywhere in the country. “It’s an extremely problematic carte blanche to officers in the sense that there is no real check on someone being picked up and detained by immigration,” Perez stresses. Before the rule change, immigrants had a chance to challenge the basis and means of their detention or argue that they had grounds for being allowed

Immigration advocates fear the new rule will lead to massive ICE raids in communities across the country. (U.S. Immigration and Customs enforcement) to remain in the country. Perez says the law requires a public comment period on a rule change such as this unless the administration can claim that exigent circumstances require

it to be enacted immediately. “The administration has been considering this for a period of years,” he states. “So, it’s unclear why now, all of a sudden, the rule is enacted the same day it’s

issued without a notice and comment period.” The lawsuit was been filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.

Improve Academic Outcomes through Access to Health Care Coverage

W

FAMILY FEATURES

ith each school year, parents dust off their annual checklists that help them organize their needs as their kids head back to the classroom. This school season, make sure one priority at the top of your to-do list is ensuring your children have health insurance. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, studies have shown that children who have health coverage miss fewer classes and perform better in school than those who are uninsured. With the proper health coverage, children can get the immunizations, check-ups, eye exams, dental visits and preventive care they may need to fully participate in school and remain engaged both in the classroom and extracurricular activities. Health coverage can also prove beneficial when a child is sick or injured. In fact, millions of children and teens already qualify for free or low-cost health coverage, including dental coverage, through Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). These programs can help those who qualify get the coverage they need to excel in the classroom. To help ensure their kids make the grade, parents need to first do their homework when it comes to health coverage. To make sure you have assessed your coverage options, keep in mind these health care coverage questions and answers:

What do Medicaid and CHIP cover?

How do I apply?

How do I know if my child is eligible?

When can I apply for enrollment?

Medicaid and CHIP provide comprehensive coverage for children and teens nationwide who qualify. This includes routine check-ups, doctor visits, prescriptions and immunizations, dental and vision care, and emergency services, all at little or no cost to you or your family. In most states, children and teens up to age 19 are eligible to enroll. Depending on your income, many families qualify for free or lowcost health coverage.

Once enrolled, how long is my child eligible for coverage?

Children and teens can stay covered for as long as they qualify. You'll need to renew their coverage once a year.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. Congress Considers New Federal Rules Limiting Excessive Heat

New rules being considered by Congress could help protect workers from dangerous heat. By Desert Star Staff Co-sponsored by Rep. Alma Adams of North Carolina, a Democrat from Charlotte, the Asunción Valdivia Heat Illness and Fatality Prevention Act would require the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to set standards for preventing excessive heat in the workplace for both outdoor and indoor workers. The legislation is named after a California farmworker who died of heat stroke in 2004 after picking grapes for 10 straight hours in heat up to 105 degrees. Rachel McIntoshKastrinsky, Medical Advocates for Healthy Air manager with Clean Air Carolina, says with climate change setting record-breaking temperatures, workers need protections. “We were very alarmed, especially because North Carolina actually happens to be one of the top states for heat-related deaths across the nation,” she states. “Many people have seen outdoor workers, whether that’s military, painters, housework, construction workers, but it can also happen to indoor workers that don’t have access to air conditioning.” Currently, there are no federal heat-stress safety standards for workers. The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the American Public Health Association, Medical Advocates for Healthy Air and nearly 100 other organizations support the legislation. Ben Skelton, owner of Skelton’s Landscaping Service in Chapel Hill, says this summer he’s had to get innovative to keep himself and his employees cool working all day in scorching temperatures. “This year I have started using one of those popup tents that people use for tailgating or picnicking, and I can take it easily to job sites,” he relates. “And if we’re doing work where we’re sitting in one spot for a long time, those tents have saved us this summer. It just makes all the difference in the world to have shade.” Excessive heat can trigger heat stroke, which happens when a body no longer is able to control its own temperature. People with certain medical conditions especially are at risk, says respiratory therapist Candace Cahoon. “When you’re looking at individuals with pre-existing

conditions, such as asthma, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, any respiratory illness, you’re going to have a lot more issues breathing,” she stresses. Nearly 700 people die from extreme heat each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
