Massive Fire In LA Los Angeles city firefighters battle a massive fire at a seven-story downtown apartment complex under construction in Los Angeles, California December 8, 2014 (Reuters / Gene Blevins)
Massive blaze in downtown LA on December 8: 250 firefighters, 2 major freeways closed By Desert Star Staff A massive fire has engulfed an apartment building under construction in downtown Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), firefighters were battling the blaze at the corner of Temple and Fremont streets, the Los Angeles Times reports. The LAFD has subsequently tweeted the exact location of the incident.
From the latest reports, it appears they are finally getting it under control. However, according to the LA Times, two adjacent buildings have been damaged in the blaze as the heat being emitted has burst their windows. “When they came out of the quarters they could see it was fully engulfed,” fire department spokeswoman Katherine Main told the paper. “It was a building
under construction in the framing phase. Almost 1 million square feet and a city block.” The fire apparently broke out in an apartment complex under construction near the four-level freeway interchange junction on the northern edge of downtown. A picture of the site is available on Google. The building was intended to be an upscale residential building with commercial

space on the lower level. LAFD spokesman David Ortiz told the LA Times that some 250 firefighters had been dispatched to extinguish the blaze, which he characterized as “huge.” Due to the size of the fire and the logistical issues necessary to put it out, the 101 Freeway nearby is closed in both directions, he said. The California Highway Patrol says that transition lanes
between the 110 and 101 have also been shut down. No injuries have been reported. Social media users in the city have been quick to post pictures of the pillar of fire reaching up into the night sky, with some taking a more ominous interpretation of the blaze. Several trashcans in the vicinity of the building have also been set on fire, according to social media reports.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 14th annual Christmas Tree Lane was held at a new venue this year, The Hard Rock Hotel, to a very appreciative list of guests. This event benefits Act of MS which Palm Springs celebrity Gloria Greer started in support of her daughter who was diagnosed with the Disease. The traditional host Jack Jones was unable to be the emcee this year so celebrities Ruta Lee and Scott Record stepped up for the roles of Emcee and did a fabulous job. The Honorary Chairs were Mayor Steve Poughnet and Harold Matzner with Patrick Evans as Guest Auctioneer. Event co-chairs were Gloria Greer and Linda Williamson, who also decorated several trees to be auctioned off. Pianist Bill Marx provided the music for the cocktail hour and inspection of the trees to be auctioned off for Act for MS. There was a silent auction of smaller trees and wreaths in the downstairs lobby. Celebrites that hosted trees for auction that were on hand to help auction off their trees included Carol Channing, Andrew Neiderman, Fred, the Hammer, Williamson, Ruta Lee, Mayor Steve Pougnet, Bella da Ball, Lisa Vanderpump, Jim “Fitz” Fitsgerald, Patrick Evans, Rita Vale in honor of Jerry Vale, to name just a few. Others who sponsored trees were Barry Manilow and Mark Byrd plus several celebrities who sponsored trees for the Silent Auction. It was a great night as the trees were sold sometimes for thousands of dollars. Each tree was unique and designed by local artists.

THE ANNUAL MCCALLUM GALA
Story and Photos by Pat Krause The McCallum broke records by raising more than 1.3 million dollars for this yearly Gala. Co-Chairs for the gala were Helene Galen and Harold Matzner. Donna MacMillan was the honoree for the 2014 gala. MacMillan accepted the award with a speech that had the audience in stitches, another one of her many talents. Celebrity entertainers were the very funny Martin Short and one of the finest voices of the century and a Broadway legend, Audra McDonald. The evening started with a composition by an exciting symphony orchestra, there is nothing like a sound that comes from the many instruments it takes to make a song come to life. Comedian Martin Short came out on stage singing, dancing and doing his hi-jinks. He asked for 3 gentlemen from the crowd for three Amigos. It took some prodding to get three brave men to come on stage for his skit. The 3 men wore large Spanish hats, and he had them do a funky dance to go along with his music from the movie, The 3 Amigos. Audra McDonald thrilled the audience with her beautiful voice. The evening always starts with dinners at various locations: Jillian’s, Cuistot, La Spiga and Wallys Restaurants. Everyone returns to the McCallum Theatre for the performances. Through impressive leadership and benefactors, the McCallum has been in the Black for over 10 years and continues to provide education for our local youth in the programs they conduct.

doesn’t apply, and the rules can be very punitive. Estate tax laws change regularly, which makes it difficult to stay on top of current legislation for most taxpayers. The IRS imposes an estate tax for estates that exceed $5.34 million. Estate taxes start at 40% and in some cases can be even higher. Each U.S. citizen or resident has the right to claim that exemption to protect up to $5.34 million in assets they have accumulated throughout their lifetime. In the past, if you did not elect to claim that exemption (think of it as a coupon you use at the supermarket) you lost it at your death. However, the IRS did a good very good thing earlier this year where they gave surviving spouses and families the ability to retroactively file for unused exemptions. They also expanded this benefit to same-sex couples for the first time ever. This special window is only available for taxpayers who meet the following requirements. The decedent must have: 1) A surviving spouse at the time of death 2) Died during 2011, 2012 or 2013 3) Been a U.S. citizen or resident at the time of death. It is very simple to claim the deceased spouse’s unused exemption amount (DSUEA). Form 706 estate tax return must

to the members. Operating rules cannot contradict the CC&Rs and must be in writing. Operating rules are only good until another board decides to change them, so they are not as permanent as restrictions in CC&Rs. If the association members supported a smoking ban, such a restriction might be approved by the members in a CC&R amendment. Smoking in attached housing is an increasingly controversial subject, as smoking declines, and associations increasingly address complaints of smoking in common areas, balconies and private patios. Thus far, dozens of California cities have adopted bans on smoking in common areas, and some have completely banned smoking – even inside homes. If a board is considering adopting a smoking ban, consider “grandfathering” current smokers, and consider having a town hall type board meeting to gauge member interest in the issue of smoking. Any habit, including smoking, should not be a nuisance for other owners. Thanks, Kelly
Dear S.C.: A rule regulating common area usage can be adopted by the board of directors as an “operating rule” under Civil Code 4340. Under Civil 4355(a) (1), a rule regulating common area usage would (as most rules) need to be adopted with thirty days advance notice Dear Kelly:

I have a condo that is my vacation home. This summer my neighbors hung flags that looked so patriotic - it was near the 4th of July. One neighbor even hung his Marine flag! A nearby neighbor complained about ‘all the flags’ and requested the board to have them removed. I will NOT remove mine! Have you ever heard of such an un-American situation??? Sincerely, C.K., Solana Beach
Dear C.K.: The Common Interest Development Act specifically protects the display of the American flag. Civil Code 4705 protects the right of homeowners to display the American flag within the member’s “separate interest” or exclusive use common area. In planned developments, the separate interest is the lot, which means the owner would be able to display the flag anywhere within their property. The “separate interest” of a condominium is the unit, which normally is the airspace (the condominium plan defines what is the unit). A condominium homeowner would not have the right to mount a flag pole on the
building roof, but could display the flag from their balcony or patio. A “flag” under this statute is the flag of the United States of America, in the form of cloth, fabric or paper, displayed from a staff or pole, or in a window, and is not made of lights, paint, roofing, siding, balloons, plant material or any type of building material. Your neighbor’s US Marine flag would not be protected by this law. Before disputing this issue with your HOA board, first make sure the flag is to be mounted in your separate interest or exclusive use area, and confirm the flag meets the statutory definition. Then, present a copy of the statute to the board, so it is aware that the American flag is protected. Thanks for your question, Kelly Kelly G. An Enthralling Tale for Historical Fiction Lovers
M. John Lubetkin’s new book,”Custer’s Gold,” is a thrill ride through the American west. By Desert Star Staff For more than 150 years, the often romanticized, pop version of the settling of America’s West has included: gun-slingers and saloons, prospectors and bandits, bankers and robber barons pulling financial strings, and bloody fighting between white settlers and Army soldiers versus Native Americans seeking to protect their lands. To a simplistic extent, this view is accurate for; after all, the West could be a dangerous place for those living on the frontier. One of the most enduring names from this period is George Armstrong Custer who played such a dramatic role in the Civil and American Indian wars. In 1873 Custer was sent to protect railroad surveyors from Sitting Bull who had announced that he would kill the “land measurers”. Little does the Custer of M. John Lubetkin’s novel know that
guarding Northern Pacific Railroad engineers in the Yellowstone Valley might become the least dangerous of his endeavors. When Custer leads the Seventh Cavalry to Dakota and Montana, he is excited to see Tom Rosser, a close friend from his West Point days and later a face-to-face Confederate foe during the war. However, Custer has yet to learn that his old schoolmate has discovered the location of a large cache of gold stolen in a spectacular robbery. Neither man is aware that the cunning, cold-blooded killer who stole the gold a decade earlier is watching their every move and willing to bet his life on retrieving it. Custer’s Gold balances the mounting tension surrounding the gold with plenty of nonstop action, moving from Native American battles to Robber Baron boardrooms to lovers’ triangles with ease. M. John Lubetkin crafts an
absorbing tale of historical fiction, illuminating this often violent, invariably corrupt era of American growth through realism, irony, and humor. As of December 4th Custer’s Gold was receiving four and five star reviews (4.33 average) from independent Amazon readers. The book (in hardcover, paperback, or electronic) has also been selected in the December 2014 issue of True West magazine for its Holiday Gift Guide section. Railway Historical Association (NPRHA). John’s memberships include the Western Writers of America, NPRHA (where he is a former board member), Mystery Writers of America, Railway and Locomotive Historic Society, and two Custer historical organizations, the Custer Battlefield Historic Museum Association and the LBHA. John and his wife, Linda, reside in McLean, Va.
By Angela Monroe CATHEDRAL CITY -You’ve probably noticed the holiday spirit shining throughout the Coachella Valley as people decorate their homes, but unfortunately with that can also come crime. Neighbors told us about people whose lights have been stolen from their homes. So to see how you can safeguard your home we went to the most decorated block in the valley, Minerva Road in Cathedral City, which transforms into Candy Cane lane this time of year to see how they protect their winter wonderland. It’s that time of year! The lights and decorations are
sparkling on Candy Cane Lane. Olaf -- you know, from the movie Frozen-- springs to life just in time for the holidays. John Elliot has an entire theme for his display this year. “Frozen, Disney’s frozen.” Taking a stroll down Candy Cane Lane -- Minerva Road in Cathedral City--- is a valley tradition. John estimates 60,000 people visit every year. “We’ve been doing it for 25 years, there’s only about four of us families left that started it,” said Elliott. Neighbors spend thousands of dollars to transform this block into a winter wonderland, but unfortunately some people steal
or vandalize these displays. “We’ve probably been vandalized in some way, shape or form some 8 out of the past 25 years we’ve been doing this,” said Elliott. Down the road, Dylan Hernandez says someone stole his neighbor’s antique toy fire engine. “If you see his truck out there, I’ll give you a reward, give it back!” To make sure the grinch doesn’t steal your Christmas, neighbors suggest you pull the plug on the lights earlier in the evening and bring inside any important decorations. “My wife had taken cribs and made circus trains and
Protecting Holiday Decorations from Thieves stuffed it with animals... and they stole all the animals one night,” said Elliott. After a news report about the theft, the community helped restore his holiday cheer. “For the next week we found nothing but stuffed animals at our door every time we came home from work,” said Elliott. Dylan has an extra set of eyes watching his home. “Well, I have security cameras at my home that survey the front yard.” He says the best eyes out there, are those of his neighbors.
“Everybody in the block is pretty much in the Christmas spirit so I’m pretty sure they’re looking out for us and Santa Claus, so there really isn’t a grinch around here,” said Hernandez. So once again, neighbors said it is best to turn the lights off at 10pm to discourage thieves, and take anything valuable inside. However, they said the best way of all is to get to know your neighbors so they watch out for you too.

More than 150 Detained in California
Demonstrators form a line to block traffic on Highway 80 during a march against the New York City grand jury decision to not indict in the death of Eric Garner in Berkeley, California December 8, 2014. (Reuters / Stephen Lam)
By Desert Star Staff Some 150 people have been arrested in California as protests spilled into a third night, after decisions not to charge white police officers for the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner prompted outcries about the use of force on minorities. Protests in Berkley involved more than a thousand people, several hundred of who stormed a major California freeway on
Monday night, blocking it off and holding traffic up. California Highway Patrol officers began arresting scores of protesters around 11:30 pm, reported the San Francisco Chronicle. Protesters had been throwing rocks and other projectiles at officers, California Highway Patrol spokesman Daniel Hill told Reuters. The arrests were predominantly made
for obstruction. Protesters started trying to access Interstate 90 at around 6:30 pm, outnumbering law enforcers hugely, while another group blocked an Amtrak train shortly before the arrests began. Thirty-year-old Danielle Fung was one of a dozen who linked arms on the track. She told the paper that the purpose of the action was to start “standing up for what we want, standing up for
ourselves,” said. “We are bringing attention to humanity.” “By shutting down this train, it will delay the rest of the trains in the Bay Area,” Navid Shaghaghi, 30, of Berkeley told the paper. “Now everyone will be asking, ‘why are the trains delayed?’ Because of the protesters. Unless we’re free, we will prevent the system from operating.” Further protests occurred outside the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Some 300 demonstrators blocked off the streets chanting: “I can’t breathe” – the last words of Eric Garner and a rallying catchphrase for thousands of demonstrators protesting in cities across the country at his death. On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner, a 44-year-old black man, died on Staten Island, New York, after a white police officer put him in a choke hold, a technique prohibited by the New York City Police Department. After repeating about a dozen times, “I can’t breathe,”Garner, who had asthma, reportedly suffered a heart attack and died. Garner left behind a family of six children. The New York grand jury’s
decision not to charge the officer and a similar non-indictment of former Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson, who fatally shot unarmed black teenager Michael Brown in August, have resulted in outrage and protests, coast to coast, over racial profiling, police brutality and an overall mistrust of America’s legal system. The phrase “hands up, don’t shoot” - a reference to Brown’s killing – has also become a rallying cry. In downtown Phoenix, a further 200 people marched on police headquarters over the death of another unarmed black man at the hands of a white officer. Thirty-four-year-old Rumain Brisbon was fatally shot after accusations of drug dealing. “I want a conviction. When was the last time an officer was charged for killing someone?” Brisbon’s friend, Brandon Dickerson, told ABC 15. “I want a conviction.” His nine-year-old daughter led the march to the Phoenix police station, asking who shot her dad. She was barely audible through her tears.
Foundations Partner to Assist Journalism Students
H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation presents grant to Jim Murray Memorial Foundation By Desert Star Staff Palm Desert, California– A grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation will benefit a deserving young journalism student chosen for a 2015 Jim Murray Memorial Foundation (JMMF) scholarship. The $5,000 award will be presented to an essayist selected in the JMMF’s annual competition for second and third year undergraduates. “We are grateful to the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation for partnering with us in our 15-year tradition of
assisting outstanding students with their education as they pursue the journalistic ideals of Jim Murray,” said Linda Murray Hofmans, Founder and CEO of JMMF. A Murray Scholar shows by academic excellence, with emphasis in writing, qualities that promise to perpetuate the Jim Murray spirit of journalistic integrity and creativity. With the purpose of recognizing these select students, JMMF raises funds throughout the year and then distributes
scholarships through the foundation’s nationwide essay competition. A panel of nationally known journalists decides winners. To date, 93 Murray Scholars have each received a $5,000 scholarship. Thirty-one preselected colleges and universities, including the nation’s top journalism schools, currently participate in the essay competition. “The Jim Murray Memorial Foundation’s unique scholarship program encourages young writers to uphold journalistic
standards like those of Jim Murray, who was admired and respected by his readers and his peers,” said Catharine Reed, Senior Program Officer of the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. Murray Hofmans established the JMMF to perpetuate her late husband’s legacy and his love and dedication to his extraordinary career in journalism. Murray was one the founders of Sports Illustrated. Joining the Los Angeles Times in 1961, Murray won a Pulitzer

Murray was named the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association’s “Sportswriter of the Year” 14 times throughout his career and was inducted into the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame Writers’ Wing in 1988. Murray was recently elected (posthumously) to the National Museum of Thoroughbred Racing’s Joe Hirsch Media Roll of Honor.

Stephen Hawking’s Life Becomes a Compelling Drama
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Biopics of extraordinary people can be extremely moving and rewarding for movie audience. Biopics of extraordinary, living people, however, can be downright daunting and intimidating for the actors involved in creating and bringing the story to the screen. Screenwriter Anthony McCarten and director James Marsh, of the romantic drama “The Theory of Everything”, starring Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones, as Stephen Hawking and his wife Jane Wlde Hawking, have fashioned, with great skill, a movie about Britain’s famous living physicist. Their focus is on the relationship and the love story of a brilliant mind short-circuited by a form of ALS disease in his early 20’s, and the highly educated young English woman who becomes his wife; placing her own literary career on hold in order to love and care for her husband over a twenty-five year period. If you’re looking for the cerebral fireworks of quantum physics and discoveries, endlessly debated by colleagues and scholars, along with giant blackboards with complicated and esoteric equations plastered all over them, well you should elsewhere. “The Theory of www.desertstarweekly.com
Everything” is a character-driven movie. It’s lushly photographed by Benoit Delhomme, exquisitely crafted and directed by James Marsh, and superbly acted in the style of movies that we don’t see much anymore. It’s a most welcomed throwback to movies that were linear and compelling in their telling and captured a period with style and grace. All lives have a story to tell. Movies without a story to tell are films written and designed merely to technically assault the senses and sell popcorn. One of the many strengths of British cinema and TV is in its depth of wonderfully classical trained actors available and eager to perform a wide range of roles – from leading men and women to supporting roles – which they perform without bruising their egos or stature. Celebrity status is not a consideration in selecting a role. The traditional adage of “there are no small parts in the theatre, only small actors”, applies to their work ethic. It’s a repertory system of sorts that has served audiences and them very well over the years. The story set in 1960’s England revolves around Cambridge University student, twenty-one year old Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne), who meets and falls in love with fellow student Jane Wild (Felicity
Jones). Hawking, a brainy, introverted, and somewhat of an anti-social young man, meets Wilde at a university dance where a mutual attraction develops. Their courtship begins to flourish and grow. Then Hawking’s life completely changes as a result of a medical diagnosis of a rare form of ALS (commonly referred to Lou Gehrig’s disease) that is detected following a fall on the school campus. Undaunted by the news of Hawking’s condition, the young lovers continue dating, and eventually marry, despite the advice from parents to wait a little while. The parents are solidly played by Emily Watson and Guy Oliver-Watts, as Jane’s parents and Abagail Cruttenden and Simon McBurney, as Stephen’s parents. Their concern is that Stephen has been told he has just two years to live. Their romantic, but physically challenging lifestyle, produces four children and fame as Hawking, a promising English physicist now becomes a scientific celebrity and famous for his books and scholarly papers and speeches on quantum theories of black holes and the time/space continuum. Over the years Hawking’s deteriorating health issue requires additional medical assistance, which comes in the December 10, 2014
form of therapist Elaine Mason (Maxine Peake). Elaine’s interest in Hawking ultimately grows beyond her therapist role to one of admirer, to would-be lover, to Hawking’s second wife. After twenty-five years of marriage Hawking divorces Jane to marry Elaine. As Jane begins her new life, she seeks out the friendship of the children’s old piano teacher, sensitively played by Charlie Cox. He was always drawn to the Hawking family. First as a piano teacher, and now he returns as Jane’s suitor. Not only is Redmayne’s incredibly difficult portrayal a marvel of nuance and intelligence, it’s a testament to the actor’s dedication and commitment in creating a full-blown, complicated and physically challenging portrayal. Stephen Hawking, at age seventy-two saw the film before its release and gave it his blessing. I cannot think of another actor who could play Hawking as convincingly as Eddie Redmayne. It’s a bravura performance, astonishing in its artistry, power, and inventiveness and is the type of performance that touches the hearts of Academy voters come Oscar nomination time. Comparisons are odious at best, however, it’s hard not to compare Daniel Day-Lewis and his Academy Award turn
as Christy Brown in “My Left Foot” with Redmayne’s Hawking portrayal. Both actors play similarly afflicted and physically challenged characters. I feel pretty safe in saying that Redmayne wouldn’t object to the comparison at all, especially if walks away with the Best Actor statuette like Day-Lewis did. Right now the early buzz on the street is that he has a lock on a nomination. The Oscar chatter also sees a nomination for Jones as Best Lead Actress. As good as Redmayne is, however, he doesn’t do it all alone. The on-screen chemistry between the young English beauty Felicity Jones and Redmayne is solid, palpable, and appealing. Jones brings such inner strength to her character of Jane Hawking. Her performance is a study in unrequited loyalty and devotion as a wife, mother, and care-giver; all the while not falling into a character drowning in bathos or the “suffering wife” syndrome. It’s no wonder the hearts of the ladies in the audience go out to her. The success of “The Theory of Everything” rests squarely on the strength of its two very talented stars: Redmayne and Jones. Be on the lookout for a Best Picture nomination as well come January 2015 when Oscar nominations are rolled out.

Documentary On The Birth Of The “ER” By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Unless one is a health professional, one only gets to view the Emergency Room (ER) either by walking into one as a patient or, on a gurney while being transferred from an ambulance. Either way, the documentary film written and directed by first time filmmaker Dr. Ryan McGarry, MD, is a fascinating and eyepopping journey into work-shifts of ER doctors, and nurses of Los Angele County Hospital. This is not a TV series episode or “ER”, although it looks like one. The “characters” in this documentary are the real McCoy. No “actor portrayals” here; just real life and real death situations and the aftermath. It’s is visual chronical of life in the ER from the doctors and nurses POV’s. Sometimes it’s heart-breaking. Sometimes it’s achingly poignant and uplifting. This engaging documentary film, however, is always a compelling screen journey of real dedicated medical professionals doing what they love and what they do best: putting into practice the Hippocratic oaths they signed years ago in medical school. There are eight medical doctors and one registered nurse (RN) that are featured in the 88 minutes long film: Doctors Andrew Eads, Jamie Eng, Danny
Cheng, Arash Kohanteb, William “Billy” Mallon, Ryan McGarry, Edward Newton, Dave Pomeranz, and RN Luis Enriquez (a 28 year ER veteran). Although the film takes place in the present, it has its beginnings in Los Angeles during the 1970’s. There wasn’t any Emergency Room special unit back then. A group of doctors at LA County Hospital sort of got together and began treating patients who would wander into the hospital seeking treatment for severe injuries, either in accidents at home or on the road. Gunshot wounds; survivors of fires, even for unknown symptoms of distress, in short, all manner of medical issues. One thing all the patients had in common was their inability to pay for their medical care. Under California law, no one is turned away because they are indigent. The title of the film “Code Black”, is hospital-speak for a waiting room overflowing with all sorts of patients: young, old, male, and female, all with a compelling medical need. A 20-foot by 26-foot space in the hospital was provided by hospital officials and thus was born the country’s first “ER Unit”. In the early years, the ER was referred to as the “C-Booth” run by the doctors and nurses with rules and regulations created
by them based on the needs of the patients; ranking the care accordingly: Number one - heart attacks and similar traumas; Number 2 - life threatening injuries and situations; Number 3 - broken bones, etc. and Number 4 - coughs, colds, fevers, aches and pains, and the like. It is a fluid ranking and shifts according to the needs of the patients. In the C-Booth early scenes, it looks likes chaos reigns supreme. Doctors, nurses,
and technicians work feverishly on patients on operating tables, sometime less than 1 or 2 feet apart. It looks more like a military mash unit in action. But it’s a controlled and organized chaos. Everyone knows his or her job and all perform as a welloiled, calm, collected, and polite medical unit, despite the urgency of the medical procedures being administered. Dr. McGarry’s camera also takes the time away from the ER action to interview, not only group meetings, but one-on-one interviews with the doctors to get a larger sense of the needs of the medical community as well as its patients. Certain elements of our US Congress keep claiming America’s healthcare system is broken, while others deny there is anything wrong at all. When the new LA County Hospital opened a few years ago next to the old hospital, a new paradigm was implemented. The age of a computerized society now wags the tails of American society and business. Records are now computerized, infinitely more information for insurance purposes must be gathered on patients and procedures performed. It may be automated for business performance, but the result is a separating of the
time spent and the relationship between doctors and patients. According McGarry, ”… I hope the film will also provide some crucial perspective on the current healthcare debate. To see what it’s like to be on the front line of providing care in this country shows how difficult it is for physicians and nurses: try telling a patient that they need to see a specialist for their rotting foot, only to find out that the specialist will only accept a certain level of insurance. Or ask them to choose between being late for their night shift or wait yet another hour in the ER ( some spend up to 8 to 10 hours waiting to see a doctor or a nurse) in the hope that they will see a doctor, who may not have a permanent solution for their illness anyway.” With an ever increasing proportion of patients using the ER unit as their only means of receiving medical help, the situations resonates with today’s viewers. Scenes in the film are being replicated in large urban cities all across America. “Code Black” is a visual wake-up call for America’s healthcare industry to come up with a fresh approach in serving the needs of its almost 320 million citizens.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-573-1965 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site www.priorityposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case . Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. PUBLISH: 12/03/14, 12/10/14, 12/17/14 First American Title Insurance Company 400 S. Accrued interest and additional advances, if any, will increase this figure prior to sale. It is possible that at the time of sale the opening bid may be less than the total indebtedness due. Former Murietta Mayor Pleads Not Guilty in DUI Crash By KMIR News Staff MURRIETA, Ca. - Murrieta’s former mayor pleaded not guilty today to a felony drunken driving in an Oct. 16 collision that left four high school cheerleaders injured. Alan William Long, 44, who resigned after his arrest, is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol causing bodily injury, along with four sentence-enhancing allegations. Long, free on a $50,000 bond, entered the plea at a hearing today at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta, where a judge told him he couldn’t drink alcohol while free on bail, according to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office. Long, also an Anaheim Fire Department battalion chief, resigned as mayor Oct. 20, but was re-elected to a second fouryear term in November. It was unclear if he would assume the seat or if his resignation would remain in effect. Long, who driving a full-
size pickup truck allegedly rearended a sedan carrying four cheerleaders from Murrieta Valley High School at Jefferson and Lily avenues shortly after 8 p.m. that Thursday night. The victims, 14-17 years old, were taken to hospitals, two with what Murrieta police Lt. Discocoll called major injuries. Long showed ``signs and symptoms consistent with alcohol impairment,’’ police said. Long’s blood-alcohol content was 0.08 percent, John Hall of the District Attorney’s Office said. A lawsuit was later filed on behalf of the four girls asking for unspecified monetary damages. One of them had fractured neck vertebrae, her attorney told City News Service. Anaheim police Lt. Bob Dunn, speaking on behalf of the city fire department, told City News Service that Long’s superiors would be ``monitoring Long found himself in the investigation’’ to determine the national spotlight over what, if any, disciplinary action the summer, when busloads to take. immigration detainees, many

S P O RT S Palm Springs High School Win Second CIF Title in Football BY DANIEL MARINELLI
Palm Springs – When thPhelan, CA – In last Friday’s CIF-SS Easter n Division championship game, the Palm Springs Indians defense needed to play its best game of the season to have any chance at defeating the high-scoring Serrano Diamondbacks. Led by six-foot running back Geordan King’s eight playoff touchdowns, the Diamondbacks stormed through the bracket, outscoring opponents 132-40. With Taylor Hawkins, Franklin Miller, Riley Hagar, Ray Mullen and Will Olvera, the Indians had more talented athletes then Serrano but their path to the title was not as convincing. The desert team only outscored Moreno Valley, Hesperia and Oak Hills by a combined 29 points, granted, their playoff schedule was tougher than Serrano’s. Conversely, the way the Diamondbacks rolled over the La Quinta Blackhawks by 18 points, a team that had already defeated the Indians earlier in the season, really made a statement. The Indians figured to be the underdogs, especially since the game was played at Serrano High School. King got the title game started early, rushing for the team’s first two scores in the first quarter. There was little offense for the Indians in the first half and in the second quarter, head coach Dan Murphy decided the team needed to go for it on fourth, and goal Olvera threw a touchdown pass to Franklin Miller. With an extra field goal in the quarter, the Indians only trailed 14-10 at halftime. In the third quarter, King broke away for his third rushing touchdown of the game to put the Diamondbacks ahead 21-
10. The run had been working all night but form this point on, the Indians defense piled more guys on the line and did not give up another touchdown to the dynamic King. “We made a few (defensive) adjustments at halftime,” Indians wide receiver and defensemen Ray Mullen said. “The coaches just calmed the players down and told us what we needed to do. It was mostly the players who really pushed each other, we all knew we had one chance at this.” At the end of the of the third, the high-powered Indians offense marched down the field and Hawkins caught a nine-yard touchdown pass that shrunk the deficit to four – 21-17. The small lead carried into the final quarter where the Palm Springs defense did not let up. The Indians stopped King on fourth down, received the ball and started what would be the game-winning drive. On third and 19, from deep in Palm Springs territory, Olvera threw a 20-yard pass that the D1-bound Hawkins had to leap over the defender to grab. The all-DVL – and probably all-division – receiver ran the ball an extra 12-yards and the Indians offense was in gear. With another clutch third down conversion to Miller, followed by a 40-yard catch and gain from Mullen, Olvera was a throw from the end zone, and the lead. With just under six minutes left in the fourth quarter, Miller caught his second touchdown pass of the game, completing an 11-point Indians comeback. Serrano had one more chance to try to win the game but could not succeed in passing against the intimidating Palm Springs secondary. The Diamondbacks even tried King
six times in their final drive and only gained 12 yards. Palm Springs High School avenged its 2009 loss in the CIF championship to the Diamondbacks. This is the second football championship for Palm Springs High School and the second championship for the school this fall. The girls’ volleyball team took home the CIF crown in late November. It feels good,” Miller said. “We have been underdogs all year and just for us to come out and prove a point. It’s amazing to know that hard work does pay off – it’s amazing.” Olvera finished the game with 275 yards and two touchdowns, a great performance on a huge stage. Despite the adjustments, King still filled that stat sheet for Serrano with 287 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Including his touchdown, Hawkins finished the game with 123 yards receiving and Mullen finishing with 98 yards. ‘It feels great,” Mullen said. “All that hard work in season and even before that – proven to be worth it. This is a big

O U R MISSION: accomplishment for our team.” The 2014 season is over but with Olvera, the Hawkins brothers and Miller all returning, the Indians will be back and
ready to compete for a division championship again next year. For more on sports in the Coachella Valley, follow Dan on Twitter @dsmarine7.
