Groups Urge CA to Harness Blue Carbon in Climate Strategy By Suzanne Potter/PNS SAN DIEGUITO LAGOO, Calif. - Coastal protection groups are pressing California to prioritize so-called “blue carbon” ecosystems in the fight against climate change. Dozens of groups have sent a letter to the head of the California Natural Resources Agency - asking for action to protect existing wetlands and near-shore areas and restore those that have been degraded. Gilly Lyons, an officer with the Conserving Marine Life in the United States program of The Pew Charitable Trusts, is among those who signed the letter. “The request from the signers is to protect biodiversity, to store and sequester carbon, and to mitigate the effects of climate change that we’re already living with,” said Lyons, “things
like ocean acidification, storm surges, coastal flooding, etc.” During the public comment period, the letter comes for a draft of the CNRA’s new “Natural and Working Lands Climate Smart Strategy,” to be finalized early next year. Last year, Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order requiring state agencies to accelerate the natural removal of carbon and build climate resilience, especially in lower-income communities. Angela Kemsley is the conservation and communication manager at the group WILDCOAST, currently restoring two lagoons in San Diego County. She said natural features like eelgrass beds are essential tools in climate mitigation. “They’re actually much more efficient at storing this carbon than land-based
plants,” said Kemsley. “And so, they’re able to take a bunch of carbon out of the atmosphere, store it
in the soil - and that helps to fight climate change.” According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 90% of
California’s historic wetlands have been drained for agriculture and development over the past century.

The Sully Band “When The Battle Is Over.” By Desert Star Staff San Diego-based 10-piece powerhouse The Sully Band has unveiled their new single “When The Battle Is Over.” This hidden Dr. John-penned gem was initially recorded as a onesided boast by Delaney & Bonnie and later by Aretha Franklin. However, the Sully Band gives the song a fun and funky update, flipping the tune into a rollicking duet between Sully and the soulful Rebecca Jade (Sheila E., Elton John, Dave Koz). “When The Battle Is Over” is from The Sully Band’s debut LP, Let’s Straighten It Out!, set for release on March 11th via Belly Up Records/Blue Élan Records. “This song was a

hoot to sing live in the studio with Rebecca–going round for round with such a great singer,” says frontman Bob “Sully” Sullivan. “She claims to wear the crown, but I got in some good vocal licks too.” Let’s Straighten It Out! was conceived in the hallowed halls of Henson Recording Studio in Hollywood, California (formerly A&M Studios). With it, Sully and his bluesy, nine-piece beast of a band take us on a journey through the ups, downs, and allaround of love by way of 10 classic ‘60s and ‘70s soul, blues, and R&B tunes. The album was recorded in only five jam-packed days, with “mostly-live” versions of carefully curated love-themed songs that made a mark when they were released initially and feel relevant today. Sully’s soulful, heartfelt vocals cut across layers of horns and guitars that take the listener on an emotional arc of joy, disappointment, struggle, and redemption. Multiple Grammy Awardwinning producer Chris Goldsmith (Blind Boys of Alabama, Ben Harper, Charlie Musselwhite, Big Head Todd) provided the musical curation that makes up Let’s Straighten It Out!. Anchored by Grammy Award-winning slayer of the bass, James East (Eric Clapton, Elton John, Michael
Jackson, and many others), The Sully Band comprises seasoned, accomplished players who hail from diverse backgrounds locales like Japan, Panama, and the island of Lemon Grove. In addition, the horn section features sax-flute-harp-man Tripp Sprague (Kenny Loggins, The Little River Band, Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, The Four Tops) and trumpet and flugelhorn player Steve Dillard (The Righteous Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd). At age six, Sully caught the music bug after picking up a nylon-string guitar and playing the first few chords of “Sitting on the
Dock of the Bay” with his dad. In high school, the barrel-chested, all-American football player rocked out to Boston and Foreigner with his buddies, starred in every show-tune-laden musical theatre production through college, and ended each day with James Brown or Stevie Wonder on his Pioneer receiver. In his 20’s, after pounding the unforgiving Los Angeles pavement trying to cut a record deal, he embarked on a 35-year detour, traveling a storied path from Price Club cashier to self-made entrepreneur and national radio/TV personality, ultimately
finding his way back to his first true love: music. Now, after years away from the stage, he is back in full force. He and the band have played regional and national shows to small but mighty crowds, from Southern California’s legendary Belly Up Tavern to Austin’s illustrious Antone’s Nightclub, making his mark as a compelling musician and live performer ready to “Straighten it Out.” UPCOMING SHOWS: 1/20 - The Mint - Los Angeles, CA 3/17 - Belly Up Tavern - Solana Beach, CA

California to become ‘abortion sanctuary.’
By Desert Star Staff California plans to become an abortion sanctuary for Americans from other states as pro-abortion activists warn that many states could soon ban the practice. In response to the possibility of the proabortion ‘Roe v. Wade’ Supreme Court decision of 1973 being overturned – which would result in more conservative states making abortion after a set number of weeks illegal – California Governor Gavin Newsom said, “We’ll be a sanctuary.” “We are looking at ways to support that inevitability and looking at ways to expand our protections,” the governor revealed. The California Future of Abortion Council, which is working with Newsom’s office, published a list of recommendations should
other states outlaw abortion, including “investment in abortion funds,” improved medical transportation services, and an evaluation of “existing barriers to abortion care later in pregnancy.” “California policymakers must begin acting upon these recommendations and preparing the state to serve potentially millions more people seeking abortion care as other states prepare extreme bans to an essential health service,” the council warned, adding that California needs to take “meaningful action” to “ensure abortion is available and equitably accessible to all.” In her statement, California State Senate President Toni Atkins said the state would have to work to ensure that California remains “a beacon of hope for the rest of our nation” and “for
ourselves, for our daughters and sons, our gender-fluid and non-binary loved ones, and all those who come after us.” Pro-abortion activists have expressed fear that Roe v. Wade – which ruled
women have a right to get an abortion without restriction – could be overturned. However, the Supreme Court appears likely to uphold the law in Mississippi that prohibits the majority of
abortions after 15 weeks. Activists fear that such a ruling would lead to other conservative states implementing similar laws.

CA Good-Government Groups Focus on Racial Equity in Redistricting
By Suzanne Potter/PNS SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- As California enters the final stretch in the redistricting process, civil rights groups are pressing the state’s redistricting commission to prioritize racial equity, so historically underrepresented groups have a better shot at electing leaders of their choice. The California Redistricting Commission holds public meetings on the draft legislative maps almost every day. The maps are expected to be approved on Dec. 24. Kathay Feng, executive director of California Common Cause, said communities of interest need to examine the
proposed maps closely. “We should be looking hard about whether the proposed lines are drawn in a way that maybe they inadvertently or intentionally hurt a community, but they’re drawn that way to help an incumbent,” Feng contended. Advocates want voting districts that avoid pitting minority groups against each other and keep communities of interest together. The commission is now taking public comment on the draft maps at its meetings and website. Brandon Jessup, deputy director of data and technology
for the advocacy group State Voices, said advocates need to delve deep into the census data and press the state commission to consider where communities of color are likely to grow. “We also need to say that in the next five years,
this community will now be a minority-majority community,” Jessup asserted. “And therefore, we have to give them the agency to elect folks that look like them, that reflect their interests.” Groups are also preparing to sue under the Voting Rights

Post-Glasgow, Local Governments Join Race to Zero
By Suzanne Potter/PNS LOS ANGELES -- A new report found American cities and counties should make it their goal to reduce
greenhouse-gas emissions by 63% by 2030 to live up to the Paris Climate Agreement and keep global warming in check. In April, President Joe
Biden pledged to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 50% by 2030. Angie Fyfe, executive director of ICLEI Local
Governments for Sustainability USA, which produced the report, said cities ought to set their sights even higher. “Because we are a more developed and wealthier nation, to achieve our fair share of emission reductions, we have set targets for cities at 63% reduction by 2030,” Fyfe explained. ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability USA helps local governments create an inventory of their greenhousegas emissions, set sciencebased targets and develop a plan to reduce them. As a result, many cities are replacing their fleets of cars and buses with electric vehicles, making their towns more pedestrianand cyclist-friendly, and helping families insulate their homes and buy electric appliances to improve energy efficiency. Sam Liccardo, mayor of
San Jose, formed a community choice energy program, which allows customers to buy power derived from renewable sources to help “green the grid.” “And since that time, we’ve seen such a dramatic improvement in our portfolio,” Liccardo pointed out. “We’re now 90% GHG-free, and our goal, of course, is to get to 100%.” San Jose has also moved to prevent urban sprawl by setting aside land for open space and building a network of electricvehicle charging stations. Disclosure: ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability USA contributes to our fund for reporting on Budget Policy and Priorities, Climate Change/Air Quality, Energy Policy, and the Environment.
Reality TV star Josh Duggar found guilty on child porn charges
By Desert Star Staff Former reality TV star Josh Duggar, one of the mammoth Duggar brood made famous by TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting reality show, has been found guilty of downloading and possessing child porn. He faces up to 20 years in prison. The eldest of the family of 19, Josh Duggar, was found guilty on one count each of receiving and possessing child pornography on Thursday. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and fines of up to $250,000 on each count. TLC, which aired the ultrareligious Arkansas family’s reality show, was forced to cancel the show in 2015 when it became known that Josh had molested four of his sisters and a babysitter. Authorities had begun looking into allegations of
abuse in 2006 after a family friend reportedly tipped them off, but ultimately decided the statute of limitations had been exceeded. Duggar confessed following the discovery, publicly apologizing for cheating on his wife, hiding a pornography addiction, and otherwise being “the biggest hypocrite ever.” The child porn case was uncovered when a Little Rock police detective found sexual images of children, including toddlers, being shared on a computer used by Duggar. Another agent testified that images of sexual abuse of children had been downloaded onto a laptop at a car dealership owned by Duggar. While the reality star’s lawyer insisted someone else had uploaded or downloaded the images to frame Duggar, the jury did not buy that story.
The 33-year-old Duggar will be sentenced to approximately four months. His trial took six days, with
just two witnesses called for the defense and ten for the prosecution. Meanwhile, Duggar’s
father, Jim Bob, is running for a vacant Arkansas State Senate seat in the northwest part of the state.
Twitter pilots new feature to help users police platform
By Desert Star Staff Social media giant Twitter is teasing a new feature that will allow users to add specifically tailored content warnings to individual tweets in the latest move for users to police their platform under new CEO Parag Agrawal. Twitter users will be able to hide their tweets behind individualized content warnings going forward, a tweet by company account @TwitterSafety announced on Wednesday. People use Twitter to discuss what’s happening globally, which sometimes means sharing unsettling or sensitive content. We’re testing an option for some of www.desertstarweekly.com
you to add one-time warnings to photos and videos you Tweet out to help those who might want the warning. pic. twitter.com/LCUA5QCoOV — Twitter Safety (@TwitterSafety) December 7, 2021 The platform already allows users to add content warnings to all their tweets at once, and the new feature is billed as bringing nuance to the system. Going forward, users will be able to tag single tweets with warnings and specifically categorize those warnings. For example, they’ll be able to flag posts as “nudity,” “violence,” or “sensitive,” and users viewing the poster’s feed will see the image blurred out
until they click through the warning, similar to the “disinformation” warnings seen on offending posts on Facebook. It’s not Twitter’s first move into encouraging users to police themselves. On Tuesday, the company announced that it was working on a “humanfirst” reporting process, meaning that rather than asking a user who reports a tweet what rules the post is breaking, the user will be asked to describe what December 10, 2021
happened leading up to the reporting
process. Then, based on that disclosure, Twitter will apply – or not apply, as the case may be – a specific violation.
The user will also have the option of subjecting all their tweets to a blanket warning. Unfortunately, the latest feature is not available to all users yet, though it will reportedly be rolled out to a “wider audience” in 2022. Recently appointed CEO Agrawal has wasted no time reorganizing the company, structuring it under four key pillars rather than having all functions report to the chief executive. The aim is to speed up Twitter’s functioning, founder Jack Dorsey’s replacement explained.

Man arrested trying to enter US Capitol with gun
By Desert Star Staff US Capitol Police have arrested a man trying to enter a congressional office building with a handgun in his bag. “This morning at approximately 7:40 am, our officers in the Longworth Building spotted the image of a handgun in a bag on the x-ray screen,” a police statement said. Police said the man was “tracked down and arrested” four minutes after the bag was found and was identified as a staffer with the House Chief Administrative Office, Jeffrey Allsbrooks. Allbrooks told officers he “forgot” the gun was in his bag. As a result, he is being charged with carrying
a pistol without a license. Capitol Police sent a security alert to staffers shortly before 8 am, warning them to shelter inside the nearest office, remain quiet and stay away from windows. The lockdown was lifted shortly after, with staffers told to return to normal operations. Police said they would continue to investigate what happened “before, during and after those four minutes.” The Thursday morning incident is the latest to put Capitol Police on high alert since the January 6 riot, during which hundreds of supporters of Donald Trump stormed the building. part of the Capitol complex, Health and Human Services In October, the O’Neill was evacuated due to a bomb was also evacuated over a House Office Building, also threat. The Department of bomb threat last month, and
By Desert Star Staff A majority in the Senate voted to repeal President Joe Biden’s vaccine mandate for businesses with more than a hundred employees, with two Democrats joining Republicans to oppose the policy. Fifty-two members of the Senate voted in favor of repealing the mandate on
Wednesday, while 48 voted against it. Those in favor included all 50 Republican senators and two Democrats, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin and Montana Senator Jon Tester. The rest of the Democrats in the Senate voted to maintain Biden’s mandate, and they were joined by the only two independent senators,
the nearby Botanical Gardens were evacuated because of a suspicious package.
Senate majority votes to repeal vaccine mandate Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Angus King of Maine. While the vote showed significant opposition to Biden’s mandate – which threatens fines for companies with 100 employees or more that fail to make sure all their staff is fully vaccinated against Covid-19 – it is unlikely to result in a reversal of the policy any time soon.
To pass Congress, a repeal would also have to receive a majority in the House of Representatives and escape being vetoed by Biden, which would be incredibly unlikely. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer – a Democrat – attacked the vote, accusing Republicans of being antivaxxers and comparing them
to people who believed “the sun revolved around the Earth” and that the “Earth was flat.” The Republicans defended their stance, however, warning that such vaccine requirements are unconstitutional and threaten job security even further during an economydecimating pandemic
5 Easy Ways to Enhance Digestive Health
A
FAMILY FEATURES
s your social schedule picks up steam and you attend more social gatherings and celebrations, you may find yourself with an unexpected issue: digestive troubles. Problems like this can have a negative impact on your overall wellness, so it’s important to make healthy digestion a priority. According to Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of how to live long and be healthy, the health of the digestive system is the core of optimum health. Ayurvedic medicine asserts the digestive system is based on the strength and balance of its Agni (fire), which enables the body to absorb, digest and assimilate food. The teachings suggest an imbalanced Agni creates undigested residues, which form toxins that create imbalances and can lead to disease. Some of the dietary guidelines for healthy digestion and strong Agni include: n Allowing 4-6 hours between meals n Avoiding eating between meals n Avoiding foods with cold, wet and heavy qualities n Drinking ginger tea or hot water to stimulate the Agni n Starting a meal with pungent (hot), sour and salty flavors n Consuming a small amount of bitter taste before a meal to increase the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach Take steps to protect and nurture your digestive health with these tips:
Add Fiber to Your Diet
Plant-based foods that are high in fiber fill you up faster, so you’re less likely to overeat, and they also help with digestive regularity. Increase your intake of high-fiber foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds. Take a gradual approach to avoid upsetting your digestive tract and bump up your water intake as you go since fiber will absorb it and decrease the likelihood you experience gas or cramping.
time to process food. You’ll give your brain more time to communicate with your stomach and be more aware of when you’ve satisfied your hunger.
Stay Hydrated
Start Exercising
Keeping your body well hydrated is like making sure your car’s engine is well lubricated. It keeps all your moving parts in sync and operating for top performance. Some fluids can also help with detoxification, which can be especially beneficial when your social calendar is full and your opportunities to overindulge are greater. An option like Buddha Teas’ Detox Dharma contains detoxifying herbs that stimulate your digestive system. Strengthening and soothing herbs are also incorporated into this balanced formula resulting in an effective yet gentle detox tea. For another solution, Turmeric Ginger Tea contains enough black pepper to make curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) bio-available in hot water, helping build healthy Agni.
Eat Slower

However, if you jump into a workout too quickly after eating, you could actually do the opposite. Eat light before exercising then have a protein-rich balanced meal for recovery afterward.

ou’re sharing a great conversation with friends at a holiday party when it hits you: You need to go, and you need to go now. As you make a clumsy exit, unsure if you’ll be able to make it to the bathroom in time, you may ask yourself for the thousandth time, “is this normal?” You’re not alone. More than 30 million Americans 40 and older live with the symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB). That’s about 1 in 10 people and as many as 40% of women in the United States. Yet many do not seek help from a physician for their symptoms. Rather, many continue to cope with the symptoms and navigate their lives around their symptoms of OAB. “People, both men and women, are reluctant to mention OAB concerns to their doctors; it’s embarrassing for them to discuss the topic,” said Dr. Cornelia Haag-Molkenteller, a clinically trained urologist and executive vice president and chief medical officer at Urovant Sciences, Inc. “Because of the stigma, many patients do not seek out medical treatments that are available to help manage the symptoms that have a limiting effect on their lives.”
Identifying an Overactive Bladder Condition
OAB is a common lower urinary tract or bladder health problem that can cause incontinence, which is the leaking of urine that cannot be controlled. Symptoms of OAB may include urgency, meaning a sudden need to urinate immediately; frequency, which is defined as urinating more than eight times per day; urge incontinence, or urine leakage following a sudden urge. There are many causes of OAB, including taking certain medications and being overweight. Your risk also increases if you have had a stroke or have Alzheimer’s disease.
Managing an Overactive Bladder
According to the American Urological Association, the first step in managing OAB is behavior modification. That means patients should talk with their health care providers to learn about the benefits of new habits, such as restricting fluid intake, reducing sodium and limiting alcohol consumption, for example. If changing some habits does not work, the next step is usually oral pharmacological therapies. A third option available if mediations don’t work are medical procedures to manage symptoms. If you think you may be experiencing symptoms of overactive bladder, talk to your doctor and ask for help managing the condition. You can also find more information at Urovant.com.
