Three terrific releases are featured in my column this week

Popular Creeps

Title: All Of This Will End In Tears (Big Stir Records)

You might like if you enjoy: The Strypes, The Replacements, The Plimsouls, Cheap Trick

Tell me more: Detroit-based rock outfit Popular Creeps has released the terrific album All Of This Will End In Tears, one of the last notable new releases of 2022. Popular Creeps’ hybrid of melodic songcraft and garage rock bite proves to be a winning formula across the fast-moving 11-track disc. There is an immediacy heard on the straightforward “Black & Blue,” “Gone By 45,” and “Wait & See” that bewitches with a single listen. Elsewhere the jangly “Window” and “Split Decision,” wistful “Keep It To Myself” (the latter

enhanced by stunning guitar work including an extended solo to cap the song’s rousing finale), countrified folk rocker

“Wait Forever,” punk rocker “Tear Me Apart” and emotional closer “Favorite Picture” add to the far-flung magic. The members of Popular Creeps (guitarist-vocalist Lenny Grassa, guitarist-vocalist Andrew Colvin, bassist Joe Heaphy and drummer Dave Nantais) have an obvious musical chemistry that is both impressive and palpable. Title: Lagoon (Sparkle Plenty Records/Deko Entertainment)

You might like if you enjoy: Big Star, Jason Falkner, Crowded House,

Pugwash, Bird Streets’ 2018 self-titled debut

Tell me more: Bird Streets — the moniker for singersongwriter John Brodeur — is back with the ambitious Lagoon. An album of luxurious and literate songs aimed at “separation, rumination, regret and recurrence,” the artistic scope of the dozen track collection is elevated by an incredible list of notable collaborators who guest on the project. Indeed, Brodeur’s considerable talents as lead singer and guitarist are bolstered by the likes of Aimee Mann, Jody Stephens (Big Star), Ed Harcourt, John Davis, and Buddy Judge (The Grays) along with the production skills of Patrick Sansone (Wilco), Michael Lockwood (Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple), and Zach Jones (Sting)

and Oscar Albis Rodriguez (A Great Big World). While the initial recording of Lagoon spanned from the earliest sessions in Nashville in 2019 through time at Ardent Studios in Memphis in February 2020, the sudden arrival of the COVID-19 global pandemic ultimately found Brodeur turning to Los Angelesbased producer Lockwood to work on the project via remote technology for the home stretch. Each and every song on Lagoon hits its mark; the confessional opener “Sleeper Agent,” emotive “The Document” (the latter one of the most striking breakup songs in memory), soaring “Let You Down,” haunting “Leave No Trace” (featuring Davis’ artful sitar playing), confessional “Disappearing Act” and Baroque pop sortie “Unkind” are among the wonderful songs on the masterful collection. Artist: New Riders of the Purple Sage Title: Lyceum ‘72 (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: The Grateful Dead, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Gram Parsons Tell me more: A magical trip

back 50 years awaits music fans who check out New Riders of the Purple Sage’s Lyceum ‘72, a previously unissued opening set from the last night of the Grateful Dead’s 1972 European Tour. New Riders of the Purple Sage — whose original lineup included several members of the Grateful Dead —shine across the 17-track concert recording that was recorded on a 16-track machine by Dead engineers Betty Cantor, Janet Furman, Bob Matthews, Rosie McGee and Wizard.

The quintet’s take on country music is infectious and many of the selections here are familiar beyond the Americana genre. The rowdy “Hello Mary Lou,” uptempo “Truck Drivin’ Man,” infectious “Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (And Loud, Loud Music)” and countrified take on The Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Women” are among the wonderful tracks on the disc. Lyceum ‘72 is available on audio CD and digital with packaging containing photographs and a reminiscence from Sam Cutler, tour manager of The Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead and New Riders of the Purple Sage. Governor Gavin Newsom convened a special session of the Legislature on Monday to consider his newly unveiled proposal to cap excess oil and gas profitsmoney he said comes from price gouging. According to Triple-A, gas in California is significantly higher than the national average.

Alexander Walker Griffin, vice mayor of the city of Hercules, praised the move.

“We’ve seen the recordbreaking prices at the pump, $6-, $7-a-gallon gas prices at our local gas stations, which is why we have to do something,” he said.

The oil and gas industry

cites multiple reasons for the price hikes, blaming reduced capacity at refineries due to maintenance, the state’s moves to phase out fossil fuels, and supply issues related to the war in Ukraine.

Igor Tregub, a Ukrainian immigrant who chairs the environmental caucus for the California Democratic Party, said the continued dependence on foreign oil is fueling Vladimir Putin’s war.

“The nerve of oil and gas corporations to use the war in my homeland to make exorbitant profits is inhumane. The Legislature must see this as a national security issue and get it done,” he said.

Heidi Harmon, former San Luis Obispo mayor, said the state needs to hold the fossil-fuel industry accountable - and plow excess profits into programs that mitigate the effects of global warming.

Finding Peace In Your HOA

The holiday season is upon us, and a traditional wish is for peace and goodwill. Let’s not only extend this wish to family and friends, but pursue “peace on earth and goodwill toward all” including one’s HOA neighbors.

Peace within HOAs is a wonderful wish indeed and greatly needed. HOA lawsuits deepen division, are costly, and rarely resolve the root problem.

Successful lawsuits do not bring HOAs peace or improve their governance. Peace and goodwill happen when volunteers bring commitment and a healthy service-oriented attitude. If a board is bad, elect a new board, because a judge cannot force a board (or a homeowner) to change. A judge only decides who wins the battle, not the war. So, lawsuits should be the very last resort after all other measures have failed.

Here are six ways to help spread peace and goodwill throughout the year.

Check Member Attitude: Do you refer to the HOA as

“they”? Because the association is you. Are you informed, and participating on committees or working groups? Do you take the time to become informed before announcing your opinions on board decisions?

Being part of a common interest community means that by purchase one joins a group of owners. This involves exchanging some independence for the shared benefits of HOA living.

Check Director Attitude: Is your attitude of service or one of control? Members are not employees or stockholders – they are neighbors. An understanding that one is a volunteer serving the community is less likely to foster conflict.

Do you listen or simply tolerate other points of view? Have you developed an environment in which directors can vote against the majority without being perceived as disloyal? Teamwork is not necessarily unanimity.

Check Your Actions: Before “going legal,” consider these questions.

Have you talked?

Sometimes sending a board representative to discuss a problem can resolve problems

before they get out of hand.

Is a lawyer letter really necessary? When attorneys join the discussion it escalates its intensity and it is harder to de-escalate. Before asking the HOA attorney to send off that “nasty-gram,” consider sending a letter from the board or manager requesting cooperation.

Check Your Assumptions: Avoid assuming your neighbor is a bad person - they simply might not understand their responsibilities as a co-owner in the community. HOA members often fight because they do not know their rights and responsibilities. Try giving people a chance to be

reasonable – they might be.

For example, many condominium owners do not know exclusive use areas are still common area and subject to HOA controls. It isn’t their fault that nobody told them otherwise. Good boards, managers, and lawyers should start by informing violators before assuming they don’t care, because maybe they just don’t know.

Learn Internal Dispute Resolution (“IDR”). HOAs must have “IDR” policies, in which board representatives meet with homeowners to try to resolve disputes. If everyone really tries and understands their responsibilities, that should resolve most disputes.

Become Educated: Encourage your neighbors to do the same. The Community

CA Pandemic Protections Held Line on Children’s Health Insurance

During 2021, the first year after the pandemic began, California managed to keep more than 96% of children insured, according to a new report from Georgetown University.

The authors credit a federal law that gave states extra money so no one would be dropped from Medicaid during COVID.

Joan Alker, executive director of the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, said the protections are slated to lapse when the national health emergency ends next spring. She predicted the national child uninsured rate could double.

“Three out of every four children that may lose Medicaid coverage will still be eligible,” Alker pointed out.

“Sometimes children lose coverage at Medicaid renewal

just because the letter gets lost in the mail. Families with limited English proficiency may have trouble successfully getting through the renewal process.”

Next spring, Medi-Cal will likely resume its annual re-evaluations of recipients’ eligibility. Alker argued that all states must launch a massive outreach campaign to ensure no eligible child is dropped. And parents need to make sure Medi-Cal has their correct address.

Mayra Alvarez, president of the Children’s Partnership, noted California’s most recent budget included money to keep all children on Medi-Cal continuously covered until age five, but there’s a catch.

“The state is not slated to implement that provision until 2025,” Alvarez stressed. “We’re urging the state to move as quickly as possible with those

protections, so our children don’t drop off the rolls.”

Nationally, the uninsured

2022 Holiday Shopping at Local Small Businesses Could Hit $88 Billion

The poll found that 80% of small business owners say this holiday season is more critical to their financial health than last year’s.

Diana Diaz, founder, and CEO of the Goddess Mercado and Queer Mercado in East Los Angeles, said she formed a collective so crafters could share a space, split the rent and support each other’s vision.

“I’m hearing a lot that we’re going to be impacted by the recession,” Diaz explained. “But I see many people are buying more crafty, local art. So, I must continue to work hard and promote our brands, cross-promote our efforts.”

In the survey, shoppers said they intend to spend 40% of their holiday budget at small businesses. And about 70% of small business owners predict increased sales this year compared to 2021, despite

having to fight the headwinds of rising costs, supply-chain delays, labor shortages, and the slowing economy.

Carolina Martinez, CEO of the California Association for Micro Enterprise Opportunity, said shopping at local small businesses is also more environmentally responsible.

“Going local to your Main Street helps the small business cut down on environmental waste associated with plastic packaging and shipping,” Martinez outlined. “And that reduces emissions and protects our waterways.”

A study by American Express found that 68 cents of every dollar spent in a local small business will stay in the local economy, compared to only 48 cents spent at large retail chains.

Millions of people in the United States use sharps to manage short-term or chronic conditions. Sharps are needles or devices that puncture the skin to dispense medication. However, disposal can confuse many existing sharps users and people using sharps for the first time, especially while traveling.

Holiday travel requires sharps users to be educated on local rules governing safe disposal.

A resource called SafetyIsThePoint.org helps people learn how to safely discard their used sharps and find disposal locations across

the United States. The website features a clickable map and ZIP code search that explains disposal rules by location to help travelers comply with local regulations, no matter where they are. Additionally, short videos explain sharps and how to manage their disposal at home and on the road.

Free printable resources, a step-by-step guide for at-home sharps disposal, and a disposal location finder in every state are available on the website for sharps users, health care providers, patient educators, and advocates. The resources can also be downloaded and sent to family members and

Welcome the World to Holiday Gatherings

The traditional dishes served year after year at your family’s holiday gatherings may bring comfort and a sense of nostalgia, but you can open your loved ones up to a whole new world by incorporating recipes from around the globe.

People of all different cultures across the Earth are often connected by food, whether it’s a classic holiday dish or a unique take on a traditional dish, like this raisin-infused Challah. While the dishes themselves may drastically differ, using similar ingredients can be a unifying thread.

For those looking to pull off worldly cuisines this holiday season, consider a familiar and nearly universal ingredient like raisins, an innovative and delicious addition incorporated in culturally diverse dishes. On top of their versatile flavor, Sun-Maid Raisins offer a betterfor-you whole fruit option with no added sugar per 1/4-cup serving.

Consider these global recipe ideas enjoyed at holiday gatherings around the world.

donated one Million dollars to 37 local Charities and Valley organizations this past November. That brought the donations to 64 Million dollars donated since the beginning of 1960. They are planning an even bigger anniversary event next year. He mentioned ticket sales are up and are excited to announce this year’s entertainers

- Gwen Stafani, Frontwoman of No Doubt, and Darius Rucker, Lead singer for Hootie and the Blowfish. Both are huge names in the music industry.

McCabe did a phone interview with Brandon Steele. Steele spoke about his plans, game, and how he learned to listen to his coach and caddie. He talked about how he is familiar with the Desert as he has been here often to play and visits here often. Steele

spoke about LIV golf and his take on it. He said he felt no hard feelings for the players who play in the LIV tournaments and knows why some have gone there. However, he said he didn’t feel they should play on the PGA tour.

Media got a chance to play the Stadium Course to witness the condition and difficulty of the course. The sand traps are deep, and there is a lot of water to cross with a good drive. I was lucky to play with good golfers as our team placed, and each player won a hundred-dollar gift card. Local dignitaries from PGA West, LaQuinta golf course, and LaQuinta Mayor Linda Evens attended. Tickets are available online at www.theamexgolf.com.

The tournament will be played at the PGA West Stadium Course, the Nicklaus Tournament Course, and the LaQuinta Country Club on Jan.19-22.

More than just a hotel, the innovative Four Seasons Hotel Minneapolis is elevating winter fun to the next level – the top level. I heard about the hotel’s Nordic Village at Riva Terrace, backlit by the Minneapolis skyline, from my Minneapolis cousins and arranged for them to tour this unique high-rise but rustic hideaway amid a major American metropolis. Morissa Hamburger and daughter Jayme were swept away by the view, which in the evening is framed by the city’s dramatic, illuminated skyscrapers, making for a striking scene that has to be seen to be believed, reported mother and daughter.

The Four Seasons Hotel Minneapolis unveiled the Nordic Village at Riva Terrace on December 1, 2022. This winter wonderland is replete with private cabins – intimate

dining rooms for a party’s fourcourse meal, a curling lane, and a fire table lounge. This seasonal dining experience will be open for dinners and private events through March 4, 2023.

Guests can also enjoy Mara, the Mediterraneanmeets-Minneapolis destination restaurant helmed by renowned Chef Gavin Kaysen, which is celebrating the season with special menus for Christmas and New Year’s.

And evolving with the changing seasons, The Spa celebrates wintertime with a Spaliday Soiree. While you can view snow-covered downtown Minneapolis from the Spa, you can warm up gently with one of the therapeutic massages on their spa menu. Firebirds finally get to skate on their own Ice at the Acrisure Arena

The new hockey Team, The Firebirds, got to skate on the Arena Ice for the first time on Monday, Dec. 12. They have been practicing for road games, but this is the first time the team has been on the Acrisure Arena ice here. You could hear the excitement when they were giving interviews to the press. The coach and a few players spoke to the press. The AHL is a learning and training ground for players to excel and move up to the NHL teams. The youngest Firebird player is only 20, and the oldest is 32. The team so far has an excellent win record. The team is getting to know each other more during the long bus rides from one road game to another. This is a dream come true for the players. Player Tye Kartye

said he fell in love with hockey when he went to games with his Dad at 4 or 5 years old. Players said they like to play golf in their off time. The Valley is great for that.

Tim Leiweke and Seattle Kraken CEO Tod Leiweke told them how this dream came true. This Arena is fantastic and a marvel of construction. After a quick tour of the Arena, we were told that the whole parking lot would be covered in solar eventually. It will take care of all the electrical needs.

It will take time as they have to buy a 25 million dollar storage unit. They told me how the dream got started. Acrisure Arena will bring so much to the Desert. Hockey will be introduced to 1000s kids. Kids will no longer have to play street hockey as they will have a real ice rink. It will be a yearround facility for our youth.

They said that the shows have all sold out so far. This Arena will bring so much to the Valley. Not just for locals,

visitors, and snowbirds but for people across the riverside county and beyond. I must say that both men looked so

proud of the Arena, The team, the entertainment, and all that they will bring to make our Valley such a special place.

Latin Trailblazers Legado 7 to Perform at Morongo

The well-loved norteño group known for embracing the “lumbre corridos” style will perform its most popular hits at Morongo on December 10.

Morongo Casino Resort & Spa – The popular Latin group Legado 7 will perform its most popular hits of the norteño genre to the Morongo Grand Ballroom on Saturday, December 10.

Formed in Orange County, California, by singer Alexander Guerra and accordionist Ramon Ruiz. Legado 7 praises the carefree “stoner” lifestyle in most of its songs, which created what’s now known as the “Lumbre Corridos” style (translated as “Blazing Corridos) to describe their favorite song subject, marijuana.

The bands include popular hits include “Ojos de Maniaco” (“Maniac Eyes,” 2017), “Cupcake Quemando” (“Burning Cupcake,” 2019), and “En El Humaderon” (In The Smokehouse,” 2018), among others.

Legado 7’s style and topical focus have earned them several weeks atop the Latin streaming charts and millions of impressions online whenever new songs or music videos are released. Most notably, their work was recognized in 2017 by the legendary rapper Snoop Dogg.

“We are very excited to host the creative Legado 7 at Morongo,” said Simon Farmer, Morongo’s Executive Director of Marketing. “Their work is unique in the norteño genre, and it’s always a blast to see them perform live.”

Walk of the Stars Palm Springs to Honor Jose Julio Sarria

Palm Springs, CA

– Walk of the Stars Palm Springs will honor Jose Julio Sarria with the 453rd Star on the Walk of the Stars Palm Springs. The Star will be unveiled at Downtown Palm Springs Park on Monday, December 12th, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. The Star Dedication Ceremony is open to the public.

“The Chamber is honored to host the star ceremony for Jose Julio Sarria, giving him the 453rd star,” said Palm Springs Chamber CEO Nona Watson.

Jose Julio Sarria was a singer, an activist, an empress, a World War II Veteran, and a political candidate. Specifically, he was dubbed the Nightingale of Montgomery Street for his “operas” at the Black Cat Café from 1949-1963; was the first out political candidate for public office in 1961; and was the founder

Fedex Driver Kidnaps And Kills Athena (7)

For Maitlyn Gandy (26), a mother’s worst nightmare has come true ...

Her little Athena (7) was kidnapped and killed by a FedEx courier from her nursery on Wednesday. The girl was living with her father in Paradise (US state of Texas) when Tanner Horner (31) showed up at her door with a package.

The FedEx driver took the girl into his custody. But, according to the police, Athena was dead

barely an hour later.

But days of cruel uncertainty dawned on the little girl’s family. Athena’s stepmother reported the girl missing as late as Wednesday. Countless neighbors in the small town of 522 residents combed the area while police investigated.

The trail quickly led to Tanner Horner. “We knew from the beginning of the investigation that a FedEx driver had made a delivery in front of the

house shortly before Athena disappeared.” The 31-yearold was questioned and confessed to everything.

On Friday, he showed investigators where he had buried her body. A court set bail for him at $1.5 million.

“My emotions are a wreck, and I’ve been trying to pull myself together. (...) The fi ght is far from over. I just want my children, and I know I will never be whole again,” Gandy wrote on Facebook after the death of her Athena.

of the International Imperial Court System, the oldest and largest international LGBTQ+ organization. In 1996, Sarria made his way to Palm Springs, where he resided for nearly a decade before his death in 2013.

Shortly before his death, the San Francisco Pride Board created the Jose Julio Sarria History Makers Award to honor the LGBTQ+ community who make newsworthy accomplishments. Postdeath, he was honored on the Rainbow Honor Walk in San Francisco. In addition, he was one of the inaugural fifty American “pioneers, trailblazers, and heroes” inducted on the National LGBTQ Wall of Honor within the Stonewall National Monument at the Stonewall Inn in New York City.

“I am so excited to see Jose enshrined in the Walk of Stars. As the ‘mother’ of the gay community, he gave birth to a political

movement as well as an entire community while teaching us how to live our authentic lives as equal members of our society,” said Gene Brake, Founder, and Chair of the Jose Sarria Foundation. “As Jose neared the end of his life, he feared people wouldn’t remember his contributions, and many of us committed to making sure that wouldn’t happen. This helps make good on that commitment, and the Star’s location near his favorite actress Marilyn Monroe is perfect. I think he would be proud.”

For more information, contact nwatson@ pschamber.org or call the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce at (760) 325-1577.

Since 1992, the Walk of the Stars Palm Springs has honored over 450 celebrities and local personalities on one of the world’s most famous sidewalks.

For many people who wish to work toward a healthier weight, one of the greatest obstacles is figuring out where to begin.

These tips from SlimFast consultant and registered dietitian Maryann Walsh show it doesn’t take a drastic lifestyle overhaul to make an impact.

Eat Mindfully

Many people who struggle with their weight benefit from being more conscious about what they’re eating and why. For example, consider your eating habits, such as eating even when you’re not hungry whether that’s because it’s mealtime and you think you should eat, you’re satisfying a craving or using a tasty snack to cope with stress.

Recognizing why you’re eating is an important step toward correcting destructive eating patterns, but so is paying attention to the other details of the eating experience, including what you eat and how it makes you feel. Ultimately, this may allow you to choose healthier foods that nourish

your body for the long-term, rather than the brief satisfaction that comes with less nutritious choices.

Consider Intermittent Fasting

One weight-loss method many people find success using is intermittent fasting, which involves abstaining from all food and beverages for a specified time period each day or week. While going too long without food can sometimes lead to excess hunger then overeating later, in shorter, controlled fasting timeframes one can often more easily achieve a caloric deficit, which is required for weight loss.

Prepare for your fasting phase by choosing foods that support satiety.

Options like SlimFast’s Intermittent Fasting line of meal bars and protein shakes can help avoid a sense of deprivation with tasty flavors like the Vanilla Cupcake Snack Shake Mix and Vanilla Almond Crunch Complete Meal Bar. The shake mixes deliver 15 grams of slow-digesting protein, compared to whey protein, to help curb hunger, along with more than

20 vitamins and minerals. The meal bars clock in with 15 grams of protein and 10 grams of fiber.

Manage Stress

When you’re stressed, your body produces cortisol, which also raises insulin and can drive hunger and trigger cravings for comfort foods. In fact, that’s the very reason people tend to overeat when they’re under pressure. Light exercise and meditative practices can help you manage your mental strain. You might also consider talk therapy with a friend or professional or spend time unwinding with a book or music.

Get Proper Sleep

Poor sleep habits affect your weight in numerous ways. One is that when you’re feeling tired, your hunger and satiety hormones, ghrelin and leptin, can be affected, leading to an increase in caloric intake and subsequent weight gain. Additionally, when you’re tired, you’re more likely to take shortcuts like skipping workouts or opting for unhealthy convenience

3 Tips for Intermittent Fasting

If you’re new to the idea of intermittent fasting, these tips can help you find greater success so you can see results.

Track Eating and Exercise

When you’re not paying attention to what you eat and how you move, you may not even realize how your habits are affecting your health. Logging what you eat, especially if you use a tool like an app that helps you see the nutrition breakdown, may give you a
