Christmas Tidbits to Put You in the Holiday Spirit
By Desert Star Staff The holiday season has arrived, and millions of people across the globe will be celebrating Christmas with their families and friends. The following are some interesting tidbits to share with your loved ones this holiday season. • Each year, more than three billion Christmas cards are sent in the United States alone. • In 350 AD, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the official celebration date for the birth of Jesus Christ. Many historians and theologians have surmised that Christ really wasn’t born this time of year, thanks to imagery and information from the Bible.

• Christmas carols began as an English custom called “wassailing.” Individuals toasted neighbors to a long and healthy life. • Despite the common tale that three wise men paid homage to baby Jesus, the Bible never specifically calls out a number. Similarly, there’s no specific indication that they visited the infant Jesus. Their visit may have occurred when Jesus was older. • Santa Claus’ modern look was inspired by writings from The Knickerbockers of New York and imagery from Clement Clarke Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Moore denied authoring the famous poem for 15 years after it was published anonymously, feeling the poem was beneath his talents. • Santa has his own official postal code. It’s H0 H0 H0. • The song “Jingle Bells” was originally written for Thanksgiving and not Christmas. People loved it so much that the lyrics were changed to fit Christmas. • Christmas trees typically grow for 15 years before they’re cut and sold. This means the trees sold today were likely planted in 1999. • Christmas was not declared an official holiday in the United States until June 26, 1870. • Before turkey, the traditional Christmas meal
served in England was a pig’s head and mustard. • Male reindeer tend to shed their antlers in the winter. This means Santa’s reindeer are likely female. • Christ may have been born in a cave rather than a manger. According to the gospel of Luke, the shepherds that helped find shelter for Mary to give birth kept their flock in a cave. The Church
of the Nativity in Bethlehem is built over a cave called the Grotto of the Nativity, where Jesus is believed to have been born. • Many people may be less inclined to stand under mistletoe waiting for a kiss if they knew what “mistletoe” means in the ancient Germanic language. It literally means “dung on a twig,” for the bird who eats the
berries and then leaves seeds in droppings to propagate new plants. • Each holiday season, PNC Wealth Management calculates the costs of the gifts in the song, “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The price index for the gifts went from $12,673 in 1984 to more than $24,000 in 2011. The most expensive gift is the swimming swans. HL14C762
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Hi Kelly, [Apologies to Clement Clarke Moore] ‘Twas the night before the HOA’s Christmas, when all through the community Not a complaint was to be heard, all appeared to be in unity; The thank-you notes were placed by the bulletin board with care, In hopes that the manager would soon see them there; The homeowners were nestled all snug in their beds, Not worried about decks or roofs or flowerbeds; And the Vice President in her condo, and I in mine too, Had just settled down for a
break from serving all of you, When out in the courtyard there arose such a clatter, I sprang to my balcony to see what was the matter. Away to the railing I flew like a flash, Only to see several neighbors with complaints to rehash. I couldn’t figure in the dark of the night Exactly what they decided gave them the right, But I knew from my term on the homeowners board, Our meetings these neighbors had always ignored, Then in a flash I noticed a visitor, Who tried to join the group of inquisitors He wore a red fur coat over an ample belly, and His hearty laugh made it shake as it were jelly, His smile quickly faded as they all turned away, They told him that tenants had nothing to say, The jolly man disappeared as quickly as he came here, Amid the sound of eight snorting… reindeer? In a moment further came another, without much ado, From where he came no one knew,
I knew in a flash it was our manager, Nick. He knew what was needed and how to bring it quick, He exclaimed “Now, Member! now, Neighbor, now, Bylaws and Covenant, Please read the documents before bringing your comment. Now back to your homes, and back to your castles, Please just for today have a cease to the hassles” He said “you by choice bought in a community, And it works at its best when all work in unity, Consider that your board serves you all for free, and consider joining a committee or three. “Remember your community thrives when all work as a team, If all think only of self, the project a nightmare it will seem. Your association it works much like a large rowboat, if one rows toward elsewhere not for long will it float.” Amidst headshakes and handshakes the courtyard did clear, But I was sure that above still flew a sleigh and eight impatient reindeer. No reindeer or jolly elf returned to our roofs that night But people reached out to
neighbors and began treating them right. A different air began to dominate our complex As the Golden Rule had quickly become our text. Manager Nick surveyed the scene, pleased, Knowing the group a happy value had it seized. And laying his finger aside of his face, He ran toward his car as if in a race; He sprang to his car, heading home in a dash, And away he drove as quick as a flash. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOODNIGHT! [Readers: Merry Christmas, and may peace and neighborliness permeate your communities in the coming year!]

‘Birdman,’ ‘Budapest’ Top Critics’ Choice Noms By LINDSEY BAHR AP Film Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) “Birdman,” ‘’Boyhood” and a host of now regulars on the awards circuit were among the top films listed in the 20th Critics’ Choice Movie Awards nominations Monday, but it was Wes Anderson’s darkly whimsical “The Grand Budapest Hotel” that surprised with 11 nominations. In addition to nods for the film, the direction, the script and the cinematography, star Ralph Fiennes was also recognized in two acting categories: best actor and best actor in a comedy. Though beloved by critics
and a box office success, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” was seen as a dark horse in the awards race due in part to its March release date. But after earning four Golden Globe nominations last week, the quirky film could be rising in awards stature as Hollywood awaits the start of Oscar nominations voting. “Birdman” scored the most nominations, though, with 13 in categories such as best picture and best director. Lead Michael Keaton and his co-stars Emma Stone and Edward Norton all scored acting nods as well. The dark showbiz comedy also recently earned the most
nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Golden Globe Awards. Richard Linklater’s 12year film “Boyhood” got eight nominations, including best picture, director, best supporting actor and actress for Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette, and best ensemble. The Broadcast Film Critics Association also recognized “Gone Girl,” ‘’The Imitation Game,” ‘’Selma,” ‘’The Theory of Everything,” ‘’Nightcrawler,” ‘’Unbroken” and “Whiplash” with multiple nominations, including best picture. For the most part, the major
acting nominees matched that of the recent awards nominations including Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Imitation Game”), Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”), Reese Witherspoon (“Wild”) and Julianne Moore (“Still Alice”). Notably, Angelina Jolie, whose “Unbroken” was shut out of Globes nominations, picked up a best directing nod here in addition to Ava DuVernay (“Selma”) and David Fincher (“Gone Girl”). The Critics’ Choice Awards have a solid track record of matching the eventual best picture Oscar winner. They also
honor achievements in genre films including action, comedy and sci-fi/horror, and include categories such as best young actor and actress, allowing for movies such as “Edge of Tomorrow,” ‘’22 Jump Street” and “The Babadook” to sneak into the mix. Awards will be presented live from Hollywood on Jan. 15. Jessica Chastain, Kevin Costner and Ron Howard will all receive special awards during the ceremony, hosted by “Live with Kelly and Michael’s” Michael Strahan.

Over and Out: TV Flops, Exits and Endings in 2014
By FRAZIER MOORE AP Television Writer NEW YORK (AP) - Along with its triumphs, the world of TV had its share of setbacks in 2014. Here’s a sample: • “How I Met Your Mother” Concludes: This long-running CBS sitcom met few viewers’
expectations for a slam-bang finish. Its big reveal - naming the titular “your mother” after nine years of teasing - yielded a finale only slightly less tangled than the ending of “Lost.” And even “Lost” resisted the temptation to include a blue French horn in its wrap-up. • David Gregory Exits “Meet

For Fox (and the human race) “Utopia” swiftly proved to be a dream unfulfilled. • “Peter Pan Live!” It proposed a bold counter-theory for the space-time continuum. It argued for eternal youth in a realm only accessible by fairy dust-assisted human flight. Unfortunately, NBC’s live production of this time-honored musical never managed to take off. MURDER CHARGES FILED AGAINST LA QUINTA TEEN Continued from Page 1 The chase started on eastbound Interstate 10 around 2:50 p.m. Thursday when a deputy stopped a stolen Mercedes-Benz sedan and recognized Knigge, a passenger, as a burglary suspect. The driver then sped off, leading deputies on a pursuit that ended near Ramon Road and Cathedral Canyon Drive. The car was involved in five crashes before colliding with another vehicle and coming to a stop, sheriff’s officials said.
Knigge was injured by a sheriff’s K-9 dog while being taken into custody and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Also arrested were the driver, a 17-year-old Beaumont boy, and a second passenger, a 16-year-old girl from Palm Desert. Their names were withheld because they are juveniles. Two people in other vehicles struck by the Mercedes were taken to hospitals for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries.

Be a ‘Sweet’ Holiday Host This Year By Desert Star Staff Festive holiday parties are a winter staple. But how do you put a twist on the annual tradition? To add new flavor and excitement to your holiday gathering this year, consider incorporating a series of sweet surprises to delight your guests. The Perfect Pairing: You’re probably familiar with the concept of pairing appetizers and entrées with the perfect wines, but you may not realize that it’s just as important for your sweet treats! If you’re serving a particularly sweet candy such as peanut brittle, pair it with a stout beer for the perfect complement. And if you’ve chosen a rich, indulgent chocolate for your guests, consider pairing with an equally bold Cabernet Sauvignon so the wine can stand up to the flavor of the chocolate. Keep Pets Happy and Healthy This Holiday Season
By Desert Star Staff The holiday season can mean new routines, new décor and new foods in your home. While these temporary changes can be exciting for people, they can be hazardous to pets. “The extended holiday season is no excuse to take a vacation from being a great pet parent,” says Dr. Jeff Werber, Hollywood’s Vet to the Stars. Keeping your dog happy and healthy this holiday season is easy, Werber says. He is sharing some seasonal tips. • Keep curious pets focused: Most pets will be curious about the tinsel, ornaments and ribbons of the season. Since most decorations are not pet-friendly, keep them beyond reach and take necessary precautions and keep your pets focused on something they truly enjoy. If your dog begs at the table every night, chances are they’ll be begging at the holiday dinner table. With new people over and different kinds of food falling to the floor, it’ll be important to prevent distractions during dinner. Use healthy treats, such
as Greenies, as a training tool to keep your dog away from guests’ dinner plates. • Give recognizable gifts: A whopping 85 percent of pet parents buy their dog a holiday present, according to the 2014 Greenies: Dog Owners Survey. In order for your pet to be as thrilled about their stocking as you are, give them the same treat before the holiday -- so that it’s more familiar and better received. This year, consider giving a gift that promotes good health. While nearly half of all dog owners have turned away from a kiss from a dog because of its bad breath, more than a quarter say they don’t brush their dog’s teeth at all. And bad breath isn’t just unpleasant; it can be a sign of poor dental health or dental disease. Consider giving your dog a dental chew that carries the Veterinary Oral Health Council Seal of Acceptance for control of plaque and tartar, such as Greenies Canine Dental Chews. They are the number one veterinarian-recommended dental chews and are available in special Season’s Greenies

HOROSCOPES ARIES
As an intelligent light is focused on all outer aspects of your life you wonder who you are in the larger society. Examining your purpose, standing and reputation you also ask what is your direction and how you’re progressing. It’s possible you will be sought out for honors, observed as a mentor, given tasks and projects of leadership and power. Tend to them carefully, using intentions for Goodwill and intelligent love in all endeavors. You can then lead others to the light.
TAURUS New experiences, meeting people from different regions, perhaps by phone, email or conference calling, are broadening your horizons. You might consider giving, creating or attending a new course of study that’s intellectually disciplined, practical and purposeful. New routines should be established so a new understanding of time emerges. For guidance, investigate laws concerning a new endeavor and ponder upon the new Aquarian Laws & Principles.

wellness and health, money and resources. Your inner self is being expanded through unusual activities occurring in your daily life. Are you caring for others? Your beliefs are shifting leading to a deeper self-inquiry into money, resources, relationships and psychological healing. Maintain your tender care.
CANCER As you interact and work closely with others, you understand more about yourself. You’ll discover how you unconsciously make decisions affecting your actions. This leads a deeper aware of choices, hidden agendas, resentments and expectations. With awareness comes change and a light shed upon the value within all relationships. Begin to have intentions for Goodwill in all interactions.

VIRGO Perhaps you feel an unusual happiness, expressing yourself, setting priorities, seeking amusement, fun and play. If not, then begin. It may take effort completing daily responsibilities. Finish them early so your day is free. Caring for children, pets, a garden, creates joy and happiness. In all endeavors, you’re more creative, imaginative, artistic, resourceful and inspired. Applause.
LIBRA Your personal life and people you intimately relate with are your focus. You seek a firm foundation, things familiar, reason and purpose to build the future. Much of your attention now must be focused inward to assess values (what do you value?) and recognize psychologically what you need. Events from the past are remembered, affecting you deeply. Examining the truth of this past is most important. It’s not what you think.
SCORPIO Observe your interactions with others and how you handle relationships. Are there communications and habits of thinking that enhance or undermine your effectiveness?
Do you pour out all your energy? It’s most important to listen carefully to what others are saying. There’s an alchemy (magic) in listening. Creating spiritual dew within the heart that assuages loneliness. Confusion ceases.
SAGITTARIUS Make a list of all resources in your life, physical and spiritual, and assess their value. You often seek to express yourself through non-material resources. Therefore a list of them is of value. Knowing more about yourself provides you with greater control psychologically. On the other hand, it might be time for a party celebrating your successes and resources, which give others fun, amusement and pleasure. Serve artful foods and drinks.
CAPRICORN It’s time to renew yourself for the New Year, to withdraw somewhat from the world, turning inward, into the darkness where, under the new light of Winter Solstice, new ideas form. This is not a selfish act, but one born from future needs. While in the world be sensitive to others. If relationships problems arise, resolve conflicts by calling upon the Soul’s help. The answer lies in what is the good for the whole and of greatest service. And how it comforts you.
AQUARIUS Align (visualize this) your thoughts, words and actions. It’s important to be aware if several messages are being projected simultaneously from you to the world. You or others could be acting out unresolved childhood behaviors. Ponder on this. As the year ends review and reflect upon the past year. When feeling peaceful and quiet plan the New Year. It should be more comforting, kinder and more prosperous than last year. Reflect on what you need?
PISCES You’re recognizing the value of friendships and other close and important relationships. This assessment relates to your present life purpose and the visions and ideals you hope to manifest. Cooperate with others who are like-minded. Also, quietly observe others. Those you are attracted to reflect many different aspects of yourself. Cultivate these friends. It will be within a group that your ideals, hopes and visions manifest. Love more. divided between seven victims. Seated in a wheelchair, Williams apologized to the victims and his own family. “I am 100% determined that I will never again make those mistakes,’’ he said. Williams was apprehended by Mexican authorities in the resort city of Playa del Carmen in the state of Quintana Roo in June 2013 -- a day after he was added to the FBI’s list of Ten Most Wanted fugitives. Williams taught anthropology, gender studies and history at USC for about 20 years until his resignation in February 2011. Under the guise of academic research, he traveled in the Philippines and elsewhere in Southeast Asia to have sex with underage boys, according to the FBI, which reported having identified 10 victims between ages 9 and 17. In 2010, prior to his travel, Williams initiated webcam sex sessions with two boys ages 13 and 14 and expressed a desire to visit them in the Philippines. While in the Philippines the next year, he engaged in sex acts with both boys, as well as a 15-year-old, and took sexually explicit photos of one of them, court papers show. Williams fled Los Angeles about a week after returning from the Philippines, after he was December 17, 2014
questioned by the FBI. In June 2013, a USC attorney provided the FBI with material Williams had donated to the university’s gay and lesbian archives which contained “lascivious visual depictions of minors,’’ according to papers filed in federal court. LAPD Assistant Chief Michel Moore said the case came to light about three years ago, when a Los Angeles resident concerned about the safety of children contacted authorities. Moore said “there are other victims who have suffered by this man’s actions.’’ Before the arrest, the FBI received information about a possible location for Williams and asked Mexican authorities to apprehend him. Williams pleaded guilty in September before U.S. District
Judge Philip S. Gutierrez to one federal count of engaging in illicit sexual contact in foreign places. Richard L. Arlington, a 73-year-old onetime Palm Springs roommate of Williams’, was arrested last year in connection with the case. Arlington, who shared illicit computer images of children with Williams, pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography and will be sentenced Dec. 22. The FBI said Williams has lived in Indonesia, Polynesia and Thailand. Williams and Arlington were both members of the Buddhist Universal Association in Los Angeles, which espoused an ideology of “extreme sexual freedoms,’’ according to the FBI.

Resolve to Learn More about Wine in 2015 By Desert Star Staff Have you always wanted to learn about wine? In 2015, consider expanding your knowledge of wine as a great New Year’s resolution. Christopher Silva, CEO of St. Francis Winery in Sonoma, CA, offers the following tips for wine newbies and enthusiasts alike to get started on getting to know wine better in 2015: • Join a club. A wine club, either through specifically one winery or company that features an international selection, is a great way to have a variety of hand-picked, quality wines delivered to your doorstep. Whether you decide to stick with one varietal or try many, a wine club can cater to your wishes or help you expand your horizons wisely. • Take notes. Sipping on some vino? Record your impressions of the flavors in a “wine diary.” Remember to clear your palate first with something neutral, such as crackers. You’ll know whether to revisit the wine in the future, as well as learn to become more mindful of what you’re drinking. • Seek variety. For a broad
overview of wine, it’s important to become familiar with the major varietals, which for white wines include Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and for red wines, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfadel. Here are three new wines to try this year: Versatile as an aperitif or with a variety of seafood and light meats, St. Francis Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc 2013 is a refreshing vintage wine with a clean, crisp structure and aromas of citrus, kiwi and mango with a touch of lime. Next up, St. Francis Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 has a rich, complex flavor and body. The wine’s firm structure, generous tannins and depth of color complement classic aromas and flavors of black currant, cassis, dusty cocoa and tobacco. This wine is an excellent companion to aged blue cheese, braised or grilled beef and roast pork with fruit. Looking for an American classic? Try Zinfandel and St. Francis Sonoma County Old Vines Zinfandel 2012, which is made from dry farmed old vines to ensure concentrated flavor. Aromas of boysenberry, clove
and cinnamon are followed by flavors of mixed berries, red licorice, tobacco leaf and mulling spices. Pair with barbecued ribs and pasta Bolognese. • Travel. Go right to the source and consider planning a trip to wine country. Many vineyards host tours, have tasting rooms
and offer education programs. A winery is also a great place to find top notch wine pairings. For example, the St. Francis` Wine & Food Pairing program, awarded the “Number One Restaurant in America” by OpenTable, is a seated, multicourse pairing hosted by wine experts. Find out

A ‘Wicked’ List for Holiday Fun
Photo by Joan Marcus Emma Hunton Photo by Joan Marcus Happy Holidays to you, dear readers. With so many holidays just around the corner, here are some suggestions for festive fun on stage, screen and DVD. A wickedly good theatre idea is “Wicked” which has taken up residence at the Hollywood Pantages. If you don’t see the show for Christmas or Chanukah, this high-flying production can be a delightful Valentine surprise since this Broadway ‘phenom’ will stay in town ‘until March 15, 2015. The show, back by popular demand, is all about what actually happened in Oz before Dorothy literally dropped in. It starts by telling the story of two girls, Elphaba and Glinda. The former was born with emerald-green skin. She is brilliant, but by no
means well-liked. The other is pert, pretty, ambitious and about as popular as you can get. (In fact, fact “Popular” is the title of one of the songs in the show.) “Wicked,” with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman, is based on the novel by Gregory Maguire and is currently playing all around the world in nine locations. It has been seen by more than 42 million people across the globe, so don’t miss out on the fun. For tickets or more information about the Los Angeles engagement of “Wicked,” visit the official website for the Hollywood Pantages Theatre at www. HollywoodPantages.com.
and let’s face it, who doesn’t; you won’t want to miss Noel Cowards “Blithe Spirit” at the Ahmanson Theatre through January 18. The show co-stars Charles Edwards of TVs “Downton Abbey.” The entire cast is absolutely smashing, but on opening night, while everyone got cheers, Angela got a thunderously enthusiastic standing ovation as the entire audience leaped to their feet to honor her spry, wry, delightful performance. It is hard to believe she is 89 years young—she is totally amazing and so is this production.

the Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. “Salute to Vienna,” a New Year’s Concert, celebrates the music of Strauss’s waltzes and operetta arias and features the talents of European singers, dancers and a full orchestra. For tickets call 1-800-745-3000. Tickets also available through ticketmaster.com. In December, movie choices are at their best. It seems as though Hollywood puts most of their major, artistic films out at almost the same time in order to be nominated when the Oscars roll around. This year is no exception. One special film, opening on Christmas Day, is “Into the Woods,” a fantastic fairytale adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical. The all-star cast, headed by Meryl Streep as the witch, includes James Corden as the Baker, Emily Blunt as his wife and Johnny Depp in the role of the wolf. (My review will be coming soon.) Also opening on Christmas day, “Unbroken,“ Angelina Jolie’s tribute to Louis Zamperini, a reallife American hero. Louis gained fame as an Olympic athlete who competed in Hitler’s Berlin Olympics. His story also deals with his WWII war experiences, shining a light on his endurance under terrible circumstances. He not only survived being adrift from sea and imprisonment in a Japanese prison camp, he was able to forgive the unforgivable. His resilient spirit kept him alive though the war, and his outgoing spirit kept him afloat for 97 years. “Foxcatcher” is another fine dramatic choice. Steve Carell is a excellent comedy actor who bursts onto the screen in full force as “The 40 Year Old Virgin.” Then
he kept us smiling in TVs “The Office,” but in “Foxcatcher,” he takes on a totally different persona playing the eccentric billionaire John Du Pont. This change in acting style could land him an Academy Award nomination.

If you want to curl up with a good DVD, here are two titles now out on DVD. A blast from the past is Frank Capra’s “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” starring James Stewart in the title role and Jean Arthur. This year marks the 75th anniversary of this remarkable movie, which celebrates America and American government at its best. Ah, Mr. Smith, we sure could use someone like you today. The freshly released DVD is filled with plenty of bonus extras that include commentary by Capra’s son, Frank Capra Jr. and “ Frank Capra’s American Dream: a feature-length documentary hosted by Ron Howard,” plus much more.

For a touch of romance check out the newly released “Magic in the Moonlight,” written and directed by Woody Allen. The film stars Oscar’s winner Colin Firth as Stanley Crawford, an acclaimed magician who is a skeptic when it comes to the supernatural. Things start to change when he meets Sophie Baker (Emma Stone), a psychic and stunning seductress. He’s out to prove her wrong. Will he? Or will he fall in love? capublicnotice.com NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF: MORRIS GARFIN CASE NO. INP1400751 To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both of MORRIS GARFIN. A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by BRENDA L. SHINGLETON. in the Superior Court of California, County of RIVERSIDE. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that BRENDA L. SHINGLETON be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: JANUARY 12, 2015 at 8:45AM in Dept. 1A located at 46200 Oasis Street, Indio, CA 92201. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 730-2727 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site - www.servicelinkASAP. com - for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case: 120073. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-573-1965 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site www.priorityposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case . Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. Navajos Buy Back Artifacts at Disputed Auction By THOMAS ADAMSON Associated Press PARIS (AP) - The largest Native American tribe in the American Southwest won its bid Monday to buy back seven sacred masks at a contested auction of tribal artifacts in Paris that netted over a million dollars. The objects for sale at the Drouot auction house included religious masks, colored in pigment, that are believed to have been used in Navajo wintertime healing ceremonies but that generally are disassembled and returned to the earth once the nine-day ceremonies conclude. The sale went ahead despite efforts by the U.S. government and Arizona’s congressional delegation to halt it. The sales at the auction which totaled 929,000 euros ($1.12 million) - also included dozens of Hopi kachina dolls
and several striking Pueblo masks embellished with horse hair, bone and feathers, thought to be from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Associated Press is not transmitting images of the objects because both the Navajo and Hopi have strict rules against recording and photographing ceremonies featuring the items that otherwise are kept entirely out of public view. The Navajo Nation initially included a photo of the masks in a news release but later retracted it, saying it was a mistake. The Hopi tribe considers it sacrilegious for any of the images of the objects to appear. The U.S. Embassy in Paris had asked Drouot to suspend the sale to allow Navajo and Hopi representatives to determine if they were stolen from the tribes. But Drouot refused, arguing that
the auction was in accordance with the law - and that a French tribunal had previously ruled that a similar sale was legal. Navajo Nation Vice President Rex Lee Jim said the objects were not art but “living and breathing beings” that should not be traded commercially. Jim, a medicine man who traveled to Paris for the auction with three other Navajo officials, said they were unable to determine the exact provenance of the artifacts but said they had to face the reality of the auction and buy them back. “They are sacred masks ... and unfortunately they end up here. Whether that is legal or illegal ... we don’t know. What we do know is that they are for sale,” Jim said. The Navajo Nation representatives bid for seven masks at the auction, winning
them for $9,120 despite a bidding war with a private collector. French art collector Armand Hui bid for several masks but told the AP he backed down when he saw that tribal members had come in person buy them. “I wanted to respect that,” he said. The approaches of the Hopi and Navajo, whose reservations neighbor each other in the northeastern corner of Arizona, are different in that the Hopi people see the sale as sacrilege and did not travel to Paris for the auction, said Pierre ServanSchreiber, a lawyer representing the Hopis. The Hopi tribe has said that only a member of the tribe has the right to possess the items that embody the spirits of their ancestors. “Hopis were opposed to buying back their artifacts as they did not want to engage in
the auction,” Servan-Schreiber said. Hopi Chairman Herman Honanie said he was appalled by the latest sale. Navajo Nation spokesman Deswood Tome said it would be incumbent upon the leaders of the Navajo and Hopi tribes to discuss how to approach any future sales of sacred items in foreign countries. “If there are religious items that are sacred in the future, the leadership will have to determine what steps they will take,” said Tome. “Buying these masks here today is a precedent that we’ve set.” Thomas Adamson can be followed at Twitter.com/ ThomasAdamsonAP Oleg Cetinic in Paris and Felicia Fonseca in Flagstaff, Arizona, contributed to this report.
Palm Desert Neighborhood Target of Mail Theft By Angela Monroe PALM DESERT -- Someone is stealing mail from one Palm Desert community, and trying to cash the checks they find. One resident even gave officers a vehicle description including a license plate number after they saw someone pulling mail from a neighbor’s mailbox. Sunday is the biggest shipping day of the year for the US Postal Service. Most people expect to have their mail safely sent to their home, but one resident on Missouri Drive in Palm Desert told me someone is stealing mail right out of his mailbox. Roger Kranz is no longer
using the red flag on his mailbox. Back in August he wrote a check, and mailed it from home a month later Roger’s bank called him. “The bank had been given a rewritten $16 dollar check made out to someone else for 600 dollars...within the same day or two however they were able to use the information on the check to pay a Verizon phone bill over the phone,” said Kranz. In November, Roger says six more checks he put in the mail were stolen. He stopped payment on them, and realized he might not be the only one targeted in these thefts.
“That led me to talk to the woman who delivers mail in the neighborhood who told me she knows of at least 5 other cases in this area here in Palm Desert where mail had been stolen, including one case up the street where one woman saw the people steal her neighbors mail,” said Kranz. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department did confirm one case to me, but could not tell me if they had any leads on the vehicle description and license plate number they were given by the witness. “The story with KMIR I hope will tell everybody that this is going on, it’s rampant, the
police know it’s rampant, the mail people know it’s going on and the people that are doing it are having a ball,” said Kranz. The law enforcement arm of the U.S. Postal Service suggests: • To never send cash in the mail... • Promptly remove mail from mailbox • Consider starting a neighborhood watch program • Place mail in a collection box or at a post office. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service urge people to report any mail thefts to them as well as law enforcement. You can email them at postalinspectors.uspis.gov or
call 877-876-2455. This is the busiest week for the United States Postal Service, and they suggest that you’re home so you can make sure you get any mail that might arrive. “I’ve changed the way I mail my bills, I take them down to a mailbox, and drop them in the blue box,” said Kranz. An interesting history fact for you is that in 1792, the U.S. Congress made stealing mail punishable by the death penalty. Clearly that is no longer the case, but it is a federal offense to steal mail.
Cut the Costs of Holiday Travel this Season By Desert Star Staff Travel is a significant and often expensive part of the holiday season for many men and women. Whether you’re hitting the open road or taking to the friendly skies to visit loved ones, this year there are various ways you can cut the costs of holiday travel. • Book a budget-friendly rental. The holiday season is a busy time of year for rental car agencies, and holiday travelers who are late to reserve their vehicles may find themselves driving gas guzzlers for the duration of their trip. When booking your automobile rental this holiday season, do your best to reserver a car early so you have access to the agency’s entire inventory and not just what’s left on the lot. If you do not specifically reserve a fuel-efficient vehicle, you might be stuck with a large SUV or another car or truck

that costs a lot at the pump. • Bring along your own food. Food is another oft-overlooked expense of holiday travel. If you’re flying, try to eat before you leave for the airport or look up the airport and/or airline regulations to determine if you can bring your own food. Food purchased at the airport or on the airplane will be more expensive and is often more unhealthy than meals you can prepare at home. When driving, pack a cooler instead of relying on truck stop eateries, which tend to be fast food restaurants. • Try to bring gifts rather than ship them. When possible, try to squeeze as many of your holiday gifts into your car rather than shipping them. Shipping costs can quickly add up, but you can save a lot of money if you make room for gifts in your trunk or in the backseat of your vehicle. Just be sure that the gifts do not compromise your visibility on the road. Even if you are flying,
it might be more economical to place gifts in a bag you can check rather than paying separate shipping charges for each gift. Research the baggage fees versus the cost of shipping to make a more informed decision. • Split hosting duties. If you want to save money but are accustomed to traveling to visit family and friends during the holiday season, then consider hosting a gathering at your own home. Friends and family likely won’t scoff at being relieved of some of their annual hosting duties, and you can limit the cost of your travel to just one trip instead of multiple trips. • Share lodging. If you are used to staying in hotels when traveling for the holiday season, then you may want to share a hotel room with family members who also stay in hotels. Lodging or family member can help you costs tend to be very expensive stay within budget. during the holiday season, but Traveling during the holiday splitting such costs with a friend season can be expensive, but December 17, 2014

S P O RT S High School Basketball Bounces Back to the Desert BY DANIEL MARINELLI
Coachella Valley – Now that the high school football season is officially over, the Desert Valley League has switched its focus to basketball season. Palm Springs’ football team won the CIF Eastern Division championship a few weeks ago and the Indians boys’ basketball team has picked up where Dan Murphy’s team left off. Chris Howard’s Indians are 4-1 and off to their best start since the 2011-2012 season, when then-coach, and current athletic director Dennis Zink took the team to a DVL title and the playoffs. With three wins over La Serna, Santiago and Claremont in the Artesia Winter Classic tournament last week, Palm Springs has been building its confidence for Wednesday’s DVL opener against the defending league champion Palm Desert Aztecs. Despite their 71-63 loss to the rival La Quinta Blackhawks in last Saturday’s Rancho Mirage Showdown final, the Aztecs (53) are off to a good start under new head coach James Serven. Longtime Aztecs head coach Don Brady, and players Daniel McCown, Andrew Clark and Eric Oetting are gone but Palm Desert is returning senior big man Anthony Murdica and could be right at the top come season’s end. La Quinta (5-0) is looking like the DVL favorite early this
season, but for better or worse, a team can evolve a lot over the course of two months. Coach Jeff Hepner’s Blackhawks lost Jojo Wiggins but bring back senior standouts Kameron Dashner, Charles Hays and Jared Broadhead. In an interview earlier this season, Serven described the Blackhawks as “Very good, very big and very tough.” Not only do they have size, Hepner’s team is loaded with experience, which will prove to be paramount in tough, late-game situations. La Quinta has seven returning players from a team that finished fourth in the DVL last year. The Cathedral City Lions might make some noise with senior, star-athlete Orlando Wallace. The Lions are 4-3, and with losing players to graduation, are not as deep as some of the other teams in the league. Cathedral City usually puts up a respectable effort every year but can never quite enter the tier where the Aztecs and Indians reside. There is much left to learn as the season unfolds. Last year, the Indio Rajahs and the Xavier Prep Saints finished the DVL in second and third, respectively. This year, however, both teams are at 3-6 and dwelling in last place. The season is long and the teams can turn it around, but don’t expect too from these schools, along with the Coachella
Valley Arabs. DVL Schedule On Monday, the Blackhawks welcomed Rancho Verde and on Friday, they open up the DVL at Indio High School against the Rajahs. On Wednesday, Palm
Springs has a tough DVL opener at home against the Aztecs. After the game with Indians, Palm Desert won’t play again until Dec. 26. The Indians will play on Saturday at home against Beaumont. On Friday, the Lions
will head to Coachella Valley High School to take on the Arabs in the schools’ league start. All games start at 6:30 pm. For more on sports in the Coachella Valley, follow Dan on Twitter @dsmarine7.
