It was a soulful holiday tradition an unforgettable evening of pop hits and holiday favorites at the MacCallum Story and Photo by Pat Krause The Colors of Christmas concert at the McCallum Theatre was held on Sunday Dec. 14th.

Four incredible performers, Peabo Bryson, Taylor Dayne, Jennifer Holliday and Ruben Studdard graced the stage singing some of the most beloved Christmas songs. Each artist gave their own rendition

of the songs they sang. They sang as a group for a lot of the melodies.

Peabo Bryson started the evening performance by bringing out the rest of the artists to have a group song. Peabo performed solo and came into the audience and shook hands with people in the first couple rows. He after that brought out Taylor Dayne

to sing with him and next do a solo number. Taylor is an actress along with being a million seller songstress. Taylor Introduced Ruben Studdard and they sang together before Ruben gave his own solo performance. Ruben Studdard, 2003, American Idol winner, said he has waited 12 years to put out his private Christmas CD that is now on

Murder Charges Filed Against La Quinta Teen

By KMIR News Staff A young man arrested following a chase that resulted in several collisions in Cathedral City was charged today with murder in the shooting death of a Palm Desert resident.Kurtis Knigge, 18, of La Quinta, was arrested shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday in connection with the chase and burglaries and vehicle thefts, and was later booked without bail in connection with the murder of

26-year-old Conrado Pizarro.

Knigge pleaded not guilty to murder -- as well as a felony count of shooting at a vehicle and sentence-enhancing allegations of using a firearm and inflicting great bodily injury -- at his arraignment Monday afternoon at the Larson Justice Center in Indio. Riverside County Superior Court Judge Victoria Cameron set his bail at $2 million and ordered him back to court

Jan. 7 for a felony settlement conference.

Pizarro was gunned down around 9 p.m. Dec. 3 at Washington Street and Avenue of the States in Palm Desert and died two days later, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities haven’t disclosed a possible motive for the killing.

This was a beautiful concert to get the audience in the Christmas spirit with all the lovely Christmas Music. Each artist had a favorite Christmas song they wanted to share with the guests.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Best-Selling Authors, Anne Rice and her son Christopher Rice held a book signing and reception at Just Fabulous Book Store in Palm Springs on Nov.6th. The street in front of the store was lined with fans wanting an autographed book and to meet these famous authors. Many people brought several books to get signed as they are devoted fans of the authors.

This appearance is the last stop on a nationwide book tour and the only time the duo will make a joint book signing in the Desert. Anne was signing her newest book, Prince Lestat: the Vampire Chronicles.

Other hard-cover books, Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damed were also available at the book store for purchase to be autographed by Anne Rice. Christopher was autographing his current novel, The Vines. Both are International and New York Times Best-Selling authors.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause REVU Fine Art Gallery held a Christmas Opening featuring The Coachella Valley Symphony String Quartet. A special concert was given by a KORA player from Africa.

This opening was in support of the Coachella Valley Symphony with David Wolff and Dr. Lisa Lindley in attendance from the Symphony.

Several artists and their works were on display. Photographer Marc Robin showed his black-and-white photographic exhibit. Jeanette DeBonne displayed her colorful works of art. Brad Gordon told of the sculptures he brought from the artists of Zimbabwe. He told about life in Zimbabwe and about the artist’s creation from the stone and granite of the area, and that they were a one-of-a-kind piece that is not duplicated.

Each artist spoke about his work, and the owner Jack McLaine spoke about his love of the work of each artist. David Wolff and Lisa Lindley told about the work the symphony does and that each member is a volunteer and how they work with local youth. Refreshments were served as the music of the symphony trio of musicians played. REVU focused on art collectors from previously held private collections. It gives the artists a professional venue for art collectors in two galleries just across from each other at 41801 Corporate way in Palm Desert. An online gallery reaches art collectors around the world.

PEGASUS RIDES AGAIN

By Pam Price Pegasus held their 20th Annual Riders Awards luncheon on December 14th, themed “Dancing with the Stars” at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort and Spa’s Crystal Ballroom in Indian Wells. Almost 700 guests gathered at this year’s event to a program dedicated to the memory of Albeth Paris Grass, who had given so generously of her time to Pegasus over the years.

Committee members who included Robin Montgomery, Peter Solomon Sherrell Paris, Rene Perla, Iris and Thomas Smotrich and Danny and Regina McGrath assisted event Chairs Lori Sarner and Chase Berke. Dan McGrath, of EZ103.FM CBS Local with hostess Alicia Gomez and disc jockey, Michael Capitanelli, hosted this year’s Holiday Themed Dance Party, and Medal Ceremony. The Pegasus Rider of the Year Award was presented to Danny Cintron, and the Pegasus Family of the Year went to the Mann Family.

Pegasus honored their Pegasus partners whose donations helped make this year’s event a success; among those were Bea Levy and Dr. Joseph C. King, Jim Houston, Kay Hanson, Peggy Cravens, Lindi Biggi, Jerome Angel and the Auen Foundation.

• Each year, more than three billion Christmas cards are sent in the United States alone.

• In 350 AD, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the official celebration date for the birth of Jesus Christ. Many historians and theologians have surmised that Christ really wasn’t born this time of year, thanks to imagery and information from the Bible.

• Christmas carols began as an English custom called “wassailing.” Individuals toasted neighbors to a long and healthy life.

• Despite the common tale that three wise men paid homage to baby Jesus, the Bible never specifically calls out a number. Similarly, there’s no specific indication that they visited the infant Jesus. Their visit may have occurred when Jesus was older.

of the Nativity in Bethlehem is built over a cave called the Grotto of the Nativity, where Jesus is believed to have been born.

• Many people may be less inclined to stand under mistletoe waiting for a kiss if they knew what “mistletoe” means in the ancient Germanic language.

It literally means “dung on a twig,” for the bird who eats the

berries and then leaves seeds in droppings to propagate new plants.

Armed Man Robs Cathedral City Bank

By Angela Monroe CATHEDRAL CITY -- Police are searching for a suspect after a bank robbery in Cathedral City.

At 11:30am Saturday a man entered the US Bank on Date Palm Drive brandished a handgun and demanded cash.

Bank tellers gave the suspect money.

As the suspect was entering a getaway vehicle, a dye pack placed in the money exploded.

The suspect dropped some of the cash, and then took off.

Another person was driving the vehicle which was described

as a light colored pick-up truck.

It was last seen driving north on Date Palm.

Police searched for the vehicle, but were unable to find it.

The suspect is only described as a man, wearing a blue sweatshirt and dark colored pants.

No one was hurt during the robbery.

‘Birdman,’ ‘Budapest’ Top Critics’ Choice Noms

By LINDSEY BAHR AP Film Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) “Birdman,” ‘’Boyhood” and a host of now regulars on the awards circuit were among the top films listed in the 20th Critics’ Choice Movie Awards nominations Monday, but it was Wes Anderson’s darkly whimsical “The Grand Budapest Hotel” that surprised with 11 nominations.

In addition to nods for the film, the direction, the script and the cinematography, star Ralph Fiennes was also recognized in two acting categories: best actor and best actor in a comedy.

Though beloved by critics

and a box office success, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” was seen as a dark horse in the awards race due in part to its March release date. But after earning four Golden Globe nominations last week, the quirky film could be rising in awards stature as Hollywood awaits the start of Oscar nominations voting.

“Birdman” scored the most nominations, though, with 13 in categories such as best picture and best director. Lead Michael Keaton and his co-stars Emma Stone and Edward Norton all scored acting nods as well.

The dark showbiz comedy also recently earned the most

nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Golden Globe Awards.

Richard Linklater’s 12year film “Boyhood” got eight nominations, including best picture, director, best supporting actor and actress for Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette, and best ensemble.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association also recognized “Gone Girl,” ‘’The Imitation Game,” ‘’Selma,” ‘’The Theory of Everything,” ‘’Nightcrawler,” ‘’Unbroken” and “Whiplash” with multiple nominations, including best picture.

For the most part, the major

acting nominees matched that of the recent awards nominations including Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Imitation Game”), Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”), Reese Witherspoon (“Wild”) and Julianne Moore (“Still Alice”).

Notably, Angelina Jolie, whose “Unbroken” was shut out of Globes nominations, picked up a best directing nod here in addition to Ava DuVernay (“Selma”) and David Fincher (“Gone Girl”).

The Critics’ Choice Awards have a solid track record of matching the eventual best picture Oscar winner. They also

honor achievements in genre films including action, comedy and sci-fi/horror, and include categories such as best young actor and actress, allowing for movies such as “Edge of Tomorrow,” ‘’22 Jump Street” and “The Babadook” to sneak into the mix.

The driver then sped off, leading deputies on a pursuit that ended near Ramon Road and Cathedral Canyon Drive. The car was involved in five crashes before colliding with another vehicle and coming to a stop, sheriff’s officials said.

Knigge was injured by a sheriff’s K-9 dog while being taken into custody and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Also arrested were the driver, a 17-year-old Beaumont boy, and a second passenger, a 16-year-old girl from Palm Desert. Their names were withheld because they are juveniles. Williams was apprehended

by Mexican authorities in the resort city of Playa del Carmen in the state of Quintana Roo in June 2013 -- a day after he was added to the FBI’s list of Ten Most Wanted fugitives. Williams taught anthropology, gender studies and history at USC for about 20 years until his resignation in February 2011. Under the guise of academic research, he traveled in the Philippines and elsewhere in Southeast Asia to have sex with underage boys, according to the FBI, which reported having identified 10 victims between ages 9 and 17. In 2010, prior to his travel, Williams initiated webcam sex sessions with two boys ages 13 and 14 and expressed a desire to visit them in the Philippines. While in the Philippines the next year, he engaged in sex acts with both boys, as well as a 15-year-old, and took sexually explicit photos of one of them, court papers show.

Williams fled Los Angeles about a week after returning from the Philippines, after he was questioned by the FBI. In June 2013, a USC attorney provided December 17, 2014

LAPD Assistant Chief Michel Moore said the case came to light about three years ago, when a Los Angeles resident concerned about the safety of children contacted authorities. sexual contact in foreign places.

Richard L. Arlington, a 73-year-old onetime Palm Springs roommate of Williams’, was arrested last year in connection with the case. Arlington, who shared illicit computer images of children with Williams, pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography and will be sentenced Dec. 22.

The FBI said Williams has lived in Indonesia, Polynesia and Thailand. Williams and Arlington were both members of the Buddhist Universal Association in Los Angeles, which espoused an ideology of “extreme sexual freedoms,’’ according to the FBI. Source KMIR

Resolve to Learn More about Wine in 2015

The Birds of the Australian Outback features a selfcontained outdoor aviary specially constructed for the exhibit of the more than 300 colorful and personable birds. This interactive experience allows guests to go inside, walk amongst the adorable

budgies and even feed the birds with seed sticks.

“This is not your typical exhibit,” says Allen Monroe, President & CEO of The Living Desert. “You are in the budgies’ environment and get to interact with the birds as they are in free flight all around you. We are thrilled to have them back again for the enjoyment of our members and guests.”

A budgie, short for Budgerigar, is a type of parakeet weighing about an ounce each with a long tail and feathered with shades of blue, green, white

and yellow. Budgies are found wild throughout the drier parts of Australia and are known for their familiar fast chirp or “chatter”.

Entrance into the Birds of the Australian Outback, is $2 for non-members and $1 for members and includes one seed stick. Additional feed sticks will be available for purchase. The exhibit will be open during regular park hours, January through April from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

A ‘Wicked’ List for Holiday Fun

With so many holidays just around the corner, here are some suggestions for festive fun on stage, screen and DVD. A wickedly good theatre idea is “Wicked” which has taken up residence at the Hollywood Pantages. If you don’t see the show for Christmas or Chanukah, this high-flying production can be a delightful Valentine surprise since this Broadway ‘phenom’ will stay in town ‘until March 15, 2015.

The show, back by popular demand, is all about what actually happened in Oz before Dorothy literally dropped in. It starts by telling the story of two girls, Elphaba and Glinda. The former was born with emerald-green skin. She is brilliant, but by no

means well-liked. The other is pert, pretty, ambitious and about as popular as you can get. (In fact, fact “Popular” is the title of one of the songs in the show.)

“Wicked,” with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman, is based on the novel by Gregory Maguire and is currently playing all around the world in nine locations.

It has been seen by more than 42 million people across the globe, so don’t miss out on the fun.

and let’s face it, who doesn’t; you won’t want to miss Noel Cowards “Blithe Spirit” at the Ahmanson Theatre through January 18. The show co-stars Charles Edwards of TVs “Downton Abbey.” The entire cast is absolutely smashing, but on opening night, while everyone got cheers, Angela got a thunderously enthusiastic standing ovation as the entire audience leaped to their feet to honor her spry, wry, delightful performance. It is hard to believe she is 89 years young—she is totally amazing and so is this production.

In December, movie choices are at their best. It seems as though Hollywood puts most of their major, artistic films out at almost the same time in order to be nominated when the Oscars roll around. This year is no exception. One special film, opening on Christmas Day, is “Into the Woods,” a fantastic fairytale adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical. The all-star cast, headed by Meryl Streep as the witch, includes James Corden as the Baker, Emily Blunt as his wife and Johnny Depp in the role of the wolf. (My review will be coming soon.)

Also opening on Christmas day, “Unbroken,“ Angelina Jolie’s tribute to Louis Zamperini, a reallife American hero. Louis gained fame as an Olympic athlete who competed in Hitler’s Berlin Olympics. His story also deals with his WWII war experiences, shining a light on his endurance under terrible circumstances.

He not only survived being adrift from sea and imprisonment in a Japanese prison camp, he was able to forgive the unforgivable.

His resilient spirit kept him alive though the war, and his outgoing spirit kept him afloat for 97 years.

“Foxcatcher” is another fine dramatic choice. Steve Carell is a excellent comedy actor who bursts onto the screen in full force as “The 40 Year Old Virgin.” Then

he kept us smiling in TVs “The Office,” but in “Foxcatcher,” he takes on a totally different persona playing the eccentric billionaire John Du Pont. This change in acting style could land him an Academy Award nomination.

A blast from the past is Frank Capra’s “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” starring James Stewart in the title role and Jean Arthur. This year marks the 75th anniversary of this remarkable movie, which celebrates America and American government at its best. Ah, Mr. Smith, we sure could use someone like you today. Navajos Buy Back Artifacts at Disputed Auction

By THOMAS ADAMSON Associated Press PARIS (AP) - The largest Native American tribe in the American Southwest won its bid Monday to buy back seven sacred masks at a contested auction of tribal artifacts in Paris that netted over a million dollars.

The objects for sale at the Drouot auction house included religious masks, colored in pigment, that are believed to have been used in Navajo wintertime healing ceremonies but that generally are disassembled and returned to the earth once the nine-day ceremonies conclude.

The sale went ahead despite efforts by the U.S. government and Arizona’s congressional delegation to halt it.

The sales at the auction which totaled 929,000 euros ($1.12 million) - also included dozens of Hopi kachina dolls

and several striking Pueblo masks embellished with horse hair, bone and feathers, thought to be from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Associated Press is not transmitting images of the objects because both the Navajo and Hopi have strict rules against recording and photographing ceremonies featuring the items that otherwise are kept entirely out of public view. The Navajo Nation initially included a photo of the masks in a news release but later retracted it, saying it was a mistake. The Hopi tribe considers it sacrilegious for any of the images of the objects to appear.

The U.S. Embassy in Paris had asked Drouot to suspend the sale to allow Navajo and Hopi representatives to determine if they were stolen from the tribes.

But Drouot refused, arguing that

the auction was in accordance with the law - and that a French tribunal had previously ruled that a similar sale was legal.

Navajo Nation Vice President Rex Lee Jim said the objects were not art but “living and breathing beings” that should not be traded commercially.

Jim, a medicine man who traveled to Paris for the auction with three other Navajo officials, said they were unable to determine the exact provenance of the artifacts but said they had to face the reality of the auction and buy them back.

“They are sacred masks ... and unfortunately they end up here. Whether that is legal or illegal ... we don’t know. What we do know is that they are for sale,” Jim said.

The Navajo Nation representatives bid for seven masks at the auction, winning

them for $9,120 despite a bidding war with a private collector.

French art collector Armand Hui bid for several masks but told the AP he backed down when he saw that tribal members had come in person buy them.

“I wanted to respect that,” he said.

The approaches of the Hopi and Navajo, whose reservations neighbor each other in the northeastern corner of Arizona, are different in that the Hopi people see the sale as sacrilege and did not travel to Paris for the auction, said Pierre ServanSchreiber, a lawyer representing the Hopis. The Hopi tribe has said that only a member of the tribe has the right to possess the items that embody the spirits of their ancestors.

“Hopis were opposed to buying back their artifacts as they did not want to engage in

the auction,” Servan-Schreiber said.

Hopi Chairman Herman Honanie said he was appalled by the latest sale.

Navajo Nation spokesman Deswood Tome said it would be incumbent upon the leaders of the Navajo and Hopi tribes to discuss how to approach any future sales of sacred items in foreign countries.

“If there are religious items that are sacred in the future, the leadership will have to determine what steps they will take,” said Tome. “Buying these masks here today is a precedent that we’ve set.”

Palm Desert Neighborhood Target of Mail Theft

By Angela Monroe PALM DESERT -- Someone is stealing mail from one Palm Desert community, and trying to cash the checks they find.

One resident even gave officers a vehicle description including a license plate number after they saw someone pulling mail from a neighbor’s mailbox.

Sunday is the biggest shipping day of the year for the US Postal Service.

Most people expect to have their mail safely sent to their home, but one resident on Missouri Drive in Palm Desert told me someone is stealing mail right out of his mailbox.

Roger Kranz is no longer

using the red flag on his mailbox.

Back in August he wrote a check, and mailed it from home a month later Roger’s bank called him.

“The bank had been given a rewritten $16 dollar check made out to someone else for 600 dollars...within the same day or two however they were able to use the information on the check to pay a Verizon phone bill over the phone,” said Kranz.

In November, Roger says six more checks he put in the mail were stolen.

He stopped payment on them, and realized he might not be the only one targeted in these thefts.

“That led me to talk to the woman who delivers mail in the neighborhood who told me she knows of at least 5 other cases in this area here in Palm Desert where mail had been stolen, including one case up the street where one woman saw the people steal her neighbors mail,” said Kranz.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department did confirm one case to me, but could not tell me if they had any leads on the vehicle description and license plate number they were given by the witness.

“The story with KMIR I hope will tell everybody that this is going on, it’s rampant, the

police know it’s rampant, the mail people know it’s going on and the people that are doing it are having a ball,” said Kranz.

The law enforcement arm of the U.S. Postal Service suggests: • To never send cash in the mail...

• Promptly remove mail from mailbox • Consider starting a neighborhood watch program • Place mail in a collection box or at a post office.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service urge people to report any mail thefts to them as well as law enforcement.

This is the busiest week for the United States Postal Service, and they suggest that you’re home so you can make sure you get any mail that might arrive.

“I’ve changed the way I mail my bills, I take them down to a mailbox, and drop them in the blue box,” said Kranz.

An interesting history fact for you is that in 1792, the U.S. Congress made stealing mail punishable by the death penalty.

Clearly that is no longer the case, but it is a federal offense to steal mail. Source KMIR

S P O RT S High School Basketball Bounces Back to the Desert

Coachella Valley – Now that the high school football season is officially over, the Desert Valley League has switched its focus to basketball season. Palm Springs’ football team won the CIF Eastern Division championship a few weeks ago and the Indians boys’ basketball team has picked up where Dan Murphy’s team left off.

Chris Howard’s Indians are 4-1 and off to their best start since the 2011-2012 season, when then-coach, and current athletic director Dennis Zink took the team to a DVL title and the playoffs. With three wins over La Serna, Santiago and Claremont in the Artesia Winter Classic tournament last week, Palm Springs has been building its confidence for Wednesday’s DVL opener against the defending league champion Palm Desert Aztecs.

Despite their 71-63 loss to the rival La Quinta Blackhawks in last Saturday’s Rancho Mirage Showdown final, the Aztecs (53) are off to a good start under new head coach James Serven.

Longtime Aztecs head coach Don Brady, and players Daniel McCown, Andrew Clark and Eric Oetting are gone but Palm Desert is returning senior big man Anthony Murdica and could be right at the top come season’s end.

La Quinta (5-0) is looking like the DVL favorite early this

season, but for better or worse, a team can evolve a lot over the course of two months. Coach Jeff Hepner’s Blackhawks lost Jojo Wiggins but bring back senior standouts Kameron Dashner, Charles Hays and Jared Broadhead.

In an interview earlier this season, Serven described the Blackhawks as “Very good, very big and very tough.” Not only do they have size, Hepner’s team is loaded with experience, which will prove to be paramount in tough, late-game situations.

La Quinta has seven returning players from a team that finished fourth in the DVL last year.

The Cathedral City Lions might make some noise with senior, star-athlete Orlando Wallace. The Lions are 4-3, and with losing players to graduation, are not as deep as some of the other teams in the league.

Cathedral City usually puts up a respectable effort every year but can never quite enter the tier where the Aztecs and Indians reside.

There is much left to learn as the season unfolds. Last year, the Indio Rajahs and the Xavier Prep Saints finished the DVL in second and third, respectively.

This year, however, both teams are at 3-6 and dwelling in last place. The season is long and the teams can turn it around, but don’t expect too from these schools, along with the Coachella

Valley Arabs.

DVL Schedule On Monday, the Blackhawks welcomed Rancho Verde and on Friday, they open up the DVL at Indio High School against the Rajahs. On Wednesday, Palm

Springs has a tough DVL opener at home against the Aztecs. After the game with Indians, Palm Desert won’t play again until Dec. 26. The Indians will play on Saturday at home against Beaumont. On Friday, the Lions

will head to Coachella Valley High School to take on the Arabs in the schools’ league start. All games start at 6:30 pm.
