BLM Initiates Target Shooting Restrictions in CA Desert

By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The Bureau of Land Management has elevated seasonal fire restrictions effective May 6 for BLM California Desert District managed public lands within Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, Imperial, southern Inyo, eastern Mono, San Diego, and eastern Kern Counties. These restrictions will remain in effect until December 31 unless terminated sooner if conditions warrant. “Every year at this time, we ask all members of the public to partner with us to minimize fire potential,” said California Desert District

Manager Andrew Archuleta. “Without your help and the proactive measures we have in place, dry grass and brush could easily ignite, cause a wildfire and threaten public land visitors, communities, adjacent private lands, and natural resources.” The seasonal Fire Prevention Order places stage I and II fire restrictions for the California Desert District, as shown on the online map. The elevated restrictions address campfires, controlled flame devices, and smoking on public lands. The order prohibits recreational target shooting on Continues on Page 4

Poingnant Drama Explores Gay Women’s Sexual Mores of the Past 75 Years

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) Member Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS) The Desert Ensemble Theatre Company (DETC) of Palm Springs launched its 2021/2022 season in its new home at Theatre # 3, inside the Palm Springs Cultural Center with the poignant drama “The Beebo Brinker Chronicles” on Friday, December 10, 2021. The award-winning theatrical company founded by playwright and director Tony Padilla, now under the stewardship of Jerome Elliott as Artistic Director, and Shawn Abramowitz as Executive Director, deliver a potent production and story that revolves around the subject that the great American playwright Tennessee Williams called – ‘that of which we dare not speak’ – onstage homosexuality and lesbianism. The play written by Kate Moira Ryan and Linda S. Chapman, is based on the lesbian pulp novels of Ann Bannon. The titles of these books was intended to titillate the reader and draw men and women equally with such lurid titles as “’I am a Woman”, “Women in the Shadows”, and “Journey to a Woman” in the 1950’s. Most of these novels were published in soft covers which some referred to as the bane of main stream hard cover book publishers. Everybody wanted to secretly read them. And they served millions of women as bedside reading companions worldwide. The opening night audience was treated to insightful special remarks before the play began from the Queen of lesbian literature, author Ann Bannon, as a way of giving both straight and gay audience members the background of lesbian life style in New York City in the 1950’s and ‘60’s. Resistance and fear of

Phylicia Mason being ‘outed’ and stigmatized by straight society if one championed or accepted the ‘radical life style’ kept millions of gay women to remain in the closet as parents, homemakers, employees, business executives and relatives. Back in the 1920’s, relationships like the characters in this play would say that Beth and Laura must have a “Boston marriage”; a coded label for gay women living together. Insightfully and sensitively directed by award-winning daytime TV Star, actor/director, Judith Chapman of “The Young and the Restless”, nicely culls the story from Ms. Bannon’s many books. The play is not a traditional linear beginning, middle and end type of story. It flashes forward and backward at times. But, it never loses sight of its core mission to reveal and relate some heartfelt lesbian issues to the audience of issues we all share on planet earth as human beings. The drill never changes: Birth, Life, Death and the beat starts all over again. Beebo Brinker, the play’s

Lizzie Schmelling title character is portrayed by Alexana Thomas as a sexual predator and proprietor of her bar called The Cellar, and Beebo is just as repugnant as Harvey Weinstein was in his hotel assignations with starlets. The bar called The Cellar is a safe harbor meeting place frequented by lesbians and occasionally gay men where all can meet and relax free from being hassled by the local police. The meatiest roles in this achingly poignant and potent drama however, centers around two young women sensationally portrayed by Phylicia Mason and Lizzie Schmelling as Beth and Laura respectfully, who were attracted to one another in their late teens, but never consummated their feelings beyond friendship. It’s now nine years later. Neither of them has seen the other. Beth is now married to Charlie played by Miguel Arballo, and they have two children. Beth, however, is having second thought about her marriage to Charlie and

regrets that she never scratched that itch about her feelings for Laura years ago. Now In a snap judgment decision Beth leaves California for New York to see if old flames can once again reignite the two friends in a more permanent arrangement. The meeting between Laura and Beth sucks all the air out of the theatre in anticipation of what is about to unfold when they finally meet again. But no spoiler alerts from me from this point on. One will just have to see it for one’s self. This much, however, I will say. It is said that the eyes are our window into the souls of those we meet. The onstage eye contact between these two fearless actors Lizzie Schmelling and Phylicia Mason is palpable, riveting, and compelling to watch. All of the romantic love scenes directed by Ms. Chapman are handled with the utmost of delicacy and taste. There are no seat-squirming moments to distract the magic that’s being created on the stage.

The talented cast consists of Brent Anderson as Jack Mann, an aging gay man who decides he wants to turn in his playbook and retire. Tessa Gregory-Walker as Marcie, Lili and Nina and Miguel Arballo as Charlie and Burr, and Alexana Thomas as Beebo Brinker complete the cast .. The technical team of set designer Thomas L. Valach whose bare bones set of risers would be even more comfortable for the actors who must lay on it in the love scenes if it just had a one inch thick mat to protect and soften those writhing bodies, elbows and knees. I still remember his richly textured beautiful set he designed for” Coyote StageWorks production of Lucas Hnaith’s “ A Doll’s House: Part 2” production two seasons ago. The lighting Designer is Kevin O’Shaunessy. Desert Ensemble Theatre’s auspicious initial production at its new permanent home at the Palm Springs Cultural Center is off to a good start!

Don’t be afraid to ask for help during open enrollment

By Janet Trautwein On November 1, open enrollment for coverage on the Affordable Care Act’s exchanges began in most states. That may be a daunting prospect. A recent survey found that most Americans admit to feeling “completely lost when it comes to understanding health insurance.” Licensed agents and brokers can simplify the process of picking a plan. Better yet, their services are generally free for consumers. Their expert advice can be crucial to helping a consumer enroll in a plan that suits their needs and budget.

Generally speaking, people may only enroll in or change their insurance plans during the open enrollment period, typically in the fall. However, the window to register is just 45 days long in many places. The options can seem endless. Is my doctor innetwork? Is the drug I take every day covered? DAP Health Removes Barriers to Sexual Health Access New Indio clinic opening June 2022 and MISTR Partnership expand the reach of health care service

By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS, CA – DAP Health made two significant moves to expand free testing and treatment to the East Valley by signing a lease to a new facility in Indio and partnering with MISTR to provide virtual PrEP services statewide. On Nov. 29, DAP Health signed a lease for a building in Indio to open a sexual wellness clinic. The organization hopes to open the new space by June 2022. Free services will include STI (Sexually Transmitted Infections) testing and treatment (gonorrhea,

chlamydia, and syphilis), HIV prevention (pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP; postexposure prophylaxis, or PEP), and HIV and hepatitis C testing. If anyone tests positive for HIV, the sexual wellness clinic DAP Health will provide that person with rapid start medication and linkage to care, an essential step in reducing new HIV infections and improving the health outcomes of the person living with HIV. While the cost of ongoing HIV treatment is not part of the free services, DAP Health offers financial assistance. In 2019, 25% of all HIVpositive test results at DAP Health were Hispanic men. “Many folks were driving from the East Valley to Palm Springs to utilize DAP Health’s sexual wellness services. We noticed not only a high volume of patients, but most of those patients were already having symptoms of an STI or testing positive for HIV,” says C.J. Tobe, the Director of Community Health and Sexual Wellness at DAP Health. Tobe believes free testing and treatment, with the convenience of not driving a great distance, will encourage more people to get tested. DAP Health is changing the system to meet the person. Since eliminating the cost barriers in its Orange Clinic that houses its sexual wellness services in July 2021, DAP Health has seen ongoing STI increases while HIV has remained the same, according to Tobe. DAP Health knew access to these services would be vital

while social activities increased. In the first four months: • The Orange Clinic saw over 2,000 patients. • On average, DAP Health sees 170 more patients per month than when patients were being charged for services. • The clinic started the same number of people on PrEP four months as they did in the prior 12 months. • There were over 50 appointments for a rapid start to ensure that people newly diagnosed with HIV or returning to care to have access to HIV medications within seven days. “We are proactively protecting the community’s health,” Tobe said. “Eliminating the cost barrier has proven to increase access to folks in our community for PrEP and STI services.” “One of those barriers is

cost. DAP Health learned that many people testing positive for STIs and HIV had limited incomes. For them, the initial $25 fee for STI testing and PrEP was an impediment to care. DAP Health decided to remove that cost barrier to improve health equity.” In addition to the new Indio site, DAP Health now offers PrEP services virtually through MISTR, a discrete online service that provides access to PrEP, the oncedaily pill regimen that prevents HIV. With its secure online platform, MISTR can determine if an individual is a candidate for PrEP and makes PrEP completely free. Moreover, MISTR manages all paperwork and back and forth with insurance companies and the various patient assistance programs, creating a seamless experience for the end-user. With the new clinic

and the partnership with MISTR, DAP Health looks to make its services available to more people. DAP Health continues to make sexual wellness a priority by providing more people with more access to health services. It also continues to expand its ability to treat more people. “We welcome all people, period. And now we are eliminating more barriers to access sexual wellness services,” Tobe said. “We are changing the system to meet the person. First, we continue to do this; First by eliminating the cost barrier and opening a free sexual wellness clinic to people most impacted by HIV/ STIs. That is health equity.” For more information, visit https://mistr.com/dap/ or https://mistr.com/dap-sistr/

Israel’s Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s First Official Visit to the UAE

By Desert Star Staff Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s trip to Dubai marks the first official visit by a Jewish prime minister to the Middle East since establishing the UAE’s embassy in Israel. The United Arab Emirates and Israel have been close allies since the 1990s when Benjamin Netanyahu led a delegation to sign the Abraham Accords and establish diplomatic relations. Bennett, a small nationalist party leader in Israel, rose to a parliamentary deal with Netanyahu. He has portrayed himself as the ultimate statesman and defender of the state of the Jewish people. While Bennett will meet with the United Arab Emirates Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed, the trip is primarily about economic cooperation. Last month, Israel and the UAE launched free trade

www.desertstarweekly.com

talks. As a result, the two countries expect to improve their trade from $125 million in 2020 to $500 plus million in 2021. While Bennett is in Dubai, he will not likely visit the Israeli pavilion at Expo 2020. Instead, he will meet with business leaders and other officials to promote trade and cooperation. The visit will also help to foster bilateral ties and promote Israel’s interests. It will help strengthen the UAE and Israel relations and discuss the Iranian issue. The UAE has a long history of diplomatic relations with Israel. The country’s relationship with the UAE is a significant step towards peace and prosperity. When the two nations do business together, it will boost both economies. The visit comes as the UAE’s new president meets with his counterpart in Iran.

The Prime Minister was received by an honor guard and the UAE Foreign Minister, with Israeli and Emirati flags in the background, at the reception facility. The two countries are allied on several fronts, with the former negotiating the 2015

nuclear deal with the former USSR. Therefore, the visit is essential in strengthening

bilateral ties between the two countries. Source: Pam Price

$12.5 million in grants will be invested in Coachella By Desert Star Staff COACHELLA, Calif. – On December 2nd, it was announced that Chelsea Investment Corp., in partnership with the City of Coachella, will be awarded a $4.04 million grant from the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) Infill Infrastructure Grant Program to support New Affordable Homes for Californians. This grant will be used to construct a park, street and sidewalk improvements, onsite stormwater retention and underground electrical systems in the downtown Pueblo Viejo neighborhood. The Infill Infrastructure grant is connected to the development of the Tripoli Apartment Project. This project will be built on Tripoli Avenue near Cesar Chavez Street across from the City’s Pueblo Viejo Villas. The three-story development will feature 108 apartments consisting of 1, 2, 3 bedroom units with laundry facilities, a community room, and 2,510 sq. ft. of commercial space. “The Infill Infrastructure

grant will help us enhance our Pueblo Viejo District without utilizing our taxpayers hard earned dollars,” said Coachella Mayor Pro Tem Josie Gonzalez. “We will see increased safety with street improvements, sidewalk enhancements and undergrounding our utilities. This is a win for our residents who will now have more choices in affordability near a soon-to-be-built Transit Hub and a win for our Pueblo Viejo District vision.” On December 8th, it was announced that the City of Coachella will be awarded an $8.45 million grant for its Central Park project from the California Department of Parks and Recreation’s Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program through Proposition 68, State of California Parks and Water Bond 2018, authored by Assemblymember Garcia (SB 5, 2017). The new Central Park will be a 4.7 acre-park featuring an inclusive playground with shade, a splash pad, a multi-purpose pavilion with restrooms, a walking path, botanical/community garden,

a multi-purpose court, a fitness area with shade, three picnic areas with shade and BBQ pits, a multi-use field, perimeter fencing, with lighting and landscaping throughout the park. “Central Park will add a sizeable park to a parkless neighborhood and act as a trailhead since it will be approximately 900 ft. from CV Link. The park will also benefit

our industrial zone businesses. Should those employees want to enjoy lunch or go for a healthy walk, they have a place to do it now,” stated Mayor Steven Hernandez. “More importantly and to put this in perspective, the City has a $27 million budget, and this adds $12.5 million of parks and infrastructure. The City of Coachella was incorporated in 1946 and is a

29-square mile municipality of approximately 41,941 residents located in eastern Riverside County, in a region collectively known as the Coachella Valley in Southern California. Coachella is about 97 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border and about 1.5 hours from Los Angeles. For more information, please visit the City’s website: www.coachella.org.

ot too long ago, smoking used to be everywhere. In fact, many people remember the days before there were even smoking and non-smoking sections in restaurants. People who smoked and others who didn’t mingled in the same dining room. They sat side-by-side on a plane. Some rode in the backseat of a smoke-filled car, and no one gave it a further thought. Today, things are done differently. However, those memories can be an important indicator for those who smoked back then to advocate for their health with a lung screening.

Importance of Early Detection

Lung cancer has the highest mortality rate among cancers, killing men and women more than any other type. If found in its earliest stage, however, lung cancer is more likely to be successfully treated, according to the American Cancer Society. In fact, detecting lung cancer in its early stages can make the survival rate as high as 90%. “Unfortunately, lung cancer symptoms typically don’t show up until the disease has advanced and when they do appear, they can

be similar to common respiratory illnesses with cough, shortness of breath or pain in the chest, back or shoulders” said Dr. Ella Kazerooni, professor of radiology and internal medicine at the University of Michigan and chair of the American Cancer Society National Lung Cancer Roundtable. “Screening detects lung cancer when there are no symptoms. That’s why it’s important for people at high risk of lung cancer to get annual lung scans to help increase the likelihood of catching cancer early when it’s most treatable. A lung cancer screening is a painless evaluation that usually takes minutes to complete.” However, according to a study published in the “Journal of the National Cancer Institute,” the national average of at-risk individuals getting screened is only 5%. In 2021, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), a panel of national experts in disease prevention and evidence-based medicine, updated guidelines for who is eligible and recommended for annual lung screening. However, the Epic Health Research Network reported 87% of at-risk individuals eligible for screening based on the USPSTF guidelines didn’t receive an annual screening despite it being covered by insurance.

What is a Lung Cancer Screening?

A lung cancer screening is a preventive health check, like a mammogram or colonoscopy. It checks the lungs and looks for any changes from year to year. If there’s something unusual in the lungs, a screening can help detect it at an early stage. A low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scan is the only method recommended for lung cancer screening in high-risk patients. A LDCT machine takes a 3D picture of the lungs. This type of scan uses 75% less radiation than a regular CT scan and doesn’t require the use of needles. Often, there are no symptoms of lung cancer. A LDCT scan can find something before patients know it’s there because the symptoms are easy to mistake or don’t appear until the cancer is well advanced.

Who’s Eligible for Screening?

Lung cancer can affect anyone. A family history of lung cancer, a personal history of lung disease, lifestyle or environmental factors can put a person at elevated risk. Most importantly, a person’s age and smoking habits can be an indicator of whether he or she should consider screening. More people now qualify for yearly LDCT scans, according to the updated guidelines

published by the USPSTF. The guidelines lowered the eligibility threshold based on a person’s age and smoking habits. An annual LDCT screening is recommended for people who meet this criteria: n n n

50-80 years old Actively smoke or have a history of smoking within the last 15 years Heavily smoke or used to heavily smoke (people who have smoked for 20 “pack years” or more)

Pack years are determined by the number of cigarette packs smoked per day by the number of years a person has smoked. For example, smoking one package per day for 20 years equals 20 pack years. If you’re concerned about your risk, have a history of smoking and lived through the time when smoking was everywhere, don’t wait for symptoms to bring up the subject with your doctor. Talk to your health care provider to discuss the benefits and risks of screening and find out if a scan is right for you. Questions to Ask Your Doctor About a Cancer Screening

Lung

If you’re concerned about your risk, have a history of smoking and lived through the time when smoking was everywhere, don’t wait for symptoms to bring up the subject with your doctor. Schedule an appointment to talk to a provider and see if you qualify for a scan or could benefit from annual screenings. Many organizations, including the American Cancer Society, recommend lung screening as an opportunity to identify lung cancer in its early stages, but screening isn’t for everyone. A low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scan is the only method recommended for lung cancer screening in high-risk patients. When discussing yearly lung cancer screenings with your health care provider, it may be helpful to take notes during your appointment, or you may want to have someone with you to listen and ask questions. Consider asking questions such as: n n n n
