“Ain’t Too Proud” Electrifies Audience on Opening Night at The Ahmanson Lady Beverly Cohn At approximately 8:00 pm on Thursday, December 15, the curtain went up on the opening
night of “Ain’t Too Proud – The Life And Times of the Temptations. ” The audience applauded wildly - yelled,
stomped, and whistled. And that was before one note was played. It was as if they knew they were about to experience
an extraordinary theatrical event that transcended a typical opening and morphed into a happening, with a book
by Morisseau based on “The Temptations” by Otis Williams with Patricia Romanowski and music and lyrics from The Continues on Page 2

By Desert Star Staff Palm Desert, Calif. – Desert Best Friend’s Closet is expanding its programs to help recent parolees reenter the workforce thanks to a grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. The organization is the latest recipient of the Coachella Valley Spotlight, which includes a $25,000 grant from the foundation and local media exposure on News Channel 3. “We are grateful to the Berger Foundation and News Channel 3, who are now our partners in giving people a second chance,” said Matthew M. Campos, Executive Director of DBFC. The grant will advance the inclusion of recent parolees
referred to the program by Phoenix Rising Recovery Center and the Riverside County Probation Department, referring about 100 people to DBFC. During the first year, these men and women are on parole and in recovery; DBFC will also help them transition back into the workforce through the organization’s Job Search Readiness Workshops (JSRW). The fourweek training assists with job development, placement, and interview/job attire. “Desert Best Friend’s Closet empowers people by providing appropriate clothing for job interviews and giving them the encouragement Continues on Page 2

On being introduced to him, one of the group says: “He’s white, and he’s Jewish.” However, Berger turned out to be wonderful for the group under his guidance. they are now appearing on such programs as “American Bandstand” singing some of their hits, including “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me),” “I Can’t Get Next to You,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone.” They play to sold-out venues from Montreal to Paris and score an NBC Special. Amid the growing success of “The Temptations,” Otis falls in love with Josephine, wonderfully acted and sung by Najah Hetsberger. Eventually, they marry and have a son named Lamont, played by Gregory Carl Banks, Jr. However, because of the time Otis spends on the road, cracks begin to develop in their marriage, and her affections turn elsewhere. One very amusing scene is in the recording studio where one of the Temps doesn’t want to sing
“Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone.” He thinks it’s a stupid song and doesn’t like the opening line, which refers to September 3, his daddy’s birthday. So during the session, being quite annoyed, he deliberately spits out the first two lines. Once they realize the song will be a big hit, his demeanor changes from “hohum” to wild enthusiasm. The story of “The Temptations,” told through McAnuff’s sharp direction of this talented cast, along with choreographer Trujillo’s exquisite, almost militaristic, supercharged dance numbers, Ain’t Too Proud” is an unforgettable theatrical experience. Along with the rest of the production team, which consists of Robert Brill’s Scenic Design, Howell Binkley’s Lighting, Paul Tazewell’s costumes, Steve Canyon Kennedy’s Sound, and Harold Wheeler’s Orchestrations and Music Supervision, and Arrangements by Kenny Seymour, I’d like to give a shout-out to the other members of this cast, each of whom contributes to this magnificent tapestry of sight and sound.

The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure, and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-960-8299 or visit this Internet Web site https://www.altisource.com/ loginpage.aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2022-01221-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction, if conducted after January 1, 2021, pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. Over the Counter, Naloxone Spray Could Hit Shelf in 2023
By Desert Star Staff One of the critical steps to reducing opioid overdose is to make naloxone available to more people. In response, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is taking an innovative approach to speed up the development of nonprescription naloxone products. It tests products that may be safe for use without a prescription and develops consumer-friendly labels. Only a few pharmacies are willing to dispense naloxone without a prescription. For those that do, the product costs can be high, and there is also the fear that pharmacists will discriminate against consumers. Emergent BioSolutions submitted an application to the FDA for over-the-counter Narcan spray. This type of spray is already prefilled and requires no assembly.
The naloxone available today is primarily an injectable drug, but newer nasal spray versions are available at many police stations. There are also several types of naloxone products that are sold at libraries and other public spaces. However, these are considered community-use products and have limited postmarketing experience. Studies indicate that a lack of naloxone in stores and pharmacies has led to an overdose epidemic. According to a survey released by the Delaware Overdose Fatality Commission, naloxone was not dispensed 93 percent of the time. If an over-the-counter naloxone spray becomes available, the companies that produce and sell it must treat it as a prescription. Then, these companies must submit an application to the
FDA, which can fast-track the process. While it has been approved for over-the-counter sale, the price is still relatively high at around $150. Some advocacy groups argue that the price is too high and say it is the government’s responsibility to make the medication affordable. In December, the AC met to discuss the issue of over-the-counter naloxone. The focus of the meeting was to discuss ways to make naloxone more accessible to more people. Also discussed was a proposal by the Department of Health and Human Services to authorize naloxone sales through bulk orders. Advocacy groups and health officials argue that this could help prevent overdose deaths and that the cost of the Narcan spray is not a reason to prevent people from using the drug.
Another company, Harm Reduction Therapeutics, is working on an over-thecounter naloxone nasal spray. They are receiving funding from Purdue Pharma and plan to apply to the FDA for approval of their product next year. Their goal is to have the product on shelves by 2023. However, several commenters raised concerns about the spray’s cost and whether insurance coverage would cover the medication. As part of its work to promote the safe and appropriate use of naloxone, the FDA is developing a model naloxone DFL for over-thecounter naloxone. Clinicians and addiction treatment experts were consulted to provide feedback. As a result, the information was distilled into critical elements, and a model DFL was developed.
Mixed Bag for CA in Annual Health Rankings By Desert Star Staff Data from the first two years of the pandemic are in, and the “America’s Health Rankings 2022 Annual Report” shows California has a few bright spots but ranks at or near the bottom among the states for air quality, drug deaths, and housing issues. Researchers from UnitedHealth Foundation ranked the Golden State 50th in terms of air pollution. Mariela Ruacho, clean air advocacy manager for the American Lung Association, said wildfire smoke does not help, but the most significant contributor is transportation. “California is home to six of the 10 smoggiest cities in the nation, and eight most polluted by particle pollution,” Ruacho reported. “So, it puts people at higher risk for an asthma attack, heart
attack, stroke, lung cancer, and premature death.” California also ranked 50th for colorectal cancer screenings and 48th for access to primary care doctors. Still, the state scored best in the U.S. for its low number of drinkingwater violations and ranked second for its relatively low numbers of smokers and people with multiple chronic health conditions. This is the 33rd annual report and the first to include data from the first two years of the pandemic. Dr. Rhonda Randall, chief medical officer for UnitedHealthcare employer and individual, said from 2019 to 2020, the opioid crisis worsened, leading to a shocking 43% increase in drug deaths in California, with a 30% jump nationally.
“This is the largest yearly increase in drug deaths since we had been looking at it in 2007,” Randall noted. “That means nearly 92,000 additional people died in
the United States due to drug injury and overdose compared to the prior year.” The report also cited an 18% jump in premature deaths per 100,000 people
nationally from 2019 to 2020. Disclosure: United Healthcare contributes to our fund for reporting on Health Issues.
Musk Announces Resignation as Twitter Boss. ”I will resign as CEO as soon as I find someone foolish enough to take the job! After that, I will just run the software & servers teams.” — Elon Musk
By Desert Star Staff Multi-billionaire and tech entrepreneur Elon Musk (51) announced that he would be stepping down as Twitter boss. A few days earlier, he had had a poll voted on whether he should resign. 17.5 million users took part, and 57.5 percent voted for his resignation. He wrote on Tuesday evening: “I will step down as CEO as soon as I find someone foolish enough to do the job! After that, I will lead the software and server teams.” Musk only said on Sunday that there was no successor and that “nobody wants the job that can keep Twitter alive.” In October, he bought Twitter for a whopping $44 billion, then made a series of controversial decisions
that caused chaos. Shortly after the purchase, the native South African signaled that he did not want to hold his top position for too long. Musk runs numerous other companies, including shares in carmaker Tesla and the space company SpaceX. He had indicated that he wanted to focus more on his other companies after the takeover phase. In just a few weeks, the formerly richest person in the world managed to plunge Twitter into a real crisis. First, he fired half the workforce; then, he is said to have ordered beds to be set up at the company’s headquarters in San Francisco (California). In mid-December, Musk temporarily blocked six journalists on Twitter who had reported critically about him.
He refused to pay rent for his offices and could even transfer the promised severance pay to laid-off employees. The message about
Musk’s Twitter exit should particularly please Tesla investors. Because: The chaos weeks on Twitter demanded much attention
from the multi-entrepreneur. Many investors fear that Tesla could be disadvantaged by the time-consuming takeover. And even though the electric car manufacturer is under pressure, the stock market price has lost around 50 percent in three months.
