Pyrotechnical Inferno: 29 Dead!

Huge Fireworks explosion kills 29, and injures 72, including 13 children with burns of 90 percent of their body. By Desert Star Staff A huge explosion has rocked a pyrotechnics market in Greater Mexico City, reportedly killing over two dozen people and injuring at least 70 others, including many children. Eyewitnesses captured the exact moment of the enormous blast on video. At least 29 people died as a result of the explosions, Mexico State

Gov. Eruviel Avila told local news outlets, according to AP. The initial incident took the lives of 26 people while three more died after being escorted to local hospitals. At least 72 people, including children, are being treated for burns injuries, according to State Health Secretary Cesar Nomar Gomez Monge. Avila, meanwhile, noted that at

least 13 children who suffered burns to more than 90 percent of their bodies are being sent to Galveston, Texas for treatment.A series of blasts happened at around 2:50pm at a fireworks market, San Pablito. The explosions were even heard in the nearby towns of Cacalco and Tultitlan, locals wrote on Twitter. Emergency services have been dispatched to the scene.

PDHS Grad DJ Alexander Headed To NFL Pro Bowl By Julie Buehler Most players drafted in the 5th round of the NFL draft aren’t always expected to make the team, let alone head to the NFL’s All-Star game in the Pro Bowl. But Palm Desert High School’s DJ Alexander not only logged a career-high 41 defensive snaps in the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend against the Tennessee Titans, but he also received the good news that he’s been

voted as an alternate for the NFL Pro Bowl as fellow Chiefs player Bubba MarchLillard tweeted today. Congrats to my linebacker brother @D_alexander4 on his pro bowl honor! Great to see the best special teams player in the NFL get awarded— Bubba MarchLillard (@TheMarchingJay) December 21, 2016 He was voted in as a special teams player. Thanks to his sure

tackling and consistency, when Chiefs Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson unfortunately ruptured his Achilles tendon, Alexander was the back up and called into his first career start. However, should the Kansas City Chiefs advance to Super Bowl 51 in Houston, it’s fair to believe Alexander will happily give up his alternate spot in the Pro Bowl. Source: KMIR

Firefighters, policemen, and paramedics from the nearby municipalities of Coacalco, Tultitlan, Cuautitlan Izcalli and Zumpango, were mobilized along with State Security Commission units, Quadratin reports.Members of the Mexican Army also arrived to help with rescue and evacuation operations. The city in which it happened, Tultepec, is known for its pyrotechnics

industry. Every year, it holds a weeklong festival with fireworks competitions among producers. The National Pyrotechnic Festival is an annual nine-day event in March, which promotes both a local tradition of producing and using fireworks.Accidents involving fireworks are increasing in Tultepec this time of the year, as locals engage in Christmas celebrations.

The Figures will be judged after the skaters leave the ice. The judges won’t know which competitor completed which Figure; they will only know the patch number.

“The World Figure Championship & Figure Festival in collaboration with World Figure Sport unites the triumvirate of an historical sporting legacy – predating the modern Olympic movement – with academics (mathematics, literacy and handwriting) and the arts (dance, music and drawing),” said Karen Courtland Kelly, President of the World Figure Sport Society. Janet Lynn, Olympic Bronze Medalist and World Figure Championship Judge, explains: “Figures are sport and art. Figures combine language and technique of movement to produce circular,

complicated geometric patterns on ice. Figure-Skaters use athletic, academic, and artistic competencies to achieve precise patterns of movement for all types of Figures. Ice tracings tell a story of Figure-Skating knowledge and skill. Finesse is essential to become a proficient, beautiful Figure-Skater. Highly refined Figure Sport disciplines on ice attain a realm of art.” To win the World Figure Championship titles, a skater must complete 16 Figures over two days and attain the lowest sum (obtains the highest Championship Rank similar to stroke play in golf).

Coachella Medical Marijuana Operation One Step Closer By Kitty Alvarado COACHELLA, Ca.-The city of Coachella’s planning commission has voted unanimously to allow a massive medical marijuana grow and processing facility. Ajax Auto Wrecking has been operating in the City of Coachella for over 50 years. But the current owners, Paul Pavo and John Kearney say they’re making way for a new industry, marijuana. For Pavo, the decision

didn’t come easy, “We’ve enjoyed being here in Coachella and operating our business successfully ... so when the mayor and the city had the vision to designate this area for medical marijuana cultivation we saw an opportunity but also a little hesitation.” Their 14 acre property lies in 200 acres the city has turned into a zone for cultivating marijuana. Benjamin Levine CEO of Del-Gro plans

to build large scale grow and processing facilities on the Ajax property, the largest of its kind in the state. “We have plans to develop over 1 million square feet on this phase of development here on the Ajax property we’re going to have 14 buildings they’re each going to be divided into two spaces for tenants we expect right around 25 to 28 different tenants and different companies to rent from us

they’re going to have their own infrastructure as far as grower and cultivators go and we at Del-Gro are going to handle all the processing of the plant for them,” says Levine. He plans on processing 36 thousand pounds of marijuana per year, with revenue projected to be about $80 million. But if the project gets final approval by the planning commission and the city council, the city stands to gain jobs and where

from $2 to $6 million in tax revenue on this project alone. “Close to 10 percent of our operating budget and it means that the city will have more revenue to fix up streets, to provide services in the form of parks and recreation and public safety ... a real game changer for the city,” says Luis Lopez the city’s Development Services Director. The city council will vote on January 4, 2017. Source KMIR

By Desert Star Staff Why were sufficient precaution measures not

taken in some European cities after the Europol warning of increased risk of terrorist attacks? What did intelligence services know about the alleged attacker? RT asked experts. Tunisian national Anis Amri was named by the German federal prosecutor’s office on Wednesday as the suspect in the Berlin Christmas market attack. The man reportedly sought asylum in Germany and was already on the radar of intelligence services. dentity documents belonging to Amri were allegedly found inside the truck. RT asked David Lowe, former UK counter-terrorism officer whether it’s normal for it to take two days to find the suspect’s ID in the vehicle. “It depends on what condition the car was after the incident finished. Maybe there might have been all the documentation – we’ve got to see, we really don’t know. Yes, I suppose you could argue that this could have been an absolutely vital piece of evidence that might have been seized upon earlier. But the good news at least they found it, and there is now a name to the person we’re looking for. That is an interesting angle because we’ve supposed that it’s been an individual, who is being inspired by what they’ve heard and seen from – we can now say ISIS because they are claiming responsibility. But it could be, because they are from Tunisia, and a lot of Tunisian citizens have joined ISIS over in Syria and Iraq, as well where they held territory in Libya. So it just might be another avenue for the investigators to look at the possibility that this is being organized and they’ve got someone who is a member of the group, who is active in Germany,” he said.German security forces are now putting up concrete barriers around Christmas markets in cities like Dresden. RT asked the analyst whether security measures should have been taken earlier, given increased risks and the attack in Nice where similar tactics were used. Europol - citing intelligence

services - warned that jihadists were likely to carry out more terrorist attacks. Lowe said he was “quite surprised” that some precautions were not taken in markets in a capital city like Berlin. “It’s the same throughout most of Europe where most towns and cities” have Christmas markets and there are a lot of other public events at this time of year, he said. Among measures that can be taken the expert named “physical prevention issues like concrete and so on,” cordoning off some areas, increased uniformed police presence. However, Lowe said, the real key to preventing terrorist attacks “is information in intelligence that comes in.”According to Charles Shoebridge, former counter-terrorism intelligence officer, a lot of questions currently remain unanswered. “I think in the fullness of time, if not now, there are many questions to be asked of what the German intelligence services knew about this operation that has been carried out; about what they knew perhaps about the suspect that was originally arrested; but above all of course – what they knew about the suspect they have now named. Also - if as the briefings are being given turn out to be correct – that this was a person that was known, at least in some kind of terrorism context; if he

was regarded as dangerous to the extent that appears to have been the case, then why wasn’t he under more tight surveillance,” he told the press.“It is certainly a mystery why… when the German police first started saying that they weren’t completely sure that a suspect that they’ve got was that person that was responsible, I began to wonder. Simply because by that time with such a serious crime as this, police should have had information coming in purely from a reactive investigative point of view, let alone any intelligence input. They would have had DNA, or the possibility of DNA, fibers from the clothes of the suspect – we’re talking about the Pakistani suspect, fingerprints, phone records, and so on. All which should have, in a case of this magnitude, have either confirmed or ruled out his involvement very, very quickly,” Shoebridge said. Regarding the found ID, “it may be that the police indeed did find this identity document,” he said, adding though that “many people are speculating that it’s been placed.” “Why hasn’t that been mentioned for two days, when the person on the identity document was so well-known, it seems, to the intelligence services in this kind of respect. We’ve had a two-day lead which has disappeared and allowed that person and his accomplices to make at least some kind of escape

and dispose of evidence. And there would be many questions about not only the intelligence aspects but also about the investigation,” the expert said. Now that two days have passed, it is not going to be easy to find the suspect particularly in a country like Germany with a population of over 80 million, agrees Alexandre Mendel, French journalist and author of the book La France Djihadiste. “It is not going to be easy, especially in Europe with open borders. He can be in France right now. Maybe he will attack France, maybe he we will attack Italy – we don’t know where he is,” Mendel told RT. It is now difficult to say whether the attacker had accomplices, according to Mendel. “It is probably a copycat of what happened in Nice on July 14, on the Bastille Day in France, on the French Riviera. It is a very easy attack to do. It is easier to rent a truck than to get a Kalashnikov. It is way easier to kill soft targets at a Christmas Market than soldiers,” he said. “The attack that happened two days ago in Berlin is probably the easiest attack that can occur in a country that doesn’t defend itself. Actually right now in France all Christmas markets are secured with reinforced, concrete barriers – that is not the case in Germany…”

and El Paseo in Palm Desert. If you ask Anthony Hopkins the meaning of a painting or drawing, the answer might surprise you. He says, “I don’t think there’s any meaning in it. I just paint. I discover as I go along and I don’t analyze, I just go for it. The way my mind is constructed, I like to do things fast and multitask. It’s something that I am proud of because I want to do everything I can. Time is running out.” That notion of multitasking to devour experience might derail any other artist whose pace might be more leisurely. But despite the fast-moving

mind and reflexes of this artist, he still manages to produce cohesive, moving, startling pieces of art again and again. He points to a studio filled with all manner of paints, oils, acrylics, tempera bottles, pens, markers, brushes, canvases— it’s all a riot of color and possibility. Strangely, even with the walls lined with paintings of all sizes, the studio is also very organized, very neat. Hopkins insists that he has no concept of the results while doing his art. “I do not feel afraid. I don’t feel that I have to prove anything.” This freedom from expectation and judgment allows him to run in whatever direction his imagination happens to be at any split second. “My father took me into the Church at Margam Abbey. I saw the stained-glass windows. I loved all the rich color. I’m sure it was much brighter in my childhood, as bright as a child sees it. Coming to California I was attracted by all the color here. You know, we’re not here for long, so I wanted to express color while I could.” Hopkins’ paintings are all very colorful. He plays with shadow and media, line and texture, but what they all have in common is the use of color to express emotion. Said Hopkins, “The face is not important. It’s the eyes. The eyes are the most haunting part of one’s soul. It’s very primitive. It’s childish art. It has to be childish because I am a child. I’ve discovered lately that I enjoy all that is supposedly wrong with me. I used to take myself so seriously, but now I December 23, 2016

don’t. I allow myself to revel in the exhilarating nature of it all, maybe reaching for the divine.” And Hopkins has no plans to change the way he is working anytime soon. “I’ve never had that kind of academic discipline to work by rules. I work by trial and error. I guess I am purely instinct.” While working on a painting in his studio he says, “I don’t know where this one is going.

But I find that very satisfying. Everything is total chaos, utter madness. It’s a reflection of what is in my mind. I tell younger people to be it. Enjoy it. This is it. It’s the way we are made. It’s the way I’m made.” Desert Collection Gallery hours are: Monday-Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 11-4. For more information call 760/674-9955 or go to www. desertartcollection.com.

‘The King and I’ at Pantages Is ‘Something Wonderful’

Laura Michelle Kelly as Anna and the Royal Children. Photo by Matthew Murphy Composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II joined forces in 1942 and created the most successful partnership in American musical theater history. Together they composed “Oklahoma!” (1943), “Carousel” (1945),South Pacific” Pacific” (1949) and the sumptuous “The King and I,” based upon the novel “Anna and the King of Siam” by Margaret Landon. In 1956 the Broadway musical moved on to the big screen, starring Yul Brynner. The film was nominated for nine Oscars, and Brynner took home the gold for his portrayal as the King. In 2015 the Lincoln Center Theater production of “The King and I,” directed by Bartlett Sher, won four Tony Awards and was hailed as the Best Revival of a Musical. Now that awardwinning gem is on stage at the Pantages Theatre for a sixweek engagement, ending Jan. 21, 2017. And even if you have seen “The King and I” before on stage or screen, don’t miss this excellent production. Every role, from the King and

Anna to the many, many royal children, is perfectly cast. The show begins as Anna (Laura Michelle Kelly) and her young son Louis (Graham Montgomery) sail into Bangkok. Anna has come to Siam, now known as Thailand, to teach the King’s family, but both are anxious about being so far away from home. To help Louis feel less afraid they sing “I Whistle a Happy Tune.” Then things get off to a bit of a rocky start when Anna learns that she and Louis will be living in the palace, not in a small home of their own which the king had previously promised. In the Los Angeles engagement, Jose Llana returns to the role of the King of Siam after two-starring engagements in the Tonywinning Lincoln Center Theater revival. He is excellent as the ruler who is perplexed by the modern world. Yul Brynner would heartily approve of his portrayal. And Joan Almedilla also pitch perfect as Lady Thiang, the King’s number one wife who sings the very touching “Something Wonderful,” a tribute to her

stern but caring husband, Manna Nichols portrays Tuptim. She has been given to the king as a gift, but secretly she is deeply in love with Lun Tha (Kavin Panmeechao) who has accompanied her on her journey from Burma to Siam. Together they sing the beautiful “We Kiss in a Shadow” and “I Have Dreamed.” Rounding out the cast is Anthony Chan, who plays the heir to the throne, Prince Chulalongkorn. Every song in “The King and I” is memorable and helps move the historical story along. “Hello Young Lovers” and “Getting to Know You” are prime examples and “Shall We Dance” is a show stopper as Anna and the King whirl around the stage in a song that reveals just how much they have learned to care about one another. The imaginative sets were designed by Michael Yeargan with lush period costumes created by Catherine Zuber. Christopher Gattelli’s choreography, based on the original choreography by Jerome Robbins, is also outstanding. Bartlett Sher, who directed the revival on Broadway, as well directed this touring company. The current Tony Award winning revival of “The King and I” is a delight. Thank you, Rodgers, and Hammerstein. Your show is “Something Wonderful” in every way. “The King and I” at the Pantages Theatre, 6233 Hollywood Blvd., runs from December 15th to January 21, 2017. Running time is 2 hours and 45 minutes with one intermission. Tickets start at $35 and are available at www. HollywoodPantages.com or www.Ticketmaster.com or by calling 1-800-982-2787.

Hanks in the title role, arrives on Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD. The engrossing film, directed by Clint Eastwood, is the story of the “Miracle on the Hudson” when Captain Chelsey Sullenberger glided over his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 onboard. Despite his heroism, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and his career. The Blu-ray and two Disc Special Edition DVD contains many special features that include: Sully Sullenberger: The Man Behind the Miracle and Moment by Moment: Averting Disaster on the Hudson, which takes us step-by-step through the 208 harrowing seconds of Flight 1549, revealing how the wrong decision at any point would have resulted in disaster. From Warner Bros., rated PG-13 for some peril and brief strong language.

Also from Warner Bros., “Storks,” an animated comedy. In the film, we discover that storks used to deliver babies, but now they deliver packages for a global Internet retail giant. Suddenly Junior, the top delivery stork, gets into a bundle of trouble when the old baby-making-factory is activated, and an adorable baby girl is produced. The film features the voice talents of Adam Sanberg, Kelsey Grammer, Jennifer Aniston and Ty Burrell. There are also special features. Rated PG for mild action and some thematic elements. Disney titles now available on DVD include: “Finding Dory,” voiced by Ellen Degeneres and the charming remake of “Pete’s Dragon...” Have a happy and entertaining Holiday Season.

If you have movie lovers on your holiday gift list, here are some DVD selections worth considering. On December 20th “Sully,” starring Tom December 23, 2016

Judas Priest 10th Studio Album Turbo Remastered By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK, - British metal legends Judas Priest announce the reissue of their 10th studio album, Turbo. The album has been remastered and will be released via Sony Music on 3rd February 2017 on 3CD (the original album and 2 bonus discs) as well as 1LP 150g vinyl. Originally released in 1986, Turbo features all the hallmarks of classic Priest on tracks such as “Turbo Lover”, “Parental Guidance” and “Locked In”. Included on disc 2 and 3 of the CD reissue is, previously unreleased, ‘Live in Kansas City’, a live recording from the band’s 1986 Fuel For Life tour in support of Turbo. The band add “The 80’s is considered to have been the best decade for heavy

metal – Judas Priest roared through it and at the half way point went into unchartered territory with ‘Turbo’. Always believing that metal should have no boundaries, Priest challenged themselves taking on board new technical inventions to create fresh ideas and push their sound forward. The combined songs show another side of Priest’s range of creativity that captures a theme and energy infused with the over the top sensibilities of that era. The ‘Fuel For Life’ tour certainly encapsulated the decadence of the times! ‘Turbo’ remastered and accompanied by a pedal to the metal live recording from Kansas reveals Priest on high octane – Raising fists and devil horns to the next level.” Source: Legacy Recording

Shadow Hills Launches CVs First Girls Wrestling Program

By Julie Buehler Shadow Hills High School’s wrestling program is known for it’s success, and now it’ll be known for making Coachella Valley history. “I used to walk like this,” Lena Taylor says with her shoulders slumped forward. “Now I walk like this,” she says, shoulders back, head high and beaming with a smile. “Guys use to say wrestling is a guy’s sports,” says Vivian Frausto. “No it’s not... It’s for a woman too...” While the Shadow Hills High Girls Wrestling stars enjoy the first and only girls wrestling program, reality is, opportunity wasn’t always available for girls. “For me, I didn’t have a choice,” says Christina Garcia, SHHS assistant girls wrestling coach. “It was be on the boys team or nothing.” But now at Shadow Hills High School, the girls do have a choice as the school launched the first girls wrestling program in the Coachella Valley history. 2017 will be only the 5th year that girls wrestling is a sanctioned sport for California high schools. Garcia was a varsity wrestler at Palm Desert

High School well before the state recognized her sport. “When I started, I was the only person on my team.” Garcia says. “I got another couple girls to join, but they didn’t stick around. Indio had one. Cathedral City had some that came and went but I was the only one that was there all four years. And now, we have a full team and they’re just starting to pop out of nowhere... I feel proud that I was there in the beginning and seeing how far it’s come.” The most recent surveys available show more than

4,000 girls who participate in wrestling and while that number has grown over the past few years, it pales in comparison to other winter sports. Some 47,000 girls play soccer, or more than 11 times and 34,000 play basketball. But wresting is the choice for these ladies. “It makes me more confident,” says Taylor. “The boys see me and I’m like, I can flex more than you bro.” “It takes a special kind of person,” says Frausto. “I didn’t think I’d be wrestling, but I just tried it out and I

fell in love with it.” “Girls don’t know there’s an option to be able to wrestle,” says Gracia. “And for us to have a team for it, they begin think maybe this is something they can do.” But creating a program from scratch takes a lot of work. Something Head Coach Gabriel Abril knew going in. “This is going to be a legit varsity run program and we’re going to push to make gains,” says Abril. “We’re going to push to make a CIF title run, obviously it’s not going to happen in one year, but we’re going to put in the work, we’re going to train and i”m going to push them to do so. “ And the coaching and training is only part of the challenge.

“Unfortunately school districts don’t have the money to start programs,” says Abril. “So that was a huge challenge just to get uniforms ordered and get them here in time to get the girls showing up to tournaments no mismatching and things like that.” But the coaches and athletes we spoke to say the challenges are worth the rewards. “You’re making the stepping stones for every other girl,” says Taylor, a freshman. “We’re going to build something and it’s going to be awesome. I was there when that started and now you guys are champions.” The Lady Knights first home meet is January 5th. Source: KMIR

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-730-2727 or visit this Internet Web site www.ndscorp.com/sales, using the file number assigned to this case 15-21439-SP-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call In Source Logic at 702-659-7766 for information regarding the Trustee’s Sale or visit the Internet Web site address listed below for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, CA05000102-15-2.
