Joe Biden receives Covid-19 vaccine on live TV
By Desert Star Staff US President-elect Joe Biden has received the first dose of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine, following the current vice president and congressional leaders. His running mate Kamala Harris will reportedly wait for her shot. Biden was vaccinated in a photo-op at a hospital in Delaware on Monday afternoon, as his wife Jill looked on. The first vaccinations in the US began last week, with healthcare workers considered the highest priority. Vice President Mike Pence, Second Lady Karen Pence and Surgeon
General Jerome Adams also received vaccines at a White House event on Friday. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) also lined up for their shots the same day. Harris will “likely” get the vaccine a week after Biden, Reuters reported citing a Biden-Harris transition official. Both US-made vaccines – one by Pfizer and the other by Moderna – were developed and approved in record time at taxpayer expense, in what the Trump administration

A Life Journey in Golf By Pam Price Whether taking a swing in Palm Springs, Palm Beach or anywhere in between, what unites golfers is that they radiate a passionate commitment to their game. This truth emerges in a new book, Golf is More Than Just A Game, authored by Michael Lechtman, an ardent golfer and a good sport. The writer assembled his golfing memories and, in an engaging style, penned this book, which was In his thoughts for three decades. Upon his retirement as an attorney, he curated his experiences as a golfer. He wove them into a book, revealing the analytical and social aspects of golf in a conversational yet insightful style. Suddenly I could not put the book down and spent the next two days reading it, looking up golf terms and imagining myself with a putter on the final green, now that I know what ‘presses’
won or lost could mean! The author spent the last 40 years playing golf on courses throughout the Ft. Lauderdale area. His prowess at describing the difference between putts and a triple bogey opened up the mystery of golf in such an understandable and relatable way that I could not put the book down. The reader is invited on a journey into the author’s life from hitting his first golf ball while still in elementary school in the 1950s to the dynamics of his foursomes where drama unfurled on various Florida golf courses through five decades—discovering all this was like taking leave of the desert for a few days. Lechtman’s minute-by-minute description of being on the golf course was fascinating. Fluctuating handicaps aside, the author describes “grueling” tournaments as if “the game was a real test
of a player’s golf ability by spreading out the rounds, someone on a hot streak the first two days may have lost that heat a week later, leaving the way open to a strong finisher.” Reading the book is like being with the author from the first hole to the eighteenth. This intelligent book’s unexpected impact is that you don’t have to be a golfer to grasp the author’s strategies, which could apply to more than just golf. His style is engaging as his perspective ranges from a two-year stint in the U.S. Army, playing golf with Generals, to a four-decade career as an attorney. Above all, the author is a wise teacher, sharing his intuitive knowledge of golf with the reader and proving that golf is definitely more than ‘ just a game.’ I am ready at last to tee off!
“Win, Win For All” Nurses’ Strike Averted
Kitty Alvarado “We did it, it’s a win, it’s a big win,” says Kerry Cavazos, a nurse and chapter president of the nurses union at Riverside Community Hospital. Nurses there and two other Southern California hospitals reached a deal with the Hospital Corporation of America after marathon negotiations with federal mediators. They averted a ten-day Christmas Eve strike. “Having mixed emotions of that strike was so hard … the reason we would walkout was not over money, it was for your safety and my safety and our family and patients, and we had to have that safety in that language to protect everybody,” says Cavazos adding this win was for every nurse on the front lines. “Our priority is taking care of our colleagues to protect them through this incredible

pandemic, and I want to create a culture in which our nurses can thrive,” says Jackie Van Blaricum, the CEO of Riverside Community. Van Blaricum and Annette Greenwood, the chief nursing officer, were thrilled they reached an agreement. “Oh, just really sheer joy, I’m so grateful that the teams were able to come to a resolution, and I really do believe that our community is better off because the deal was met,” says Greenwood adding that she’s proud of her staff of nurses who are superheroes. SEIU Local 121 RN and the corporation that owns the hospital have been trying to negotiate the nurse’s contract for over six months. Among the things now in their contracts, pandemic protections for this and future outbreaks and the biggest win for them hiring more than 100 nurses.
“To provide us a break, that was huge, we haven’t gotten breaks in forever, 12 1/2 hours of walking the halls, no food, not going to the bathroom, running around, and not getting a break is just detrimental,” says Cavazos. Staffing has been a challenge during this pandemic for all hospitals being crushed during this crisis. Van Blaricum says they are moving forward by setting the standard, “I want to create a culture in which our nurses can thrive.” “We know they’re going to support us and stand to that; that means a lot,” says Cavazos adding that she and the nurses now feel they can fight on knowing administrators have their backs. Van Blaricum says the community should be proud of their nurses who have been working hard through December 23, 2020
the pandemic but care deeply about their patients and called them heroes. Cavazos says what they’ve been called to do during this pandemic is unlike anything she’s ever seen in her 32 years as a nurse, and this latest tsunami of COVID patients is making conditions worse. “It’s getting so scary, and when I come home, I feel like I just break down … it’s like the people that went off to Vietnam, I feel that’s what happens to us,” says Cavazos. While Cavazos says this deal is a new beginning, “Nurses were applauding saying thank you, thank you for fighting and keeping at the bedside,” she thinks of her colleagues who are sick and the families of the two who died of COVID, “I can’t even imagine what they’re going through, and I hope they get peace somehow through this.” She says this agreement gives the nurses the strength and protection to continue to wage war against the
virus, “We’re going to stay at the bedside, we’re going to stay fighting because that’s what we do.” Riverside County Supervisor V. Manuel Perez, who represents the Fourth District, who had been urging both sides to come to the table and reach an agreement when negotiations broke down, sent us a statement praising both sides and now urges the community to support the front line workers, “This agreement is very important for patients, health care workers and our county. In the face of overstressed hospitals and a mutating virus, we as a community need to step up to support the health care professionals and hospital system. The responsibility is on all of us to meet this moment and protect the front line workers who are stretched to their limits. We can and must stop the spread of COVID-19 by following the public health requirements.” Souce: NBC Palm Springs

High net worth investors have critical decisions to make before 2021
By Janice Gough Pres. Elect Joe Biden has proposed substantial changes to the tax code, mainly focused on individual income and investment taxes, and at least some of the proposals stand to have a significant impact on high-net-worth (HNW) investors. The proposed changes create challenges, but also planning opportunities. HNW investors could consider “accelerating” some 2021 income before year-end. One proposal by our newly elected President has made, is raising taxes on those making more than $400,000.

For the highest-earning taxpayers, it may make sense to “accelerate” at least some income from 2021 to before the end of 2020 if possible. The most obvious candidates for accelerating income to this month are those already in the highest tax bracket and expect to stay there in 2021. The worst-case scenario is if they accelerate income into 2021, is that they end up paying the same rate on that income. However, if rates go up, you are almost certainly going to be faced by the higher tax rates, to at least some degree. Four ways to accelerate income are Roth conversions, asking employers for an advance on a bonus or, if you own a business, accelerating billing or delaying expenses until January. HNW investors may want to accelerate a deduction into 2021, to lower the tax bite. Some high-net-worth clients may benefit from at least one potential Democratic tax move. One deduction
gains taxes soar next year. For those who expect to make more than $1 million in 2021, they have a few options to try and lower their incomes under $1 Million, Examples would include increased use of installment sales of assets including businesses, investing in non-dividend producing stocks, municipal bonds or investments in variable or equity indexed annuities. HNW people may want to transfer property to loved ones sooner, rather than later. The base estate and gift tax exemption was doubled from $5 million to $10 million under the TCJA and is $11.58 million per person this year, however, it is already scheduled to sunset at the end of 2025. President Biden has called for an immediate decrease to $5.85 million in 2021. “Ballers”, those with high enough net worth that they can afford to give away their exemption amount now and not really feel it at all, and “Allers”, those with the most net worth who should
really give all or substantially all of their assets away to avoid leaving their loved ones with a huge tax bill if they die. If married couples are thinking of gifting assets before the end of this year, they should use all of one spouse’s exemption amount this year before using any of the other spouse’s exemption because the IRS has said it will not seek a “clawback” for gifts made under TCJA. This is the season for gifting and these decisions will serve loved ones and organizations we care about, and stretch your income and legacy further now, than the next four years will offer.

‘Twas the Night Before (the HOA’s) Christmas”
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq., CCAL [Apologies to Clement Clarke Moore] ‘Twas the night before Christmas, and through the HOA community Not a complaint was heard, and there existed pure unity; The thank-you notes were placed by the bulletin board with care, In hopes that the board and manager would soon see them there;
The homeowners were nestled all snug in their beds, No worries of paint, roofs, or plumbing disturbing their heads, And the Vice President in her condo, and I in mine too, Had just settled down for a break from reviewing the dues, When out in the courtyard there arose such a clatter, I sprang to my balcony to see just what was the matter. Away to the railing I flew like a flash, Only to see neighbors with gripes to rehash. I couldn’t figure out in the dark of the night Exactly what they thought gave them the right, But I knew from my time on the homeowners board, Our meetings these neighbors had always ignored, Then in a flash I noticed a visitor,

enacted by the Republicans was to place a $10,000 cap on state and local tax (SALT). However, a repeal of that cap will likely be included in any Democratic-backed piece of tax legislation, which stands to save a significant amount of money in taxes for HNW clients who live in New York and other states with high property taxes. Anybody with a marginal tax rate higher than 28% may want to make certain itemized deductions now instead of 2021. HNW investors may want to speed up the sale of certain assets. Those who normally make more than $1 million a year (or could make more than $1 million next year) that they may want to speed up the sale of certain assets before 2020 ends. Such a move would “ensure that gain is not going to be taxed at a higher rate. President Biden has proposed tax at 40% on capital gains for those making over $1 million a year. These are some options to consider if capital

In a moment came another, without much ado, He arrived with a viewpoint both refreshing and new, I knew instantly it was manager, Nick. He knew what was needed and he brought it quick, He exclaimed “Now, Member! now, Neighbor! Now, Bylaws and Covenant, Please read the rules before bringing your comment. Mars your planetary companion, makes you bold, adventurous and knowing all about new beginnings. We see everything scattered about you, waiting for Taurus to step in with strategy and usefulness. You’re able to accomplish great things if allowed freedom and non-judgment. You surprise everyone. Your desires and aspirations take you on journeys over mountains and plains. One day you will sit down and begin to study. It builds the mind. Love happens.
TAURUS Your companion is Vulcan, husband of Venus. Many see you as the consistent, uncomplex one, driven to care for others, sustaining them unto infinity. However, there’s another side. In the fires of Vulcan, you’re shaped into gold. So often your response to offers for help is “No”. Many think you’re stubborn, unable to change. What they don’t know is you’re thinking, assessing, seeking mental illumination before saying “Yes.”. Aldebaran and Alcyone are your companions.
GEMINI Gemini (mutable), Virgo (mutable) and Aquarius (fixed) are the “people” of the zodiac. You’re the twin, Virgo, the mother while Aquarius is pouring the “heavenly waters for thirsty humanity.” You provide the original matrix of learning, offer the fact of duality, the good and bad,

the personality and Soul, matter and Spirit. You create a dialogue, a mystery often, one side of you dims while the other brightens. Your Egyptian god is Thoth. You carry messages. You’re the magus.
CANCER You are tide-like, moody, different each time we encounter you. You’re protected, shielded and walk crab-like around an object in order to ascertain safety. You’re intuitive but feel so deeply they’re unable to be understood. You cook and nurture, find water where others can’t, the moon is your sister, and you remember the past precisely. You want to be close but can’t unlock your shield made of shells. Keep trying.
LEO You are the Solar Lord, no longer lunar. Your contact with the Sun allows light to be revealed on Earth....a light filled with information that humanity thirsts for. You’re aware of this and also, not aware of this. The Christ cannot reappear until a certain percentage of the world is illumined. That’s your task actually. You’re able to radiate light through Right Governing, Right Relations and coming always from the heart. You learn to Love More.
VIRGO Sometimes you suffer from agitation, anxiety and nervousness, the brilliance of your mind overflowing with ideas that hardly any
mind can hold. Your mind constantly changes, too, and then you feel unsure of ideas becoming ideals, and you think sometimes you need a new reality of self, one that contains a different level of confidence. Your constellation hovers over the Bethlehem stable scene this week. You are holy. You are the mother, Ceres, the gardener. You protect the world.
LIBRA The world is in a state of conflict and chaos, which is very very difficult for Libra, who seeks harmony, peace and stability. You have been called to do certain work in the world that helps to either teach or save people. You are vulnerable yet you carry on. Relationships are primary working tools for Libra. You always uphold fairness and equality. So many times, the ideal in your mind cannot meet the reality on Earth. Don’t turn away. We are praying for you. Venus loves you.
SCORPIO So often, as fiery deep dark waters, you can obsess about many things - something or someone. So often you feel you’re dying. And so you are, though not physically. Instead, experiencing the “burning grounds”, you’re tested nine times every day, everyone leaves you, and hardly anyone matches your depth and passions. Surrender is a task Scorpios need to learn. Often you cannot hear others, listening as you do to your own emotions. Try. Pluto is your brother.
SAGITTARIUS You think of yourself as free and easy, but really, you’re traditional, kind-hearted and very sensitive since you’re best friends with Chiron, the centaur who was both wounded and immortal. Sometimes you feel this way, too. You hold an arrow. Its point is a beam of light. It shows the Way to the mountaintop of Initiation. You’re on a horse. You hold the reins. Situations occur in your life that stop you in your tracks so you can find your Way back to the light again. You’re often joyful. Jupiter guides you.
CAPRICORN Many see you as responsible, reliable, sensible and mature. But deep down there’s another person that some only sense. You act like a traditionalist but you’re actually innovative and unconventional. You quietly stand with the revolution, standing with them in heart and mind, Soul and Spirit. You’re an ancient sign. You’re the gate through which people can gain spiritual access. You don’t know this. Sometimes people turn away from you. They can’t enter through your gate yet. You understand. The unicorn is your totem.
curious and wondering when they can go home. The spiritual Aquarian holds a water pot. In that pot are the stars and symbols of astrology, the emerging words of creation, the new physics, and the “waters of life the Aquarian pours forth for thirsty humanity.” Aquarians need community. Where is it, they ask? Only Uranus knows.
PISCES You realize that when you read other people’s interpretation of Pisces it often misses the mark, saying things like Neptune rules you (what does that mean?) and you’re either drunk, confused or filled with illusions. You know life as a Pisces is very different. Pisces lives in the etheric folds of the universe where the very templates of life are created by starry light beings. You’re one yourself, visiting here for a while. Sorrow you understand. And how to wield the saving Light of Neptune, too. Rest a bit Pisces. Airbnb Initiates Party House Crackdown In Palm Springs
By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS - Airbnb today announced a crackdown on party houses in Palm Springs. As a part of this effort, more than 30 listings throughout the City of Palm Springs that have received complaints or otherwise violated our policies on parties and events have been suspended from the Airbnb platform. This follows Airbnb’s policy change to ban parties at Airbnb listings globally until further notice. The vast majority of hosts in Palm Springs contribute positively to their neighborhoods and the local economy, and they also take essential steps to help prevent unauthorized parties - like establishing clear house rules, quiet hours, and communicating in advance with their guests. address the small minority of hosts who have previously received warnings about hosting responsibly or have otherwise violated our policies. The actions were communicated to the hosts over the past week. Airbnb announced a global ban on ‘party houses’ in 2019, alongside a 24/7 Neighborhood Support Hotline, where neighbors can call us anytime and reach a trained agent to share their concerns. “We all need to do our part to curb the number of large gatherings and parties during the pandemic, and that includes Airbnb,” said John Choi, Airbnb Public Policy Manager for Palm Springs. “By sharing these steps today, we hope to bring greater awareness to our 24/7 neighbor support line, which helps strengthen the enforcement
of our global party ban.” In addition to the global party ban, Airbnb recently shared restrictions on some bookings of local entire home listings by U.S. guests under the age of 25. As a practical example, if we identify a 20year old guest who is located in Palm Springs, our systems are set up to restrict that user from booking a house, apartment or other entire home
listing in Palm Springs for a 1-night reservation the following weekend unless they have a history of positive reviews on Airbnb. However, if that same 20-year-old is booking a stay to visit family in San Diego, the restriction would not apply. Additionally, Airbnb announced that starting December 3, guests without a history of positive reviews on Airbnb will be prohibited from
making one-night reservations in entire-home listings on New Year’s Eve in Palm Springs and throughout the United States. Airbnb also announced last year the expansion of manual screening of highrisk reservations flagged by our automated systems. This process is designed to help us stop reservations that may lead to unauthorized parties before they start.

Report: Affordable Childcare Crisis Could Cost NC Billions By Desert Star Staff Fewer than 1 in 3 parents of young children has access to quality, affordable childcare during the pandemic, according to a new report. The survey of more than 800 North Carolina families found childcare is least accessible in rural counties and in Black, Brown and Indigenous communities. Muffy Grant, executive director at the North Carolina Early Childhood Foundation, said before COVID-19, inadequate childcare cost businesses and taxpayers around $2.4 billion in lost revenue. That amount has already jumped to $2.9 billion, and Grant believes it’s likely to skyrocket as the public health crisis continues. “So, what we have here is a very strong economic case for investments in accessible, affordable, high-quality, flexible, culturally competent childcare,” Grant said. In the survey, 55% of households reported at least one adult having lost a job, been furloughed or having reduced pay or
hours due to COVID-19. More than 70% have had difficulty finding a satisfactory childcare arrangement, and about 10% said they couldn’t find one at all. Dr. Sherika Hill teaches in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University and is a researcher at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute. She said entire regions of North Carolina lack programs proven to boost children’s early well-being. “We have engineered a lot of different policy, through subsidies and for families to get vouchers or discounted care for high-quality childcare centers. But we haven’t gone far enough to make sure that those centers are located in communities of diverse groups,” Hill said. Of those working parents surveyed, 25% predicted their child care will disappear as the pandemic continues, and 30% predicted care will be unaffordable. And as more parents turn to makeshift childcare arrangements in order to keep working, Hill said
Fewer than 1 in 10 North Carolina families receive any type of subsidized childcare from their employer, according to the North Carolina Early Childhood Foundation. (Adobe Stock) the long-term effects on child development remain unknown. “When you’re in a disruptive childcare setting, where you’re having to rely on different and piecemeal childcare arrangements, we have no idea what are going to be just the long-term mental consequences of that, in terms
of relational secure attachment, and even in brain structure and development,” she said. She added women of color more frequently report their childcare provider is no longer open, or they can’t afford one because of reduced income. For rural families, only 15% are currently relying
on formal childcare, down from 44% pre-pandemic. Disclosure: North Carolina Early Childhood Foundation contributes to our fund for reporting on Children’s Issues, Education, Livable Wages/Working Families, Women’s Issues.
Fewer than Half of Texans “Very Likely” to Get COVID-19 Vaccine
likely” to get a COVID-19 vaccine when it’s available to them. But Brian Sasser, chief communication officer at the Foundation, noted surveys
taken three months apart show Texans also want reassurance the vaccine is safe and effective. He said the overall enthusiasm about getting a vaccine varies greatly depending on race, income, political party and age. “Well, the good news in the survey is, from our polling in September, that the number of people likely or somewhat likely to get a vaccine has gone up,” Sasser said. “The bad news is. Still, one-fifth of Texans say they’re still doubtful to get the vaccine.” The survey found 26% of adults across the state said they’re “somewhat likely” to get a vaccine. And the percentage who said they’re “very unlikely” to get it dropped from 28% in September to 20% in the December survey. Researchers found Texans’ likelihood of getting a COVID-19 vaccine also varies depending on a person’s income and education level.
Almost half of the college graduates said they’re very likely to roll up their sleeves, while fewer Texans with less formal education feel that way. Sasser said he’s hopeful appropriate messaging can reduce hesitancy. “Different groups want to hear different messages in their own language, from their own trusted people that they know and believe what they have to say,” he said. “But we just want to make sure that everyone has good messages and can understand why this vaccine is so important.” The survey also asked about political affiliation and found that 52% of Democrats are more likely to get the vaccination than one-third of Republicans. Wildlife Trafficking Jeopardizes Vulnerable Species harms wildlife and people. “These species have been extracted from the wild by humans,” Dodds said. “So any transmission of the virus is a human-caused problem; it’s not a wildlife problem.” Some other species on the list include the scalloped hammerhead shark, diamondback terrapin, the tiger and the yellowheaded parrot, and the tokay gecko, pinto abalone and rufous hummingbird. A couple of plants also made a list - the saguaro cactus and Venus flytrap. Dodds said over the past 10 years, authorities have discovered an underground market for hummingbirds, which are trapped and killed in some cultures to make love charms.
The carcass of the rufous hummingbird is stuffed and sold as an amulet or love charm. It’s one species on a new list of illegally trafficked wildlife. (Avia 5/Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A new report calls for a crackdown on the booming illegal wildlife trade - an activity that’s been linked most recently
to the spread of COVID-19. The Endangered Species Coalition’s 2020 top 10 list of trafficked animals include the pangolin, a mammal sold at the live-animal market
where COVID-19 is thought to have made the jump to humans. Jeanne Dodds, creative engagement director at the Endangered Species Coalition, said this illicit trade
“They’re perceived to confer the ability to attract romantic attention,” she said. “So, they’re often stuffed and filled with some different
types of herbs and are given spells that are said over them. And then, they’re sold illegally on the black market in states like California.” Andrea Jones, director of conservation for Audubon California, said the rufous hummingbird population declined 62% from 1966 to 2014 - and multiple factors are to blame. “It’s got a host of different threats, and a lot of those are related to development pressure - you know, loss of habitat - and also to climate change,” Jones said. The coalition would like to see Congress take up the bipartisan Preventing Future Pandemics Act of 2020, prohibiting the sale of live, wild animals for food. Groups Question Effectiveness of CA Cap-and-Trade Program Read Part 4 of this story in last weeks edition.
By Julia Rosen The Future In recent months, California’s cap-and-trade program has hit road bumps. At the beginning of the pandemic, the spring auction brought in a fraction of the expected revenue. And over the summer, the head of California’s Environmental Protection Agency, which oversees CARB, released a letter stating that he would work with the board to re-evaluate the state’s dependence on cap-and-trade going forward. Whatever California decides, it has to put equity first, says Jackie Cole of Veritable Good, a consulting firm that specializes in environmental justice. “If that is not the central lens through which you are developing solutions, then those communities will always be left out,” she says. New York may offer an interesting model. Last year, activists celebrated the passage of a new climate law that sets even more aggressive emissions reductions goals than California. groups championed the bill, and they are hopeful that the state will steer clear of cap-andtrade policies (they have long fought the East Coast’s regional market). Instead, activists support imposing a polluter fee to raise money, on top of strict mandates to cut emissions. Back in California, CARB recently passed a resolution, “almost a constitution,” says Serna-reaffirming its commitment to social and racial justice after Black employees raised concerns about agency culture. “I have every expectation that that will eventually find its place into everything that we continue to do at CARB,” he says, including managing cap-and-trade. The state has already taken steps to address air pollution in disadvantaged communities, including issuing new regulations for vehicles-a major contributor. After Abe Francis participated in a recent CARB panel on environmental justice, the agency offered to install low-cost air monitors at his home as part of a pilot program. Francis said they have already helped his family members stay safe on unhealthy days. The state has also begun implementing a 2017 law,
passed alongside the cap-andtrade extension, that creates a community-focused system for tackling harmful emissions in the most impacted neighborhoods. Along with Richmond, one of the first cities to participate is Wilmington, together with neighboring Carson and West Long Beach. After a long negotiation between community members, local officials, and industry representatives, refinery managers agreed to cut emissions of several
key pollutants by 50% by 2030. The final plan, released last year, also includes provisions to reduce pollution from traffic and oil wells. Alicia Rivera says the refinery agreement represents a victory-albeit hard-won and too late for many. But Dulce Altamirano, who served as a member of the community steering committee in the negotiations, isn’t quite as hopeful. She lives close enough to a

refinery to hear valves pop open and to smell the noxious fumes that seep out. Sometimes, flares illuminate the night sky above her house. And she says she’s still waiting to see change. “Solo hablan, pero no se hace nada,” she says. “Just talking and then doing nothing.” This story was funded in part by the Society for Environmental Journalists’ Fund for Environmental Journalism. Families Urged to Discuss End-of-Life Planning Over Holidays
Latino people make up about 40% of the Texas population but account for 53% of the COVID-19 deaths statewide, according to the Texas Department of State Health Resources. (aarp.org) By Desert Star Staff COVID-19 has forced many families to make endof-life decisions without clear direction from their loved ones, which is why Texans
are being encouraged to set aside time for such discussions over the holidays. Maria Otero, national Latino outreach manager for Compassion & Choices,
said it’s an especially important conversation for Hispanic and Latino families, because of their higher risk of dying from the virus. Compassion & Choices
has created a free, online and bilingual end-of-life toolkit that Otero said can help families communicate about what often is a difficult subject. “This toolkit walks you through each of the steps of planning the process from understanding your options to reducing your risk using telehealth,” Otero explained. Otero added Spanishspeaking communities often prefer to receive healthcare information in their own language, and the toolkit has been designed to accommodate that. In addition to language barriers, she said cultural traditions in some Latino families can inhibit endof-life planning. Cecilia Vasquez Vigil had not prepared end-oflife instructions when she was hospitalized for 34 days with COVID-19 in March. She said her extended family faced more tough conversations when their 88-year-old mother contracted the virus and later died. Since then, Vigil has been using the toolkit’s step-by-step
planning instructions. She said the conversations have not been easy for her children, but have helped reduce anxiety in such an uncertain time. “I’ve definitely learned that, having those tough conversations with them, that the toolkit has been very rewarding in that I know my kids are going to be OK,” Vigil commented. “I know my husband’s going to know what to do.” Compassion & Choices is urging Texans to fill out and share their advance-care directive with their family and health-care providers. The document spells out the kind of care you want or don’t want, and designates a proxy to make medical decisions for you in case you can’t speak for yourself. Pandemic Compounds Holiday Stress for Parents Working on Sobriety
By Desert Star Staff The pandemic is compounding the regular stresses of the holiday season, and it’s an incredibly challenging time for Ohioans living with substance use disorder. The Ohio START Program connects people who’ve experienced substance use disorder, recovery and the children services system with families who are currently struggling with similar issues. Ashley Durst, an Ohio START caseworker in Trumbull County, explained
a support system is crucial for sobriety, so clients are advised not to isolate themselves. But they could be exposed to drinking or drug use at family gatherings. “A lot of the cycle of addiction goes from generation to generation, and that’s not the best place for them,” Durst observed. “But they’re also told not to isolate. So it’s kind of a Catch-22.” Sarah Hayden, a family peer mentor for Warren County Children Services said COVID is limiting in-person supports for her clients.
“For holidays, if they don’t have their kids with them or they’ve lost loved ones or if they’re just now getting to the point to where they want to try to get sober, all those dynamics take a big toll on their recovery,” Hayden described. Hayden added she’s trying to provide extra support to clients with phone calls and more frequent check-ins. The program also connects clients to more intensive services, including treatment programs that can support their success. Crystal Jameson, a family
peer mentor for Trumbull County Children Services, believes Ohio START is successful because it takes an intensive, team approach and is non-judgmental. “It’s not easy to face substance abuse,” Jameson remarked. “You need to have structure and that support. That’s the best thing that this program offers. It’s just an amazing opportunity to watch that light click on with our clients and see the changes that they make in their life.” Ohio START is currently in more than three dozen counties and is taking
applications for 14 more in 2021. The program served 225 new families this year, including nearly 600 adults and more than 300 kids. Last week, the program was approved for inclusion in a federally-funded clearinghouse that identifies and shares information about evidencebased practices in foster care. dubbed ‘Operation Warp Speed.’ While several prominent Democrats insisted they were uncomfortable with the vaccines given their development and distribution by the Trump administration, Biden apparently didn’t have a problem with that. “The administration
deserves some credit getting this off the ground,” Biden said after receiving the jab. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Dr. Anthony Fauci will reportedly be vaccinated on Tuesday, at an event held by the National Institutes of Health.

Liquid Methamphetamine Discovered in Gas Tank
By Desert Star Staff NILAND, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents seized methamphetamine Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred at approximately 5:06 p.m., when a man driving a red Freightliner Semi–truck approached the Highway 111

Border Patrol checkpoint. Agents directed the vehicle aside for further investigation. During their inspection, a Border Patrol K-9 detection team alerted to the semi-truck. Both driver and passenger side fuel tanks were visually inspected and the liquid inside looked clear. Agents then
noticed a cloudy, denser liquid a few inches below the clear liquid. A field narcotic testing kit was used on the cloudy liquid, which yielded a positive result for the characteristics of methamphetamine. Agents were unable to determine the weight of narcotics due to the December 23, 2020

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. he new year provides an opportunity to re-evaluate different aspects of your life, and that includes your budget and savings habits. Planning for emergencies by building – or rebuilding if the COVID-19 pandemic required making a withdrawal – a savings account to withstand the unforeseen can increase confidence in your overall financial health and reduce worry that a significant life event will negatively impact your finances. “Our research shows having emergency savings is the foundation for long-term financial health,” said Chandni Ohri, program lead in savings and financial health with BlackRock’s Emergency Savings Initiative. “The start of a new year is a good time to make a savings plan, which can consist of putting a little bit of money away regularly.” Even before the pandemic began, 4 out of 10 Americans had a hard time finding even $400 to cover an emergency, according to a report from the United States Federal Reserve. However, if you don’t think you have money to save, consider the majority of people who were able to save for an emergency for the first time in 2020 earned less than $60,000, according to research from BlackRock’s Emergency Savings Initiative, a group of nonprofit experts, corporate partners, and providers. Changes in spending due to the pandemic plus government stimulus packages helped many individuals create much-needed cash buffers. Consider these tips to build your emergency savings account and create a buffer of cash for when emergency strikes.
Look for Ways to Cut Back While you may have already made changes to your spending habits amid the pandemic, periodically shopping for competitive rates of recurring bills, such as cable and internet, cell phones insurance policies and other utilities, can be a simple way to save some money each month. Start by asking your current providers about any special rates and promotions that may be available to loyal customers then check with alternative providers to see if they can provide the same or better offerings at a reduced cost. Sometimes returning to your current provider with a more competitive rate from elsewhere can be extra incentive to work out a deal to keep a longtime customer. Also look at any subscription services you use, or potentially don’t but still pay for, and see if they offer a cheaper plan that still meets your needs or if you’re able to cancel subscriptions you no longer use frequently. Other expenses such as dining out or buying new clothing and accessories could also be scaled back if you find you’re splurging too much. Avoid completely cutting spending for leisure activities from your budget but look for reasonable tweaks that can allow you to set more money aside for unforeseen expenses.
Take Advantage of One-Time Opportunities to Save
Assuming you expect to receive a tax refund, this provides an easy way to boost your emergency fund if circumstances allow you to
save all or a portion of the return. If you’re able, consider having your refund directly deposited in your emergency account. The same strategies can be applied to any government aid checks you may receive, such as a second round of stimulus money that could be distributed to eligible citizens in 2021 to help reinvigorate the economy amid the COVID-19 pandemic. There may also be other times throughout the year when you receive one or more cash gifts, like your birthday or holidays, that can help provide a nice cushion to your emergency fund if you can avoid the temptation to spend it.
Replenish What You Use
Remember to review and adjust your savings plan as needed, whether you’re able to contribute over a longer period of time without dipping into the account or if an expensive life event pops up that requires using all or a portion of the funds. Should you need to dip into the savings, do your best to make replenishing the account to a level you’re comfortable with a primary goal in case any additional unexpected expenses arise. Alternatively, if your saving is going well, consider increasing the amount you’re saving each paycheck so you’re better protected against any major life changes or able to finance a large-scale purchase down the road. Find more information and tips for building your savings at savingsproject.org.
Start a Savings Habit While it’s less important to have a specific dollar amount in mind, getting into the habit of putting some money in savings with each paycheck can help protect you should an emergency arise. While one good rule of thumb is to set aside enough to cover roughly six weeks of living expenses – housing, food, transportation – take a look at what it would cost to cover unexpected issues with your car, a trip to the hospital, a leak in your home or the replacement of a major appliance and start there. Even a small amount, such as $50 in your savings account when it’s the day before payday and you’re running on fumes, can save you from an overdraft fee, having to resort to using a credit card, borrowing from a loved one or taking out a loan. However, research from the AARP Public Policy Institute found having a cash buffer of approximately $2,500 can help prevent financial hardship over the longer term. If you lose your job, for example, your emergency account could help pay for necessities while you find a new position, or the funds could supplement any unemployment benefits you may receive.
Automate Your Savings Because an emergency can strike at any time, it’s important to have easy access to your funds. However, the account should also be separate from your checking account so you’re not tempted to dip into your reserves. Pick a free savings account with no minimum balance requirements and link it to your everyday account to quickly move money over if you need it. Look for ways you can automatically save such as enabling roundups from your checking account to be transferred to your savings with each purchase or having your employer split your paycheck and automatically deposit a portion into savings each payday. If you’re planning to stash funds away for months or years that can serve as both an emergency fund and long-term savings, consider a high-yield savings account.
