Fundraiser for Morongo Fire Department at The Body Deli on El Paseo brought the Community Together By Pamela Price A state-of-the-art fire truck will be serving the needs of the Morongo Valley Fire Department, which covers Highway 62 through Morongo, if David Parker and Margaret Skarin, co-founders of The Body Deli in Palm Springs and Palm Desert have their way. It all started when Parker
became aware of the alarming situation along this scenic but dangerous stretch of highway, which is sadly under funded. “When I realized the desperate need of the Morongo Valley Fire Department, I realized it was everyone’s issue. The urgency of acquiring a modern fire truck was serious and funds that need to cover a new fire truck
can cost as much as $400,000. I wanted to be among the first to raise awareness.” Jock Johnson, Fire Chief, whose firefighting career that spans 24 years, calls his department one of the most challenging he has encountered due to highway danger, extreme fire hazard and insufficient funding. Parker
By David Bauder Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) - Joe Cocker, the raspy-voiced British singer known for his frenzied cover of “With a Little Help From My Friends,” the teary ballad “You Are So Beautiful” and a contorted performing style uncannily parodied by John Belushi on “Saturday Night Live,” has died. He was 70. His London-based agent, Barrie Marshall, said Cocker
died Monday of lung cancer in Colorado, where he has lived for the past two decades. Cocker, an interpreter more than a writer, became a star through his dazzling transformation of the Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends.” Featuring a gospelstyled arrangement and furious call and response between Cocker and the backup singers, the song became a No. 1 hit in England and the highlight of his
characteristically manic set at the Woodstock festival in 1969. In a statement Monday, Paul McCartney remembered hearing Cocker’s cover of the song he and John Lennon co-wrote for Ringo Starr and finding it “just mind blowing,” a “soul anthem.” “I was forever grateful for him for doing that,” McCartney said. “I knew him through the years as a good mate, and I was so sad

Along with Fire Chief Johnson, they combined forces to sponsor a lively “Meet the heroes” fundraising event at the store on December 18, with 25 percent of all proceeds from the event donated to the Highway heroes of the Morongo
Valley Fire Department. “The bravery these fire fighters display in their community is extraordinary, between disaster relief, emergency response, paramedic services and education outreach,” said Odessa Christiana in a letter Continues on Page 7

Which Funds Are Too Risky for I.R.A.s?
By Janice Gough Investor suitability and the type of account (qualified vs. non-qualified) is key importance in recommending what type of investments one should choose for their retirement account. IRAs — which are governed by more stringent rules —can generate additional problems when more complicated, riskier products are used and can create tax headaches. Over the last several years, the pursuit of yield has driven both advisors and investors toward newer, more complex funds, like ETFs (exchangetraded funds) traded funds) and closed-end funds such as some REITS (real estate investment

trusts) — products that use leverage, employ derivatives, deal in options and features, sell short and so on. It is important to lean toward prudence when investing in an IRA. This is especially true for those in or near retirement or the elderly, when losses are hard to replace. In addition, if a client invests IRA money in a risky fund that loses value, there’s no tax break when selling at a loss. For most investors, the core holding of their portfolio should be a lowcost, simple investment. Yet demand has grown for exotic investments, largely because some people are afraid to invest in equities, and bond yields are still very low. These types of investments should be kept at a base percentage of the account total. Loans are not permitted from IRAs or from IRA-based plans such as SEPs, SARSEPs and Simple IRA under Code 4975. However, borrowing inside an IRA is not the same as borrowing from the IRA. That would make a margin account acceptable inside an IRA as long as the IRA owner doesn’t personally guarantee the loan —
thus allowing funds that engage in various forms of leverage to be held in an IRA. But it doesn’t insulate from other tax-related consequences. These funds possibly can create unrelated business taxable income (UBTI). That income, known as UBTI, can lead to tax filings and tax payments, if it tops $1,000 in a year. Keep in mind, nothing in the tax code gives an IRA owner a basis step-up or tax credit for income already taxed. Investing in MLPs (master limited partnerships) is a favorite way to generate income these days; however, when MLPs are owned in an IRA, the result is that the IRA has partnership/business income, which is considered UBTI. The IRA owner must file an income tax return for the MLP they own, which can create lots of paperwork. Highly leveraged investments can also complicate a retirement account’s risk profile in other ways, raising suitability questions. Any type of leverage adds to risk. More leverage doesn’t mean higher returns — in fact it can mean the opposite. Leverage not only increases risks, it also can result
in higher fees. Double (or triple) leverage funds may be common for some, because hedge-type funds have grown in popularity. Liquid alternatives (a hedge strategy which does not base its returns from equity or debt investments), have been all the rage, but hot product trends don’t always end well. Within an IRA, a Liquid Alternative’s investment purpose should serve a purpose beyond return — such as generating income, protecting against inflation or reducing portfolio volatility. The more thought that goes into the reasons for considering unconventional funds in your IRA, the greater the chance that such a fund will be in the correct place for the right reasons. Understand the degree of risk in some of these funds. It is often presumed that an IRA investment is being looked at more conservatively than a fund held in a regular account. One critical factor is matching riskier funds with the higher educated investor. With unsophisticated risk-averse investors, these are unsuitable, but for the knowledgeable riskloving investor, they can be
fine. My most sophisticated clients buy the same types of investments in their IRAs as outside. For educated clients, certain funds might be better inside an IRA. Closed-end funds often pay short-term capital gains or other income taxed at ordinary rates. For someone in a high marginal bracket, the savings can be substantial. Even if such funds seem suitable, realize what risk you are holding. Keep in mind, the purpose of your retirement account. Primarily, it should be to accumulate, grow funds for retirement and enjoy tax deferral while compounding interest without taxes.
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Zig Ziglar is often quoted as saying “If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.” Your association might benefit from setting a few goals, and then achieving them. Here are some ideas for the coming year – if your association already achieved all these goals in the past year, congratulations! • Increase your association’s reserve funds by 15%. The closer your association is to being fully funded, the more financially secure it is. • M a k e s u re y o u r association has all of the Annual Budget Report (Civil Code 5300) and Annual Policy Statement (Civil Code 5310) items and is annually providing all of those items to owners. • Update your CC&Rs and Bylaws to use the new Civil Code references, since the new numbers took effect in 2014. Updating the statutory references
can be accomplished on board motion (in an open meeting) under Civil Code 4235. • Hire an independent contractor consultant to make an overall assessment of association maintenance and repair needs, to discover any overlooked problems which will become more expensive later. The consultant should NOT be a candidate for the work, so there is no mixed motive in the recommendations. • Re-evaluate your association web site (or establish one!). • Create a communication annually informing the members about the board’s current priorities and recent achievements. • Develop an electronic mail list for as many members as possible and adopt a policy of electronic notification to members to the extent possible. Such a policy is in keeping with an increasingly internetbased society, saves postage and office supply expense for your association, and is more environmentally conscious. • Adopt a board policy that the association encourages membership in the Community Associations Institute, and reimburse directors for their CAI membership dues during their board service. • Hold one (or one more) HOA social event, enhancing the feeling of community in your association. Consider adding it to your annual meeting- it might help participation.
• Contact association absentee owners, and ask them to give the board a revocable proxy, or at least a proxy for purposes of quorum only. Often, unfortunately, landlord owners are not as involved in association matters. Giving a proxy to the board would help the association meet quorum and help it to conduct membership votes. • Work with your local utility providers to audit your association’s use of electricity, gas, and water. Such an audit may identify areas of waste, and help your association be a more responsible citizen of your community. • Adopt a policy that each director will commit to attending at least 3 hours of HOA education annually. Local CAI chapters and many service providers give live or web-based seminars. CAI has a three hour basic board education course available as a web seminar. • Find something new your association can do to help
members feel more informed and connected to your association. [Readers- if I receive enough good ideas from you all, I will devote a future column to sharing them, crediting your association] A word of caution – don’t try to do everything at once. Pick one or two goals, as trying to shovel the entire mountain at once is frustrating and discouraging. Then, celebrate your association’s accomplishments! Happy New Year!

Very few people know the name of the American President, but just say Elvis and they know the King- the King of Rock-and –Roll. He and Colonel Parker chose the Alexander Estate when it became available because of the tragic airplane accident that the Alexander’s were killed in. It is a Rock Star Home. The House of Tomorrow- not a square room in it. Four concentric circles set up on the rock with a Majestic view of the valley. It is the first round house in the valley. Built later is the Elrod House (aka James Bond House) and Bob Hope’s house. It is still a mystery who
designed it and is one of the great houses in the valley and the country. Church Giving a Home for the Holidays By Angela Monroe PALM DESERT -- Christmas will be a little warmer and brighter for a local family thanks to Saint Margaret’s Episcopal Church. Sunday night, the church held a musical celebration of Christmas. Hundreds of people packed the church in Palm Desert. The reverend told parishioners about a local family that has been homeless. They have attended the church’s outreach center for three years. They fell on hard times, but things are turning around for the husband and wife. The husband overcame a drug addiction and landed a job, but they are still homeless sleeping outside. The church plans to give them a home for the holidays. “What we want to do is provide a home for the holidays
in time for Christmas for a family that is really working hard to make things work, and this is what the church is about, this is about what God coming into this world in the season of advent is about... I think that one of the things that’s important about this is not only the way it changes the family who’s being served, but changes the hearts and opens the minds and the spirits of the people who are giving, so to me it’s important that we get as many people involved in this effort as possible,” said Reverend Lane Hensley, the Rector of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church. The reverend says people were very generous donating money to give that family a home. They church has found a discounted mobile home to buy, and are hoping to move the family in by next weekend. You Ask. We Investigate. Neighborhood Speedway ®
By Angela Monroe PA L M S P R I N G S - Neighbors in a Palm Springs community say traffic is getting so bad they fear for their safety. A resident has written us saying she was nearly hit at the intersection of Via Escuela and Whitewater Club just last week. Mary in palm springs writes, “i live in an awesome neighborhood except one thing, people just running the stop sign like it’s a yield! It’s supposed to be a four-way stop! Yet they run it, and fast too!”
Residents tell us speeding traffic and drivers failing to stop are major problems in the neighborhood of Via Escuela and Whitewater Club Drive in Palm Springs. Neighbors believe drivers are using the 25-mile-per-hour road as a shortcut to reach the other side of town. “People think it’s a raceway, they are trying to avoid the traffic lights on Gene Autry so they turn on Via Escuela and they’re going like 60 to 75 miles an hour sometimes,” said Doug
Laswell of Palm Springs. Laswell walks his dogs in the morning, and watches people just speed through the 4-way stop. “I feel like the grumpy old man because when they’re coming through here I’m yelling at people slow down!” said Laswell. We watched as multiple vehicles failed to stop. Neighbors say its turning their quiet neighborhood into a dangerous speedway. “Same guy that ran the
stop sign the other day collided with another vehicle, that was in October of this year,” said Harold Baumea of Palm Springs. The posted speed limit is 25 miles per hour on Via Escuela, but it’s fairly clear after watching for a little while that many vehicles are traveling much faster than that. “They usually do 40, 50 sometimes more. When the police department is out here they will issue in an hour 6, 7 tickets,” said Baumea. Baumea has emailed the city council, mayor and chief of police about this problem. He kept a log tracking the amount of traffic, and found 1900 cars traveled on Via Escuela in a 12-hour period. Baumea would like to
see them slow down, “Traffic calming squares, four foot square bumps maybe about six different places on this street.” Laswell also has an idea, “I was just thinking today they need one of those things that says your speed is, or you’re going such and such miles an hour.” Most residents agree they want drivers to ease off the gas. Palm Springs Police say they have responded to traffic complaints in that area. The Palm Springs Engineering Department said resident’s neighborhood committees can apply for traffic calming projects through Palm Springs Neighborhood Involvement Committee using Measure J tax funds. Cathedral City Man Sentenced in Child Porn Case
By KMIR News Staff Los Angeles, Ca. - A 73-year-old man who was arrested while living in a Cathedral City storage container filled with child pornography was sentenced today in Los Angeles to 2 1/2 years in federal prison for possession of the illegal material. Richard L. Arlington -- a onetime Palm Springs roommate of a former college professor who was sent to prison last week for traveling overseas to have sex with children -- was also ordered to serve 10 years of supervised release after he gets out of prison and to register as a sex offender. Seated in a wheelchair, Arlington told U.S. District Judge PhiliS. Gutierrezez that if he hadn’t been under the ``influence’’ of Walter Lee Williams, a nowimprisoned ex-USC professor of gender and sexuality studies, he would not be in court. ``Because of this, I get in all this trouble,’’ Arlington said, adding that he had never before engaged in such behavior. Assistant U.S. Attorney Herbrina Sanders countered that decades-old material found last year in the rented storage unit with Arlington suggests the defendant had begun collecting
illicit material involving preteen boys many years ago. Sanders wrote in court papers that the trove included child erotica, ``pedophilosophy,’’ p h o t o s a n d A r l i n g t o n ’s handwritten journal containing detailed accounts of his sexual interest in young boys. Yet, the prosecutor wrote, there is no evidence Arlington has ever physically assaulted a child, although officials found a suggestive web chat between Arlington and a 14-year-old boy in the Philippines. A r l i n g t o n ’s a t t o r n e y, Georgina Wakefield, blamed Williams for her client’s legal problems. Williams ``was a role model and leader in the LGBT community ... and to my client,’’ she told the judge, proposing a sentence of time served. The former professor ``was the first openly gay man’’ Arlington had ever met, Wakefield said. ``I don’t think my client would be charged with this -- if not for Mr. Williams,’’ the defense attorney said. Arlington and Williams were both members of the Buddhist Universal Association in Los
Angeles, which espoused an ideology of ``extreme sexual freedoms,’’ according to the FBI. Arlington came to the attention of law enforcement last year after he was identified by a concerned citizen as someone who had the desire and opportunity to sexually abuse children, Sanders wrote in her sentencing papers. The prosecutor said Arlington had told the informer that his religion sanctioned sex
between adult males, ordained members and boys under the age of 12. Further investigation by the FBI found that Arlington possessed child pornography in his email account involving two boys under 12. Williams, who was once among the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted fugitives, was sentenced last week to five years behind bars for flying to the Philippines to have sex with underage boys he met online.
Williams taught anthropology, gender studies and history at USC for about 20 years until his resignation in February 2011. Under the guise of academic research, he traveled in the Philippines and elsewhere in Southeast Asia to have sex with underage boys, according to the FBI, which identified 10 victims between ages 9 and 17. New Sculpture Exhibition Debuts on El Paseo
By Desert Star Staff PALM DESERT, CA– The public is invited to a free ceremony celebrating the arrival of brand new sculptures on the median of Palm Desert’s worldfamous shopping thoroughfare as the City of Palm Desert marks the debut of the 2015/2016 El Paseo Exhibition on Monday, January 5 at 6 p.m. at The
Gardens on El Paseo. Featured artists will be introduced on the lawn in front of Saks Fifth Avenue. Palm Desert’s Art in Public Places Commission selected 18 artworks from among scores of artists who submitted their work for consideration. The 2015/2016 exhibition includes works from local Coachella
Valley artists as well sculptures created by artists from around the United States. Artists from Southern California created more than half of the sculptures. Included among the sculptures is a horse composed of rusted scrap metal, a spiny Joshua Tree crafted out of thousands of pieces of hand forged iron; and three brightly-
colored pinwheels that evoke flowers in a giant blue vase. The artworks will be displayed on pads in the El Paseo median for two years. Docent-led walking tours feature the Exhibition’s sculptures and the City’s public art collection. These tours are free and open to the public. The popular El Paseo
JOE COCKER DIES OF LUNG CANCER
on “Saturday Night Live.” Years later, Cocker told The Associated Press’ Mary Campbell that he was playing an imaginary piano and air guitar while singing - the elements that contributed to this unique style. “That was the frustration of not being able to play, really,” he said. Cocker was born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and was singing with local bands by the time he was a teenager. His early groups included Vance Arnold and the Avengers and the Grease Band, which backed him on “With A Little Help From My Friends.” Cocker moved to Crawford, Colorado, a town of fewer than 500 people, in the early 1990s. He and his wife, Pam, ran a children’s educational foundation - the Cocker Kids Foundation that raised funds for the town and schools, and ran the Mad Dog Cafe for several years in town, said Tom Wills, publisher of The North Fork Merchant Herald, a local community newspaper.
Wills said Cocker bought about 40 acres of property and built a hillside mansion - which he called Mad Dog Ranch - when he moved to Colorado. A group of Cocker’s friends gathered Monday at community radio station KVNF to play Cocker’s songs. “He had a long battle with cancer. We’re trying to do a little tribute for him,” said Bob Pennetta, a real estate agent and board member of the Cocker

But future success was more sporadic, and Cocker suffered from both drug and financial problems. He had a top 10 hit in 1975 on “You Are So Beautiful,” his voice cracking on the final, emotional note, and won a Grammy Award in 1983 for his “Up Where We Belong” duet with Jennifer Warnes, the theme of the movie “An Officer and a Gentleman.” His cover of Bryan Adams’ “When the Night Comes” was featured in the film “An Innocent Man” and became a top 20

single in 1990. Cocker, who received an Order of the British Empire in 2011 for his contribution to music, released 40 albums and continued to tour after the hits stopped. His other popular covers included “Feelin’ Alright,” ‘’The Letter” and “Cry Me a River,” a song previously recorded by one of Cocker’s greatest influences, Ray Charles. His voice, at times so worn it seemed in danger of shredding, was just one part of his legend. No Cocker fan could forget his intense, twitchy stage presence, his arms flailing, his hips stretching, his face contorting. Among those watching were Belushi, whose expert imitation became a feature of his early National Lampoon shows and eventually a part of popular history when he joined Cocker in 1976 for a duet of “Feelin’ Alright”

Coming Soon: Cuba Libre, with Real Cuban Rum
(AP Photo/Wilfredo Lee, File). FILE - In this Aug. 7, 2009 photo, a bottle of Havana Club rum, center, sits on a shelf for sale at Pantry II Liquors in Miami. U.S. rum aficionados are abuzz over the potential for making Cuba Libres with Cuban rum By Jennifer Kay Associated Press MIAMI (AP) - U.S. rum aficionados are abuzz over the possibility of mixing a Cuba Libre with authentic Cuban rum, now that they will be able to bring home liquor distilled in the communist nation. Relaxed limits on what licensed U.S. travelers can bring home mean that Americans will be able to enjoy small quantities of the liquor at home. But, with the embargo still in place, the rum won’t be flooding bars or the market. And it’s unclear what the news means for industry titan Bacardi, which was driven from its Cuba headquarters by the 1959 Castro revolution. In the past, Bacardi has left the door
open for a return to its homeland. But company representatives wouldn’t give details when asked Thursday what, if any, plans it has if the more than 50-yearold embargo on Cuban goods ends, now that President Barack Obama is working to normalize relations with the country. “We hope for meaningful improvements in the lives of the Cuban people and will follow any changes with great interest,” the company said in a statement. Bacardi said it’s waiting to see what effects thawing U.S.-Cuba relations may have. In 1997, Bacardi bought the legal rights to the recipe and name of Havana Club, a popular rum created in 1935 by a Cuban family who eventually fled the Castro revolution. Bacardi used
the recipe and name for a rum it distilled in Puerto Rico. But the name would become tangled in a long-running U.S. trademark fight with French wine and spirits maker Pernod Ricard. Pernod Ricard, in partnership with state-owned Cubaexport, already had been selling Havana Club rum, distilled in Cuba, in other countries. Nearly 20 years of legal arguments followed. Ultimately, a court ruled that Bacardi would be allowed to continue selling its Havana Club in the U.S. In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review that decision, giving Bacardi’s Havana Club rum its final green light for American sales. To differentiate its rum - and anticipating an eventual lifting of
the embargo - Pernod Ricard then announced it had registered the brand name Havanista in the U.S. to someday sell Cubandistilled rum on American soil. Today, Bacardi’s Havana Club, still distilled in Puerto Rico, is an exclusive, hard-to-find bottle, sold in limited quantities in Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan and Colorado. Bacardi, with global headquarters in Bermuda, sells more than 18 million cases of rum worldwide each year. The trickle of bottles that will soon come home in travelers’ luggage won’t offer much competition. Still, the new policy is an encouraging sign for Cuban distillers, said Robert A. Burr, founder of the Miami Rum Renaissance Festival. “It’s not a green light yet, but it’s a light at the end of the tunnel, the beginning of the end of this invisibility” in the U.S. marketplace, Burr said. Licensed U.S. travelers to Cuba will be able to bring home merchandise worth up to $400, of which $100 can be spent on alcohol and tobacco products combined. Like the rest of the eased trade, travel and currency restrictions announced Wednesday, the rum rules will take effect when official revise and publish the regulations perhaps weeks away. And U.S. law still prohibits Americans from circumventing the limits by buying rum - or cigars or other liquor - in other countries and bringing them home. Rum is a growing market in the United States. Imports have grown to $98.4 million in 2013 from $72.5 million in 2009, according to the Distilled
Spirits Council of the United States. Sales increased slightly last year to 25.6 million cases, with flavored and spiced rums accounting for more than half of those sold. Aside from their allure as forbidden fruit, Cuban rums are known for their lighter color and more delicate expression than the dark, heavy rums produced elsewhere in the Caribbean, Burr said. Rum is a popular export - it seems every Caribbean island and Central and South American country has its own - and consumers often remain loyal to brands even when far from home. “In Miami, the rum market is partially ethnic-based, with Colombians drinking Colombian rum and Venezuelans drinking Venezuelan rum,” Burr said. “Well, there are a lot of Cubans here, aren’t there? Some may say that if they drink Cuban rum, they’re just giving money to Castro, but I think some will say, ‘Finally, we can enjoy the rums of Cuba.’” In 2012, Bacardi Ltd. board chairman Facundo Bacardi, great-great-grandson of the company’s founder, told Cigar Aficionado that “offering the world a Cuban-sourced Bacardi rum - it will happen.” “A lot of companies will look at Cuba as a commercial opportunity, but we don’t necessarily look at it that way,” he said. “We see it from the perspective of Cuban exiles returning home.” Follow Jennifer Kay on Twitter at www.twitter.com/jnkay Source KMIR
North Korea Experiencing Severe Internet Outages
By Eric Tucker Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) - North Korea experienced sweeping and progressively worse Internet outages extending into Monday, with one computer expert saying the country’s online access is “totally down.” The White House and the State Department declined to say whether the U.S. government was responsible. President Barack Obama said Friday the U.S. government expected to respond to the hacking of Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., which he described as an expensive act of “cyber vandalism” that he blamed on North Korea. Obama did not say how the U.S. might respond, and it was not immediately clear if the Internet connectivity problems represented the retribution. The U.S. government regards its offensive cyber operations as highly classified. “We aren’t going to discuss, www.desertstarweekly.com
you know, publicly operational details about the possible response options or comment on those kind of reports in anyway except to say that as we implement our responses, some will be seen, some may not be seen,” State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said. North Korea has forcefully denied it was responsible for hacking into Sony. But the country has for months condemned the “The Interview,” a Sony satirical comedy about a plot to assassinate the North Korean leader. Sony canceled plans to release the movie after a group of hackers made terroristic threats against theaters that planned to show it. North Korean diplomat Kim Song, asked Monday about the Internet attack, told The Associated Press: “I have no information.” Ivan Simonovic, the U.N. assistant secretary-general for human rights, told reporters he
didn’t want to speculate about the nature of the Internet outages but said he hoped it would be “thoroughly investigated.” Doug M a d o r y, the director of Internet analysis at Dyn Research, an Internet performance company, said Monday the problems began over the weekend and grew progressively worse to the point that “North Korea’s totally down.” North Korea is one of the least connected countries in the world. Few North Koreans have access to computers, and even those who do are typically able to connect only to a domestic intranet. Though North Korea is equipped for broadband Internet, only a small, approved segment of the population has any access to the World Wide Web. More than a million people, however, are now using mobile phones in North Korea. The network covers most major cities but users cannot call outside the country or receive calls from outside. December 24, 2014
With the current outages, Madory said, “They have left the global Internet and they are gone until they come back.” Another Internet technology service, Arbor Networks, which protects companies against hacker attacks, said its monitoring detected denial-ofservice attacks aimed at North Korea’s infrastructure starting Saturday and persisting Monday. Such attacks transmit so much spurious data traffic to Internet equipment that it becomes overwhelmed, until the attacks stop or the spurious traffic can be filtered and discarded to allow normal connections to resume. Given North Korea’s limited connectivity and lack of Internet sophistication, it would be relatively simple for a band of hacktivists to shut down online access, and it should not be assumed that the U.S. government had any part, said Dan Holden, director of security research at Arbor Networks.
“Anyone of us that was upset because we couldn’t watch the movie, you could do that. Their Internet is just not that sophisticated,” Holden said. Madory said one benign explanation for the problem might be that a router suffered a software glitch, though a cyberattack involving North Korea’s Internet service was also a possibility. Routing instabilities are not uncommon, but instead of getting better, as one might expect, “it’s getting worse, getting progressively degraded,” Madory said. “This doesn’t fit that profile,” of an ordinary routing problem, he said. “This shows something getting progressively worse over time.” Associated Press writers Edith M. Lederer and Cara Anna at the United Nations contributed to this report. Source KMIR

Over here you’ve got Santa’s stagecoach,” showed Irwin. “There’s lots of new things at Robolights this year, and some of the major attractions to is that I’ve actually got mechanical artworks that revolve that are made out fullsized amusement park ride.
So people are you know looking for something unique this holiday season, this is the best place to come to. Here you’ll find all the latest and hottest gadgets that have been professionally microwaved by your professional microwave operator.” “This is the pink skullhouse. You won’t find a better pink skull anywhere in the world, and it’s signed and dated by the artist.” “This is a really great view of the tower of gifts over here. So people can sit up on Santa’s hoverthrone and really ponder the tons of stuff they’re going to get during the holiday,” said Irwin. ‘Are you making a point on consumerism?’ Haha, but in a happy way.” “Over here is Santa’s battle wagon. When people say why, I always say why not. That’s what I wake up to every day, why not. The biggest motivating factor behind it is how happy it makes people. It’s whimsical, it’s imaginative and creative and people really love that, and it’s not something you’re really going to find anywhere else that I know of,” said Irwin. Robolights is open from 4 to 9:30 each night until January 6th. It’s located on Granvia Valmonte in the Movie Colony neighborhood of Palm Springs. In past years, the display has attracted 20,000 people, and this year they’re expecting even more. Source KMIR
Robolights in Palm Springs Attracts a Crowd
By Angela Monroe PALM SPRINGS -- Each night this month KMIR is bringing you a holiday lights display from around the valley. This one is a little out of the ordinary. For more than a quarter century, Palm Springs artist Kenny Irwin Jr., has opened his unique light display to the public. The lights display encompasses four full acres took 8,000 hours of effort and has 8.4 million twinkling lights, but it’s not the numbers that makes this display unique. You’ve got to see it to believe it. We took a tour through the installation with the artist. Let’s go inside Robolights. “This is

Robolights, the nation’s largest residential light display in the whole country. I started it 28 years. I wanted to do something in the most positive way I humanly could, which was not just create a light display, but create an experience like no other so basically this is what Robolights is all about to instead of cursing the darkness to light it one light at a time,” said the artist and creator of Robolights, Kenny Irwin, Jr. “This is a tunnel that people can go through, it’s the Megamassive inflatables. Over 200 inflatables jammed, crammed and slammed in as tight of a space as possible.

May the Spirit of Your Holidays Be Blithe
L-R: Susan Louise O’Connor (standing), Sandra Shipley, Charles Edwards, Angela Lansbury, Charlotte Parry and Simon Jones in the North American tour of Noël Coward’s “Blithe Spirit” Photo by Joan Marcus If my mother were still here, I know what I would give her for Christmas—a ticket to see Angela Lansbury in Noel Coward’s frothy comedy romp “Blithe Spirit” currently delighting audiences at the Ahmanson Theatre in downtown L.A. Mom, an avid mystery buff, never missed watching Angela on Sunday night in the long-running TV hit ”Murder She Wrote.” She absolutely loved the show and its star, so when my husband and I saw “Blithe Spirit“ I almost felt that Mom was sitting next to us, enjoying the play right along with us. Thank you, Madame Arcati, aka Angela Lansbury, for conjuring up more than one blithe spirit on opening night... In her films, Lansbury could be an awful person, like the devious, evil mother in “The Manchurian Candidate” or as the house maid in “Gaslight”
with Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer. These roles earned her Oscar nods, but it was in stage musicals like “Mame” and “Gypsy” that she got the chance to sing and make audiences care about her. And of course we all loved her as Jessica Fletcher in TVs “Murder She Wrote” or in Disney films like “Bed-knobs and Broomsticks” and as the voice of the motherly teapot in “Beauty and the Beast” where she sang “Tale as Old as Time.” She has been a luminous star on TV and the big screen, but with five Tony Awards, it is on stage that she truly shines. Watching her perform, it’s hard to believe that she’s 89 years young and has been acting for 70 years. Wow, people 50 years younger might find it hard to keep up with her. In fact, as Madame Arcati in “Blithe Spirit,” she brought down the house when
Angela Lansbury Photo by Joan Marcus
she danced around the stage before going into her trance. Set designer Simon Higlett also nearly brings down the house before the final curtain. The sophisticated set, coupled with lighting by Mark Johnathan and sound by Ben and Max Ringham, combine to create the flawless setting for a séance that conjures up Charles Condomine’s late wife Elvira (Jemima Rooper), much to his total shock and surprise. Charles Edwards, who plays Lady Edith’s publisher lover in TVs “Downtown Abbey,” is perfect as the dashing writer, Charles Condomine. In fact, every role in the play, from Angela Lansbury as Madame Arcati and Charlotte Parry as Charles’ current wife Ruth to Susan Louise O’Conner as the dotty little housemaid, Edith and Simon Jones and Sandra Shiplely as séance guests Dr. and Mrs. Bradmanm are, as the Brits would say, “Spot on.” While “Blithe Spirit” is a light-
hearted, truly amusing romp, one senses an even deeper message at its core, which is, true love is impossible to attain even though everyone seeks to love and be loved in return. According to Barry Day, Editor of “The Letters of Noel Coward,” the gifted playwright was asked, late in life, to sum up, his life in one word. Coward replied, “The answer is Love. To know that you are among people you love and who love you. That has made all the successes wonderful—much more wonderful than they’d have been anyway. And that’s it, really.” “Blithe Spirit,” at the Ahmanson Theatre, 135 N. Grand Ave., downtown LA. through Jan. 18. For tickets and info call (213) 972-4400 or online at www. centertheatregroup.org.
the beautiful, tuneful New Year’s Concert, “Salute to Vienna” at the Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. “Salute to Vienna “ has been celebrating the New Year’s entry for 20 years in Vienna, and this year marks the production’s 13th return to the Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall. The concert is an elegant way to enjoy lilting Strauss’s waltzes like the “Blue Danube” plus waltz and operetta favorites from “Die Fledermaus” and “The Merry Widow.” Viennese performers include soprano Lilia Galambos. Tenor Eugene Amesmann and baritone Thomas Weinhappel who will perform alongside members of the exquisite Europaballelt St. Polten and International Champion Ballroom Dancers. •••••••••••••• This is a lovely way to welcome in 2015 with music and dance. Americana Masterworks Sparkle Anew This year has seen the reissue of four bona fide Americana masterworks. Anyone looking how to spend those valuable holiday gift cards should consider the deluxe and expanded reissues from Old 97’s and the Jayhawks.
Artist: Old 97’s Title: Hitchhike to Rhome (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: The Jayhawks, Wilco, the Bottle Rockets Tell me more: As great as “Hitchhike to Rhome” was upon its initial release way back in 1994, the 2-disc 20th anniversary
reissue of the seminal Old 97’s debut is even better. One of the alternative country’s most prolific and consistent artists over the past two decades, the Dallas. Texas-spawned outfit gets it right on every track on the album, which was recorded over a mere three days. Now masterfully remixed by Rip Rowan, “Hitchhike to Rhome” boasts nuanced tracks (“St. Ignatius,” “Wish the Worst”), flatout barn burners (“504,” “4 Leaf Clover”) and groundbreaking songs that masterfully blend bluegrass or honky tonk with indie-rock styling (the mandolinanchored “Doreen” and “If My
Heart Was a Car”) and rousing covers (including a killer take on Merle Haggards “Mama Tried”). The plethora of bonus tracks and demos that fill the second disc provides loads of reasons to celebrate Old 97s’ early work. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.
studio LPs dating back to their eponymous debut released in 1986. But 2014 has been a particularly great year for fans of the Jayhawks thanks to the release of deluxe editions of three of their most beloved albums (1997s “Sound of Lies,” 2000s “Smile” and 2003s “Rainy-Day Music”). For those who love Artist: The Jayhawks authentic power-pop (think Big Titles: Sound of Lies, Star), tuneful alternative country Smile, Rainy-Day Music (the Flying Burrito Brothers You might like if you come to mind) and folk rock enjoy: Gram Parsons, (classic Buffalo Springfield). The Ryan Adams, Big Star Jayhawks explored a vast region Tell me more: Formed in of Americana across six-year Minneapolis back in 1985, the span and created some of the Jayhawks have issued eight best songs in memory along the
way. Recordings of songs such as “Smile,” “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me,” “Big Star” and “The Man Who Loved Life” continue to fully resonate today. A myriad of bonus and previously-unreleased tracks fill all three expanded releases (released on audio CD in July and via two-LP vinyl sets in September). Southern California audiences can catch the Gary Louris-led Jayhawks when they perform in Los Angeles (Jan. 10), Solana Beach (Jan. 11) or San Juan Capistrano (Jan. 12). NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. Ex-officer not Charged in Fatal Milwaukee Shooting By Todd Richmond Associated Press MILWAUKEE (AP) - A white Milwaukee police officer fired after killing a mentally ill black man in April won’t face criminal charges, the top county prosecutor said Monday, a decision that prompted the U.S. attorney to later announce a federal investigation of the incident. Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm said Christopher Manney won’t be charged because he shot Dontre Hamilton in self-defense. Manney is at least the third white police officer across the country to avoid charges in the past month after a confrontation that led to a black man’s death. “(Manney’s) use of force was privileged and justified,” Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm said during a news conference. “On a human level, of course, it’s tragic ... (but) our job is not to tell people necessarily what they want to hear.” After waiting eight months for the decision, Hamilton’s family reacted with disappointment and anger. At an emotional news conference on the steps of the federal courthouse, family
attorneys said they had called for a federal investigation. They also urged that protests be peaceful “so as not to dishonor Dontre’s name and the Hamilton family name.” But Hamilton’s brother Nate spoke bitterly, saying the family had “cried too long” and “we don’t have to be the voice of reason.” “We need to stop the violence in our communities so we can get rid of these pigs that kill us,” he said to shouts and applause. “Because that’s what they are. They feed, they feed off of us. And we can’t let them do that no more.” His remarks came just two days after two New York City police officers were ambushed in their patrol car. Police said that attack was carried out by a man who posted online about putting “wings on pigs.” Police Chief Edward Flynn said he was disturbed by Hamilton’s choice of words. “I would like to chalk it up to the emotion of the moment, but we don’t need people implying or expressing a need for violence against police,” he said. Jon Safran, a Hamilton family attorney, later said Nate
Hamilton doesn’t condone “any type of violence” and the family was dealing with “great anxiety and frustration.” Hamilton’s family has led mostly peaceful protests in the months since his death. They took to the streets again Monday afternoon, with Nate Hamilton leading a crowd as it marched through intersections chanting “Arrest the police!” and “Whose streets? Our streets!” The group eventually dispersed without incident. Later Monday evening, more protesters gathered in a pouring rain at the park where Manney shot Dontre Hamilton. Nate Hamilton told the group to remain peaceful because media outlets are looking to broadcast violence and the protesters need to be smarter than that. “Don’t nobody be violent,” he said. That crowd left peacefully as well. About eight hours after Chisholm announced his decision, U.S. Attorney James Santelle said the Department of Justice, along with his office and the FBI, will conduct a review to determine if there was a violation of federal civil rights law. Manney’s attorney didn’t return a message
seeking comment. Manney shot Hamilton, 31, after responding to a call of a man sleeping in a downtown park. Manney said Hamilton resisted when he tried to frisk him. The two exchanged punches before Hamilton got hold of Manney’s baton and hit him on the neck, the former officer has said. Manney then shot Hamilton 14 times. Several witnesses told police they saw Hamilton holding Manney’s baton aggressively before Manney shot him, according to Chisholm’s report. Police said they have no video of the incident. Chisholm consulted with police use-of-force experts, who concluded Manney’s conduct was justified. Emanuel Kapelsohn of the Peregrine Corp. said all the shots were fired in 3 or 4 seconds and there was no evidence that Manney continued firing after Hamilton hit the ground. Manney suffered minor injuries, including a bite to his right thumb, a neck strain and a neck contusion, the report said. He was treated for postconcussion syndromes, a mild traumatic brain injury and had physical therapy for bicep and
rotator cuff injuries, the report said. Flynn fired Manney in October. He said then that Manney correctly identified Hamilton as mentally ill but ignored department policy and treated him as a criminal by frisking him. Hamilton’s family said he suffered from schizophrenia and had recently stopped taking his medication. The Milwaukee Police Association condemned Manney’s firing as a political move, and members voted no confidence in Flynn soon after the firing, which Manney has appealed. On Monday, the union praised Chisholm’s decision, saying the officer had “no other option” in the situation. Hamilton’s death preceded the killings of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York City, but the case hasn’t attracted as much attention as those fatal encounters with police. Associated Press writers Scott Bauer in Madison, Wisconsin, Carrie Antlfinger in Milwaukee and Doug Glass in Minneapolis contributed to this report. Source KMIR
By Angela Monroe PALM SPRINGS -- One of the most popular places in the Coachella Valley the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is even more popular in the winter months. Among the many festivities held at the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, Santa Claus made his way up the tram Saturday. The big guy was there until the late afternoon, much to the delight of many excited kids. “Santa was here at the Tram today and met hundreds of kids and passed out candy canes. So, that was another official event here at the tram’s holiday festivities,” said Greg Purdy with Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. The tram is always a festive place to be during the holidays. Multiple events takes place including the tree lighting ceremony, choirs from valley high schools come to sing, and of course Santa makes his much anticipated
appearance for the children. For valley residents who have never experienced a white Christmas, the top of the tram is a winter wonderland. “In Palm Springs the concept of a white Christmas doesn’t seem very feasible to a lot of people but when you’re up here at 8,516 ft you have a white Christmas. The Snow is on the ground and in the trees and people come here from all over the world actually. When they visit Palm Springs they have to come to the Tram, and it feels like Christmas when you’re up here,” said Purdy. Whether you’re there to enjoy holiday festivities, play in the snow, have a meet and greet with Santa, it’s seemingly impossible to go to the tram and not get in to the holiday spirit. “People say that when they come to the Tram, they’re suddenly in the Christmas spirit. With all the things we have planned, the decorations, the
snow Santa, the music, you can’t help but get in to the holiday spirit. So, we invite everybody up to continue that all the way through New Year’s weekend and we promise a wonderful
for everybody that visits,” said Purdy. The Tramway is on holiday hours which are 8 am to 8 pm with the last tram heading down at 9:45.
Those hours run until January 4th, and there will also be ride and dine on Christmas Day. Tram restaurants opening at 8 in the morning. Source KMIR

Abrams directed the first two films in the rebooted “Star Trek” series. Roberto Orci was the cowriter on those first two films.
He was slated to step into the director’s chair after Abrams left to work on “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” but he exited that role in early December. Orci will still serve as a writer and producer on the film. It’s slated for a 2016 release. Source KMIR
