“Come Fly with Me”
By Desert Star Staff JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort is unveiling their “Sinatra Smash” Happy Hour in honor of hosting Frank Sinatra’s last live performance at the property! The hotel now pays tribute to Frank Sinatra daily by raising a flag in true Sinatra-style to signal the new Sinatra Smash Happy Hour every day at 4.05 pm - 4.11 pm in the lobby bar, Aquifer65. As you know, the Coachella Valley has been home to some of the most notable names in entertainment, including Ol’ Blues Eyes himself. They gave his very last live performance in the property’s
Grand Ballroom in 1995, which recently underwent a renovation and was renamed the “Sinatra Ballroom” in his honor. Legend has it that when Mr. Sinatra was home just a few short miles away in Rancho Mirage, he would raise a flag atop a tall flagpole every afternoon, signifying to his friends & neighbors that it was time to go to Frank’s house for Cocktail Hour. The hotel pays homage to this tradition. The daily ritual features two Frank Sinatra songs, “Come Fly with Me” and “The Best is Yet to Come,” which was the last tune he ever sang live in a performance that took place in the hotel’s very
own ballroom. In addition, the hotel invites travelers and locals alike to enjoy a sampling of the “Sinatra Smash” cocktail and cozy up to a large poster of Sinatra! The Sinatra Smash is garnished with two blackberries and a sprig of mint. Ingredients are 1.5 oz Jack Daniels Old No. 7, 1.5 oz sweet and sour, 3/4 oz Creme de Cassis, 1/4 oz vanilla-infused simple syrup & 5 blackberries. The drink also debuts on the cocktail menu for $17. What Does Redistricting Mean for the Coachella Valley, CA? By Desert Star Staff Redistricting will likely change the congressional districts of the Coachella Valley. Currently, the district covers the areas of Riverside County from Beaumont to the Arizona state line. In the final maps, the city of Palm Desert and other east valley communities will fall within the district, with the rest of the Coachella Valley falling outside of the district to the south. There is a chance of some changes being made in some cases, but the results are uncertain. The primary objective of the process is to draw election districts that reflect the geographic elements and neighborhoods. The districts are often based on a community of interest, geographical or socioeconomic. The public can participate by drawing maps and attending public hearings held regularly. The commission’s website (http:// www.wedrawthelinesca.org/) will provide answers to some frequently asked questions. While redistricting may change the legislature’s composition, it is unlikely to impact local politics significantly. One of the biggest
questions is how the new maps will affect the region. In Riverside County, supervisors are looking at redrawing district lines for their representation in county government. The Coachella Valley is in District 4, which would grow to make room for the new districts. The new sections will include the city of Palm Springs and surrounding areas. They will not alter the boundaries of the city of Riverside, which provides for the entire county. Redistricting will change the political landscape in the Coachella Valley. The new map will put Palm Springs, Menifee, and Corona in the same district. The rest of the valley will be placed in a community with eastern San Bernardino and Imperial counties. “Several of us had said that’s not a good final solution,” said Ray Kennedy, one of the 14 commissioners working on redrawing the state’s district lines. He’s a former Palm Springs resident living in Morongo Valley and the only representative from the Inland Empire. The current Coachella Valley congressional district extends from Beaumont,
Riverside County, to the Arizona state line. But the new drafts propose to split the Coachella Valley into two separate congressional sections. The former would be a Republican district, and the new one would put U.S. Rep. Raul Ruiz in a Democratic community. The Citizens Redistricting Commission must approve the new maps. Currently, the Coachella Valley is part of Senate District 28 and covers aspects
of southwest Riverside County. The new maps show that Coachella and Indio would be in a Republican district. It could also mean that some Republican representatives will lose their seats in the state’s U.S. House of Representatives. The district would remain in place for the next ten years. The new congressional district will have several new boundaries. The Coachella Valley congressional district
would no longer be whole, but two assembly districts would be. The current state Senate district covers the entire valley and parts of Lake Elsinore and Temecula. The existing state senator districts still encompass the region. And while the region is split, the Palm Springs city mayor has expressed hope that the area will remain whole in the final maps.

The Ho-Ho History of the Christmas Card By Desert Star Staff While you may love your holiday traditions, you may not have given much thought to the origins of these customs. When it comes to sending Christmas cards, this long-standing tradition has a fascinating history. Did you know that these seasonal greetings date back to the 1840s? The annual custom was started by trendsetter Queen Victoria herself, whose published engraving featuring the winter wonderland at Windsor inspired her subjects to follow suit. Stateside, Annie Oakley was another Christmas card pioneer, sending the first known personalized Christmas card in 1891.

4 Ways to Go Green If You’re Not Ready for an Electric Vehicle
By Desert Star Staff Countless headlines suggest you have to drive a battery-powered electric vehicle (EV) if you care about the planet. Yet consumers, including many who want to be “green,” are still opting for gasoline-powered vehicles 98 percent of the time. What’s standing in their way? --Cost. It may cost as much as $10,000 or $15,000 more up-front for a batteryelectric car compared with a similar gas-powered car. --Charging. Installing a home charger that’s required to run a EV can cost an additional $1,000 to $3,000. Additionally, a home charger may not be possible for those who park on the street or live

Even with a relatively robust 200-mile range, EV owners must plan carefully for charging breaks every few hours of driving. It may take 30 to 60 minutes to add enough battery power for another couple hours of driving. Bigger battery packs can give longer range, but also longer charging times. If any of these realities are the deal-breakers preventing you from going green behind the wheel -- relax! There are still at least four good alternatives to EVs that will still help the environment without breaking the bank.
Hybrids: Hybrid technology has been around since the late 1990s. Hybrids combine a smaller gas engine with batterypowered electric motors for better fuel economy. Hybrid sedans like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord or Hyundai Sonata now average more than 50 miles per gallon. The Toyota Prius Eco gets 56 mpg in combined city-highway driving, according to fueleconomy.gov. A 50-mpg hybrid replacing a 30-mpg vehicle will save $625 a year in fuel costs, or
$3,100 over five years. You’ll save even more if your tradein gets less than 30 mpg!
Vehicles: Fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are electric vehicles powered by a reaction from hydrogen fuel and oxygen, making water vapor the only emission. The 2021 Toyota Mirai, for example, has a range of more than 400 miles, compared to 200-300 for most newer EVs. FCEVs are refilled at a station, like the gas stations you’re used to. The main challenge is a lack of hydrogen infrastructure. California is the only state with a robust network of fueling stations -- but more are on the way.

New Rankings Show CA Last in Available Housing, Air Pollution
By Desert Star Staff The U.S. death rate soared 17% from 2019 to 2020, with COVID-19 primarily responsible, according to the new America’s Health Rankings 2021 annual report from UnitedHealthcare. The report covered a wide range of health indicators and said Californians smokeless, live longer and have fewer chronic conditions than people in other states. However, the Golden State ranks worst in the nation for air pollution. Will Barrett, national senior director for clean air advocacy with the American Lung Association, said the state needs to make it easier to walk or take public transit. “The transportation sector generates approximately 80% of the smog-forming pollution in California, and also about half of the greenhouse gas
emissions that increase climate change,” Barrett reported. California struggles with many social determinants of health, ranking 49th for severe housing problems and 43rd for income inequality. On the plus side, researchers found binge drinking has dropped as bars closed during the lockdown, and more people report being in good overall health. Cancer diagnoses decreased by 7%, but routine cancer screenings dropped, even more, leaving experts to wonder if there are simply more undiagnosed cases. Dr. Nicole Brady, chief medical officer for UnitedHealthcare, said everyone should dial-up their doctor. “Get back in to see our providers,” Brady urged. “Have our usual annual wellness visits with them, and make
sure that we’re up-to-date on all of our health screenings, like breast cancer and colon cancer screenings.”
The report ranked California Disclosure: United dead last for colorectal cancer Healthcare contributes screenings and 48th for primary to our fund for reporting care providers per capita. on Health Issues
Palm Springs Film Awards Ceremony Canceled Due to COVID Concerns
By Desert Star Staff The Palm Springs International Film Festival has canceled its annual black-tie awards ceremony scheduled for Thursday, January 6. 2022. This decision is due to rising concerns about Covid and the more easily spread new kid on the block Omicron variant. In addition, this is the second year in a row; the festival has canceled its in-person awards ceremony due to COVID-19 concerns. The Palm Springs Film Awards ceremony is held in January every year and is one of the most significant events in the film world. In addition, the show is held in Palm Springs just before the Oscars and
Golden Globes are announced, so the decision is a significant deal for the film industry.
In a statement from PSIFF: The Film Awards will not occur on Thursday, January 6, 2022. We are taking this action due to the recent spike in COVID cases and out of an abundance of caution to ensure the health and safety of the honorees, patrons, and staff. The Palm Springs Film Awards are one of the largest events in the film world, with 2500 guests and more than 1000 staff in the room. The screening portion of the Palm Springs International Film Festival will take place from
January 7 through January 17, 2022, requiring proof of vaccination and wearing a mask. The Film Awards will
partner with Entertainment Tonight to celebrate this year’s honorees, with details to follow. Those who purchased
tickets for the Film Awards will be reimbursed. We hope to return to the Film Awards to an in-person event in 2023.

Kelce Is on GOAT Pace By Desert Star Staff On Thursday, Travis Kelce hauled in 10 catches for a career-high 191 yards and the tying and winning touchdowns in the Chiefs’ 34-28 overtime victory over the Chargers. On one of the few teams with no clear WR2, the 32-year-old has become Patrick Mahomes’ go-to second option behind Tyreek Hill. Kelce is the best tight end this season and arguably already in the top 10 all-time positions. The question is whether he could earn the label as the greatest TE ever at his current pace. • Kelce ranks first among TEs this season in receptions (83), yards (1,066), and targets (122),

and second in TDs (7). • He’s put up 1,000+ receiving yards for six consecutive seasons. No TE in NFL history has had more than five. • In 125 career games, Kelce has 695 receptions (7th all-time among TEs), 8,947 receiving yards (6th), and 55 TDs (9th). • His 12.9 yards per catch ranks seventh all-time among TEs. The six-time Pro Bowler has averaged 1,118 receiving yards in his first sevenplus seasons, a pace that would put him ahead of alltime leader Tony Gonzalez (15,127) by the time he’s 38. After signing a fouryear, $57.3 million contract extension in August,
Kelce is tied to the Chiefs through 2025. December 24, 2021

How to Improve Your Financial Health
Y
FAMILY FEATURES
our financial health is just as important as your physical and mental health. Money affects almost every aspect of your life and can be the determining factor in many of your dayto-day decisions. Being financially healthy isn’t just about how much money you have in the bank. It also encompasses your financial capability and how you feel about money or how money makes you feel. Start by doing a self-check to determine your financial health. Look at where your accounts currently stand, including the statuses and balances. The balances in your accounts can be used to calculate your net worth, which is a numerical indicator of your overall financial health from an accounting standpoint. Also consider your feelings and relationship with money, including the emotions you experience when someone brings up topics involving money. Then determine if you are a saver or spender. Understanding how you feel about your finances and why you have these feelings can help you improve your overall financial health along with these tips from the financial experts at kinly, a financial services company helping Black America build generational wealth.
Set Financial Goals
To improve your financial health, start by setting short-term, mid-term and long-term S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time bound) goals. S.M.A.R.T. goal setting can help you be more specific, provide a way to measure your progress, allow you to create a plan to make things more achievable, ensure your goals are in line with other objectives and provide deadlines, so your financial goals don’t get lost in the shuffle of day-to-day life.

Create a Money Plan
A money plan is a guide that details how you want to use your income monthly. This plan should consider the money you want to save and the money you want to spend. As you add your list of expenses, use this opportunity to review where your money is going and if your spending is in line with the financial goals you’ve set. This is also an opportunity to look for ways to reduce or eliminate spending so your money can be used for things that are important to you, like saving for a down payment on a car or home, or purchasing an item from your wish list,
Expand Your Financial Knowledge
Explore ways to become more comfortable with money and take control of your financial future. Your relationship with money and how you feel about it make up your money story. Money stories involve emotions, beliefs and experiences with money from childhood to adulthood. Start by spending 10-20 minutes each day exploring topics around money or personal finances to help build your knowledge base. You can do this by
listening to podcasts, reading books, browsing reputable personal finance websites or exploring financial education resources provided by your financial institution. If you need a more personalized approach to developing a better relationship with your finances, explore working with a financial coach. Your financial coach can work with you on a range of fundamental money management skills. For example, a financial coach can help you overcome financial anxiety or come up with a debt repayment strategy. The coach can help guide, teach, empower and challenge you to grow into a savvy money user. When determining your financial health, remember personal finance is personal. The financial decisions you make today impact your overall financial health. Determine what financial success looks like for you and incorporate mindfulness, resources and other financially beneficial strategies to help improve your relationship with your finances. Kids’ Consumption of “Unboxing Videos” Raises Holiday Expectations By Roz Brown/PNS Christmas with the kids would not be complete without the occasional meltdown. Still, it turns out the most demanding kids are often those who spend a lot of time watching “unboxing” videos, also known as online product reviews. Harsha Ganga, associate professor of advertising at the University of Colorado, said videos showing children unpacking shiny new toys are some of the most popular. Nearly 80% of kids ages four to 10 watch them regularly. However, he cautioned if yours is one of them, know there might be a correlation to unwelcome behavior. “The more likely they are to demand those toys, and if parents say ‘no,’ they’re more www.desertstarweekly.com
likely to get upset and show displeasure and emotional distress,” Ganga explained. Recent estimates showed most American children spend about three hours a day watching television, but screen time also skyrocketed during the pandemic. Combined with computer time, video games or smartphones, it can total five to seven hours a day. Ganga noted unboxing videos typically show products in a favorable light and can have the same effect as advertising. He advised it is essential for parents to explain television content to children, pointing out commercials are designed to encourage consumerism. “If we’re teaching the really young children that
toys and buying things is the way to be happy, that’s something we have to, as parents, also question, right?” December 24, 2021

The real property described above is being sold subject to the right of redemption. The redemption period within which real property may be redeemed ends 90 days after the sale. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of the resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable,

Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the schedule sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (916) 939-0772 (Nationwide Posting and Publication), or visit this internet website www.nationwideposting. com, using the file number assigned to this case TS# 2021-4148 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than fifteen (15) days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than forty-five (45) days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. 3rd Booster Vaccine - What Makes the Omicron Virus Different
By Desert Star Staff The Omicron Virus and Delta are two variants of the same virus. Both have been found in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Both are incredibly infectious and can cause severe disease. However, the Omicron Virus is significantly more deadly. The Delta Virus is more contagious than the Omicron - and both are very dangerous. The researchers believe that these differences make the Omicron Virus so different. Omicron has been
identified as the second COVID-19 variant, and scientists are still investigating how it differs from the Delta. However, they say that the newer, more transmissible variants will spread faster and further. Since Omicron is more difficult to eradicate than the original coronavirus, it is crucial to understand how the virus works. In addition, the Omicron Virus has a higher virulence factor than Delta, which means it’s more effective at spreading to new areas of the world. Fortunately, it is not difficult
to identify Omicron Virus. The virus’ genetic makeup is mainly unchanged, making the transmission of the disease extremely difficult. Unlike Delta, the Omicron Virus is very contagious and has an advantage in the UK. As a result, the disease is spreading more quickly there. It’s best to be protected from the Omicron Virus by following the vaccine guidelines and getting the proper vaccination. Breaking news Omicron variant detected in Palm Springs wastewater.

Take Steps to Support Literacy
8 ways to inspire children to read FAMILY FEATURES
R
eading is a foundation for learning, yet a vast gap exists in access to books for low-income neighborhoods. According to the Handbook of Literacy Research, in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio of books per child is just one age-appropriate book for every 300 children. Without books in the home, children lack the opportunity to practice reading skills and are exposed to fewer opportunities to build their vocabularies. While these limitations can hinder personal performance, multiple studies correlate low literacy rates with social concerns like elevated drop-out rates, reliance on welfare programs and criminal activity. Literacy is a cause that affects the community as a whole. Learn how you can champion literacy in your community with these tips:
Give Books to Children The joy of receiving and opening a gift is exciting in its own right, but a book is a gift that keeps giving. You can make a book gift extra special by choosing a topic or theme that has special meaning, such as a place you’d like to visit together or a beloved character you enjoy incorporating into your make-believe playtime with the child. As a bonus, if it’s age appropriate, read the book together for the first time so it always carries a special memory.
Visit the Library Libraries can be awe-inspiring places for kids. The wall-to-wall books represent thousands of possibilities. With so many options to choose from, you can introduce children to the delight of discovering different genres, enchanting topics and favorite authors who keep you coming back for more. When children have their own library cards, they can practice the grown-up process of checking out and caring for books. What’s more, honoring due dates helps teach responsibility. Marking that date on the calendar is a fun way to build anticipation toward the next visit.
Support Organizations That Promote Literacy Conducting your business with companies that share your commitment to literacy is a way to inspire reading on a larger scale. One example is The UPS Store, which created the Toys for Tots Literacy Program in partnership with the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to provide disadvantaged children with direct access to books and educational resources that enhance their ability to read and communicate effectively. You can donate at participating locations or contribute online.
Create Reading-Inspired Traditions Children thrive on routines and rituals, and incorporating books into special moments can be an especially effective way to establish positive connections with books and the joy of reading. At home, traditions might be as simple as bedtime stories or reading parties where the whole family dons pajamas early and gathers in a room to read together, whether quietly or out loud. You can also tie reading traditions to special celebrations, like reading a favorite story together before heading to bed on the eve of a birthday or holiday.
Participate in Events Supporting Literacy
Show your support by attending and participating in events that showcase the importance of reading. One example is the 133rd Annual Rose Parade on New Year’s Day. As the literacy sponsor, The UPS Store will have a float bearing the theme, “Rise, Shine & Read,” which is intended to inspire kids to rise up and let themselves shine through the power of literacy. The whimsical design features a colorful, spectacled rooster sporting a plaid waistcoat and bow tie, standing atop a stack of books and reading to his family of chicks. The parade appearance is the culmination of the annual donation efforts to support the Toys for Tots Literacy Program.
Encourage Kids to Get Hands-On

Recognizing not all kids have access to books at home, you can help promote an interest in reading by creating a mini library within your neighborhood. Create a small structure that will protect books from the elements and spread the word that the contents are free for the taking. Encourage users to return books when they’re done so another child can enjoy them and invite neighbors to donate their gently used books to help fill your library.
Model Good Reading Habits for Kids
Reading a book is one way to demonstrate literacy, but kids can also develop a love for reading and put their comprehension skills into practice by adapting their favorite stories for playtime. That might mean acting out a different ending for a favorite story or drawing a picture from a scene they remember best. You can also promote literacy by encouraging kids to write songs or their own short stories, which they can illustrate for a finished book to share with others.
Start a Neighborhood Library
Children learn from the examples set by trusted grown-ups. Sharing your love of reading with a child demonstrates you value learning and education. You can encourage children to mimic your interest in reading by sharing stories about the books you enjoyed most when you were their age and choosing to spend quiet time reading together in place of screen time.
