Fauci: “Get Vaccinated”

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

“I want to encourage everyone to get vaccinated” By Desert Star Staff Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci and other top health officials have been inoculated with Moderna’s newly approved Covid-19 vaccine, kickstarting its rollout. The top US virologist

received the jab along with Health Secretary Alex Azar on Tuesday morning. Fauci said he was taking the vaccine on camera “as a symbol to the rest of the country.” “I want to encourage everyone who has the

Gov. Newsom Selects Alex Padilla as CA’s Next US Senator

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today announced the selection of California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to be California’s next United States Senator, filling the term being vacated by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. Padilla, who previously served as a Los Angeles City Councilman and State Senator, and is a national leader in the fight to expand voting rights, will become the first Latino to represent California in the United States Senate and the first Southern Californian nearly three decades. “The son of Mexican immigrants — a cook and

house cleaner — Alex Padilla worked his way from humble beginnings to the halls of MIT, the Los Angeles City Council and the State Senate, and has become a national defender of voting rights as California’s Secretary of State. Now, he will serve in the halls of our nation’s Capitol as California’s next United States Senator, the first Latino to hold this office,” said Governor Newsom. “Through his tenacity, integrity, smarts and grit, California is gaining a tested fighter in their corner who will be a fierce ally in D.C., lifting up our state’s values and making sure we Continues on Page 3

Moderna Vaccine confirms it is Safe and Efficacious

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO – The Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup last night completed its review of the federal process and has concluded the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine is safe and efficacious for use in the Western States. The Workgroup provided its confirmation to California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington this morning, making the Moderna vaccine the second COVID-19 vaccine supported for use in these states. Shipments are expected early this week. Washington, Oregon and Nevada joined California’s COVID-19 Scientific Safety Review Workgroup in October. The Workgroup, made up

of nationally acclaimed scientists with expertise in immunization and public health has concurrently and independently reviewed the FDA’s actions related to COVID-19 vaccinations. It will continue to evaluate other COVID-19 vaccines as they go through the federal process. Statement from California Governor Gavin Newsom: “While California is in some of the darkest days of our COVID-19 surge, with too many families grieving lost loved ones, there is light as more vaccines are approved for distribution. With the Moderna vaccine in circulation, we have another tool to fight this deadly disease. I am grateful to the best-in-the-nation scientific

experts. They lent their time and expertise to ensure that Californians can have confidence in these vaccines’ safety and efficacy. This major step forward is welcome news to all who have experienced loss and hardship during this pandemic — those we hold in our thoughts this holiday season. Until vaccines are available more widely across the state, all Californians must do their part to stop the surge by staying at home and wearing a mask when leaving home for essential work and needs.” Statement from Washington Governor Jay Inslee: “While disease activity remains high and our ICUs remain near capacity, we are

hopeful that the introduction of another COVID vaccine will get us much closer to defeating this virus. Stepping up vaccinations for health care workers and our highest risk populations will help save lives. We must continue to be vigilant and keep up wearing masks, physically distancing and not having gatherings, especially during the upcoming holidays.” Statement from Oregon Governor Kate Brown: “After a thorough scientific review, here is what the doctors and health experts have told us: the Moderna vaccine is safe. It is effective. And, it gives us the ability to reach communities across rural Oregon and the West that don’t have easy access to cold storage. Now, we must do everything we can to distribute vaccines as quickly and equitably as possible to protect our frontline health care workers, long-term care residents and staff, and the communities most at risk from COVID-19. “The last week has made it clear that we also need accurate information from our federal partners about vaccine distribution. With these first vaccinations comes a great sense of hope, but we still have a long road ahead before we’re out of this pandemic. And, until vaccines are widely available, we need all Oregonians to do everything we can to protect our families and loved ones from this deadly disease. Wear

a mask, avoid gatherings this holiday season, and stay home when you are sick. We will beat this pandemic the same way we have made it through the last ten months: by working together.” Statement from Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak: “Once again, the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup has shown that we work better together, especially during the ongoing pandemic. I am glad to see the state-level review of the recently approved Moderna COVID-19 vaccine has come to the same conclusion as the FDA: the vaccine is safe. It will be a valuable tool for protecting Nevadans from this deadly virus. “Nevada’s immunization team has done tremendous work in the last eight months to plan and prepare for this historic distribution process, and the first week of distributing the Pfizer vaccine has gone smoothly. Our team is ready to move forward similarly with the Moderna vaccine once our first allocation arrives. “I want to again thank my fellow Governors for engaging in this work in a truly collaborative effort. Nevadans – and residents throughout the West – should be proud of the review the Workgroup has done to help add another layer of confidence in this vaccine.”

Move on,’ televangelist Pat Robertson urges Trump

By Desert Star Staff Influential televangelist Pat Robertson has advised Donald Trump to “move on” from overturning the results of the election. He was instantly ridiculed online for saying back in October that God told him Trump would win. “I had prayed and hoped that there might be some better solution, but… I think it’s all over,” Robertson said on his show The 700 Club on the Christian Broadcast Network. “I think the Electoral College has spoken. I think the Biden corruption has not totally been brought to fruition. Still, it doesn’t seem to be affecting the Electoral College, and I don’t think the Supreme Court is going to move in to do anything,” the preacher told the audience. “So just keep your eyes on the future.” Robertson said it would be “a mistake” for Trump to run again in 2024, suggesting that former South Carolina governor

and former US envoy to the UN, Nikki Haley, would be a better option for the GOP. “You know, with all his talent and the ability to raise money and grow large crowds, the president still lives in an alternate reality. He really does,” Robertson stated about Trump. “It would be well to say, ’You’ve had your day. It’s time to move on.” Many online, Robertson’s words were seen as another example of Trump’s strong backer now bailing on the president and throwing him “under the bus” by acknowledging his election defeat to Joe Biden. Uh-oh, Donnie!” Star Trek actor and frequent Trump critic, George Takei, tweeted. Another wrote it was “pretty amazing that #PatRobertson is a voice of reason right now.” Trump’s supporters, meanwhile, blasted the conservative preacher for being “spineless.” Similar accusations had been earlier hurled at

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for congratulating Biden after the Electoral College voted for the Democrat over Trump on December 14. Robertson’s stance was ridiculed by some because, December 25, 2020

in October, he claimed to have received a revelation from God that Trump was going to be reelected “without question,” and his victory would be “a given.” Did he admit that God was wrong, tho?” a

person wrote online. “For someone, allknowing and powerful god sure does make is minions backpedal a lot,” another said.

secure the critical resources to emerge stronger from this pandemic. He will be a Senator for all Californians.” Secretary of State Padilla was sworn in as California’s first Latino Secretary of State on January 5, 2015, and pledged to bring more Californians into the democratic process as the state’s top elections official. With President Trump attacking immigrants and democracy over the past four years, Padilla has been a warrior for voting rights and the American Dream. He was re-elected in 2018 and received the most votes of any Latino elected official in the United States.

“I am honored and humbled by the trust placed in me by Governor Newsom, and I intend to work each and every day to honor that trust and deliver for all Californians,” said Secretary of State Padilla. “From those struggling to make ends meet to the small businesses fighting to keep their doors open to the health care workers looking for relief, please know that I am going to the Senate to fight for you. We will get through this pandemic together and rebuild our economy in a way that doesn’t leave working families behind.” Since taking office, Secretary of State Padilla has worked to make California’s elections more accessible and inclusive while fighting to protect our voting systems’ integrity. He: Registered over 22 million voters: Under Padilla’s leadership, voter registration is at an all-time high – over 22 million Californians are registered to vote (an increase of more than four million from the day he took office) and the highest rate in nearly seven decades. Expanded access to the ballot: He implemented innovations like same-day registration, online preregistration for 16- and 17year olds and automatic voter registration, also known as “California Motor Voter.” Protected our elections: He oversaw the upgrades and replacement of voting systems in all 58 counties in the state to systems that meet California’s newer, higher security standards. Padilla also served as Chairman of the California Complete Count Committee. He led efforts to reach hard to count communities and worked with community-based organizations to secure a safe and fair Census count. Growing up, Padilla’s mom and dad relentlessly emphasized hard work and good education as the key to a better future. With just an elementary school education, Santos worked as a shortorder cook for forty years before retirement. He liked to boast that his kitchen “never failed an inspection.” For the same forty years, Lupe worked tirelessly as a housekeeper for a group of families in Studio City and Sherman Oaks’ affluent communities. Santos and Lupe raised their three children, Julie, Alex and Ackley, in Pacoima’s modest home. In the 1980s, the neighborhood became one of the more violent areas of Los Angeles, and gang activity, prostitution and open-air drug dealing were rampant. Going to sleep to the sound of police helicopters was not uncommon. Padilla attended local public schools, keeping his focus on books and baseball.

He worked his way into the starting rotation at San Fernando High as a senior. The same year, his countless hours of study paid off, and Padilla won admission to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Alex earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked his way through college, doing various janitorial and administrative jobs while mentoring younger students back home to follow the same path. The conditions in his neighborhood growing up and the feeling that the Northeast San Fernando Valley wasn’t adequately served by the government awakened his interest in political activism. As a teenager, Padilla’s family helped organize neighbors to take back the streets from crime. He and his mother would periodically join community leaders to protest environmental injustice and demand the Lopez Canyon Landfill closure. In 1994, after California voters passed Proposition 187, the sweeping anti-immigrant measure, his parents finally applied for citizenship. Now a recent MIT graduate, Padilla resolved to put an engineering career aside and dedicate his life to public service. Demanding a fair share of opportunity and resources for the Northeast San Fernando Valley people, Padilla was elected to the Los Angeles City Council as a political

December 25, 2020

outsider at the age of 26. As a City Council member, he worked to expand afterschool programs to serve 16 schools in his district, worked to reduce class sizes and built state-of-the-art libraries and a children’s museum. He worked to retain and create more local job opportunities through industrial, commercial and residential development and community reinvestment. And he championed citywide measures to improve air and water quality while directing the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to dramatically increase procurement of renewable energy sources. In 2001, Padilla’s colleagues elected him the youngest Council President in Los Angeles history. As President, he provided citywide leadership at critical times. He was Acting Mayor during the tragedy of September 11, 2001. He assisted in the interview and selection of William Bratton as Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department. He helped negotiate the approval of LA Live and the modernization of Los Angeles International Airport. In 2005, his colleagues throughout the state elected him President of the California League of Cities. In 2006, Padilla was elected to the State Senate to represent the more than 1 million people in the San Fernando Valley. As a State Senator, he would author

more than 70 bills signed into law by both Republican and Democratic governors. Over two terms, Padilla passed primary legislation: Fighting climate change: He passed landmark legislation increasing renewable energy standards, expanding green manufacturing and solar power, developing clean fuels and modernizing the electrical grid. Expanding educational opportunity: He passed bills bridging the digital divide and expanding college access, helping English language learners and protecting student-athletes. Fostering healthier communities: He fought for universal health care, stopping tobacco sales to minors, fighting diabetes and obesity, expanding patient protections and improving food safety. Increasing gun safety: He passed commonsense gun safety measures like tracking stolen guns and stopping felons from possessing body armor. Harnessing innovation: As an engineer, he fought for the ethical advancement of science and technology. He authored legislation protecting Californians from discrimination based on genetic information and wrote the bill creating a statewide Earthquake Early Warning System. Padilla lives with his wife Angela, a mental health advocate, and their three sons in the San Fernando Valley.

‘Travel ban now!’ Calls grow for Trump to halt flights from the UK

By Desert Star Staff Americans from across the political spectrum are calling on President Donald Trump to immediately ban flights from the UK as a new variant of Covid-19 continues to spread. Even though more than forty countries blocked flights from the UK in response to the reportedly rapidly spreading new coronavirus variant, the US was not one of them, with White House Coronavirus Task Force member Dr. Anthony Fauci advising against a travel ban. Yet, there are growing calls from Americans – both Democrat and Republican -- to ban entry to passengers from the UK. “If you don’t like lockdowns, you should be SCREAMING for a UK travel ban ASAP,” tweeted Human Events co-publisher Will Chamberlain. At the same time, One America News Network host Jack Posobiec called for a travel ban on the UK “now” to “keep the circulation of this new strain down and manageable.” Dilbert creator Scott Adams agreed with Cheong, calling the refusal to implement a travel ban “déjà vu.” Democrats have also called for more significant measures on flights from the UK. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo successfully convinces at least three airlines to require

negative Covid-19 tests from British passengers. Democratic Illinois Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi commented that a report by the Committee on Oversight and Reform had found that Trump’s administration has “allowed the virus to flood into the US from Italy last spring. “We must prevent the same mistake from happening again,” Krishnamoorthi said. Meanwhile, Massachusetts Rep. Bill Keating called for the Trump administration

to “temporarily institute a pre-boarding clear Covid-19 test requirement for passengers departing from the UK for the US.” Daily Beast editor-at-large Molly Jong-Fast tweeted, “Trump still won’t ban travel with the UK because he’s swamped doing... Twitter?” UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson locked down entire sections of the UK – including London – just days before Christmas on Saturday after announcing that a new

strain of the coronavirus has been spreading. The new strain has continued to spread throughout the UK and beyond over the past few days, prompting countries worldwide to restrict travel. On Tuesday, however, the European Commission advised its member states to stop “blanket travel bans” on the UK, which “prevent thousands of EU and UK citizens from returning to their homes.”

Vaccine Priorities, Precautions for People with Disabilities

A las personas en mayor riesgo de contagio por el coronavirus se les está dando prioridad para recibir las vacunas COVID-19. (Dmytro S/Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff With coronavirus vaccines now being distributed, advocates for people living with disabilities are stressing the importance of knowing if they are at

increased risk of COVID-19. People with certain disabilities or on medications with particular side effects are more vulnerable to the effects of the virus, and people in nursing homes or

group housing are more likely to become infected. These and other considerations will determine the priorities for vaccine distribution. Susan Dooha, executive director at the Center

for Independence of the Disabled New York, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has information online about who is at greatest risk. “There’s a whole list of chronic or serious health conditions that would put them in the higherrisk category that puts them higher up to receive vaccination,” Dooha said. Information about COVID-19 vaccines and conditions that put people at increased risk from the coronavirus can be found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. Dooha cautions that some people with specific health conditions may be advised not to get the vaccinations currently available, so it’s important to find out if they could be at risk of an adverse reaction. “People should speak with their own health practitioner and ask, based on their own health status and medications they’re taking, whether the vaccine is right for them

at present,” she said. Conditions that warrant consulting a health care provider include allergic reactions to any of the ingredients of the COVID vaccine or to other vaccines. Dooha pointed out that people living in nursing homes or other care facilities in New York can get help if their facilities fail to provide adequate information or explanations of vaccine risks and protocols. “You can call the New York Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program if you believe perhaps that your right to be educated and to consent freely is being violated,” she said. Listings of long-term care ombudsmen by county are available through the New York Office for the Aging website, at aging.ny.gov. Trump urged to veto Covid-19 relief bill By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump’s supporters are urging him to veto the long-awaited Covid-19 relief bill, taking issue with it being tied to foreign aid, the amount of in-person payments, and some provisions unrelated to the pandemic. After the House and the Senate sealed the deal on a $900 billion plan on Monday night, some US conservatives took to Twitter, highlighting the legal details they found questionable. A hefty amount of outrage was caused by the stimulus bill being tied to billions in foreign and military spending, as both were part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act. Online commenters were dismayed at the US government being ready to spend hundreds of millions on foreign aid. Simultaneously, in-person checks for many struggling Americans would amount to a mere $600 per person. For example, $1.3 billion would go to Egypt, $700 million to Sudan and $500 million to Israel. Every American left and right should be calling for a veto of this stimulus ‘deal’— which provides more funding to foreign governments and to American art centers, than to the American people,” tweeted conservative commentator www.desertstarweekly.com

Candace Owens. Some others were baffled by several relief bill provisions that seem to be less discussed in the media than the in-person checks. For example, in a significant win for the entertainment industry, the stimulus bill would make illegal media streaming a felony up to a 10-year prison sentence. Among other curious parts, the supposed relief plan also includes an extension of a tax credit for racehorse owners and an official US stance on the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, intended as a condemnation of China’s treatment of Tibetan Buddhists. Some Twitter users thought Trump should, at the very least, veto specific items in the bill to “cut off all the money for stuff not related to Covid-19.” The sitting president is yet to comment on any of the bill’s line items or the Consolidated Appropriation Act. Previously, however, Trump advocated for a more than twice as large $2,000 in-person payment but was talked out of the idea by some of his staffers, according to the Washington Post’s sources. Trump is expected to sign the Congress-approved bill later this week.

Lady of Guadalupe Film Gets US Theatrical Release

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, Vision Films Inc. (“Vision”) announces Lady of Guadalupe’s US theatrical release. The featurelength film from Director Pedro Brenner and Executive Producer Robert Hymers and Pinnacle Entertainment depict the revered religious and cultural icon. It is the first modern production of her story. It will open in American Cinemas in Houston and Ft. Worth, TX and in Galaxy Theatres in North Las Vegas, NV and The Colony, TX, beginning today, Friday, December 11. The opportune timing coincides with Our Lady of Guadalupe’s annual Feast, traditionally celebrated on December 12. Based on actual events, Lady of Guadalupe is a moving religious discovery juxtaposing folklore and the present day. Historically, significant

recreations are used to illustrate the origin of her prevalent and powerful Mexican identity and faith symbolism. When a young and ambitious reporter (Guillermo Iván) is assigned an article on faith, he finds himself enmeshed in Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe’s legend. Skeptical of miracles and the importance of modernday Christianity, the reporter’s investigation takes him from cynic to true believer as his personal limits are tested. The international cast includes popular film and telenovela stars including, Guillermo Iván (Telemundo’s, Al Otro Lado del Muro), Eric da Silva(O Atentado, Valor da Vida), Paola Baldión (Portraits In A Sea Of Lies), Huitzil Sol, Rudy Miera(Milagros), Norman Patrick Brown (The Thin Red Line), Kimberley Aria Peterson (The Long Short), Jesús Lloveras (Tercer

Grado), and Glenn Craley. Lise Romanoff, CEO and Managing Director of Vision Films, says, “We are thrilled that our colleagues at Galaxy Theatres came on board to share this unique film about Our Lady of Guadalupe at this opportune holiday time. “ “During these challenging times, it’s important for all of us to stay connected. We are excited and pleased to be a positive support to the communities we serve with this wonderful celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe,” Frank Rimkus, CEO, Galaxy Theatres. Ringo Starr Releases “Here’s To The Nights”

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES As this crazy year comes to a close, Ringo offers a song of peace, love and friendship – “Here’s To The Nights,” available today as a single. Written by Diane Warren, Ringo is joined by his friends, some longtime and some new, including Paul McCartney, Joe Walsh, Corinne Bailey Rae, Eric Burton (Black Pumas), Sheryl Crow, FINNEAS, Dave Grohl, Ben Harper, Lenny Kravitz, Jenny Lewis, Steve Lukather, Chris Stapleton and Yola. “When Diane presented this song to me, I loved the sentiment of it,” said Ringo. “This is the kind of song we all want to sing along to, and it was so great how many

wonderful musicians joined in. I wanted it out in time for New Years’ because it feels like a good song to end a tough year on. So here’s to the nights we won’t remember and the friends we won’t forget – and I wish everyone peace and love for 2021.” The song is the lead single from his forthcoming EP, titled Zoom In, recorded at Starr’s home studio between April- October 2020. For this EP, Starr collaborated with songwriters and producers, including Jeff Zobar, who penned the title track, “Zoom In, Zoom Out” during the pandemic, and features Robbie Krieger on guitar; Sam Hollander, who wrote and produced “Teach Me To

Tango” – sending Ringo a nearly completed track onto which he added vocals and, of course, drums; Ringo cowrote “Waiting For The Tide to Turn” with his engineer Bruce Sugar, adding Tony Chen and his extensive reggae roots; and “Not Enough Love In The World” which was written by the extended time All Starr member Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams (full credits below). Taking every precaution, Starr invited only a few musicians at various times to his home studio to record the music. Joining Starr were musicians Nathan East (bass), Steve Lukather (guitar), Bruce Sugar (synth guitar), Benmont Tench (piano),

Charlie Bisharat (violin), Jacob Braun (cello), and Jim Cox (string arrangements and synth strings). Throughout his career, Ringo Starr has received nine GRAMMY® Awards and has twice been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame -- first as a Beatle and then as a solo artist. Between 1970 and 2020, Ringo has released 20 solo studio records. He has acted in over 15 films, received an Academy Award®, and has been nominated as an actor for an Emmy®. Ringo has published seven books, had a stint as a male fashion model, and that same year went behind the lens as the photographer for some Foo Fighters PR

photos. In 2018, Ringo was knighted, and in 2019 he celebrated 30 years of touring with his All Starr Bands. For all his many creative successes, Ringo is always, first and foremost, a musician, a drummer. Ringo’s candor, wit and soul are the lifeblood of his music. Peace and love are his life’s rhythm and melody, and he propels this universal message in everything he does: his evocative artwork, his enthusiastic live performances, his legendary songs, all imbued with the joy, reflection, and wisdom of the music icon the world knows and loves only as “Ringo.” Source: PRNewswire

We are proud to see our family grow and thrive,” says Graff. Frank Family has consistently been recognized as one of the best Napa Valley Wineries in consumer and trade-driven rankings.
