drop-in Times Square has been a tradition since 1907. The first time it was seen was in January 1908 when Adolph Ochs, owner of the Times newspaper, organized the fireworks displays at the Times
Building. While this may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of New Year’s Eve, it is an integral part of the event. Thousands of people will be in Times Square to see the ball drop.

green tea can decrease plaque in the arteries and fight prostate cancer. Rosemary: Studies have shown this powerful spice can reduce the risk of stroke and protect against
Alzheimer’s disease. Almonds: Full of plant sterols and amino acids, almonds can help lower high cholesterol and promote muscle growth. These handheld treats are also rich in vitamin E, which can protect skin from sun damage. Fatty Fish: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fatty fish such as salmon, flounder, and sardines can lower the risk of heart disease. Bananas: This easy, portable snack is loaded with essential potassium, which regulates the nervous system. Bananas also offer loads of vitamin B-6, which aids immunity and metabolism. Soy - This protein-packed food contains isoflavones, which can aid in the treatment and prevention of prostate cancer. Also, research from the Food and Drug Administration shows that 25 grams per day can help lessen the risk of heart disease. Dark Chocolate: Satisfy your sweet tooth and improve blood flow to the brain at the same time. Dark chocolate can lower blood pressure and increase the skin’s resistance to UV rays. behind Dark, this series tells a complex mystery-filled story. Another great choice is the animated science fiction collection Love, Death & Robots, which features several stories. Although not quite as glitzy as some of the other prestige dramas on the service, this show is still a lot of fun. Among the stories you’ll find are one starring David Fincher and Alberto Mielgo and an exciting one based on a classic Japanese novel. New shows are coming to the Apple TV+ platform.

A lot of great content for December, including several new comedies, a spy dramedy, and an immigrant anthology. Also, there’s a brand-new National Treasure series, and Star Wars Bad Batch Season 2 will debut. All of these are worth watching. Enola Holmes Enola Holmes is the younger sister of Sherlock Holmes. She has lived her adolescent life observing and learning from her mother. Eventually, she decides to take on her detective career. She takes on her first official case in the film, a missing
girl. But unfortunately, the case sends her into the underworld of London. Sleepless in Seattle Sleepless in Seattle is one of the most famous romantic comedies. Directed by Nora Ephron, it stars Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, and Bill Pullman. It’s a story about a recently widowed architect who moves to Seattle with his son. The movie also has a good mix of heart and humor. There’s a lot of attention to character interaction. The film is credited with establishing Ephron as a romantic comedy filmmaker. Sleepless in Seattle. Sleepless in Seattle is a romantic comedy that takes place throughout the holiday season. At its peak, it grossed $220 million worldwide. Glass Onion sequels First up is Knives Out, a cinematic adaptation of the book by Benoit Blanc. It stars Daniel Craig as the detective and is directed by Rian Johnson. Benoit Blanc’s cinematic revival comes with a star-studded cast. There are some familiar faces like Katherine Heigl and Kathryn Hahn, as well as some new characters. Other great movies to
watch on New Year’s Eve alone include Don’t Look Up, which features actors like Olivia Colman, Jennifer Lawrence, and Maggie Gyllenhaal. It is based on a novel by Elena Ferrante. Another is Snowpiercer, which features Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, and Octavia Spencer. All the films above are available on Netflix on New Year’s Eve, but each captures different feelings and emotions associated with the holidays. While all are fun to watch, some are more thought-provoking than others. You can decide for yourself, but if you want a good laugh, try Trading Places. www.desertstarweekly.com

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916)939-0772 or visit this internet website http://search.nationwideposting.com/ propertySearchTerms.aspx, using the file number assigned to this case CA2200287802 Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction if conducted after January 1, 2021, pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (916)939-0772, or visit this internet website http://search.nationwideposting.com/propertySearchTerms.aspx, using the file number assigned to this case CA2200287802 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid, by remitting the funds and affidavit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code, so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. If the sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-960-8299 or visit this Internet Web site https://www.altisource.com/ loginpage.aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2022-01221-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction, if conducted after January 1, 2021, pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855)-976-3916, or visit this internet website https://tracker.auction.com/sb1079, using the file number assigned to this case 2022-01221-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. USC Annenberg - Center for Health Journalism By Desert Star Staff Do you have a reporting project you’ve been dreaming of? Then, let’s make it happen! Are you ready to take your reporting to the next level with the USC Center for Health Journalism California Fellowship? Our call to apply for the 2023 California Fellowship is open! Our California Fellowship equips journalists pursuing ambitious health-focused stories with $2,000 reporting grants, a week of intensive training and workshops, and five months of professional mentorship from a veteran journalist. You don’t need to be a health journalist to be considered. Instead, many of our best Fellows wanted to explore how to cover their beats through a health or health equity lens. The annual Fellowship, to be held in March 2023, will provide interactive workshops and inspiring discussions by health policy experts and community health practitioners. And leading
journalists that will help you better understand how social, educational, economic, and racial inequities – and access to health care – influence health and life outcomes. Competitively-selected Fellows will receive a $2,000 grant to defray the costs of reporting an in-depth explanatory or investigatory series. In addition, up to five California Fellows will be eligible for community engagement grants of $1,000$2,000, plus specialized mentoring over five months. The Center for Health Journalism helps reporters advance their skills in “impact reporting,” which combines powerful narratives, secure data, and engagement to maximize the potential for impact. The Center embraces an expansive definition of health journalism based on the core idea that our health is shaped by conditions in homes, schools, and communities – not just in healthcare settings. The deadline to apply is January 13.
Killer US Winter Storm: “More Than 50 Dead”
Tommy Roetzer shovels his driveway clear of snow in Buffalo, New York By Desert Star Staff It’s pretty damn cold in most of the US. In the past few days, at least 50 people have died in extreme cold – sometimes more than -40 °F below zero – and heavy snowfall. In the district of Erie County in the state of New York alone, 27 people died, as Marc Poloncarz, the district manager, announced on Twitter on Monday. Nationwide, more than 51 people died in connection with Arctic winter storm Elliott, ABC reported. The

broadcaster NBC even put the death toll at 56. One of the cold victims is Charles Wilson Ligon Jr. (57). The homeless man froze to death while trying to travel from Louisiana to his family in Tennessee, USA. The city of Buffalo (New York state) is particularly hard hit by the weather disaster. Depressing: Despite the urgent warnings, some people are surprised in their cars – as the fate of a 22-year-old woman shows. Anndel Taylor’s car got stuck in a gigantic

snowdrift on her way back from work at the weekend - and she was unable to free herself and get to safety. Taylor was trapped for around 18 hours before dying in the freezing cold. Exhaust fumes are said to have entered her car. Taylor was one of three drivers up to that point who was driving her vehicle despite an applicable driving ban. At its peak, up to 1.6 million homes were without power, according to the PowerOutage website. “My heart goes out to December 30, 2022
those who lost loved ones this holiday weekend,” wrote President Joe Biden, 80, on Twitter. Kathy Hochul (64), the governor of the badly affected state of New York, spoke of a “historic snowstorm” and warned of further snowfalls in Buffalo, where dozens of people have already died. “The storm is easing, but we’re not over the hill yet,” she wrote on Twitter. She called on people not to take any risks and stay at home. “Elliott” brought meter-
deep snow, temperatures in the double-digit minus range, and hurricane-force winds to large parts of the USA over the Christmas weekend. The region around the Great Lakes northeast of the USA and on the border with Canada was particularly affected. The Arctic cold front also messed up the Christmas plans of many travelers: According to the flight data website “FlightAware,” more than 10,000 flights were canceled from Friday to Sunday. www.desertstarweekly.com
