Seasonal Entertainment Abounds In and Around the Coachella Valley as 2013 Draws to a Close
By Frieda Noone GREATER PALM SPRINGS – Not inclined to travel for fun this holiday season? You really don’t need to do so. There’s plenty of year-end entertainment to be found around the desert. From traditional and offbeat musical performances to wildly decorative light displays, there’s something for everyone. Here’s a sampling of the seasonal fun: The Desert Edge
Community Theatre in Desert Edge, just east of Desert Hot Springs, is performing its Second Annual Renaissance Yulefest on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7-8. The event is set in the village green of “Royal Springs, in the year 1555 A.D.,” where the Royal Court will serve a sumptuous feast and provide historically flavored entertainment for guests’ enjoyment. The Renaissance Yulefest begins at 1 p.m. both days in the
Community Room of the Healing Waters Mobile Estates, 18131 Langlois Road. Reservations are recommended; the event is free, though a donation of $10 is suggested. Call 760-329-1225 for info. La Quinta is ringing in the holiday season with its Tree Lighting Ceremony at Old Town La Quinta on Friday, Dec. 6. the evening’s festivities, which get under way at 6 p.m. There’s lots happening in Palm Springs, as usual — with a stocking (or two) filled holiday cheer to be found at The Purple Room, the recently revitalized restaurant and show lounge at the Club Trinidad Resort. “Judy’s Old-Fashioned Christmas,” performed by allaround entertainer / impersonator Michael Holmes, is running Sundays through Dec. 29, with
dinner served at 5:30 p.m. and the parody-tribute to Garland (and her gal pals Bette Davis, Carol Channing and Pearl Bailey) starting at 7 p.m. Dinner and show are $40, and reservations are recommended. Audit of Restoration Fund Suggests Uncertainty, Urgent Action By Larry Jameson INDIO – A report filed on the management of the Salton Sea Restoration Fund last month by the California State Auditor found that the state has not fully funded a restoration plan for the sea, and that the state’s future mitigation costs are uncertain.
The audit on the fund was requested by State Assemblymember V. Manuel Pérez (D-Coachella), who indicated that he and his staff will be carefully reviewing the report and the recommendations it contains to help determine future courses of action.
