Seasonal Entertainment Abounds In and Around the Coachella Valley as 2013 Draws to a Close

By Frieda Noone GREATER PALM SPRINGS – Not inclined to travel for fun this holiday season? You really don’t need to do so. There’s plenty of year-end entertainment to be found around the desert. From traditional and offbeat musical performances to wildly decorative light displays, there’s something for everyone. Here’s a sampling of the seasonal fun: The Desert Edge

Community Theatre in Desert Edge, just east of Desert Hot Springs, is performing its Second Annual Renaissance Yulefest on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7-8. The event is set in the village green of “Royal Springs, in the year 1555 A.D.,” where the Royal Court will serve a sumptuous feast and provide historically flavored entertainment for guests’ enjoyment. The Renaissance Yulefest begins at 1 p.m. both days in the

Community Room of the Healing Waters Mobile Estates, 18131 Langlois Road. Reservations are recommended; the event is free, though a donation of $10 is suggested. Call 760-329-1225 for info. La Quinta is ringing in the holiday season with its Tree Lighting Ceremony at Old Town La Quinta on Friday, Dec. 6. Music, a visit from Santa and family activities (including ceramic ornament painting) are all part of

the evening’s festivities, which get under way at 6 p.m. There’s lots happening in Palm Springs, as usual — with a stocking (or two) filled holiday cheer to be found at The Purple Room, the recently revitalized restaurant and show lounge at the Club Trinidad Resort. “Judy’s Old-Fashioned Christmas,” performed by allaround entertainer / impersonator Michael Holmes, is running Sundays through Dec. 29, with

dinner served at 5:30 p.m. and the parody-tribute to Garland (and her gal pals Bette Davis, Carol Channing and Pearl Bailey) starting at 7 p.m. Dinner and show are $40, and reservations are recommended. For half the price and sans dinner, Holmes also plays “Judy: After Dark!” at 9 p.m. at the same venue on the same Sunday dates. Audit of Restoration Fund Suggests Uncertainty, Urgent Action By Larry Jameson INDIO – A report filed on the management of the Salton Sea Restoration Fund last month by the California State Auditor found that the state has not fully funded a restoration plan for the sea, and that the state’s future mitigation costs are uncertain.

The audit on the fund was requested by State Assemblymember V. Manuel Pérez (D-Coachella), who indicated that he and his staff will be carefully reviewing the report and the recommendations it contains to help determine future courses of action.

“This audit was set into motion earlier this year at my request, for the purpose of determining whether the management of the Restoration Fund will enable the state to meet its statutory responsibilities under Continues on Page 3

Entrants vied for prizes in different categories of dancing, singing and drumming. Each day featured a Grand Entry, during which the full pageantry of costumes and tribal movement could be enjoyed as the dancers formed a procession — winding around the show arena. The handmade costumes were spectacular, with feathers and colorful streamers attached to capes that created a vivid swirl as the dancers twirled. Visitors also were able to taste a variety of Native American foods, such as Indian fry bread, and shop among vendors for jewelry, weavings and other types of art. It was a prime opportunity for non-Native Americans to observe the cultures and ritual styles of the many tribes that had gathered. RANCHO MIRAGE – The sixth annual Desert Women’s Show Expo & Conference was held at the Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa on Nov. 1718. The event included many speakers, a style show, seminars and a Taste of the Valley with food samplings from fine valley restaurants. Women leaders conducted power teams that covered themes including video, advertising, composing a press release, business plan writing, marketing and how to launch a business efficiently and effectively, to name a few. Breakout sessions were held on the second day that included earthquake preparedness, business loans, using social media to personal and business advantage, fashion and even sexual harassment in the workplace. The enthusiastic keynote speaker was actress, author and nutritionist and natural beauty products designer Suzanne Somers, who discussed secrets to health, vitality and beauty. DESERT HOT SPRINGS – The CPV Sentinel Energy Project team, along with an array of county and local government representatives including Congressman Raul Ruiz, Riverside County Supervisor John Benoit and DHS Mayor-elect Adam Sanchez, participated in the annual Thanksgiving turkey giveaway by Family Services of the Desert / Food Now. Five hundred tasty birds were distributed to needy families on the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 27 — the day before Thanksgiving — at the Food Now location, 14080 Palm Drive, Ste. E. Congressman Raul Ruiz and current and newly elected Desert Hot Springs City Councilmembers Joe McKee, Scott Matas and Russell Betts were among those distributing Thanks giving turkeys. ’Tis the Season for Financial Planning

By Kevin Powell Now that the holidays are upon us, one of the last things on our minds is finances. However, it’s a great time of the year to do a quick assessment and prepare for the upcoming year. Updating your financial plan is one of the most important tasks to tackle. Many companies have their open enrollments for benefits at this time of year. Do you have new perks that you should be taking advantage of? Have current benefits been trimmed? (We are seeing quite a few companies make substantial changes to their benefits package.) Should you take advantage of a Roth IRA?

Will your current savings provide the lifestyle you desire during retirement? Is your portfolio best structured to grow in 2014 no matter what happens on Wall Street or in Washington? Are there economic sectors you don’t have exposure to that should be added to your investments? For retirees, adequate medical coverage and inflation are the two biggest worries. Open enrollment for Medicare ends this week on Dec. 7. Medicare Advantage plans may be something you should consider. Inflation hasn’t been an issue for quite a while; however, most of the inflation reports we hear don’t include food and energy costs. That doesn’t make sense because those are two of our biggest expenses. The year 2013 will be the first year since 2006 where more money went into equities than was withdrawn. Over the past four years a whopping $400 billion has been pulled from the markets. The frightening reality of this is that many investors have missed out on one of the biggest stock rallies in history. For this reason, plus the easy-money policy of the Fed, I think we’ll

continue to see money coming into equities in 2014. Tax forms will be mailed in a little more than 30 days. It’s a good time to review your tax situation. Did you have any unusual tax events this year? It’s pretty easy to do a tax estimate

HAzY HoRizon foR SALTon SEA Continued from Page 1 the Quantification Settlement Agreement (QSA),” said Perez in response to the report. “The Restoration Fund is the primary vehicle for the state to meet its mitigation and restoration obligations under the QSA. From the beginning, I have been pressing for action, not delay, on the sea, and I am happy that based on our preliminary review of the recommendations, the State Auditor agrees with the urgency of acting now to restore the sea as a means to reduce mitigation costs later.” The Salton Sea, located in Riverside and Imperial counties in Southern California, is the state’s largest inland lake. It was

formed in 1905 when Colorado River floodwater breached an irrigation canal being constructed in the Imperial Valley, and it has since been primarily fed by agricultural drain water. According to experts, the Salton Sea serves as an important fishery and wildlife habitat and is a major stopping point for migratory birds along the Pacific flyway. Beginning in 2003, a series of agreements — known collectively as the QSA — between the state, local water agencies, and other entities have required, among other things, a water transfer that has reduced the amount of water that flows into the Salton Sea. To mitigate the effects of this water

transfer, the QSA requires one of the local water agencies that is a party to the agreement to provide additional water (i.e., mitigation water) to the Salton Sea for 15 years, from 2003 to 2017. Experts anticipate that when the sea stops receiving this mitigation water, the water transfer will cause profound negative environmental impacts — including the loss of fishery habitat, exposure of soils to wind erosion and declines in bird species due to the loss of food. The state audit was prepared at Pérez’s request earlier this year. In January, he issued a letter to the state’s Joint Legislative Audit Committee (JLAC) requesting that an audit be undertaken regarding how the Department of Fish & Game and the Department of Water Resources have managed funds in the Salton Sea Restoration Fund. In March, the JLAC voted to approve the request with strong, bipartisan and bicameral support, passing with a vote of 7-0 (Assembly) and 5-0 (Senate). Some highlights from the California State Auditor’s report on the administration of the Salton Sea Restoration Fund: The state has agreed to assume sole responsibility to pay the costs for environmental mitigation requirements in excess of $133 million (in 2003 dollars), an amount that three local water agencies must first pay. The three water agencies could exhaust most of their mitigation contributions as early as 2025, at which time any state financial obligations will commence. The state has not yet performed a cost estimate to determine how much it may need

to pay for mitigation costs under the QSA. The California Natural Resources Agency (Resources Agency) estimated, in 2006 dollars, that construction costs for fulfilling a portion of the QSA’s mitigation requirements could be $801 million, which does not reflect all of the mitigation costs the State may incur in satisfying its financial obligations. The QSA does not impose requirements related to restoration; however, by performing certain restoration activities now the state could potentially decrease its future mitigation costs. After more than six years, none of the restoration alternatives have been fully funded. In the absence of funding from the Legislature for a long-term restoration plan, the Resources Agency has taken an incremental approach to the restoration of the Salton Sea. Assemblymember Pérez serves as the Assistant Majority Floor Leader of the California State Assembly and as Vice Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus. He represents the 56th district, which comprises the cities and communities of Blythe, Brawley, Bermuda Dunes, Calexico, Calipatria, Cathedral City, Coachella, Desert Hot Springs, El Centro, Holtville, Imperial, Indio, Mecca, Oasis, North Shore, Salton Sea, Thermal, Thousand Palms and Westmorland. The California State Auditor’s report on the management of the Salton Sea Restoration Fund can be found in its entirety at bsa.ca.gov.

Adding ‘Might’ to Your ’Chondria A Pair of Anti-Oxidant Supplements May Help Slow Aging

By Art Kunkin (Mr. Life Extension) Aging happens inside each of the 60 to 90 trillion cells that make up the adult human body. If you lined up all these tiny cells end-to-end, they would circle the earth more than four times. Therefore, what we see as aging on the outside of the body is only a very small part of the aging process. Many scientists believe that aging occurs when there is damage to the small bacteria-like organelles called mitochondria found inside every living call. There are as many as 800 mitochondria inside each cell, functioning as the energy powerhouses of the cells. They

are so tiny that they were only detected when the electron microscope was invented in the 1930s. It is now known that the job of mitochondria is to produce a substance called ATP (adenosine tri-phosphate). All human cells actually live on the energy radiated when one of the three phosphate molecules of ATP breaks down into its electronic components. Over time, the number of mitochondria in your cells eventually decreases. Many diseases we associate with growing old (type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, heart failure and cancer) are actually believed

to be caused by mitochondrial dysfunction. However, two supplements seem to protect the body from these diseases: CoQ10 and PQQ. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance that helps the mitochondria “burn fuel” more effectively. It helps the energy transfer needed to make ATP, and its supplementary application has been shown to extend the lives of different species. In one study, mice given CoQ10 lived almost 12 years longer than usual — approximately nine human extra years, based on today’s average life expectancy (78.5 years). Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is a molecule found in all plants. Animals need it for growth and reproduction. Like CoQ10, it is an anti-oxidant preventing oxygen from combining improperly with other chemicals. PQQ helps the energy transfer process of mitochondria. But there’s one thing that makes it very unique and very important: PQQ actually increases the number of mitochondria existing in cells. This was discovered in 2010 by researchers at the University of California, Davis. December 4, 2013

Studies show that animals deprived of PQQ display stunted growth, decreased immune function and fewer mitochondria in their tissues. When given PQQ, these effects are reversed. PQQ is one of the strongest antioxidants existing. It’s actually about 5,000 times more powerful at withstanding oxidation than vitamin C. In future articles, I plan to present more information about these supplements and other methods for living much longer and healthier. For the proper use of these supplements, please consult with your physician. Celebrate With Cherries This season and into the New Year! Old Fashioned Cherry Cake*

Cherry Heart Cupcakes*

Nonstick cooking spray 11⁄2 cups sliced almonds, divided 11⁄4 cups maraschino cherries, quartered 11⁄2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 3/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature 1 cup sugar 3 large eggs at room temperature 1 lemon 1 tablespoon turbinado sugar Freshly whipped cream (optional) Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray 8- or 9-inch cake pan well with cooking spray. Line with parchment paper on the bottom and sides. Finely grind 11⁄4 cups almonds in food processor (you should end up with 1 cup); combine with cherries in small bowl. In separate bowl, place flour; take out 1 tablespoon flour and stir into cherry mixture. To the remaining flour add baking powder and salt; whisk to combine. Cream butter and sugar with electric mixer for 3 minutes, or until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well and scraping down sides of bowl after each addition. Add flour mixture and fold together. Stir in the cherry mixture. Finely grate lemon peel into the batter and add juice of the lemon, stir to combine. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Sprinkle with remaining 1⁄4 cup sliced almonds and turbinado sugar on top. Bake 50 to 75 minutes or until cake is golden brown and toothpick inserted into center comes out clean. Cool in pan 15 minutes then remove from pan to wire rack. Cool completely. Notes: Serve topped with whipped cream if desired. Cake is best eaten in first day or two. To store left overs wrap tightly in plastic wrap and freeze.

Chocolate Covered Cherries 12 maraschino cherries with stems 1/3 cup dark chocolate chips Cupcakes 4 large eggs ½ cup buttermilk ½ cup melted butter 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 package Chocolate Cake mix* Frosting and filling 8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature ½ cup unsalted butter, at room temperature Pinch kosher or fine sea slat 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 2 tablespoons maraschino cherry juice 2 cups (maybe a bit more) powdered sugar 12 maraschino cherries without stems Chocolate Covered Cherries: Line a baking sheet with wax or parchment paper. Place the cherries on some paper towels and let them dry. Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave until they are almost all melted, about 1½ – 2 minutes. Stir the chocolate until it is all melted and glossy. Dip the cherries into the chocolate and place on the prepared baking sheet, pressing down a little to create a flat surface. Refrigerate for ½ an hour or until the chocolate has hardened. Chocolate Covered Cherries also make an easy and thoughtful homemade gift all on their own! Cupcakes: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 12 standard muffin cups with paper liners. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the eggs, buttermilk, butter and vanilla on medium speed for 2 minutes. Turn the mixer to low and slowly add the cake mix. Beat just until combined. Divide the mixture evenly among the prepared muffin cups, filling almost full. Bake for 20 minutes or until the tops are springy to the touch and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool for 5 minutes in the pan then remove to a cooling rack to finish cooling. Frosting and filling: Beat the cream cheese, butter, salt, vanilla and cherry juice together until blended. Sift in 2 cups powdered sugar and mix to combine. If the frosting seems too soft, beat in a little more to stiffen it. The mixture should be a little thicker than heavily whipped cream. Take about ½ cup of the frosting and put in a plastic food storage bag. Snip off the end of the bag so you can pipe the mixture into the cupcakes. Refrigerate the rest of the frosting until time to finish the cupcakes. Assembly: Cut an inverted cone out of the top of each cupcake about the size of a nickel. Remove the cone and save it. With the end of a wooden spoon (or your finger) gently push the hole in the cupcake to widen it. Pipe a little frosting (about 1 teaspoon) into the hole. Place a cherry on the frosting and then pipe in a little more frosting to cover the cherry. Cut the end off the reserved cone and place it back on top of the cupcake to cover the hole. Brown-Bagging It with TV’s ‘Mrs. Brady’

Florence Henderson to Light Up CV Rep’s Luminary Luncheon By Frieda Noone RANCHO MIRAGE – The Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre (CV Rep) will host Broadway, television and film star Florence Henderson as the special guest artist at its Luminary Luncheon on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the CV Rep Theatre, located in The Atrium. Best known for role as blended-family matriarch Carol Brady in the hit 1969-74 television series “The Brady Bunch,” Henderson will surely be an inspiration for the group and a hot ticket for showbiz and nostalgia buffs. The multi-talented actress, talk show host, recording artist, Broadway veteran, philanthropist and author was inducted into the Smithsonian Institute’s first permanent entertainment history exhibit as one of the greatest pop cultural icons of all time in November 2008, and she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2012, Henderson received the Lifetime Achievement Award for the National Association of Teachers of Singing (nats.org).

Her enthusiasm, professionalism, artistry and commitment to quality have made her a respected and endearing performer — and an enduring one. In her recently published autobiography, “Life is Not a Stage,” Henderson revealed her personal life challenges growing up as the youngest of 10 children in rural Indiana in the aftermath of the Great Depression, and how her faith and ability to survive has carried her through rough times to a life of profound joy and purpose. In the mid-1980s, Henderson met and married John Kappas, who introduced her to the study of hypnotherapy, and she eventually became a hypnotherapist herself. In 2002, she faced the ultimate family challenge when her husband of 18 years was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Since that time, Henderson has become a featured healthcare and motivational speaker specializing in women’s health. She is also a spokesperson for City of Hope Cancer and Research Center. Following the luncheon,

which begins at noon, attendees will be treated to an “Actors’ Studio”-style experience in which Henderson sits for an in-depth interview conducted by local radio and TV host Don Martin. C V R e p ’s L u m i n a r y Luncheons are open to the public and provide a unique opportunity to be up close and personal with celebrated stars of stage, screen and television as they share special moments and personal stories from their early years to the present. CV Rep is an educational and dramatic theater organization that presents innovative productions and children’s outreach programs designed to enrich the quality of life for Coachella Valley residents and visitors. Sponsored by Acqua Pazza / Lulu California Bistros, the Luminary Luncheon with Florence Henderson will take place at the CV Rep Theatre, located in The Atrium, 69-930 Highway111. ‘Love Boat’ Captain Navigates Bio

Gavin MacLeod Berths in PS Dec. 7 to Discuss Life, Career, Book By Larry Jameson PA L M SPRINGS – Hometown performer Gavin MacLeod, a six-decade television acting veteran best known for the iconic roles of news writer Murray Slaughter and Captain Merrill Stubing in two of the biggest TV series in history — “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Love Boat,” respectively — will introduce and autograph his new memoir at Just Fabulous bookstore on Saturday, Dec. 7. In “This is Your Captain Speaking: My Fantastic Voyage Through Hollywood, Faith & Life” (Thomas Nelson), written with Mark Dagostino. MacLeod shares stories and memories of a long career — candidly revealing the highs and lows of his life, and how discovering faith gave him true happiness. From his humble theatrical beginnings in upstate New York to Radio City Music Hall and then onward to Hollywood, he discusses how his entertainment industry career — like that of so many others — was “no overnight success.” Some of MacLeod’s tales are hair-raising. As a young, starving artist trying to break into work on Broadway, he survived on buttered rolls, hot dogs and “ketchup soup.” He recalls his battles with depression and near-suicide while working on the TV series “McHale’s Navy,” and www.desertstarweekly.com

Of Christmas Trees and Decadent Treats By Pam Price PALM SPRINGS – Nowhere else can you attend a quartet of philanthropic events, rub shoulders with world-class artists, sip a goblet filled with Vichy Catalan water and then cap the evening with a scrumptious strawberry butterscotch milkshake — crowned with a homemade doughnut and lightas-a-feather marshmallow — all in the same month. Parties flow like wine here, and philanthropic events create a wonder world of celebrityinfused parties. For example, when Larry and Laurie Weitz hosted their first Art and Espionage Extravaganza at their dazzling residence, the lucky winner of this mindbogglingly fun mystery event received a $500 gift certificate from Ozel Jewelers on El Paseo. That was even before bright-red Baccarat gift bags stuffed with goodies from Skinn’s Hollywood Red Lip Palette, along with a box of Dial.A.Smile Whitening Lightning, was presented to 100 guests. Singer-actor Bobby Eakes, wearing a dramatic gold gown that would make

any double agent blink twice, entertained with a medley of James Bond theme songs. In downtown, it appears that the Mr. Cox Lifestyle Lounge — located on S. Indian Canyon Drive to the immediate left of the Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs — is making a splash in its first weeks of operation. New at this nostalgic, modernism-inspired luxury boutique is their chic water bar designed by Leon Siwek, a local gentleman with a worldwide reputation for fine imported water. Opening night found him extolling Sole and Arte Sole mineral water, among others. At $8 for 1.0 liter, this fine water in comes in .75-liter bottles adorned with nothing less than a fine replica of the famous Italian painting “La Scapiglatta.” More down-to-earth were the scrumptious Eisenberg hot dogs (sourced from Chicago) served at a sing-a-long at the Cinémas Palme D’Or in Palm Desert. Desert Sculptor to be Discussed in 29 Palms

By Larry Jameson TWENTYNINE PALMS – Ten short years ago, Ricardo Breceda was an injured construction worker earning a living selling exotic leather boots. Now, his famous metal sculptures are found from Canada to Australia — with over 125 works scattered across the Borrego Valley alone. Breceda’s bighorn sheep sculptures also adorn the intersection of Highway 62 and National Park Drive in Twentynine Palms. Breceda’s work is the perfect blend of stunning, durable craftsmanship and placement in the open desert landscape. Inspired by science, history, nature, whim and fantasy, his many sculptures offer something for everyone. The startling creations, which often catch desert visitors off guard, beg for the story of their

maker — and making — to be told. On Friday, Dec. 13, the 29 Palms Historical Society — as part of its 2013-14 Second Friday Lecture Series — will present “The Accidental Tourist: The Story of Artist Ricardo Breceda.” Biographer and photographer Diana Lindsay will recount how Breceda became a renowned artist with no previous art training, or even an interest in art. Lindsay also will have her book, “Ricardo Breceda: Accidental Artist,” available for purchase at the event. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. There also will be an optional dinner with the speaker at 5 p.m. at the 29 Palms Inn. Space is limited; to RSVP for the dinner, contact Marion Gartner at 760.361.1202 or desert29palms@yahoo.com.

Holiday Sur

Reducing Seasonal Stress in Seniors

Hints for the ‘Sandwich Generation’ By Frieda Noone The holidays may be filled with joy, but for the ever-growing number of aging Americans and those who care for them, this otherwise celebratory season can become mired in challenges. The stress of visitors, eventful meals, gift giving and social obligations can be overwhelming for anyone, but especially for those juggling busy schedules with caring for an elderly family member. An estimated 15 million Americans are sandwiched between two generations — and working to support both, according to the Pew Research Center. These adults struggle to balance caring for their children and their elderly parents. “Staying organized is especially important during this time of year to ensure that loved ones

aren’t ignored in the hustle and bustle of the season,” said Mark Armstrong, founder and CEO of ComForcare Senior Services (comforcare.com), an international senior care franchise that provides in-home, non-medical care to seniors and others in need of assistance. Armstrong offered these tips for family caregivers: Map Out D o c t o r ’s Appointments, prescription pickup dates, school holiday pageants and other planned events on a calendar or on your smartphone to avoid double booking and overextending yourself. Make Time for Your Parents and Children with intergenerational activities, such as decorating the home, trimming the tree, planning the menu or wrapping presents. Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Help.

This may mean alternating days with a relative or bringing in a professional caregiver. Watch Out for Red Flags that could mean your aging relative is in need of additional assistance: mismatched, wrinkled or soiled clothing, weight loss or gain, trouble remembering names or an unclean home. Consider Hiring a Professional Caregiver to relieve some strain on you. In the long-term, a caregiver can help your loved one age safely and comfortably in his or her own home by providing a wide range of non-medical home care services — including help with bathing, hairstyling and dressing, medication reminders, chores and light exercise assistance. Even You Need Some Care Sometimes! Set aside “me” time every day to do something just for you and you’ll be able to return to your caregiving duties refreshed and ready to help. (StatePoint)

Holiday Party Tips for the Employer By Larry Jameson The holiday season is an ideal time to thank employees for the year’s hard work and celebrate the successes of the company. But with the let-loose attitude of holiday parties, employers often disregard the liabilities involved in throwing a company bash — especially when alcohol is being served. Employment law expert

Christopher J. Boman, a partner with the Irvine office of Fisher & Phillips LLP (laborlawyers.com), warns employers to prepare for possible legal issues that could make for an unpleasant event, or even get them sued. Each year a significant number of employers report behavioral problems at their holiday company party ranging from excessive drinking and offcolor jokes to sexual advances

and fistfights. “It’s natural for employers to want to reward a year of dedicated service to the company,” said Boman. “While that in itself doesn’t pose an issue, it’s how employers handle the celebration that becomes important. Employers need to be cognizant of the legal liabilities they could face if precautions are not taken before the festivities begin.”

Boman recommended that business owners consider the following “lucky seven” tips for ensuring a successful, problemfree company holiday party: Keep Religion Out of the Mix – Employers should avoid religious ties to holiday parties and focus on gratitude for the year’s successes. Keep in mind that a Christmas party may appear insensitive to some employees, while throwing a general holiday party will ensure everyone feels comfortable. The Not-So-Open Bar – Don’t have an “open bar” where employees can drink as much as they want. Instead, have a cash bar or use a ticket system to limit the number of drinks served. Hire professional bartenders (don’t ever use supervisors!) and instruct them to report anyone they feel has “over-enjoyed.” Bartenders should require positive identification from guests who do not appear to be substantially over 21. Drive Away Liability Issues – Arrange for a no-cost taxi service for any employee who feels that he or she should not drive home from the event. Also, if business owners host a party at their home

and are serving alcohol, they should be aware of the personal liability they may face if someone drives off drunk. Invite Their Better Half – Invite spouses and significant others so that there will be someone there to help keep an eye on your employees and, if necessary, get them home safely. Don’t Leave Anyone Hungry — Keep in mind that there may be differing food preferences among employees, including those who are vegetarians, lactose intolerant or don’t eat certain types of meat. Serve a wide variety of offerings to accommodate everyone. Protect Your Image — With smartphone cameras capturing memories of the event and posting on social media sites occurring in real time, a combination of alcohol and social media can be a recipe for disastrous photo posts. Rules are Rules – Remind employees that, while you encourage them to have a good time, your company’s normal workplace standards of conduct will be in force at the party and misconduct at or after the party can result in disciplinary action. www.desertstarweekly.com

Gift-Buying for the Ladies in Your Life

How to Shop Like a Man for a Woman By Larry Jameson The holiday shopping season can mean long lines, crowded malls and uncertainty about what gifts to buy — but shopping for all the women in your life doesn’t have to be frustrating. The perfect gift could be right under your nose and not at the mall. What woman doesn’t want to look and feel beautiful? Enter a beauty brand, such as Mary Kay (marykay.com), which not only understands the kinds of things women enjoy but makes gift-buying easier for guys like me. Treat the ladies on your list right this season with some pointers from the Mary Kay Glam Squad: Festive Reds: Every woman can and should wear red — lips, that is. “Red lips just scream festive!” says makeup artist, Raychel Wade. “I love playing up lip color during the holidays.” Bright red

lipstick, red lip gloss for shine and lip liner for staying power are all useful, she added. Merry and Bright: A recent survey by Mary Kay found that 90 percent of Americans feel more confident when they have a “good skin day.” Give the gift that every woman dreams about: a vibrant, clear complexion. Instead of a spa gift card, consider a gift that keeps on giving, such as a gel mask and cleanser. “For busy moms wanting to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, or for students always on-the-go, an easy skin care routine is crucial — and makes for the perfect holiday gift,” said aesthetician Maria Lekkakos. Scent of the Season: “A new scent is all about making memories and capturing special moments,” said celebrity stylist Suzi Grgurich. With that in mind,

choose something memorable by opting to give perfume and scented soaps. Dash of Color: Look for a

makeup set appropriate for any skin tone. Also, “having pops of color in makeup is so on-trend right now,” said beauty vlogger

Caitlin Ellsworth of Glamourista16. So, get them the gifts they really want — without the yearly shopping panic. (StatePoint)

Receiving Package Deliveries Securely

To reduce the chances of being victimized by package delivery thieves, the Sheriff’s Department offers the following advice: Choose a Shipping Option that requires you to sign for delivery. Check Delivery Status Online so you can try to be home when the package arrives. Some retailers even offer text messages to your cell phone to alert you when items have been delivered. Post a Note on Your Door asking the delivery service to leave the package with a trusted neighbor if you will not be at home, or arrange in advance to have the package shipped to another location. Have the Delivery Company Hold Your Package for customer pick-up at their local shipping facility. Many Thefts Occur in Broad Daylight. Knopfler, Boston Rock ‘Me Decade’ Status Quo By Robert Kinsler Three notable artists who rose to fame in the 1970s — Boston, Dire Straits’ Mark Knopfler and English rock outfit Status Quo — are back with outstanding new albums that will please longtime fans. Artist: Mark Knopfler Title: “Privateering” (Verve) Listen if you enjoy: Dire Straits, Nils Lofgren One of my favorite albums of 2013, the deluxe version of singer-songwriter-guitarist Mark Knopfler’s breathtaking “Privateering” is a cycle of songs

that blends Celtic, country folk and blues styles effortlessly. Many albums released nowadays overstay their welcome and stretch a few tracks too far, but Knopfler’s firstever two-disc effort offers up 20 bona fide gems that rival his sterling work with Dire Straits. Whether exploring the deepest corners of human emotion (“Haul Away,” “Redbud Tree,” “Radio City Serenade”) or simply having a blast (“Corned Beef City,” “Hot or What”), Knopfler’s artful and intelligent songs share the spotlight with his singular guitar-

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. You need to be out and about and involved with groups of friends. It’s best for you if they have a humanitarian purpose. You may be called to lead such group (now or eventually). Your presence accomplishes much. Especially for someone needing to learn, quietly, silently, in the shadows. Silence is a quality of Sag. You’re always called to this Silence. Its potency provides inspiration. You’re inspiring.

Cooperation, cohesion and community — these are the words you like to hear. They define the new world. You will experience a pulling together of resources and efforts from everyone in order to bring a vision into form and matter. County Workforce Project Scores Merit Award were the largest on record. The contraction was due primarily to a decline in new home construction, which hit Riverside County’s economy hard. All supporting industries to residential home construction also suffered double-digit declines — placing many job seekers into the lines of the long-term unemployed. “By collaborating with the renewable energy industry, College of the Desert and valued nonprofits, we were able to provide training programs through project Green Pathways = Green Paydays that have put people back to work,” said Juan De Lara, chair for the Riverside County Workforce Investment

Board’s Eastern Regional Committee. “With an industryrecognized certificate, coupled with the hands-on experience our trainees received, they were first to be hired in jobs that pay a sustainable living wage between $14 and $48 per hour.” Based on industry input, potential trainees were preassessed in math, reading comprehension and mechanical reasoning to analyze their potential success in the class. The training included material needed to pass the North American Board of Certified Electrical Practitioners — the gold standard for solar businesses. Layne Arthur, vice-chair for the Riverside County Workforce Investment Board’s Eastern Regional Committee and Vice President with Balfour Beatty Construction, knows first-hand the importance of obtaining industry-recognized certifications. “Typical solicitations require our project team members to be well-versed and leaders in energy efficiency, such as USGBC LEED accreditation,” Arthur said. “When screening candidate applications for open positions, our initial filters are their level of education / experience and what certifications they maintain.” “We are very excited about being recognized by CSAC December 4, 2013

DHS Gives Itself a 50th Anniversary Fete

Story and Photos By Bruce Montgomery DESERT HOT SPRINGS – Celebrating the eras of California’s Spa City, the Desert Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce, along with the Community Cultural Affairs Commission, hosted the city’s 50th anniversary party on Saturday, Nov. 30. The festivities took place on Pierson Boulevard, west of Palm Drive. The free event featured interactive “Decade Dancing” by Christy Lane Entertainment, live music, community partner and vendor tables decorated in themes from the 1960s / 70s / 80s to current year, hands-on interactive games with the Boys & Girls Club, face painting, popcorn, cotton candy, prizes and a whole lot more. More than 20 local organizations participated, and a perfectly pleasant time was had by all. Bill Cook, Desert Hot Springs Police Officer Kate Singer, Lori Robillard and Debbie Helms (above left) helped the city celebrate half a century, while outgoing DHS Mayor Yvonne Parks and Riverside County Supervisor John Benoit presented a birthday proclamation.

Additions Amp Cheer at The Living Desert

By Frieda Noone PALM DESERT – A joyful several weeks of new life have unfolded at The Living Desert, with two female addax born within two weeks of each other. Lucky visitors were able to observe the births of the calves in as they both occurred during the day in October and November. The births were the successful result of The Living Desert’s addax breeding program. Both of the mothers, Midori and Asani, were bred by the park’s male breeder, Mozzarella. Midori’s calf weighed 6.3 kilograms and Asani’s calf weighed 6.5 kilograms. The two calves passed their wellbaby exams and are now on exhibit with the park’s other four addax. They will be named after zookeepers have had an

opportunity to observe their personalities. “It’s always exciting when new life is born here, and having two addax born within two weeks of each other was especially thrilling,” said Stacey Johnson, president / CEO of The Living Desert. “These two amazing antelope are sure to fascinate our visitors with their unique traits and personalities.” Although critically endangered and extremely rare in their native habitat of the Sahara desert due to unregulated hunting, the addax does well in captivity. Also known as the white antelope and the screwhorn antelope, the addax has long, twisted horns that have two to three twists and are typically 22 to 31 inches long. Addax are a buffy white with a tuft of longer brown

hair on top of the head. The hue of its remaining coat changes with the seasons, turning grayish brown in the winter and almost completely white or sandy blonde in the summer. Addaxes are nocturnal and well adapted to living in the Sahara, since they can live without water for long periods of time. They mainly eat grasses, bushes and leaves. They have a strong social structure and herds are led by the oldest female. The Living Desert also has announced the arrival of Shilo, a three-and-a-half-year-old fossa, to the zoo’s 400-plus wildlife population. The fossa was acquired from the North Dakota Zoo in Bismarck through the Species Survival Plan of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. “Shilo is a beautiful fossa, our

first, and we’re thrilled to have her join our wildlife population,” said Johnson. “Fossas are an endangered species, and fascinating mammals. We’re looking forward to learning what she’ll teach us about her species.” Shilo weighed approximately 13 pounds upon arrival at The Living Desert and is currently in special care and quarantine to monitor her health, wellbeing and behavior in the new surroundings. Fossas are only found in the forests of Madagascar and belong to a unique family of

Malagasy carnivores. Many people became acquainted with fossas in the 2005 DreamWorks animated film “Madagascar,” in which they were humorously portrayed as the villains in the movie. They are extraordinary acrobats, with a long tail that enables them to move so swiftly amongst tree branches. The Living Desert, located 47900 Portola Avenue, is dedicated to conservation and education. For more info, call 760.346.5694 or visit livingdesert.org.
