Covid-19 Hit’s Biz! Long-Time Businesses Prepare To Say Goodbye NBC PS Nico Payne As coronavirus numbers continue to rise and restrictions continue to tighten across the state, several local
businesses have announced that they are closing their doors or closing indefinitely amid the pandemic. Two of the businesses we
spoke to today are dealing with financial hardships, but one local salon says their closing shop because it’s their time and wants to keep people safe. The Coachella Valley is home to many longstanding businesses, some
that have served residents for decades. But the pandemic has forced several of them to close their doors. “It’s In The Bag” has been in the valley for 30 years and is a go-to travel shop, but with flights grounded and

Former Presidents Obama, Bush, and Clinton volunteer to get Covid-19 vaccine
By Desert Star Staff The last three presidents of the US have announced their willingness to be publicly vaccination against coronavirus to prove the jab is safe, as many Americans remain dubious. Barack Obama, George W Bush, and Bill Clinton have all spoken of their faith in the Covid vaccination process and say they are ready to prove it by publicly taking the jab. President Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama, said in an interview released on Thursday that if Dr. Anthony Fauci says the vaccine is safe, he believes him. I may end up taking it on TV or having it filmed, just
so that people know that I trust this science, and what I don’t trust is getting Covid. Meanwhile, both Clinton and Bush have confirmed through their staff that they are keen to publicly promote the vaccine. Freddy Ford, Bush’s chief of staff, told CNN that the 43rd President had been in touch with Fauci and Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response coordinator, to offer his publicity services. “A few weeks ago, President Bush asked me to let Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx know that, when the time is

Create a Pet-Friendly Home This Holiday Season
Photo courtesy of Getty Images By Desert Star Staff This year, holiday gatherings may look different than celebrations in years past. With traditions and large gatherings up in the air, pet parents can take some comfort in knowing they can still celebrate with their pets. Before the festivities begin, however, it’s important for pet parents to ensure their homes are as pet-friendly as possible. Consider these tips from
PetSmart’s resident veterinarian Jennifer Freeman, DVM, and training expert Jodie Havens, CPDT-KSA, to keep pets happy and healthy this holiday season. Teach Good Table Manners Table manners aren’t just for humans. Help prevent begging at the table by refraining from giving your pup food or attention. When you sit down for a meal, place your pet in a crate or pen, or
encourage him or her to go to a special place like his or her bed or a comfortable chair. “Divert your pup’s attention from tempting treats on the holiday table by providing an activity, such as a long-lasting chew or a puzzle toy,” Havens said. If you don’t crate your pet during your holiday meal, avoid sharing human food under the table. “Table scraps such as
gravy and stuffing may look harmless, but even small amounts can lead to serious health issues,” Freeman said. Instead, offer pet-friendly treats that look and taste like the holidays. For example, Simply Nourish Dog Treats come in turkey and cranberry flavors that are alternatives to the real things. If you choose to indulge your pup with a little bit of human food, you can serve small amounts of whitemeat turkey breast, pumpkin, cranberries and yams. Keep your pet away from scallions or chives, onions, garlic, grapes or raisins, cooked bones and anything high in fat. Create a Zen Space The holidays can be hectic, and pets are prone to picking up on stress in the household. Even just one or two guests or stressed out pet parents can give a pet anxiety. Freeman recommends providing pets with a safe getaway. “Stress and extra people in the home may cause your pet to act differently and even show signs of anxiety,” Freeman said. “To set up your pet’s retreat, use a crate or pen he or she is comfortable with, offer blankets or his or her favorite bed and place a few treats or chews inside.”
Exercise Caution When Decorating While families may be brightening up their homes this holiday season, it’s important to ensure decor such as candles and seasonal plants are placed out of your pet’s reach. Flickering candles can be intriguing and seasonal plants like holly and poinsettia are poisonous to dogs and cats. “Try providing a tall cat tree or scratcher near the holiday tree to redirect your kitty to an appropriate climbing apparatus,” Havens said. “The Merry & Bright Holiday House Cat Scratcher can help satisfy your cat’s instincts to scratch in fun, holiday fashion.” Extra decor sometimes means more electrical cords, which can be tempting “chew toys” for your pet. Freeman recommends pet parents take special care to ensure electrical cords for festive lighting are not accessible by taping them down or covering them to help prevent injuries. Also remember to keep glass ornaments, tinsel, pinecones and light stands out of reach of your furry friend. For more pet-friendly tips for the holiday season, visit petsmart.com. Family Features)

Report: Most LGBTQ Adults Face Health-Care Discrimination
By Desert Star Staff More than half of LGBTQ adults experience some form of discrimination from a health care professional, including the use of harsh language, according to a new report. The American Heart Association survey assessed cardiovascular health in LGBTQ adults and found 70% of people who identify as transgender also encounter bias in health care settings. Teri Arnold, director of communications at the Association, is a lesbian who says she faced intolerance from a nurse after she had a heart attack and her wife’s visit made it clear she was gay. “In a situation where you’ve just been through

COVID Soars in Nursing Homes with More Patients of Color
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A new report pinpoints why COVID-19 spread so fast this summer in California nursing homes. The study found skilled nursing facilities that meet recommended staffing levels for Registered Nurses had half the infections compared to those that don’t meet the standards. And the novel coronavirus infection rates are three times higher at facilities with large numbers of African-American patients. According to Kristof Stremekis, director of market analysis and insight with the California Health Care Foundation, which commissioned the report. “This virus disproportionately impacts black and Latinx people in California,” said Stremekis. “And we need to make sure that those facilities which are
serving Black and Latinx patients have the resources that they need to keep people safe.” The report says the risk factors have changed over time. In May, the data showed for-profit nursing homes had infection rates five to six times higher than nonprofit or government-owned facilities. But by August, other risk factors took precedence, with higher rates seen among male patients and people over age 85. The report recommends the state strengthen oversight of nursing-care facilities and require higher staffing levels. Stremekis said as vaccines become available, the data will guide decisions on where to deploy resources first. “It would allow us to prioritize things like the distribution of PPE, like distribution of the vaccine, to get it to folks who need it the most,” said Stremekis. From January to mid-

Cathedral City Receives a Perfect Score from the Human Rights Campaign
Cathedral City is 1 of 94 municipalities in the U.S. to receive the highest rating. By Desert Star Staff CATHEDRAL CITY Dec/2020– The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, an educational entity of the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, released its annual Municipal Equality Index (MEI) Scorecard rating the City of Cathedral City with a perfect score of 100. This is the highest recognition by HRC and comes after a thorough review of Cathedral
City policies and practices, including having both a police department liaison and a city executive officer liaison for the LGBTQ community. The MEI scorecard examined the laws, policies, and services of municipalities and rated them based on their inclusivity of LGBTQ people who live and work there. The HRC Foundation’s Scorecard rated 506 municipalities throughout the United States, with at least one municipality in each of the 50 states. Palm
Springs and Rancho Mirage, Cathedral City’s adjacent neighbors, were the only other cities in the Coachella Valley to receive a perfect score out of the nine Valley cities. The LGBT population within Cathedral City continues to increase in size as recent studies estimate that nearly 30% of Cathedral City residents identify themselves as part of the LGBTQ community. Notably, two of Cathedral City’s five council members identify
themselves as being part of the LGBTQ community. “Receiving HRC’s highest recognition confirms our city’s commitment to equality,” stated Mayor John Aguilar. “Throughout our history, Cathedral City has been a safe haven for the LGBTQ community to live, work, and visit, and that is why my husband and I call it home.” The city council of Cathedral City has been supportive of the LGBT community by hosting
the Cathedral City LGBT Days festival during the last weekend in March as one of the City’sCity’s signature events. It was also the first CityCity in the Coachella Valley to pass a municipal ordinance mandating singlestall public restrooms in Cathedral City to be reclassified as “gender-neutral,” fly a rainbow flag at City Hall and create a “Rainbow Crossing” named after the late Mayor Gregory S. Pettis, the first openly gay elected official in Riverside County.

Despite Confusion, Thousands of Former FL Felons Voted Successfully By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Voting-rights advocates say they’re working to keep the momentum going, registering Floridians with felony convictions so they can vote in future elections. Conflicting court rulings and confusing records were just a few hurdles they faced on Election Day, as Republican lawmakers sought to restrict the return of 1.4 million former felons by requiring they pay all fines and fees before they could vote. Some local elections officials, including in Broward County, said they had to rely on an “honor system” that anyone restored to vote was eligible. Despite the confusion, Neil Volz - deputy director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition - said his group is proud of the outcome. “We think returning

citizens were an undeniable winner in this year’s election,” said Volz, “as over 50,000 people who were unable to vote because of a past felony conviction just two years ago were able to experience democracy in this year’s election.” Florida Secretary of State Laura Lee and Gov. Ron DeSantis both praised the state’s trouble-free election. Still, they have yet to address the process that left election supervisors to overlook the fines-and-fees requirements without clear guidance from the state. Volz said the State of Florida is simply unprepared to carry out its own restrictions. He added that the requirement to pay fines and fees doesn’t apply to all returning citizens because some could’ve received a sentence modification
by a judge or might have been granted voting rights through the Clemency Process, which doesn’t require they be paid in full. “In many respects, the government is acknowledging that they cannot tell people with 100% certainty what their situation is,” said Volz, “and then expecting them to be able to know with 100% certainty what their situation is.” Volz said his group will continue to encourage everyone to vote. It offers legal assistance to anyone in doubt about their eligibility. Voting without being qualified to do so is a crime but if the Division of Elections finds a voter is potentially ineligible, a written notice is sent to the voter, who then has 30 days to respond before any action is taken. December 4, 2020
Amendment 4, passed by Florida voters in 2018, restored voting rights to people who had been convicted of felonies but served their time. (Trimmel Gomes) www.desertstarweekly.com
Porch Pirates on the Prowl as Online Shopping up
Kitty Alvarado Porch pirates caught on camera in Palm Springs. Several videos sent to us from the Neighbors app show several thieves swiping packages from front doors. The thieves are brazen; they don’t seem to mind the cameras or broad daylight; they’re willing to risk getting
caught to get their hands on what’s inside the boxes. Sergeant Mike Casavan, with the Palm Springs Police Department, says package theft is up and widespread this time of year, “With the holiday season we do get a lot of these crimes, you know people are getting packages delivered to their door
especially this year much more than last year when people are shopping from home.” On “Cyber Monday” alone, shoppers spent nearly $11 billion online, an all time record. Research shows 1.7 million packages are stolen every year, resulting in over $25 million in losses. One in three Americans have had one
or more package stolen this year, but the numbers don’t show the pain and frustration caused by this crime. “Aww, your heart just drops … it’s just disappointing it’s sad, you know especially now with the pandemic, we want to share as much as we can with gifts,” Jenn Wood, who lives in Palm Springs, adding that her packages used to disappear around the holidays. Palm Springs resident Lucy Tallarita says it just happened to her, “I looked for it yesterday in the mailbox, and it wasn’t there, and it shows it was tracked and delivered,” adding that the package that vanished was a special gift she bought for her daughter with the little she had, “Well, I feel like crying now because I‘m not working and you feel violated … I’m angry.” But there is something you can do to make sure you get all your packages. The U.S. Postal Service says don’t leave your packages unattended, give specific
delivery instructions, like leave it with a neighbor, request a hold, or pick up location and all that can be done online with a tracking number. Also, some of the large online stores have lockers where your packages can be delivered safely. Wood says she solved her problem with a P.O. Box, ” I get all my packages now.” Casavan says posting videos online and sending them to police are good ideas. Still, the victim must file a police report because only then can they take action and investigate. Those reports are also useful because if they spot a pattern, they can tailor their patrols to stop the crimes. Casavan says if you catch someone in the act, just call 911, “The best thing to do if you’re home is don’t interfere; these are packages that will ultimately be replaced.” Source: NBC Palm Springs December/2020
Diego Maradona dead: Argentinian football legend passes away aged 60 By Desert Star Staff Argentinian football legend and winner of the 1986 World Cup, Diego Maradona, has passed away at home in Tigre after suffering a heart attack. Maradona, 60, was recovering at home following brain surgery in Buenos Aires, where he was treated for a blood clot on the brain earlier this month. Last Friday, Maradona was sedated by medics after the former footballer suffered alcohol dependency issues following his surgery. Doctors described the legend as suffering from a “mix” of serious problems, including cardiovascular and liver problems. It was stated that Maradona would require constant support, including admission to an alcohol addiction clinic, following his discharge from the hospital. However, according to Clarin.com, Maradona suffered a heart attack while recovering at home and passed away shortly afterward. A legendary career Maradona emerged from the youth ranks in the late 1970s at Argentinos Juniors, where he scored 116 goals from 167 games before signing for one of the country’s biggest clubs, Boca Juniors. His talents were soon spotted by Europe’s top scouts. He was lured away to La Liga by Barcelona before joining unfashionable Serie A side Napoli in 1984, where he became a legend. On the international stage, Maradona’s hot-headed nature was on show as he exploded into the Argentina national team ahead of the 1982 World Cup in Spain. But his temper www.desertstarweekly.com
got the better of him when he was sent off for kicking out at Brazilian player Batista in the knockout stages as Argentina crashed out of the tournament. Maradona returned four years later with a point to prove and produced arguably the best tournament performance by a single player in World Cup history as he led Argentina to the top of the world at the 1986 World Cup. His infamous “Hand of God” goal against hated rivals England elevated Maradona, already an icon in his homeland, to even greater heights. In contrast, his second goal in the game, a mesmerizing run from inside his own half, is still regarded by many as the greatest goal ever scored in World Cup history. His career declined after 1986, but he still led Argentina to the final of the 1990 World Cup, where they lost to West Germany. Issues with banned substances marred his appearance four years later at the same tournament in the United States and gave a glimpse of the troubles that would befall him after his career. Maradona latterly stayed in the game as a manager and enjoyed stints with a host of clubs, including Textil Mandiyu, Racing Club, Al-Wasl, Fujairah, Dorados de Sinaloa and, most recently, Gimnasia de La Plata. He also took charge of the Argentina national team between 2008 and 2010 and led the team into the 2010 World Cup, where they were eventually eliminated in the quarter-finals. While Maradona’s successes on the field led to fame and fortune, as well as the reputation as one of, if not the
greatest players to ever play the game, the trappings of success plagued Maradona throughout the latter part of his career and well into his retirement. From the mid-1980s until 2004, Maradona battled cocaine addiction and latterly in his career struggled with his weight. His struggles with
December 4, 2020
obesity eventually led him to undergo gastric bypass surgery. He also struggled with alcohol and was hospitalized in 2007 with hepatitis and the effects of alcohol abuse. This year, he was admitted to the hospital, where he underwent brain surgery for a subdural hematoma. But his recovery
ended in tragedy on November 25 when it was reported by Argentinian outlets that Maradona had passed away. After hearing the news of Maradona’s death, Argentine President Alberto Fernandez has declared three days of national mourning.

‘Hillbilly Elegy’--A True Story About A Family In Crisis
Hi, there, dear readers. Hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving, even though it was tough for most of us to share our holiday dinner with friends and family this year. Hopefully, by next turkey day, all will once again be well in our world. To keep from going stir crazy, I have been reading,
phoning friends and checking out movies on Netflix. This week my film of choice was “Hillbilly Elegy,” based on J.D. Vance’s book “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis.” The story chronicles his upbringing with his family in Appalachia. Glen Close plays Mamaw, J.D.’s scrappy, feisty grandma,
who literally is the glue that holds the family together. She can be loving, but she’s also one tough cookie who once set grandpa (Bo Hopkins) on fire. Luckily her oldest daughter put out the flames, which was a good thing for Papaw and Mamaw as well. As you watch the film, you will find it hard to recognize
Glen Close behind her makeup and frumpy hairstyle as J.D.’s grandmother Mamaw. Mamaw is fiercely protective of her grandson J.D. (Gabriel Basso). And thanks to her, he studies hard, joins the Marine Corps and is eventually accepted by Yale University. However, as he is about to go in for a final interview, he is called home because his mother, Beverly (Amy Adams), is in the hospital following a heroin overdose. Like her son, Beverly is highly intelligent, but her dreams of going to college were derailed when she discovers she is pregnant; from then on, her life is a struggle that leads to depression and drug use. Her erratic behavior, coupled with bad choices, interferes with her mothering skills to the point that Mamaw winds up raising J.D. Thanks to his grandma’s tough love, J.D. eventually gives up friends who negatively influence him and concentrates on his education. As the film begins, J.D. is at a reception for potential Yale candidates. He is nervous and unsure
of his social skills--like using the right silverware for the proper dish. He is also a little testy when some potential candidates tease him about being a “hillbilly.” While it is done in fun, he takes it as a slight. That night as he prepares for his upcoming interview, he is called home due to his mother’s hospitalization. He figures if he drives all night, he can help his mother agree to therapy and still make it back in time for his interview. As he talks with his sister and tries to reason with his mother, memories of his past life come rushing back to him. At this point, Beverly is uncooperative and seems unwilling to seek help. J.D. is worried about leaving her in this state of mental upset. If he goes, will she try to O. D. again? If he stays, will it do any good? And if he misses his interview, will his dreams for a better future be derailed? “Hillbilly Elegy” from Netflix is rated R for language throughout, drug content and some violence. Running time is1 hour, 57 minutes.

NBC PS Taylor Martinez COACHELLA (CNS) – Free coronavirus testing will be available at two Catholic churches in the eastern Coachella Valley starting this weekend, officials announced Wednesday. Facebook BANS false claims about Covid vaccines By Desert Star Staff Social media giant Facebook says it is cracking down on Covid-19 vaccine misinformation and will remove “false claims” posted to Facebook or Instagram, which will have been debunked by public health experts. In a company blog post on Thursday, Facebook said that it would be combating misinformation about Covid-19 vaccines as the world prepares for the roll-out of several inoculations against the disease. Facebook’s previous policy was only to remove claims about Covid-19, which it said could lead to “imminent physical harm.” On Thursday, it said the new move was an extension of its commitment to “remove misinformation about the virus that could lead to imminent physical harm. This could include false claims about the safety, efficacy, ingredients or side effects of the vaccines.”
For example, we will remove false claims that COVID-19 vaccines contain microchips or anything else that isn’t on the official vaccine ingredient list. Facebook added that it would “remove conspiracy theories about COVID-19 vaccines that we know today are false,” such as claiming that “specific populations are being used without their consent to testing the vaccine’s safety.” In November, the company reported that it had removed 12 million pieces of misinformation about Covid-19 in seven months, according to its internal guidelines. According to Facebook, many of the posts removed already have related to false cures and conspiracy theories, such as one connecting the pandemic with 5G networks. On Monday, the company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, said it would be looking for more ways to respond to the coronavirus pandemic.
“We’re already planning a push around authoritative information about the vaccines,” Zuckerberg noted, though he did not elaborate. The social media firm’s announcement comes a day after the UK became
the first nation to approve a vaccine for roll-out, with the first jabs planned to be administered next week. Despite the severe impact of the virus on health and the global economy to date, many people are still wary about
receiving a vaccine. A poll released in mid-November by analytics company Gallup found that only 58 percent of Americans would opt to receive a Covid-19 vaccine when one becomes available.

People’s attitudes concerning a return to normalcy, coupled with the impending widespread distribution of a COVID-19 vaccine next year, should eventually work together to significantly cut down unemployment,” said Jill Gonzalez, WalletHub analyst. “Until a vaccine gets widely

Pandemic, Employment Take Toll on NV Mental Health By Desert Star Staff CARSON CITY, Nev. -- Financial and emotional stressors take a toll on Nevadans’ mental health as the pandemic continues and the holidays near. Since the pandemic began, Nevada’s National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has seen a significant increase in calls to its “warm line,” a telephone line for folks who want to talk about their mental health but aren’t in crisis. www.desertstarweekly.com
Robin Reedy, executive director of NAMI Nevada, said 40% to 50% of this year’s calls mentioned COVID-19 as a stressor. Nearly 30% cited employment. And 50% to 80% of the calls were for depression, anxiety and social isolation. Reedy added as it gets colder, access to housing and food security are becoming increasingly urgent. “While they’re not directly mental health issues, they are,” Reedy explained.
“Because without a roof over your head and food, you’re not worried about therapy or medications or getting a prescription.” The Silver State is ranked 51st overall by Mental Health America for its prevalence of mental illness and limited access to mental health services. Reedy contended that’s due to workforce shortages of psychologists and psychiatric nurses and transportation and communication issues. December 4, 2020
Reedy observed the massive expansion of telehealth has been extremely useful. She said it’s something NAMI Nevada and others in the mental-health support community have been pushing for years, but it’s never been a priority for the state until now. “Not for everyone, but for those people that it works for,” Reedy maintained. “Because we have transportation problems, communication problems, all across the state and telehealth
could help with that.” Reedy noted because funds for mental-health services come from the state’s general fund, they’re the first to be cut in an economic downturn. She and NAMI are urging the state to dedicate specific funds to these services and ensure there’s funding parity between mental and physical health.
