Victory for Standing Rock The Dakota Access Corporation was not granted the easement needed to built pipeline. By Desert Star Staff STANDING ROCK — Today, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that it would not be granting an easement under Lake Oahe for the Dakota Access pipeline to cross the Missouri River a half mile upstream of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe reservation. The Corps further
stated that it plans to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for alternative routes. These actions trigger a new round of public involvement processes to permit the final piece of the pipeline as required by the National Environmental Policy Act. The decision is major victory for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe
and all who stood in solidarity over the last few months. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, represented by Earthjustice, brought a lawsuit against the Corps for its approvals for the pipeline in July of this year. The lawsuit claimed that the Corps violated multiple environmental and historic preservation statutes, focusing
By Desert Star Staff From recount efforts to criticism of the Electoral College as an institution and death threats to some electors, the aftermath of the US presidential election has become no less controversial than the campaign itself – and the heat is far from over. Jill Stein-initiated efforts to recount votes. The recount effort underway in three states – Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania – spearheaded by Green Party candidate Jill Stein is being opposed in all states by lawsuits from Donald Trump supporters. On Friday, a lawsuit was filed on the President-elect’s behalf to stop the ballot review in Michigan, the state where
Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by 10,700 votes. Unless a court intervenes, a recount could start in that state as soon as next Wednesday. While Stein has asked a federal judge to order Michigan to quickly begin the recount, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette has stepped in with an effort to “immediately” prohibit the recount. “The Attorney General asks this Court to immediately issue a writ of mandamus to prohibit the recount of presidential ballots because Stein is not an aggrieved candidate under Michigan law,” Republican Schuette wrote in his lawsuit, stressing that Stein only received approximately one percent of the nearly 4.8 million ballots cast in
the state on November 8. Prior to that, in Wisconsin, two pro-Trump super PACs filed a lawsuit in the Western District of Wisconsin, arguing that Stein is “not entitled” to a ballot recount, warning that the whole effort could “cast doubt on upon the legitimacy of President-Elect Donald J. Trump’s victory.” Trump, who is touring part of the US with his “Thank You Tour,” made the same claims in a lawsuit filed on his behalf by the Republican Party and his campaign in Pennsylvania. Their main argument points to Stein’s failure to provide any evidence that the state’s electronic voting machines had malfunctioned or been hacked.
on the decision to reroute the pipeline from Bismarck, North Dakota to the doorstep of the Standing Rock reservation without and adequate environmental analysis and consultation. At various times, pipeline construction has been subject to court injunctions due to the litigation. The Corps granted permits
for the pipeline in July 2016 under a highly streamlined approval process known as Nationwide Permitting. The process circumvents any kind of close environmental review and public process. The Lake Oahe crossing requires an additional approval — known Continues on Page 6

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The McCallum Theatre held its biggest once a year fundraiser on Nov. 30th. The yearly Gala raised a record 1.5 millions dollars through ticket sales and donations. Five local philanthropists donated $100,000, and many donated $50,000 each. Many donated other amounts that provide the entertainment and programs for our youth in the Desert. The McCallum is a non-profit theatre so it takes many people involved to make it self-sufficient and staying at the black. The McCallum honored revered philanthropist, JoAnn McGrath, as an outstanding humanitarian and supporter of the Theatre. McGrath has donated over 2.5 million dollars to the McCallum theatre over the years. McCallum Board Chair, Harold Matzner, Cochairs Helene Galen and Jan

The President and CEO Mitch Gershenfeld said the gala raised the bar in donations that help the Theatre get the best entertainment and continue with all its programs. Gershenfeld said they have made many improvements to the Theatre, so they can continue to be financially solid. Entertainment was provided by Pink Martini, an Internationally known band. China Forbes was the lead singer for the show. They sang a lot of songs in a foreign language that they are known for. A guest entertainer, Meow Meow, had the audience laughing with her antics with male members from the audience, then she sang a song that showed she has a great voice and is just not a comedienne on stage.

Tax Strategies Based on ‘Trumponomics’ Tax Law Changes
Before this year ends, we must consider that many changes in taxes will most likely get pushed through our Republicancontrolled Congress. For wealthy Americans, the outcome of the 2016 election could be lucrative because President Elect Trump has proposed a $6.2 trillion in tax cuts over the next decade, with the top 1 percent by income getting almost half the benefit. That translates into a 13.5 percent boost to their after-tax income, compared to a 1.8 percent increase for taxpayers in the middle fifth of incomes.

Rich Americans generally have the most flexibility in taking advantage of these tactics, but middle-income taxpayers, including retirees, should also consider taking steps now that might save them extra money in the event of a tax cut. To lower your tax bill in any given year, consider pushing as much income as possible into future years and taking as many deductions as possible for the current year. Small-business owners, along with those who earn commissions have more flexibility in deciding when to take income and deductions, than salaried workers have. They have more flexibility in when they bill clients and pay employees. To lower their taxable profits in 2016, consider paying employee bonuses into 2016, instead of early next year. To boost deductions on their 2016 taxes, consider making any large purchases this year. If you are selling a business, wait until next year when there’s a chance you’ll be able to keep more of the proceeds. By Selling a stock that’s done well in December, you’ll owe taxes on those gains in four months, by the Internal Revenue Service deadline in mid-April, however by waiting until January, taxes aren’t due for more than a year. It’s the opposite for investments that have done poorly. Taxpayers
can “harvest” losing stocks at the end of the year by selling them and then using those losses in April to lower their bill. The tax break on a 401(k) or individual retirement account will be less valuable in future years if tax rates fall. Salaried employees can maximize their contributions to their 401(k) s and other pre-tax retirement accounts in 2016. Even if this means they have less to save next year, the trade-off may be worth it.Taxpayers can deduct medical expenses if they amount to more than 10 percent of their income or 7.5 percent for taxpayers 65 and older. If you are having an expensive procedure, you might try to get it done before the end of the year, as the current curative
deduction might be more valuable than in 2017. If you’re living off a 401(k) or IRA, it might make sense to stop taking money from those accounts through the end of the year, as long as you have enough cash to meet your needs.By lowering your distributions from pretax retirement accounts in 2016, you’ll lower your tax bill this year and potentially end up paying a lower rate when you replenish your cash supply next year. Since you get to deduct local taxes, property taxes or state income taxes, and mortgage interest deduction considers shifting those deductions into 2016. An extra mortgage payment in 2016 might make sense.
are being held accountable for their decisions, have agenda packets, and have committed to come prepared. Those in the audience have not the liability, preparation or responsibility. That is why it is critical that attendees not participate in board discussions, but instead listen. Interrupting disrupts the board’s discussion and interferes with the ability of other attendees to listen. Open forum is the time for members to speak, and directors to listen. Outside of open forum, the board discusses while the members listen. Consider these guidelines: DIRECTORS: Set reasonable time limits. Most associations allow 2 or 3 minutes per speaker. Have a timekeeper give members a “30 second warning” to help them. The law does not require speakers identify their topic in advance, so don’t require it. Do not interrupt, argue with, or respond to the speakers during their time. Listen to the speakers, take notes, and demonstrate attentiveness to their concerns. Do not record open forum comments in
the meeting minutes – comments are not action. Some owners may disagree or even criticize the board. Deal with it-- directors do not know everything, and the speaker might have a valid point. After open forum concludes, the chair should inquire if anything mentioned in open forum should be referred to a committee or management. If any questions can be immediately answered, then provide the answers. Be consistent. The Chair should not allow comments from the floor once open forum is closed, and also should stop directors from interrupting open forum remarks. Consider reopening open forum on issues of major importance or otherwise where the board desires member input on a specific topic. Do not discuss open forum topics. In open forum, members can discuss anything. Except for emergencies, the board only discusses agenda items. Adopt board meeting rules. Inform attendees how meetings are run, and set decorum standards. TO ASSOCIATION MEMBERS:
If you give a certain amount to a charitable organization every year, consider doubling it this year and taking the next year off. Make sure you are not taking too many deductions in 2016 as it could trigger the alternative minimum tax, or AMT, an extremely complicated system designed to limit deductions for well-off taxpayers. HOA Homefront – How Open is Open Forum? By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. Mr. Richardson: I read your column most weekends with great interest. One subject I do not recall seeing handled recently is the right to speak at board meetings. Our association has a Homeowners Forum for owners. However some owners also claim the right to speak on all agenda subjects, effectively codeliberating with the Board. This would make an interesting subject for a future column. J.L., Oceanside
Dear J.L.: The Open Meeting Act at Civil 4925(b) requires all membership or open board meetings have a time for members to speak. A properly used open forum is a very valuable meeting feature. Some associations avoid open forum, while others have unrestricted open forum. Both extremes are unhealthy. Except for closed sessions, members may observe board deliberation, but the law does not give members the right to participate. The directors

Focus on your main point and not everything you can think of. Address HOA issues, not global warming or high taxes. Don’t bring a long list of questions and demand that each be immediately answered. It may take time to provide the requested information. Control your behavior. Yelling, cursing, insulting, or other abusive behavior is never acceptable. Arizona A.G. Joins Lawsuit to Limit Habitat Protections
The California condor is one of 65 endangered species in Arizona. (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service) By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX -- Conservation groups are vowing to intervene in a new lawsuit filed against the federal government by
the attorneys general of 18 states, including Arizona. The suit seeks to invalidate some rules added to the Endangered Species Act by
the Obama Administration. The rules limit development on lands designated as critical habitat, even if the endangered species doesn’t currently
By Desert Star Staff MALIBU, Calif. - The mountain lion known as “P-45” that is roaming the Los Angeles area now is in hunters’ sights over the deaths last weekend of at least 10 domestic alpacas. It’s just one example of the growing tensions between civilization and nature, prompting new interest in building a wildlife crossing over the busy 101 freeway. State Sen. Fran Pavley, D-Agoura Hills, said it would be the largest such manmade crossing in the world, over the major commuter route that bisects the state. “Now the real work begins,” she said. “The land is saved on each side of the freeway. We have to raise millions of dollars to construct an overpass over the busy 10-lane freeway.”
Pavley and supporters of the project broke ground before Thanksgiving on the contentious 71 acres that would be the connecting point for a future land bridge over the 101. Opponents have balked at the ambitious size of the wildlife corridor, saying the land near the freeway had been slated for commercial development in the past decade. Pavley said many types of wildlife could use a land bridge, since the freeway creates an artificial boundary that limits their natural habitat. “And what happens if they can’t crisscross it? They end up breeding and having babies,” she said, “and then you become overpopulated and sort of trapped, if you
will, in an area that becomes almost like an island.” What the project needs most is money, Pavley said, adding that tens of millions of dollars still have to be raised. The state transportation department will design and build the wildlife overpass, but the lion’s share will come from private funds. “So, we’re not spending state money that goes for specific purposes like schools and roads,” she said. “This is done through donations of people who think keeping some of Los Angeles County wild is worth the efforts.” The Southern California overpass might be the biggest but it wouldn’t be the first. Colorado, Montana, Washington and some parts of Europe also
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Bureau of Land Management has finalized rules that encourage increased solar and wind
energy production on public lands, and it’s making California a priority. The policies create a competitive process similar to the way oil and gas leases
are granted. The new rules also offer financial incentives to steer production away from key environmental, cultural and recreational resources, said Alex Daue, assistant
live in that specific area. Brett Hartl, endangered species policy director at the Center for Biological Diversity, defended the rules, saying they protect lands that allow species like the endangered Sonoran Pronghorn to return to their ancestral habitat. “If they have an area that’s unoccupied that is really a great place for the pronghorn to live,” Hartl said. “An agency can’t destroy it - because then, there’s no possibility that it could recover by re-expanding into that area where it used to be found. “ There are 65 endangered species in Arizona - 21 are plants; 44 are animals, including the California condor. Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich has joined the lawsuit along with officials
from neighboring states of Nevada and New Mexico. They allege the rules amount to an unconstitutional land grab by federal officials. Hartl said his group will join the lawsuit on the side of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and hopes to prevent a future Trump administration from discarding the rule and settling the case. “The Republican attorney generals see an opportunity now, with a different administration coming down the pike, to get rid of these rules and to make it a lot easier for really harmful types of development to proceed without much of a check, “ Hartl said. If the rules are lifted, he said, many endangered species could be further penned in by future development.

director of energy and climate at The Wilderness Society. “And this rule will ensure that our public lands continue to be a place where we can build wind and solar projects delivering clean energy, growing our economy and protecting the places that people love in the West,” Daue said. The BLM said that putting some 700,000 acres of public lands to work in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah should help the agency reach the Obama administration’s goal of developing 20,000 megawatts of renewable power by 2020. Shifting political winds after Donald Trump’s upset victory have put the future of many of the current administration’s environmental initiatives into question, notably the EPA’s Clean Power Plan. Daue said he is confident the BLM’s new
policies can withstand the GOP control of the White House and Congress. “With the rule-making, BLM will be receiving fair market value for the use of public lands as called for by Congress. And western communities strongly support more renewable energy development,” Daue said. “We think that it will stand on its own merits and should stand the test of time.” Under the old rules, he added, getting a permit for development could take up to two years, but the new streamlined process should cut that time by more than half for areas with high power-generation potential. The regulations will become effective 30 days after they are published in the Federal Register.

Time- and Budget-Stretching Tips for the Self-Employed
By Desert Star Staff The ability to stretch a budget can help businesses or those who are selfemployed weather lean times and flourish in good periods, and being efficient with time can mean surviving a busy season with your sanity intact. But these principles can be hard to uphold. To help, here are a few tips to assist freelancers, entrepreneurs and small business owners to make more happen with existing resources. Seek Out Resources: Taking care of certain logistics is easier these days, as retailers like Staples offer resources for small businesses, such as their Small Business Hub, where you can design and order business cards, print marketing flyers and posters, get invitations, announcements, calendars and brochures, many on the same day that you place the order. “When you are on a tight schedule, having one place where you can go that meets a bulk of your small business needs is extremely
useful,” says Melanie Salinas a photographer and the blogger behind “Story of Five.” Salinas, who recently partnered with Staples as part of their #MakeMoreHappen campaign to help small business owners learn about resources to help them get things done, is a frequent user of both Staples’ online hub, as well as their instore Copy & Print center. Keep Expenses Organized: “Don’t mix business with pleasure. Easier said than done when you’re working from home, but it’s a must. Keep business expenses separate from family expenses,” says Salinas. It may seem like an extra step now, but you can avoid accounting headaches and help make tax time a breeze by staying organized. Good organization will also help ensure you don’t overlook expenses that could lower your taxes. Create a Workspace: If you are looking to take your business to the next level, it’s important that you have
a dedicated workspace where you can get stuff done. Look to programs like Staples Rewards to get cash back on purchases, special coupons and deals. “Even if it’s just a corner of your bedroom, creating a functional workspace will help you boost productivity,” says Kayla Buell, who runs “Gen Y Girl,” a Millennial career and lifestyle blog, who recommends sprucing up the area with supplies and décor that inspire and motivate you. Use Time Wisely: Marketing yourself or promoting your business can be tough, especially if your days are full working for existing customers and keeping your business going. “Promoting sounds like a lot of work when you’re bursting at the seams, but you have to communicate with people you want to hire you,” says Susan and William Brinson, who own a thriving photography business and blog at “House of Brinson.” “We use the weeks where we’re slow -- around the
OLYMPIA, Wash. - Access to paid family and medical leave should be a priority, according to a new survey. The study, funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, found support among registered voters across every demographic, with 82 percent saying they consider paid family leave “important” or “very important.” Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner,
co-founder and chief executive of MomsRising, cited an economic advantage for businesses as well. “Businesses are boosted in the studies that have been done in places that have passed this policy, like the state of California,” she said, “and found that when businesses have paid family leave in place, it actually increases retention, productivity
and lowers recruitment and retraining costs, which is no small matter.” Medical leave, which also was included in this survey, would allow employees to take time off for serious injuries. It also would allow them time off to care for sick or injured family members - including parents, grandparents, children and siblings. Rowe-Finkbeiner said she

on social media. Give yourself a cushion -- both on your calendar and in your wallet. Smart approaches to running your business will boost your productivity and stretch your budget. StatePoint
hears from mothers across the state who have struggled without paid leave. In one case, a Wenatchee woman - working at a job that did not offer paid family leave - was told her employer would hold her job for a month after she had her baby. But there was no child care available for newborns until they’re three months old in her area. She had no choice but to resign and move back into her parents’ house. “Financially, she’s yet to recover, even though her
child is now 4 1/2 years old,” Rowe-Finkbeiner said. “Now, she has three part-time jobs, and she’s still not able to get work for more than 20 hours a week, and none of them are in the field that she trained in.” Washington state lawmakers passed a paid family leave bill in 2007, but never approved a way to fund the policy. RoweFinkbeiner says supporters will push to fix that during the 2017 legislative session.

Statement from Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Chairman, Dave Archambault II: “We wholeheartedly support the decision of the administration and commend with the utmost gratitude the courage it took on the part of President Obama, the Army Corps, the Department of Justice and the Department of the Interior to take steps to correct the course of history and to do the right thing. “We want to thank everyone who played a role in advocating for this cause. We thank the tribal youth who initiated this movement. We thank the millions of people around the globe who expressed support for our cause. We thank the
thousands of people who came to the camps to support us, and the tens of thousands who donated time, talent, and money to our efforts to stand against this pipeline in the name of protecting our water. We especially thank all of the other tribal nations and jurisdictions who stood in solidarity with us, and we stand ready to stand with you if and when your people are in need. “With this decision we look forward to being able to return home and spend the winter with our families and loved ones, many of whom have sacrificed as well. We look forward to celebrating in wopila, in thanks, in the coming days.” Statement from Jan Hasselman, Earthjustice attorney who represented the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in their lawsuit: “Today is a historic day both for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and for indigenous people everywhere. This pipeline never should have
been routed near these sacred lands in the first place, and it absolutely never should have received permits without a thorough and meaningful discussion of the risks and benefits to affected Indian Tribes. The announcement that a full environmental impact statement will be prepared is a huge step towards rational decision-making for a
Republic,” the petition states, adding “there is no reason Trump should be President. It’s the ‘People’s Will.’” Several Electoral College electors resigned to avoid casting their votes for Trump, and at least seven more, Democrats in Colorado and Washington State who call themselves the Hamilton Electors, will not vote for either Trump or Clinton and cast protest votes for a candidate not named. These Hamilton Electors are planning to try to convince Republican electors to vote for a third candidate in the hope that this move may put the Electoral College into deadlock or elect a different candidate. ‘Throw yourself in front of a bus’: Electors harassed ahead of December 19 vote Electors who are to cast their votes for Trump say they are being harassed. One of the most recent cases involved Michigan Electoral College member Michael Banerian, who says he will vote for Trump despite receiving death threats. Banerian told RT that he has received “hundreds and hundreds of e-mails,
Facebook messages, and letters to my home about four or five a day, tweets.” “And in some messages, unfortunately, there were death wishes and generally angry messages from people who can’t accept the results of the US election,” he said. Earlier, in interviews with the US media, Banerian claimed that he had received death threats saying “I’m going to put a bullet in the back of your mouth,” and other ill wishes, such as “I hope you die” or “do society a favor and throw yourself in front of a bus.” According to Banerian, abolishing the Electoral College “would leave so many Americans’ voices out of the process.” “[It is] One of those situations is when you are on a losing side and look for every possibility to change the outcome so that you can come out on top, and right now we have people on the left, they are upset with Donald Trump winning,” he said. Texas’ elector Alex Kim, who also says he has received threats, told the US media that he responds with a simple

this reckless gamble.” Please visit our main resource page for background information: http://earthjustice. org/features/faq-standingrock-litigation Here are more details about the Environmental Impact Statement process: http://www.spk.usace. army.mil/Missions/Regulatory/ Permitting/EnvironmentalImpact-Statements/ Source: EarthJustice
Electoral system shaken, calls for recounts underline tensions in US Continued from Page 1
“There is no evidence – or even an allegation – that any tampering with Pennsylvania’s voting systems actually occurred,” a complaint by Trump’s lawyers read. Electoral College under fire The institution of the Electoral College, which secured Trump’s victory despite Hillary Clinton winning the popular vote, is under attack from petitions requesting that it be abolished or that the election results be reconsidered. Quite a number of US media outlets came up with opinion pieces calling for abolishing Electoral College. A petition calling upon electors in the Electoral College to ignore their states votes and make Hillary Clinton president instead of Trump has gained a record number of signatures – over 4.7 million.“Why? Mr. Trump is unfit to serve. His scapegoating of so many Americans, and his impulsivity, bullying, lying, admitted history of sexual assault, and utter lack of experience make him a danger to the
Party has been in power and they’ve become more and more insulated; they’ve stopped listening to other people’s opinions,” he said. “The Democrats, who previously were in charge, are all of a sudden terrified. They don’t know what’s happening. As they’ve just not been listening to the American people for 8 years. Even though Trump did not win the popular vote, he still won the electoral vote. The time to have a discussion about the role of the Electoral College would have been before the election, but not after results that a lot of people don’t like have come in.”
message: “You may all go to hell, and I shall go to Texas.” Although none of the above-mentioned political maneuvers is likely to prevent Trump from being sworn in on January 10, they pour oil onto the fire of political divisions burning throughout the country. It’s ridiculous that people in the US are being pressured and even threatened into violating their agreements for the sake of a “political coup d’etat,” Arvin Vohra, Vice Chair of the Libertarian National Committee, told the press. “The fact that this is happening just shows how out of touch a lot of big government folks have become. Death toll from Oakland warehouse fire rises to 33
Smoke pours from a warehouse, which caught fire during a dance party in Oakland, California, U.S. December 3, 2016. © Seung Lee / Handout via Reuters / Reuters By Desert Star Staff At least 33 people lost their lives in the inferno which destroyed a California artist space on Friday night, Oakland mayor has confirmed. UPDATE: Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf confirmed at a press briefing that the death toll had risen to 33.She said that a criminal investigation team has
been deployed and inspectors are at the scene. Schaaf added that the humane removal of victims is the city’s first priority. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Department said it was unclear how many people are left inside. The victims range from teenagers to people in their 30s, and reportedly include foreign nationals.
Earlier, Alameda County Sheriff Sargent Ray Kelly told reporters on Sunday that the death toll from the venue, dubbed the Oakland Ghost Ship, had spiked from 24 to 30. Investigators at the site are still trying to determine the cause of the deadly fire. Earlier, Kelly said arson was not suspected and that the
warehouse isn’t currently being viewed as a crime scene. Eighty percent of the building has yet to be searched, Melinda Drayton, battalion chief at the Oakland Fire Department, said. The search will be a “long and arduous process,” as the firefighters have been going through the debris, “bucket by bucket,” she said. “It was quiet; it was heartbreaking,” Drayton added. People are still reporting missing relatives and friends who were among the crowd at the ill-fated show. The blaze broke out in a converted warehouse on 31st Ave in Oakland during a party advertised as a ‘Rave Cave,’ which was part of musician Golden Donna’s West Coast tour. The fire raged for several hours, requiring over 50 firefighters to douse. There have been reports that the building had no sprinkler system, and it appears that no smoke detectors went off during the blaze.
Deli Must Pay Damages for Retaliating Against Workers By Desert Star Staff NEW HAVEN, Conn. - A New Haven grocery store has been ordered to pay more than 175-thousand dollars for retaliating against workers. Two years ago, the owner of Gourmet Heaven was arrested for stealing a quartermillion dollars in wages from two dozen workers who had worked 72-hour weeks for as little as $3 an hour. The back wages finally were paid and charges were dropped, but then six of the workers who had cooperated in the investigation were fired or had their hours reduced. James BhandaryAlexander, a staff attorney with New Haven Legal Assistance, said that was a violation of federal and state law. “This is a major victory,” he said. “We’re particularly thankful to the judge for upholding the rule of law, and ensuring that free-speech rights and wage and hour rights apply to every person in the state.” The court has indicated that Gourmet Heaven may be liable for additional damages as more evidence is submitted in the case. Wage theft isn’t uncommon. According to John Lugo, a member of Unidad Latina en Accion, Goodfellas restaurant has just settled a lawsuit over refusing to pay minimum wage and overtime to former kitchen workers. He described Goodfellas as a repeat offender. “We did a FOIA request with the Labor Department, and we found out that he www.desertstarweekly.com

HOROSCOPES ARIES
In the next month assess the many ways you are valuable. Let this not be difficult. Ponder upon and make an ongoing list of your abilities, kindnesses, good deeds, plans for Goodwill. Then you see your value. Place lists on walls, doors and mirrors, reading them each day. This is the beginning of your self-identity as part of the New Group of World Servers.
TAURUS Things go into hiding for a while…especially you, for rest and protection. Someone else is hiding, too. They are very valuable to you. Tend to them with care. They’re knowledgeable and have skills needed for your next creative stage and for humanity’s educational future. Money too is hidden at this time. However, it’s still available but you must call it forth, using it for practical things. Like land for community.
GEMINI Past friends, relationships, groups and a previous resource may have appeared or be on your mind. They are valuable to you…lights shining in the darkness. A certain group, also from the past, holds the Love/Wisdom (Ray 2, Gemini’s ray) you need and therefore seek. It holds the new language and study of symbols allowing you entrance into the Temple of Learning. Do you hesitate?
DECEMBER 7 – 13, 2016 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES
CANCER
Study the Laws of the Soul.
Ponder upon the different ways you want to be seen, known and recognized. Are you interested in the new culture and civilization? You are to nurture the new era at its foundation with visions of the future How is your garden? Do you have a worm bin; do you know how to create biodynamic soil? Remember to share your discoveries. Cancer teaches humanity how to feed and nurture themselves.
LIBRA
LEO The next nine months you reassess goals, hopes, wishes and aspirations. Earth’s resources (soil, trees, plants) are vital for your health and well-being. Stand in the Sun and work in nature - the most balanced kingdom. Earth and sky radiations strengthen heart and mind, refocus enthusiasm (“filled with God”), allowing practicality to emerge. Are you feeling restricted from too many responsibilities?
VIRGO You may struggle to maintain equilibrium between the many desires that arise in daily life. There may be a sense of confusion, or perhaps a wounding. You want to create something new and vital. A hint. The new art has its foundation in astrology and heavenly symbols. Study the electric universe. All that you learn now creates a new foundation for yourself and where you live.
You are becoming a new person. Expanding with new knowledge and new aspirations. It’s important to travel now. Not far, but here and there and roundabout. Seeing different neighborhoods allows you to see differences and to compare them to your life. This leads to gratitude, the theme of the season. A new creativity is about to come forth. This is your season of practicing Goodwill in all your worlds.
SCORPIO Tend to all daily things, small and necessary, with all your attention and awareness. Observe habits, agendas, thoughts, hopes, how you care for yourself, your work, all environments and everyone in your many worlds. We evolve slowly by tending to physical, emotional, then mental needs, progressing to the Soul. Each day “brood upon your service (work) for the coming day”. This is Soul work. The personality then becomes calm and quiet. Revelations occur.
SAGITTARIUS There is a working upon the self, a restructuring and renewing. You may not know this is occurring. Saturn has taken you in hand and wants you to see things differently. First the past and all your accomplishment. Then the
present where you must wait in quiet and silence. Silence is the Sagittarius pathway. In Sag one must listen to the Sound of Silence so ideas from higher realms can impress the mind. No more clashing symbols.
CAPRICORN You’re neither sentimental nor emotional. You see the need for practical nourishment and realize one source of nourishment is financial security. How would this security look in terms of work, home and land? Each area you live and work in calls for order and organization, purity of focus, warmth, color and quality. Do you have an area set aside for your creative arts? Should communication wound, be still and turn the other cheek.
AQUARIUS It’s possible important people and events from the past appear again for review. We learn from life experiences and eventually we create rules or directive from what we’ve learned. You have eliminated the unnecessary already. Allow nothing from the past to rewound you. There may be travel plans coming up. Careful. They may change unexpectedly. All of humanity must now learn to adaptable very quickly
PISCES Life calls you back into the world and you respond with
assurance and confidence. There is an emphasis on participating in groups. The new spiritual law is learning now takes place in groups and not necessarily individually. The Soul is group oriented. And the Soul is what is manifesting in our world now. There is a connection between religious studies and the occult (white magic, hidden sciences, astrology, Ageless Wisdom teachings, the hidden Bible, esoteric, etc.). First Post-Election ‘Fight for $15’ Rally Tomorrow By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES — The election that gave Republicans control of the White House and both houses of Congress isn’t stopping the grassroots “Fight for $15” movement, which is sponsoring what it calls a “National Day of Disruption” on Tuesday. The group is planning rallies
and workers will participate in scattered strikes at McDonald’s restaurants across 340 cities. Airport workers will also rally at Los Angeles International and San Francisco International Airports. Ana Espindola, a wheelchair attendant at LAX, said that after this election, the fight for a living wage is more important than ever.
“It’s a huge setback - that’s why I think it’s so important that we still keep pushing, Espindola said. “We still have to fight - we can’t just say, ‘Well, you know, he’s elected; we have to give up. There’s nothing we can do.’ I’m not the kind of person to just sit back and cross my hands and be like, ‘Well, you know,
we’re defeated. That’s it.’” President-elect Donald Trump has taken multiple positions on the minimum wage. And the House of Representatives hasn’t allowed a hearing or a vote on the idea of increasing the national minimum wage from $7.25 an hour since they defeated a bill in 2010 and filibustered another in 2014. California’s minimum wage is currently $10 an hour. In the spring of 2016, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill that will raise it to $10.50 as of January 1, 2017 and begins a gradual increase to $15 an hour by 2022.
Rico Johnson, an employee at Taco Bell, said he appreciates the momentum and will be at the rally in L.A. “We’re organizing to get our voices out there,” Johnson said. “We’ve got to ensure that everything that we’ve done thus far does not stop - that it cannot stop. There’s too many families out here who are struggling.” Tuesday marks the fourth anniversary of Fight for $15’s first victory. And on Nov. 8, voters in four states - Arizona, Colorado, Maine and Washington - approved increasing their minimum wages.

E N T E RTA I N M E N T ‘Moana’--a Polynesian Folk Tale From Disney BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
There is now a chill in the air as the holidays approach. It’s a time when a South Sea Island vacation might be on your wish list. It’s also a time when you want to take your kids to see a family friendly movie--preferably an animated one. If such a tropical vacation is beyond your price range, never fear. Just pack up the family and take them to see Disney’s “Moana” with a screenplay by Jared Bush who also wrote the perfectly delightful “Zootopia.” The film was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. This dynamic duo also directed “The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin” and “Hercules.” The music for “Moana” was composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the Tony Award winning smash hit “Hamilton” and fellow composers Opetaia Foa’l and Mark Mancina. The songs throughout are pleasant and in tune with the story, but are not as memorable and hummable as “Under the Sea” or “Kiss the Girl” from “Little Mermaid.”

“Moana” begins on the lush, fertile island of Motunui and it is clear, from the very beginning, that baby Moana loves the sea and the sea loves her in return. The daughter of the chief, Moana will one-day rule her people. Sadly, long before she is out of her teens, the island faces a terrible problem. Their bountiful crops are suddenly starting to rot in the fields and the fish are no longer abundant in the surrounding sea. To restore the natural order to the island someone must find the demigod Maui (voiced and sung by Dwayne Johnson, who imbues his character with playful charm and mischief.) Now a young teen, Moana (Auli’l Cravalho) is encouraged by her feisty grandmother to search for Maui and make him return “the Heart of Te Fiti”, a magical gem-like stone, which he stole over a century ago. Only when the “Heart” is returned will nature once again be in harmony, To achieve her goal, Maoan must sail away

“Merrily We Roll Along”- On Stage at the Wallis - Doesn’t Always Merrily Roll Along
I must begin this review with a confession. I had never seen Stephen Sondheim’s and George Furth’s musical “Merrily We Roll Along,” so I had no idea what the musical was about. Subsequently, my research revealed that it was based on the 1934 play of the same name by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart and that it opened on Broadway on November 16, 1981. Audiences were confused by the story and critics came down heavily on the production. It was a major flop and closed after only sixteen performances. Since its inauspicious opening and rapid closing on Broadway, the show has been worked and reworked many times in attempt to tighten and clarify the story line. Productions have been mounted from off-Broadway, to London’s West End, to the LaJolla Playhouse, but it would appear that there are still inherent flaws within the book. I should add there’s never been a problem with Sondheim’s haunting music or soulful lyrics as evidenced by the fact that he received the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music & Lyrics and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. So it was with virgin eyes that I attended a performance at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts and could understand why the critics were so harsh as it took me quite a while to grasp what was happening on stage. But, thankfully, by about half way through Act 1 it became clearer that this story is an autopsy of the life and times of Franklin (Frank) Shepard, (Aaron Lazar) who abandoned his career as a Broadway musical songwriter with his partner Charley (Wayne Brad) choosing instead to produce Hollywood
10
DesertSTAR
movies. The story is not unraveled in a linear fashion, but goes backwards twenty years in time, illustrating how this once almost impoverished songwriter, becomes an exceedingly wealthy film producer and how he interacted with the people in his life at particular moments in time. Act 1 begins in almost a completely darkened stage. One my one, the ensemble enters and still almost invisible, sing the opening song – “Merrily We Roll Along.” Finally, the stage is lit and we are in Frank’s posh Los Angeles home where a boisterous party is underway celebrating the premiere of his latest film. His oldest friend Mary Flynn (Donna Vivino) is there as is his old writing partner and best friend Charley. Mary is disgusted by the people with whom he has surrounded himself, and is angry that he gave up his musical career to make formulaic films. She has had a bit too much to drink and offers a scathing toast. After she, Frank and his “friends” sing “That Frank” she tells him what she thinks of him and the shallow people in his life. Before storming off in a rage, she and Charley sing the iconic “Old Friends” which is reprised later in the show. The only time Frank gets rattled is when one of his guests tells him that Charley has won a Pulitzer Prize for a play he has written. But there’s more aggravation in store for Frank. His wife Gussie (Saycon Sengbloh) arrives at the party and is furious because she was suppose to get the leading role in her husband’s new film, but instead he cast Meg (Rachael Ferrera) a younger, more beautiful actress. This celebration ends on a rather ugly note as his
BY BEVERLY COHN
wife confronts him on having an affair with Meg. He wants a divorce and Gussie savagely attacks the young ingénue by throwing iodine in her face. The action keeps going back in time with Frank the center of attention. Each era explores the changing relationships of the predominant people in his life. There’s Mary who’s been in love with him from the beginning; Charley, who considers himself to be not only Frank’s writing partner, but also his best friend; Frank’s wife Beth (Whitney Bashor,) and Frank’s other ex-wife Gussie (Saycon Sengbloh.) Other people in and out of Frank’s life include, Joe Josephson (Amir Talai) who goes from being broke all the time, to a big Broadway producer who launches Frank and Charley’s smash hit “Musical Husbands.” Each episode tries to illustrate the events that will take place in the subsequent years but putting all the pieces together could be a bit daunting. The two episodes in the 1950s were particularly interesting as one explores the career struggles of Frank, Charley, and Mary while in 1957, we see the very beginning of their relationships when they initially meet on the rooftop of their apartment building in New York City to watch the historic satellite launch of Sputnik 1, which officially kicks off the space age. It is also the first time Mary hears Frank’s music and falls in love with both him and his music and that’s how it all began. Got it? Director Michael Arden has put together an awardwinning ensemble and directs with the same intensity and creativity as he did in “Spring Awakening” which was also performed at The Wallis. Under his brilliant direction, the production went to New December 7, 2016
York where it received rave reviews. The principals in “Merrily We Roll Along” are seasoned Broadway actors who deliver dazzling musical performances, and do the best they can with the flawed book, which made it difficult for the actors to always connect on an emotional level. Arden keeps the action moving at a brisk pace in Act 1 but Act 2 begins to sag in the middle, which again, is due to the problems inherent in Furth’s book. The production team delivers a creditable look, but I must say that Travis Hagenbuch’s light design resulted in very spotty lighting and the use of the sharp lights aimed at the audience caused people to shield their eyes with their programs. Dane Laffrey’s set design was quite interesting as he filled the stage with ten illuminated make-up tables that created a recognizable theatrical look. His costume design for most of the cast was acceptable except for poor Donna Vivino (Mary) whose outfits were most unflattering – sort of what my mother would describe as “a featherbed tied in the middle.” Other members of the team included Dan Moses Schreier’s excellent sound design and the production’s perfect musical direction by Adam Wachter. Last, but certainly far from the least, is Eamon Foley’s inventive choreography, which was executed by an excellent ensemble which includes: Eric B. Anthony, Sandy Bainum, Melody
Butiu, Doran Butler, Max Chucker, Sarah Daniels, Laura Dickinson, Kevin Patrick Doherty, Jennifer Foster, Travis Leland, Lyle Colby Mackston, Brent Schindele and adorable Maximus Brandon Verso as Frank, Jr. Despite the inherent problems with the book, in closing I’d like to quote that famous New York critic Clive Barnes who wrote, “Whatever you may have heard about it – go and see it for yourselves. It is far too good a musical to be judged by those twin kangaroo courts of word of mouth and critical consensus. So yes, this current production of “Merrily We Roll Along” is a chance to see a musical that is not staged very often and after all, it’s Stephen Sondheim for Pete’s sake and you get to hear such gorgeous songs as “Good Thing Going,” “Our Time” and the very haunting “Not a Day Goes By,” all of which is sung by very gifted performers.

Celtic Women at Fantasy Springs Casino
Celtic Women. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause Fantasy Springs Resort Casino Spa hosted the most amazing Christmas concert with the Celtic Women as the singers for this event. There were four new women in this show that were not here before. Their singing was complimented with a full orchestra that included violins, drums, piano, basses, flute and all the other instruments in an orchestra. The Orchestra started the concert with a medley of Christmas songs to get the audience
in the Christmas spirit. The stage was decked out in Christmas trees, presents and evergreen garland to complete the Christmas scene. The 4 women came on stage, one at a time, to sing the first song. Each woman had a solo song that showed their beautiful singing voices. Some of the songs they sang were Fa La, La Deck the Halls, Merry Christmas, O Holy Night, Santa Clause is coming to town and Ave Maria, to name just a few. The women would tell a bit about the customs in
Mike and Kathleen Hathaway. Photo by Pat Krause their family before some of the songs. They sang a beautiful rendition of, Danny Boy. They sang a few songs in Irish and English where the sound had an Irish lilt and had the audience clapping to the music. Of course, there would not be an Irish song without a Bagpiper. He came out decked in a plaid kilt and high stockings to complete the outfit. He did a solo tune as well. They asked Katrina, the Drummer, to start the song, Let It Snow. The audience sat mesmerized by the beautiful
voices, and the wonderful compositions of favorite Christmas Carol. I noticed several couples with the man having his arms around his lady in a loving gesture that the music inspired. They closed the show by thanking the audience for their support and showing their appreciation after each song. The violinist thanked the audience because this was her first concert performance, and she was thrilled to be here. The song, Auld Lang Syne, was the song where they all came
on stage together and bowed. They sang one more tune before they closed the show. It was a magical Christmas performance and left everyone in the holiday spirit. I am looking forward to more concerts coming up including one of my favorites, Donny and Marie Osmond together on Dec. 17th. Other concerts in Dec. are Espinoza Paz, Dec. 9 and Goo-Goo Dolls, Dec. 10th and a Boxing event on Dec. 16th for the sports fans.

Dead & Company Coming to MGM Grand Garden Arena By Desert Star Staff LAS VEGAS – Dead & Company will kick off its 2017 summer tour at the MGM Grand Garden Arena Saturday, May 27, 2017. The celebrated group’s cross-country run will include a return to many iconic venues such as Fenway Park, Folsom Field and Citi Field, while also adding new venues including Los Angeles’ historic Hollywood Bowl and Chicago’s Wrigley Field to the tour. The returning Dead & Company band, which includes Grateful Dead members Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir; singer/guitarist John Mayer; Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge; and “Fare Thee Well” and RatDog
keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, will perform two sets of music drawing from the Dead’s historic catalog of songs. In October of 2015 the band took to the stage for their inaugural nationwide tour, opening with three sold-out concerts at New York’s legendary Madison Square Garden and ending the year with two sold-out performances at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, California. The group continued their tour in 2016 with multiple night stands at some of the nation’s largest venues, including six stadium dates. Fans and music critics alike hailed the tour: “Dead & Company is the most important music story
of 2016 and maybe beyond.” - The Huffington Post “… Dead & Company cast their rainbow across CU’s sandstoned Folsom Field Sunday, capping a historic two-night stand with a near flawless display.” - Denver Post “… the concerts are magical.” – Billboard “With visibly and audibly fresh energy provided by newcomers John Mayer and Oteil Burbridge, the new model Dead held true to the highly improvised, thrillride style Deadheads hold so dear.” - Oakland Press “OK, I’ll buy it: Dead & Company are for real.” - JamBase “The Grateful Dead’s
catalog is, to a large extent, rocket fuel for guitar pyrotechnics Mayer’s virtuoso skills have re-ignited the flame and fans have seemingly welcomed him as one of their own.” - Gothamist Tickets ranging in price from $50 - $150 (not including applicable service charges) go on sale Friday, Dec. 9, 2016 at 10 a.m. PST and can be purchased online at AXS. com or at any MGM Resorts
International box office. Tickets also can be purchased through the AXS Call Center at 888.929.7849 or MGM Resorts Call Center at 866.740.7711. M life Rewards loyalty members as well as Live Nation and TicketMaster customers will receive access to a pre-sale running Thursday, Dec. 8 from noon to 10 p.m. PST. Report Highlights Outdated HIV Criminalization Laws By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – Today is World AIDS Day and a new report shows that most Americans live in states where outdated laws still can criminalize HIV positive status. New York is one of 38 states with laws that could be used to criminally prosecute people who are HIV positive for potentially exposing another person - regardless of intent and often when there is little or no chance of transmitting the virus. According to Naomi Goldberg, research and policy director at the Movement Advancement Project, these laws do not reflect the reality of HIV today. “States should reform, repeal and/or modernize any of the laws that criminalize the transmission of HIV,” Goldberg said. “They should take into consideration the best available science, the medical evidence and things
like intent and proportionality.” Some state laws specifically criminalize behaviors like spitting that cannot transmit HIV. New York’s laws target sexually transmitted infections in general and could be used to prosecute people who have had sex after being diagnosed as HIV positive. But Goldberg argued that those with other infections are much less likely to be charged with a crime. “It’s only with HIV where people are being prosecuted,” she said. “Exposure to syphilis or exposure to gonorrhea or exposure to another sexually transmitted infection is very rarely prosecuted, which is problematic.” Rather than stemming the spread of HIV, Goldberg said evidence is mounting that criminal prosecutions discourage people from getting tested. And she added that HIV criminalization laws are based
More than 80 percent of LGBT people live in states with laws that criminalize HIV status. (Geralt/ Pixabay) on the fear and stigma of 30 years ago, but advances in antiretroviral therapies and the development of pre-exposure prophylaxis have reduced the threat significantly. “HIV is no longer a death
sentence,” she said. “We have life expectancies for people who are diagnosed and are on ART that are comparable to individuals without HIV.” A bill introduced in Congress, called the Repeal
HIV Discrimination Act, would encourage states to modernize their laws, and would update federal laws and policies to be in line with modern science.
Columbus was diagnosed with HIV two years ago. He said his medication regimen keeps his viral loads so low that the virus actually is undetectable in his body. While it’s important to build awareness on World AIDS Day, Hetzer said for him it’s also a day of thanksgiving. “I am very grateful for the continued efforts in research, and those dedicated to help finding a cure,” he said. “I’ve been blessed with a great family and friend network. They’ve been able to show me that love knows no status and I’ve been able to really overcome the stigma and
judgment that surrounds it.” Thanks to treatment, Hetzer said he has a life expectancy is comparable to someone without the virus - a particularly noteworthy prognosis when compared to the early years of the epidemic. Those infected with HIV in the 1980s were given an average life expectancy of six months to a year. Around Ohio, community and service provider programs - including Equitas Health are available to help people connect with HIV testing sites, treatment providers, support groups and other resources.

World AIDS Day Highlights Testing, Treatment, Prevention About 22,000 Ohioans are currently living with HIV.
By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio — This year marks the 35th anniversary of the first detection of HIV. And while research has changed the outcomes for those living with HIV, experts say there is much more work to do. Today is World AIDS Day, an annual observance to support people living with HIV, remember those who have died from the virus and encourage others to get tested. The sooner someone knows they have the virus,
the sooner they can begin treatment, said Dr. Michael Para, medical director of Equitas Health and associate dean of clinical research at the Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health. He said research also suggests that the use of treatment as a preventative measure can disrupt the spread of the virus. “It really looks very convincing that by treating the person with HIV and getting their viral load down to zero, the chance of transmission
is extraordinarily lower,” Para said. “So now we truly believe that by treating people, we actually will prevent infections.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported an estimated 1.2 million Americans are currently infected with HIV, but one in eight don’t know they have it. According to state data, there were 950 new HIV diagnoses in Ohio in 2014, and there are about 22,000 Ohioans currently living with HIV. Christopher Hetzer of
New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthier You By Desert Star Staff New Year’s resolutions can be a double-edged sword. While many of us feel inspired to make goals to improve our health, happiness and wellbeing, we often find the changes hard to sustain, and sometimes end up reverting back to old practices. Check out these tips for starting and maintaining a healthier lifestyle. Baby Steps: Many people start a new year hoping to improve their fitness routines and eating habits, and quickly become discouraged when results aren’t immediate. Instead of cancelling your new gym membership and opting for a box of chocolates by Valentine’s Day, set achievable and realistic goals to stay on track. If losing weight is the objective, aim for 10 pounds instead of 50. If you succeed www.desertstarweekly.com
at losing the first 10, celebrate and make a new goal. Instead of adopting an extreme diet, cut back on one snack a day or incorporate a smoothie as a healthy meal replacement. Use ingredients like fresh fruit, dark leafy greens, flax or chia seeds -- even savory vegetables like beets -- the possibilities are endless. Fuel Up to Get Fit: Sticking to fitness goals takes the right fuel. Eating whole foods instead of processed foods will give you more and longer-lasting energy. Plus, a whole-food diet is more simple and sustainable than restrictive calorie counting or elimination diets. Powering your body with snacks like low-fat yogurt topped with granola, fresh hummus and whole-grain pita, or an apple and peanut butter, will carry your body through a workout and help
you feel fuller longer. To make delicious homemade nut butter, throw three cups of roasted, unsalted peanuts or cashews into a high-powered blender like a Vitamix machine and blend for a minute or so. The result is a gooey, good-for-you treat that will provide ample energy for healthy pursuits. While grocery shopping, stick to the outer perimeter of the store and pick up nutrient-rich and versatile ingredients like avocados, chickpeas, bananas, nuts and spinach, that can stand alone or be mixed into everything from healthy salads to frozen desserts. Indulge Your Sweet Tooth: Being healthy and eating whole foods doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your sweet tooth. Before you plunge into a tub of cookie dough, consider other ways to curb cravings. discounted tickets. • Passengers who use oxygen equipment can bring the equipment onboard trains with certain restrictions. Hotels: Look for a “guaranteed ADA” room when booking. • Check the room for any barriers at checkin. A room can be ADA compliant but that does not mean that there will not be any mobility barriers. • If you have difficulty pushing a manual chair, request a room near the elevators or on the first floor. Ground Transportation: Search for taxi or rental companies with wheelchair accessible vehicles. Desert AIDS Project Opens New Hepatitis Center
By KMIR News Staff PALM SPRINGS, Ca. -Doors were open Tuesday for a new hepatitis clinic at Palm Springs’ Desert AIDS Project campus, intended to address what officials say is a growing local need for testing and treatment of Hepatitis C. The Hepatitis Center of Excellence, a collaboration between Desert AIDS Project and Desert Oasis Healthcare, will offer ``non-invasive diagnostic testing and staging, improved access to curative treatments, and compassionate support for the many complex issues associated with a Hepatitis diagnosis,’’ according to Desert AIDS Project. Treatment and testing for Hepatitis C, an infectious liver disease that can lead to cancer, will be the main
focus of the clinic. According to Desert AIDS Project, an estimated 4,000 Coachella Valley residents currently live with chronic HCV, though further testing in the region would be needed to determine just how prevalent the disease is locally. The Centers for Disease Control estimates up to 3.9 million people are living with chronic HCV infection in the United States. ``The number of people in the U.S. living with HCV is about triple the number living with HIV. Approximately 20 percent of D.A.P.’s HIV patients are co-infected with HCV,’’ said David Brinkman, CEO of Desert AIDS Project. Officials urged people to get tested, even if they don’t exhibit obvious symptoms.
``If people wait until they have symptoms of HCV, it’s too late,’’ said Dr. Shubha Kerkar, director of infectious diseases at Desert Regional Medical Center. ``We’re now seeing patients in their sixties, seventies, and eighties with HCV, and it seems to be just the tip of the iceberg. Stage 4 Hepatitis is irreversible. We need to find people at stages zero, one, two and three.’’ According to the CDC, Hepatitis C can be transmitted through injection drug use, needlestick injuries in healthcare settings and birth from an HCV- infected mother. Less frequent means of transmission include sex with an HCV- infected person and sharing personal items with infected blood. No vaccine for Hepatitis
C is available, though officials say research into its development is underway. ``While the symptoms of HIV can take up to 10 years to appear, a person can
have Hepatitis C for many decades without symptoms. As with HIV, the only way to know if you have Hepatitis C is to get tested,’’ said Brinkman. Source KMIR
occurring less than half an hour apart in the desert east of the Coachella Valley. The first crash happened at 4:02 a.m. on eastbound
Interstate 10, west of Eagle Mountain Road, where a vehicle overturned on the right shoulder, injuring six people, according to the Riverside County Fire Department’s April Newman. One person was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries, while the other five victims suffered moderate injuries. At 4:25 a.m., another crash occurred around 20 miles east of the first crash, on eastbound Interstate 10, east of Ford Dry Lake. A vehicle went off the roadway, trapping three people inside the car, Newman said. Fire crews extricated all three people over the next two hours. Two of the victims sustained major injuries and were airlifted to hospitals, forcing a shutdown of Interstate
10 in both directions so that two helicopters could land on the freeway to transport the patients, Newman said. The third victim was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries. The crashes followed three other crashes that occurred on Interstate 10 in the desert over the weekend. Just after 5 a.m. Saturday, a big rig truck overturned on Interstate 10 near the Cactus City Rest Area, killing both of the truck’s occupants. Raleigh Guillory, 42, of Marksville, Louisiana, and Sean Burke, 49, of Gulfport, Missouri, died at the scene of the crash. On Sunday, five people were injured in two crashes that occurred just a few miles apart from each other. At 7:26 a.m. Sunday, two
people were injured when their vehicle hit a guard rail on westbound Interstate 10 at Rice Road, trapping one of the occupants in the wreckage, Newman said. One patient was airlifted to a hospital with moderate injuries, while the other was taken by ground ambulance to a hospital with minor injuries. At 11:24 a.m. Sunday, an overturned vehicle injured three, including a child who suffered critical injuries, at eastbound Interstate 10, east of Eagle Mountain Road. The injured child had to be cut out of the vehicle by firefighters and was airlifted to a hospital, according to Newman. The other two victims were taken to a hospital with moderate and minor injuries. Source KMIR

Report Shows Billions in Raises for Workers Over 4 Years
By Desert Star Staff HARRISBURG, Pa. – As thousands of low-wage workers staged strikes and protests in cities across the country, a new report shows the fight for a $15 minimum wage is making a difference. Tuesday’s job actions in more than 320 cities nationwide marked the fourth anniversary of the first Fight for 15 strike by fast-food workers in New York. According to Yannet Lathrop, researcher and policy analyst at the National Employment Law Project, their report shows that the movement has had an impact, raising wages for millions across the country. “Since the Fight for $15 started, 19 million workers have benefited from this, and the total raise that workers have received is over $61 billion so far,” she said. Still, 43 percent of U.S. workers are earning less than $15 an hour. Opponents of raising the minimum wage say it will cause job losses, and hurt small businesses.

Since the Fight for $15 began, 19 million workers have won raises totaling $61.5 billion. (Fibonacci Blue/Flickr) But Lathrop noted that in Seattle, which has begun phasing in a $15 minimum wage, there has been job growth in the restaurant industry, the employment sector most affected by the increase. “We also saw lower
unemployment rates compared to the state as a whole, so overall the indication is that the $15 minimum wage has not really caused a catastrophe as predicted by opponents,” she explained. At least 20 cities and
dozens of large companies have raised their minimum wages since 2012. New York and California have passed $15 minimum-wage laws and voters in four states approved raising their minimums in this month’s election.
Alarming Survey Shows People’s Poor Home Maintenance Habits
Protect your family from the unthinkable with simple home maintenance projects. By Desert Star Staff Proper home maintenance can preserve your home, while saving you money and headaches in the future. However, a new survey from Erie Insurance conducted by Harris Poll reveals Americans have alarmingly poor upkeep habits. “By overlooking common DIY projects, homeowners are not only putting themselves at risk for major financial loss, but also are exposing their families to dangerous hazards,” says Joe Vahey, vice president and product manager at Erie Insurance. In an effort to help people become more aware of what they can be doing to protect themselves, the experts at Erie Insurance list five commonly overlooked areas of the

home that should be regularly inspected and maintained: Inspect Your Roof: Replacing or repairing a roof is one of the biggest expenses a homeowner may have and the need to do it often comes without warning. Nationally, the average homeowner spends about $6,600 to install a new roof, according to HomeAdvisor, but prices can soar upwards of $20,000 depending on certain factors. But the Erie Insurance survey found that nearly one in four homeowners (23 percent) admits they never inspect their roof or have it inspected only if there is a problem. Even scarier, nearly a third (27 percent) of those who own a house either mistakenly believe their insurance will pay for damage
that occurs to their roof over time, such as through normal wear and tear or have no idea how their insurance works regarding this type of damage. Insurance generally only covers things like roof damage from unexpected storms. Unclog Gutters and Downspouts: Nearly one out of four homeowners (24 percent) say they never care for their gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters can cause water to flow down the sides of a home and pool around its foundation, often leading to major issues like uneven floors, cracks in walls and interior water damage. This type of claim, also known as seepage, is often not covered under your home insurance policy. Clean Out Dryer Exhaust: One in five homeowners (21 December 7, 2016
percent) admit they never clean their clothes dryer ducts, unless they have a problem. Unfortunately, the most common cause of dryer fires is failure to do a thorough cleaning. According to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), dryers cause roughly 15,500 home structure fires, 29 deaths, 400 injuries and $192 million in direct property loss each year. Check the Furnace: Only 36 percent of homeowners have their furnaces inspected and serviced at least once a year. According to NFPA, U.S. fire departments respond to an estimated average of 56,000 home fires involving heating equipment. These fires resulted in annual losses of 470 civilian deaths, 1,490 civilian injuries, and $1 billion in direct property damage per year. Clean Sump Pump and Pit: Sump pumps are used to remove excess water from homes, but 44 percent of those who own one admit to never cleaning it or the pit, unless they have a problem. Water damage due to sewage and drain backups generally requires additional insurance coverage beyond a standard policy. Without that coverage, it could end up costing you, on average, $2,156, according to Home Advisor. Protect your family and your investment with proper maintenance, and if you’re unsure what your policy covers, contact your insurance agent. They’ll work with you to determine what you need to be protected.

Grab Your Fast And Go Healthy This New Year!
By Desert Star Staff Too much holiday cheer? Fatty foods, sweet treats, alcoholic drinks? Fear not! The New Year is your chance to hit the reset button and go healthy. One way to do that is to try a fast. “You can lose at least a pound a day, get rid of foggy brain, and recharge your energy,” says best-selling author and nutritionist Cherie Calbom, known as “The Juice Lady” for her expertise in juicing for health and detoxification (www.juiceladycherie.com). “Fasting is a great way to restart your metabolism, purify your lymphatic system, and revive your soul” says Calbom, author of the new book The Juice Lady’s Guide to Fasting. “It’s also a way to look younger, clear out the toxins, and restart the systems in your body for optimal health and physical well-being, and to bring restoration to your mind, body and spirit.” People often think of fasting as a fad, she says, but it’s been touted throughout history – by the healer Hippocrates, the philosopher Plato, and scientist and statesman Benjamin Franklin, just to name a few. Germany’s famous “fasting therapist,” Otto Buchinger Sr., M.D., called it an “operation without surgery.” Even those who don’t believe in fasting’s curative powers agree it can help prevent illness. Want to fend off the flu, a cold or bronchitis? Fasting gives your
immune system a boost. “It’s a lot like a threefold spring cleaning, as you dive deep into the areas in your life that don’t always get the attention they need – mentally, physically and spiritually – and you clean them up,” Calbom says. “You rid yourself of toxic influences that hinder growth, clarity and well-being, and refocus on the future.” With a liquid fast, you give up solid foods, and enjoy delicious, nutrientrich beverages. In her book, Calbom provides a variety of fasts to choose from including the smoothie fast, bone-broth fast, 3-day detox fast, and what she says is the most popular of all — the juice fast. If you crave crunch, she offers the Garden of Eden Fast and the Daniel Fast. “There’s something for everyone — from a short weekend weight loss fast to a 21-day rejuvenation fast,” she says. If you’re a list maker (and who isn’t this time of year?), Calbom recommends writing down what you hope to achieve with your fast – losing belly fat, cleansing your liver or boosting your brain power, with brains detox juices for example – in order to find a fast that’s a good fit. If you aren’t sure you can hack a liquid fast because you’ll crave flavor, think again. Here are three of Calbom’s favorite recipes, designed to taste great while doing good:
