Santa Arrived Early
Royal Emerald Pharmaceuticals team members after unloading the truck load of food at Food Now.
$5,000 and a truck load of food By Desert Star Staff Desert Hot Springs, CA - Santa Claus and his elves arrived early at Food Now. Royal Emerald Pharmaceuticals CEO Mark Crozier delivered a surprise
check for $5,000 along with a truck load of highquality foods to the food bank on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020. “We want to make sure that every family in town has enough food for
Christmas,” Crozier said. Food Now Executive Director Dana Johnson said that he was blown away by the company’s generosity. Crozier previously donated $10,000 for Thanksgiving and his employees participated in a food drive at Grocery Outlet Bargain Market in early
November to collect canned goods and other items to accompany a turkey dinner. “Because of Royal Emerald, we had the best Thanksgiving ever. In the past, we had fist fights break out in the lobby because we didn’t have enough turkeys to hand out. We had to
institute a lottery system to decide who got turkeys and who didn’t. Everything is different now that Royal Emerald has come to town.” Food Now generally feeds 300 families on a regular basis, but due to Continues on Page 7

By Desert Star Staff There’s almost nothing better than keeping warm and cozy on cold winter days. One thing that can help make
staying indoors more enjoyable is delicious, warm, perfectly baked food. Casseroles are hearty options for cold, brisk winter days with mixed
ingredients baked in a hot oven and served in large scoops. This Creamy Macaroni and Cheese Casserole is a twist on a childhood favorite (adult-approved, too). Adding a hint of seasoning, like dry mustard and onion powder, and making the cheese sauce
with dairy and lots of shredded cheeses gives it just the right amount of flavor and kick. This recipe is fairly simple, and kids will devour it in seconds. It’s creamy, cheesy and rich with ingredients that combine to create one spectacularly cozy comfort
food. It’s baked to meld all those wonderful ingredients into one large masterpiece. Start by following the package instructions to cook your noodles. Then melt butter, whisk in flour and stir. Next add your dairy and seasonings. Then it’s time for cheese. Combine the noodles and cheese sauce then bake. It only requires a few steps, with one cooking pot and one baking pan, and it’s guaranteed deliciousness. Next time your family is stuck at home, try this recipe and see the smiles appear on your little ones’ faces as they gobble down every bite. It’s almost impossible to resist a recipe with 4 cups of shredded cheddar cheese and 1 cup of shredded Parmesan cheese. It’s what makes this recipe so gooey and delectable. So when the wind is howling and there is snow on the ground, don’t fret about making a filling and satisfying dinner. This Creamy Macaroni and Cheese Casserole has you and your family covered. Army Corps Hears Arguments For, Against Line 5 Tunnel Permit
A dozen organizations are calling on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to reject plans to construct an oil-pipeline tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac. An online hearing was held Monday on Enbridge’s permit application for the tunnel, which would replace the existing Line 5 pipelines. This comes as Enbridge challenges the legality of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s recent decision to revoke
its operational agreement for Line 5. Liz Kirkwood, executive director at For the Love of Water, a law and policy center, said this is the moment for Michigan to become a leader in protecting its most precious resource - the Great Lakes. “We, for the first time, are witnessing our state leaders defending our waters over private interests,” Kirkwood said. “It’s a defining moment for citizens and
indigenous peoples of this state and of this region.” Those opposing the construction question the safety of the tunnel project, noting its potential impacts on drinking water, fishing, treaty rights and the environment. The Army Corps is accepting written public comments on the Line 5 permit application through December 17. Last week, Enbridge asked a U.S. District Judge for a 30-day delay of a
December 15 court deadline to argue its case against the governor’s order to shut down Line 5 by May. A spokesman said the company is defending its right to operate the pipeline. Kirkwood countered that each day that passes puts the Great Lakes at risk of disaster. “It’s a race against time. And delay is a tactic that favors Enridge, because it gets to continue its ongoing operation,” she said. “This
is a very lucrative pipeline, but delay is extremely dangerous for the Great Lakes and its health.” As for the tunnel, the Army Corps must decide whether the permit application should be subjected to a full federal review that could include looking at other alternatives, including existing oil pipelines within the company’s system.

The Economic Outlook for the Coming Year 2021
By Janice Gough The Covid 19 virus made a significant impact on the world economy. Global markets crashed, companies closed, and many closed permanently, jobs disappeared, and massive government stimulus packages were enacted. Although the pandemic brought global economies to their knees, at least the U.S. economy bouncing back for the rest of this year is mainly due to government stimulus. Trillions of dollars of stimulus money have been pumped into the global economy, but because most of it was used to

prop up people and businesses hurt by the pandemic, the threat of this money surge to cause higher inflation is low. Due to the pandemic, companies will prioritize stability over profitability by rerouting supply chains, moving production inside their home countries and building healthier balance sheets. The pandemic has altered economic growth trajectories and highlighted flaws in the capitalist financial system itself. Specifically, it has forced companies to focus more on stakeholders, employees, customers, and community than shareholders. But change is happening, and every large company is thinking about its obligations to create a more diverse workforce, to invest back in the community, that we all have a stake in making sure society succeeds broadly. It’s not a ‘winner- take all environment”. This change also means a powerful dynamic for stakeholders shifts, which has not been appreciated by the market yet. U.S. equities are forecast to grow at a fiveyear annualized rate of 4.7% versus 10.8% in the last five years. Don’t expect much more for 2020. Now we must plan for 2021. Globalization is taking a step backward from what is optimal. A significant change has been that Former
President Donald Trump had a mercantilist policy focused on the strength of the export sector, the domestic economy’s strength, versus really thinking about the leadership role the U.S. has played historically. There is an ongoing risk of a trade war with China, which will not disappear anytime soon. This means that market volatility will continue. The U.S. and China will have to learn to live on the same planet with their opposing views on economic policy. Collaboration may not be possible and will lead to inefficiencies. That means the United States will have to cut its reliance on products from China. But U.S. strength in technology and biotechnology should shield it from the downside this will cause.
Ultimately, there will be less growth to go around, but there is no forecast of a recession; as a result of this, it will slow things down as additional frictions get created as part of this adjustment process. We will see new supply chains opening, which are the companies moving from China to Malaysia or Vietnam, which is already is in progress. The critical point is that a slowdown of global economic growth is happening. Technology may help with growth, but even that is being threatened with potential new regulations. Some of these global technology companies are getting so big and massive that they are challenging government and fair competition. This challenge leads to a reaction
that will probably slow things down. Technology is going to be a political issue in 2021, which is pro-business versus privacy issues. The consumer and the experience of COVID-19 will not disappear for a long time. U.S. Growth was 2.6% this year, and it could be dropping to 1.7% over the next five years; it is positive, however. Requests for HOA Information Part 2
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Kelly, I attended my first HOA meeting and I noticed that the format is slightly different from city council meetings. Board members were provided a lengthy document prepared by management, containing specific details on water usage, maintenance requests, and detailed financials. I queried if the report was available, and was told no, they are only provided to board members. In city council meetings, documents that don’t violate confidentiality or executive session privilege must be made available for review in advance of the meeting. Does the Davis-Stirling Act require something similar? Sincerely, D. R., Ventura
its meeting, may contain documents that are included in the list, but the board packet itself is not a document which is required to be shared with all members. HOAs, even the largest ones, do not have the same resources as cities, and the requirements of the DavisStirling Act on community associations are not as strict as the Government Code requirements applicable to public agencies. Board packets can be anywhere from 20-100 pages for most HOA board meetings, so the cost of distributing them would be prohibitive. Furthermore, the audience doesn’t need the board packet in advance, since the board and not the audience is deliberating. However, documents may be identified during the deliberations that are “Association records” which you can later request to see. Thanks, Kelly
Dear D.R.: Civil Code Section 5200 includes a long list of “association records” which HOAs must produce upon member request. A typical board meeting packet, prepared by the manager to inform the board prior to

Dear P.R.: The approved minutes or draft minutes, must be available to members within 30 days of an open board meeting, per Civil Code Section 4950. The statute does not require that minutes or draft minutes be published to all members, but many HOAs post minutes on their web sites for all members to see. If a member requests copies and reimburses the HOA for the cost, minutes or draft minutes must be provided. If they are not provided, a member may file a small claims court claim under Civil Code Section 5235. Court action should only be taken as a very last resort, but the HOA should be reminded of these statutes. Best regards, Kelly
Dear R.K.: While Civil Code Section 5200(a) (4) provides that executed contracts may be inspected by members, there is an exception for privileged contracts. Attorney fee agreements are specifically designated by Business and Professions Code as “confidential” documents. I have not encountered any other form of contract which is designated as “privileged,” so members should be able to review all other executed contracts. Sincerely, Kelly

Disability Groups Watch SCOTUS Case Challenging Affordable Care Act
By Desert Star Staff Advocates for people with disabilities are keeping a close eye on the U.S. Supreme Court as it considers a case calling for the elimination of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). If the court strikes down the health law, 20 million Americans, including at least 600,000 Coloradans, are projected to lose coverage. Julie Reiskin, executive director for the Colorado CrossDisability Coalition believes everyone should have access to affordable health care, but said people with disabilities are the canaries in the coal mine of the health industry. “A health-care system that works for us will work for everyone,” Reiskin asserted. “Because we have longterm care needs, we often have complicated medication regimens. But when it doesn’t work, it kills us first.”

Some 19 disability-rights organizations filed an amicus brief highlighting the ACA’s critical health-care protections. The law protects people with pre-existing conditions from being denied coverage, and guarantees coverage of services for mental and developmental disabilities. When Colorado expanded Medicaid under the ACA, the state also allowed people with disabilities to buy into Medicaid coverage, a move Reiskin said has made it possible for many to escape poverty. If the law is struck down, Reiskin worries Coloradans would lose supports not covered by most private insurers, such as decent wheelchairs or help to shower in the morning, which make it possible to be independent and contribute fully to society. “People might not be able to get the care they need to get out of bed,” Reiskin worried.
Nineteen advocacy groups filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court urging the Affordable Care Act be upheld, arguing it “uniquely and extensively benefits people with disabilities.” (Mark Thomas/Pixabay) “We’d lose those liberties that other people take for granted. Now, even with the Medicaid buy-in, we still have a huge gap in employment and income, a lot of disparities, but at least we have a chance.” The Supreme Court heard December 9, 2020
oral arguments last month in a case brought by Texas and other states claiming the entire Affordable Care Act should be thrown out because Congress rendered a section of the law unconstitutional when it removed a penalty for people who did
not buy health insurance. A decision is expected from the high court in the spring. Disclosure: Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition contributes to our fund for reporting on Census, Civic Engagement, and Disabilities. www.desertstarweekly.com

‘Christmas Chronicles 2’ Arrives in the St. Nick of Time When it comes to excellent Christmas movies, you can’t beat Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life,” starring James Stewart as George Bailey. It was first released in 1947, and over time it has become a holiday tradition on TV. When I was young, my family and I watched this heartwarming film religiously every year. This year, due to the Coronavirus, the holidays won’t be quite the same. Sadly we can’t venture out to do our Christmas shopping. Instead, we have to shop online and let FedEx, UPS, and the post office make our very special deliveries. As Scrooge would say, “Bah, humbug!” But wait--all is not lost--we can still watch holiday movies on TV with our family. A real charmer for young and old alike is “A Christmas Story,” starring Darren McGavin as the dad and Peter Billingsley as Ralphie, a little boy who desperately wants a BB gun for Christmas. Unfortunately, his mom is certain he would shoot his eye out and says no. But will Santa come through?
Check TV listings for Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” There are quite a few to choose from. In 2009 Jim Carrey played Scrooge, and there’s even a Muppet movie version that’s a lot of fun. Other holiday films to look for on TV include: “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “White Christmas” starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney, “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Elf” with Will Ferrell and Bob Newhart, “Miracle on 34th Street” starring a very young Natalie Wood, “Bad Santa” with Billy Bob Thornton and National Lampoon’s “Christmas Vacation.” And this year on Netflix, it’s “The Christmas Chronicles 2,” directed by Chris Columbus. Kurt Russell stars as Santa, and Goldie Hawn is Mrs. Claus. The story begins as Kate (Darby Camp) goes to Cancun with her mother, brother, mom’s gentleman friend, and young son Jack (Jazir Bruno). Still grieving over her father’s
death, Kate is depressed by the thought that her mother might remarry and replace her dad. Upset, she heads off to town, followed by Jack. En route, she is offered a ride by one of Santa’s elves, Belsnickel (Julian Dennison). Unnoticed, Jack hops aboard behind Kate, and in the blink of an eye, the elf whisks them off to the North
Pole. Luckily they are rescued by Santa in the nick of time. Belsnikel, once Santa’s favorite, has decided to take over the North Pole. Will he be successful? At one point in the story, Santa and Kate are chased back in time by Belsnikel. It’s now 1990, not 2020, and they are stranded in Logan
Airport. Everyone is angry because all flights have been canceled. Even Santa’s reindeer can’t fly due to the negativity all around them. Then Kate bumps into a 13-year-old boy who will become a meaningful part of her life in the future. The Christmas Chronicles” from Netflix is rated PG and has a running time of 115 minutes.
CA Education Advocates Press for Changes Under Biden Administration
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calf. -- With the prospect of a new Biden administration on the horizon, California groups that advocate for education reform are hoping for big changes in 2021. Ed Honowitz is a former Pasadena school-board member who now runs the California Labor Management
Initiative for the nonprofit Californians Dedicated to Education. Honowitz thinks the first priority should be aid to the states, which have lost billions during the pandemic. “Certainly some support for states, so that school districts have adequate PPE and staff for cleaning, for substitute teachers,” Honowitz said. Much depends on an
election outcome far from California -- the U.S. Senate runoff in Georgia in early January, which could flip the Senate to Democratic control. President-elect Biden, whose wife Jill is a community college professor, has called for two years of free community college and four years of free tuition at state universities for low-income families. In
addition, he’s said he wants to cancel some student debt and institute universal kindergarten. Honowitz said he’d like to see the Department of Education revive civil rights and equity issues that got some traction under President Barack Obama, but have either been sidetracked or scuttled over the past four years. “There’s a lot of things
that got eliminated under Trump -- things like addressing suspension and expulsion disparities, social-emotional learning, school-based mental health,” he said. Honowitz also believes workers’ rights have been eroded in the last few years, and said he expects Biden to pursue a more collaborative approach to labor-management issues.
WI Lawmaker Joins Nonpartisan Push for Climate-Change Action
By Desert Star Staff RACINE, Wis. -- A Wisconsin lawmaker is part of a network of state and local elected officials calling for serious action on climate change, right away. The nonpartisan group Elected Officials to Protect America said it’s pleased that President-elect Joe Biden plans to rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement, but it’s also asking Biden and Congress to produce a national Climate Emergency Plan. Rep. Greta Neubauer, D-Racine, said it’s evident in her district broader steps need to be taken, and soon. “My community, which is facing eroding shorelines along Lake Michigan, poor air quality, high unemployment, deep racial disparities, severe storms and weather, and now www.desertstarweekly.com
COVID-19, cannot wait any longer,” Neubauer insisted. While some members think Biden’s own climate plan doesn’t go as far enough, the elected leaders said it’s a good blueprint. Climate change is often associated with progressives, but Neubauer pointed to national polling, including from the Pew Research Center, suggesting most Americans want government action on the issue. This coming Saturday, Dec. 12, is the fifth anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement. Neubauer noted in Wisconsin, there’s acknowledgement, even in more conservative rural areas, that change is needed, as farmers openly discuss the effects of a warming climate on their operations.
She said it’s come up when pushing for new policies at the state level. “We had farmers coming in saying, ‘Our time for harvesting is unpredictable, and we need some shifts,’” Neubauer observed. The coalition issued a letter signed by more than 125 elected officials demanding action, including a major reduction in the use of fossil fuels. To reduce greenhousegas emissions, Biden’s plan focuses on heavy investment in public transportation and making buildings more energy efficient. He’s also made pledges to end fossilfuel subsidies, but that idea faces strong opposition, including from some moderate Democrats. December 9, 2020

Latinos Face ‘Completion Gap’ to Earning College Degree
A new study finds Latino students who enroll in college face a “completion gap” compared to other ethnic groups in earning a degree. (mdurson/Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff While the number of Latinos entering college in Arizona and across America is increasing, new research shows many lag behind in completing
their studies compared to other student groups. A report from Unidos U.S. and the University of North Carolina found an aversion to debt is the main reason for
the completion gap between Latinos and students of other ethnic groups. But Deborah Santiago, CEO at Excelencia in Education, said the study found Latinos who enroll in
community and four-year colleges also face significant cultural and financial obstacles to earning a degree. “There are a lot of institutional barriers, or opportunities for institutions to change the way that they serve this population, rather than expecting that it’s the students themselves that need to change in order to meet the goals that we have,” Santiago said. The study found a high percentage of Latinos entering college are the first in their family to enroll - and in addition to financial pressures, often feel an obligation to help support their families. Santiago said nationally, 22% of Latino students who enroll in college complete their education, compared to 46% for non-Latino Americans. “Too often I hear this expression that, ‘It’s our culture that creates a barrier,’” she said. “The assumption is that there’s an either/or - that we forgo our families to serve
our own needs and success, rather than it’s the family unit that’s engaged in the educational experience.” Latinos surveyed listed the main reasons for not graduating as: they ran out of money to finish college, could not take on more debt, had a sudden change in finances or returned to work to support their family. “There are some signs there that we have to prioritize, to the extent that we’re having to choose between education and economic sustainability for our family, those are hard choices public policy and institutions of higher education have a role in trying to address,” Santiago said. The report recommends colleges adopt programs to assist Latino students in navigating the financial landscape and adjusting to the academic and social challenges they’ll face in completing their studies.

Groups Question Effectiveness of CA Cap-and-Trade Program Part 3 Read Part 2 of this story in last weeks edition.
By Julia Rosen The Money By the time California’s cap-and-trade program came up for renewal in 2017, environmental justice advocates had united against it. They felt ignored by state officials and abandoned by mainstream environmental groups. The final reauthorization bill, which extended the program until 2030, only compounded their sense of betrayal: among other provisions, it exempted many polluting facilities from additional regulation by local air districts. This souring of relationships was particularly ironic given that many saw California’s original climate law as an explicit effort to advance environmental justice. It was “integral to the design,” says Michel Gelobter, a social entrepreneur and environmental justice advocate who helped shape the bill when he was the executive director of Redefining Progress, a sustainability think tank. The law directed state officials to consider the impacts of climate policies on “communities that are already adversely impacted by air pollution.” It also mandated that the state convene an Environmental Justice Advisory Committee to oversee its climate efforts. Even the capand-trade program, while far from perfect, had equitable ambitions, Gelobter says. He and other economists note that traditional environmental regulations often raise the cost of goods and services, which

disproportionately harms low-income people. And the extra money that consumers pay goes into the pockets of polluters, Gelobter says. Thus, to him, the most just climate policies are those that impose a price on carbon and use the revenue to blunt the economic blow on the most vulnerable members of society. And California has done exactly that. Every quarter, the state auctions off emissions allowances to polluters (some are also distributed directly to industries) and by law, 35% of the money raised must be spent in disadvantaged communities. In practice, however, the state has delegated far more, almost 60%, or roughly $3 billion in total since the first funds were released in 2014. Phil Serna, a member of the California Air Resources Board, sees this as a powerful counterpoint to critiques that cap-and-trade is unjust. “How we invest our resources is really a reflection of our priorities,” says Serna, who is also a Sacramento County Supervisor. Some cap-and-trade revenue goes directly to California residents, to offset the increased cost of electricity and natural gas caused by the state’s climate initiatives. The rest of the money goes toward projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions or improve water quality. In disadvantaged neighborhoods, that might mean expanding public transit, increasing access to renewable energy, and building efficient, affordable housing. Some feel uncomfortable about the source of these funds, since they often come
at a cost to community health. “We would prefer it if there was no money coming from the cap-and-trade system because there was no pollution coming from our economy,” says Alvaro Sanchez, director of environmental equity at the nonprofit Greenlining Institute. But from an investment point of view, he says, “the money picture feels fairly positive.” In the San Joaquin Valley, cap-and-trade funds have helped low-income residents purchase clean cars. Most of the valley ranks in the upper third of CalEnviroScreen scores. And the region has the worst air quality in the nation; Bakersfield leads the country in particulate pollution, and Fresno ranks second. But here, the leading culprits are agriculture and traffic-not the large industrial facilities covered under cap-andtrade. (The program regulates transportation indirectly by December 9, 2020
forcing fuel distributors to purchase emission allowances.) Under an initiative called Drive Clean in the San Joaquin, residents can get up to $9,500 to trade in their old car for a hybrid or electric vehicle. So far, Drive Clean has replaced 3,000 cars and saved customers hundreds of dollars a month in gas and maintenance costs, says Tom Knox, the executive director of Valley Clean Air Now, which runs the program. One of those vehicles went to Sokunrith Nop, who emigrated to the U.S. from Cambodia 41 years ago and
now lives in Stockton. He replaced his 1995 Honda Civic with a fully electric 2017 Fiat 500e. “I love it. It suits me perfectly,” says Nop, who needed something reliable to drive his child to school. He likes saving money on gas. And he wants to help the environment. “Everybody should drive a car like that where we don’t pollute,” Nop says. He only wishes the program could help more people like him. “Those cars are expensive.” Read Part 4 of this story in next weeks edition.

Cash Assistance Goes to Fewer Low-Income Families
By Desert Star Staff The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or TANF, program is reaching fewer families in poverty than earlier federal assistance programs, according to a new study spanning two decades. More folks are turning to TANF for relief during the pandemic, but Black households that have been hit hardest by COVID-19 are having more problems accessing the program, the report finds. Ife Floyd, senior policy analyst at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, which released the report, said the reasons for reduced access over the years include strict work requirements and very low income levels to apply. “And the benefits are so low that, when a person starts working, they could easily become ineligible from their earnings, even though they may not be out of poverty
from their earnings,” Floyd said. “That limits a lot of the access to the program.” She pointed out TANF benefits vary by state, and Maryland’s monthly amount of $725 is relatively high compared to the rest of the nation. But in 2019, only 17,000 Maryland families received TANF benefits, out of 70,000 families who live in poverty. Floyd said federal programs offering cash assistance to families with children in poverty have historically discriminated against Black parents, providing lower benefits in states with higher numbers of Black children. She added racial stereotypes have long undermined federal support. “There were these stereotypes - that’s this idea of the ‘welfare queen’ - that Black women are somehow very lazy and are just taking advantage
A new report says families’ access to the federal cash assistance program known as TANF has been limited by policies rooted in racism. (Adobe Stock) of government assistance in order to not work,” she said. “But Black women have always had higher work rates than white women.”
The report recommends policymakers loosen some of TANF’s harsher restrictions - not cutting a family off, for instance, if one qualification
isn’t met. Floyd also noted the federal grant for the program hasn’t increased since it was created in 1996.
the pandemic that number has doubled. “This year, we were able to provide 600 families with turkeys and all the trimmings plus pies and desserts,” Johnson added. “We even had enough money left over so we could provide 120 seniors who live in nursing homes or assisted
living situations with $25 gift cards. We’ve never been able to do that before. We are so grateful and thankful to Mark Crozier and his team at Royal Emerald for taking us under their wings. Their participation in our food drives has made all the difference in the world,” Johnson said. Royal Emerald packed a 26-foot-long truck with highquality foods obtained from
a food distribution center in Temecula, CA. Royal Emerald legal counsel Mike Duff drove the truck to the distribution center where he and Maintenance Supervisor Miguel Ferretiz loaded the truck. “This was the highest quality foods I’ve ever seen donated to a food bank,” Duff said, noting that he volunteered at food banks in San Diego county before relocating
here with the company. “This truck was full of fresh produce, not old stuff. We had fresh kale, celery, squash, watermelons, beautiful dragon fruits, jicama and other fresh vegetables and fruit. We had milk, yogurt, Pepperidge Farms crackers, chicken dumplings, manicotti and other
prepared foods,” Duff added. Grocery stores typically donate expired canned foods, dayold bakeries good and old, blemished produce to food banks. “That was not the case with this truck load,” he said. “This was all high quality stuff.”
By Desert Star Staff In a stern Facebook lecture, Austin Mayor Steve Adler told fellow Texans they needed to stay home or face new lockdowns if coronavirus cases kept rising. He left out that he was speaking from a vacation home in Cabo San Lucas. “We need to stay home if you can. This is not the time to relax. We are going to be looking really closely... We may have to close things down if we are not careful,” the Democrat mayor told Austin residents in a November 9 video. He made no mention of the fact he was actually speaking from a Mexican seaside resort, where he and seven others who attended his daughter’s wedding had arrived the day prior. After the Austin AmericanStatesman made this fact public, Adler released a statement apologizing. “I regret this travel,” said his statement, quoted by the paper. “My fear is that this travel, even having happened during a safer period, could be used by some as justification for risky behavior. In hindsight, and even though
it violated no order, it set a bad example for which I apologize.” Adler denied he broke any actual rules, saying: “There was no recommendation for people not to travel during that period of time.” Likewise, while his daughter’s outdoor wedding technically didn’t have an attendance cap, it had 20 people attending while Austin’s ‘Stage 3’ recommendations advised gatherings of no more than ten. Adler has been heavily involved with Austin’s Covid-19 response, starting with canceling South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in March before any local cases were confirmed. However, he is not the only prominent local politician to be caught skirting either the letter or the spirit of the lockdown rules. Denver, Colorado mayor Michael Hancock literally told his residents to “stay home” and “avoid travel, if you can”just half an hour before boarding a flight to Mississippi, where he would spend Thanksgiving with family. The phrasing of Adler’s apology echoes the words of California Governor Gavin
Newsom after he was photographed dining indoors at the swanky French Laundry restaurant last month. Newsom brushed the scandal off by saying he “should have modeled better behavior.” Last week, Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl photographed dining outdoors at a restaurant in Santa
Monica, mere hours after she voted to ban the practice over Covid-19 safety concerns. In September, Fox News aired security camera footage from a San Francisco beauty salon, showing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) maskless inside the establishment. Pelosi accused the salon owner
of “setting her up,” and the business soon closed down. Since March, Democrat governors, mayors and local officials have been at the forefront of implementing strict lockdowns, mask mandates and other measures to curb Covid-19 across the US and calling for such actions to be enforced nationally.

MUSIC
BY ROBERT KINSLER
Music Heroes Shine On Gift-Worthy Titles
Groundbreaking artists are featured on a collection of fantastic new gift-worthy releases available now. Artist: Berlin Title: Strings Attached (August Day Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Berlin, No Doubt Tell me more: Orange County, California-spawned synth pop favorites Berlin have returned with “Strings Attached,” a project that finds the trio’s beloved 1980s lineup featuring singer Terri Nunn, singer/multi-instrumentalist John Crawford and multiinstrumentalist David Diamond performing classic and new tracks with the backing of a full orchestra. The versions of enticing New wave classics such as “The Metro,” “No More Words,” “Masquerade” and “Sex (I’m A...)” as well as the enduring #1 hit ballad “Take My Breath Away” don’t supplant the original recordings but do add a contemporary touch that will please long-time fans while likely introducing Berlin’s groundbreaking sound to a new generation (writer’s tip: it is a blast to listen to this disc
with headphones). Other great songs on the set include the defiant symphony-meets-synth dance track “Now It’s My Turn,” gorgeous “On My Knees” and lush “You Don’t Know.” A limited edition 4-disc box set of the collection (complete with a signed postcard from the band) is available exclusively for a limited time via the group’s official website. Information: BerlinPage.com. Artist: Blue Öyster Cult Title: Live At Rock Of Ages Festival 2016 (Frontiers Music s.r.l.) You might like if you enjoy: Blue Öyster Cult, Rush Tell me more: Like Rush, The Rolling Stones and Neil Young, classic rock greats Blue Öyster Cult has continued to dip into their recordings vault to issue an ever-growing number of exceptional archival treasures. Look no further than “Live At Rock Of Ages Festival 2016,” a terrific performance captured on the second day of the Rock of Ages Festival in Seebronn, Germany in July 2016. The Stony Brook, New Yorkspawned troupe’s set is fiery and polished, and includes their
most beloved cuts representing their singular hybrid of prog, classic and hard rock styles. The ambitious styles-blending “Golden Age of Leather,” driving harmonies-adorned “Burnin’ For You,” blues rocker “OD’d On Life Itself,” electrifying “Harvest Moon,” primal sing-along “Godzilla” and marathon take on “Don’t Fear (The Reaper)” all are performed with power and artful perfection on the title. The multi-format title “Live At Rock Of Ages Festival 2016,” issued on Dec. 4 for the first-time ever, is available on CD+DVD, stand-alone Blu-ray or via 2LP vinyl. Information: BlueOysterCult.com. Artist: Embrace Titles: Out Of Nothing; This New Day (Craft Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Travis, Keane Tell me more: Two of the best rock albums of the early 21st century, Embrace’s 2004 album “Out Of Nothing” and 2006 follow-up “This New Day” have each received their first-ever vinyl reissue. Yours truly has the limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing of “Out Of
Nothing” and it’s truly glorious; the anthemic “Ashes,” graceful “Gravity,” wistful “Someday” and beautiful “Looking As You Are” sound spectacular. The long-sought-after reissues of the English rock quintet’s #1 U.K. albums were cut at London’s Metropolis Studios and include printed inner sleeves. Each vinyl reissue also includes a download card of the album. Information: CraftRecordings.com. Artist: Van Duren Titles: Are You Serious?; Idiot Optimism (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Paul McCartney, Todd Rundgren, Big Star, the Raspberries Tell me more: Memphis underground hero Van Duren is celebrated on two terrific full-length releases; new reissues of his 1978 debut “Are You Serious?” and the originally-ignored sophomore follow-up “Idiot Optimism” make a remarkable case for a renewed look at a singersongwriter whose talents as top-tier singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist draw
comparisons with Alex Chilton of Big Star, Todd Rundgren and Paul McCartney. Coming from the rich scene that yielded Big Star and Chris Bell, Duren’s recordings reveal themselves with timeless song craft and an otherworldly connection with melody. The yearning “Chemical Fire” and “Waiting,” soulful “Grow Yourself Up” and “New Year’s Eve,” dreamy “So Good To Me (For the Time Being),” potent “Yellow Light” and McCartney-flavored “The Love That I Love” are among the undeniable songs on “Are You Serious?” “Idiot Optimism” — recorded in 1979 and 1980 — was not released until it was issued in Japan without any input from Duren in 1999. The 2020 reissue sets the record straight with 14 tracks (one a medley of two songs), new album artwork, and many previously-unseen photos featured along with detailed new liner notes. The songs here are as strong as on Duren’s debut; the rocking “Bear With Me All The Way,” heartfelt “Tennessee, I’m Trying,” passionate “That,” fervent “Life In Layers,” joyful “Torn In Half,” tuneful “Andy, Please” and a rousing cover of Chris Bell’s “Make a Scene” further certify Van Duren’s brilliance and instincts as an artist. The two titles are available on audio CD, LP, limited-edition colored vinyl and digital. The artist’s self-penned liner notes bolster the power of these important reissues. They’re fun to create and even more enjoyable to dive in to once finished. Texture and color are the name of the game with this recipe. Servings: 6-12 Ingredients: 2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese 2 tablespoons caraway seeds 1 teaspoon poppy seeds 2 cloves garlic, minced, divided 1/4 cup parsley, chopped 2 teaspoons thyme leaves, chopped 1 teaspoon rosemary, chopped 1/4 cup dried cranberries, chopped 2 tablespoons pecans, chopped crackers (optional) fruit (optional) vegetables (optional)
of course, some garlic, just for an extra kick of seasoning. The “gold” ball calls for caraway seeds, poppy seeds and garlic. Finally, the “red” ball includes cranberries and pecans. Simply roll each cream cheese ball around gently until it’s coated. It doesn’t get any simpler than that.
Display the array of cheese balls on a festive plate for something equally cheery and heavenly. Serve the plate with crackers, fruit or vegetables for complementary dipping options. Find more recipes and holiday fun this season at Culinary.net. December 9, 2020

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. Elon Musk’s SpaceX wins close to $1bn in preliminary taxpayer funding
By Desert Star Staff SpaceX has tentatively won a fat payday from the US government to supply broadband internet access to 10 million rural Americans, beating out satellite-based competitors for the privilege of blocking out the night sky. Tesla tycoon Elon Musk’s space exploration company has netted $885,509,638 in government funding to be doled out over the next 10 years to beam highspeed internet access to hundreds of thousands of American homes, the Federal Communications Commission revealed on Monday. The agency published the results of phase I of its $16 billion Rural Digital Opportunity Fund broadband auction, which saw SpaceX come in financially behind just two conventional internet service providers – and far ahead of any of its satellite-based competitors. The only other low-earth-orbit satellite provider who took part in the auction, Hughes, netted a $1.3 million paltry. While conventional
broadband providers Charter Communications and the Rural Electric Cooperative Consortium won more government money than SpaceX, Musk’s company – via its satellite subsidiary Starlink – will serve 35 states, most of the auction winners. Some 642,925 households in rural areas from Wyoming to New York will receive satellite broadband if SpaceX’s longform final proposal is accepted. SpaceX and the other winning companies must submit a more detailed proposal by the end of January to secure FCC funding. Starlink’s broadband delivery has thus far performed well but remains in the beta testing phase. Wannabeearly adopters can participate in the “Better than Nothing Beta” test for the not-so-low price of $499 for a one-time satellite hookup and $99 per month after that. The company hopes to offer its service to the public by mid-2021. The rollout of Starlink’s high-speed broadband across the American countryside will be paid for by the US taxpayer – which is unlikely to sit well
with those concerned about Musk’s multitudinous satellites clogging up their view of the sky. A chorus of astronomers and other scientists have already warned that the ever-growing constellation of Starlink satellites
in low-earth orbit illuminates the night sky too much to see distant stars and planets. Witnessing SpaceX’s taxpayer windfall may light a fire under some of Musk’s competitors. Fellow space-
enthusiast billionaires Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos have both floated the idea of launching their own herds of satellites to deliver high-speed internet access worldwide.

In an effort to discuss everything, he takes his wife out to dinner in a beautiful restaurant. Farewell Amor could have easily slipped into a soap opera, but the finely honed script and razor-sharp, but gentle directing, resulted in an unforgettable family drama, illuminating aspects of the
universal human condition the inherent challenges therein, including sacrifices for the greater good. While all the performances are fully realized, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine’s totally internalized characterization of Walter is spellbinding, and we must patiently await his next role and what awards he will garner. As far as the title Farewell Amor, that could have several interpretations.
