Aqua Caliente Casino Expansion
KMIR News Staff Palm Springs, CA.The Agua Caliente Band Of Cahuilla Indians heard what the public had to say Tuesday about their plans to expand the Spa Resort Casino in downtown Palm Springs. “It was an opportunity for
the public to be introduced to our master plan and to provide their comments to our Indian Planning Commission,” said Margaret Park, director of planning and natural resources for the Agua Caliente Band Of Cahuilla Indians. The Vision Agua Caliente
Master Plan addresses 18 acres of tribal trust land. The plan would allow for the expansion of the Spa Resort Casino by up to 68,000 square feet, the development and replacement of up to 350 hotel rooms and parking for 650 cars.
“They only had about ten people who got up and they had a two minute limit to speak and to ask questions and they were very nice about responding,” said Palm Springs resident Sheri Diamond. The majority of public comments though revolved around the potential for a 175 foot hotel tower, something almost every speaker opposed. “A 175 foot hotel would destroy Palm Springs forever. I mean the whole essence of this town has been low rise,” said Frank Tysen, Co-owner of Casa Cody Bed and Breakfast. One man at the meeting said he would support the plan on the condition The Agua Caliente Band Of Cahuilla Indians use local builders to promote job growth in the desert. Others have argued the development could boost
tourism to Palm Springs and generate millions of dollars in tax revenue. The majority of speakers though expressed their concern over placing a hotel of that size in a city that is known for its “low lines” and mid-century contemporary architecture. “I am personally not in favor of it,” Diamond said. While Palm Springs tourism may see an uptick from the development, some say the expansion could have other consequences. “It’s changing for the benefit of the tourists and the people who come here. So that might help some of the store owners or business owners but those of us who are actually full time residents, I don’t see how that’s benefiting us,” said Diamond. Source KMIR
Controversial Pipeline Project Gets OK By Desert Star Staff LANSING, Mich. – A $4.3 billion natural-gas pipeline that will run through Michigan has been given the green light, sparking concerns about safety, the environment and the direction of energy policy in the state. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has given the ET Rover Pipeline its stamp of approval, saying the project’s benefits outweigh concerns to landowners or surrounding communities. But Nancy Shiffler, the chair of the Beyond Natural Gas and Oil committee for the Michigan Chapter of the Sierra Club, says the construction will pose numerous environmental risks, in addition to those that come from the hydraulic-fracturing process. “Parts of the pipeline go
through forested areas which are habitat for migratory birds and a couple of invasive bat species, and then the pipeline is going to travel under or through some important wetland areas,” she explained. The pipeline already has stirred up controversy across southeastern Michigan, including several incidents in which police had to be called to intervene between surveyors and homeowners. Energy Transfer, the company behind the project, also is responsible for the Dakota Access Pipeline. Respondents to the Moen survey told tales of getting such gaffes as a meat griller for a vegetarian couple, and even “ball and chain underwear.” Good gifts ranged from cookware to dream vacations. However, even with a registry, many realize postnuptials their list may have been less than ideal. If you’re headed down the aisle, plan ahead to avoid these common registry mistakes: • Including impractical items: Think twice before registering for large or specialty products that take
up storage space but may never get used, like a panini press or ice cream maker. • Aspirational registering: Register for pieces that fit who you really are, not who you want to be. • Sticking too much to tradition: Don’t register for traditional items, like silver flatware or formal china, unless you’ll truly use them. “Instead of registering for traditional items you’ll rarely use, consider requesting gifts to make daily life better, like a kitchen faucet with a pulldown hose for easy clean-up, or a soothing rainshower showerhead to provide relaxation after a long day,” suggests Andrea Maher, senior marketing communications specialist, Moen. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 5th Annual Women Who Rule Awards Luncheon and Scholarship fundraiser was held on Feb. 3rd at the Agua Caliente Resort and Spa. The event was presented by Desert Regional Medical Center. They honored 4 exceptional women this year. Women Leaders Forum, WLF, of Coachella Valley gave out 21 scholarships in 2016. Several of the scholarship winners were in attendance and greeted guests as they arrived. Honorees included Susie Harvey, who was given the Desert Visionary Award, and Dr, Sharon Brown-Welty, the Helen Galen Excellence in Education Award and was presented by Helene Galen. Jan Salta was bestowed the Mary T. Roche Community Leadership Award and was presented by WLF founder, Mary T. Roche.Melissa Neiderman was given the WLF inspiration Award. All these women have excelled in their chosen field. Philanthropy was a big topic among the women and how they derive such pleasure in being able to give of themselves and monies to help charities in the Desert. Many of these Women have become leaders, some through a hardship they have had or someone else they have known. Being able to help has not only given help to others but has also given them help. They all have amazing stories to tell, and a
video was shown that explained the service they performed. They inspire others to follow in their paths of giving and leading. Helping others through their dedication, big hearts and mentoring give our young women the inspiration they need to succeed. Education is the key to a successful career in many fields. The WLF provides scholarships for young women who can’t afford college. The mentoring program is important to have a role model to follow and emulate. WLF tries to help our young women become the leaders of tomorrow. They feel the gift of education is priceless to provide a path way to success. The program continues to grow each year, and WLF members are ardent in their support. There was such interest in the medical field that they added a new program for that need. 117 students will participate in these years programs that come from nine Coachella schools that focus on 20 different career fields.

‘Motown’-The Memories, Magic and Music at the Pantages
Judith Franklin as Martha Reeves (center) & Cast MOTOWN THE MUSICAL First National Tour (c) Joan Marcus, 2017 The swinging, song-filled Broadway hit “Motown: The Musical” is based on Berry Gordy’s book “To Be Loved: The Music, The Magic, The Memories of Motown” and is filled to the brim with music from the legendary Motown Catalog. As the founder of Motown, Gordy created music that reached out across a racially divided nation, and in so doing, he transformed popular music. He also launched the careers of such musical icons as Diana Ross and The Supremes, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson and The Jackson Five. While the show is autobiographical, it equally important takes a look back at America during segregation and the life and death of Reverend Martin Luther King. And for an older generation, there are countless songs from their youth, a time when Americans all watched “The Ed Sullivan Show.” on TV every Sunday night. In Act I, circa 1964, Diana Ross makes an appearance on the show and the Ed Sullivan
impersonator was hilarious. It made me feel like a little kid as I watched his performance. The cast is outstanding from Chester Gregory (Berry Gordy), Allison Semmes (Diana Ross), David Kaverman (Smokey Robinson), Jarran Muse (Marvin Gaye) to CJ Wright and Raymond Davis Jr., two gifted youngsters who alternate in the roles of the young Berry Gordy, young Stevie Wonder and the young Michael Jackson. On opening-night 11-year-old CJ Wright from Upland, Calif. performed and brought the house down when he came out to take his curtain call bow. Michael Jackson would have been delighted by CJ’s verve, bounce and talent. The show is all about Gordy and the founding of Motown in the Motor City of Detroit. It begins at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium as the stars whose careers he launched have come to thank and honor Gordy with an evening of songs. The year is 1983. Gordy, however, does not plan to attend since so many of these
singing sensations have left his label for more lucrative contracts. The story then goes back in time to the beginning of Motown. We see how Gordy discovered his young singers and shaped their individual careers. It soon becomes obvious that they had a shared affection for one another, even after they moved on. The ensemble cast is large, and every single performance blends together like a Motown melody. And oh the music. Songs in the show include: “ABC,” “ Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “Baby I Need Your Lovin,’ ” “Baby Love,” “Do You Love Me,” “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” “I Hear a Symphony,” “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “My Girl,” “My Guy,” “Shop Around,” “Hey Mr. Postman,” “Stop in the Name of Love” and many, many more. In fact it was hard not to want to sing along and at one point the whole audience actually gets the chance to sing along with Allison Semmes who plays Diana.
The production values are also excellent— from the sets and lighting design to period costumes. And on opening night, as the audience was giving the show a standing ovation, who to our wondering eyes should appear but Berry Gordy himself. And he was joined on stage by the real Smokey Robinson. It was an evening of musical highlights. Oh what a night. “Motown,” at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre through February 12 only. Then from February 14 to 19 come and enjoy “Circus 1903” with circus acts and giant elephant puppets designed by the creators of the magnificent “War Horse” puppets. This show is perfect for the entire family. Other productions in this new season include: “Finding Neverland,” “An American in Paris,” “Bodyguard” and the hilarious “Book of Mormon.” For tickets and information

US Senate confirms DeVos as education secretary By Desert Star Staff The US Senate has confirmed Betsy DeVos as education secretary, despite efforts by Democratic senators who held the floor for 24 hours in a filibuster. Vice President Mike Pence cast the tie-breaking vote. All 48 members of the Democratic caucus and two Republicans - Senators Lisa Murkowski (AK) and Susan Collins (ME) - voted against DeVos’ confirmation, leading to a 50/50 split. DeVos, a Republican Party chairwoman from Michigan, has faced a number of hurdles in being approved for the post, prompting a wave of opposition which is unprecedented for the position of education secretary. It comes after Senate Democrats held the floor for 24 hours, hoping that at least one Republican would vote against party lines and against DeVos’ confirmation. Speaking ahead of the filibuster on Monday, Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) said the move was aimed at doing “everything we can to persuade just one more Republican to join us.” The vote comes after a rare early-morning session on Friday, in which senators voted along party lines, 52 to 48, to end debate on DeVos’s nomination.
Much of the controversy surrounding DeVos stems from her support of charter schools, leading critics to accuse her of being against public schools. She has been a vocal supporter of such schools, as well as school choice. Conflicts of interest have also plagued DeVos since her nomination, with Democrats noting that her former political action committee had unpaid election fines. They also pointed to campaign contributions to the same GOP senators who have been tasked with considering her for the position of education secretary. Even more issues were raised during her confirmation hearing. The first occurred when she appeared not to know the difference between “proficiency” and “growth” when it comes to students’ test scores and measuring success. “It surprises me you don’t know this issue,” Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) said in response to her apparent lack of knowledge. Disability rights groups and advocates have also taken issue with DeVos. Their discontent arose after she was asked if schools which receive federal funding should abide by the requirements of
the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a federal law that requires public schools to provide “free and appropriate” education to students with disabilities. Her response, much to the disapproval of many, was that the issue was “best left to the states.” When asked by Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) whether DeVos knew that IDEA was a federal law, she responded by saying, “I may have confused it.” DeVos has also been widely criticized for a response she gave when asked if she’d uphold the 2011 guidance on Title IX, which states that colleges and universities must play a role in combating sexual assaults on campus. DeVos said it would be “premature” to answer whether she would uphold the guidance. In addition to Senators expressing their own concerns over DeVos, Congress has been flooded with phone calls from citizens who oppose her appointment. Matt House, a spokesman for Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, said Friday that as many as 1.5 million calls per day had been pouring in last week, according to data from Schumer’s technical
By Desert Star Staff HARRISBURG, Pa. – The state Senate’s Judiciary Committee voted Monday to further restrict abortions in Pennsylvania. The party-line vote approved a measure that would cut the limit on abortion access from 24 weeks to 20. The vote was taken despite the fact that the committee held no public hearings and did not seek input from medical professionals. The only exceptions would be to protect the mother from death or irreversible physical harm. According to Dr. Lisa Perriera, an OB-GYN and abortion provider at the
Philadelphia Women’s Center, if it becomes law this bill would be one of the most restrictive in the country. “There are no exceptions for incest and rape to this bill,” she said. “They have no exceptions for fetal anomalies, which are not often diagnosed until after 19 weeks of pregnancy.” The bill also severely limits the use of a procedure it calls “dismemberment abortions,” which is not a medically recognized term. Perriera says that refers to dilation and evacuation, a commonly used procedure that often is safest for the mother.
“Women should always have the choice of how they want this process to go for them, and by banning this procedure you take choice away from a family that’s going a really difficult time,” she explained. The same bill passed the House of Representatives last year, but did not come up for a vote in the Senate before the end of the legislative session. Last year the president of the Pennsylvania Medical Society wrote that the bill would set a dangerous precedent by legislating specific treatment protocols. Perriera agrees.
staff, as cited by CNN. Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI) tweeted last week that the previous three days had been the “busiest in Capitol switchboard history,” and encouraged citizens to “keep it up.” Meanwhile, Republicans have praised Trump’s selection, including Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.V.), whose support for DeVos remains unchanged despite hundreds of people
turning up for a protest outside her office on Saturday. “As my voting record indicates, I do not agree with Mrs. DeVos on every issue,” Capito said in the statement. “However, I do believe she is a passionate advocate for children and learning, and she will work hard to improve education for all students across West Virginia and the nation.”
“I’m appalled that legislators are trying to put themselves squarely between doctors and patients and try to legislate medicine and basic
health care,” she added. Governor Tom Wolf is expected to veto the bill if it reaches his desk.
