By Beverly Cohn I just spent five days attending the Santa Barbara Film Festival and for the most part, the features, animated shorts, and documentaries were quite professional and compelling. That said, “My Hero Brother,” a documentary that was particularly outstanding, told

the remarkable and inspiring story about a group of Down syndrome young men and women who go on a two-week trek through the Himalayas with their non-Down syndrome siblings. My Hero Brother won the Best Documentary Film Award and the Audience Choice Award at the festival, as well as awards in Israel.

Brilliantly directed by Israeli filmmaker Yonatan Nir, the genesis of the project began with co-producer Enosh Cassel, who eventually initiated the concept. He wanted to get closer to his brother Hannan, who has Down syndrome, and decided to take him on a journey to Nepal. On his return to Israel, he was

presentation, he will discuss studies supported by ICRF that reveal heparanase (an enzyme involved in tumor growth and metastasis) acts as a master regulator of tumor progression, offering new treatment strategies for various cancers and other diseases.

Honorary Chair, Andrew Faas, a cancer survivor himself due to the breakthrough cancer research the ICRF Israeli scientists have conducted, is an author, activitist, philanthropist, and management advisor promoting psychologically healthy, safe, and fair work places.

“Were it not for an Israeli scientist, funded by ICRF, I

contacted by other families with Down syndrome siblings who wanted to have the same experience. Eventually, plans were formulated for a group of siblings – Down and their non-Down brother or sister - to embark on a two-week trek through the Himalayas.

That unbelievable experience became this extraordinary film.

Under these physically demanding circumstances, even a “normal” person would have a challenge traversing some of the really difficult trails. There were dramatic special moments such as when the adorable Tzlil said she couldn’t go on any further Continues on Page 10

This VIP party was exclusively for major donors, sponsors and award recipients. The event was presented by Patti and Jack Grundhofer and the Eisenhower Medical Center.

Several hundred people took part in this special party. Guests were treated to valet-parking for their cars as there was no room near the estate to park.

The estate was all lit up, and the outside garden area was made ready for the hundreds that came on Feb. 10th.

There was an art sale with paintings and sculptures that lined the walls and the pool area inside the home. A few of the artists were on hand to tell about their works of art to the prospective buyers.

The art ranged from the more realistic to abstract and some modernistic style. An art style for everyone’s taste.

Juan Manuel Alonso spoke lovely about his painting while explaining its meaning. Artist Sunn said he had donated a very large 10 foot tall painting with various mediums, including bits of glass of Elizabeth Taylor that was to be auctioned off at the Gala.

I talked with several of the guests, and some said they have been a part of the Steve Chase event and have donated for many years to Desert AIDS Project, DAP;

Partners for Life are some of the biggest donors to DAP, and I talked with one couple that have been donating time and money since 1984. They did entertainment for the parties to encourage people to give to this worthy charity that has grown to help so many people over the years. This VIP Party DAPs way of saying, thank you to so many people for all their support. Guests enjoyed cocktails and appetizers in this remarkable estate.

This is the 23rd yearly event for Desert AIDS Project, DAP. Gala co-chairs were Patrick Jordan, Dave Morgan and Dr. Suzanne Quardt. Guests arrived on a very long Red Carpet that was surrounded by large colorful animal art works by Tony and Karen Barone. Guests were shown to another Red Carpet area where they were photographed and some chosen to speak to the local TV crew and interviewed by Bianca Rae. Photographers and videographers were busy as donors, awardees and special guests arrived.

The last guests on the Red Carpet were the Pointer Sisters and Barry Manilow.

The first award was given to Elizbeth Taylor, who passed away several years ago and was an avid advocate for HIV/ AIDS research and support.

Our own celebrity, Barry Manilow, spoke lovingly about his friendship with Taylor and her undying efforts for this cause. He stated she spent many hours and days in her quest to eradicate HIV/AIDS. Two of her Grandchildren were on hand to accept the award in her honor. They said she would be very proud of this, Partners For Life Award, and that people remembered her, her legacy and her work for this cause.

Guests arrived to a huge display of roses that gave a wonderful scent to the entire room. Guests remarked about the beauty of the estate, and this was their first visit to be able to see the Pond Estate in all its glory. The weather cooperated nicely because it was a nice warm night for an outdoor event. A portion of the Proceeds from the sale of the paintings was given to DAP.

The last award was given to Barbara Keller, who received the 100 Women Award for her continued support in this and many other causes because of her big heart.

Keller serves on many boards, chairs many fundraisers, won many awards, is an author and was co-chair for the Steve Chase gala for 7 years.

Carolyn Caldwell-CEO Desert Regional & Tenet Health Care, who was inspired by Annette Bloch’s donation last year, announced a three milliondollar donation to DAP for their continued help to people and families of HIV/AIDS. Guests eagerly awaited the arrival of the Pointer Sisters, who were the evening’s entertainment, and they were

not disappointed. They had the guests on their feet dancing right away and many just stood by the stage in awe. There was an after party with dancing and entertainment by La Bouche.

There were four professional dancers on platforms. Close to 1500 people attended this spectacular event. President and CEO of DAP, David Brinkman, said they hope to completely eradicate HIV/ AIDS by 2020. They are on the road to accomplish that because of all the support that people have given. They hope people would continue to donate as there are more and more people that need medical and other kinds of assistance that DAP provides.

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. The ancient Chinese concept of yin and yang deals with opposite and inseparable forces. Common interest developments (“homeowner associations”) have their own “yin and yang” issues, in which four basic and inseparable priorities must be balanced to produce a successful and harmonious community.

The four interests to be balanced are the association’s corporate, real estate, financial and community priorities.

Each are critically important areas of emphasis for a healthy community, and the neglect or over-emphasis of one of these priorities often is the root of major association problems and conflict.

The “Corporate:” HOAs are a legal entity, and are governed by legal documents such as covenants and bylaws. Boards must obey laws and the governing documents and observe the corporate process.

The “Real Estate:” HOAs are real estate developments, and their boards must act to preserve, protect and maintain the common area and its architectural theme.

Buildings, streets, and other common elements must be repaired and maintained.

The “Financial:” HOAs collect money from the owners and then spend it to benefit the association community.

Money must be collected diligently and be spent wisely.

Budgets, bids and bills are part of the “bottom line” in the association’s financial world.

The “Community:” HOAs are made up of

people who chose to live in a way which trades some independence for the benefits of cooperatively sharing some control with one’s neighbors. The community interest attends to the fact that the members are not just stockholders or investors but neighbors, and boards promote the peacefulness of the community.

A closer examination the cause of many HOA struggles can often reveal an imbalance between these four central facets of association operation, as certain of these priorities may have been overemphasized or neglected.

The real estate often can conflict with the financial, as a board tries to keep the property in good repair but at the same time keep the budget under control. It can be tempting to put off preventative maintenance or reduce landscaping or janitorial services, in order to try to keep from increasing assessments and “hold the line” on expenses. The financial responsibilities demand that the board is careful to spend reasonably, but if taken too far, can result in member unhappiness as the property deteriorates in appearance.

The corporate interest often can conflict with the association’s community interest. The legalities are important, but too often boards, managers, and lawyers address only part of most decisions, asking “can the board do this,” but failing to ask “should the board do this?” Community interest might influence a board to take extra effort to inform the community in advance of a significant project, even though the

board has the legal power under the bylaws to pursue it without member vote or input.

Community interests might also occasionally influence a board to issue a warning before citing a member who has broken a rule, or to plan and fund community social events to promote interaction between neighbors.

Excellent association living depends upon balancing these competing priorities, making sure the association obeys the law and follows its governing documents; property in the community is well-maintained and presentable; assessment funds are carefully collected

and carefully spent; and the community is a pleasant place to live, with residents feeling they are considered and valued by their association.

Advocates Feel New Urgency to Defend Medicare

By Desert Star Staff PASADENA, Calif. — Rep. Tom Price begins his first full week as secretary of Health and Human Services today, and Medicare advocates say they will continue to push Congress and the new administration to protect the program they call “crucial.”

Price, a Georgia Republican, came under fire from Democrats for being willing to shift costs for Medicare back onto beneficiaries. 50 million Americans - including 5 million in California - rely on the program to help pay for prescription drugs, doctor visits and hospitalizations.

Hilda Delgado, a communications manager at AARP California, said

the group is calling on the public to pay attention to plans from Washington that would attempt to privatize or alter the program.

“Workers have earned these benefits by paying into the program throughout their entire working lives,” Delgado said. “So that is a matter of urgency that we’re calling not just our members statewide, but all Californians to get involved and find out what is happening.”

Advocates do not yet know the specifics of the proposed reforms, but AARP said in a written statement that a voucher system, “would dramatically increase health care costs and risks for current and future retirees.”

Delgado said changes would also impact the more than 7 million Gen-Xers in California in coming years.

“We want to make sure that people receive what they were promised,” she said.

In a recent letter to members of Congress, AARP said it would, “oppose changes to current law that cut benefits, increase costs or reduce the ability of these critical programs to deliver on their benefit promises.”

GOP Health Care Policy “Would Not Work” For Most

By Desert Star Staff CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A key mechanism likely to be part of the Republican replacement for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) would not work for most West Virginians, according to analysis.

GOP plans to replace Obamacare look likely to substitute health savings accounts (HSAs) for the subsidies in the insurance exchanges.

Elise Gould, a senior economist with the Economic Policy Institute, says the idea is people could put thousands of dollars in the accounts and then get a tax break if the money is only used for health care. But she says most people can’t afford to put the money aside ahead of time.

“They’re really of no use to people who are lower income, because they don’t have the money to put into it, they’re not going to see that tax benefit,” she points out. “So you are not really helping low and

moderate-income Americans that are having the harder time affording their medical care.”

Republicans in Congress have long attacked the ACA as undermining free markets.

But they are struggling to find a workable replacement.

West Virginia is one of the states with the largest increase in households gaining health coverage since the passage of Obamacare – most of them members of the working poor.

Ted Boettner, executive director of the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy, says if Congress tries to use HSAs as a substitute for the subsidies in the exchanges, many of those families will be kicked off of their insurance.

“Health savings accounts are good for very wealthy, healthy people,” he states.

“But they are not a good way to provide health care for a majority of West Virginians.”

Why Are You Avoiding the Doctor?

By Desert Star Staff Most Americans want to stay healthy and prevent disease and illness. For many, this means getting regular check-ups and using their health plan benefits. For others, it seems that ignorance is bliss.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Americans get their preventive services only about half the time, even though preventive care is fully covered at no cost by most health plans under the Affordable Care Act. Preventive services save lives and decrease suffering from advanced illnesses.

Sportsmen Stand Up to Defend BLM 2.0

By Desert Star Staff DENVER -- A coalition of sportsmen and conservation groups is standing up for the Bureau of Land Management’s new land-use planning policies after the U.S. House invoked a rarely used rule to roll back the initiative. The Senate is expected to vote on eliminating the rules as early as this week.

Suzanne O’Neill, executive director at the Colorado Wildlife Federation, said the rules ensure public input from the get-go on the multiple uses of public lands and benefit oil, gas, timber and outdoor recreation industries alike.

“This is good for everybody,” O’Neill said, “because under the rule, everyone can participate in identifying potential conflicts - or real conflicts - and then roll up our sleeves and try

to figure out what are the options for resolving them.”

If the Senate follows the House’s lead and overturns what has been called BLM 2.0, the Congressional Review Act prohibits the bureau from issuing similar rules in the future. O’Neill said that would undermine years of work by industry, outdoor enthusiasts and conservation groups to improve the bureau’s operations.

Ferraro says the legislation also weakens disclosure rules by eliminating current law that says all owners must be listed on the permit application.

Senate confirms Steven Mnuchin as treasury secretary

By Desert Star Staff Former Goldman Sachs banker Steven Mnuchin was confirmed as the next secretary of the US Treasury Department.

In a 53-47 vote on Monday, the Senate approved another of President Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees.

Mnuchin is expected to be sworn in later Monday night.

The vote was largely along party lines, with only one exception in Senator Joe Manchin III (D-West Virginia), who also broke with his party February 15, 2017

when he cast his vote for Jeff Sessions as Attorney General.

Court of Appeals in S.F. Rules Against Reinstating Travel Ban

By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO - The Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco on Thursday announced its verdict on whether to reinstate the travel ban on some

refugees from conflict zones - and voted unanimously to keep the status quo in place and allow those travelers to enter the United States.

The story is far from over, said Democracy Fund senior

fellow Daniela Gerson, who teaches journalism with a focus on immigration and ethnic issues at California State University at Northridge.

While she isn’t surprised by the verdict, Gerson said, what

did surprise her is how divisive this issue has been locally.

“The amount of interest this has triggered, and the emotion on both sides, is really extraordinary,” she said. “It’s nothing I have ever seen, and I’m fascinated to see how that continues to play out, as the story continues to develop.”

Gerson’s point is underscored by a recent Los Angeles Times review of what California’s 54-member congressional delegation has said about the ban. It showed a distinct split down party lines on the question of whether to restrict people’s entry into the United States from certain countries.

California often is portrayed as spearheading the socalled sanctuary movement, but its politics reflect more traditional party divisions than secessionist tendencies.

Gerson said she’ll be watching

in the coming weeks to see if this case will have wider implications for Trump’s other executive orders.

“I will be watching as the other executive orders are implemented,” she said, “and where they’re brought to the courts and where they’re not both on local levels, in district courts and then ultimately, also on the national level.”

President Trump’s order flagged travelers from seven majority-Muslim nations.

Supporters of the ban have said these nations contain active sponsors of terrorism and that the president should have the authority to institute such a ban. The Trump administration could continue to push the issue to the U.S. Supreme Court.

NC Death Row Inmate Resentenced to Life in Prison

By Desert Star Staff ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- After spending more than 20 years on death row, Phillip Davis has now been re-sentenced to life in prison instead.

The decision was handed down Friday in a Buncombe County courtroom after attorneys for the Center for Death Penalty Litigation successfully argued that under today’s standards, Davis probably would not have been sentenced to death.

His attorney, Shelagh Kenney, explained.

“The landscape of pursuing a death sentence is very different now than it was then,” Kenney said. “At the time that Mr. Davis was arrested, a DA couldn’t really exercise discretion to take a possible death sentence off the table.”

At age 18, Davis was convicted of murdering his aunt and cousin. But courts now recognize that the brains of juveniles are not sufficiently formed to understand the consequences of their actions.

In his case, Davis had a low IQ, unstable family life and serious mental health problems.

Additionally, Davis, an African-American, was convicted by an all-white jury, after prosecutors dismissed the only qualified black juror.

Buncombe County district attorney Todd Williams is being applauded for his action in this case.

“Mr. Davis, age 18 and a quarter, came to court and pled guilty without the benefit of any negotiation with the state and faced an all-white jury - where there was some questions as to

that selection of that jury - and was sentenced to death on one of two counts,” Williams said.

Davis’s attorney has also spoken highly of Williams.

“We have been really impressed by the ability of the elected DA in Buncombe County to have an open door, to allow us to bring important aspects of Mr. Davis’s case to him,” Kenney said.

She also pointed to the public resources saved by no longer keeping Davis on death row, and added that the victims’ families supported the decision. Since his crime, Davis has consistently expressed deep regret over his actions.

There are 148 people currently on death row in North Carolina. No one has been executed in the state since 2006.

“What once seemed like something only for ‘The Jetsons’ is quickly becoming everyday reality in the

automotive landscape,” says Brian Moody, executive editor for Autotrader. “And it’s not just vehicles with a high pricepoint. Many mainstream family cars are now equipped with technology features only seen on top-of-the-line luxury vehicles just a few short years ago.”

Experts say that while consumers should embrace the convenience and enhanced safety offered by new-car technology, they also need to educate themselves so they fully understand what these features can -- and just as importantly, what they cannot -- do.

“Understanding your car can help you become a better, safer driver,” says Moody.

However, the future may also involve less driving. Selfdriving technologies are become more sophisticated, affordable and normalized. ‘Circus-1903’ Photo by Mark Turner “The Lion,” written and performed by Benjamin Scheuer, under the direction of Sean Daniels, is a profoundly moving musical memoir.

Scheuer’s story, told through original songs connected by dialogue, detail his life’s journey from boyhood to the present day. The stage is basically bare, adorned only by two chairs, two microphones and the six guitars he plays throughout. From beginning to end he brings you into his world, and the emotions he evokes to connect you to his life in a very meaningful way.

In a recent interview with Amy Levinson he paraphrased lyricist Yip Harburg, who wrote, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow, noting that according to Harburg, “Words are how we think and music is how we sense so songs allow us to think our emotions and sense our thoughts.”

He learned to love music from his father, a complex man who taught Ben how to play

on a homemade “Cookie-tin Banjo” with rubber bands for strings. He still has that little banjo tucked away. Two other songs at the beginning of the show, “The Lion” and “Dear Dad,” are a tribute to his late father. And even though their relationship was a complicated one, he is forever grateful to his dad for giving him the gift of music, which has been a constant comfort to him throughout his life.

Many of the songs performed in “The Lion” are played on alternate tunings.

“That,” says Scheuer, “means the different guitars are tuned differently to different chords.

This is the reason there are six guitars on stage. Also the songs in the show often employ a technique called ‘hybrid picking’ where the right hand is playing three different melodic lines at once: bass with the pick, chords with the middle and forefinger and melody with the pinky.

Scheuer is a very ingratiating young performer who draws you into his personal story as he explores his relationship with his father, mother and his two brothers as well as other challenges he has faced throughout his life.

“My Hero Brother” - A Tribute to the Human Spirit because her legs hurt. Her sister Shaked was patient and understanding and after a comforting discussion, she agreed to continue, but riding a horse instead of walking.

Smiles all around. Another poignant scene was when one of the Down young men started to cry saying that he wanted his mommy or daddy. He was lovingly consoled and eventually agreed to rejoin the group.

But, despite the occasional emotional or physical breakdowns, encouraged by their siblings, and the loving group, no one wanted to turn back and eventually, when they reached the summit, they emerged triumphantly, overcoming the physical and psychological challenges inherent in this disorder.

project has been instrumental in the Schnitzer/Novak Breast Center at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage becoming one of the premier breast centers in the US. Those attending the party were surrounded by art such as an arrangement of food inspired lithographs, dated 1971

by Salvador Dali. Apparently, he was impressed by images discovered in a cookbook.

Taking it to the next level, he created a series of lithographs he called “Nocturnal Delights.”

In addition, on the show, artworks by Mary Cassatt, Pablo Picasso, Camille Pissarro and Andrew Wyeth. The diversity of Heather James Fine Art was obvious with a trio of paintings by John William, a Victorian Neo-classicist with a talent for painting “beautiful

women in studied poses.”

Coachella Valley Radio Control Club Jet Jam

By Shirley Brenan This is president’s week, and the Coachella Valley Radio Control Club has some exciting events scheduled for the whole family. The Coachella Valley Jet Jam is on February, 16, 17 and 18 at their flying field at 54th Ave. and Pierce St. in Thermal. (Please go to their

This flying club with 150

members is expecting about 40 jet pilots to arrive with their 1/5 to ¼ scale models of P-80’s, F-86s, Vipers, A-10 Warthogs, F-14 Tomcats and other exciting aircraft.

Children love the speed and noise of these planes that race across the runway at 200 miles per hour and

parents and grandparents often feel nostalgia at seeing these planes in action.

Club President Dan Metz and their board of directors are looking forward to this event. For the last two years President Obama, has arrived to play golf during President’s week, which meant their event was under a TFR (temporary flight restriction) so they couldn’t fly higher than 1000 feet. Good news for this year - no president and no restrictions.

Metz said, “This is actually our fifth Jet Jam, and the jet pilots love to come into our field as their jets fly best in dense air, which we have here at sea level. We are a 501 (C3) but continue to take pride in helping other organizations.

We have received service awards yearly from the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) for our work.”

There was a live auction and a raffle to raise money for, Bringing Music to Children. Ruth Moir founded the Steinway Society in 2002 to bring classical music to schools. Ruth Moir and her colleagues bring concerts and

art education to our youth in the Coachella Valley. Guests were treated to a champagne reception and a delicious lunch before the concert.

Ruth Moir gave the welcoming speech to the guests, and the awards were given. Honorees were Dr. Celeste L. Amaya, Dr. Anthony Bassanelli and Dr. Ranier Bergmann. A surprise honor was given to Phyllis Eisenberg for her valued support for the

Steinway Society. Each of the honorees gave a performance for the guests. Dr. Amaya played a Fantastic Impromptu and Song of India, Dr. Bassanelli played, Rhapsody in Blue, and Dr. Bergmann played, Prelude Selections.

The young pianist, Jadon Wu, played “Impromtu in E Flat Major” like a professional, and he is only 10 years old. He is an amazing pianist already

and loves to perform. He is the 2016 Steinway Society Junior Competition winner. He said he would like to be a piano-playing doctor like the honorees today. The other entertainment included the Village Klezmer Band and Doc Reid Group.

Desert Hot Springs Classical Concerts

By Shirley Brenon Classical music has arrived in Desert Hot Springs by way of professional musician Danny Holt, who is a classicallytrained pianist, percussionist and composer. Holt moved to Desert Hot Springs in 2010.

He said, “I fell in love with the awe-inspiring landscape and the serenity I felt in the desert.

I am endlessly fascinated by the region, and I am so happy to call the desert home.”

Soon after arriving, he noticed a lack of arts and entertainment in his new community and decided he could contribute. So far, since 2014, he has produced 10 free classical concerts and has four more set up for the 2017

season. He said, “I’m extremely excited about the new season because of the high caliber of the performers we are bringing in. All the artists are seasoned professionals and are great at bringing the music to life for our audiences by sharing stories about the music and the composers. Because of that, those unfamiliar with classical music find themselves very comfortable at the concerts.”

These classical music concerts are being supported by a grant from the City of Desert Hot Springs Community and Cultural Affairs Commission, local businesses and private donors. Holt is doing all he can to sustain them as free entertainment

by volunteering his services, making deals with his professional musical friends and holding fundraisers. He also raised money to repair the piano at Christ Lutheran Church and just in time for the season-opening concert.

Recently, 17 classical music fans helped the cause by spending a delightful afternoon in his patio located in the foothills of the Little San Bernardino Mountains.

What more could you ask for but home-baked cookies, coffee, tea and Holt playing some intriguing pieces on his grand piano. He played some works written by relatives of famous composers, namely J.S.Bach’s son,

The 2017 concert season will begin with the Blakemore Trio on Saturday, February 18 @ 6 pm at Christ Lutheran Church, 64565 Pierson Blvd, Desert Hot Springs. Nashville’s premiere piano trio (violin, cello, piano) will include work

by Mozart, Shostakovich, and Los Angeles composer Adam Schoenberg.

These concerts are open to the public, and admission is free. You are encouraged to bring donations of nonperishable food items (for

Food Now, the local food bank administered by Family Services of the Desert), and cash donations are also welcome at the door to benefit the church’s flood recovery fund. Audience members are encouraged to arrive about 10 minutes early, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Enormous pit of melting carbon the size of Mexico discovered under US

‘Planetary embryo’: Carbon brought to Earth 4.4bn yrs ago in planet collision

– OA reservoir of melting carbon covering an area almost the size of Mexico has been discovered beneath the western US, casting doubt over previous estimates of carbon levels inside the Earth.

The discovery was made by a team from the University of Royal Holloway London using the world’s largest array of seismic sensors that identified the carbon

from vibrations generated in Earth’s upper mantle.

The reservoir is believed to have been formed when a Pacific tectonic plate was forced underneath the western US, per the research published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters.

“It is a result of one of the tectonic plates of the Pacific Ocean forced underneath the western US, undergoing partial melting, thanks to gasses like CO2

‘Climate change time bomb’: Ancient carbon slowly seeping from permafrost

and H2O contained in the minerals dissolved in it,” study author Dr Sash HierMajumder of Royal Holloway said in a statement.

Located 217 miles (350km) below the planet’s surface the reservoir is estimated to cover 695,000 sq miles (1.8 million sq km).

Following their research, the scientists say that the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s upper mantle could be up to February 15, 2017

100 trillion metric tons.

The carbon in the upper mantle isn’t expected to stay underground forever, instead it’s slowly making its way up to the surface via volcanic eruptions – adding to the carbon already being emitted into the atmosphere by humans.

“We might not think of the deep structure of the Earth as linked to climate change above us, but this discovery not only has

implications for subterranean mapping but also for our future atmosphere,” HierMajumder added.

“Releasing only 1 percent of this CO2 into the atmosphere will be the equivalent of burning 2.3 trillion barrels of oil.

5 Things to Know if Someone You Love is Addicted to Painkillers

By Desert Star Staff Fifty-two people die every day from opioid overdoses nationwide, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 12 million U.S. residents used prescription painkillers nonmedically in the past year.

Unfortunately, even a small dosage can depress respiratory function, and these drugs can be especially dangerous when combined with other common substances like alcohol and sleeping pills.

What’s more, prescription drug abuse can be addictive, and even lead to heroin use.

If you love someone who may be addicted to prescription painkillers, here are five things the National Safety Council says you should know.

1. Addiction is a chronic disease that affects the brain.

Addiction, like heart disease or

diabetes, leads to increasingly poor health, and can be fatal if it’s not effectively treated and managed. People who suffer from addiction still have selfworth and should be treated with dignity. Unfortunately, shame and discrimination prevent many individuals from seeking treatment. Recovery can be achieved in many different ways and all recovery efforts should be celebrated.

2. Medication Helps. Opioid and heroin addiction cause a chemical imbalance in the brain, which medication can help repair. There are three major medications typically used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes counseling and participation in social support programs: Buprenorphine, methadone and naltrexone. Buprenorphine and methadone diminish the effects of withdrawal and cravings

restoring brain chemistry.

Naltrexone blocks the euphoric effects of opioids and heroin.

Buprenorphine and naltrexone can be administered by health care providers. Methadone is delivered in specialized clinics.

3. Traditional treatments aren’t always effective.

Recovery is a lifelong journey.

Unfortunately, some traditional treatments focus on quicker fixes like attempting it alone or by going cold turkey, which ultimately can be detrimental.

Indeed, rates of relapse and overdose are higher for people who have gone through 30day treatment programs, and 56 percent of people who leave treatment centers relapse within the first week.

However, medications, can offer longer-term solutions, and are often less expensive than in-patient treatment. If traditional substance abuse

programs haven’t worked, consider medication.

4. Support is critical.

A failed cycle of detox and inpatient therapy, then relapse, can leave a person feeling hopeless. This is why support is critical. Doctors and treatment counselors are important, but even more so is a well-informed support group of family and friends.

“Addiction is not a broken arm that can be fixed. It’s like being on a permanent diet with a piece of candy staring at you every day,” says Avi Israel, a survivor advocate who lost his son after battling a prescription drug addiction. He advises friends and family of patients to, “Know the signs of addiction. Don’t judge. Throw tough love out the window.

Love. But love with structure.”

5. Understanding addiction is crucial. Both patients and

their friends and family should understand that addiction is a disease, and know what is needed to manage it.

“My son had Crohn’s disease, and I knew everything about that. I wish I had known as much about addiction,” says Israel.

There are more options than traditional 30-daytreatment programs and 12step programs. In addition to medication, there are support programs like SMART recovery, which provide attendees with tools based on the latest scientific research, as well as a worldwide community with self-empowering, sciencebased support groups.

U.S. Family Courts Often Award Custody to Alleged Abuser

– Over the past eight years, custodial parents killed 58 American children after a court ignored abuse claims by a protective parent, according to the Center for Judicial Excellence.

And a new investigative report, published by 100Reporters.org, says family courts systemically discredit claims of child abuse and award custody to the accused parent.

Reporter Laurie Udesky, the author of that report, interviewed 30 families from across the nation who lost custody battles even after their children’s claim of abuse www.desertstarweekly.com

was substantiated by police or child protective services – only to see the abuse continue.

Udesky says the crisis is fueled by a lack of accountability in a family court system that too often dismisses credible evidence of abuse, while accepting questionable theories that can subvert the protective parents’ credibility.

“There is a dubious theory called parental alienation syndrome that’s used to discredit the abuse and it says that the mother is brainwashing the child,” she states.

Udesky adds it’s a systemic problem in which judges, custody evaluators

and mediators often see the father as the more confident, credible and financially stable parent.

Udesky maintains court officials would benefit from additional training on domestic violence and child sexual abuse.

The article cites research coauthored by Linda Krajewski, an adjunct professor of psychology at San Bernardino Valley College and Geraldine Stahly, emeritus professor of psychology at California State University, San Bernardino.

In that study, Krajewski and her colleagues surveyed almost 400 parents who lost custody while trying February 15, 2017

to defend their children.

“Quite often the person who has been identified as the perpetrator, as the abuser, winds up getting custody and sometimes we wind up with protective moms losing custody and even being on supervised visitation at least in part because of their efforts to defend their children,” Krajewski states.

Krajewski says part of the problem is that the mothers often were abused themselves, and suffer symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder that hamper their ability to present themselves well in court.

She also notes that the fathers can often

afford much more effective legal representation.

There is little research on court costs, but Krajewski and Stahly’s preliminary analysis of a national survey of the same 399 protective parents surveyed showed that the costs were about $100,000 for some 27 percent of these parents who ultimately declared bankruptcy.

Gen. Michael Flynn resigns as National Security Advisor

By Desert Star Staff Michael Flynn, national security advisor to President Trump, stepped down over his phone talks with the Russian ambassador. The Kremlin spokesman, however, denied that lifting economic sanctions was discussed during the conversations.

Editor’s note: The original version of this article mistakenly said Flynn “retired” instead of “resigned.”

Trump named retired Lt. General Joseph Keith Kellogg, Jr. as Acting National Security Advisor, according to Flynn’s resignation letter. Trump is reportedly considering other permanent replacements.

“In the course of my duties as the incoming National Security Advisor, I held numerous phone calls with foreign counterparts, ministers, and ambassadors,” Flynn wrote. “These calls were to facilitate a smooth transition and begin to build the necessary relationships between the President, his advisors and foreign leaders.

Such calls are standard practice in any transition of this magnitude.”

“Unfortunately, because of the fast pace of events, I inadvertently briefed the Vice President Elect and others with the incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the

Russian Ambassador. I have sincerely apologized to the President and the Vice President, and they have accepted my apology.”

Media outlets speculated in recent days over the contents and consequences of the phone call between Flynn and Russian Ambassador Sergey I. Kislyak.

The New York Times reported Monday that officials close to Vice President Mike Pence said Pence believed Flynn was lying when he downplayed his conversation with Kislyak, based on unreleased transcripts of their talk. The Washington Post reported that former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates and a national security official told White House consel Donald McGahn that Flynn was possibly vulnerable to Russian blackmail attempts.

On Thursday, the Washington Post cited administration officials who claimed that the a main topic of the phone call was the sanctions.

The Russian authorities have stated that sanctions did not come up during the phone call.

Russian President Vladimir Putin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov assured reporters on Monday that Flynn and Kislyak had not discussed lifting sanctions, and neither

had any other official Russian and US representatives.

“We have already said there have not been any [such talks].

“Obviously every ambassador informs the [authorities in Moscow] about all the contacts he has so the information gets to us, but we are not willing to comment on internal discussions being held in Washington,” Peskov said, as cited by TASS. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Peskov chose not to elaborate on the issue. “We would not like to comment on it in any way,” he said, when asked about Flynn’s departure, stressing “this is a domestic issue of the Americans and the Trump

administration, not ours.”

Flynn’s 24-day run on the National Security Committee was the shortest stint as national security advisor ever.

Michael Maloof, a former senior security policy analyst for the US Secretary of Defense, told RT the development appears to be a huge gain for US mainstream media and the Democrats.

“I think this is a victory for mainstream media and for the Democrats. They don’t like this administration and they’re going to do everything they can to chip away its credibility, and this is just the beginning,” Maloof told RT on Tuesday.

Flynn’s resignation itself “was a crescendo of noise from the mainstream media,

and it distracted the White House from trying to get its job done,” Maloof said, adding, “The basic issue is – could Flynn, who was private citizen, be even talking to Russian ambassador about sanctions being lifted?

“That comes under what we call Logan Act, a 1799 law that has never been prosecuted, and it’s crazy,” the former Pentagon official added, referring to a law that outlaws negotiations between unauthorized citizens and foreign states in a dispute with the US. Violations under the Logan Act – last amended in 1994 – are still considered a felony and are punishable by a fine or imprisonment.

“The Four Seasons is very close to the northern route and that unfortunately poses a privacy issue, a security issue and a quiet enjoyment

of our homes issue,” said Four Seasons resident Jeri Barry.

“When we purchased them as desert lots, we were assured that because of environmental conditions nothing would ever be built between our wall and route ten. And so this is infringing upon that,” said Four Seasons resident Frank Tinney.

The Coachella Valley Association of Governments says they are taking all concerns into account.

“We heard from the Four Seasons community that they wanted us to study additional options. So there is now a total of four options when you talk about the Four Season community, including an on street alternative and

we’ve included all that in the environmental report so that way when our executive committee determines the final alignment, they can really make the best decision,” said Erica Felci, governmental projects manager for the Coachella Valley Association of Governments.

The public comment period will end on February 21 at which point CVAG will look at the public’s written comments and incorporate those comments into the final environmental impact report. Palm Springs Holds CV Link Town Hall Meeting

By Vince Marino/KMIR PALM SPRINGS, Ca. - Community members in Palm Springs packed the city council chambers Monday night for a town hall meeting on the CV Link.

“This is the first time we’ve really had a public hearing on the CV Link. Many of us around the Coachella Valley have been working on this for a long time. And so tonight we’re going to have an opportunity to hear from the citizens of Palm Springs,” said Palm Springs Mayor Pro Tem Ginny Foat.

The CV Link is a 50-mile passageway for bicycles, pedestrians and low speed electric vehicles. Supporters of the project say there are

several benefits to consider.

“A bike path like that supports tourism, it supports Eco-tourism, it supports recreation and those are the kinds of things that bring visitors to our valley,” said Henry Hampton.

Others say tourists aren’t the only ones who stand to gain.

“It’s more of what young adults want in the future here in the Coachella Valley. We want to experience our valley without the need of a car,” said CV Link supporter Arvin Ocampo.

Most of the residents of the Four Seasons near the northern part of the route in Palm Springs see it a different way.

Authorities ignored California dam warning for 12 years

By Desert Star Staff A warning issued 12 years ago that California’s Oroville Dam could be at risk of eroding was apparently ignored by the authorities. America’s tallest dam was reported to be at risk of collapsing Sunday night, forcing mass evacuations.

A document released by three environmental groups more than a decade ago said that the dam’s “ungated spillway” design could result in the “loss of crest control” and threaten people’s lives.

The potential risk from the Oroville Dam was highlighted in a motion from October 2005 by three environmental groups – Friends Of The River, Sierra Club, and South Yuba River Citizens

League (SYRCL) – which was sent to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

The document resurfaced when SYRCL said in its statement on recent events with the dam that it had raised the issue back in 2005.

The group also released a link to the 2005 motion.

Back then, the groups called on the commission to check the existing structures at the dam, and if necessary to “reconstruct the ungated spillway and to make any other needed modifications so that the licensee can safely and confidently conduct required surcharge operations consistent with the Corps of Engineers Oroville Dam Reservoir Regulation Manual.”

Malissa Ann Ancona, 44, and her son, Paul Edward Jinkerson, Jr., 24, are being charged with firstdegree murder, tampering with physical evidence, and abandonment of a corpse.

Both defendants are being held without bond, and are expected to be arraigned as early as Tuesday.

A probable cause statement released by the Leadwood Police Department on Thursday says that Ancona was shot and killed inside his home, before his body and vehicle were abandoned near the Big River outside of Belgrade Missouri, according to The Daily Journal.

Ancona’s wife Malissa said he left home after being called to work to make an out of state delivery of car parts. According to police, no such call was made, however, and his place of employment had reached out to Leadwood Police Department citing concerns about his whereabouts.

His wife said he took all of his firearms with him when he left, although other members

of his family have disputed this. He left a handgun he usually carried with him in the house, which his wife handed over to the police.

Police said a safe in the Anconas’ home had been opened with a crowbar and emptied when they arrived at the house.

On Saturday, Washington County Sheriff Zach Jacobsen, posted a Facebook message, reporting that Ancona was discovered, along with his abandoned vehicle. He also said that two search warrants were issued, and an arrest was made.

When questioned, Malissa first told authorities that she last saw her husband on Wednesday when he left the state on a delivery as a part of his job. She informed them he took all of his guns with him and planned to file for a divorce when he came back.

Searching the home, investigators found “extensive blood evidence” in the master bedroom of the home, as well as evidence that Ancona’s abandoned car had been “wiped down,” according to St. Louis Today.

After the evidence was found, Leadwood Detective Matt Wampler questioned Malissa Ancona again, who then admitted that her son shot her husband and that they

appeared to be less dire, as the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) issued a statement saying that there was no danger that the dam itself would collapse, as the incident had affected only an emergency spillway.

Mahurin says that Ancona may have been murdered because he wanted a divorce.

“It may have been a marital issue,” Mahurin told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Monday after filing murder charges. He said Ancona was shot in the head between two and three in the morning on Thursday.

Ancona was a member of the Traditionalist American Knights of the KKK. The white supremacist group claims its mission is “to preserve our White culture and heritage” and “defeat these communist socialist anti-God anti-white anti-American enemies within our own borders.”

Ancona has made numerous media appearances, and previously claimed the KKK is not a hate group.

During the 2014 Ferguson protests over the police killing of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown, Ancona referred to demonstrators as “terrorists” and said the KKK would use lethal force to defend against the protesters.

Ancona’s recent relationship with the Loyal White Knights of the KKK has seemingly deteriorated as its website accuses Ancona of being a Jew and a “federal informant.”

The site claims Ancona “first popped up out of nowhere declaring himself Imperial Wizard of his Fake Klan which we all assume is a group created by the government, ADL or JEWISH Southern Poverty Law Center to collect names of White ’extremist’ as they call us to turn into the government to put on ‘Terrorist watch list’.”

Steve Martin comedy gets a facelift and it shines

But if memory serves me right, the version of “Picasso at the Lapin Agile”, production I saw at the Westwood Playhouse back in 1994 (now called the Geffen Playhouse), wasn’t quite what I witnessed on the Shiley Stage at San Diego’s venerable Old Globe Theatre last week.

Twenty three years later, we’re immersed in a culture with innovative ideas and creative ways to bring them to today’s theatre audiences.

When the Old Globe Theatre appointed Barry Edelstein its Artistic Director in October of 2012, the bridge from the past to an exciting and innovative new era became a reality. The last five years of Edelstein’s stewardship has been nothing short of theatrical excellence, in all its forms: old, new, and its experiments with the classics, the standards, and, now, the many challenging stories the twenty-first century will present to its audiences.

The revival production of Steve Martin’s “Picasso at the Lapin Agile”, now on the Shiley stage, benefits from the close working association between Erna Finci Viterbi play director Barry Edelstein and playwright Martin. This production marks the third play to grace the boards of the Old Globe that have been written

by Martin; the other two being the 2014 musical “”Bright Star”, and the 2016 sophisticated comedy “Meteor Shower”.

Edelstein, has gathered for this revival version of “Lapin Agile”, an outstanding group of actors, comedians, and farceurs, all with impeccable timing who generate enough on-stage energy to light half of San Diego.

The story in short, is set in 1904 Paris at the Lapin Agile Bar, a beloved watering hole to struggling artists and wouldbe geniuses. The regulars www.desertstarweekly.com

prepare for the arrival of two soon-to-be legends Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso who are scheduled to drop in for one extraordinary night where the two ego maniacs, as big as their intellects, spar with the patrons and each other about art, science, inspiration, love, and the promise of the 20th century. Toss into this mix a character known only as “the visitor”, and one is in for brilliant, witty, and a highly entertaining evening in the theatre. Steve Martin wasn’t known as a ‘wild and crazy guy for nothing.

Like the pizza man – he delivers. Actually, he’s a very intelligent and accomplished writer, playwright, actor, and musician, and an allround Renaissance Man. The stellar cast ‘in order of appearance’ (remember this notation it will produce a laugh later) includes: Donald Faison, as Freddy, the owner/bartender of the Lapin Agile, Hal Linden as Gaston, the old gent with a weak bladder problem who delivers loads of zingers, Luna Velez as Germaine, the girlfriend/philosopher of Freddy, Justin Long as Albert Einstein, the world’s, at this moment in time, is a youthful, confident, and oddly appealing genius in waiting, Liza Lapira as the sexy Suzanne, a one-nightstand partner of Picasso, Ron Orbach as Sagot, the slick art dealer, Philippe Bowgen as Pablo Picasso, in all his preening and womanizing self, Marcel Spears as Charles Dabernow Schmendiman, a self-proclaimed business genius with a touch of P.T. Barnum in his resume, and Kevin Hafso-Koppman as the mysterious ‘visitor.

The ‘visitor’ maybe mysterious, but it’s no mystery as to why this production just soars. When nine highly talented actors are directed by the brilliant and inventive Mr. Edelstein, there can be only be one result: a first class production. The stage literally becomes a kaleidoscope of

color along with comedyinsight, thanks to the talents of Scenic Designer John Lee Beatty, and Lighting Designer Russell H. Champa, who both recreate and pay homage to the City of Light, just as this terrific ensemble cast does. Costumes designed

Diego Theatre Critics Circle.
