By Desert Star Staff Treacherous freezing rain turned the street into a slide within a few moments - and then there was a crash.

On Interstate 35W near Fort Worth (US state Texas), more than 100 vehicles pushed into each other on Thursday. At least six people died. Dozens were

injured. Several victims are in mortal danger.

The pictures give an idea of the horror in the heavy rush hour traffic. Trucks literally crushed passenger cars, cars were squashed against each other, and the force of the impact caused them to lie on top of each other.

According to the local

broadcaster WFAA, the rubble field extends over a total of around 2.5 kilometers.

According to the fire department, several people were locked in their vehicles.

Rescue workers reported problems fighting their way through the rubble to trapped people.

At least 65 people

were treated in the hospital, including several critical injuries, a spokesman said.

Helpers fell on the slippery road. Even an ambulance had an accident, and the crew got away with the horror.

Helpers worried that people waiting for rescue in their cars threatened hypothermia after hours in

sub-zero temperatures. A collection center has been set up nearby for families.

The pile-up occurred around 6 a.m. in the morning.

The trigger was freezing rain and snow. Police urged drivers to be cautious in the face of persistent dangerous weather conditions.

By Pamela Price Mrs. Tependris, the outspoken worldly know-kit-all character created by Greek artist Konstantin Kakanias, has earned her right to be a fictional legend in the art world. Sassy, sophisticated and somewhat sincere, she was created by Mr. Kakanias, a popular Greek artist who divides his time between Athens, Greece and downtown Los Angeles with cameo appearances in New York, Miami and Palm Beach.

Kakanias has tickled the artsy set with his clever captions that focus on the one and only “Mrs. Tependris,” a quasi-self-styled sophisticated woman who knows a little something about everyone and everything (from soccer stars to chauffeured limousines) on a global basis.

1 package Chef’s Craft Chicken Breast Fillets, cooked according to package directions, sliced sesame seeds, for garnish To make honey soy glaze: In small saucepan over medium heat, combine chicken broth, soy sauce, honey, garlic and ginger.

Bring to simmer. In small bowl, combine cornstarch and water; stir into honey soy sauce and let cook approximately 1 minute, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens.

In large skillet or wok over medium-high heat, heat oil. Add onion, pepper and zucchini; cook 2-3 minutes. Add snow peas and mushrooms; cook 2 minutes until vegetables are crisp tender but maintain texture.

8 taco-sized flour tortillas, warmed 1 package Chef’s Craft® Breaded Chicken Chunks, cooked according to package directions

spicy vinegar slaw 1 avocado, chopped fried onions 1/2 cup barbecue sauce 1/2 cup ranch dressing chopped cilantro (optional) To make spicy vinegar slaw: In medium mixing bowl, combine cabbage, carrot and jalapenos.

In separate small bowl, whisk oil, vinegar and sugar; season generously with salt and pepper.

Drizzle over coleslaw mix and stir to combine. Let sit at least 10 minutes before serving.

To make fried onions: In small skillet over medium-high heat, heat 1/2 inch oil.

In small bowl, season flour well with salt and pepper. Coat onion slices in flour mixture and shake to remove excess flour.

Fry in batches until golden brown and crisp, about 30-45 seconds per batch.

Remove to paper towel-lined plate and immediately sprinkle with salt.

Top each tortilla with cooked breaded chicken chunks, spicy vinegar slaw, chopped avocado, fried onions, barbecue sauce and ranch dressing. Garnish with cilantro, if desired.

Rules Have Changed for 1031 Property Exchanges

By Janice Gough Those planning to use a 1031 Exchange for purchasing property need to be aware of the new Tax Laws. A 1031 exchange gets its name from Section 1031 of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, which allows you to avoid paying capital gains taxes when you sell an investment property and reinvest the proceeds from the sale within certain time limits in a property or properties of like kind and equal or greater value. In a 1031 exchange, a property owner can swap an investment property for another of a like-kind. To use the tax

deferred strategy effectively, you have to buy a property of similar value to one you sell. In this way, you’ll avoid at least temporarily having to pay capital gains tax on the sale.

Many high net worth people with substantial real estate holdings were relieved to learn that the 2017 tax reform legislation did not eliminate the valuable like-kind exchange rules as they apply to real estate investments. While this continues to be the case, new complexities added by the Section 199A deduction for the qualified business income (QBI) of certain pass-through businesses could diminish the value and attractiveness of likekind exchanges under the new tax code. About 95 percent of businesses are “passthroughs,” which have their income “pass through” to their owners to be taxed under the

Clinic Shooting Leads to Renewed Calls for Gun Control

By Desert Star Staff Demands for tougher gun laws are again growing louder after last week’s deadly shooting at a Minnesota health clinic.

A key advocacy group said despite political roadblocks, the emotional pain associated with the incident added to public pressure to act.

Authorities said the suspect behind the shooting in Buffalo had a history of conflict, had threatened the facility before, and was once deemed mentally unfit to face charges.

That’s prompted questions about his having access to a gun.

Kris Brown, president of the gun control nonprofit group Brady United, said if state and federal lawmakers are to respond in a forceful way, it will be because the world saw a health-care worker killed while doing her job.

“It’s unimaginable that you’re going to work, and that

your society doesn’t protect you from known, dangerous people,” Brown asserted.

Past deadly shootings, such as Sandy Hook Elementary, failed to move the needle on federal laws.

But Brown pointed to recent polling from the Pew Research Center showing broad bi-partisan support for certain approaches, including expanded background checks.

Some state GOP lawmakers still resist the idea, saying there should more focus on mental health treatment.

Brown agreed mental health access should be a priority, but argued gun violence prevention laws need to be strengthened as well.

She noted with greater demand for mental health care during the pandemic, along with a surge in gun sales, the time to act is now.

“We really need policies in effect to decouple those risks with someone having

4 Ways Black Women Can Prioritize Self-Care for Improved Heart Health

By Desert Star Staff High blood pressure -- the leading risk factor for heart attack and stroke -continues to disproportionately affect communities of color.

Addressing this health inequity is especially important right now, as people with hypertension and serious heart conditions are at an increased risk for more severe outcomes if they acquire COVID-19.

According to the American Heart Association, the prevalence of high blood pressure among Black adults in the U.S. is among the highest in the world, with the prevalence of high blood pressure in Black women nearly 40 percent higher than white women in the U.S. While many long-standing inequities and stressors produced by structural racism have created and continue to exacerbate these conditions, there are steps individuals can take to prioritize self-care for improved blood pressure.

This is why the American Medical Association (AMA), the

AMA Foundation, Association of Black Cardiologists, American Heart Association, Minority Health Institute and National Medical Association have launched the “Release the Pressure” campaign with ESSENCE. The campaign is aimed at partnering with Black women to help improve their heart health and be part of a movement for healthy blood pressure, with a shared goal of engaging more than 300,000 Black women.

As part of the campaign, the AMA and this coalition of national health care organizations encourages Black women to take a pledge to be part of a healthy blood pressure movement at ReleaseThePressure. org. Specifically, the pledge encourages Black women to take the following four steps: 1. Set a blood pressure goal: Schedule an appointment with your physician or other health care professional, in-person or virtually, to work in partnership on understanding your

blood pressure numbers and knowing your goal for optimal blood pressure.

2. Monitor blood pressure numbers at home: Once you learn your blood pressure numbers, take and keep regular records of your blood pressure.

3. Activate a personalized wellness plan: Identify specific goals

for fitness and heart healthy eating and connect virtually with family members and friends from your “squad” to keep you on track.

4. Make regular checkins with your “squad”: Lean on your family and friends to help you achieve your heart health goals by checking in with them on a daily basis.

Pandemic Schedules May Make Kids More Cavity-Prone

According to the CDC, populations disproportionately affected by the coronavirus are also at higher risk for dental problems and oral disease. (Adobe Stock)

By Desert Star Staff Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children, and as families postpone preventive dental care due to the pandemic, experts say it’s important to maintain good

oral-health habits at home.

Dr. Kerry Dove, who runs a pediatric dental practice in Concord, said lack of a normal schedule means kids at home may be snacking throughout the day, which can lead to cavities.

She recommended brushing kids’ teeth in the morning and at night, drinking lots of water, and staying away from chewy and sugary foods like fruit snacks.

“Baby tooth decay can get really severe, really fast,”

Dove explained. “But, you know, if you’ve got a diet full of simple sugars and juice and carbohydrates, then small things can get really big, quickly.”

Dove noted one in five kids ages six to 11 have at least one untreated cavity.

The American Dental Association recommends continuing routine checkups and cleanings in the pandemic, but the World Health Organization cautioned non-emergency dental services should be avoided wherever community transmission of COVID-19 is high or uncontrolled.

Dove added dentists are obsessive about infection control, and are taking extra precautions to keep patients safe.

“Make sure you talk to your provider about your comfort level or you know, if they can move you to a private room,” Dove suggested.

“Dentists are doing a lot of things to make people feel

as safe as possible; taking temperatures, making sure everyone’s wearing masks.”

One study published last fall found fewer than 1% of dentists nationwide had tested COVID-positive, and 99% had enhanced their infection-control procedures.

Dr. Richard Gesker, Chief Dental Officer at United Healthcare, added most tooth and gum problems are preventable, and emphasized it’s important to stay in touch with your child’s dentist.

“Some individual dentists and some dental plans are making telephone and video consultations available,” Gesker observed. “But this is only an option as a starting point for care and advice, to help the patient select the best setting for them, for in-person care.”

The American Dental Association said spending on dental care dropped by 38% last year, and is expected to further dip 20% this year.

‘We will not be canceled’: Social media platform Parler Relaunches

By Desert Star Staff Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-California) has suggested a “truth commission” to tackle “racial injustice” and “white supremacy” in the US, as well as holding “far-right media” and others accountable for the US Capitol riot.

Jacobs floated her idea while appearing on CNN’s ‘Reliable Sources’ on Sunday and said the reason for this “truth commission” proposal is because “we haven’t really done the reckoning with the racial injustice and white supremacy of our past that we need to do.”

Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, according to Jacobs, was “just the start,” and more people who “incited, encouraged, or committed acts of violence” need to be held “accountable.”

As for what precisely this truth commission would look like, the California Democrat described it as “communities

all the way up to the national level having conversations about the gory and glory of our history.” Including the January 6 riot at the center of the impeachment trial, these bodies ultimately created a “common narrative of what we want our country to be.”

Jacobs also sees “far-right media” and its influence through social media to create division and violence in the country.

While Jacobs’ talk of “national conversations” and a “common narrative” did not shock CNN host Brian Stelter, social media users saw the congresswoman’s idea of a vague “commission” targeting right-wing outlets and holding people “accountable” as an Orwellian nightmare filled with thought police and authoritarian rule.

“Totalitarians on parade,” author Benjamin Weingarten tweeted in response.

Jacobs is not the

first Democrat to suggest government-backed committees that would, in one way or another, target media they deem accountable for spreading misinformation.

Rep. Alexandria OcasioCortez (D-New York) said something similar last month

when discussing her experience during the US Capitol riot.

Ocasio-Cortez revealed there have been talks among lawmakers to create “truth and reconciliation media literacy initiatives” to “rein in our media environment.”

“I do think that several

members of Congress, in some of my discussions, have brought up media literacy because that is a part of what happened here, and we’re going to have to figure out how we rein in our media environment so that you can’t just spew disinformation and misinformation,” she said.

- A new bill would make California’s aid-in-dying law accessible to more people.

Senate Bill 380, introduced on Wednesday, would remove the ten-year sunset clause from the 2015 End-of Life Option Act. State Sen. Susan Talamantes Eggman D-Stockton - a coauthor of the bill, said more than two thousand mentally sound, terminally ill Californians have received the medication so far.

“There’s been over 30

years of data from the state of Oregon that says there’s been no abuses,” said Eggman. “When oftentimes, people who actually get the prescription don’t use it, it’s just the peace of mind that comes from having it.”

The bill still requires patients to get the consent of two separate doctors, but would remove the existing 15day waiting period for people whose death is imminent.

Opponents of the bill cite moral and religious concerns about facilitating a person’s end of life.

Amanda Villegas from San Bernardino supports the law.

She said her husband, Chris Davis, endured a needlessly painful death - before he could access the law.

“He told me, ‘I don’t want to be like that; I don’t want to be a lifeless shell. I want to die with some dignity and I want to be able to say goodbye to those I love,’” said Villegas. “And people who are suffering, like my late husband Chris, should have the option to limit their excruciating pain if they so choose.”

The bill also would

require providers to give patients truthful information about medical aid-indying, or make a referral.

Tom Whaley’s wife Christine passed away from skin cancer, using a prescription under the law.

He said he thinks the waiting period should be waived, because by the time they request the medication, most patients have spent a lot of time mulling it over.

“This is a way that some people can end the interminable suffering,” said Whaley. “They’re already going

to die. This is just helping them choose how the last few days, they can spend them with love and family, in a way that is heartfelt.”

Neurosurgeon Dr. Paul Chodroff, from Lafayette, has terminal cancer. He said he got the prescription to make his own passing easier on his family.

“Since I qualified and went through the process, I have had such serenity and tranquility,” said Chodroff.

“Not for myself, but knowing that I can spare my daughter what I have seen.”
