By Pamela Price When it comes to a “bacon flight” or crisp, perfect buttermilk waffle with salt butter Cheeky’s in Palm Springs takes the lead. Comments from coast to coast reinforce this local restaurant’s enduring popularity. Two of my friends visiting from Washington, DC, requested they visit Cheeky’s for breakfast upon their desert touchdown. They recalled their last breakfast here when they ordered a Scandinavian Frittata, a mélange of potato slices, shrimp, dill, and red onion and Cheeky’s legendary World-Famous

Bacon Flight. She reminded me that on her last breakfast here, she photographed this composition, enlarged it, and had it framed for her summer cottage kitchen in Cape Cod. “The fragrance of tamarind apple cinnamon and sesame lingers on my tastebuds,” she said. Enhanced service with a wait staff always able to describe each menu item from freshly squeezed juices to breakfast ‘sides’ is educational as well as eloquent since these “classics” can rarely be found elsewhere. Safe and Sound 5 ways to reduce safety risks for young children

Photo courtesy of Getty Images By Desert Star Staff As parents, one of your top priorities is the safety and well-being of your children. With all the potential pitfalls of day-today life, however, navigating the risks can be difficult. These everyday safety tips can help you navigate everything from car seat safety to baby-proofing and safe sleep, keeping your child out of harm’s way as much as possible from birth through

his or her toddler years. Car Seat Safety • Always use a valid (typically less than 6 years old), federally approved car seat in motor vehicles. • Ensure the seat is properly installed. Refer to the instruction manual with any questions. • If you use an infant carrier, strap your child in on the floor, never a counter or tabletop.

• For at least the first two years of your child’s life, the car seat should be rear-facing. • The safest location for a car seat is in the middle of the back seat. Choking Prevention • Avoid giving your child nuts, popcorn, hard candies, hot dogs and raw fruits and vegetables, such as grapes or carrots, that may present a choking hazard. • Never prop up a

bottle and leave your baby unattended. • Inspect toys often to ensure they’re not broken and do not have small pieces that could easily become detached. • Be cautious of strings and buttons on clothing.

Baby-Proofing • Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home and in every sleeping area. • Secure cords on blinds and drapes out of reach. • Keep sharp objects, such as knives, scissors and tools, and other hazardous Safe Sleep items, like coins, beads • The safest place for and pins, in a secure place your baby to sleep is on his out of baby’s reach. or her back, which reduces • Store cleaning products the risk for Sudden Infant and medications in locked Death Syndrome (SIDS). • Avoid placing anything in cabinets. What is the best legal structure for your Business? Here are some considerations that can help you decide if it’s the right time to incorporate or set up your small Business as a limited liability company.

By Janice Gough More than 70 percent, according to the S.B.A., (Small Business Administration), are sole proprietorships, the simplest legal structure for businesses. Not only is it easy and inexpensive to set up this type of Business, but tax prep isn’t as complicated as it is with other business structures, and you keep full control over your Business and its profits. With this type of entity, there isn’t any legal distinction between you and your Business; but

beware, in our litigious society, all business earnings, losses, and liabilities are yours. Before you decide to upgrade your business structure from a sole proprietorship to an L.L.C. or corporation, there are some drawbacks to consider. They’re more expensive to set up and maintain, as there are compliance regulations and fees, and they vary depending on the structure you choose and your State. It costs money to set up and dissolve a corporation, and you may have additional recordkeeping and annual reporting requirements. If your Business is small and just starting out, those extra obligations can outweigh the advantages of incorporating. One of the most common reasons business owners upgrade their business structure is to reduce personal liability by legally separating personal and Business assets. If you have a sole proprietorship or partnership and your business experiences financial troubles or is sued, your home, vehicles, personal bank, and retirement accounts are at risk, as they may be collected on to pay down your business debts. In the same vein, a top concern with a business partnership is that you share responsibility for all business losses or debts. Even if these losses are sustained due to an action or decision made by the other partner and you had nothing to do with it, you’re still liable, and your personal

assets may be vulnerable. If you set up your Business as an L.L.C. or corporation, your Business is its own entity with its own assets; your personal assets aren’t tied to the Business and can’t be used to collect on business debts, losses, and court rulings against your Business. With a C corporation, liability protection usually extends to directors, officers, and employees as well. If your Business is just you and you are a professional service provider such as a consultant, contractor, or doctor, you may still be able to set up your company as a separate legal entity, such as through a single-member L.L.C. Each business structure handles taxes differently, and some may help you save money. For example, with a sole proprietorship, your taxes are more straightforward than with other structures. Still, you’re taxed on all your Business’s profits, not just the amount you pay yourself or withdraw for your own use, and you must pay selfemployment taxes (Social Security and Medicare taxes) on all your earnings. With a C Corp, the Business pays a corporate income tax on all profits. These profits are then taxed again at the individual’s tax rate when they’re paid to shareholders as distributions, or dividends. Even though profits are doubletaxed, the ability to split the profits between the Business and yourself as a shareholder

may lower your tax rate. With an S Corp, the Business pays you a reasonable salary and takes care of the Social Security and Medicare taxes. The remaining profit is distributed to shareholders, and you pay your individual income taxes on your portion. This option may save you some money on your Social Security and Medicare taxes, but only if your Business is making enough of a profit above your salary. Experts caution against setting artificially low wages, as the I.R.S. looks closely at these amounts). If you have an L.L.C., you can decide whether you want to be taxed as a sole proprietor, C Corp or S Corp. To determine which structure is best for your specific tax situation, you should consult your C.P.A. If the ownership of your business changes, you may need to upgrade your business structure as well. For instance, if you start out as a sole proprietor and take on a business partner, you’d need to convert to a partnership or another structure. If you start out as a partnership and decide to buy out a partner, so you have full control of the Business, you’d need to change the structure to a sole proprietorship or singlemember L.L.C. If you have a family business and want to add multiple people as shareholders, you’d need to switch the business structure to an L.L.C. or corporation.

In addition to minimizing your tax burden, the right business structure will allow you to decide how you want to accept financing if this is something you need to help your Business grow. With a sole proprietorship, your financing options are limited to those you can personally guarantee. You’ll need an excellent personal credit score to qualify for a business credit card, loan, and line of credit, and you’ll be personally responsible for them if your Business can’t meet its obligations. You may also be required to put up collateral, such as your house, against the debt. If your Business is an L.L.C., you can build your Business Credit Score, which is referred to as your Paydex score, with Dun & Bradstreet. This will open your financing to new markets to get more substantial loans, lower percentage loans, and longer loans thru S.B.A. loan companies while providing opportunities created by the access to new capital. Wrong kind of ‘energy’? Bloomberg takes on the ‘Bernie Bros’…

By Desert Star Staff Democratic candidate Mike Bloomberg has deployed a new tactic against Bernie Sanders: accuse his supporters of harassment and mean tweets. Hillary Clinton used the same strategy in 2016 and suffered a devastating loss. In little over two weeks, the race for the Democratic nomination has shifted to Bernie Sanders versus everyone else. Destroying former Vice President Joe Biden’s lead in the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries, the progressive senator from Vermont is now the frontrunner in nearly every national poll, with centrists like Biden, Pete Buttigieg, and now former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, nipping at his heels. Bloomberg’s candidacy, in particular, seems the antithesis of Sanders’. Bloomberg is a billionaire, while much of Sanders’ campaign message rails against the excesses of the super-rich. Bloomberg thrust himself into the 2020 race by spending half a billion dollars on TV ads, while Sanders touts his grassroots support from small donors. Bloomberg has never taken part in a televised debate, while Sanders has been on every stage since last year. Bloomberg didn’t even contend the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries and will sit out Nevada and South Carolina too. Sanders’ left-wing base sees Bloomberg’s entry as

a blatant attempt to “buy” the nomination. Sanders himself told a crowd in Las Vegas on Saturday that “Mayor Bloomberg, with all his money, will not create the kind of excitement and energy we need… to defeat Donald Trump.” Bloomberg responded on Monday, with a video attacking Sanders’ “angry army” of online supporters, the so-called ‘Bernie Bros.’ It presents a collection of cherrypicked abusive messages allegedly from Sanders supporters, along with some scaremongering headlines from mainstream media outlets. The video ends, puzzlingly, with a clip of Sanders himself calling for “a civil discourse.” “We need to unite to defeat Trump in November. This type of ‘energy’ is not going to get us there,” Bloomberg added in the tweet. We need to unite to defeat Trump in November. This type of “energy” is not going to get us there. — Mike Bloomberg With Bloomberg and his fellow centrists trailing Sanders in the polls, the New York billionaire is not the only candidate seeking to tar Sanders for the behavior of some of his fans. On Saturday, Biden called on Sanders to condemn the “vicious, malicious, misogynistic” rhetoric of his supporters. Sanders’ policies are popular. A majority of Americans support his proposed ‘Medicare for All’ plan, two thirds back his

proposal to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour and a majority agree with his plan to wipe student debt. Opposing such ‘populist’ policies is difficult, especially for a Wall Street-friendly politician like Bloomberg, who told his own news website in 2015 that he has “never been in favor” of a higher minimum wage, but attacking the electorate is a risky move. Just ask Hillary Clinton. As Sanders’ popularity grew during the 2016 primaries, Clinton embraced the term ‘Bernie Bros,’ using it to smear Sanders’ supporters as a whole as young male misogynists, who refused to switch sides to Team Hillary because of perceived sexism. The term was initially coined by Atlantic writer Robinson Meyer, who described the prototypical ‘Bernie Bro’ as a “white, well educated, middle-class” male who “hectors their friends” online into supporting Sanders’

“pie-in-the-sky progressive policies,” and shouts down all opposing voices. Clinton seized on the stereotype, as did establishment media. As Sanders and Clinton were locked into a dead heat in February of 2016, the Clinton campaign issued a warning to Sanders, asking him to curb the “demeaning and insulting” language of the “Bernie Bros.” Alienating the electorate was Clinton’s weapon of choice in 2016, exemplified by her infamous branding of Trump supporters as a“basket of deplorables.” In reality, there was nothing to suggest that the most “nasty and vitriolic” of Sanders’ supporters were anything but a tiny minority. Many of them, too, were women. As Clinton accused his supporters of sexism, female voters flocked to team Sanders, with women 29 and younger giving the socialist senator six times

as many votes in Iowa. After Clinton clinched the nomination in July, a large swathe of these ‘Bernie or Bust’ voters stayed at home on election day or gave Donald Trump a protest vote. Frustrated with how the Democratic party muscled Sanders out of contention, prominent Sanders supporters like a journalist and activist Cassandra Fairbanks publicly got on board the Trump train. Bloomberg’s latest stunt looks set to drive away more voters than it attracts. The ad was met with derision and a backlash on Monday, with journalist Glenn Greenwald tweeting: “That nobody – even those with $60 billion – can yet figure out a better attack on Sanders than the primitive, cheap 2016 tactic of highlighting mean tweets from random, anonymous, ostensible supporters should be highly encouraging to the Sanders campaign.”

We hope to spark their curiosity by sharing our knowledge and experience through engaging activities, which is why events like these are so important.” In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, students will learn from engineering mentors, participate in hands-on activities from flying a drone to flying a plane in a flight simulator. In Winston Salem, North Carolina, participants will get to experience super firstclass aircraft suites through a virtual and augmented reality demonstration, participate in a tour of an engineering design lab and work together in teams to design a structure that teaches them about lightweight structural design for safe impact absorption. And in Wilsonville, Oregon, students will get to see and experience

the F-35 helmet, learn about the technology behind a Head-up Display (HUD) for aircraft and participate in an engineering activity constructing circuits and LEGO machines. These are just some of the activities that will give young female students a first-hand look at the importance and impact engineering careers can have in our lives. “Young girls need strong role models and to see individuals who look like them working in STEM fields,” said Stacey MacNeil, chief communications officer for Collins Aerospace. “With over 70,000 employees around the world, 16,000 of which are engineers, we are uniquely positioned to offer these opportunities. By hosting events like Introduce a Girl to Engineering, we can engage and inspire the next generation of innovators while also working to achieve parity in the engineering workforce while also working to achieve greater diversity in the engineering workforce.”Source: PRNewswire www.desertstarweekly.com

Governor’s Trailblazing Migration Order to Hinge on Local Control By Desert Star Staff CHEYENNE, Wyo. -- Wyoming took a big first step toward blazing a new trail on managing big game migration corridors when Gov. Mark Gordon signed an executive order last week. Dan Stanton, a biologist and sportsman’s representative on the governor’s advisory group on migration, says keeping paths open for deer, elk, moose and other game to travel between summer and winter ranges helps keep herd numbers strong. “Migration corridors are the most critical piece for long term sustainability of the herds,” he states. “And anybody that likes to see the wildlife and likes to see them in abundance should pay attention to how this process plays out.” The executive order establishes how corridors are managed, starting with key routes in southwestern Wyoming, and how www.desertstarweekly.com

other routes should be designated in the future. All eyes will be on the Cowboy State as the plan is implemented, including from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. No other western state has a comprehensive migration management plan in place, and Stanton says Wyoming has an opportunity to be a national leader in protecting big game. Stanton calls the governor’s order a balanced approach, designed to meet the needs of wildlife, which draws tourist dollars to the state, alongside those of ranchers and oil and gas companies. Stanton says lessons learned in sage grouse planning, which also involved diverse stakeholders, helped lay the groundwork for the process going forward, starting at the county commissioner level. “Letting those commissioners appoint

You have to have the local buy in.” February 19, 2020

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department and Department of Transportation also announced plans to protect more of the state’s big game last week. The new Wildlife Crossing initiative aims to keep the traveling public safe by reducing

roadway collisions. Each year, some 6,000 deer, pronghorn, elk, moose, bighorn sheep and mountain goats are killed on Wyoming’s highways and interstates.

Greater Awareness Could Help Children Come Forward about Abuse

There were more reported cases of child sexual abuse in Idaho last year, but it could be a sign that awareness on the issue is working. (sewcream/Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff BOISE, Idaho -- Findings that reports of child sexual abuse in Idaho went up in 2019 have made headlines,

but advocates for child welfare say more reports could be a good sign. The Idaho Attorney General’s annual report says

there were 696 reported cases of child sexual abuse in 2019, up 103 from 2018. But Holly Whitworth, Parents as Teachers program

manager for Eastern Idaho Public Health, says a rise in reported cases doesn’t mean more cases are happening. In fact, she says reports could be rising because more people are willing to come forward and speak about abuse. “The medical community, law enforcement, judicial, faith-based congregations and service congregations -- and including our schools and educators -- they’re talking more about it and they’re receiving more training about it,” she explains. “And I think that that’s one of the reasons why you’ve seen this spike in the amount of cases.” Whitworth notes child sexual abuse is an underreported crime, meaning the 696 cases in Idaho last year are a fraction of the total number of cases that happened.

Whitworth says it’s important for adults to understand how they can prevent sexual abuse. The first step is knowing who is perpetrating it. She says in the overwhelming majority of cases, it is someone that parents or guardians of a child know. “So that tells us that parents need to remain watchful of the people that their children are spending time with, especially those that are in a position of trust,” she states. Whitworth says it’s important for adults to speak with their children about abuse and signs of abuse. She also points people toward the Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children program, a statewide effort that offers training on prevention of child sexual abuse.

Klobuchar flip-flops on immigration ahead of Nevada primary By Desert Star Staff Senator Amy Klobuchar said that English shouldn’t be the official language of the US, ahead of next week’s primary in heavily Latino-populated Nevada. However, Klobuchar sang a different tune a decade ago. Speaking at a campaign rally in Las Vegas on Friday, the three-term Minnesota senator said that she has “taken a strong position against” any legislation that would enshrine English as the US’ official language.

“I think that when you look at a state like this state, and a country like ours that is so diverse, you don’t want to have that provision in the law,” Klobuchar told the crowd. Klobuchar’s statement is typical of her Democratic competitors, who have all promised an about-face on Trump’s ‘zero tolerance’ immigration policies. Every Democratic candidate pledged in September to grant government healthcare to illegal immigrants and return to accepting at least

110,000 refugees per year, while frontrunners Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have vowed to decriminalize illicit crossing borders entirely. However, while a statement like Klobuchar’s may play well in Nevada, where around a third of residents are of Hispanic or Latino descent, it was a dramatic reversal of her own position a decade ago. Klobuchar was one of 17 Democrats to support a Republican-sponsored 2007 amendment that would

have reversed President Bill Clinton’s executive order requiring federal agencies to provide materials in languages other than English. Though the amendment passed, the bill it was attached to later died, and the US currently has no official language. “I embrace immigrants,” Klobuchar told reporters on Friday. However, during a campaign debate in 2006, the Minnesota lawmaker called for “order at the border,” and threatened to prosecute employers who

Plan Ahead for Peak Travel Seasons

By Desert Star Staff A family getaway is the perfect chance to unwind and reconnect with loved ones away from the distractions of daily life. However, peak travel times like Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekend are some of the busiest times of the year, which can mean limited options. Booking travel early not only gives you more time to get excited leading up to your trip – it gives you more time to plan, helping take some of the stress out of family vacation. “The key is to book vacation homes before traffic peaks, so you’ll find the best selection for the amount you want to pay,” said Melanie Fish, Vrbo family travel expert. “There are clear times when demand surges. Booking your stay before that surge ensures you’ll get that house with a pool right on the beach or that mountain cabin with enough beds for all the cousins.” If you’re considering one of these high travel periods for a family trip in 2020, get ahead of the curve with these tips for

advance booking dates from the travel experts at Vrbo.

Memorial Day Marking the beginning of summer, Memorial Day is an ideal time for a beach getaway. Two of the top destinations are on the shores of Alabama alongside Santa Rosa Beach in Florida’s Emerald Coast. Make travel plans by mid-April so you can soak up the sunshine and get away from it all to celebrate the long weekend. Summer Summer is the ultimate time to take a family beach vacation, and for the best selection you’ll want to make reservations before the end of April, especially if you’re considering a vacation home. Staying in a vacation home can take the stress out of a family summer vacation, particularly as extra space means extra bedrooms for the adults to relax after the kids go to bed. Top destinations with many vacation homes to choose from include Panama City Beach, Florida; Gulf

May for the best selection and rates. The Florida and Alabama coasts are popular choices for a mid-summer getaway. Labor Day Often considered the final hurrah of summer, Labor Day weekend is the perfect time to kick back and relax. A vacation home at the lake or beach can allow you to

take advantage of amenities like outdoor grills so you can enjoy one last sun-kissed meal with the family. Make plans by the end of July, especially if you’re considering a popular destination like Myrtle Beach. Find more travel tips and start planning your family getaway at vrbo. com. Family Features

HOROSCOPES ARIES

In past months as you internally initiated many projects (your spiritual task), something always hindered your progress. As this begins to ease, you realize perhaps exhaustion has set in. You wonder about your abilities, motivation and skills. They are intact. However, care for yourself as if visiting a The Golden Door – tending to body, emotions, mind and spirit, equally.

TAURUS You often provide education that illumines the minds of others along with instruction for the nurturance and sustaining of humanity’s future. You’re being impressed from higher realms on how to create a safe, secure, protected and sheltered future. The information comes bit by bit, day by day, every day, unceasingly. You could easily become exhausted. Health, rest, solitude and retreat are most important to maintain this most important work. Nourish, support and feed yourself first.

GEMINI Do you wonder often what your real tasks are in the world? Do you go from this to that, here and there, feeling impractical? Do you aspire to save the world? The first step is to realize that Gemini is like a butterfly in a field of golden poppies, sipping nectar here and there, the ambrosia containing information humanity needs. This is how

FEBRUARY 19 – 25, 2020 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES

you relate to and in the world. Dispersing truth is your primary task. There’s a door there in the garden. Can you find it?

CANCER You work well with Taurus. Water and earth complement each other. You could also get angry with Taurus. You at times think they are stubborn. However, they provide information needed now and you add to their work a nurturing setting (garden, table, food, resources). Both of you work together so others can thrive. While Taurus provides the Light, you take that Buddhic light and “build the lighted house where others can dwell.” You provide refuge.

LEO Are you concerned, disappointed or confused about finances and resources? Is there some sort of dilemma and reason for worry? Perhaps it’s just a matter of time for the hidden wealth and resources to be uncovered. The sign of saving the world (Pisces) is affecting your assets. When that occurs it’s time to offer one’s gifts, to donate, to tithe (giving to those in need). When we give to others, it is returned to us ten-fold. So we can give again.

retrograde in Pisces could make you feel like you’re in a shadow and communication isn’t understood. Leading Virgo’s nemesis, self-criticism. Don’t allow this. Lots of work in relationships may be needed. Ask yourself what are your partnership skills? And how do you love?

LIBRA So many areas of responsibility you must focus on – your day to day work and health, your fields of service, colleagues and co-workers, perhaps even a pet here and there. Along with all things practical and mundane, with these tumultuous tasks all jumbled together, comes overwork, unrest, anxiety and worry. You need a vision to get you through the coming days and nights. Envision order and organization, lots of assistance; create a collage and storyboard. And, remember to “be of love more careful than of everything.”

SCORPIO

The retrograde provides you with the needed rest and will build your strength and restore courage and confidence. Many have been feeling too hermetic to move beyond day to day concerns and comforts. This will shift VIRGO as a new creativity emerges, but not before an ending of Are you busy with new ideas things takes place. Some and goals? Do they somehow Scorpios are experiencing seem conflicting? Are you their mind transforming, feeling separations and expanding, restructuring. The differences? It’s possible you’re past appearing, then falling very serious right now. Mercury away. Bid it adieu, with love.

SAGITTARIUS Communication can become obscured, with understanding buried under overwhelming responsibility and selfprotection. Tend to co-workers with loving care and loving understanding (task of the next sub race). Realize nothing is or should or will be moving fast. So, go slowly into each day. Seek to discover, listen for and understand the values of others. They will reflect your values – especially the ones hidden from you. Careful with money. Tithe.

CAPRICORN The important consideration with Mercury retrograde is communication. It could be confusing, mysterious, and hidden by drops of clouds, by raindrops, ferns, fish and even flotsam and jetsam floating to the surface. After the retrograde, all obstacles will be removed. Ganesh, the elephant god, if prayed to, removes obstacles. The garden is where you feel the most comfort and where your interest is. You discover all of yourself there in the garden. Build a natural garden gate.

make choices based on love and care. When you extend this, harmony is created for the entire world. Remember, family and friends are more important than politics.

PISCES You gained independence these past years, expressing gifts and unique talents for the world. You now re-examine and re-assess where your gifts are needed in the future. A change of heart is beginning to occur. There’s somewhere you need to be that’s comforting and supportive. This impacts decisions and allows you to go forward where previously you feared to tread. Tend carefully to your heath in the next months. Trump Budget Called a ‘Big Step Backward’ for Great Lakes

Algal blooms can cause fish kills and produce conditions that are dangerous to humans. (smspsy/ Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff Drastic cuts to clean water programs in the Trump administration’s proposed national budget would be a big loss for the Great Lakes, according to groups that

8

advocate for water quality. The budget proposal would maintain the current level of funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative at $320 million. But according to Laura

Rubin, director the Healing Our Waters - Great Lakes Coalition, cuts proposed for other programs would undermine efforts to reduce algal blooms and invasive species, and to repair the February 19, 2020

infrastructure that keeps pollution from entering the Great Lakes in the first place. “These cuts are many and they’re drastic,” says Rubin. “Programs on the chopping block include those that support science and research, environmental justice issues, Asian carp management, to name a few.” The Coalition estimates that New York alone will need almost $54 million over the next 20 years to repair and replace crumbling drinking-water and wastewater infrastructure. Chad Lord, the Coalition’s policy director, says the president’s budget cuts funding for one program that helps communities pay for sewer upgrades and repairs by almost a half-billion dollars. “Many local and state governments are cashstrapped and depend on the federal government and its partnership with those communities to help pay

to provide essential clean water services,” says Lord. The president’s budget also would cut the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund by almost $266 million. These budget cuts follow the Trump administration’s major rollback of clean water regulations last month. Rubin says maintaining level funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is important, but it isn’t enough. “Great Lakes protection is not a partisan issue,” says Rubin. “And one budget line item cannot erase an overall budget that contains drastic cuts to essential clean water programs.” She says the Healing Our Waters - Great Lakes Coalition will be in Washington, DC, next month to urge Congress to make full funding of clean water programs a top priority.

Film Noir ‘Motherless Brooklyn’ Now on DVD

Actor/director James Norton adapted the screenplay for his latest film “Motherless Brooklyn” from Jonathan Lethem’s 1999 detective novel. In the movie, Norton portrays Lionel Essrog, a private eye with Tourette syndrome, a condition that can bring on involuntary facial tics and outbursts of speech. This is overlooked by his boss and mentor Frank Minna (Bruce Willis), who appreciates his skills and intelligence. When Minna is gunned down, Lionel is determined to find his killers even if he receives little support from Minna’s other detectives, played by Bobby Cannavale, Ethan Suplee, and Dallas Roberts. In his search for justice, Lionel comes in contact with Laura, a fair housing advocate and lawyer (Gugu MbathaRaw). At one point, they meet at a Harlem jazz club where Michael Kenneth Williams plays a trumpeter. (The music

we hear him play is actually performed by Wynton Marsalis.) Then, without warning, Lionel is roughly escorted out into the alley where he is beaten. Is he getting too close to the killers? Alec Baldwin plays Moses Randolph, a powerful master developer who wants to transform Harlem, which he considers a slum, into a beautiful residential area. To do so, he plans to force the minority residents out so he can bulldoze and rebuild. At this point, he already has the total support of the local government. He is ruthless, ambitious, and determined to let nothing stand in his way. Willem Dafoe is Baldwin’s brother, who is against Moses Randolph’s strongarmed tactics and greed. They had once been close in wanting to make New York a better place, but now Baldwin’s lust for power has destroyed their relationship. There are some scary

close encounters in the film. One of the most chilling takes place on a fire escape as Laura and Lionel run from a truly oversized villain. On the downside, Bruce Willis was out of the picture far too soon. Warner Bros.“Motherless

Brooklyn” is rated R for language throughout including some sexual references, brief drug use, and violence. Running time 2 hours, 24 minutes. “Motherless Brooklyn” is now available on DVD and Blu-ray. Special DVD

features include “Making of Edward Norton’s Methodical Process”-- A behind-thescenes look at how the writer/director/producer/star brought the prize-winning novel to life, Commentary with Director Edward Norton and deleted scenes

C E N T E R S TA G E

WITH LADY BEVERLY COHN

Stephen Sachs’ Premiere of “Human Interest Story” at The Fountain Theatre

Photo by Jenny Graham Definition of Political Theatre: Plays that deal with compelling sociopolitical themes. The use of theatre to influence public opinion on pressing socio-political issues is not a new theatrical art form. It dates as far back as ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes’ Lysistrata, a play about women who withhold sexual favors from their husbands until they agree to stop going to war. There are too many to list, but what comes to mind are playwrights William Shakespeare, Bertolt Brecht, Henrik Ibsen, and Eugene O’Neill, each of whom spoke to the socio-political condition through illustration rather than overtly identifying the problem. Some of the Broadway hits that would qualify with such a theme might include, Angels in America, The Book of MormonCabaret, Dear Evan Hansen, Hairspray, Newsies, Next to Normal, Ragtime, Rent, South Pacific, and Spring Awakening. Does Stephen Sachs’ Human Interest Story, loosely based on Meet John Doe, qualify to be in that category? Maybe yes. Maybe no. Here’s the storyline. The play begins in the office of Carl Miller, (Matt Kirkwood) editor of a newspaper, which is part of publisher Harold Cain’s (James Harper) Cainmedia Corporation. Andy Kramer, very well played by Rob Nagle, is a journalist specializing in stories about the homeless. He has a strong following, but on this day, due to cutbacks, he is fired, along with dozens of other reporters. Andy is instructed to write his last column, “My final story will be on the homeless, and I might be one of them.” Instead, he prints a letter supposedly from a homeless woman named Jane Doe, who is about to give up on living, indicating she will commit suicide on July 4th. The letter, which results in a landslide of mail from readers, prompts the cold-hearted Miller to rehire Andy and assigns him

10

the task of finding this woman. While walking through the park on the way to meet his friend for sushi, Andy comes upon an African-American homeless woman, excellently played by Tanya Alexander, holding a sign that says, “I Am Not Invisible.” She asks for a handout, and soon the two of them engage in a conversation. She finds out Andy is a newspaperman and almost demands his attention, saying that she read about Jane Doe and that she is that very same Jane Doe, which he challenges for a good reason. She shares what it’s like to be homeless and how she is treated by people, some of whom spit on her. As it turns out, this woman is highly educated and was a teacher laid off because of a lack of funding. Our journalist, desperate to get his job back, formulates a plan whereby she would come forward as Jane Doe and takes his idea back to his boss, who rehires him to write a follow-up story. Meanwhile, the crass publisher is concerned that they are dealing with an “unhinged, fuc…ng homeless woman who has not been vetted. With the avalanche of letters pouring into the paper, however, he green lights the project, which includes Jane Doe writing a weekly column on the homeless, which Andy would write for her. Jane is now “cleaned up” and is ensconced in a lovely hotel room where she takes her first bath in a long time. She poses for photos in her new clothes and by and by is identified by a school principal as Betty Frazier, a teacher from her school. In Act II, Jane has become an internationally recognized voice for the downtrodden, as well as the empowerment of women, appearing on multiple talk shows, including “Ted Talk,” “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” and “Good Morning St. Louis.” In one scene, she is interviewed by a militant host of a talk show out of Oakland, who restates just about everything

concerning the oppression of blacks. While she speaks the truth, there needs to be a more theatrical delivery rather than just listing the facts, which becomes diatribe. The play is at its strongest in some of the scenes between Andy and his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Megan, played by Aleisha Force. She is a high-powered journalist who writes for “The Bulletin.” She has a strong sex drive, which she comments, “If I were a man, my sex drive would not be an issue.” She berates Andy saying, “Guilt is the only way you feel good about yourself,” to which he replies, “I’m Jewish,” one of the very few funny lines

February 19, 2020

in the play. This is also true of the intense scenes between Andy and Jane, where she discusses her concern for her homeless friends. Although he is complicit in what could be referred to as a charade, Jane reminds him, “You see me through white tinted glasses,” telling him that her father was once a fourth-grade teacher who drilled into her over and over, “Never trust a white man.” In the meantime, the ambitious Cain is about to run for mayor and wants to use Jane as his spokesperson. He threatens her by saying, “I am not as bad as you think; I’m worse.” He has actually been stealing money from their non-profit charity to fund his campaign for mayor. How she handles it is quite interesting. Andy warns her that public opinion can turn on a dime, which it does, but not in the way you might expect. The rest of the cast, playing what amounts to mostly cardboard characters, include Richard Azurdia, and Tarina Pouncy. Performed on almost a bare stage except for a table and a few chairs, Matthew Hill’s Video Design is quite creative and is used as a backdrop to support the onstage action. The photos range from bucolic park scenes to the interior of the luxurious hotel room, to city shots, and a haunting night scene. This device overcame the lack of any

real set pieces. Other members of the excellent production team include Jennifer Edwards on lighting design, Shon LeBlanc’s costumes, and Peter Bayne’s original music and sound effects. Unlike other plays that illuminate social issues through clever storytelling, Sachs’ “Human Interest Story” sinks into diatribe much of the time by reciting the domestic and international issues with which we are dealing, from global warming to the war in Afghanistan. It is during those moments that he is on a soapbox, making the play less interesting. It’s as if his profound concerns are in search of a theatrical voice. That said, he deserves “A” for effort in trying to illuminate some of the world’s life-threatening issues. New Television Ad Domino’s latest carryout innovation comes with a new TV ad that gives a nod to every regular’s dream gathering place: “Cheers.” The ad, which begins airing today, features Norm (played by George Wendt) walking down the stairs to enter Domino’s, shocked to find out, for once, nobody knows his name. It turns out, he should have used Domino’s Pie Pass. The video features a Domino’s store built to resemble the iconic “Cheers” bar. Domino’s integrated original footage of Norm from the TV show into the current-day scene. To do it, Domino’s brought in George to do the voice acting for … well … himself, and then built the set and planned the shots for a seamless integration. Source: PRNewswire

More than 65 years after his death at the age of 29 on New Year’s Day in 1953, Williams remains among the most influential and important country music artists of all time. This splendid coffee table book – that comes in a slipcase and is bolstered by a treasure trove of audio recordings – serves as an enduring reminder that Williams classics such as “Cold Cold Heart,” “Lovesick Blues,” “I Saw the Light,” “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” and many more set a template for country music and Americana styles that live on in 2020. Information: http://www.bmg.com. Title: London, Reign Over Me Author: Stephen Tow

Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield Hardcover: 224 pages Tell me more: Author Stephen Tow’s informative “London, Reign Over Me” offers an in-depth look at the explosion of the British classic rock scene of the 1960s. While it’s easy to peg the era as simply “the ‘60s,” Tow’s probing volume provides a nuanced look at the various styles that mattered including skiffle, R&B, British blues, folk and progressive rock. A key area explored is how British musicians took American blues music and made it into something that was their own, ultimately helping to forever define what we recognize today as classic rock. Much of the history of the decade comes alive via interviews with a who’s who of rock legends: Rod Argent (The Zombies), Ian Anderson

(Jethro Tull), Dave Davies (The Kinks), Peter Frampton (Humble Pie), Carl Palmer (ELP, Asia), Roger Glover (Deep Purple) and many more. This is a must-read for fans of classic rock. Information: http://www.Rowman.com. Title: Rush: Song by Song Author: Alex E. Body Publisher: Fonthill Media Paperback: 160 pages Tell me more: While it took the establishment decades to catch on to the power and magic of Canadian rock trio Rush, diehard fans of the outfit have been championing the group since the early 1970s. The power of the band’s music is celebrated in spades on writer Alex E. Body’s “Rush: Song by Song.” I somehow missed the release of the book when it was published last summer but I wasted no time in reading the title when I discovered it earlier this month. Body really does a great job of addressing the musical layers on specific tracks, as well as details in the lyrics and how those were influenced by the times when the songs were written. Reading the book brought back a flood of memories including my high school pal Jeff introducing me to Rush via blasting “Fly By Night” while we cruised in his station wagon on Whittier Boulevard and catching the band in concert in the ‘80s, ‘90s and several times this century. Sustainable Home Upgrades for Better Health

By Desert Star Staff When you’re on a quest to create a home environment that promotes wellness, it can be difficult to know where to begin. One easy solution is to look for small changes that improve your personal wellbeing while also promoting a better environment overall. Consider these sustainable projects and changes for a healthier, happier household: Rethink window treatments. Windows can affect a home in numerous ways, both good and bad. On the upside, ambient light is a natural mood-boosting alternative to energy-hungry fixtures. Windows add character, and the right window treatments can play an essential role in a decorative scheme. In the winter, windows can also be natural

conveyors of the sun’s heat, reducing your reliance on energy. You may also be surprised to learn that the window treatments you choose to help manage light and climate can play a big role in your home’s health and sustainability. Drapes can be difficult to clean, which means they can trap dirt, dust and other allergens that tarnish air quality. Many blinds use synthetic materials, making them less than ideal earthconscious options. Your best bet is bamboo or wood treatments that are certified as eco-friendly and easy to keep clean. Lessen the laundry load. Reducing the amount of laundry you do not only saves time but is also better for the environment. Washing clothes accounts for 15-40% of the

water consumption for an average family of four, according to Home Water Works, and the annual energy consumption of typical electric clothes dryers often equals the cost of running a new energy-efficient refrigerator, clothes washer and dishwasher combined. An alternative like a heated towel rack uses less energy than a standard dryer (about the same amount of electricity as a few light bulbs). Not only does an option like an Amba heated towel rack save energy and time by reducing the frequency of washing towels, it keeps them dry and free of mold and mildew between washes. Plus, wrapping up in a warm towel can help reduce joint stiffness and muscle spasms, according to research by the Johns Hopkins

University School of Medicine. With 150 affordable mounted and free-standing models made from 100% recyclable, marine-grade stainless steel, and custom color options available, it can be easy to add a stylish accent to bathrooms, laundry rooms or mudrooms. Reduce household chemicals. It may seem that the stronger, the better is the best approach when it comes to fighting dirt and germs, but in fact, there are many negative health and environmental impacts from harsh cleaners. Opt instead for more natural formulas that deliver the same clean with fewer synthetic ingredients. Aside from cleaners, there are likely numerous other sources of potentially risky

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is making more airwaves available for new high-speed wireless services and, as a result, some over-the-air TV broadcast frequencies will change. “Some TV stations across the nation are changing frequencies to help make airwaves available to meet ever-growing consumer demand for high-speed mobile broadband services such as 5G,â€? said Jean Kiddoo, FCC incentive auction task force chair. “The channel numbers on the TV are not changing, but viewers who use a rooftop or indoor antenna need to rescan their televisions to continue receiving those FKDQQHOV 7KH SURFHVV LV WKH VDPH DV ZKHQ YLHZHUV ÂżUVW FRQQHFWHG
