The Air Museum’s annual Awards and Fundraiser Gala Celebration hosted by Joe Mantegna and Musical Entertainment by Tony Orlando Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Air Museum held its annual awards and fundraiser gala on February 15th. The celebration honors men who have made and sacrificed so much during their military careers. Many of these men have been decorated several times for their bravery. There was a large cocktail hour where guests got to mingle with the

honorees and supporters. It was a night to remember not only for the awards given but also because it was the night after a rainfall that left many roads to the Air Museum blocked which made it difficult for guests to get to the gala on time. The night started with the Colors being presented by the Desert Hot Springs Marine Corps Junior ROTC teens.

The event is always held a the Renaissance Esmeralda spa and Resort in the Emerald Ballroom. The event is presented by the H N and Frances C. Berger Foundation. There is usually a Youth Town Hall that is just before the main speaker. Our local high school teenagers always attend youth Townhall. The event is typically a speech followed by a Q & A where the kids get to ask questions that are on their minds after the speaker is done talking. This time it was Roy Juarez Jr. who was homeless as a young man and how he changed his life. One question was, How did you learn to forgive your parents, who abandoned him and he

Roy Juarez Jr.-Townhall Youth Speaker. Photo by Pat Krause answered, Parents, are human and make mistakes. His story is one that could be told by many of the youth of today, so there were a lot of important questions about that. He spoke for about half an hour and then Dana Perino came on stage. Perino said time was short so she would only answer questions from the kids, and if no one spoke up, she would call on someone which she did not have to do as there were many questions about a lot of topics. Mostly about how she got into politics etc. She said she reads continuously to keep up with the changing world. Perino was the first Republican woman White House Press Secretary. She is the best selling author, also a revered political commentator and journalist on current events and foreign policy. In her speech to the adults,

she spoke about President Trumps State of the Union Address. She was sad to see he didn’t embellish on his first statement when he said; he was redefining new standards of living. That encompassed so much, but he went no further on that statement. She spoke about her father who gave her newspapers to read in the 3rd grade. They would discuss two items at the supper table and what she liked about them. She spoke about her years as Press Secretary under President Bush. She joined Fox News and The FIVE TV shows after she left the White House. It’s a challenge to keep up with the daily happenings as things can change a lot, just in the time you take a shower. She was scared when she had to give her first news briefing, and someone told her to put on her big girl panties and do the job.

Perino told about how no one knows how hard it is to be president and the compassion President Bush showed on many occasions when no one was looking. It shows character when a person does great things when the cameras are not rolling. President Bush always took time to personally \write letters to the families of the Fallen Heroes. It’s important to stay with your principles and tell what you think. Another trait a good president must have is the ability to forgive. Leadership, Humor, Humility, Humanity are other qualities a president should have. She spoke about social media today that has been so disruptive in our political system. Parents and teachers should seek out their truth and not follow along like sheep. Kids today should learn about our government, founders, the

constitution and our country. Socialism is not the way to go in the future. She told many funny and enlightening stories about her time with President Bush and a few about her mistakes along the way. She spoke about so many topics and said being informed is essential when trying to find the truth. Fake news is rampant. She said the weight of being Commander In Chief is harder than anyone can imagine. Find your truth by being enlightened and searching. Her rise to the top in her career was not something she had envisioned but just kept learning. She touched on topics like the Meuller Investigation, the many Democratic hopefuls, Millennials, Popularity not principals in the coming elections and the Wall. Too many to speak about here.

Some Small Businesses will qualify for a Big Tax Break

By Janice Gough Small businesses may be able to receive a big tax break this year, thanks to the new rules. They also may face a big headache: figuring out whether the tax break applies to them. The problem is that a centerpiece of the legislation is a write-off for “qualified business income,” but it’s unclear whether certain activities count. That is confusing the April deadline for filing the first returns under the law approaches. Parts of the law were not well thought out. Congress was in a rush to enact the legislation

before the end of 2017 and was more concerned with big businesses than small. Essentially, a pass-through is a business that does not pay corporate income tax and includes entities like sole proprietorships, partnerships, and S-corporations. About 95% of companies in the U.S. are categorized as pass-throughs. Most small businesses are formed under one of these structures, and most are eligible for the deduction. But not all of them are. They have traditionally paid a lower tax rate than big C-corps. If they qualify, they receive a 20 percent deduction for qualified business income. First, the relatively simple part: Businesses generally can receive the full deduction if their owners are married and file jointly and their taxable income does not exceed $315,000, or half that amount for single filers. More than 90 percent of pass-through entities qualify for the deduction. If you’re a typical business owner, your net profit reported on Schedule C is going to be qualified business income. Don’t even worry about it if your income is under those amounts. Also, a partial deduction is available on incomes up to $415,000 for people who file jointly or $207,500 for single filers. The complications are mind-numbing, but it’s not just qualified business income that’s used to figure eligibility for the deduction, it’s also total taxable income. So if you make $250,000 in your business

and your spouse makes $200,000 in a salaried job, the total income on your return is $450,000. In that case, you could lose the qualified business income deduction. If you pay wages to employees, including yourself, you could be eligible to take a qualified business income deduction equal to 50 percent of those wages, even if your income exceeds the threshold. In any case, the deduction cannot be more than 20 percent of qualified business income. An alternative calculation allows real estate firms to claim a qualified business income deduction of 25 percent of wages and 2.5 percent of the amount invested in property. But that’s only available if the I.R.S. deems the enterprise an eligible business. The I.R.S. ruled that renting out property is a business for which the deduction applies, and is not just a passive investment, under certain circumstances. Separate books and bank accounts must be kept and

Recalls and Voting By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Hello Kelly, I enjoy your column and have learned so much from reading it religiously. I have 2 questions. 1: A petition to recall a board member received sufficient signatures and the recall election was scheduled. The board appointed three homeowner inspectors, each of which either circulated or signed the recall petition. Is it legal and/or ethical for them to participate in the counting of the recall ballots? #2: The recall petition called for both the recall election and the election of candidates to replace the board member if the recall is successful to occur at the same meeting. The board and management company have refused to ask for candidates and the agenda for the recall meeting says nothing about the election of candidates. Ballots containing the recall vote only have already been sent to homeowners. Isn’t

250 hours a year must be devoted to active management. There’s still more fine print. The deduction is out of bounds to anyone who has income above the threshold and runs what the law calls a “specified service trade or business.” That’s one whose main asset is the owners’ reputation and skill. The law lists several examples, including health, law, financial services, entertainment and consulting. Those businesses don’t qualify for the deduction. But for some reason, architecture and engineering do. One is whether a business engages in consulting, which disqualifies it for the deduction. Providing training courses or related services qualifies for the deduction, but providing advice and counsel, which can be part of training, constitutes consulting, in the IRS’s view. What a business puts on its invoices and how it has represented itself over the years will go a long way to determining how it’s regarded. An education

The question for pharmacies is whether owners are regarded as dispensing health care. The I.R.S. said it depended on the circumstances. As these final regulations are put into effect by tax practitioners, I am confident that there will still be a substantial number of gray areas where it comes down to anybody’s guess as to whether the activity or type of business will qualify for the deduction in the eyes of the I.R.S. I encourage entrepreneurs to use a tax professional to navigate the law generally. Janice Gough is a Financial Advisor in Palm Springs. Dear V.D.: Civil Code 5105(a) (3) protects the right of eligible member to nominate themselves, so yes, someone could show up on the date of the election and announce themselves as a “write-in” candidate. Since it appears your association allows cumulative voting, then yes, that person can vote for themselves 9 times. If he is the 9th place vote recipient, then yes, he could be elected. Your question illustrates exactly why members of associations should make sure they vote, because sometimes there is a good reason why nobody votes for a particular candidate! Kelly G. Report: NH Ranks Lowest for Seniors “Aging in Place”

According to a MetLife market survey, nursing homes are about three times as expensive for families as home-based care. (sarcifilippo/Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff CONCORD, N.H. - Most older Americans want to “age in place,” staying in their own homes, rather than moving to an assisted-living facility

or nursing home. However, according to an AARP report, New Hampshire is doing very little to help them. The report ranks the state 50th in helping older people

age in place. Specifically, New Hampshire spends a lower percentage of Medicaid dollars on home-based care than other states. Doug McNutt, advocacy

By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio’s minimum wage workers are earning 25 cents more per hour this year than last, but some lawmakers and policy analysts contend $8.55 an hour still isn’t enough. A 2006 ballot measure set Ohio’s minimum hourly wage at $6.85 and indexed it to inflation. But Michael Shields, a researcher with Policy Matters Ohio, says that doesn’t cover the cost of living for many families. His group’s latest research shows wage growth and economic

growth are out of sync. It means Ohio minimum wage workers earn 28 percent less than their counterparts in 1968 when wages were at their peak value. “In Ohio, the most common jobs – the ten jobs that employ the largest number of workers – six of those are paying a wage that’s so low that people are dependent on food aid if they’re supporting a family of three,” Shields points out. House Bill 34, introduced last week, calls for a $12 per hour wage floor in 2020, then a $1 bump each year until hitting $15 in 2023. A

similar bill introduced last year didn’t succeed. Opponents argued that it would be costly for business and result in job losses. Shields says the research is mixed, with most studies revealing the little effect on overall job numbers. “It’s meaningful when we see wages increase and employers not responding by decreasing jobs,” he states. “What that means is that low-wage workers are already producing wealth for their employers and the economy. They’re just not bargaining for it successfully to capture their share of it.”

director for AARP New Hampshire, said he thinks part of the problem is that home-care services don’t have the same clout here as do nursing facilities. “The home-care industry traditionally hasn’t been as strong politically as the nursing homes and the counties have,” he said, “because counties also run their own nursing homes, so that plays into the voice of the nursing home industry as well.” However, according to a MetLife market survey, nursing homes are about three times as expensive for families as home-based care. McNutt said Gov. Chris Sununu understands this and put a little bit of money in last year’s budget to try to increase the rates paid to home-care providers. Sununu is to deliver his budget address on Thursday.

McNutt said the Department of Health and Human Services also wants to increase state spending on home-based care. “The Department of Health and Human Services budget is requesting significantly more resources for home care,” he said. “I don’t know if that’s going to be in the governor’s budget or not, but if it is in the governor’s budget, then we’ll be supporting that kind of an increase.” The AARP report also noted that the U.S. population age 65 and older is expected to double by 2050, and the population age 85 and older is expected to triple in that same period - trends that will have a profound effect on state budgets and on families’ ability to provide and pay for care. The report is online at aarp.org.

Shields says about 1.5 million workers would directly benefit from a higher minimum wage, along with another 450,000 indirectly, as employers adjust their overall pay scales. Shields adds that increased business costs due to higher wages are minimal. For example, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank’s lowest-paid employees were given a 21 percent pay hike when the organization raised its minimum wage to $14 an hour in 2017. He says operating costs increased by just one-half of 1 percent. “When we’re looking at how this impacts organizations, how it impacts

businesses, the proportional benefit to folks who would be impacted by higher wages is much, much greater than the relative costs that employers are taking on to make this a reality,” Shields points out. The Cleveland Clinic, Nationwide, and Amazon are among Ohio companies raising hourly pay to $15. And last week, Illinois lawmakers approved a $15 minimum wage by 2024, similar to laws in California, Massachusetts and New York. Border Wall Plans Threaten Habitat of Endangered Arizona Ocelot

By Desert Star Staff DOUGLAS, Ariz. — While there are plenty of arguments over whether a wall should be built along the U.S.Mexico border, the issue has become life and death for the endangered Sonoran ocelot. Conservationists say a rare and wild ocelot was filmed by a remote sensor camera recently in an isolated area of Arizona. Robert Peters, senior representative with the Southwest office of Defenders of Wildlife, said the endangered cats range from the mountains of southeastern Arizona to northern Mexico, where most of the breeding pairs exist. “Conservationists have the dream that eventually there could be breeding populations again in the U.S.,” Peters said. “But if the border wall goes up, that’s the end of that.” According to the group

Conservation CATalyst, the recent video is the first publicly released trail camera views of an ocelot in his Arizona range. The shy cat has been seen intermittently in the region for several years. Peters said the only remaining areas where ocelots range in the U.S. are in Arizona and the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. He said ocelots use their spotted coat as camouflage when they migrate to stay clear of humans. “In particular, some of the more mountainous areas are still open, and those are typically where the cats travel because there aren’t a lot of people and there’s good cover,” he explained. “So, they tend to come up in the mountain areas.” Peters said while Sonoran ocelots could be one step

Trump declares national emergency over border crisis By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency, allowing him to build his long-promised border wall without congressional approval. Trump is also expected to sign a bill granting limited funding towards the wall. Speaking to reporters outside the White House before the signing on Friday, Trump said he will declare a national emergency, a move that will allow him to corral funding from other parts of the government to fund the US-Mexico border wall. “We’re declaring it for virtual invasion purposes,” Trump told reporters. “Drugs, traffickers and gangs.” The president is also expected to sign a spending bill that will avert a second government shutdown, but will www.desertstarweekly.com

only provide $1.3 billion towards building the wall, a fraction of the $5.6 billion requested by Trump late last year. We got so much money, I don’t know what to do with it,” he said of the bill, while stressing that the only exception was the border wall funding due to the Democrats’ position. While the bill does provide funds for port-of-entry security and drug-detection equipment, it also includes a number of concessions to Democrats. It explicitly prohibits a concrete wall, grants amnesty to illegal immigrants in the US with unaccompanied minors, bans wall construction in several national parks, and provides no funding for hiring more Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Democrats have vowed

to fight Trump’s declaration in court. While Congress could, theoretically, overturn the national emergency order, a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives and Senate would be required, which the Democrats do not have. “The order is signed. We will have a national emergency, and then we’ll be sued... and we will possibly get a bad ruling, and we’ll end up in the Supreme Court,” Trump said, anticipating the inevitable Democrat response. Trump will divert funding from several Pentagon projects, as well as a Treasury Department drug forfeiture program to pay for the wall. In total, the president expects to raise $8 billion. Leading Democrats have blasted Trump’s plans to build February 20, 2019

the wall through a national emergency. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi warned Trump that “if the president can declare an emergency on something he has created as an emergency, an illusion that he wants to convey, just think about what a president with different values can present to the American people,” before suggesting that a Democratic president could possibly declare a national emergency to tackle gun violence in future. Trump dismissed concerns that a Democrat could use the same process. “Not too many people have said that,” he said, adding that national emergency declarations have been “signed many times by past presidents.” After the signing, Pelosi and House Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said they

will oppose the declaration “in the Congress, in the Courts, and in the public.” “The President is not above the law. The Congress cannot let the President shred the Constitution,” While declaring a national emergency is not a common move by a US president, it is not exceptionally rare. Currently, 31 national emergencies are still ongoing, with one restricting trade with Iran in place since 1979. For instance, Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama, invoked his executive power to declare an emergency 10 times. Trump himself has done it three times so far. Pelosi: “This is plainly a power grab by a disappointed President, who has gone outside the bounds of the law to try to get what he failed to achieve in the constitutional legislative process.”

By Desert Star Staff MIAMI — The goal for the thousands of children in Florida’s foster care program is to find forever homes. But a new tracking system developed at the University of Miami shows the dream for many children is short-lived. Many kids don’t even unpack because of the uncertainty over how long they will stay in a foster home - which sometimes can be as little as a few hours. After combing through thousands of youth records at the Florida Department of Children and Families, Robert Latham, associate director of the university’s

Youth Law Clinic, mapped the placement path of every child in foster care since 2002. He found 80 percent of kids met national placement standards for being moved around. But he noticed troubling outcomes for the remaining 20 percent. “That captured the kind of absurdity of a kid having 35 houses throughout two years,” Latham said. “Right? I mean, who lives in 35 houses in two years? That’s not OK. “ State officials point out the tremendous trauma experienced by some children that makes it difficult for them to trust an adult. According to state data, Florida’s rate of 4.8 placements

per thousand days in foster care comes in just over the national standard of 4.2. He said thanks to federal funding; the state developed a data-tracking system to track touchpoints such as a child’s performance in school, problems with parents and other factors to identify red flags. He said that the system has been in place for about twenty years, and Latham’s program is just another step forward. “Kids with some problems

are starting to pop up a little bit earlier than the older systems that we’ve had developed, but it’s been an ongoing process,” Card said. “I think we’ve just gotten more sophisticated, a little bit better. And this last rendition is something even better. “ Both Latham and Card agree Florida’s foster-care system is overwhelmed and operating on very few resources. Latham said he’d like to see the state dig deeper to track the number of times a child is arrested, involuntarily committed or returns to foster care after adoption. He said he’d like to see a review panel formed to examine

why a child is left bouncing around from home-to-home similar to those created when a child dies in the system. “I think if we put that kind of focus and intent on this problem, I think it could be reduced,” he said. “Again, it’s certainly not OK that 19,000 kids have had 10 or more placements. That’s not OK. “ Card said the state needs to provide foster families and nonprofits with more significant resources and support. And Latham added it also comes down to having more foster families in the system, which he said gives a child better options for making their first placement the last.

By Desert Star Staff CARSON CITY, Nev. Dozens of Nevadans on all sides of the gun debate testified Tuesday in a daylong hearing before a joint session of the state Legislature on a proposal to tighten up background checks on gun sales. The new law would include background checks for private sales, and those online and at gun shows. Andrew Woods, executive director of the group Save Lives Nevada, said Senate Bill 143 would do all that, and close loopholes in the federal background-check laws. He said it follows the lead of 19 other states plus the District of Columbia. “In those states that have background checks,” he said, “they have a statistically significant decrease in the amount of women getting shot by an intimate partner, law enforcement getting

killed by handguns, as well as gun trafficking.” Voters approved background checks in the form of a ballot measure in 2016 but, at the time, Gov. Brian Sandoval and Attorney General Adam Laxalt blocked it, saying it was unenforceable. Opponents of Senate Bill 143 say it makes life difficult for law-abiding gun owners, and won’t deter black-market sales of guns to criminals. There is no word yet on when the bill will receive a vote. Current Gov. Steve Sisolak and Attorney General Aaron Ford are on record in support. The law contains exemptions for most gun transfers involving family, sport shooting and hunting buddies. Woods said the new law particularly targets online sales and those by private sellers at gun shows. “They meet up in, like, a

parking lot or they’ll just pay cash and buy a gun,” he said, “or, a lot of times outside of certain gun shows, in the parking lot, people are selling guns out of their trunks.”

The options for experiencing an amazing vacation are so plentiful, such as exploring a cruise port, eating and drinking your way around a city or simply visiting a new destination, you may find yourself struggling to narrow down the choices. By focusing first on what

type of vacation experience you would enjoy most, the details of the location may more easily fall into place. “Often, would-be vacationers get so hung up on figuring out where they want to go, they forget to consider what they’ll do when they get there,” said Matthew Phillips, director of travel for AARP Services, Inc. “It makes sense to keep location in mind when it comes to considerations like climate, but knowing what types of activities, entertainment and sights you hope to experience

By Desert Star Staff After 33 years in the car auction business “You never know who or what is going to walk in the door next,” said Keith McCormick, owner of McCormick’s Palm Springs Collector Auction. Since Palm Springs has been the home of many actors and TV personalities over the years, their cars often show up in the auctions held twice each year. The next auction in February 22-24, 2019, will be number 66, said Jason McCormick, who joined his father in business full time 19 years ago. The business, which has been family owned and operated since 1985 in Palm Springs, features up to 580 vehicles at each weekend auction. The location has grown to six acres at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Under typical balmy sunshine, cars and trucks pass through the huge auction tent for buyers and sellers from around the country and around the world. McCormick’s clients have ranged from King Edward VIII of England and his 1923 Rolls Royce to Bob Hope and his golf cart. Howard Hughes presented is 1969 Daimler limousine featuring a flush toilet built into the back seat. G. Gordon Liddy of Watergate fame had the license plate “H20 Gate” on his 1937

Rolls Royce Phantom. Other celebrities have included Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Telly Savalas, who once told McCormick: “I think a classy car auction would work in Palm Springs.” He was right. “It is rare when a celebrity shows up at the auction, but some do,” Jason McCormick said. While there have been many high-end cars and trucks at the auction, and “the trend has been moving in that direction for many years,” Jason McCormick said, “we still have something for everyone, with some cars selling in the $1,500 to $2,000 range. Some new and beginning car collectors get started at our auctions.” Each auction streams live via the Internet for three days and people who register in advance may bid for cars by phone. People tune in from across the United States, Europe and New Zealand to bid on cars. Four cameras show different views of each car as it passes through the auction tent. People bidding by telephone must register in advance and follow the same procedures as people attending the auction. Bidding requires a $30 registration fee and a “good faith deposit,” which is refunded if nothing is purchased, McCormick said. For more information about buying or selling

HOROSCOPES ARIES

It’s a most important time for Aries. Perhaps the most significant. A new self-identity is emerging. Like a lotus, with roots deep within the earth, growing into the loveliest of flowers, there is and will be over the next seven years a self-unfolding that can feel both painful and profound. Read Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself” (from Leaves of Grass). It helps identify deeply with the lostness you have felt, and the new lotus of self appearing.

TAURUS You may enter into a more poetic and/or artistic way of life. The poetic life helps to identify the sensitivities we sense and feel. With Chiron in Aries, you realize all that you do for others before tending to the self. You tend to the poor, the ill and the sick with great care and compassion. It is most important to begin to care for the self. Something may be “malingering.” More rest, sunshine, the earth, gardens and homeopathics are needed.

GEMINI Call upon friends. They love you. Some friends have fallen away or no longer available. Reach out anyway. This may prove to be difficult. However, bypass the fear and embarrassment you are feeling. Ask friends to assist you, whether for physical, emotional or psychological needs. Friends want to be

asked. Allow them into your “portal” of life, no matter what changes have taken place. Know that, under Venus, you are immortal.

CANCER It is important, like Taurus, to tend very carefully and listen to the self in terms of what needs to be healed. The messages may be very subtle. Know that there is never any failure on Earth or in Heaven. Everything you do is a success. No matter what upbringing you had, no matter the parents’ expectations or yours, everything you’ve done has been a source of light, attainment and accomplishment. You are asked to humbly realize this.

LEO What are your deepest longings and secret needs? What do you want to learn or teach? What have you never had a chance to achieve? Where do you want to travel? What people and cultures do you seek to meet? What is your religion? What are your goals? Answers to these questions allow for a potent self-healing to come forth. There is also a particular spiritual teaching from a great teacher that resonates with you. Perhaps the Buddha’s 8 Noble Paths?

VIRGO When we love more, healing takes place and there is no more karma. There are two

laws that create unity. 1. The Will to Good creates Goodwill within all that is around us. 2. Our intentions for Goodwill create Right Human Relations. These help eliminate criticism that always hurts and harms both the self and others. Virgo, ruled by Mercury, is called to think and speak with kindness at all times. Words heal or they hurt. May all your words heal.

LIBRA Tend and care for those close to you. Teach them what you know in kind and gentle ways. Allow them to teach you in return. Unconditional love transforms a relationship into something magical. It provides a renaissance and a protection for the relationship. We become more awakened to our responsibility in relationships, more grateful. We become sensitive to the hurts of those close to us. Blocks and hindrances fall away. Everything, everyone becomes valuable and sacred.

SCORPIO A healing occurs when you take care of yourself in all ways, purifying all levels – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. It is important to act as mentor for all those who encounter you. Everyone is looking to be taught. Scorpio, with its deep knowledge of both light and dark, can radiate the light of health, morality and ethics into the world. In this time of conflict, chaos and confusion, your light would be a light

that purifies the darkness, until the darkness is gone.

SAGITTARIUS You learn through lovers, love affairs, children, and all that you create. Learning for you is constant, lifelong, over lifetimes. You have many different “careers.” It looks like one, but there are many facets involved. Do you feel you haven’t succeeded in your ambitions or your creative endeavors? Do you sense you could do better or more? Is there frustration or dissatisfaction? Do you feel somewhat irrelevant? Is there a wound, a suffering or inner agony? Is there an awakening you are still waiting for?

CAPRICORN Family, tradition, roots. Did you say recently you want to begin (or continue with) the family’s genealogy? Would knowing your ancestors help you feel more relevancy in your life? Are there memories from childhood coming forth? Are you feeling a sense that home is somewhere else? About quilts. There’s a 9-part series now available on Quiltmaking as a form of art, family labor, stories, lineage, purpose and community. A picture of livingness all stitched together. I think you would like it.

issue with someone? A misunderstanding or radically different point of view. Wanting to be understood may trigger a wound. Know this, and remember it. Everyone is on their own path of development. Everyone is doing their best to understand their lives. And those to whom you belong, they listen and understand you. The rest comes later.

PISCES The other day, to a friend who couldn’t balance her monetary ins and outs, who had no idea how to organize her finances, I said to her, “Let me help you figure out your finances, balance your accounts, so you know what you have, what you can pay back, what you can save.” Chiron in the 2nd house has to do with finances and values. And Pisces is about helping others. With Chiron in the 2nd the issue is always about selfworth. Self as valuable. When we rest in this knowledge, there is security and comfort. Chiron teaches us. Host a St. Patrick’s Day Party with Style By Desert Star Staff It may be a celebration in honor of a patron saint of Ireland, but you don’t have to be Irish to join the revelry that marks each St. Patrick’s Day. This year, gather some friends for a party that brings a bit of luck o’ the Irish to all. Perfect Party Menu: It’s just not a party without a scrumptious spread of eats and drinks, and an occasion like St. Patrick’s Day makes it fun to plan your menu. From green frosted cookies to a green-hued punch, countless options are available. A buffetstyle meal allows guests to nibble as they wish and enjoy a wide range of foods. Be sure to think beyond the food itself and also consider how you can get creative in serving it. For example, a hearty stew might be served in bowls that resemble pots of gold. Or display traditional finger foods, such as slices of cucumber, on a platter in

the shape of a shamrock. Try creating a signature cocktail for the affair using a classic green liquor like Midori, sour apple schnapps or rum, or even a creme de menthe. A Theme to Celebrate: With so many prominent icons associated with the holiday, decorating is probably one of the easiest aspects of your party planning. There’s no shortage of images that scream St. Patty’s Day: shamrocks, rainbows, pots of gold, leprechauns, top hats and more. You might choose just one for your party’s theme or create an everything-is-more ensemble that celebrates all things Irish. For a more subtle approach, simply think green. Lots and lots of green. From streamers to balloons to photo booth props, if it’s green, it will fit your theme. You can use plants to add greenery in elegant ways, green table and glassware for festive dining and even green-hued lighting

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and the 2019 Oscar Race This Sunday, February 24th at 5 p.m. Pacific time, the 91st Oscar Awards Show will air on ABC TV. Who do you think will win? “Bohemian Rhapsody” is one of the nine films nominated in the Best Picture category and Rami Malek is in contention for Best Actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury, lead singer, and frontman for Queen. While not all critics have praised the film, they all agree that Malek’s performance is spot on--and oh that music. After seeing the movie, I’ve been enjoying Queen hits all over again, thanks to Alexa. As I am writing this, their music is playing in the background. The iconic group Queen was formed in London in 1970 by Mercury and young college friends Brian May, John Deacon, and Rodger Taylor. Together they created music that rocked the world. Early in his career, Mercury was in love with Mary Austin (Lucy Boynton), and he even proposed to her. They never did marry due to his bisexuality; however, they

remained lifelong friends. While it is interesting to learn about Mercury’s life, what steals the show is the music. A high point is the film’s recreation of the 1985 Live Aid Concert which serves as the film’s finale. As a result of his hedonism, drug use and homosexual relationships Mercury died of Aids in 1991 at the age of 45--but the music created by Mercury and his Queen bandmates live. “Bohemian Rhapsody,” from 20th Century Fox, is rated PG-13. Running Time: 2 hours, 14 minutes. The other films in the Best Picture category are “A Star Is Born,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “Black Panther,” “The Favourite,” “Green Book,” “Roma” and “Vice.” My hunch is the winner will be--oops, the Oscar will go to “Vice” or “Roma.” What do you think? (A bit of trivia: “Black Panther” is the first superhero film to be nominated in the Best Picture category.) Best Actor in a Leading Role: Christian Bale “Vice,” Bradley Cooper “A Star Is

Born,” Willem Dafoe ”At Eternity’s Gate,” Rami Malek “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Viggo Mortensen “Green Book.” My hunch: Christian Bale. But bear in mind that Rami Malek won the SAG award for Best Actor this year. Best Actress in a Leading Role: Yalitza Aparicio “Roma,” Glenn Close “The Good Wife,” Olivia Colman “The Favourite,” Lady Gaga “A Star Is Born,” Melissa McCarthy “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” My guess is

Glenn Close. It’s her time for an Oscar--and she won the Screen Actors Guild for her performance in “The Wife.” Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Mahershala Ali “Green Book,” Adam Driver “BlacKkKlansman,” Sam Elliot “A Star Is Born,” Richard E. Grant “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” Sam Rockwell “Vice.” Another guess, Sam Rockwell (who is a lookalike for George W. Bush) or Mahershala Ali. Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Amy

Adams “Vice,” Regina King “If Beale Street Could Talk,” Emma Stone “The Favourite,” Marina de Tavira ”Roma,” Rachel Weisz “The Favourite.” Just a hunch on this one--Amy Adams. Best Animated Feature: “Incredibles 2,” “Isle of Dogs,” “Mirai,” “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” ”Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” On this one, your guess is as good as mine--but maybe Ralph will break through.

“Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole”

Dulé Hill as Nat King Cole and Daniel J. Watts as Sammy Davis Jr. in the West Coast premiere of Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole at Geffen Playhouse. Photo by Jeff Lorch. By Lisa Lyons “Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole” is a wildly ambitious play with music that explores the talented singer’s career and the racism he struggled against throughout his life. But it takes a very dark and curious form...imagine Nat King Cole as Ebeneezer Scrooge facing the ghosts of Christmas past. Present and future, with Sammy Davis Jr. playing Jacob Marley and you’ll get an idea of the theatrical approach taken by playwrights Colman Domingo (The Scottsboro Boys, Fear the Walking Dead) and Patricia McGregor who also directs this production. The show opens with Cole (the multi-talented and surprisingly versatile Dule Hill) brooding in his dressing room as he realizes that his show is getting the ax one week before Christmas, ending his groundbreaking TV variety show - the first one hosted by

a black performer on a major network. The NBC studio is recreated to retro perfection by Clint Ramos and authentic costumes by Katherine O’Neill; the production breaks the fourth wall and includes the Geffen Playhouse audience as part of the crowd who are there to watch history. Why is the program being canceled? According to Cole’s high-strung producer (a fine-voiced Bryan Dobson) it’s unpopular with advertisers who won’t fund a program with a negro as host, especially in the South, where some stations refuse to air it. As he struggles to deal with his anger and disappointment, his old friend (or is he?) Sammy Davis Jr. appears to play Devil’s advocate, alternately encouraging and tormenting the singer about his impotent anger. Daniel J. Watts (Hamilton) mugs in the great Jerry Lewis tradition, all the while chiding

his friend for acquiescing to the network’s insistence on powdering him with “pixie dust” so his blackness is toned down

on camera. While Cole waits for his friend Peggy Lee to arrive and sing on the final show, he retires to his dressing room, and the fantastical tale of his life unfolds in dramatic flashbacks. A bizarre segment has Cole reading a perverted version of “The Night Before Christmas” featuring a family of rats who murder their youngest and warn that to kill one will make “ten more come.” A reference to lynching perhaps but not for kids. Did I mention that this show has lovely musical interludes sung to perfection by Hill (who knew?) and the supporting cast of amazing singers such as Gisela Adisa (who voices both Eartha Kitt and a young Natalie Cole). Ruby Lewis is channeling Betty Hutton and Peggy Lee and a strong chorus (the amazing Zonya Love, Brandon Ruiter, Mary-Pat Green, and young Connor Amacio Matthews). When Hill and Watts have a tap

Tram Closed Indefinitely; Crews Assess The Area

last week, the tram is closed indefinitely which is posing problems for people in town for the long holiday weekend. One family came in

throw-down, it’s ovation-worthy. The play tries to cram a lot of story into its 90 minutes running time, and it doesn’t always work. One time showing a colorblind chorus of happy interracial couples, then featuring a stagehand using a labeled “decency stick” to separate the black host from his white guest, it’s often an uncomfortable blend. But the effort is nonetheless worthwhile as it exposes a side of our great country that is a still shameful part of our cultural identity. It would be interesting to see the playwrights migrate their vision to the big screen and further explore their theme on a larger canvas. “Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole” is at the Geffen Playhouse, 10886 Le Conte Ave., in Westwood Village and has just been extended to March 24, 2019. from Mexico in hopes of experiencing the tram but were turned away at Tramway road. They plan on trying again next month. February 20, 2019

“The inspections and damage assessments are going to be going for at least the next few weeks,” Cara Youngman, Public Relations Manager of the Palm Springs Aerial Tram, said. “Once those are completed we will at least have a target.” Youngman, along with other crews and staff, took a helicopter up the mountain to assess the damage. Meanwhile, bookings, insurance, and other inconveniences all have to be sorted out. “Any closure results in loss of revenue but the most important thing for us is that everyone is safe,” Youngman said. Still, with each day that passes, more business is lost for the city. “It’s sad for us,” Joyce Kiehl, Director of Communications for the Greater Palm Springs Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, said. “No one wants

to see the tram down like that; it’s such a beautiful attraction.” Kiehl said the bureau is being proactive in informing tourists about the situation before they get to Palm Springs. “We do want people to know, yes, it’s closed right now but here are some other things you can do when you come to visit,” Kiehl said. Now, locals and tourists are backpedaling to reschedule their plans. “I’m hoping that they get it fixed as fast as they can, but I know it costs them a lot of money,” Taylor Browne, a Palm Springs resident, said. Tram managers said people with previous bookings would be refunded. As for visitors looking to hike in areas near the tram, they’re being turned away, too. The visitor’s bureau is encouraging hikers to check out other trails in the area. Source: NBC Palm Springs www.desertstarweekly.com

about their life in the military. The entertainment for the evening was award-winning iconic singer Tony Orlando. Some of his more famous songs include Tie a Yellow Ribbon, Knock Three Times and Vaya Con Dios to name just a few. He started the evening by going out into the crowd to sing and later people got up to dance tonight away. They raised more than half of

They each told about the impact it had on their lives so far and thanked all the guests for their support so they can continue in the programs. The programs are free to all the children and schools.

Photo by Pat Krause By Pamela Price The 9th Annual Matthew Varon Memorial Lunch took place at the Agua Caliente Casino Resort in Rancho Mirage on February 13th benefitting the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind, based In Jerusalem, Israel. The event chaired by Helen Varon and co-chaired by Carlos King brought their Profile in Courage honoree Dany Layani, a social worker specializing in disabled veterans services in Israel to the desert. Accompanying Dany was his loyal partner and guide dog Rolly, a black Labrador Retriever. Dany spoke to guests sharing his history with the Guide Dog Center for the Blind, with Rolly, his guide dog sitting at attention. After Dany lost his sight, he went on to pursue studies earning a degree in social work and eventually receiving an advanced degree in Islamic Fundamentalist Studies which led to his becoming an advisor in the Prime Ministers of Israel’s Office. During the last three years, Dany has been a social worker for the Organization for Disabled Veterans, with Rolly, his constant companion and guide dog at his side. Multilingual, Dany speaks French, Arabic, English, and Hebrew. Dany said that meeting Noach Braun, co-founder, and Director of the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind was a third ‘miracle’ in his life. Looking back he said the first miracle was when he survived a bomb when in a trench during the Lebanese War, leaving him blind at twenty years old. The second miracle occurred, after 25 years of blindness when his sight was restored, through surgery. However, a few months later his vision vanished. A third miracle followed when he met Noach Braun Co-Founder and Director of the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind upon he receiving his guide dog, Rolly. It all came together when Michael Leventhal Executive Director of the U.S. Headquarters for the Israel Guide Dog Center shared the stage with Dany

event promising the tenth anniversary of the Israel Guide Dog for the Blind, in 2020 would continue the commitment this event has gathered during the last

decade. Mrs. Eisenberg said the tenth anniversary would mark a milestone for this inspirational organization which brings the blind and their devoted guide dogs together

for a better life.” She was joined by committee members Karen Varon, Toby Berman, Sophia Braverman, Susan Leiman, and Sandy Epstein.

MUSIC

BY ROBERT KINSLER

Indie Heroes Unearth Great Sounds Beyond the reach of the Billboard 200 charts are a wide range of wonderful releases worth discovering by discerning music lovers. Artist: R. Stevie Moore Title: Afterlife (Bar/ None Records) You might like if you enjoy: Beck, The Kinks, Brian Wilson Tell me more: Indie hero R. Stevie Moore has followed up his stellar 2017 LP Make It Be (a collaboration with acclaimed singer-songwriter/guitarist/ producer Jason Falkner) with the fantastic “Afterlife.” The new album is a freewheeling affair that finds the Nashvillebased DIY artist exploring all of the corners of his peerless pallet including power pop, lo-fi rock, post-punk, spoken word and alternative folk. The snappy “Come My Way” finds Moore joining forces again with Falkner for a Kinks-

flavored rocker bolstered by Ariel Pink’s lead vocals. The exuberant folk nugget “The Winner,” tuneful rocker “What Should I Do With The Rest Of My Life?” art damage foray “Another Day Slips Away” and baroque rock entry “Love Is The Way To My Heart” are among the exceptional cuts on the outstanding album. The original material on “Afterlife” is weighted in favor of some of Moore’s favorite recordings made over the past 15 years; the artist has now re-recorded them with producer Irwin Chusid to give them a more fully-produced studio sound. Information: RStevieMoore.com. Artist: Gurf Morlix Title: Impossible Blue (Rootball Records) You might like if you enjoy: Sonny Landreth, Mark Knopfler, Billy F Gibbons Tell me more: Singersongwriter/guitar great Gurf

Morlix has that rare gift of letting his songs breathe. Like Mark Knopfler and Nils Lofgren, Morlix is able to use virtuoso guitar work in the service of authentic and fully-original songcraft. On the Austin, Texas-based artist’s new album “Impossible Blue” all nine terrific songs rooted in amidst Texas blues and American roots music expand beyond the mere boundaries of any genre markers thanks to lyrical lines and articulated tales that draw the listener into each track. All the more impressive is that “Impossible Blue” was produced, engineered and mixed by Morlix! The range of material extends from the lovely “2 Hearts Beating in Time” and blues-mining “Spinnin’ Planet Blues” to the wry “Sliver of Light” and moodscape of complete loss painted in “Bottom of the Musquash River.” The album closes out with “Backbeat of the Dispossessed,” a poignant

styled take on “Run Come See Jerusalem,” undeniable sing-along “When Trouble’s In My Home” and “A Beautiful Life,” and reflective heavenlooking “Sweet Hour Of Prayer” reflect Marley’s Ghost’s ability to fuse a number of authentic styles into their buoyant and exuberant approach. tribute to Morlix’s late lifelong friend and band mate, drummer Michael Bannister; that song – like the others on this great album – unfolds like an intimate conversation and the perfect listen. Information: GurfMorlix.com. Artist: Marley’s Ghost Title: Travelin’ Shoes (Sage Arts) You might like if you enjoy: Greensky Bluegrass, Old Crow Medicine Show Tell me more: The joyful and rousing spirit that shines across Marley’s Ghost’s new album “Travelin’ Shoes” is palpable, with the six-member West Coast ensemble’s stellar musicianship and incredible vocal harmonies impressing across the 12-track disc. On this wonderful set Marley’s Ghost revisits a number of traditional gospel-flavored selections, making each classic their own. The Louisiana-

Artist: Rogers & Butler Title: Diana Dors (ZIP Records) You might like if you enjoy: The Kinks, Shoes Tell me more: The debut disc from Ed Rogers and Steve Butler (the four-song EP “Diana Dors”) is sure to appeal to lovers of melodic rock and power pop. With their top-tier songwriting talents, convincing tandem lead vocals and excellent musical support of a great group of players including drummer Dennis Diken (The Smithereens) and bassist Sal Maida (Roxy Music, Sparks) the disc proves to be a solid introduction to Rogers & Butler. The infectious “Diana Dors,” instantly-catchy “Possibilities and “Seven Hour Man” and folk-oriented “Witness Tree” make an excellent case for a future full-length LP from the New York Citybased Rogers & Butler. Health Groups Question Raising Tobacco Age to 21 By Desert Star Staff RICHMOND, Va. — Bills to raise the minimum age for purchasing tobacco and nicotine vapor products from 18 to 21 sailed through Virginia’s General Assembly. But some health groups say the focus is in the wrong place. The legislation has received overwhelming support from many including Governor Ralph Northam, a pediatrician who ultimately will have to sign off on whether or not to raise the age limit. Some health groups say, while they support the overall idea, they see several missed opportunities. Ashley Bell, vice president for field advocacy with the American Heart Association, argued there isn’t enough enforcement of the current laws, and she would like to see the burden shifted to the sellers of tobacco products. “We’d like to see that the adult in the situation, the retailer, have the responsibility and the burden placed on them for enforcement of this, not that a youth be penalized if they purchase www.desertstarweekly.com

the device,” Bell said. Because of nicotine’s addictive nature, Northam has said “the less minors that put that first cigarette in their mouth, the better.” Bell agrees, but said there need to be more changes to the bill before it becomes law - including funding for education programs to help reduce youth tobacco use. Other groups such as the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network also are opposed to legislation on Northam’s desk. Bell said she thinks such an overhaul to current law should include a licensing requirement for retailers. “We would like to see that there would be some sort of retail licensure for tobacco products,” she said. “So setting up retail licensure in a state allows for a much simpler implementation of a change like this, because this is a big policy change.” Bill sponsor Republican Sen. Tommy Norment of James City said while he understands opponents’

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States, killing more than 480,000 Americans a year, according to the American Lung Association. (realworkhard/Pixabay) concerns, the requests to make the suggested changes would be difficult during this legislative session. Many health groups, including the U.S. Surgeon General’s office, have expressed concerns over the rapid rise in E-cigarette use - up by a staggering 78 percent among high school students from 2017 to 2018.

Bernie Sanders announces 2020 presidential bid By Desert Star Staff Bernie Sanders, who lost the Democratic presidential nomination to Hillary Clinton in 2016, says he will run again in 2020. The 77-year-old Vermont senator enjoys extraordinary popularity among millennials for his progressive ideas. Sanders first confirmed his plans in an interview aired on Vermont Public Radio on Monday. “I wanted to let the people of the state of Vermont know about this first,” he said. Speaking to CBS This Morning, the politician revealed that he would launch an “unprecedented” grassroots movement “to lay the groundwork for transforming the economic and political life of this country.” He promised that it would be a “very different campaign” to 2016 when the senator narrowly lost the Democratic primary to Hillary Clinton. An independent and selfdescribed democratic socialist, Sanders has consistently taken the top spots in various polls on possible and

declared Democratic Party contenders in recent weeks. His progressive platform that focused on eliminating income inequality, ‘Medicarefor-all’ healthcare, and combating climate change solidified in the 2018 midterms, with several Democratic candidates backed by him winning congressional elections. Sanders has been a vocal critic of US President Donald Trump and is seen as a strong candidate in a potential match-up against him. He blasted the president for overseeing the most extended government shutdown in US history on Friday in a speech on the Senate floor and on social media. “I think that the time is long overdue for the American people to tell this president he is not a dictator, he is not a king,” Sanders said. “He cannot, and he must not continue to threaten to shut down this government and hold hundreds of thousands of… federal

workers hostage,” Sanders said, adding that “over one million contract employees” are not likely to receive back-pay. He went on to talk about other crises affecting the nation, including the “30 million Americans who have no health insurance,” millions working for “starvation wages,” the broken criminal justice system, and climate change. He also

spoke about the urgency to change the “immigration system that does not work.” Before Sanders announced his intentions to run, he was forced to address allegations about sexual misconduct in his 2016 campaign. He enters the race in a stronger position than in 2016 when he lost the nomination to

Clinton, who the Democratic National Committee secretly supported, as was later revealed in documents published by WikiLeaks. With no support from the establishment or big donors, Sanders still won the majority in 23 states before eventually conceding and endorsing Clinton.

Women, Communities of Color Underrepresented in Renewable-Energy

Studies show startups with at least one woman performed 63 percent better than all male teams. (pxhere) By Desert Star Staff A group that funds renewable-energy projects is calling for a new focus on diversity. Funding for nonprofit organizations generally follows media coverage, but a new study from The Solutions Project, a grant-making organization, shows wide gender and racial disparities in media coverage of the renewable energy sector. Their analysis of more than 2,300 news and opinion pieces published in 2018 on renewable energy found that only 21 percent referenced women, and fewer than 10 percent referenced communities of color that are disproportionately affected by climate change. According to Project executive director Sarah Shanley Hope, that runs counter to what she

learned in business school. “Diverse teams have

far greater results than homogenous teams,” Hope

February 20, 2019

said. “Knowing that and seeing the data here, we’re missing out on solutions and leadership that is all around us.” By 2020, The Solutions Project will invest 95 percent of its resources in front-line groups headed by people of color, with at least 80 percent going to women-led organizations. Hope said front-line communities that feel the biggest impact of climate change can be great resources for solutions. She pointed to New York state’s first community solar project organized by People United for Sustainable Housing, or PUSH, in Buffalo. “They redeveloped an abandoned school in their community, turned it into affordable housing for elders,

community theater space, and it’s all solar powered,” she said. The Solutions Project is challenging other organizations to reflect the diversity of American leadership by pledging at least 10 percent of their funding to groups led by women of color. Hope added that directing funding to environmental justice communities not only helps get innovative projects off the ground, it also helps spread the word that change is possible. “Those organizations have, then, the communications capacity to bring their stories into mainstream media, because we’re all looking for those solutions,” Hope said. The Solutions Project report is available at TheSolutionsProject.org

PS Residents Trapped in Neighborhood During Storm

Vincenzo Marino Dozens of residents in a Palm Springs neighborhood are slowly recovering Friday after a Valentine’s Day storm flooded out their community. Many people were stranded for hours. On most days, Santiago Sun Canyon Estates is an idyllic community nestled in the foothills, but not yesterday. “A lot of water, a lot of debris and everybody stuck not being able to go anywhere,” said resident Janis Ballinger. “It was terrible. That’s all I can say. It was terrible,” said another resident. This morning crews using shovels and a front-loader finally cleared the main road, but on the other side of the community, the second entrance remains blocked. Efforts continue

to dig out several cars buried in feet of mud. “We were scared because the water was coming a lot, so we tried to pull the vehicles outside, but it was impossible,” said resident Elmer Perez. Perez was trying to get out to pick up his kids from school when mud and flood waters buried his truck. He was trapped, but not alone. “When I was trying to cross, one vehicle was stuck already, and I tried to cross because my kids were in school, and I stopped outside with them because they were inside the vehicle,” Perez said. “And I asked them, do you guys want to go out, and they said no, we’re scared, so we want to wait. And I said okay, I have to leave. When I tried to go

again, the truck was stuck.” One entrance to the neighborhood finally reopened, but the community’s main route into Palm Springs is still blocked. For several hundred yards

Highway 111 is destroyed. In one spot, the road completely collapsed. Furniture, tires, and debris, which floated onto the highway from the nearby community, is blocking the road. While residents of nearby

Santiago Sun Canyon Estates try to recover, one thing is for sure. They won’t soon forget Valentine’s Day 2019. Source: NBC Palm Springs

Sharing the Love Beyond Valentine’s Day By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – Although Valentine’s Day has passed, Ohioans are being encouraged to continue sharing the love. Random Acts of Kindness Day – Sunday, Feb. 17 – is celebrated by folks in Ohio and many other states. Vince Caringi is a representative with Clevelandbased RAKE, which stands for Random Acts of Kindness Everywhere. The group promotes kindness and “paying it forward” every day of the year, which Caringi explains can benefit family, friends, strangers and even people with whom you disagree. “An act of kindness allows you to have a positive shared experience with another individual now, regardless of what your prior history might have been with them,” says Caringi. “And that gives you something to build on in terms of a new type of positive, happy, healthy

connection with that person.” And he notes no random act of kindness too big or too small. Some ideas include writing a note of appreciation to a co-worker, fostering an animal in need of adoption, planting a tree or perhaps starting a fundraiser to benefit a charity. The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation promotes these ideas with online resources, including educational materials for teachers. The foundation’s Director of Digital Strategy Rachelle Stubby explains there’s a lot of power behind just one good deed. “There’s the effect of someone doing an act of kindness and the recipient of that kindness,” says Stubby. “And the same type of impact is experienced by someone who witnesses that act of kindness. A simple act of kindness that can change, at the moment, three people’s lives.” As a clinical psychologist, Caringi explains being kind

Experts say kindness stimulates “feel-good” chemicals in the brain that can improve a person’s mood and reduce stress, anxiety, and pain. (ReneeBigelow/Flickr) stimulates “feel-good” chemicals in the brain that can improve a person’s mood and reduce stress, anxiety, and pain. He adds it’s okay to promote your good deeds, too, because they might inspire others. “We know especially young people experience things

around them as what we call a ‘contagion effect,’ so they see other people doing it and they want to do it,” says Caringi. “We see a lot of examples of that being bad things, so we want to do good things. So, maybe we can make that contagious for kindness.”

5 Ways to Avoid an Energy Crash By Desert Star Staff If you start each day motivated but find your energy tends to fade throughout the day, a few simple and easyto-implement changes to your routine could make all the difference. Minor adjustments to your eating habits, exercise routine and mental attitude can help boost energy levels so you can power through the day feeling fully charged. Tune in. Take the silence out of a dull morning with some of your favorite music to help ensure you’re starting the day on a positive note. Turn on the radio while you’re showering, plug in headphones while preparing breakfast or set a “wake up and get ready” playlist on shuffle during your commute. Start with breakfast. It’s fairly common to skip breakfast if you’re in a rush to get out the door, but those few minutes you save in the morning can end up costing you as the

day wears on. That’s because breakfast quite literally breaks your overnight fast and sends signals to your body that it’s time to kick back into gear for the day. With a convenient option like the Nescafé Coffee Protein Smoothie, you can hack your morning routine so that you can get more out of your day. Made with real 100 percent Colombian Arabica coffee, oats and almond butter, this ready-todrink smoothie contains 15 grams of plant-based protein and as much caffeine as one cup of coffee to help you prepare for the day ahead. Get creative. If you typically spend your mornings focused on routine tasks, give your brain some creative freedom. Carving out time during the day for an activity you enjoy, such as sketching or coloring, watching inspirational videos, meditating or even brainstorming outside-thebox ideas for a fictional client,

can help increase productivity when you turn your focus back to the task at hand. Shake up your afternoon pick-me-up. Mornings can go by in the blink of an eye, but afternoons sometimes seem to drag. A little boost may be all you need to keep going. Reward your hard work with an option like a Nescafé Cold Whipped Latte and enjoy a perfectly indulgent afternoon treat. Give it a quick shake and the chilled blend of coffee, creamy milk and coffee or French vanilla flavors create layers of barista-inspired froth and foam to deliver a coffee-shop experience right at your desk. Prep for the next day. If you’re apt to take your work home with you, consider jotting down any end-of-day work thoughts and tasks for the following day before you leave for the night. Keeping a physical to-do list or journal can provide a starting point

for the next morning. This can help prevent forgetfulness, reduce stress and potentially aid in getting a better night’s

Actress Sunny Thompson To Be Honored with Star Next to Marilyn Monroe By Desert Star Staff Sunny Thompson is a singer/actress/ recording artist best known for her award-winning one-woman portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in the long-running play with music, “Marilyn Forever Blonde.” Sunny performed the play for a decade, more than 700 performances, from the West End in London to Auckland, New Zealand, while crisscrossing the United States and Canada many times over. Sunny finally retired the role in 2017 by saying “I can’t play 36 forever!” “I wasn’t a big Marilyn fan before I started playing her onstage,” said Sunny, “but after spending more than ten years saying her words on stage, night after night, helped me understand the difficult life she led and why so many people love her so much! Performing a one-woman play about someone so lonely and desperate to be loved showed me how lucky I am to have a husband and a family to love and support me. I feel like I’ve become incredibly close to Marilyn Monroe over the years and it’s ironic that I am getting a star on The Palm Springs Walk of Stars right

next to Marilyn. I hope she knows how much I love her!” The London Times said Sunny as Marilyn Monroe was, “Astonishing! Seldom do you see something so authentic!” The Boston Globe said Sunny was “Breathtaking! Picture Perfect!”, while the San Francisco Chronicle called Sunny’s performance “One of the greatest performances of the modern stage!” The award-winning documentary film, “Becoming Marilyn Monroe,” which follows the play from its conception to worldwide success, had its World Premiere at the American Documentary Film Festival in Palm Springs last year. The film will be screened once again at the Palm Springs Cultural Center as it is the featured attraction for Modernism Week on Saturday, February 23rd at 7:30 pm. Sunny will perform live following the screening! Special Screening! Sunny will also make a guest appearance at the Annenberg Theater on Tuesday, February 20th in Greg Schreiner’s costume spectacular, “Hollywood Revisited.” Sunny Thompson began her career in Minneapolis, traveled to New York where she performed in off-Broadway productions before moving to Spain where she had a recording career singing in English and Spanish. Her hit recording, “Te Necesito,” earned her a gold record in South America. For a few years, Sunny had her theater in Branson, Missouri and spent some years headlining in Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe and Reno where she was named “Entertainer of the Year” and her show was featured on HBO. Sunny has performed “Marilyn Forever Blonde” in Palm Springs at the Annenberg Theatre and the Indian Wells Theater in Palm Desert. She played for many years at the Frank Sinatra Celebrity Golf

O U R MISSION: Tournament opposite Kenny Rogers, Barry Manilow, and Frank Sinatra Jr. More importantly, Sunny won the Frank Sinatra

Celebrity Tournament in 2000 and had the trophy to prove it! Sunny claims she owed her golfing success to “cute outfits and a high handicap!”
