Kids against Guns

By Desert Star Staff High school students from the Washington, DC area held a ‘lie-in’ protest outside the White House, demanding gun control legislation. The protest comes after the recent school shooting in Florida, where 17 people were killed. Gathered outside the White House on Monday, activists read out the names of the victims that were gunned down at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, Florida. Students then laid down in the street outside President Donald Trump’s residence for three minutes at a time, in a

bid to highlight the relatively short amount of time it took 19-year-old alleged shooter Nikolas Cruz to kill 17 people with an AR-15 rifle. Cruz was arrested roughly 40 minutes after the attack and charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder. School students have been at the forefront of protests ever since. There was a brief scuffle between a protester and a man who brought a pro-gun sign to the rally. Otherwise, the demonstration passed without incident. “I used to feel pretty safe, but this has been happening more and more and the

The Gala honors the Best of the Best by naming 8 TOP GUN heroes from all services as recipients. The cocktail party was held in the main hangar where guests could go outside to see all the planes displayed there. The gala dinner started with the Presentation of the Colors by the Desert Hot Springs Marine Corps Junior ROTC. The National Anthem was sung with everyone standing with their hands over their hearts

singing along with the singer. Fred Bell, Managing Director, gave the welcoming speech. He said he was so amazed that the event was held in the new General Miles Hangar that just a short eight years ago was a rock-filled lot. He said the hanger was built by over 600 volunteers and that the hangar and all its contents could not have been accomplished without their hours and hours of help. He asked for applause to honor all the volunteers that gave over 80,000 hours of

people in Florida probably thought it would never be them until it was, so I don’t know if my school’s next,” one young girl told the press. “It’s certainly strange to think that children are out here, some of these children are elementary school age protesting about guns,” another protester said. “This hasn’t happened anywhere else in the world and you know the news is on and my mom tries to change channel for my little sister who is ten years old, she doesn’t want her to feel scared and unsafe or not sleep at night because she

is scared that someone with guns goanna come to her school and kill her and her friends and her teachers.” Students who survived the shooting rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas are urging children and parents to join them in a massive new protest. A group of five senior and junior students at the school, led by Cameron Kasky, appeared on several major TV networks over the weekend to drum up support for a “March for Our Lives” rally, scheduled to take place on March 24 in Washington, DC. “Every kid in this country now goes to school

wondering if this day might be their last. We live in fear,” reads the March For Our Lives mission statement. “It doesn’t have to be this way. Change is coming. And it starts now, inspired by and led by the kids who are our hope for the future. Their young voices will be heard.” Trump was not at the White House during Monday’s protest, having spent Friday visiting victims and first responders of the tragedy. He reportedly spent the rest of Presidents’ Day weekend at his Mar-a-Lago golf resort, where he asked members about gun control issues.

The most significant amount of an issue was The Day With Day With the Guide Dogs Trainers, which went for $4,200. That item also included working with a guide dog while blindfolded to understand what a guide dog is capable of. One of the most heartwarming stories was about a woman who lost her sight at age 6. She got her first guide dog at age 58 and said she felt like she was six years old again, able to run, walk and do the things she did as a child.

There are stories like this at each Guide Dog graduation. Volunteers brought Guide Dogs to the dinner. I sat at a table with a blind woman and her dog and a veteran with Post Dramatic Stress Syndrome who said his dog knows his flashbacks are coming before he does so he can control them better. They said these Guide Dogs had changed their lives completely. Over 300 guests enjoyed the concert by Lorna Luft as a separate event. Lorna is also an Author, Emmy nominated

master, a sub-association, and one for the community recreation center. They are charging me $855 each to provide the disclosure documents. Is there any way to negotiate that down to a reasonable fee. Escrow does more work and doesn’t charge that much. It should be illegal. No? J.M., Laguna Niguel Dear J.S. and J.M.: Civil Code Section 4525 lists nine disclosures which HOA members must give to prospective purchasers (there is a tenth disclosure, minutes, which purchasers can also request). Most HOAs already have seven of the nine items in place, but two items can require some extra work (notification of any unpaid assessments or fines, and a disclosure of any future assessments or increases which have been approved). Lenders may also require certain additional information from the HOA before issuing a mortgage. Management

companies normally handle this for the association, and some clerical work is required. Pursuant to Civil 4530, sellers pay the association’s fee for the documents. Civil 4530(b)(1) requires associations to charge “actual reasonable costs” for document fees. However, under the 2007 appellate case of Berryman v. Merit Property Management, “actual” cost is whatever the management charges. As to reasonableness, most HOA boards do not scrutinize or question the management’s document fees, and there is no established definition of “reasonable”. Management companies struggle with the competitive pressure to reduce base monthly management fees, and some companies make ends meet by charging fees on extra services outside of the base management responsibilities. These fees are paid by the HOA member, so most HOA boards don’t pay attention to them. While most management

companies are not greedy, one occasionally hears of companies going too far. I inquired with two management company owners about the fees you experienced. One said those fees are “outrageous” and the other described them as “excessively high.” There are several ways to save money. If a homeowner asks for advance disclosure of the document fees, Civil 4530(b) (2) requires the association use the form prescribed by Civil 4828 to separately disclose each such fee. This rarely exercised right enables sellers to order only what they need. Associations (and, by extension, their management companies) are prohibited by Civil 4530(b)(5) from bundling documents together and thereby obscuring the fee. The association board can require that management post most of the documents on the HOA’s web site, so members would need to request fewer documents. The board also

could negotiate a more reasonable document fee. If the management charges an excessive fee (the word “excessive” would be determined on specific circumstances, not any statewide general rule), the association could be sued under Civil 4540 for damages, a civil penalty of up to $500, and attorney fees. Since the association takes the hit on this if their management is greedy, perhaps boards should look a little more closely at this issue. Thanks for your question. Kelly.

By Janice Gough The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 made substantial changes to the availability of itemized deductions. Tax time is around the corner, so let’s discuss how the New tax plan impact deductions. There are two types of Deductions; Above-the- Line (before calculating Adjusted Gross Income, AGI) and Below-the-Line (after AGI is calculated). Above-the Line Itemized deductions are subtracted from adjusted gross income in arriving at taxable income; Below-the-Line deductions may be claimed after calculation of AGI, such as donations to a charity. Under prior law, taxpayers were entitled to deduct (as an itemized deduction) taxes for State, local, real and foreign property taxes, State, local personal property taxes, and State, local and foreign income taxes. The prior rules also allowed taxpayers to choose from deducting State and local Sales taxes, or, one could take State and local Income taxes, instead. The New Tax Act eliminates these deductions. Foreign real property taxes can no longer be deductible. The new law bundles all these socalled “SALT” taxes together and limits the deduction, in total, to $10,000 for both individuals and married couples ($5,000 for married taxpayers filing separate returns). The New Tax Act caps mortgage debt to $750,000, in calculating the mortgage interest deduction and these

rules will apply until Dec. 31, 2025. If purchase of a property was in place prior to Dec. 31st, 2017 and the property is purchased by April 1st, 2018. The debt will be treated as it occurred before Dec. 15th, 2017, Allowing the higher debt cap of $1,000,000. The Million Dollar cap will be reinstated Jan. 1st, 2026. The new legislation wiped out the deduction for home equity debt, including on existing loans, beginning in 2018. You can still claim it for 2017 when you file your taxes this April.) Prior to the new law, interest on up to $100,000 in home equity debt, taken to improve a home was also deductible. The 2017 Tax Act substantially changed the treatment of itemized deductions at the individual level. However, the deduction for charitable contributions remained in place. Under the legislation, the 50% AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) limitation on cash contributions to public charities and certain private foundations increased to 60%. This provision is effective for tax years beginning after December 31, 2017, and before January 1, 2026. Amounts that exceed the 60% limitation can be carried forward for five years. Individuals are no longer entitled to deduct casualty and theft loss expenses as itemized deductions, however this does not apply to businesses. An exception is made for losses that occur in federally declared disaster areas, and if casualty gains are made, whether in the disaster

area or not, the deductions cannot exceed the gains. Gambling losses can still be deducted up to the limitation but must include the cost associated with the business of gambling. The medical expense deduction is modified for tax years beginning after December 31, 2016 and ending before January 1, 2019. A more generous 7.5% floor will apply to the medical expense deduction, so that taxpayers are entitled to deduct medical expenses to the extent that the exceed 7.5% of adjusted gross income. This 7.5% threshold also applies for purposes of the alternative minimum tax. Because of the short window for using the expanded medical expense deduction, it is important to understand the expenses that qualify. In addition to obvious expenses such as health insurance premiums, medical procedures and Medicare premiums, costs for items such as medical supplies and equipment, dental and vision care and certain travel and meal expenses may be included. Contributions to HSAs and health FSAs are specifically made ineligible. IRS Publication 502 provides a

comprehensive list of items that both are and are not eligible for the medical expense deduction. The 2017 Tax Act suspends all miscellaneous itemized deductions for tax years beginning after December 31, 2017 and before January 1, 2026. This includes the deduction for tax preparation services and the deduction for expenses attributable to the trade or business of being an employee. Investment advisory fees are also no longer deductible under the new tax law. The provision for the above-the-line deduction for certain teacher’s expenses was retained. The limitation on itemized deductions that applied to certain high-income taxpayers was also suspended for tax years beginning after December 31, 2017, and before January 1, 2026.

Bill Seeks Net Neutrality for Oregon Vendors

By Desert Star Staff SALEM, Ore. — A bill in the state House aims to restore net neutrality as a priority in Oregon after the Federal Communications Commission repealed the policy late last year. House Majority Leader Jennifer Williamson said she will add a net neutrality amendment to House Bill 4155, legislation to stop internet service providers from sharing or selling customers’ personal information. But can the state implement net neutrality on its own? Opponents say the federal ruling takes precedence over state laws in this case. Williamson said she’s been careful with the language in this amendment, and that it doesn’t directly regulate internet providers.

“If you contract with the State of Oregon, you have to certify that you follow net neutral policies, so that the internet is free and open,” Williamson said. “And it’s our hope that by using the buying power of the state, we can help to ensure that Oregonians will have a free and open internet.” HB 4155 is in the House Committee on Rules. Attorneys general in 22 states, including Oregon, are suing to reverse the FCC’s decision to end net neutrality. The FCC chair has said mandating net neutrality stifles investment and innovation. Constitutional Convention Up for Debate in Kentucky

It takes 34 states to call a Constitutional Convention and 38 states to ratify an amendment. (wynpnt/ Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky might join the list of states calling for a federal Constitutional Convention, a move that some say could open up a Pandora’s box.

House Joint Resolutions 81 and 119 were recently introduced in Kentucky and call for a Constitutional Convention to limit the powers and spending of the federal government.

But Jesse Frost, a farmer from Bowling Green and a member of Kentuckians For The Commonwealth, cautions that under Article Five there are no rules or precedents to ensure a

Constitutional Convention sticks to its stated intent. “You could have a group of people going in and massively changing tax laws or adjusting certain rights, religion, freedom of press, term limits for the presidents, term limits for Congress,” Frost points out. “We really don’t know, that could totally be hyperbole, but it could at the same right be possible.” It takes 34 states to call a convention, and 38 states to ratify an amendment. Twenty-eight states already have passed resolutions calling for a convention. The Constitution can also be amended, as it has in the past, with approval of two-thirds of both houses of Congress. Proponents of a convention of states say it’s needed because Congress will never rein in its own power. But Frost questions

those motives. “It seems a little unlikely given that the people pushing it the most are conservatives who have supported a lot of the people who are currently in Congress – and that’s groups like ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council), who are supported by very conservative individuals and corporations,” Frost states. “So, it’s just a little bit hard to believe.” There are disputes among legal scholars as to whether states or Congress would control the process should a convention of states be called. Supporters contend threefourths of states’ approval of any amendment proposed would safeguard the process. But Frost counters that the Constitution puts no authority above a convention, not even the courts.

Opponents Warn Offshore-Drilling Announcement is Sign of What’s to Come By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Interior Department announced plans late Friday to hold the largest sale of oil and gas leases in U.S. history. The plans include auctioning off more than 77 million acres of offshore waters to drilling, covering coastal areas of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas - as well as parts of the Florida Gulf Coast. It excludes areas protected under a 2006 congressional moratorium, which bans drilling within 125 miles of the Florida coast until 2022. But Holly Parker, Florida

DesertSTAR

regional manager with the Surfrider Foundation, said the announcement proves the Trump administration’s willingness to allow drilling anywhere it can. “I think it does demonstrate the need to protect Florida permanently from oil and gas exploration,” Parker said. “It’s clear that this administration’s energy policy is drilling everywhere and anywhere, regardless of environment and impact in coastal communities.” Gov. Rick Scott struck a deal with the Trump administration to exclude Florida from any near-

shore drilling plans, but many question whether the deal will hold. The auction is scheduled for March 21. The Interior Department said the plan will include all available, unleased areas in federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico, including a small slice of Florida. Parker argued the current 125-mile ban off the Florida coast isn’t sufficient to protect the state. “Folks that remember the Deepwater Horizon know that that was over 150 miles away,” she said. “So, just because there is oil and gas exploration that isn’t in Florida waters February 21, 2018

doesn’t mean that that doesn’t have a potential impact on us.” Interior Department officials say advancements in technology and strict safety standards will make drilling safer. They also say a strong offshore energy

program supports tens of thousands of well-paid jobs and provides reliable energy. The public can weigh in on possible lease sales on the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management website.

There has been much speculation that Winfrey, whose media empire has garnered her a net worth of about $3 billion, could be running in the 2020 presidential elections. Trump v Oprah: President calls TV star ‘insecure’

By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump fired off a vitriolic tweet at Oprah Winfrey, calling her “insecure” and

heckling her for “biased and slanted” questions she posed during her roundtable discussion on 60 Minutes. Winfrey was moderating

a discussion aired on Sunday between 14 pro- and antiTrump voters from Grand Rapids, Michigan, that were invited back onto the program,

following up from a previous interview held six months ago. The TV star asked the audience whether or not they would vote for Trump again, what they thought about his infamous “shithole countries” comment, and if Americans felt safer now that he was in office. This didn’t sit too well with the commander-in-chief, who promptly lashed out. “Just watched a very insecure Oprah Winfrey, who at one point I knew very well, interview a panel of people on 60 Minutes. The questions were biased and slanted, the facts incorrect. Hope Oprah runs so she can be exposed and defeated just like all of the others,” he tweeted. The tweet, which was posted at 8:28pm Sunday evening, provoked a massive Twitter storm of responses

KMIR Patrick Price California lawmakers are hoping to pass a bill that would help protect California families from abusive loan companies. It’s quick money but the consequences of getting a loan could be long-lasting. For DJ Bellfair, he had no other option. “You kind of feel like you’re up against a wall,” he said. Bellfair moved from Seattle to La Quinta, needed a car immediately

and began searching. “One was a much larger down payment that i did not have at the time and otherwise it was a 24% interest. I needed the vehicle, i had to take it,” he said. The monthly payment was doable but tack on 24% interest and Bellfair was paying about $150 dollars more each month. “It’s pitted against the people, against people who are struggling families who need the extra help and no one is willing

to give it to them,” said Bellfair. Assembly member Ash Kalra is working to keep consumers protected. “Borrowers are enticed with easy approval and no credit check,” said Kalra. Some loan companies tack on triple digit interest rates leaving consumers in massive debt causing car repossessions, wage garnishment and even bankruptcy. “As a result to an unending downward spiral of debt

that traps them in a cycle of poverty and irreparable credit,” said Kalra. He introduced assembly bill 2500 which would extend California’s current interest rate cap to consumer loans between $25,00 and $10,000 dollars. For example, a $10,000-dollar loan with a 12-month repayment plan would carry a maximum interest rate of 20 percent. It’s a better alternative for moneyconscious consumers.

How to Update Your Wardrobe Without Overhauling Your Entire Closet

By Desert Star Staff Fun floral prints, pops of color and luxury materials are all making appearances

in footwear, accessories and ready-to-wear items. Fashion lovers will have the freedom to update their wardrobe by

selecting a few key pieces -- without feeling the need to overhaul their entire closets. Nichole Duck, buyer for shoe retailer Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse, is sharing her list of top essentials to update outfits, ensuring they are ontrend and ready cooler weather. • Ultra-Feminine Blouses: Women’s blouses containing classic feminine touches are fresh, fun and flirty, with updated features such as oversized ruffles, bell sleeves and pretty one-shouldered styles. Try an off-the-shoulder top with a favorite pair of frayed vintage jeans and neutral overthe-knee boots. Sky-high boots are on-trend in a big way. • Navy as a Neutral: While shades of black and tan are still a much-needed staple in every woman’s closet, other popular colors are boldly challenging the traditional neutral color palette.

Brown and navy have always been a popular color combination. To add some warmth on cool days, consider a pair of camel colored boots with a slim profile to accentuate a navy pencil skirt or shirt dress. • Versatile Prints and Embellishments: A fresh flower arrangement may not first come to mind this time of year. However, today’s apparel offerings are virtually overflowing with pretty floral patterns and designs. Other embellishments, such as lace, embroidery and iridescent accents that sparkle and shine, even during daytime, will be evident in finishing details to enhance any outfit for a variety of occasions. Try a pair of perforated cut out booties with a stacked heel to complete the look. • Velvet Crush: Designs cut from this rich fabric will be seen in a variety of gorgeous

jewel tones. The decadent material can be infused with other popular items, like pleated gold skirts, sheer materials and such footwear as a pair of effortlessly chic mules with a hint of sparkle. • Booties’ Big Moment: While more casual-inspired footwear is definitely still on trend, Duck says it’s time to make room in the closet for more booties, especially as they feature an endless variety in features. Think lace-up detail or perforated patterns – heel heights and toe shape. For more stylish ideas, visit offbroadwayshoes. com. They have styles to accommodate a range of fashionistas -- from top designers and name brands. No matter which trends fit your personal style, you can make fashion simple by updating your entire wardrobe with just a few new pieces for the season. StatePoint

What are some popular promposal tactics? Spelling “prom” with pastries, creating giant duct tape posters, decorating lockers and bedrooms, and popping the question on the jumbotron at a sporting event. Fashion First: When proms first became common, teens were encouraged to wear their “Sunday best” -- implying a nice dress or suit they already owned. Not so anymore. For girls, prom is all about the dress, and finding the perfect one at the right price is no easy task. “Seventeen Magazine” reported that girls spend $231 on average for a dress, $45 on shoes, $23 on a handbag, $32 on jewelry and $118 on hair, nails and makeup. While guys typically spend less on prom clothing and accessories, they’re still shelling out for a tuxedo, corsage and other accessories. Cut Costs, Save for College: The steep prom price tag is leading teens to look at alternatives, such as ditching typical outfits and making their own. One example is Duck Tape formal wear. Your Guide to Reducing the Prom Price Tag

By Desert Star Staff Prom is a time-honored tradition and a rite of passage for teens. Originally inspired by graduation celebrations and debutante balls, prom today is now an extravagant, defining moment in a teen’s life, bearing little resemblance to promenades of the past -- especially when it comes to cost. All of this indulgence unfortunately comes with a price tag, and prom expenses can put a large dent in your wallet. Teens are spending nearly $640 on prom hair and makeup, outfits, tickets and rides, according to Yahoo Style’s “2017 Prom Across America” survey -- and that doesn’t take into consideration any pre-prom expenses, such as the promposal, which, according to Visa’s annual prom spending survey, adds another $324! Now in its 18th year, the contest will once again help offset the skyrocketing costs of college by helping teens save on prom and by awarding creative makers for their unique promwear designs, offering two individual $10,000 Grand Prizes: one in the Dress Category and one in the Tux Category, totaling $20,000. Hair, makeup and other accessories can cost more than $200, so skip the salon and opt for online tutorials for hair and makeup inspiration. Also, DIYing accessories, such as jewelry, a clutch or flowers (i.e. Duck Tape roses), can add a personal touch, and keep money in your wallet. British Snowboarder Jamie Barrow breaks Guinness World Record

By Desert Star Staff MODENA, Italy, -- Britain’s fastest snowboarder Jamie Barrow has broken his own Guinness World Record, clocking a new fastest speed on a snowboard while being towed by a vehicle on the frozen lakes of St Moritz. Barrow previously broke the same record in February 2016, when he was clocked at a speed of 99.87 km/h while being towed behind a car across the same frozen lake in St Moritz. Despite breaking the record in 2016, Barrow was always confident that an even greater speed was possible, due to the track in 2016 being slightly shorter than originally planned and the soft snow not allowing the grip needed. This time he returned to the lake with a powerful Maserati Levante SUV, a much faster car than the one used in his last record attempt, fitted with Pirelli Scorpion Winter tires. The special studded tires have 474 studs per tire and are 4 mm long to allow the best grip possible on the frozen lake. With the record attempt

taking place on a frozen lake, safety and preparation were a major factor when planning the project. The track was closed, fenced off and pistebashers groomed the snow especially for the Guinness World Record attempt. Strict criteria had to be met for the record to meet Guinness World Record guidelines. These included completing a timed run in both directions with specialist recording equipment, set at 100m by a Guinness World Records official. With 400m needed either side so that the Maserati Levante could accelerate and slow down safely on the snow, a total run of approximately 900m was prepared. On the morning of Monday 19th February, the very first out run was recorded at 151.57 km/h. Due to the Guinness World Record stipulations; a return run back was recorded at 147.72 km/h. The two runs were then averaged to give the final Guinness World Record speed of 149.65 km/h. About his newly set Guinness World Record, Jamie

The life and work of Johannes Vermeer is explored

“Blade Runner 2049” in the PBS documentary “Vermeer Beyond Time” by French filmmaker JeanPierre Cottet who adapts an imaginative and sensitive

approach to the Dutch artist’s life, his family and his conversion to Catholicism. Today Vermeer’s paintings are respected and loved, but that unfortunately was not the case during his all too brief lifetime. In 1675, overwhelmed by poverty and physically weakened, he dies at the age of 43. His paintings are sold to cover his debts and he disappears from memory. Then 200 years later his works are rediscovered and his popularity soars. Today he ranks as one of the finest Dutch painters, which is a well deserved honor. The documentary is narrated by Steve Martin and is approximately 90 minutes in length.

A Trio of Terrific Titles There is a trio of wonderful new releases from decidedlydifferent corners of the sonic universe to recommend. A concert film featuring Van Morrison, an orchestral album from legendary Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks and a new studio set from bluesman Tinsley Ellis would make welcome additions to any music lover’s library. Artist: Van Morrison Title: In Concert (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: Van Morrison Tell me more: The newlyreleased “In Concert” features a memorable Van Morrison concert filmed at the BBC Radio Theatre in 2016. The 76-minute concert includes a few choice hits (including an animated “Wild Night” and jazzy “Brown Eyed Girl,” the latter bolstered by Van the Man’s sax playing), but the larger joy of this fastmoving performance is in the choice of deep cuts. The gorgeous “Every Time I See A River” (a newer track from his 2016 LP “Keep Me Singing”), spiritual “Whenever God

Shines His Light,” yearning ballad “Carrying A Torch” (enhanced by Dana Masters’ backing vocals) and the setending “In The Garden” are among the winning numbers featured during the inviting show. Future is Female: NC Women File for Candidacy This Week By Desert Star Staff Record numbers of women are expected to file this week in North Carolina to get their names on the ballot in national, state or local elections. Monday was the first day for candidates to file for this year’s election, and while the numbers are still coming in, there is anecdotal evidence that the face of North Carolina’s ballot will be markedly different in this year’s election. Lillian’s List is a North Carolina organization that recruits interested women and helps them identify leadership opportunities and districts. Board chair Pamela Hutson says since the last presidential election, they’ve had more women express interest than in the previous 10 years. “It’s just been incredible for us to see the number of women who have come to us in 2017,” Hutson says. “I know there was a wave that filed, and I know there are many more to come, I can just say that much.” This year, according to the Center for American

Women and Politics, women hold just shy of 20 percent of the 535 seats in Congress, although they make up more than half the U.S. population. Just hours before local election board offices opened, Democrats and voting-rights groups were still seeking changes to more than a dozen state House districts in the Raleigh and Charlotte areas. That motion was denied. In the last 20 years, Hutson says Lillian’s List has trained 665 candidates for office in North Carolina. She notes the training goes beyond securing equal representation, and extends to contributing ideals that the group believes have otherwise been missing from government leadership. “It’s our view that having women in the Legislature changes the nature of the conversation, changes the dynamics, changes how laws get made,” she says. The deadline in North Carolina to file for the U.S. House, state elections and most county offices is Feb. 28.

The MozART Group at McCallum Theatre

By Desert Star Staff Palm Desert, CA-Through the generosity of Gary and Phyllis Schahet, the McCallum Theatre presents the MozART Group on Monday, March 12, at 8:00 pm. A string quartet that makes you laugh? It’s true! The four gentlemen of MozART Group do the impossible, combining classical music and comedy into a unique experience for young and old. Surprising and funny, the MozART Group is an original fountain of noble craziness. Not always dangerous, but still hilarious. Without a doubt unique! Made up of musicians from prestigious academies of

music in Warsaw and Łódz, the MozART Group sells out stadiums in Europe and are YouTube sensations with more than 10 million hits. Their performances not only rival the comedic brilliance of the late, great Victor Borge, but they are all first-class musicians, each funny, silly and sweet in their way. All four gentlemen of the MozART Group are welleducated instrumentalists, but they decided to play classical music humorously. The MozART Group created a worldwide unique musical cabaret, where the music, not the words, is the source of joy and laughter. Take a

classical composition as canvas, analyze its structure and theme, surround it with musical associations, brilliant, outstanding ideas and, while listening to the final product, the listener is continuously surprised, amazed, laughing and moved to tears. The musicians of the MozART Group have been playing together since 1995. In the beginning, they presented short musical jokes on Canal Plus Television and gave their first debut in 1997 at the PAKA competition of young Polish cabarets in Krakow. That same year, they presented their first cabaret program entitled “Mozart’s Still Alive”

and since then, has given concerts in throughout Europe, Canada, the U.S., and Asia. MozART has received prestigious prizes like the Grand Prix of the XVIII Festival of Satire and Comedy in Lidzbark; “Pingwin z brazu” (the Bronze Penguin). The award is given by the cabaret community of Zielona Gora, an informal capitol of Polish cabaret, and two Golden Troughs at the Ryjek Festival in Rybnik/Poland. In 2010, MozART was awarded a special prize from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Poland for outstanding achievements and 15 years on stage. The 31st European Humor Festival GAGY in Slovakia awarded MozART with the 2011 Grand Prix. In 2013, they were awarded all three main prizes at the 10th Festival des Artes Burlesques in St. Etienne, France. The first show of the group, in which they took Antonio Vivaldi as their patron, was entitled “The Four Seasons à la MozART Group.” With their CD Creatures, each of the seasons begins the same way as Vivaldi’s compositions. Later on, however, it runs freely in the direction of various world songs about spring, summer, autumn, and winter. This show provides the listener with over 70 minutes of

he was spending at least four days in Palm Springs to make this a ‘marathon art weekend.’ Eighty-five premier national and international dealers featuring all design movements of the 20th century were exhibited at the Modernism Show and Sale while at the Convention Center’s adjacent

space, Art Palm Springs brought 84 art galleries together for the event’s 7th edition, according to Donna Davies, Vice President of Art Group Urban Exposures. Catching the attention of a steady flow of jewelry fans at The Modernism Show was a retrospective exhibition of rare William de Lillo and Robert F.

He pulled out all the stops with the dramatic collection of dazzling necklaces and bracelets. Mr. King said the designers had “many celebrity status clients and delivered jewelry in the Palm Springs area to Liberace, Mrs. William Randolph Hearst, Barbara Sinatra, and Mrs. Bob Hope, often staying with the Hopes at their Southridge residence in Palm Springs. Just steps away the Vintage Poster, specializing in original vintage European advertising posters and Poster Passion, specializing in reproductions of antique posters lured art fans nonstop with signs from TWA and Air France side by side with recruitment posters for the Navy, Air Force and Marines. sophisticated, perfectly arranged, sublime fun! In 2015, the MozART Group celebrated its 20th anniversary with a gala show at the Teatr Polski in Warsaw. Twenty years on stage is a good reason to show the audience the funny and exciting stories which happened during this time. In 2017, the quartet revisited over 20 countries including France, Switzerland, Czech Republic and Germany. Just for Laughs, the world’s biggest and most crucial comedy festival featured the quartet with a total of twenty shows in Montreal. “We exist despite the sober formality of great concert halls, despite the boredom of classical musicians’ life, despite fanatic lovers of classical music, despite fans of rock, rap or pop who are afraid of classical music. We treat our Muse with humorous irony, and we’re sure, she will have nothing against it!” - MozART group Tickets for this performance are $67, $47, $37 and $27. Tickets are available at the Theatre’s website at www. mccallumtheatre.com or by calling the McCallum Theatre Box Office at (760) 340ARTS. The Maria Elena Kravetz Gallery from Cordoba, Argentina was a show stopper with several canine-inspired mosaic sculptures by Natasha Dikareva turning the heads of dog lovers in their tracks. Around the corner book, lovers lingered over the remarkably detailed paintings of bookshelves displaying classic “coffee table” books and more ranging from designers and artists from Dior to David Hockney. The Host Committee for this year’s Art Palm Springs featured Harold Matzner, Arlene Schnitzer, Jordan Schnitzer, Steven Biller, Michael Childers Richard Kip Serafin, and Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon. Among the Cultural Partners were Desert X, Modernism Week and the Beatrice Woods Center for the Arts. A diverse, dramatic array of art, accent pieces, and jewelry spanned both the Modernism and Art Palm Springs exhibits. “There was something for everyone’s taste,” said Timmy Woods of Los Angeles who is a perennial fan of both shows. Plant the right tree in the right place this spring

By Desert Star Staff ATLANTA, -- Georgia Power works every day to keep reliability high across the state and, with Georgia Arbor Day marking the start of the spring planting season this month, the company encourages customers to make the right landscaping choices around homes and businesses. Planting the right tree in the right place may help decrease the likelihood of a power outage in the event of a storm while ensuring that power lines are clear of trees and brush provides also easier access to the company’s power lines, which means quicker power restoration after a storm. Georgia Power recommends dividing your yard into three specific planting zones – the Tall Zone (trees 60 feet or higher), the Medium Zone (trees no taller than 40 feet), and the Low Zone (trees and shrubs no taller than 25 feet). Trees and shrubs in the Low Zone may be planted 15 feet from electric utility wires. In addition to helping customers select the right

trees to plant, Georgia Power maintains 160,000-line acres and 24,000 miles of transmission and distribution lines under guidelines set by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC).

These maintenance activities are an essential piece of the company’s commitment to ensuring reliable service for 2.5 million customers in every corner of the state. Georgia Power also reminds customers of the importance of calling 811

before they dig. The company works every day with Georgia 811 to ensure that projects are safe and comply with the “Georgia Dig Law.” The law requires that workers contact Georgia 811 before digging to have all underground utility lines (such as power,

communications, gas and water lines) clearly marked. Georgia residents can call the free service at 8-1-1 or (800)-282-7411 or submit an electronic request at www.Georgia811.com.

Ukrainians, also numerous and unlike Poles operating in organized formations supported by part of the Ukrainian society, which makes their crimes even greater,” the statement added. The Jewish group then advised the Polish authorities to “refrain from further ill-considered statements, which deny the historical truth, and not only embarrass them, but also institutions they represent.” Morawiecki and his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, discussed the issue during a phone call on Sunday. According to Netanyahu, he told the Polish Prime Minister that “such a comparison is false…The Holocaust was designed to destroy the entire Jewish people and not any other peoples.” Poland “is trying to say that there were cases in which Jews collaborated with the Nazis, but one cannot compare numerically, and the circumstances are entirely different as well,” the head of the Israeli government said as cited by Haaretz. Such controversial statements have been made by the Polish authorities because they “must be sensing that they are being blamed for the Holocaust,” he added. Morawiecki made the controversial statement while he was answering a question from an Israeli reporter regarding the new

Polish law, which criminalized blaming Poles for Nazi crimes committed on Polish soil and outlawed the phrase “Polish death camps.” The legislation led to a war of words between Tel Aviv and Warsaw, and the planned Israeli visit by the head of the Polish National Security Council, Pawel Soloch, was suspended in early February. In response to the Polish initiative, a group of Israeli parliamentarians demanded the country’s Holocaust denial law be amended in order to outlaw efforts to diminish cooperation with Nazis. Last week, Andrzej Zybertowicz, an adviser to Poland’s president, added fuel to the fire by saying that Israel’s furious reaction to the legislation was explained by the “feeling of shame at the passivity of the Jews during the Holocaust.” Israel is “clearly fighting to keep the monopoly on the Holocaust,” he told the Polska Times newspaper. On Sunday, Swastikas and anti-Polish slogans were painted on the Polish embassy in Israel. An estimated 6 million Jews, around two-thirds of the Jewish population of Europe, were killed by the Nazis, including at the Auschwitz, Sobibor and other death camps, which operated on the territory of occupied Poland from 1939 to 1945.

Polish Jews say PM’s Holocaust complicity comments ‘cross line of common sense’

His statements caused outrage in Israel and Jewish communities

across the globe. On Monday, the Union of Jewish Communities in Poland released a statement that said Morawiecki’s comments “cross the line of common sense.” Their statement acknowledged that there were “Jewish criminals, Jewish Police in the Ghettos,” but stressed that the head of the government had no right to mention them with the other perpetrators. “Unlike Germans, Ukrainians or Poles, Jews acted under a threat of direct terror, in a situation similar to that of the prisoners of concentration camps,” the Union said. “Unlike the Ghetto Police, Polish policemen were not threatened with

death of their family for refusing to deliver Jews to the Germans. It is the sign of a moral blindness and historical ignorance to put those, who acted under the greatest duress in one sentence with Polish perpetrators or Ukrainian and German criminals.” The Poles participated in the Holocaust in such numbers that can’t be considered “individual cases,” the union asserted. However, it specified that “the Polish perpetrators were not ‘the same’ as German perpetrators – Holocaust was a crime of a German State in which, unfortunately, Poles took part.” “There were also February 21, 2018

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. Immigrant-Rights Activists See Turning Point for All Americans

By Mark Hedin, Ethnic Media Services SAN FRANCISCO – Warning that the country is heading down a whitenationalist, nativist path, four immigrant-rights advocates issued a call to action last week just hours before the U.S. Senate rejected all four proposals to change U.S. immigration policy, and a second federal court found the president’s “Muslim ban” unconstitutional. The advocates spoke at a national telebriefing for ethnic media sponsored by Ready California, a collaborative cross-sector effort led by the Immigrant Legal Resource Center. “We’ve all learned to expect the unexpected,” said Sameera Hafiz, an attorney and ILRC senior policy strategist in Washington, D.C. “The reason we’re here is because of Trump’s decision in September to rescind the DACA program and throw the lives of close to 800,000 young people into chaos and uncertainty.” “But, while the Senate was ostensibly debating the future of the DACA program,” Hafiz argued, “the reality is that any DACA proposals go hand in hand with eliminating

the diversity visa program, severely curtailing the family immigration program and expansive border enforcement measures – far beyond what we think about when we think about border security.” “While we’ve been focused in D.C. on the legislative side, we’ve been distracted from what the administration is already doing,” Hafiz continued, citing attacks on jurisdictions with sanctuary policies and other enforcement actions against Dreamers, mothers and activists. Angelica Salas, director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), agreed that what is underway is an attack on legal immigration itself which she called “a white nationalist agenda, [whereby] certain individuals are not qualified to come into the United States based on their country of birth and their religion.” On average, Salas noted, “Our clients being deported from Los Angeles had been in the country more than 25 years. With the crippling of various legal channels like the Central American minors program, the separation of children from parents, the ending of diversity visas, the

list goes on,” she said. “We’re destroying people’s lives.” “This is not just about the immigrant community anymore,” she continued. “It’s about what kind of country we want and who we are, as Americans.” Zahir Billoo is the executive director of the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and a civilrights attorney. She hailed the decision by the Fourth Circuit which joined a chorus of courts across the country who have said that the Muslim ban is unconstitutional. Nevertheless, she noted, “Whether you are from Iran or Somalia, it does not matter what your story is, you cannot come to the US.” Billoo quoted a Georgetown University estimate that 60,000 people had been impacted in their efforts to get an education or see their families. “We’re optimistic,” Billoo said, but cautioned that what’s legal doesn’t always align with what’s moral. “The court in the past has allowed many unjust things, such as the Japanese internment.” Adoubou Traore, director of the African Advocacy Network, which provides legal counsel

for immigrants of the African diaspora, highlighted the dramatic growth of the African immigrant community, from 816,000 in 1980 to more than 4 million in 2016. Largely faceless and voiceless, this population has borne the brunt of every new restrictive immigration measure, from the Muslim ban to the removal of Temporary Protective Status (TPS). As immigrants and as Blacks, said Traore, “We are the only group that has been named racially, and coming from countries that have been named in ways that I don’t even want to repeat, but we all heard it.” Asked about the future of the immigrant rights movement, Salas noted the “tremendous mobilization

by immigrant youth. This will only increase as people mobilize around the March 5 Congressional deadline for a solution on DACA.” “But this is a call to the broader immigrant community and Americans in general,” Salas emphasized. “We need to stand up not just to be in solidarity with immigrants and refugees, and our brothers and sisters from the Muslim community,” she added. “We need to stand up as Americans – as a country – saying this is not who we are or what our values are. I think this is what’s missing.” The broadcast version of this story was produced by Stephanie Carson for California News Service in collaboration with Ethnic Media Services.

Family Losses Everything in Two House Fires

KMIR Max Rodriguez Desert Hot Springs, CA - A single mother and her five young children were left with nowhere to go after two separate house fires took everything from them. Kiara Zarate said the fires happened within a month period. She remembers the dates of the fires clearly; first

one happened just a week before giving birth, while the second fire happened on Saturday, just three weeks after welcoming her newborn. Zarate said, “I don’t want to burden my kids with the problems, but they know what happened and they know that it is going to get better.” She moved-in with her

mother and three siblings after losing most of her belongings to the flames. But Saturday’s fire took the rest of her belongings and more, “We woke up to my brother just telling us to get out of the house, that his room was on fire and we just ran out, and I blanked out.” She said she barely had

time to react, she only knew to run-out with her family. She said they are getting aid from the Red Cross, and they are able to afford a temporary hotel room with their help. But that help is going fast. Zarate said, “I’m not sure how long we are going to stay here, we might end up going to a shelter for a little while until we find something, I’m not sure.” She said the community began helping as soon as the word spread of the fire, and she hopes the community continues to help said as she searches for shelter for her children. “I need to get up, I need to do something,” Zarate said. “I can’t just be depressed and sad all of the time, you know I need to get stuff going for my family, especially my kids.” Zarate set up an online page to receive aid from the community, learn how to support them, go to https:// www.gofundme.com/Avilesfamily-in-need Source: KMIR

Study Finds Drugs in Hudson, from Troy to NYC

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – A new study has found concentrations of prescription drugs in water throughout a 155-mile stretch of the Hudson River. Researchers tested water samples for 16 different pharmaceutical compounds including antibiotics, cholesterol medication and acetaminophen. According to Andrew Juhl, an aquatic biologist at Columbia University’s LamontDoherty Earth Observatory, on average about half the compounds were found at each site and several locations showed at least trace amounts of all 16. “In the places where we saw the very highest concentrations, there could be some chronic health effects on aquatic organisms,” he says. “There’s no evidence that the levels of pharmaceuticals that we see pose a direct threat to human health.” The highest concentrations were close to locations where sewage entered the river. Sewage-treatment plants are not required to remove pharmaceuticals from the water they treat. Surprisingly, the highest concentrations were found upriver. Juhl notes that at Kingston, 90 miles north of New York City, at least five of the compounds were found in potentially worrisome quantities. “We also see pretty high background values everywhere for many of the compounds,” he adds. “And what that tells

Approximately 100,000 New Yorkers depend on the Hudson for drinking water. Juhl

points out that north of New York City, about 450 million gallons of treated sewage is released into the river every day, from 8 to 11 percent of the freshwater flow. “It was remarkably high relative to other kinds of freshwater input,” notes Juhl. “That in itself was a pretty

surprising finding for me. We knew that there was a lot of sewage coming into the system, but I didn’t realize how much there was.” The EPA has not set standards for the presence of pharmaceuticals in drinking water.

Anton Chekhov’s Masterpiece “Uncle Vanya” Shines By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member: American Theatre Critics Association Let me say at the outset, that in literature, no one suffers more than characters in Russian novels and plays except, possibly, JOB and perhaps Oedipus Rex. That being said, San Diego’s The Old Globe Theatre is presenting a new translation and a new way of staging Anton Chekhov’s masterpiece dramedy “Uncle Vanya”. Renowned Russian translators Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky along with Chekhov scholar/ director Richard Nelson, put their collective heads together coming up with, not only, a new translation of ‘Vanya’, but a unique presentation style that director Nelson calls “conversation voiced dialogue”. The Old Globe’s White Stage is a performing space in the round, which presents a challenge for directors in solving vexing blocking and traffic issues. At some time during the performance actors will obscure the view of some audience members, causing them to strain to clearly hear the dialogue. The actors, in the White Theatre production, for all intents and purposes speak to one another, in character, as if they are at an intimate gathering of family members in a kitchen room setting. According to Erna Finci Viterbi Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein, Richard Nelson’s directing requirements for staging the production at the intimate 250 seat White Stage called for 14 strategically placed microphones to be installed over the heads of the on-stage actors in order to capture the conversational dialogue, along with special speakers that are aimed at all rows; enhancing the audiences’ relationship to the on-stage action. It’s as if we’ve become flies on the wall; not missing even the smallest facial expression, raised eyebrow, or important nuanced character dialogue. It’s a fascinating and innovative theatrical convention and it works. The ”Uncle Vanya” production that fans of Chekhov expect to see will be familiar. It’s still a wonderful family story of relatives kvetching about the weather, the lack of money, their aches and pains, and the give and take of characters who still struggle in seeking love and small rewards of country life in Russia during the late 19th century. Director Nelson describes his approach in staging ‘Vanya’, in an interview with James Hebert, senior theatre critic of the San Diego Union-Tribune, who says In www.desertstarweekly.com

keeping with the intimacy of “Vanya”, which is a family play, a very complicated family play, but it’s a family play. “You have Sonya and then you have her uncle, Vanya, and you have a father and a grandmother and a nanny and a stepmother. And the person she loves. It’s a very tight-knit group of a very complicated family, adding, “it also has the smallest cast of any of the Chekhov plays. It’s a play that is in essence is a series of conversations.” Actor Jay O. Sanders is charged with the heavy lifting in this splendid production as Vanya. Mr. Sanders, a seasoned New York- based actor, with over 40 years of experience, delivers a stunning and powerful performance as Vanya. It’s a highly nuanced effort that displays a more assertive Vanya than we are used to seeing. His scenes with the young and beautiful Elena (Celeste Arias) in Act I are achingly poignant as he declares his feelings for her. Vanya’s protective side in Act II in his scenes with his niece Sonya (Yvonne Woods) are also poignant and deeply affecting. She admits that she is in love with Dr. Astrov, the tired and world- weary local doctor who has no romantic feels for Sonya, and, will no doubt, die of alcoholism, due to his depression as a failure in life, is nicely played by Jesse Pennington. The conversational style of the play is jolted out of its rhythm momentarily, in Act II when an explosive verbal exchange between Vanya and his self-absorbed and irritating, brother-in-law Professor Serebryakov (solidly acted by Jon Devries) berate and demean each other over the fate of the family estate. The story may remind some of Horton Foote’s family comedy “Dividing the Estate”, however, that is an American southern setting, and “Uncle Vanya”, is a study in 19th century Russian rural life. Generally speaking, however, human emotions are universal, it’s just the cultures and the time periods that are different. Universal truths come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. It’s just a matter of how we display and/or accept those truths. Dedicated performances also come from Roberta Maxwell as Marya (Vanya’s mother) and Kate Kearney-Patch as a former house nanny. It’s a compelling ensemble cast of pros who know their way around a Chekhov masterpiece when they find themselves in one. Director Nelson shines a light on small cast, intimate productions, giving directors an alternative when staging in the round becomes an issue. Perhaps ,”conversation voiced dialogue” productions,

In the technical department led by director Nelson, the single set designed by Jason Ardizzone works for both actors, and the audience. The costumes designed by Susan Hilferty and Mark Kloss are period

appropriate under the lights designed by Jennifer Tipton. The Sound Design by Will Pickens and Alex Heath, deftly blend the sounds of the countryside; enriching the overall visual experience. If I had to be picky with this otherwise stellar production, it would merely be for a lack of “feeling” that hot, enervating, oppressive,

heat that drives the characters ennui, which is a hallmark of Chekhov plays that are set in the summertime. “Uncle Vanya” performs at The Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park on the Sheryl and Harvey White stage and runs through March 11, 2018.
