What Determines Investment Style of Financially Healthy People

By Janice Gough It is indisputable that monetary knowledge does appear to help people invest more profitably, however, does not strongly predict financial health. It may not be what you know, or even who you know, but who you are, that shapes your financial future. A recent study of over 3,000 people in six different countries, finds that wise financial decision making is deeply rooted in character specifically shaped by a person’s perspective on time. This study of financial decision making shows little correlation between monetary

knowledge and financial health. Doubtless knowledgeable people accumulate more wealth. However, high selfratings for fiscal acumen, do not consistently correlate with good financial decision making. In fact, people who rated themselves as having financial acumen, were more likely to be poor economic decision makers. A high level of acumen, does not predict people’s monetary behavior. The one area found to be predictive of good financial decisions was one’s perspective on time, as viewed through a matrix of pastoriented, present-oriented and future-oriented personality types. Those who related to their past, highly correlated with financial health. The reason past-oriented people are financially healthier is that they base their decisions and actions on memories, rather than current experience. Generally, they will take fewer risks due to negative past experiences. Will Rogers, of this era, stated, “I am more concerned about the return “of” my money than the return “on” my money.” These feelings come from those who entered the working world during a

financial crisis and face high levels of youth unemployment. As a result, they tend to be more risk-averse. The hard times they lived taught them that one should not buy a car that you can’t afford, or a house for which is out of the realms of your paycheck. However, sensible as these feeling is, the downside is the missed opportunities to grow your wealth exponentially. Generally, those who live in the present are poor financial decision makers. Present-oriented are those who feel stuck with the present and feel powerless to have influence over their futures. They tend to live paycheck to paycheck. They may succeed at avoiding being financially “sick,” but they tend to spend what they want, when they want, without considerations of financial consequences. They are willing to gamble their lives’ savings, spend money they don’t have and ignore the consequences of poor financial decisions. Other traits of fiscal “Sickness” are ignoring interest rates one pays on borrowing, carrying high credit-card balances, gambling, and filing bankruptcies and foreclosures. With the feeling

of lack of control, they are likely to stick with their existing bank or credit card and fail to plan for a solution to their budgetary illness. Future-oriented personalities would seem to be models of financial propriety, sacrificing current enjoyment for future gain. However, such people may be apt to make risky, bad investments, based on bad information or advice. Millennials are among those who invest with this insight. They have found good jobs and incomes, which give them the freedom to make choices. They are greater risk takers, however, are highly subject to “hype” in investing over sound fundamentals. From a positive standpoint, Miliennials will take risks when they have control, such as, entrepreneurial activities or self-employment, but they are wary of risk out of their direct control, such as traditional investments. Because they tend to be more reactionary, they should place control of overspending by keeping limited exposure to open credit lines and trading accounts. All three Generational Groups need the expertise of a good financial consultant. Why?

Because it is not always the big mistakes, one makes that can cause financial blight. Unless one has the time to stay on top of financial markets daily (most people in our busy society have many time restraints), understanding taxation and the many changes, government decisions throughout the world, commodities, interest rates and debt, and have a clear understanding of each investment holding, serious mistakes will be made. Understanding Generational dynamics can help consultants comprehend their client’s investment style. Those who we help to make good choices will mold the financial future of new generations. Focusing on Financial literacy for all people will be the founding block of making our nation “Great” and “Financially Healthy”.

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. Hello Mr. Richardson, Long story short, the members have all been reluctant to get involved on our board for many years. They are all fine with someone else doing it. Our vice president resigned and then appointed herself “manager.” She paid herself each month as vice president, and upon becoming “manager”, she gave herself a raise. The association didn’t file 990 forms with the state and now the HOA’s status as a corporation has been suspended. The member-manager illegally dismissed the board and got another member to support her, and this person is

now called the “CEO”. There is no board now, just the selfappointed manager and the CEO. Her forged documents have the police snowed (they say it’s a “civil matter”). She has gone as far as to fire the gardener and her and husband are now gardeners. My question to you is how to remove this person. It’s quite a mess, but if there is any advice you can give, I would be grateful. Sincerely, J.G., San Jacinto

associations might be reclaimed from dysfunction. Government takeover is not an option, as there is no state agency which enforces the Davis-Stirling Common Interest Development Act. Receivership, in which the court appoints an outside person to be paid to run the association, is a terrible option, as it will drain the association financially. Litigation will not reform an association- It is very expensive, creates major rifts in the community, and does not effect permanent change. The best approach is for a group of neighbors commit to set aside their egos and personal agendas (that is difficult but is absolutely necessary), learn how to govern their HOA the right way, and then set about doing just that. Change alone is not enough. Each year I see associations taken over by motivated neighbors seeking and promising “change,” when the change which ultimately results is simply the board personnel and nothing more – the new board, just as the previous board, ignores law, governing documents, and clean governance as it settles old scores and allows its ends to justify its improper means. Your neighbors should not tolerate an association operating without a functioning board, officers being paid, or neighbors taking over as

paid vendors (management, landscaping, or anything else). A newly installed board should commit not only to fixing what is wrong, but also to learn how to do what is right. Directors can join the Community Associations Institute, and take the online and live board training courses it and its Chapters offer. Insist not only upon an educated board, but also that the board educate the membership as to what things truly cost, and why assessments are at their level. Insist that the board operate in a highly transparent and communicative way, working to earn and maintain the community’s trust. Hire a good management company, with credentialed managers. The cost is offset by the expertise and relief a good manager can bring. Volunteers are often scared off by the workload – which can be largely handled by a manager. Hoping things improve, Kelly

Californians: Don’t Wait to Get Free Tax Help

The AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide program has more than 400 locations in California offering free income-tax filing services. (AARP) By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES – Tax season is well underway; the deadline is April 18. Tax time can mean loads of

stress, especially because the U.S. Tax Code has become increasingly complicated. But Nancy McPherson, state director for AARP

By Desert Star Staff BOSTON – GOP lawmakers are using this week’s Congressional recess to provide some of the first details about how they plan to replace the Affordable Care Act. A new report says billions of dollars in federal support for the Commonwealth are at stake in this debate. The Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center finds one of every four dollars that supports the state budget comes from the federal government. The group’s president, Noah Berger, says GOP proposals to replace the Affordable Care Act are just the start of efforts that could trim billions of dollars in support for up to 30 state agencies. “There’s a really important partnership between the federal and state government that makes us possible for us to do every from

provide access to affordable healthcare, to high quality education in schools across the state, and a lot of those dollars are potentially at risk,” he explained. One of the proposals on the table would end Medicaid expansion and replace it with block grants. The Trump administration believes states can provide more services for less money. The Commonwealth’s Medicaid program, MassHealth, provides affordable health insurance to almost 1.9 million residents, including 645,000 children. Berger says that’s about 28 percent of the state’s population, including many low-income working families. “If the Affordable Care Act were to be repealed, or the Medicaid program was turned into a block grant, a significant share of the revenue that we get to provide health care access

California, says the AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide program aims to alleviate some of the difficulties in figuring it all out. “The Foundation’s focus

is offering free tax preparation help to anyone, and specifically people who are 50 and older who cannot afford a tax preparation service,” she said. Some tax experts say the average taxpayer doesn’t need a tax attorney, but a service like Tax-Aide can offer helpful reassurance and guidance for basic tax questions and getting returns filed. McPherson points out that the trained Tax-Aide volunteers also are familiar with deductions you might not even know about. Just last year, she says, the Tax-Aide program helped Californians obtain over $96 million in income-tax refunds and nearly $18 million in Earned Income Tax Credits. “Many taxpayers are unaware of an Earned Income Tax Credit, or they think that they don’t qualify for it, and it’s actually one of the most important forms of income support for low-income workers,” she explained.

“So, Tax-Aide can help people figure out if they do qualify, so that they get the credits that they deserve.” Last year, nearly 3,000 volunteers in California helped almost 200,000 people file their federal and state income-tax returns. McPherson says her mom uses the Tax-Aide program, which is available nationwide. “My own mother in South Carolina uses it; she’s 92 years old,” added McPherson. “She likes to prepare her own taxes, but she also likes to have someone check it to see that she did it correctly, and someone can go over that with her to make sure she didn’t miss anything.” She adds people don’t have to be AARP members or over 50 to use the service, but it’s important to get an appointment and ask what types of documentation you’ll need to bring.

Survey: Americans Reveal Biggest Tax Stressors

By Desert Star Staff A new survey from TaxSlayer examines what Americans need to make filing their taxes less, well… taxing. More than one quarter of Americans (28 percent) think it would be easier to go without a cellphone for a week than file their taxes. Other activities considered easier than filing taxes include locating constellations in the sky at night (27 percent), going without a car for the week (23 percent) and memorizing all the U.S. presidents in order (18 percent). The TaxSlayer Tax IQ survey also reveals that while 53 percent of Americans are not confident in their ability to accurately file their taxes without assistance; 72 percent are confident in their ability to file using a computer or online tax software. “For many people, filing taxes can be stressful, but all it takes is the right planning, preparation and software to make it simple, easy and manageable. Using these three things makes it easy for anyone to file their taxes,” said TaxSlayer’s Director of Regulatory Affairs and Compliance, Daniel Eubanks. Almost a third of respondent’s report being

unfamiliar with terms such as “standard deduction,” “exemption,” “tax credit,” and “withholding.” “When it comes to taxes, knowledge is power and learning is continuous,” added Mr. Eubanks. To prepare to file your taxes this season, TaxSlayer recommends: Don’t Wait to File: You can begin the filing process at any time. You don’t have to wait until all your forms are in hand. Doing this allows you to complete your return at your own pace and find out if you are missing any documents, forms or deductions. Know Your Forms: Visit IRS.gov to familiarize yourself with tax forms and terminology. Some of the most commonly used forms are 1040, 1040EZ and 1040A. Estimate Early: Use a refund calculator ahead of filing to determine if you owe taxes. If you do owe, you can make arrangements with the IRS to set-up a payment plan to reduce the amount owed. Get Personal: Be sure you have all of your own relevant income, health insurance and mortgage information, along with the full name, birthdates and social security numbers of all your dependents. Determine Deadlines:

Based on your tax situation, there could be different deadlines you need to know. And remember that “Tax Day” is not always April 15. The date can shift slightly from one year to the next. The survey was conducted online in January 2017 with market research data collection organization

Big Weekend Gun Show Ends, Bill To Kill Concealed-Carry Permits Remains By Desert Star Staff DENVER -- Attendance at the Tanner Gun Show this weekend was “comparable to last year” according to representatives. The show is the largest firearm retail event in Colorado - three times larger than its nearest competition - and attracts a

significant weapons industry presence in the state. Meanwhile, this week Colorado state senators consider SB 17-116, a bill to remove the permit requirement to carry a concealed handgun in Colorado. Joe Deedon is a former Jefferson County Deputy who

owns Tac One, a company that sells at the Tanner Gun Show, and provides training for law enforcement and the general public. “The only issue I have with the right to carry without a permit is just the basic training that’s required,” Deedon said. “I just think that without a little bit of training, somebody can go from a lawabiding citizen to now being faced with criminally negligent homicide or manslaughter charges in a split second.” Despite his concerns, Deedon said he still thinks permits should not be required. Colorado has no waiting period nor training requirement for regular gun purchases. 11 states and the District of Columbia have

waiting periods to reduce impulsive acts of violence. The proposed legislation would remove the need for a permit - or any obligation at all, depending on where the gun was purchased - in order to carry a concealed handgun in public. Mike McLively, an attorney with the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, opposes bills like this one that are being proposed across the country. “To do away with the permit requirement, I could have no experience with a handgun whatsoever - not know how to use it - go to a store in Colorado, buy that handgun and then just have the instant ability to just walk around in public without any training,” McLively said. “It

just doesn’t make sense.” Opponents of such legislation are concerned the proposed rollbacks would “reduce or eliminate the authority of law enforcement to deny permits to potentially dangerous individuals,” according to the Center. 21 other states rejected similar legislation in 2015, according to Sen. Steve Fenberg, D-Boulder, who opposes the bill. SB 17-116 will make a quick stop at the state finance committee this week before going to the Senate for a vote. Even if it passes the Senate chamber, it is expected to face steep opposition in the Democrat-controlled House. Source: Public News Service

ICE ‘removal orders’ cover 950k illegal immigrants

By Desert Star Staff The 680 undocumented immigrants recently captured by ICE represent 0.7 percent of all those targeted for deportation, as nearly 940,000 others remain undetained. Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security has approved hiring more ICE agents. Government officials and President Donald Trump are proposing hiring more border enforcement agents and changing the deportation laws to deal with nearly 1 million undocumented immigrants given “final orders of removal.” In a written response to questions from Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman

Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the current director of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Thomas Homan, said that ICE has only detained 11,006 undocumented immigrants since May 2016, roughly 1 percent of the million immigrants who have been ordered for deportation. “As of May 21, 2016, there were 950,062 aliens with final orders of removal on US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) national docket. Of those aliens, 939,056 were on ICE’s nondetained docket and 11,006 were on ICE’s detained docket,” Homan told the Judiciary Committee, according

to the Washington Examiner. On Thursday, Congresswoman Linda Sanchez (D-California) said that Homan told her and Democratic colleagues that ICE plans to significantly increase immigration arrests under Trump’s executive order. “They said that we can and should expect many more arrests and removals this year,” Sanchez told the Los Angeles Times, adding that under the proposed policies, “essentially anybody who has an immigration status violation is a priority for deportation.” The latest survey from the Pew Research Center Hispanic Trends found over 11 million undocumented immigrants

were living in the US in 2014. In a statement from last week, Secretary John Kelly of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that 680 illegals had been detained by ICE officers in a series of raids since the executive order was signed. Kelly said the enforcement operations were regular and that they were only targeting criminals. “Of those arrested, approximately 75 percent were criminal aliens, convicted of crimes including, but not limited to, homicide, aggravated sexual abuse, sexual assault of a minor, lewd and lascivious acts with a child, indecent liberties with a minor, drug trafficking, battery, assault, DUI and weapons charges,” Kelly said. On Sunday, Kelly signed a pair of memos approving the hiring of thousands of new enforcement agents and expanding the “expedited removal” proceedings to cover thousands more undocumented immigrants. In his first memo, Kelly approves the hiring of 10,000 new ICE officers and 5,000 new staff for the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in response to Trump’s January 25 executive order, which calls for at least 5,000 new hires. “The surge of immigration at the southern border

has overwhelmed federal agencies and resources and has created a significant national security vulnerability to the United States,” wrote Kelly, citing the increase in apprehensions along that border between 2015 and 2016 that “significantly strained” their resources. There are currently 20,000 ICE employees in total, according to the agency’s website. Kelly’s second memo would allow ICE and CBP to immediately deport individuals who have been detained. Under current laws, expedited removal is only used for those caught by border patrol agents within 100 miles of the border, and only applies to those who have been in the country for up to two weeks. Kelly’s memos would expand those rules to individuals who have been in the country for up to two years, no matter where they are in the US. The pair of memos do not include the proposal to mobilize the National Guard for immigration enforcement that was included in a draft leaked to reporters on Friday. The current memos are still considered draft documents, and need to be reviewed by the White House Counsel’s Office before they will go into effect.

Backlash to Anti-Public Lands Policy Grows

Controversy over the Bears Ears National Monument has cost Utah its coveted spot as host of the Outdoor Retailer trade show. Nevada cities may bid for it. (Josh Ewing) By Desert Star Staff CARSON CITY, Nev. – A backlash against policy assaults on public land is growing, and now, a conference of outdoor retailers has decided to leave Utah over that state’s position on the issue. The Outdoor Industry Association, which has held its giant trade shows in Salt Lake City for two decades, says it will seek a new home for its Outdoor Retailer shows in 2018. It’s a direct response to Utah Gov. Gary Herbert’s

opposition to the newly-created Bears Ears National Monument. Ron Hunter is the environmental activism manager for retailer Patagonia, a member company of the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) that runs the conference. He said his company is pulling out of the next two OIA shows, still under contract to take place in Salt Lake City later this year. “We believe that public lands should stay in public hands,” Hunter said. “And perhaps, we don’t know, but

the state delegation and the governor want to privatize some of that land, sell it off to oil and gas developers, let’s say. And we think there’s a higher value to these public lands than that.” Utah Rep. Rob Bishop has led the charge to get Congress to transfer federal public land into state hands. Officials from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and its counterpart in Reno have said they don’t want to comment on the controversy,

but are open to bidding to host the conference next year. President Donald Trump’s nominee for Interior Secretary, Montana Rep. Ryan Zinke, has said if he is confirmed, one of his first trips will be to Bears Ears, which is sacred to local tribes, but also coveted by ranchers and oil and gas interests. Hunter said Patagonia also objects to a proposal to shrink the boundaries of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southern Utah. “We don’t have a thriving business unless we have access to public lands, and we’re afraid that in Utah, they’re taking away people’s ability to enjoy the outdoors,” he added. “And we don’t want to be in a state that does that, we want to be in a state that protects and celebrates their public lands.” The new national monuments also are attracting more attention from travel buffs. Both Gold Butte in Nevada and Bears Ears in Utah have just been named destinations for “epic road trips” by Zipcar.com. Source: Public News Service

Transgender Coloradans Say Discrimination Persists By Desert Star Staff DENVER – It’s been eight years since transgender people were added to Colorado’s anti-discrimination laws, but many in Denver’s transgender community say they’re still experiencing housing and other forms of discrimination. Sable Schultz, program manager of the GLBT Community Center of Colorado, said it’s common for trans folks to be told, after they arrive for their appointment, that an apartment already has been rented. “Perhaps that is indeed the case, but it’s also just as possible that the landlord decided that they didn’t want to rent to a transgender person,” Schultz said. “A lot of the marginalization that we experience, in terms of job and housing discrimination, is very subtle.” Nearly one-in-four transgender people in the U.S. experienced housing discrimination in the past year, according to the National Center for Transgender Equality, and a statewide survey by One Colorado found transgender people also struggle with threats of violence, limited employment options and poverty. Karen Scarpella, executive director of The Gender Identity Center of Colorado, said not being able to land a job that pays a living wage can lead to substandard housing and poorer health outcomes. www.desertstarweekly.com

Transgender Coloradans say housing discrimination persists. (Dcsliminky/iStockphoto) “Well if you’re living in an unsafe neighborhood, you’re nervous, upset, uncomfortable, you don’t feel safe and you don’t rest well,” she explained. “So, your anxiety level is automatically never going down. That affects your health.” LGBT advocates say many Coloradans don’t know that discrimination is against the law and are encouraging people to take legal action. Scarpella said ultimately discrimination is rooted in fear and ignorance. “And so, while I think that passing laws and antidiscrimination bills are important, I really believe that none of that is truly going to change until people meet somebody who’s transgender,

and understand that they’re just regular people with something that’s a little different about them,” she added. The federal Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability and family status. Adding gender identity and sexual

orientation protections would require Congress to amend the law. This story was produced with original reporting from Chandra Thomas Whitfield for The Colorado Trust. Find out more at coloradotrust.org. Source: Public News Service

U.S. Family Courts Often Award Custody to Alleged Abuser By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Over the past eight years, custodial parents killed 58 American children after a court ignored abuse claims by a protective parent, according to the Center for Judicial Excellence. And a new investigative report, published by 100Reporters.org, says family courts systemically discredit claims of child abuse and award custody to the accused parent. Reporter Laurie Udesky, the author of that report, interviewed 30 families from across the nation who lost custody battles even after their children’s claim of abuse was substantiated by police or child protective services – only to see the abuse continue. Udesky says the crisis is fueled by a lack of accountability in a family court system that too often dismisses credible evidence of abuse, while accepting questionable theories that can subvert the protective parents’ credibility. “There is a dubious theory called parental alienation

8

syndrome that’s used to discredit the abuse and it says that the mother is brainwashing the child,” she states. Udesky adds it’s a systemic problem in which judges, custody evaluators and mediators often see the father as the more confident, credible and financially stable parent. This is not to say that all custodial parents who abuse their children are men. In the analysis by the Center for Judicial Excellence, for example, of the 58 murders of children by a custodial parent, six of the perpetrators were women. Udesky maintains court officials would benefit from additional training on domestic violence and child sexual abuse. The article cites research coauthored by Linda Krajewski, an adjunct professor of psychology at San Bernardino Valley College and Geraldine Stahly, emeritus professor of psychology at California State University, San Bernardino. In that study, Krajewski and her colleagues surveyed almost 400 parents who

lost custody while trying to defend their children. “Quite often the person who has been identified as the perpetrator, as the abuser, winds up getting custody and sometimes we wind up with protective moms losing custody and even being on supervised visitation at least in part because of their efforts to defend their children,” Krajewski states. Krajewski says part of the problem is that the mothers often were abused themselves, and suffer symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder that hamper their ability to present themselves well in court. She also notes that the fathers can often afford much more effective legal representation. There is little research on court costs, but Krajewski and Stahly’s preliminary analysis of a national survey of the same 399 protective parents surveyed showed that the costs were about $100,000 for some 27 percent of these parents who ultimately declared bankruptcy. ‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night’-A Family Tragedy By Eugene O’Neill

Alfred Molina and Jane Kaczmarek. Photo by Chris Whitaker. American playwright Eugene O’Neill was a prolific writer who wrote 50 plays during his lifetime. Some of his best-known works include “Anna Christie,” “The Hairy Ape,” “Mourning Becomes Electra,” “The Iceman Cometh” and “A Moon for the Misbegotten.” He also remains the only American playwright to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1936. His initial Broadway play, “Beyond the Horizon” (1920), won the first of his four Pulitzer Prizes, the last of which was presented posthumously to “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” which

was written in 1940, but not published or produced until three years after his death on November 27, 1953. “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” based on O’Neill’s own family, takes place on a long, eventful day in August, 1912. Much of the drama is personal, only the names have been changed from O’Neill to Tyrone, to protect family identity as individual tragedies and addictions are revealed. Their story begins early in the morning in the family’s summer home in Connecticut. Mary Tyrone (Jane Kaczmarek) has just

the same popular role year after year. While his career didn’t expand, the money kept coming in to pay the bills. During this long, troubling day each family member exposes regrets and personal addictions. The men in the family all drink too much, especially the elder son James Jr. (Stephen Louis Grush), and their mother Mary has become addicted to morphine due to medical problems related to a difficult childbirth. Despite the pain, there are moments of humor. In Act II, for example, when Mary returns home from a trip to the pharmacy for what she describes as medicine for her stiff fingers, she shares a drink of whiskey with their young maid Cathleen (Angela returned home following Goethals) who gets a bit tipsy treatment at a sanitarium and as they laugh and bond with the family seems concerned each other over a glass or two. about her well being. Like O’Neill’s own father, During their time alone you feel James Tyrone (Alfred Molina) the love and tenderness they is an actor who showed great promise in his youth. However, share along with their personal sadness. There are also as he grew older with a family to support, he remained playing moments of humor as Edmund

coaxes his overly frugal father to turn on a few lights, so they can see what they’re doing. While one of the playwright’s most honored works, “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” was a play O’Neill never wanted produced on stage. In fact, he at no time wanted the play published until at least 25 years following his death to protect his family’s image and reputation. However, his third wife decided to publish it as a play following his death. It was first performed in Swedish in Stockholm where O’Neill’s works were particularly popular. It soon moved on to Broadway’s Helen Hayes Theatre with Frederick Marchin the role of the father. Both, he and the play won the Tony that year. In 2003 a revival, starring Brian Dennehy, Vanessa Redgrave and Robert Sean Leonard as the young Eugene O’Neill, garnered yet another Tony Award. Now you have the opportunity to revisit O’Neill’s masterwork at the Geffen Playhouse. It is well worth the journey... “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” at the Geffen Playhouse, 10886 Le Conte Ave., Westwood, ends March 18. Running time: 3 hours, 20 minutes. Tickets: $32-$90. He told so many stories about his life with celebrities and their reactions to his impersonations of them. Some thought he was terrific and others didn’t know what

He did a book signing after the luncheon for his many adoring fan’s.

“Zoot Suit,” Presented in Association with El Teatro Campesino

By Beverly Cohn Setting the time and place of a story by using newspaper headlines definitely catapulted us back to that moment in time when the historic events depicted in Luis Valdez’s “Zoot Suit” transpired. As a backdrop for this startling revival on stage at the Mark Taper Forum, a giant replica of the August 2, 1942 evening edition of the Los Angeles Herald Express screamed such headlines as, “Leslie Howard Lost at Sea,” “Nazis Begin Battle at Kiev,” and “Grand Jury to Act in Zoot Suit War.” Headlines from subsequent editions included, “Sleepy Lagoon Fight,” and “U.S. Marines Land in Guadalcanal.” Brilliantly written and directed by Luis Valdez, “Zoot Suit,” the musical drama was originally commissioned and developed under the guidance of the late Gordon Davidson, founding Artistic Director of the Center Theatre Group, and illuminated the racism against Mexicans. It ran for almost a year from August to October 1978. Subsequently, the production went to New York becoming the first Chicano play to hit Broadway and eventually was turned into a film. Almost 40 years have passed since its initial staging and once again, Luis Valdez has resurrected this historic theatre piece. With a cast of 25 performers, he has theatrically recreated the events surrounding the infamous 1942 Sleepy Lagoon murder and subsequent mockery of a trial of 25 members of the 38th Street Gang. The “uniform” of the day was zoot suits, a popular fashion dominated by Chicanos, which was in sharp contrast to the fashion worn by white people. With it’s high waist, wide-legs, tightly cuffed trousers pegged at the ankle, topped off with a long coat with side lapels, padded shoulders, a plumed hat, and slicked back hair, the look became a lightening rod for discrimination and violence.

The lead character of El Pachuco, originally created by Edward James Olmos, who became an overnight sensation, is splendidly portrayed by Demian Bichir. His character is a one-man Greek chorus, always lurking about throughout the play. He is the voice of reason and gives dire warnings of the unfolding injustices, similar to the character of Cassandra, the daughter of Troy. Bichir delivers El Pachuco’s dialogue in a clipped, deep throaty, guttural sound, interspersed with Spanish lines, the meaning of which eluded parts of the audience. However, his highly stylized body language telegraphed the meaning without everyone understanding the words. He warns that, “The war is on the home front,” words that ring true with stark contemporary meaning. ory line revolves around Henry Reyna, sensitively played by Matias Ponce. He and the other members of the 38th Street Gang go to a party during which a fight breaks out and, unbeknownst to Reina, who is planning to join the Navy the next day, a young man is murdered. Reyna and his innocent friends, often referred to as “baby gangsters,” head to the Sleepy Lagoon, a reservoir that serves as a swimming hole and doubles as a spot for young lovers. Subsequently, without any hard evidence, Reyna, along with the 22 members of the 38th Street Gang, are arrested based solely on their “look,” and are put on trial for the murder. Attorney Brian Abraham, very well played by George Shearer, visits the boys in jail and tells them he was hired to represent them. At first, Reyna is suspicious of his motives, but is finally convinced that Abraham is representing them for the right reasons. Also into the mix comes Alice Bloomfield, a civil rights activist brought to life by Tiffany Dupont. The travesty of a trial begins. The incredibly racist Judge F.W. Charles, is chillingly

played by Richard Steinmetz, who also plays a prison guard and police lieutenant Edwards. Abraham keeps citing that there is no hard evidence connecting these men to the murder, but every objection is overruled. The prosecutor does not pay attention to what the witnesses for the defense actually say, but restates their testimony twisting it to prove his case. It is truly agonizing to watch how the court allowed this manipulation. Abraham objects over and over to the judge’s rulings and is threatened with a contempt of court citation. A really chilling line is when the judge says, “Specific details are irrelevant.” The frustrated attorney gets the judge’s behavior into the record, declaring that he will be reporting him for misconduct under the Code of Conduct for United States Judges. It’s no surprise that the jury comes back in short order, finding all the defendants guilty in first and second-degree murder. They are sentenced to life. Abraham visits the men in jail assuring them they are already working on an appeal. Henry’s response is frightening, “Once a Mexican goes in, (to jail) he never gets out.” Act I ends with El Pachuco coming on stage announcing “A break so you can pee.” Much of Act II consists of life in prison. Reyna strikes an officer and is thrown into solitary confinement for 90 days during which there is a particularly moving scene between he and El Pachuco. Meanwhile, the gang’s attorney is called away to serve in the Army. However, he gives them reassurances that many people, including Alice are working on their appeal and he’s positive that they will prevail. There is a joyous family reunion with Henry’s mother Dolores, appropriately played by Rose Portillo and Enrique his dad, also appropriately played by Daniel Valdez. They both have comedic moments such as dad’s objection to what his daughter Lupe (Stephani

I almost wish you were going back to jail.” What about Henry Reyna’s love life? Will he marry Alice Bloomfield or his childhood girlfriend Della Barrios (Jeanine Mason.) Well. You’ll have to find out for yourself. Other members of this talented cast of actors, singers, and dancers include: Mariela Arteaga, Melinna Bobadilla, Della Barrios, Oscar Camacho, Raul Cardona, Joey Castro, Fiona Cheung, Caleb Foote, Holly Hyman, Kimberlee Kidd, Rocío López, Tom G. McMahon, Jeanine Mason, Andres Ortiz, Michael Naydoe Pinedo, Rommy Roberts, Gilbert Saldivar, Evan Strand, Bradford Tatum, Raphael Thomas, Ismael ‘Smiley’ Torres, Elena Torres, Jeremy Ray Valdez, and Bertha Villareal. This exciting production is helmed by an outstanding design team, beginning with rousing ensemble numbers choreographed by Maria Torres. The original songs composed by Lalo Guerreo and guided by musical director Daniel Valdez, run the gamut, from originals like “Zoot Suit Boogie;” “Vamos a Bailar;” “Henry and Delia Theme;” to standards like Juan Tizol’s “Perdido,” performed by Duke Ellington; Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood;” and W.C. Handy & Glenn Miller’s “Saint Louis Blues March.” Christopher Acebo’s set design is exquisite with seamless transitions between scenes. Further enhancing the overall look are

Pablo Santiago’s colorful light design, Ann Closs-Farley’s gorgeous array of period costumes, including the stunning zoot suits, as well as Philip G. Allen’s sound, David Murakami’s projections, and Steve Rankin’s fight direction. If this play was presented under the last administration, it would have been a nostalgic look back at a turbulent time in Los Angeles when discrimination against young Latino men was openly practiced – both by civilians, the police, and the judiciary, as well as men in the military, who attacked anyone wearing a zoot suit, stripping off their clothing down to the underwear. This was recreated in a compelling scene with Henry’s brother Rudy, played by Andres Ortiz. For this level of discrimination to exist today, would have been hard to imagine. However, with the state of our government at this point in time, the revival of “Zoot Suit” is more relevant than ever and serves as a strong wake-up call to the inequities of a government controlled by men who have lost sight of our Constitution and the words in our Pledge of Allegiance “.…with liberty and justice for all…” *Slut in Spanish Mark Taper Forum 135 N. The “Symphonettes” of the Desert Symphony Debut

Marilyn Benachowski, Nancy Tapick, Timmy Woods, JoAnn Horwitz, Chris Bennett. Ziva Kammerer, Phyllis Eisenberg, Barbara Rogers, Tracy Moss. Photo by Pat Krause Photo by Pat Krause By Pamela Price The Inaugural Luncheon with the Desert Symphony Symphonettes co-chaired by JoAnn Horwitz and Nancy Tapick was held on February 13 at Cuistot in Palm Desert. The goal of this newly formed group is “to support, encourage and broaden the established Children’ s Music Discovery Series, which involves and enhances the exposure of arts to local school children.” Members of the Desert Symphony attending were Gary Benson, Music

Director, Patrick Evans, Dan McGrath, Susan Goldfine and Marilyn Benachowski, CFO. The luncheon was attended by 85 guests who gathered in a private dining room where a three-course luncheon with a finale of a lavish dessert, Rasberry Feuillete was served. This provided a perfect setting for a Valentine’s Day inspired luncheon devoted to musical enrichment. Arriving guests were treated to another delightful display, this one staged by Timmy Woods, a Beverly Hills

handbag designer (her uncle was Julius Shulman, legendary Palm Springs modernist photographer) who displayed a range of handbags, including a particular stunner in the form of a crystal studded black and red piano. Founding members of Symphonettes include Chris Bennett, Patti and Dale Gribow, Patricia Bosley, Helen Varon, Kay Hanson, Joey English, Joanie Baker, Madeline Zuckerman and Ted Giatas. From the moment guests arrived at Cuistot, pianist Paul Cracchiolo drew

on his extraordinary repertoire, from, I Only Have Eyes to You to Autumn Leaves, which welcomed guests and filled the air with music until it was time to leave. Restroom Encounters of the Worst Kind

By Desert Star Staff Public restrooms are everywhere but they’re not all created equal. In fact, the annual Healthy Hand Washing Survey, conducted by restroom fixture manufacturer has uncovered several unfortunate problems that frustrate users. Nearly 70% of Americans say they’ve had a particularly unpleasant experience in a restroom due to the condition of the facility. The most aggravating issues cited include: empty or jammed toilet

paper dispensers; clogged or unflushed toilets; stall doors that don’t latch; bad smells; and an overall appearance that’s old, dirty or unkempt. But, bad encounters don’t stop there. Respondents also shared embarrassing restroom incidents. Someone opening the stall door while they’re using it; discovering the toilet paper dispenser was empty; walking into the wrong gender’s restroom; and clogging the toilet while using it were the top

four awkward situations. Moreover, Americans don’t like touching things in public restrooms. In fact, to avoid encountering surfaces, they utilize all sorts of techniques. The survey found 47% rely on their foot to operate the toilet flusher. 45% use a paper towel to grasp the door handle and 38% hover over the toilet seat. When asked what improvements they’d like to see, it’s not surprising that cleanliness topped the list. After that, Americans

Those who are younger (age 18-34) are more likely to express their frustration by telling a friend or posting a comment on social media. On the other hand, businesses can reap the benefits of having nice restrooms – particularly with millennials. 77% of younger respondents say they’ve selected a specific business because it has cleaner, more well-maintained facilities. General HR McMaster US New National Security Adviser By Desert Star Staff Trump has also selected Keith Kellogg as his chief of staff for the National Security Council. Kellogg was serving as acting adviser. Trump made the announcement during a brief press conference on Monday in Florida, calling McMaster “a man of tremendous talent and tremendous experience.” The White House said Trump had been considering several candidates for the position since Gen. Michael Flynn resigned from the post last Tuesday over a scandal concerning phone conversations with the Russian ambassador. Among the candidates were Kellogg; former US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton; McMaster; and the superintendent of West Point, Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen. I’m grateful to you for that opportunity, and I look forward to joining the national security team and doing everything that I can to advance and protect the interests of the American people,” McMaster

said at President Trump’s Mara-Lago resort on Monday. The national security adviser is an independent aide to the president and, as such, does not require confirmation by the US Senate. McMaster will be expected to attend National Security Council meetings along with the heads of the State Department, the Department of Defense and key security agencies. Gen. McMaster is a currently serving career Army officer. He served in the Persian Gulf War and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and has the nickname, “The Iconoclast General.” In 1997, McMaster wrote a book entitled “Dereliction of Duty,” which was critical of military officers in the Vietnam War for not challenging President Lyndon Johnson and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara over the White House’s Vietnam strategy. It was considered a seminal book on the principle of military responsibility to confront civilian bosses when

a war strategy isn’t working. A West Point graduate, McMaster has a PhD in US history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has also served as a senior consulting fellow at the International Institute of Strategic Studies in London. In an April 2015 speech at the University of South Florida, McMaster encouraged the US to “adapt” its concept of war, away from “a narcissistic approach” that “define[s] war only in relation to us,” toward one of “a continuous interaction with complex environments and determined enemies,”according to the Tampa Bay Times. “The military-industrial complex may represent a greater threat to us than at any time in history,” McMaster added, referencing the ominous farewell address by President Dwight Eisenhower. The general’s concern centered around the Department of Defense’s financial resources being taken for granted by profiteers, including not just

weapons manufacturers but think tanks as well. “And so where are these investments going in defense right now? They are going into areas that involve really big ticket items, that preserves the large capital transfer to defense industries and continue

to bolster employment,” he said, adding, “When you see studies that are produced about the future of war or studies that are produced about certain aspects of defense strategy, you ought to look to see who is funding it.”

By Desert Star Staff Media organizations suing the FBI for information about software used to access the San Bernardino terrorist attacker’s iPhone are saying the Bureau is unreasonably refusing to disclose the identity of the vendor and the cost involved. AP, Vice Media and Gannett sued the FBI in September 2016, demanding a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) disclosure of information related to the mystery vendor and the software used to access the iPhone belonging to Syed Rizwan Farook, one of the suspects in the 2015 San Bernardino terrorist attack. Last month, the Department of Justice responded to the suit by

providing “heavily redacted” records that lacked “critical details” requested in the lawsuit, AP said on Tuesday. In a filing to the US District Court in Washington on Monday, the three media organizations contested the government’s argument that release of the information could be used by “hostile entities” to develop countermeasures and “severely damage” FBI’s ability to gather intelligence and track down hackers. While it is undisputed that the vendor developed the iPhone access tool, the government has identified no rational reason why knowing the vendor’s identity is linked in any way to the substance of the tool, much less how such knowledge would reveal any

information about the tool’s application,” lawyers for the plaintiffs wrote in the filing. Noting that the news organizations never sought information about how the software worked, the lawyers argued the FBI was improperly invoking national security exemptions to the FOIA. “Release of this information goes to the very heart of FOIA’s purpose, allowing the public to assess government activity — here, the decision to pay public funds to an outside entity in possession of a tool that can compromise the digital security of millions of Americans,” the lawyers wrote. The FBI famously tried to compel Apple to provide “backdoor” access to Farook’s device. Apple resisted, arguing

that doing so would endanger the privacy of millions of iPhone users. FBI dropped the matter in March 2016, after a mysterious third party offered to provide software that would grant them access. The government has refused to disclose how it obtained the software or how much it paid. According to AP, FBI Director James Comey made a passing remark in April 2016 that it cost more than he would be paid over seven years, or approximately $1.3 million. Citing unnamed government sources, Reuters reported last April that the software cost just under $1 million, but that the FBI didn’t know how the hack mechanism works. The

vendor’s identity was so secret, even Comey himself was not privy to the information, according to Reuters. However, the agency reported that the software likely came from the Israeli company Cellebrite. Comey has repeatedly called for US tech companies to provide the authorities with “backdoor” access to encrypted communications, using the San Bernardino case as a prime example of why it was necessary. Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, killed 14 people in December 2015, before dying in a shootout with police. The FBI has not disclosed if the search of Farook’s iPhone recovered any information useful to the investigation.

to meet Sheikh Abdellatif Deriane, the Grand Mufti of Lebanon, in his office in Beirut on Tuesday. After arriving, Le Pen was

asked to wear a headscarf, but refused. According to AFP, Le Pen was given a veil by Mufti’s aides. “You can pass on my respects to the Grand Mufti, but I will not cover myself up,” Le Pen told reporters. She added that at a meeting with Egypt’s Ahmed el-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of al-Azhar (a prestigious Sunni Islam title), back in 2015, she wasn’t asked to wear a headscarf. The Grand Mufti’s press office said that Le Pen had been informed beforehand of their requirement, Reuters reports. The stunt still produced some praise on social media.

“Well done! You shouldn’t mix politics and religion,” one person wrote on Twitter. A woman is free and equal,” “Bravo,” “A woman does not have to hide her face in front of a man,” said others. “There are those who speak about women’s rights and there are those who actually defend them. Marine Le Pen,” another person wrote. Others wrote that it was just a “show” and she ought “to adapt” to the country which she was visiting. “She had been warned, so it’s just a show! Pitiful!” wrote one person, while another added: “It is all an ‘art’ of politics.”

study, atmospheric rivers in the sky are to blame. After a five-year drought, California desperately needed some rain. But now the problem is that it won’t stop. According to a study published Monday in Nature Geoscience, it is because of a condition known as atmospheric rivers, or water vapors that extend thousands of miles from the

tropics to the western US. The large volume of rain has created problems for California. In Oroville, the risk of a dam collapse caused hundreds of thousands to evacuate their homes. injury and fractures to his skull and ribs, which prosecutors say requires treatment and nursing care to this day. Javier Fierro-Ayon, who was in the back seat of the Corolla, suffered multiple femur fractures that required surgery, according to a prosecutor’s trial brief. Benavidez, who was alone in the Camry, also sustained serious injuries in the crash and was pulled out of her car by a bystander. Firefighters who tended to Benavidez ``noted the strong odor of alcohol on the defendant,’’ the brief states. Benavidez, 37, is charged with second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, two counts of drunken driving causing injury and a misdemeanor count

of driving on a suspended license. She also faces several sentence-enhancing allegations for causing great bodily injury. Benavidez pleaded guilty in 2006 and in 2012 to misdemeanor DUI counts, for

which she received probation; pleaded guilty in 2008 to driving with a suspended license; and was charged in 2013 with DUI and driving with a suspended license, court records show. She was on

probation for the 2012 DUI at the time of the fatal 2014 crash. Benavidez pleaded guilty on Feb. 2 to the misdemeanor count of driving with a suspended license. Source: KMIR

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the suspect was “a known gang member on parole on early release.” They also state that a handgun was recovered at the scene, and that the suspect’s vehicle was reported stolen earlier that day. In a press conference following the shootout, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant John Corina said that Police have identified the suspect as a 26-year-old Hispanic gang member who was paroled from

jail less than two weeks ago. The investigation into the suspect’s vehicle revealed it was connected to another murder that was reported earlier that morning in East Los Angeles. Police say they are still investigating, but Corina told reporters that witnesses identified the suspect “as being the person that’s responsible for that murder.” “It looks like he did a murder over there earlier this morning, took the car, and then happened to be driving through Whittier when he got in the accident, and then was contacted by the Whittier officers,” Corina said at the press conference. “Unbeknownst to the Whittier police officers, when they went to pull the car over, they had a murder suspect... in a stolen car.” Police have issued a statement about the earlier murder, which they said took place at 5:29am on the 1400 block of Volney Drive in East Los Angeles. Police are asking the public to call them if they have any information. At the press conference,

Whittier police chief Jeff Piper broke down in tears when he was asked about his relationship to Boyer. He said Boyer was “the best of the best” and described him as a personal friend, a respected member of the force, and a mentor to young officers and sergeants alike. Piper also mentioned that Boyer had talked to him about his plans to retire from the force soon. Everybody needs to know what these officers are dealing with on a daily basis,” Piper said. “People don’t want to follow rules. People don’t care about other people... This is a senseless, senseless tragedy that did not need to be.” The death of Boyer marks the first time a Whittier police officer has been killed in the line of duty in 34 years. In the afternoon, hundreds of officers accompanied Boyer’s body during a procession, as his remains were transported from UC Irvine Medical Center to the Orange County coroner’s office. A candlelight vigil began at 6:00pm for Boyer, with hundreds showing up to honor him.

By KMIR News Staff Banning, CA - Opening statements were expected today in the trial of a repeat DUI offender accused of causing a crash in Desert Hot Springs in 2014 that killed a woman and injured two men. Prosecutors allege Monica Benavidez had a .21 percent blood-alcohol content -- nearly triple the legal limit -- when her Toyota Camry crossed the doubleyellow lines on Palm Drive and crashed head-on into a Toyota Corolla, driven by Rigoberto Cuevas, on June 5, 2014. The crash left 65-year-old Desert Hot Springs resident Maria Caballeros dead at the scene and Cuevas suffering from a traumatic brain injury, respiratory failure, a spine

Killer of Whittier cop was on ‘early release’ from jail

By Desert Star Staff Whittier police officer Keith Boyer was killed during a shootout with a “known gang member” suspected in another murder hours earlier in Los Angeles County. A procession and candlelight vigil were held to commemorate his 27-year career and sacrifice. Just after 8:00am Monday, Boyer and Officer Patrick Hazel both responded to a traffic accident in separate patrol cars. When the officers asked the suspect to exit his vehicle,

he pulled out a semiautomatic pistol and began firing at them. Boyer and Hazel returned fire, injuring the suspect before backup came. After other officers arrived, Boyer and Hazel were rushed to the hospital, where Boyer was pronounced dead. Hazel and the suspect were both reported in stable condition and are expected to survive. The suspect was taken into custody after being treated. According to a statement released on Facebook by the

Professor Explains Presidential Removal Procedures

The 25th Amendment provides guidance for what to do should a U.S. president become incapacitated. (Karen Neoh/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff DES MOINES, Iowa – While Presidents Day protest rallies Monday may focus on impeaching President Donald Trump, at least one Iowa expert says it would be a long shot. Some opponents of the president have suggested invoking the 25th Amendment, which outlines the procedures to be followed when a sitting president is no longer capable of performing the duties of the office.

David Andersen, an assistant professor of political science at Iowa State University, explains under Section 4, Vice President Mike Pence and the majority of Trump’s cabinet members would have to declare the president “unfit to serve,” a long process that is extremely unlikely. “The Republican Party would have to know that removing a sitting elected president from power would

be terribly unpopular, and they would face a backlash probably from their own party,” Andersen points out. “And they’re never going to win over the opposition party, so there’s little political gain from it.” Last week, Democratic Rep. Earl Blumenauer of Oregon called for a review of the 25th Amendment, and Sen. Al Franken, a Democrat from Minnesota, said on Sunday that he’s heard from Republican colleagues who

are concerned about the president’s mental health. Others cite ethics concerns. The latest Gallup polling shows the president’s approval rating is 40 percent overall, with 8 percent of Democrats and 87 percent of Republicans in favor of his performance. The 25th Amendment was developed after John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Andersen says there are a number of times in U.S. history when presidents have become incapacitated, and there was no clear guidance for what to do. “The 25th Amendment is unlikely to ever be necessary,” he admits. “But if it is, it is absolutely vital that we know how to transition peacefully from a president who can no longer perform the duties of the office to other people in power – namely the vice president.” Section 4 of the amendment has never been invoked, but Section 3 was used by Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush during medical procedures. Iowa was the 35th state to ratify the 25th Amendment, which was adopted 50 years ago.

Comedian Freddie Roman show comes to the McCallum Theatre

Freddie Roman By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic One of the country’s gentlemen comedians, Freddie Roman, is back at the McCallum Theatre. Roman, a veteran of some forty years in show business and twentyfive years of those performing on the ‘Catskills Circuit’ in New York State where he was known as “The King of the Borscht Belt”, returns to the McCallum stage for a one night only performance on Friday, February 24th at 8:00PM. Roman is joined on the Palm Desert, McCallum stage, with comedian Elayne Boosler, and triple-threat piano player, singer and comedian performer Sarge, as all three comedy Pros perform in Roman’s “Catskills on Broadway” show. For many patrons the show will be a trip down memory lane as the last of the Catskills hotels closed three years ago. For others, it will be an opportunity enjoy new material by top-tier comedy performers. I had the opportunity to interview him via telephone in his warm and snug New Jersey home while forty degree weather howled outside. JL: You have been a comedian for many years. Do you still enjoy the challenge and the grind of the road and the overall life of stand-up comedian? FR: Absolutely! It’s been my passion for years. I love my audiences. When I get to meet some of them after the show, they say,’ I hope you’re not going to retire. Keep on doing it’, we love it! I always tell them, No, I’m having too much fun to retire. So you’re stuck with me.

Elayne Boosler Buddy Hackett, and Alan King. But, I truly admired the comedy of Jack Benny. He was such a brilliant entertainer with brilliant comedy timing. JL: I think Benny holds the showbiz record for the longest prolonged audience laughter with his line when asked in a radio routine by a burglar, “your money or your life?” Benny just said nothing for about10 seconds, then the burglar says, ‘Well?’ And Benny replies with, ‘I’m thinking about it!’ The audience laughed for almost a minute. That’s a lot of radio air time where nothing is being said. The bit worked because of Benny’s madeup reputation, by him, that he was a bit of a tight-wad, who hid his money in a vault beneath his home, which, of course, he didn’t and he wasn’t a skin-flint either. FR: You’ve made my point about Benny. JL: What about female comedians in a man’s world? FR: The great Totie Fields and Joan Rivers. Both both wonderfully fearless comedians. Elayne, who is in our show is also a terrific comedian. Years ago, I had the pleasure of opening for Totie many times and we became friends. She was very generous to me and later arranged for me to become the opening act for Juliet Prowse in Las Vegas. That led to playing Vegas and the great hotels for the next fourteen years. Totie was one of a kind. I also opened for Steve and Edye, Tom Jones, Engelber Humperdinck, and others. It was great fun.

JL: You’ve been very generous with your time, JL: When you were but I would like to ask younger and learning your one last question before craft who were role models? we close, is that okay? FR: Oh, there were FR: Yes, of course. many, but I kind of favored the comedy of George Burns, the JL: Do you have any wise cracks of Milton Berle, favorite or memorable www.desertstarweekly.com

anecdotes that you feel our readers might find funny or amusing? FR: I don’t know if they will find it funny, but it was sure funny at the time it was happening. Totie, her husband George, and me we’re leaving the show at The Mill Run Theatre, in Skokie, Illinois, one night when all of a sudden Totie spots a police car and begins to shout,

Rape! Rape! The squad car pulls up, and out, come the cops. Fortunately for us, one policeman recognized Totie. He had seen our show the night before. He mildly scolded her for her prank and we all went on our way laughing and giggling as we got to our car. Show business people. We thought it was hilarious. That’s one night in Chicago I still remember to this day.

JL: Thanks, Freddie FR: My pleasure Jack Freddie Roman’s show “Catskills on Broadway” performs on Friday, February 24th at 8:00PM. For reservations and ticket information call the McCallum box office at 760- 340-2787.
