Palm Springs Tram Closed Daytona Everett The Palm Springs Aerial Tram is arguably one of the largest attractions in the valley. After severe weather last week, the tram is closed indefinitely which is posing problems for people in town for the long holiday weekend. One family came in from Mexico in hopes of
experiencing the tram but were turned away at Tramway road. They plan on trying again next month. “The inspections and damage assessments are going to be going for at least the next few weeks,” Cara Youngman, Public Relations Manager of the Palm Springs Aerial Tram, said. “Once
those are completed we will at least have a target.” Youngman, along with other crews and staff, took a helicopter up the mountain to assess the damage. Meanwhile, bookings, insurance, and other inconveniences all have to be sorted out. “Any closure results
in loss of revenue but the most important thing for us is that everyone is safe,” Youngman said. Still, with each day that passes, more business is lost for the city. “It’s sad for us,” Joyce Kiehl, Director of Communications for the Greater Palm Springs
Kaepernick accused of ‘selling out’ By Desert Star Staff NFL outcast Colin Kaepernick has been charged with “selling out” after speculation he could be paid up to $80 million for settling his collusion complaint with the league. On Friday, the NFL and attorneys for Kaepernick and former San Francisco 49ers teammate Eric Reid announced that the pair’s complaint about alleged collusion among league owners to keep them unsigned had been settled out of court. “For the past several months, counsel for Mr. Kaepernick and Mr. Reid have engaged in an ongoing
dialogue with representatives of the NFL,” a statement read. “As a result of those discussions, the parties have decided to resolve the pending grievances. The resolution of this matter is subject to a confidentiality agreement, so there will be no further comment by any party.” No details of the agreement were provided, although NFL insider Mike Freeman said that, having spoken to NFL teams, there was speculation that Kaepernick could be in line to pocket between $60 million to $80 million. KidWind Student Competition at Desert Hot Springs High School
By Desert Star Staff PALM DESERT, CA—A partnership of Coachella Valley schools and civic partners are proud to announce the 9th Annual KidWind Regional Competition set for Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019. Area students will compete in the regional event scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (teams begin arriving for check-in at 8 a.m.) at Desert Hot Springs High School, 65850 Pierson Boulevard, Desert Hot Springs, CA. Approximately 130 students from area middle and
high schools will build and demonstrate their working wind turbine models. The student projects will be judged by local industry partners and community leaders, including representatives from MSA Consulting, College of the Desert, OneFuture Coachella Valley and Riverside County EDA/Workforce. This year’s competition is jointly sponsored by Palm Springs Unified School District, College of the Desert, OneFuture Coachella Valley, and SMaRT Education. This is the ninth annual competition
organized by the partnership. Desert Hot Springs High School will host this year’s event and will be facilitated by Tim Smyth and Casey Heiser. The KidWind events in our region were started by the California Regional Consortium for Engineering Advances in Technical Education (CREATE) office at College of the Canyons through funding by the National Science Foundation, in partnership with the OneFuture Coachella Valley Advanced Technology Industry Council. College of
the Desert has sponsored the Coachella Valley event since its inception and is funding the 2019 event through their Strong Workforce initiative. The KidWind program helps teachers learn about wind energy technology, receive curriculum and materials for integrating wind energy instruction into their classes, and form student teams for a regional competition. KidWind was started by a sixth grade California science teacher, Michael Arquin, who was not satisfied
with the products available to teach children about wind energy science. KidWind creates affordable classroomready materials and free downloadable print materials to support teachers and students all over the world. For those who do not have the financial ability to purchase the materials, they also offer a giveaway program. By Desert Star Staff MORONGO BASIN – With a brisk and breezy day for the 15th Annual Parade of Homes fundraiser for Reach Out Morongo Basin, organizers are calling it a success for this year’s home tour after raising over $6800 in cash and sponsorships for the one-day event. “We had over 200 parade goers this year which was great considering the forecast was for wind, rain and possibly snow,” said Robin Schlosser, Reach Out executive director. “We had attendees from all over Southern California and vacationers from out of state and country. This year we had Visitors came from as far away as North Dakota, New York, and Washington D.C., Missouri, Massachusetts as well as from British Columbia and Toronto, Canada. “We had a lot of positive feedback as parade goers enjoyed the homes. This year’s lineup innovative, historical and artistic homes. The diversity
represents the unique lifestyle here in the Morongo Basin” Schlosser continued. “This is in large part due to the generous homeowners who call Reach Out and offer up their homes for the tour. With the response, we received from homeowners our lineup for 2020 is already in the works.” With the tour featuring homes in Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms the expanded hours of the trip allowed for more exploration of the homes offered. “One of the comments we heard over the last few years was that tour-goers wanted more time to explore the homes and talk with the homeowners thoroughly, “ said Schlosser. “In response, we decided to open the tour for an additional hour last year, and it seems to be a hit with the tour goers.” Along with the beautiful homes offered on tour, paradegoers were provided with lunch by sponsoring the Park Rock Café in beautiful Joshua Tree.
Attendees enjoyed entrees of Pulled Pork Sandwiches with coleslaw, Tacos with rice and beans as well as deserts. Public-Lands Bill Would Send Millions of Dollars to CA Parks
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – If you’ve ever fished off a pier, swum in a public pool, played ball on a local field or hiked in a state park, you’ve likely benefited from the Land and Water Conservation Fund. That program could be permanently reauthorized next week as part of a massive public-lands package before the U.S. House. The Natural Resources Management Act would expand Joshua Tree and Death Valley National Parks, add new off-road vehicle recreation areas in San Bernardino County, and add 80 miles of wild and scenic rivers, plus 700,000 acres of land to conservation and recreation

Young, a California representative and board member of the group Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, says the fund has touched every corner of the state since its inception in 1964. “There’s not a county in California that has not benefited from a Land and Water Conservation project. “We do want people to know, yes, it’s closed right now but here are some other things you can do when you come to visit,” Kiehl said. Now, locals and tourists are backpedaling to reschedule their plans. “I’m hoping that they get it fixed as fast as they can, but I know it costs them a lot of money,” Taylor Browne, a Palm Springs resident, said. Tram managers said people with previous bookings would be refunded. As for visitors looking to hike in areas near the tram, they’re being turned away, too. The event is always held a the Renaissance Esmeralda spa and Resort in the Emerald Ballroom. The event is presented by the H N and Frances C. Berger Foundation. There is usually a Youth Town Hall that is just before the main speaker. Our local high school teenagers always attend youth Townhall. The event is typically a speech followed by a Q & A where the kids get to ask questions that are on their minds after the speaker is done talking. This time it was Roy Juarez Jr. who was homeless as a young man and how he changed his life. One question was, How did you learn to forgive your parents, who abandoned him and he

His story is one that could be told by many of the youth of today, so there were a lot of important questions about that. He spoke for about half an hour and then Dana Perino came on stage. Perino said time was short so she would only answer questions from the kids, and if no one spoke up, she would call on someone which she did not have to do as there were many questions about a lot of topics. Mostly about how she got into politics etc. She said she reads continuously to keep up with the changing world. Perino was the first Republican woman White House Press Secretary. She is the best selling author, also a revered political commentator and journalist on current events and foreign policy. In her speech to the adults,
she spoke about President Trumps State of the Union Address. She was sad to see he didn’t embellish on his first statement when he said; he was redefining new standards of living. That encompassed so much, but he went no further on that statement. She spoke about her father who gave her newspapers to read in the 3rd grade. They would discuss two items at the supper table and what she liked about them. She spoke about her years as Press Secretary under President Bush. She joined Fox News and The FIVE TV shows after she left the White House. It’s a challenge to keep up with the daily happenings as things can change a lot, just in the time you take a shower. She was scared when she had to give her first news briefing, and someone told her to put on her big girl panties and do the job.
Perino told about how no one knows how hard it is to be president and the compassion President Bush showed on many occasions when no one was looking. It shows character when a person does great things when the cameras are not rolling. President Bush always took time to personally \write letters to the families of the Fallen Heroes. It’s important to stay with your principles and tell what you think. Another trait a good president must have is the ability to forgive. Leadership, Humor, Humility, Humanity are other qualities a president should have. She spoke about social media today that has been so disruptive in our political system. Parents and teachers should seek out their truth and not follow along like sheep. Kids today should learn about our government, founders, the
constitution and our country. Socialism is not the way to go in the future. She told many funny and enlightening stories about her time with President Bush and a few about her mistakes along the way. She spoke about so many topics and said being informed is essential when trying to find the truth. Fake news is rampant. She said the weight of being Commander In Chief is harder than anyone can imagine. Find your truth by being enlightened and searching. Her rise to the top in her career was not something she had envisioned but just kept learning. She touched on topics like the Meuller Investigation, the many Democratic hopefuls, Millennials, Popularity not principals in the coming elections and the Wall. Too many to speak about here.

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and the 2019 Oscar Race This Sunday, February 24th at 5 p.m. Pacific time, the 91st Oscar Awards Show will air on ABC TV. Who do you think will win? “Bohemian Rhapsody” is one of the nine films nominated in the Best Picture category and Rami Malek is in contention for Best Actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury, lead singer, and frontman for Queen. While not all critics have praised the film, they all agree that Malek’s performance is spot on--and oh that music. After seeing the movie, I’ve been enjoying Queen hits all over again, thanks to Alexa. As I am writing this, their music is playing in the background. The iconic group Queen was formed in London in 1970 by Mercury and young college friends Brian May, John Deacon, and Rodger Taylor. Together they created music that rocked the world. Early in his career, Mercury was in love with Mary Austin (Lucy Boynton), and he even proposed to her. They never did marry due to his bisexuality; however, they
remained lifelong friends. While it is interesting to learn about Mercury’s life, what steals the show is the music. A high point is the film’s recreation of the 1985 Live Aid Concert which serves as the film’s finale. As a result of his hedonism, drug use and homosexual relationships Mercury died of Aids in 1991 at the age of 45--but the music created by Mercury and his Queen bandmates live. “Bohemian Rhapsody,” from 20th Century Fox, is rated PG-13. Running Time: 2 hours, 14 minutes. The other films in the Best Picture category are “A Star Is Born,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “Black Panther,” “The Favourite,” “Green Book,” “Roma” and “Vice.” My hunch is the winner will be--oops, the Oscar will go to “Vice” or “Roma.” What do you think? (A bit of trivia: “Black Panther” is the first superhero film to be nominated in the Best Picture category.) Best Actor in a Leading Role: Christian Bale “Vice,” Bradley Cooper “A Star Is

By Lisa Lyons “Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole” is a wildly ambitious play with music that explores the talented singer’s career and the racism he struggled against throughout his life. But it takes a very dark and curious form...imagine Nat King Cole as Ebeneezer Scrooge facing the ghosts of Christmas past. Present and future, with Sammy Davis Jr. playing Jacob Marley and you’ll get an idea of the theatrical approach taken by playwrights Colman Domingo (The Scottsboro Boys, Fear the Walking Dead) and Patricia McGregor who also directs this production. www.desertstarweekly.com
The show opens with Cole (the multi-talented and surprisingly versatile Dule Hill) brooding in his dressing room as he realizes that his show is getting the ax one week before Christmas, ending his groundbreaking TV variety show - the first one hosted by a black performer on a major network. The NBC studio is recreated to retro perfection by Clint Ramos and authentic costumes by Katherine O’Neill; the production breaks the fourth wall and includes the Geffen Playhouse audience as part of the crowd who are there to watch history. Why is
the program being canceled? According to Cole’s high-strung producer (a fine-voiced Bryan Dobson) it’s unpopular with advertisers who won’t fund a program with a negro as host, especially in the South, where some stations refuse to air it. As he struggles to deal with his anger and disappointment, his old friend (or is he?) Sammy Davis Jr. appears to play Devil’s advocate, alternately encouraging and tormenting the singer about his impotent anger. Daniel J. Watts (Hamilton) mugs in the great Jerry Lewis tradition, all the while chiding his friend for acquiescing to February 22, 2019

While Cole waits for his friend Peggy Lee to arrive and sing on the final show, he retires to his dressing room, and the fantastical tale of his life unfolds in dramatic flashbacks. A bizarre segment has Cole reading a perverted version of “The Night Before Christmas” featuring a family of rats who murder their youngest and warn that to kill one will make “ten more come.” A reference to lynching perhaps but not for kids. Did I mention that this show has lovely musical interludes sung to perfection by Hill (who knew?) and the supporting cast of amazing singers such as Gisela Adisa (who voices both Eartha Kitt and a young Natalie Cole). When Hill and Watts have a tap throw-down, it’s ovation-worthy. The play tries to cram a lot of story into its 90 minutes running time, and it doesn’t always work. One time showing a colorblind chorus of happy interracial couples, then featuring a stagehand using a labeled “decency stick” to separate the black host from his white guest, it’s often an uncomfortable blend. But the effort is nonetheless worthwhile as it exposes a side of our great country that is a still shameful part of our cultural identity. Palm Springs “Oversaturated” with Cannabis Businesses
Daytona Everett There’s a worry among business owners and city officials that Palm Springs is becoming oversaturated with cannabis businesses. Now, the city is considering cutting off new permits in certain areas for aspiring marijuana stores. “If you put too much
saturation in one area there’s not going to be enough business for everybody,” Anthony Carranza, assistant general manager of PSA Organica, said. According to the Palm Springs Office of Special Programs, the city has 26 permitted cannabis sites. Seven of those sites are

NH Death Penalty Repeal Bill Likely to Pass in House
By Desert Star Staff CONCORD, N. H. – New Hampshire is the last state in the Northeast to have a death penalty. But on Wednesday, a bill to abolish capital punishment in the Granite State moved one step closer. The House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee held an executive session about House Bill 455, which would repeal the death penalty in New Hampshire. The committee voted 11 to 6 to recommend passage by the House. Committee chair Rep. Renny Cushing, D-Rockingham, who is lead sponsor of the legislation, predicts the House is likely to pass it. “It’s been pretty clear for the past couple of years that the House has been pretty strongly in favor of repealing the death penalty,” Cushing said. Last year, a death penalty repeal bill passed both
the Republican-controlled New Hampshire House and Senate. But Gov. Chris Sununu vetoed it, and the Senate was two votes shy of overriding that veto. Sununu said he opposed the bill because he stood with crime victims. Hannah Cox is the national manager of Conservatives Concerned about the Death Penalty, a nonprofit group that supports the repeal bill. She says her own views about capital punishment changed over time. “I became opposed to the death penalty a number of years ago, when I first became aware of how ridiculously high the costs were for operating the system, and what that meant for the clearance rate for other crimes, and the burden that these cases placed on the solvency rate for other crimes,” explains Cox. The issue hits especially
close to home for Rep. Cushing, whose father was murdered. He similarly argues that resources spent on the death penalty could be better used solving homicides. “We have 128 unsolved murder cases in the state of New Hampshire,” Cushing says, “and yet, we seem to be willing to spend millions of dollars to pursue one death penalty case – at a time when, for the family members of the victims of those 128 unsolved murders, they’re waiting for justice and wondering, ‘Where is the prioritization of that?’” Only one person is on death row in the Granite State, which carried out its last execution in 1939. While Democrats currently control both the state House and Senate, House Bill 455 has bipartisan support.
