‘Are we alone?’ 7 new Earth-sized planets discovered, 3 found ‘ in star’s habitable zone’ By Desert Star Staff The newly-discovered ‘exoplanets’ could have life-supporting liquid water under the right atmospheric conditions, according to the space agency, but the chances of finding water in its liquid state are highest with the three in their star’s ‘habitable zone’. NASA revealed the new

findings about the exoplanets, meaning planets outside our solar system, at a special press event in Washington, DC. The exoplanets circle the star TRAPPIST-1, which lies just 39 light-years from Earth. The discovery sets a new record for the greatest number of habitable-zone planets found around a single

By Shirley Brenon If you missed the Dr. George Car Show at the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens then you were not among the 11,000-other people that attended. There were 961 cars displayed and they had a higher shine than an officer’s dress shoes. There were woodies, VW buses with beautiful upholstered seats, roadsters, sedans, restored historical vehicles, low riders, hot rods, drag racers and station wagons. It was lines and lines of sparkling chrome and vividly painted horsepower just waiting to be seen and praised. The owner of each car was nearby to answer questions and

many participants and their families were sitting together for picnics and conversation under canopies. The crowd made their way from car to car with many side trips to the 45 vendors that were selling food, clothing, car accessories and souvenirs. In addition, they had many opportunities to hear Car Talks in the speaker’s tent with former team member on the TV Series “Overhaulin’” Andreas Somogyi; former World Champion Race Driver Allen Grant and NHRA announcer and race commentator Bob Beck as he interviewed many special guests who described their

star outside our solar system. This discovery could be a significant piece in the puzzle of finding habitable environments, places that are conducive to life,” Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington, said in a statement. “Answering the question,

‘Are we alone?’ is a top science priority and finding so many planets like these for the first time in the habitable zone is a remarkable step forward toward that goal.” At a news conference to announce the discovery, one of the research team said TRAPPIST-1’s relatively close proximity to Earth means

information on the planet’s lifehosting potential should soon be informed by hard data. In a Q&A session following the announcement, NASA scientists said that the presence of water has not been confirmed on any of the newly-discovered planets. Continues on Page 3

Legalizing Gay Marriage Brings Drop in Teen Suicides

By Desert Star Staff HOUSTON – New research says state laws legalizing samesex marriage have brought a reduction in suicide attempts among high-school students. The study particularly notes a decline in suicides among gay, lesbian and bisexual teenagers in those states, prior to the 2015 Supreme Court ruling upholding gay marriage. Advocates for the Texas LGBT community are hoping that trend will continue. Chuck Smith, CEO of Equality Texas, says laws granting civil rights can have a profound effect on a person’s self-image. “The larger takeaway is, this is a study that can begin to make a connection between policies or laws that either

affirm or stigmatize people and their psychological and physical health,” he said. The study from Johns Hopkins University found in an average year, three in 10 gay teenagers attempt suicide, six times the rate for straight teens. But in states where gay marriage was legalized, there was a 14-percent drop in suicide attempts by gay teens. The authors say while the study doesn’t directly link the two events, it suggests additional studies to see if the trend continues. Smith says gay teens are often stigmatized or bullied because of their sexuality, and that laws granting them civil rights can make them more hopeful for the future, and less

inclined to harm themselves. “If laws and policies are enacted that are affirming of lesbian and gay people’s sexual identity, that actually can have an effect of reducing the triggers that could negatively impact mental and physical health,” he explained. He says recent events in Texas confirm that acceptance, by the legal system and society, is critical to people who are gay. “We saw in Houston after their non-discrimination ordinance was repealed, there was an increase in calls to suicide-prevention lines,” he added. A new study shows that in states where same-sex marriage was legalized, fewer The research, published in gay teenagers have attempted to take their own lives. Video shows Harrison Ford’s plane mistakenly fly over jet

By KMIR News Staff SANTA ANA, Calif. - Newly released video shows a small plane piloted by Harrison Ford flying low over an airliner with 116 people aboard moments before he mistakenly landed on a taxiway at a Southern California airport. Authorities have not said how much distance separated the two planes, but Ford’s aircraft came

close enough that its shadow distinctly passed over the jet last week at John Wayne Airport in Orange County. The 74-year-old actor was told to land his singleengine plane on Runway 20L, but he instead landed on a parallel taxiway on Feb. 13. The video released Tuesday shows the incident from different angles. In one, Ford’s Aviat Husky

plane is seen from behind as it descends toward the airfield where an American Airlines Boeing 737 is slowly taxiing. The sky beyond the airport is bright white and the flyover is barely visible. Another angle shows Ford’s plane emerge from the right side of the frame, flying low over the airliner and casting its shadow across the fuselage of the bigger

plane before landing on the taxiway a few seconds later. “Was that airliner meant to be underneath me?” Ford was heard saying on an air traffic control recording, according to NBC. No reason has been given for why Ford made the mistake, and his publicist has not replied to requests for comment. The Federal Aviation

Administration is investigating. American Airlines Flight 1456, with 116 passengers and six crew members aboard, departed safely for Dallas a few minutes later. Ford collects vintage planes and has a long and good record as an aviator. But he has had several close calls and a serious accident in March 2015 when he was injured in his World War II-era trainer. It crashed on a Los Angeles golf course after engine failure. Source:KMIR/AP

O’Neill dramatic masterpiece on stage at Geffen Playhouse By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Eugene O’Neill became America’s first Nobel Laureate in Literature in 1936. His canon of more than 30 plus plays, including four prestigious Pulitzer Prizes in Drama (the most wins to date), culminated in what is now considered to be his masterpiece “Long Day’s Journey into Night”, penned in 1953 and posthumously produced three years after his death in 1956. O’Neill was a prolific but streaky playwright, who along with Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, and Edward Albie, were arguably the four greatest

American dramatists of the 20th century. There are those who say O’Neill plays, although groundbreaking at the time, didn’t keep up with an ever changing American experience. This is one reason why many of his plays are not being widely produced anymore. Fortunately for us, the Geffen’s Artistic Director Randall Arney, took on the challenge of producing O’Neill’s masterpiece. Staged by acclaimed director Jeanie Hackett, this revival of “Long Day’s Journey into Night” features a stellar cast of gifted actors: the superb Alfred Molina as James Tyrone the family patriarch, the brilliant Jane Kaczmarek as morphine addicted Mary Tyrone, Stephen Louis Grush as the star-crossed and fated Jamie Tyrone, and Colin Woodell as young Edmund Tyrone (the alter-ego of Eugene O’Neill), a poet/ writer battling tuberculosis and alcoholism, - a Tyrone family trait. All the Tyrone’s suffer an addition of some form or other. The story is set in August of 1912 in the Tyrone family’s summer home in New London, Connecticut. The creative Scenic Designer Tom Buderwitz, delivers a multilevel and functional New England style summer home that allows the actors plenty of space for their magic to take place. Buderwitz’s design also displays on-stage nooks and crannies for the actors to be seen or momentarily hide depending on the mood of the situation. And the moodenhancing lighting by Lighting Designer Elizabeth Harper definitely renders that somber and melancholy mood of events taking place within the Tyrone

Angela Goethals and Jane Kaczmarek. Photo by Chris Whitaker family home. The costumes designed by Denitsa Bliznakova are spot on for the early 1900’s time frame. Original Music and Soundscape Composed by Michael Roth, and Projection Designs by Jason H. Thompson complete the creative team. Wags in the past have been known to say, that if the Englishman’s vice of that era was young boys, then the Irishman’s vice comes in a bottle or a keg of beer. And, there is definitely of a lot of drinking accompanying the rich and potent dialogue taking place on the Geffen stage. Although the production runs a little over three hours - with one intermission - the narrative flies bye thanks to the stage presence of its four gifted actors that keep the audience fully engaged. O’Neill’s characters are the epitome of a dysfunctional family. They also confirmed that they have yet to name any of the exoplanets, because there is no easy system for naming planets outside of our solar system. The exoplanet system is called TRAPPIST-1 after the Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope (TRAPPIST) in Chile, which was used by researchers to discover three exoplanets last year. The latest discovery, which was made using the Spitzer Space Telescope, confirmed the existence of two of those previously discovered planets, along with an additional five. Data gathered so far suggests that all the planets are likely covered with a rocky surface. The new results were published Wednesday in the journal Nature and announced at the news briefing at NASA HQ. “The seven wonders of TRAPPIST-1 are the first Earth-

fulfilling his promise to become a complete actor, is wonderfully portrayed by Mr. Molina. Mary Tyrone the matriarch laid waste by morphine addiction following complications from Edmund’s birth, is sensationally played by Ms. Kaczmarek in a tour de force performance. Jaime Tyrone (Grush) can’t let go of the alienation of his mother for years because he mistakenly thinks she secretly has always favored Edmund over him. His answer to his parent’s behavior is to take to the bottle for surcease; stunting any chance of an acting career in the theatre just like his father. Mr. Grush brings an intensity and bellicosity to Jaime that signals that he is a volatile loose cannon and likely to explode at the slightest provocation. One can also feel his mixed love-hate emotions concerning his younger brother Edmund. Colin Woodell as Edmund Tyrone, delivers a finely nuanced performance as the brooding, poet and writer suffering from tuberculosis and alcoholism. Edmund stifled by

his home life, struggles to be free from the pressures of his dysfunctional family baggage that surrounds him at home, is nicely realized by Mr. Woodell. O’Neill’s early life propelled him to expiate the “sins” of his family by creating melancholy characters in his plays that resonated with American audiences by employing the vernacular of the working and middle classes. Arthur Miller followed the same path when it came to capturing those same audiences in his “View From the Bridge” and “Death of a Salesman” plays. The wonderful ensemble cast that includes Angela Goethais as Cathleen, the young housemaid, who also has a ‘taste for the sauce’, work together like a well-oiled machine (no pun intended). This splendid production of “Long Day’s Journey into Night”, seamlessly directed by Jeanie Hackett, performs on the Gil Cates stage at The Geffen Playhouse, and runs through March 18, 2017.

size planets that have been found orbiting this kind of star,” said the lead author of the paper, Michael Gillon. “It is also the best target yet for studying the atmospheres of potentially habitable, Earth-size worlds.” The TRAPPIST-1 star is much cooler than our sun and is classified as an ultracool dwarf, meaning it is cool enough for liquid water to exist on planets orbiting very close to it, much closer than is possible even on planets in our solar system. All seven of the planets are closer to TRAPPIST-1 than any planet in our solar system is to our sun. The planets also are clumped very close to each other, NASA says. If a person was standing on one of the exoplanet’s surface, they could potentially see geological features on the neighboring planet. February 24, 2017

Controversial Abortion “Reversal” Bill Back Before Lawmakers

By Desert Star Staff INDIANAPOLIS – A controversial piece of legislation that would require doctors to inform women who want to have an early stage non-surgical abortion that the procedure may be “reversible” will likely end up in court, if approved by lawmakers. On a seven-to-six vote, the House Public Policy Committee signed off on HB 1128 this month, and in a rare procedural move, the full House sent it back to them. The proposal raises medical and political questions, as well as privacy concerns: how much should government control physicians’ conversations with their patients? Betty Cockrum, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky, calls the legislation preposterous, and says claims that the procedure can be reversed are “junk science.” She says people need to speak up because it’s unconstitutional and will be challenged in court

if it were to become law. “There simply is no medically based, evidencebased, health-care provider professional-based evidence to suggest that there’s any truth to that, yet Indiana lawmakers are seeking that that not only be a provision, but that it be put into code,” she said. Rep. Ron Bacon (R-Chandler) introduced HB 1128. He told Indiana Lawmakers last week in a television interview that his goal is to dismantle Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court case that legalized abortion in the United States. “The only way I can have any effect on it as a lawmaker is to try and chip away at it as long as I can.” The medication-induced abortion procedure is also known as the “Day After” pill. Anti-abortion groups such as Indiana Right to Life are hailing the committee approval of HB 1128, saying it ensures women are informed about their options and urging Hoosiers to call lawmakers

in support of the legislation. It will be back before House Public Policy members again as early as this week. Cockrum says the bill is an intrusion into the practice of medicine and doctorpatient confidentiality. She calls it a political effort to shame and confuse women who are contemplating

ending a pregnancy. “Two-thirds of the women who have abortions have already given live birth at least one time,” she added. “Do they really need a politicianwritten script in advance of an abortion? I don’t think so.” A federal judge blocked a controversial abortion law in Indiana last summer. House

Bill 1337, signed by thenGov. Mike Pence in March, bans women from seeking abortions based on race, gender or fetal defect. It also mandates that women be required to bury or cremate the fetus. The law also required that doctors have admitting privileges in order to practice abortion services.

By Desert Star Staff ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota’s leading patientadvocacy groups have a message for Congress: keep people covered. They say any changes to the Affordable Care Act must maintain critical patient protections, and make sure health insurance is adequate and affordable. If the ACA is repealed or replaced, they’re asking not to cancel insurance for people with preexisting conditions or

when they get sick. They also want assurances that young people can stay on their parents’ policies until age 26, and for no annual or lifetime dollar limits on coverage. Justin Bell, government relations director for the Minnesota Patient Advocacy Coalition, says health care has become very divisive and partisan, but the focus should be on health. “Regardless of what happens now, as health care

reform is changing again, we just want to make sure we’re not taking a step backwards, and providing protections and access to care for people that live with chronic disease or complicated health needs,” he explained. The Minnesota Patient Advocacy Coalition is made up of more than 20 organizations, including the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network, American Heart

Association, Minnesota AIDS Project and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Ellie Beaver, Minnesota government relations director for the Cancer Action Network, says there are parts of the Affordable Care Act that have really helped Minnesotans. “We think all those things are very important and need to be preserved in any solution to any changes made to the Affordable

Care Act at the federal and state level,” she said. Bell says while there may need to be some changes in the current health care system, it should be there for the people who need it. “We want to make sure that we allow room to innovate and try new ideas and tweak parts of the current law that aren’t working as well as we had hoped, but also not take steps backward,” he added.

A controversial abortion measure will be before Indiana lawmakers within the next few days. (npr.gov)

The “Symphonettes” of the Desert Symphony Debut

Marilyn Benachowski, Nancy Tapick, Timmy Woods, JoAnn Horwitz, Chris Bennett. Ziva Kammerer, Phyllis Eisenberg, Barbara Rogers, Tracy Moss. Photo by Pat Krause Photo by Pat Krause By Pamela Price The Inaugural Luncheon with the Desert Symphony Symphonettes co-chaired by JoAnn Horwitz and Nancy Tapick was held on February 13 at Cuistot in Palm Desert. The goal of this newly formed group is “to support, encourage and broaden the established Children’ s Music Discovery Series, which involves and enhances the exposure of arts to local school children.” Members of the Desert Symphony attending were Gary Benson, Music

Director, Patrick Evans, Dan McGrath, Susan Goldfine and Marilyn Benachowski, CFO. The luncheon was attended by 85 guests who gathered in a private dining room where a three-course luncheon with a finale of a lavish dessert, Rasberry Feuillete was served. This provided a perfect setting for a Valentine’s Day inspired luncheon devoted to musical enrichment. Arriving guests were treated to another delightful display, this one staged by Timmy Woods, a Beverly Hills

handbag designer (her uncle was Julius Shulman, legendary Palm Springs modernist photographer) who displayed a range of handbags, including a particular stunner in the form of a crystal studded black and red piano. Founding members of Symphonettes include Chris Bennett, Patti and Dale Gribow, Patricia Bosley, Helen Varon, Kay Hanson, Joey English, Joanie Baker, Madeline Zuckerman and Ted Giatas. From the moment guests arrived at Cuistot, pianist Paul Cracchiolo drew

on his extraordinary repertoire, from, I Only Have Eyes to You to Autumn Leaves, which welcomed guests and filled the air with music until it was time to leave. Phyllis Eisenberg, one of the Founding Members remarked, “this was a perfectly choreographed Inaugural Luncheon where Founders had an opportunity to mingle with one another and hear about the upcoming events planned by the Desert Symphony such as their Musical Soiree and Reception featuring Elizabeth Pitcairn performing on the

Red Violin on March 8th at a private residence in Indian Wells. This is part of the “Children’s Music Discovery Series” ( ‘hooked on classics’) which provides free children’s performances, making all of these philanthropic events such as the one today, so important for our community.” Pamela Price is a Cathedral City Public Arts Commissioner
