Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Walk of Stars held another Star Dedication on Feb. 22nd at 2 pm at 155 South Palm Canyon Drive. The dedication was part of Modernism Week and the iconic photo, Poolside Gossip. Nelda Linsk was the lady in Yellow in the picture that was on display during the Dedication Ceremony. Mayor Robert Moon spoke and noted that Feb. 22nd would always be Nelda Linsk Day and provided her with a Palm Springs Plaque about the dedication. The next speaker was a

friend and colleague, Gary John. John spoke about how he found out that Linsk was the lady in yellow from friends. He said he was introduced to all the famous people that Linsk knew and partied with them in their homes. He told of the fantastic life that Linsk has had over the years from being on TV in children show to an impressive modeling career and her years in Real Estate. Linsk has lived in Palm Springs for 50 years and has made a massive impression with all the work she has done for charities. Her friendship with Frank

and Barbara Sinatra and the building of the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center is legendary. The next speaker was Robert Marx, Barbara Sinatra’s son. He thanked Linsk for being a friend to his mother for many years and for being at her bedside every day before she passed away making her laugh and smile with stories. President Robert Alexander introduced all the prior Walk of Stars honorees and noted that this star had the most honorees at any star. Fans lined the street,

Founder Helen Varon, Special guest Lili Goldwin, Michael Leventhal and Mickey Goldwin. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 8th Annual Matthew Varon Memorial Luncheon was held on Feb. 23rd at Desert Willow Country Club. The luncheon benefits the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind. They announced that they were going to present a special award to honoree Bianca Rae who is the morning anchor with KESQ News Channel 3. Rae is the founder of The Bianca Rae Foundation which is a non-profit charity that serves disadvantaged children and all animals. Rae created

a Ray-of-Hope for middle school girls and organizes adoption events for animals in shelters and helps get animals into a no-kill shelter. The Guest of Honor was Lili Goldwin who lost her sight as a young woman from a little-known disease. She was determined to do something with her life after her dream of becoming a veterinarian was lost along with her sight. She wanted to help others in her situation, so she went to school. She got a B.A. in Agriculture and got another

degree as a special needs teacher. She said she had to keep changing her dreams as she lost her sight. She made the trip from Israel just for this luncheon. She is a courageous and determined woman who has helped so many in a variety of causes. She said her guide dog, ZITA, is her constant companion and allows her the freedom she would not have without her dog. She shared her incredible story with all the guests to help them understand the help a Guide Dog can give

a blind or disabled person. Goldwin along with her husband operates a Bed-andbreakfast, have four children and eight grandchildren. They prove that life can be lived fully with a disability like blindness with dedication and a mission to help others and how a Guide Dog helps along the way. Israel Guide Dogs is an accredited Dog training center in Israel. People had to travel to the U.S. to get a dog before the Israel Center. The Center breeds, raises and trains the dogs at the cost of $25,000

Symphonettes Sweetheart Luncheon

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The second Annual Desert Symphony Symphonettes Sweetheart Luncheon was held at the new Craft Restaurant in Rancho Mirage that is now open to the public on Feb. 19th. Co-chairs for the event was Nancy Tapick and Jo Ann Horwitz. There was a fashion boutique provided by Shirley’s Boutique and La-di-Da Jewelry for shopping. The ladies had their choices of some very upbeat clothing, purses and jewelry at reasonable prices. It was fun and unique shopping

experience for the guests. One of the highlights was a speaker that is a teacher in Palm Springs, Jason Powell. He spoke candidly about his life as an unwanted child who was raised by parents that were less than loving. He said he was punished at age 6 for being caught for stealing. His parents taught him at an early age the things most kids are taught not to do. Taking, selling drugs, etc. that his parents did. His life included drugs, being shot, starving and getting into trouble. He grew up in an abusive household

He said he attended a concert with a friend and was thrilled by the drummer. He found out there was a course for learning the drums. It was not for him, so he bought a guitar and practiced. One of the teachers said he was great and he has never heard those words before. He exercised, even more, was told he had high worth as a musician. Again he had never thought he had

Are The CC&Rs Stale?

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Hi Mr. Richardson: How often should CC&Rs be changed, amended or restated? Our current one was prepared by the developer in 1979. How much does it usually cost to amend CC&Rs? One board member is opposing updating it for reason that we may be just wasting money if we don’t get the vote. If we do not get the vote, is there another way of amending it without needing the vote of the homeowners? Thank you. B.L, North Hills

Dear B.L.: Unfortunately, most developers do not focus upon whether the original CC&Rs will help the association operate well in the future. The typical goals of subdividers are to provide documents which meet the minimum Bureau of Real Estate requirements and to also protect themselves against construction defect claims. So, original CC&Rs are normally boilerplate and do not meet any unique needs of the new community. The Davis-Stirling Act, in its earliest (and somewhat embryonic) form was enacted in 1985, and has been amended and expanded hundreds of times. Therefore, CC&Rs which are 10-15 years old or more probably do not reflect many recent changes to the law. Associations from the 90’s or earlier probably need to consult attorneys

By Janice Gough The present retirement system isn’t merely a broken mess, the current system a failure and a disaster. Consequently, the U.S. is headed for a retirement catastrophe, where millions will, one day, suffer in poverty-stricken old age. When, not if the next recession hits, GRAs may be a severe legislative bill and would be a “Fail/Safe” retirement system for Americans. The present system is a political “time bomb,” and may force devastating effects on government budgets and our economy. We could have millions of middle-class people moving downwardly into poverty. The government would have to provide more services or let these older people starve. A significant portion of our aging population, with very little income, could affect local commerce, mainly, in low-growth communities which depend on elders for their spending. Surprisingly, almost 20% of people in their 50s making $250,000 a year have nothing but Social Security for retirement. A GRA could even help affluent people have a safe place to invest. Right now, they’re in self-directed commercial accounts, in which they make a lot of mistakes. They have no idea how to decumulate their assets. And they’re worried stiff that they’ll live too long. A GRA would also help the wealthy get their children to save early so that they can be more financially independent. The income stream would also help ease anxiety about outliving one’s money,

a persistent fear, which even the affluent, especially one which older women, harbor. Women, whose life expectancy is longer than men, are more concerned about outliving their money. Between the ages of 75-79, women are three times more likely to live in poverty. Research shows that those with a small nest egg, live their last years in anxiety, possibly even malnourished because they do not know how much money will be needed. That, and having to manage the money themselves, is causing trauma, depression, and anxiety in a vast part of the population. When people have even as much as $1 million and don’t have a guaranteed retirement payment stream, they get anxious. A Guaranteed Retirement Account (GRA), providing a supplemental stream of income to Social Security, could stop this from happening. We need a Plan to Guarantee Retirement Security for All Americans. The program would not be a government entitlement; however, payments could be managed by the Social Security Administration. The plan would focus on those earning less than $100,000 a year; however, a GRA would benefit high-networth people, also. It could provide them with a safe place to invest versus making costly mistakes in their 401(k)s. How would the plan work? Under the GRA plan, employees and employers would each automatically contribute 1.5% from worker salaries. Independent contractors would add 3% on their own. All funds would be pooled and invested by a board of professional investment managers appointed by the president

managing the remaining assets and debt. The goal for advisors would and should be now, to maintain lifetime consumption. The GRA plan requires an act of Congress and would be managed by a federal agency. The retirement crisis is on the minds of most voters; especially older people who are nearing retirement. They are much more likely to vote on this issue. The plan adds to a program that people already like: Social Security. The GRA plan would be a plan both political parties would support. It would mandate employees secure their financial future, but this could significantly improve all of our economic prospects. Income streams could co-ordinate at the time Social Security benefits are taken. No withdrawals could be made before this. Many people are smarter and more sophisticated today and may view GRAs with a “common sense” approach. Having these ideas on the table when the time is right is very important.

and Congress. Individuals would choose a pension manager, who would be held accountable to investors. These managers, in turn, would select the money managers to make actual investments. An estimate of a possible 6% or 7% annual return for each saver could be realized. The principal would be guaranteed, and an employee could contribute as much saving as desired. By minimizing the downside risk, the upside will be a return that’s smoothed out over the whole group over time. The “guarantee” refers to the worker’s “protected” principal; that is, each saver will get back at least as much as they put in. People would be prohibited from withdrawing funds before retirement. Unlike 401K plans, this would not be a windfall for Wall Street. The companies who manage the money, are going to be regulated and will be scrutinized for their prices and practices. It will be more regulated than it is now. Pension managers. Who individual savers would choose, could be responsible for the investments. The choices in administrating fund contributions would include many institutions and money management firms. Your financial advisor could help in that selection, along with

Pro-Gun Florida Legislature Considers Gun-Reform Bill

By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Thousands of angry students made their voices heard at Florida’s Capitol in Tallahassee on Wednesday, saying lawmakers aren’t doing enough to keep them safe. While they are dissatisfied with the lawmaking process, their efforts did get the pro-gun Legislature to consider some reform. In an unprecedented move toward gun control, GOP leaders are crafting a bill that would call for age limits and waiting periods as well as a new program to arm school staff. But students such as David Hogg, who survived the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting that left 17 dead, said lawmakers need to do more to show they prioritize the lives of students like him over the interests of

the National Riffle Association. “Change is slow and always has been and always will be, but this can’t be. This is our future and these are children’s lives,” Hogg said. “It sickens me that there are so many people that would not vote on the bill just to even discuss a ban. That’s absolutely atrocious, and I’m happy that they are not going to be here in a few years time.” The bill that would limit assault weapon sales to those 21 and older, and place a three-day waiting period on rifle purchases, is expected to be unveiled later this week or early next week. Hogg said students are rising up and are tired of ineffective leaders. He warned those who may be counting on the news cycle to change that the students will remain a strong voice for gun reform.

Students from across Florida traveled to Tallahassee to join fellow students protesting gun violence on the steps of the old Florida Capitol in Tallahassee. (Trimmel Gomes) “They are hoping people are going to forget about this, and they are not going to,” Hogg said. “If that roar out there is an example of

anything, that’s people not forgetting - at least someone. But we have to keep fighting.” Thousands of students rallied across Florida.

Some walked 10 miles to get to Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland in an act of solidarity.

‘I don’t understand why civilians need military weapons’ – Condi Rice By Desert Star Staff Condoleezza Rice doesn’t “understand why civilians need to have access to military weapons.” The former Secretary of State’s comments are seemingly at odds with her support for the 2nd Amendment. Rice, George W Bush’s secretary of state, was speaking to radio host Hugh Hewitt on Friday when she questioned the need for military weapons. “I think it is time to have a conversation about what the right to bear arms means in the modern world,” she said. “I don’t understand why civilians need to have access to military weapons. We wouldn’t say you can go out

and buy a tank,” she added. Rice’s loyalty to the 2nd Amendment is in some part tied to her childhood in Birmingham, Alabama, which saw her exposed to violence against the black community by the Ku Klux Klan. Recalling how her father and other men in the community protected them at that time, Rice said, “I think it’s a pure version of the second Amendment, as a matter of fact, the right to bear arms.” “The rights that we have in the Constitution are indivisible,” Rice said. “We can’t throw away the Second Amendment and keep the First.” While President Donald Trump and the National Rifle

Association have called for teachers to be armed in the wake of the Florida school shooting that killed 17, Rice doesn’t think arming teachers with guns is “going to be the answer.” “I don’t really like the idea, frankly, of a gun in my classroom,” she said. Rice teaches political science at Stanford University. “Look, if people need to train people to protect our schools, and perhaps even communities want to consider whether or not they need guards to protect the schools, it’s a sad thing to think that we might, then that’s something that we should look at,” she said.

FEA Urges Removal of Firearm Firms’ Stock from Teacher Pension Plans

By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — While teachers and students in Florida debate the state government on gun control, it seems educators may be more involved with the manufacturing of the weapons than many expect. The Florida Retirement System Pension Plan holds $528,000 in stock for American Outdoor Brand Company, the gun manufacturer formerly known as Smith and Wesson, as well as three other firearm manufacturers. The Florida Education Association is urging the governor and Cabinet to remove those funds from manufacturers’ hands. FEA President Joanne McCall said she hopes the

money will be divested elsewhere after the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School shooting on Valentine’s Day that left 17 people dead. “Our teachers and support personnel were the first ones on the scene, making sure that they were protecting our students,” McCall said. “And so we would hope and encourage the governor and the Cabinet to divest from those companies and place our money somewhere else.” The AR-15 rifle used in the high school attack was manufactured by American Outdoor Brand. Twelve states across the nation, including California and New York, invest money from teacher pension funds into firearm stocks. Many teachers believe the funding is

putting children in harm’s way. While there is discussion from politicians about training teachers to carry guns in classrooms, McCall said the programs for concealed carry are far from enough to properly train school staff. “But going through a program for a concealed carry is not the same thing as what law enforcement go through for an active-shooter course,” she said. “And that is a whole different ball game.” Those in favor of maintaining the current pension fund investments say the stocks are lowrisk assets with consistent returns and finding something to replace an investment that safe will be difficult. Bill Would Raise Age that Kids Go to Adult Court By Desert Star Staff SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Legislation aimed at keeping juveniles on the right track is being discussed by Illinois lawmakers. Rep. Laura Fine, D-Glenview, introduced HB 4581 this month. It would gradually bump the age that young offenders charged with misdemeanors are sent to adult court from 18 to 21, if the court decides the case does not belong in juvenile court. Betsy Clarke, president of the Juvenile Justice Initiative, said adult court can only jail and punish, but juvenile judges can give alternatives to young people who have gotten in trouble. For example, they can steer them towards getting a G.E.D or job training, or place them with a mentor. “You can really look

holistically at what the issues are that are causing the young person to come into conflict with the law, and then address those underlying issues,” Clarke said. She said the goal is to make sure that punishments for young people who make mistakes don’t make things worse rather than better. The bill has been assigned to committee for study and will be heard in the next couple of weeks. Lael Chester, director of the Emerging Adults Justice Project at Columbia University Justice Lab, said much like small children learn to walk or are potty trained at different ages, young people mature at different rates as well. She said they can learn from their mistakes, and when they do, society benefits.

“There’s no magic birthday suddenly transforming you from a child to an adult,” Chester said. “Young people are going from being completely dependent to being independent. And they’re going from being impulsive, very peer driven, to being very thoughtful and planning for the future.” Clarke said recent discussions about raising the age to purchase weapons or tobacco to 21 is proof that young people don’t mature automatically at 18. She said it’s in society’s interest to get young offenders back on track. “This age group receives a lot of second and third and fourth chances to make mistakes,” Clarke said. “We must invest in these young people. Otherwise, we will be paying - as taxpayers - for their lifelong incarceration.”

Critics Warn Bill Advancing in WY Senate Could Chill Free Speech

Wyoming already has trespassing laws, but new state legislation would make it a felony to trespass at oil and gas operations. (Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff CHEYENNE, Wyo. – A bill making its way through the Wyoming Legislature would make it a crime to impede “critical infrastructure,” including oil and gas pipelines, storage

facilities and refineries. Critics of Senate File 74 say it’s an effort to silence public opposition to projects like the Dakota Access and Keystone pipelines, by preventing the kinds of protests that occurred

By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX — A coalition of community groups and health organizations is throwing its support behind a ballot initiative, filed on Tuesday, that would force investor-owned utilities such as Arizona Public Service, Tucson Electric Power and electric cooperatives to get 50 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2030. Right now, the Arizona Corporation Commission only requires a standard of 15 percent by 2025. Pita Juarez with the Clean Energy for Healthy Arizona ballot initiative said the move is necessary to clear the air in Arizona’s biggest cities. “We’re trying to protect air, water and the land, but

we’ve also seen the asthma, cardiovascular and pulmonary disease,” Juarez said. “Phoenix has the fifth highest ozone levels of any area in the country.” Arizona utility commissioner Andy Tobin has asked for a cost-benefit analysis. Opponents claim the mandate would result in more expensive, less reliable electricity. Surrounding states already have increased their renewable energy standards. Juarez said the Legislature has shown no interest in raising the standards, so it is time to let the voters weigh in. “I think that this has been long overdue. I don’t think that there has been any representation for the voters who have been wanting this,” she said. “So we’re excited

at Standing Rock, and by people who symbolically shut off valves in five states. Sabrina King, policy director for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Wyoming, says community

groups protesting gas wells near schools and homes could also be at risk under the new law. “Whether or not someone ever actually did any damage or went near that piece of critical infrastructure, even advocacy is being criminalized here,” says King. “So, we’re really being put in a position as citizens of not even being able to advocate for our own health and safety.” Industry groups, energy companies and some lawenforcement agencies support the bill, taking the view that stepping up penalties would protect Wyoming against what some describe as acts of eco-terrorism. The measure would make trespassing on oil and gas operations a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and fines up to $100,000. King says the bill isn’t necessary to protect

infrastructure when trespass and vandalism are already illegal under Wyoming law. She believes the goal of the measure is to discourage people and organizations from engaging in protected free speech and free association, in order to protect companies’ assets and profits. “So, it’s really about these large companies wanting to just use our government as a way to protect their corporate interests at the expense of our constitutional rights,” she says. The Wyoming bill is similar to Critical Infrastructure Protection Act legislation modeled by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a conservative group with close ties to the fossil fuel industry. A proposal to make tampering with oil and gas operations a felony in Colorado was defeated last year.

Health Care Group Slams Trump’s “Skinny” Insurance Plans

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Activist groups say President Donald Trump’s proposal to allow cheaper, low-benefit health care plans is just another attempt to upend the Affordable Care Act – and they predict it will drive overall prices up, not down. On Tuesday, the administration proposed a rule change that would exploit a loophole in the ACA that allows short-term policies that don’t comply with the minimum coverage requirements. The new rule would extend them to 364 days. Frederick Isasi, executive director of the health advocacy group Families USA, says these so-called skinny plans do not cover pre-existing conditions, have no annual or lifetime spending limits and can leave people with massive debts.

“They tend to exclude many, many more things than just maternity care,” he points out. “They exclude things like mental health care, in-patient hospital stays, things that have huge costs to families.” The president’s supporters say this will give people a low-cost option and predict only about 100,000 to 200,000 people will sign up. This follows the GOP decision to lift the individual mandate to buy insurance as part of the tax bill. Isasi believes these two moves are designed to destabilize the health-care system by siphoning off young, healthy people from the much larger insurance market. “What this threatens to do is pull some of the healthiest people who are lowest risk out of the existing pool and make coverage much more

Health-access groups worry that allowing skimpy, cheaper plans would drive up costs for the majority of consumers, especially older people with pre-existing conditions. (Cathy Yeulet/iStockphotos) expensive for folks who might be higher cost or have higher needs,” he explains. The administration

in Florida to 21 years old, with some exceptions for younger military members and law enforcement officers. “I’m an NRA member. I support the Second Amendment,” Scott said. “I’m sure there is going to be NRA members that agree with me and I’m sure that there’s NRA members that don’t agree with me, but that’s pretty much true with everything I do. “ Long guns, including the semiautomatic AR-15style assault rifle used in the February 14 attack at a high school in Parkland, can be bought by people as young as 18 under current Florida law. During Friday’s Conservative Political Action Conference, Trump said that if teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School had been allowed to carry concealed weapons, the outcome would have been much different than

the deaths of 17 students and staff in the school. But Scott, a close friend of Trump’s, said he disagrees. “I disagree with arming the teachers,” he said. “My focus is on bringing in law enforcement. I think you need to have individuals that are trained, well trained.” A school resource officer has since resigned after video showed that he did not go inside Stoneman Douglas High School even though the gunman was actively shooting. The NRA has targeted Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel on Twitter, saying he is the one that didn’t protect the children. The Broward County Sheriff’s department also is investigating a claim that several deputies stayed outside the high school during the response to the mass shooting instead of immediately going inside.

Florida Governor Breaks with Trump, NRA, Offers Gun-Control Proposals

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said he will change laws to make it “virtually impossible for anyone who has mental-issues to use a gun.” (Trimmel Gomes) By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida Gov. Rick Scott had enjoyed an A-plus rating from the National Rifle Association, but he has broken with the NRA of late by proposing to

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – Public employee union members in Washington state will be closely watching the U.S. Supreme Court case Janus v. AFSCME on Monday. Greg Devereux, executive director of the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE), says if justices side with Illinois worker Mark Janus, it would undermine a 40-year-old court decision – and labor unions in general. Janus is challenging a 1977 case that created a two-tier system for union membership, with full members and non-members who pay what are known as “fair-

6

DesertSTAR

share” fees for representation and collective bargaining. Devereux says if Janus wins, public unions could work on behalf of people who aren’t paying for that representation. “Even the ACLU has filed an amicus brief against this, saying in effect, it’s reverse compelled association,” says Devereux, “because now, members will be paying for non-members, under this scheme.” Supporters of Janus say he shouldn’t have to pay fair-share fees on First Amendment grounds. This Saturday, unions across the country will hold what they’re calling a “Working

People’s Day of Action.” WFSE, which is part of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) also are planning an event on Monday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Revenue to public employee unions could be take a hit if the courts rule against AFSCME. In 28 so-called “right to work” states, people who are covered under public-employee contracts don’t have to pay the fair-share fee for representation. This case would in essence extend that policy to public employees in the other 22 states – including February 28, 2018

Washington – which collectively represent about five million workers. Supporters of Janus have equated collective bargaining with lobbying, but Devereux insists that is a false comparison. “In terms of safety, working on workload, determining health care benefits for

individuals,” he says, “there are a tremendous number of issues in our union contracts that make a huge difference in people’s lives at the workplace.” In a similar 2016 case, justices ended in a 4-to-4 deadlock over the fate of fair-share fees.

What’s smoked in Vegas, stays in Vegas

By Desert Star Staff Las Vegas airport introduced weed disposal boxes so tourists enjoying the state’s legal marijuana don’t smuggle drugs across the border. The boxes are a ‘blunt’ way to ensure stoners on the ground aren’t also high flyers. Nevada legalized recreational marijuana but, as it’s still illegal under federal law, it isn’t okay to bring legally purchased weed across state lines. Under federal law, marijuana is classed as a Schedule 1 controlled substance, the same as heroin. McCarran International Airport has installed 13 “marijuana amnesty drop boxes,” the Las Vegas Sun reports, so travelers can offload their stash before they

go through security. Ten of the “Disposal for Prescription and Recreational Drugs” boxes are located outside the airport, and three are outside the McCarran Renta-Car. There will eventually be 20 such boxes installed. The aptly-colored green boxes are bolted to the ground and are designed in such a way that it’s impossible to put your hand in, meaning no one can collect some free ganja at the airport. It isn’t clear what happens to all the disposed drugs when the boxes are emptied. “The drawer pulls out; you drop your stuff in and you close it. You can’t really get your hand in there,” Christine Crews, McCarran spokesperson said. “If you start

tampering with them, you’d be detected pretty quickly.” In Nevada, it’s legal to possess up to an ounce (28.34g) of marijuana and an

eighth of an ounce of edible marijuana products. Weed was previously banned on all airport property in October.

Workers Rally to Defend American Dream

The Working People’s Day of Action is calling for equitable pay, affordable health care, quality schools and vibrant communities. (Matt Baran/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – Hundreds, possibly thousands of Ohio workers will join others from around the country on Saturday for rallies they say are meant to defend the American dream. On the “Working People’s Day of Action,” they’re calling for equitable pay, affordable health care, quality schools and vibrant communities. Director of Cleveland Jobs with Justice Deb Kline explains the national event is just a couple of days before the U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments in Janus v. AFSCME, a case that challenges the right of unions to collect fees from nonmembers. “The forces behind this case want to basically take away working people’s opportunities and rig the system against us,” Kline insists. “So, that’s why we are coming together to raise our collective voices, so that people are aware of what’s going to be happening.” If the Supreme Court rules in favor of the plaintiff, opponents argue that employees would benefit from www.desertstarweekly.com

the work of unions without paying for representation, which Kline says would weaken the power of organized labor. Ohio’s rally takes place at noon on Saturday at the

Statehouse in Columbus. Kline says Ohio workers will stand in solidarity with those in more than two dozen cities, including Memphis, Tenn., which is marking the

50th anniversary of the historic sanitation workers’ strike. “There were two sanitation workers who crawled in the back of a sanitation truck to get out of the pouring rain, and the truck actually crushed and killed them,” she explains. “That’s what tipped off the sanitation strike down in Memphis. Martin Luther King went down and gave the speech, and he was assassinated.” Martin Luther King, Jr., spoke before thousands of workers striking to protest poor working conditions and pay on Apr. 3, 1968. He was killed the next day. Kline says the Working People’s Day of Action will demand the same freedoms for workers that Dr. King fought for. HOROSCOPES ARIES

In the next days, weeks and months it’s important to see yourself as resourceful and valuable. Perhaps this is difficult. Make lists of all your gifts, abilities, talents, good deeds, thoughts, ideas and plans. And then all your blessings. In these your value appears. Place these lists on doors, walls and mirrors. Read and review daily. These offer you a new elf-identity as server for humanity – the task for all Aries in the Aquarian Age.

TAURUS Things hide away, especially you. Or you find someone else in hiding and join them. Someone close is quite mysterious and valuable to you. They’re knowledgeable and have the skills needed for your next creative endeavor for humanity’s future. Resources are hidden away too, though still available. Call these resources forth in prayers and mantras and sacred words, while tending to practical daily tasks. Eliminate (give away) as much as possible.

GEMINI Past friends, experiences, events, relationships, and resources are contacted, rediscovered and renewed. All of these are valuable for reasons later revealed in your future. A certain group, also from the past, holds great Love/ Wisdom (Ray 2, Gemini’s

CANCER Ponder upon how you want to be seen, known and recognized in the world and how you want to help build the new culture and civilization. You are to nurture the new era at its foundational stages. Begin your garden soon, have a worm bin, create biodynamic soil, use organic seeds. Parsley and cilantro are most important for you this year. Teach everyone what you learn. Cancer (the sign) needs to move from feeding the world to helping the world feed itself.

LEO The Earth (soil, trees, plants growing) is very important for your well-being. Make sure you’re out and about in the Sun at dawn and dusk, out with the devas and in nature - the most balanced kingdom. The Sun’s radiations strengthen your heart and mind, refocuses your enthusiasm (“filled with God”), rebalances your entire system. When we are balanced and in rhythm, practical health emerges. Where is your garden and who are your companions?

He’ll say, ‘You know the Chinese and Filipinos don’t have a drug problem. They just kill them.’” Singapore has its share of tragic stories. Consider the case of Shanmugam Murugesu. A military veteran and civil servant, he was arrested in 2003 after authorities discovered over a kilo of marijuana in his luggage following a trip abroad. Despite expressions of regret and pledging to reform his ways, the 38-year-old father of twins was summarily executed in 2005. Axios, in its exclusive report, cited five sources who have spoken with Trump about the subject, saying “he often

leaps into a passionate speech about how drug dealers are as bad as serial killers, and should all get the death penalty.” Trump reportedly commented that he would love to have a law that would grant him the power to execute all drug dealers in America, though he has privately admitted it would be nearly impossible for such draconian legislation to get the green light in the United States. Kellyanne Conway, who leads the White House’s antidrug efforts, explained the US leader’s position, saying Trump is talking about “highvolume dealers who are killing thousands of people,” according to Axios. She explained Trump’s position, pointing to the fact that some states execute people for murdering one person, yet a drug trafficker who “brings a tiny quantity of fentanyl into a community” can be responsible for a number of deaths “in just one weekend, often with impunity.” Short of executing drug dealers, Trump may support

Singapore style: Trump ‘loves’ idea of executing drug dealers

By Desert Star Staff As America grapples with its endemic drug problem, Donald Trump reportedly has a soft spot for Singapore’s no-nonsense method of handling offenders. But would such draconian measures fly in the US? After many years and billions of dollars waging a so-called ‘war on drugs,’ first mentioned by President Nixon in 1971, which seems to have only exasperated matters, President Trump appears ready to take a more eastern approach to solving the problem. According to a study by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, in 2016 approximately 20.1 million Americans 12 years or older were dealing with a substance use disorder. About 2.1 million Americans had an opioid use disorder. The Trump administration is reportedly considering the feasibility of implementing some features of Singapore’s “zero tolerance” drug policies, which includes capital

legislation “requiring a fiveyear mandatory minimum sentence for traffickers who deal as little as two grams of fentanyl,” Axios reported. Of the 64,000 people who died of drug overdoses in 2016, more than 20,000 overdosed on synthetic opioids like fentanyl, according to the National Institute for Drug Abuse. Conway told Axios reporter Jonathan Swan, “There is an appetite among many law enforcement, health professionals and grieving families that we must toughen up our criminal and sentencing statutes to match the new reality of drugs like

fentanyl, which are so lethal in such small doses.” “The president makes a distinction between those that are languishing in prison for low-level drug offenses and the kingpins hauling thousands of lethal doses of fentanyl into communities, that are responsible for many casualties in a single weekend.” Other ideas being floated by the Trump administration to confront America’s drug epidemic is to demand greater responsibility from pharmaceutical companies and provide more antidrug education in the public school system.

Gary Oldman Shines in Universal’s ‘Darkest Hour’ On Sunday, March 4, the 90th Academy Awards ceremony will air on ABCTV at 5 p.m., hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. The nine films contending for Oscar gold are: “Shape of Water,” “Dunkirk,” “Call Me By Your Name,” “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” ”The Post,” “Phantom Thread,” “Lady Bird,” “Get Out” and “Darkest Hour” starring Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill. “The Darkest Hour” was nominated for six Academy Awards--Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design. Best Makeup and Hair Styling and Best Production Design. Gary Oldman has already won the 2018 Golden Globe for his gripping, emotional portrayal as Churchill in “The Darkest Hour” and he may also garner the Best Actor Oscar as well on March 4. “The Darkest Hour” begins as Hitler’s army is storming across Europe, heading toward

Great Britain. France and Poland have fallen, and Great Britain must consider if they want to negotiate with Hitler or to suffer massive losses that would lead to an invasion of the island. At this point Winston Churchill is elected the new Prime Minister, replacing an ailing Neville Chamberlain. Churchill’s party questions his every move, and King George VI (Ben Mendelsohn) is skeptical of the choice for Prime Minister. Fortunately, his wife (Kristin Scott Thomas-”The English Patient”) has total confidence in his ability to lead. It is also clear that she and his children love and support him. Lily James (TV’s “Downton Abbey,” Disney’s “Cinderella” and “Baby Driver”) is his young and competent secretary. While the film deals with approaching war and difficult choices, there are also moments of happiness and at one point Churchill even decides to ride the underground railway where he talks with startled

passengers. This is one of the film’s highpoints. This year I am not going to make any predictions because in November I broke my femur after a fall. That was a real downer and kept me from seeing many of the films under consideration. However, I have a hunch that the makeup artist for “Darkest Hour” will win for changing actor Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill on screen. Another hunch is “The Shape of Water” may

take home the Academy Award for Best Picture since the film received the most nominations--13 in total. If you haven’t had the chance to see “Darkest Hour,” it is now available on Blu-ray +DVD +Digital from Universal. Bonus features include: Into Darkest Hour--A comprehensive overview of all that went into making this epic wartime drama, including how they maintained authenticity in depicting 1940’s London

and Gary Oldman: Becoming Churchill--Filmmakers, cast and crew marvel at Gary Oldman’s layered, transformative performance. Gary Oldman also weighs in on the most significant challenge of portraying a man as iconic and complicated as Winston Churchill. The final feature is a commentary with director Joe Wright. Running time is 125 minutes. Rating: PG-13 for some thematic material.

Trump Budget Pushes 98% Cut to Decades-Old Public Lands Program By Desert Star Staff ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A 54-year-old conservation program that has helped provide outdoor recreation access across New Mexico and the nation would be all but eliminated in the 2019 budget President Donald Trump has sent to Congress. The Land and Water Conservation Fund gets its money from offshore oil and gas leases, but the proposed budget would divert 98 percent of those funds. Land Tawney, president and CEO of the group Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, said for decades, the program has been successful in increasing access to parks and public lands by diverse groups of people. “You know, there’s nothing

www.desertstarweekly.com

more American than our public lands, and the Land and Water Conservation Fund helps provides opportunities for all Americans to enjoy these public lands that belong to all of us,” Tawney said. “And the idea of cutting this program doesn’t make any sense to us, and I don’t think it’s going to make any sense to the American people.” In New Mexico, LWCF funds have helped conserve such places as the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge and the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. The budget proposal would use LWCF funding to help address the maintenance backlog in national parks instead. In addition to funding public lands access, Susan Torres with the New Mexico

New Mexico has received $37.8 million from the now-threatened Land and Water Conservation Fund since it was established in 1965. (santefehorse.org) Wildlife Federation said LWCF grants are used as matching money to build

February 28, 2018

community soccer fields and baseball diamonds. “There are these parks that rely on LWCF funding to maintain their access and make them safe for kids throughout the city,” Torres said. “So I think that that’s one of the things that I personally think is very important about LWCF is making sure that our parks are safe and equitable for everyone to be using them.” Outdoor recreation is the nation’s third-largest economic driver, generating $887 billion each year. Torres said ending the program would leave many current parcels of land unprotected and outdoor restoration projects unfinished. “So there could be a

lot of restoration programs throughout New Mexico that don’t go funded - wetlands rehabilitation, increased access to places in Rio Grande Del Norte where people can go fishing,” she said. “A lot of those places where we’re working to get more access, those things could just kind of fall to the wayside and cut people out from where they should have access to.” The Land and Water Conservation Fund has never received full funding, as Congress often diverts the money for other purposes. In recent years, funding has hovered around one-third of the full, authorized level.

Masters Shine on New Sets

A plethora of outstanding titles featuring classic and emerging artists have been released recently, including a highly-anticipated release from The Doors, a collection celebrating singer-pianist Nina Simone, a tribute to power pop favorite Matthew Sweet and several strong movie soundtracks. Artist: The Doors Title: The Doors: Live At The Isle Of Wight 1970 (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: The Doors Tell me more: The Doors remain one of rock’s most groundbreaking and original bands of any era. So anytime new music emerges from The Doors’ short but prolific career there is a bona fide reason to celebrate. The last known unseen performance of The Doors in existence has been released, and it truly offers up an astounding experience for discerning fans of the Los Angeles-spawned quartet. “The Doors: Live At The Isle Of Wight 1970” features the group coming out on stage at 2 a.m. on Aug. 30, 1970 in a performance that featured an understandably-reserved Jim Morrison (the singer had been the focus of a well-publicized obscenity trial in Miami). But while Morrison spends most of the set positioned close to his microphone and rarely even opens his eyes, the concert itself is bolstered by the power of the band’s songs, strength of the musicianship and Morrison’s emotive vocals. Highlights include a driving “Break On Through (To The Other Side)” and a 14-minute take on “Light My Fire.” In addition to the concert film, there is a bonus featurette titled “This Is The End” anchored by 17 minutes of interviews conducted by the film’s original director (Academy Award-winner Murray Lerner) with guitarist Robby Krieger, drummer John Densmore and original Doors manager Bill Siddons. There is additional archival interview footage with the late keyboardist Ray Manzarek from 2002. “The Doors: Live At The Isle Of Wight 1970” is available on Blu-ray+CD (the version reviewed here),

Only 25 at the time, the North Carolina native was already a talented singer blessed with a rich voice and virtuoso skills at the keyboard to match. At the session she recorded what would be her first hit “Porgy (I Loves You, Porgy)” and a wide range of other material showcasing her already-keen musical talents. Take the buoyant “Love Me or Leave Me,” where her contralto soprano and baroque-meetsjazz piano skills are blended artfully. She could also deliver moving and hushed ballads, as evidenced by her version of Rodgers & Hart’s “Little Girl Blue” and an ambitious instrumental interpretation of the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein show tune “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” On the rousing jazz-meetsblues instrumental “African Mailman,” she pounds on the keys and conjures up a storm accompanied by bassist Jimmy Bond and drummer Al “Tootie” Heath. The newlyissued collection comes just in time to celebrate Simone’s upcoming induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 14. Sadly, Simone died at the age of 70 in April 2003. Astronaut Mark Kelly and his wife Gabby Giffords were the guest speakers on Feb. 23rd in the Emerald Ball Room at the Renaissance Esmeralda Hotel and Spa. Almost everyone knows the former U. S. Congresswoman, Gabby Giffords, that was shot in the head and made national headlines with her recovery. Her husband is Mark Kelly, a Retired American Astronaut, and U.S. Navy Captain. His brother, Scott Kelly, was a Desert Townhall Speaker last year who spoke about his year in space and another six months in space before that. Mark Kelly spoke at the Desert Town Hall Youth session. He was preceded by another astronaut, Megan McArthur. McArthur talked about her life as an astronaut and how she became a woman astronaut. She told about the training it takes to become part of NASA. Megan said that woman go thru the same training as men and exercise routines are a daily need. She asked the 150 high www.desertstarweekly.com

school teenagers if they had any questions. Hands raised and many got up to ask a question. Some were about being a woman astronaut and others about her life and what she does as an Astronaut. McArthur announced the next speaker to talk to the teenagers who were the featured speaker, Mark Kelly. He said he was so happy to be there and would forego a speech to answer questions. Mark said that his usual speech would be about hard work, determination and an aim in life. He said he was not smart in school but took a lesson from his hard-working mother and her dedication to caring for her family that he decided to put more effort into school. His dream as a young child was to be an Astronaut. He said to find a passion, learn from others in the field and if you are not happy with what you do, you will not be successful. One of the questions by the teens was if he was scared to go into space. He said everyone has fears and its how you deal with them that is so important and that everyone has a different way

“The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk” Makes A Joyous Landing

L-R: Marc Antolin (Marc Chagall,) James Gow (musician,) Ian Ross (Composer and Music Director,) & Daisy Maywood (Bella Chagall). Photos by Steve Tanner Kneehigh and Bristol Old Vic have sent a theatrical gift across the pond presenting us with the U.S. premiere of the award-winning “The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk.” The word “brilliant” is often overused, but in this case, this highly stylized abstract play about the life and times of Marc Chagall and his wife Bella, written by Daniel Jamieson and directed by Emma Rice, aptly describes this dazzling production. The story was written 25 years ago by Jamieson, who played the lead role, while director Rice played Bella. Her directing brings out the heart and soul of this amazing couple, illuminating the profound influence his Jewish roots and his relationship had on his magnificent body of work. Casting the extraordinarily talented Marc Antolin as Chagall and equally talented Daisy Maywood as Bella was a stroke of genius as these two actors bring to life, in a most

visceral and acrobatic way, the profoundly loving relationship between these historic lovers. Performed on a fascinating tilted set, almost resembling a jungle gym, designer Sophia Clist, who also created the period costumes, put together a series of set pieces that are interchangeable. The result is it’s almost like watching a circus act as the two performers fly around the stage, using long ropes to assume poses we see in some of Chagall’s paintings. Music director and composer Ian Ross helps drive the story forward through a haunting Klezmer* influenced musical score. At times the songs are sung in four-part harmony with composer Ross, musician/ singer James Gow, and Marc and Bella who, at other times, sing beautiful duets. What is particularly fascinating is that the actors perform in white face, and different disciplines or movements are employed from ballet to mime bringing to mind

his reputation begins to flourish and with that reputation comes more acceptance from Bella’s wealthy parents who own three jewelry stores. After two years he returns and proposes marriage informing the patient Bella, “I learned everything I needed to know in 10 minutes at the Louvre.” His mother is not sure about his career choice but tells her friends that her son wants to be a painter. One friend says, “Do you think he could paint my house before Passover?” There’s a charming wedding scene where the bride and groom sit in a chair within a chair, which in traditional Jewish weddings is lifted into the air by the guests. The dance sequences are exquisitely choreographed by Rice and Etta Murfitt, who work within a Russian/Jewish theme. Chagall continues to enshrine their loving moments

Jew. Further conflict in Europe is imminent and anti-Semitic attacks become rampant. Chagall is stopped on the street by a soldier, “Are you a Jew?” After a long hesitation, “Me a Jew? Why do you insult me? “Then you may pass.” Bella’s family loses their jewelry shops and life in Vitebsk is no longer recognizable. Drawing on mythology and the landscape of dreams, his paintings reflect the world around him becoming glorious illuminations of love, loss, and displacement while still maintaining a thread of optimism. With all the chaos around them, Bella asks her husband why he smiles at people. He replies, “I smile at passersby just to feel the warmth of their smiles.” A quote by Marc Chagall sums up this production’s poetical depiction of his relationship and work: “I

Marc Antolin as Marc Chagall paints one of his famous paintings of a rabbi. Photos by Steve Tanner Young Chagall’s initial interest in painting springs from a fellow student at the Hebrew school he was attending in Vitebsk. He saw him drawing and asked how he learned to do that. His schoolmate suggested that he pick up an art book at the library and copy the drawings which he does, thus embarking on the road to becoming a pioneer of modernism and the only major Jewish artist. Later, he meets up with Yehuda (Yuri) Pen, a realist painter operating a small art school specializing in portraits. Chagall has no money for lessons, but Pen recognizes his talent and teaches him for free. However, the young painter soon realizes that painting portraits is too stifling. The magical love story between Chagall and teenager Bella Rosenfeld begins in 1909 in Vitebsk, where they meet at the home of a mutual friend. Their attraction is instant but future plans are put on hold as Chagall tells her he must go to Paris to paint. It is there that February 28, 2018

He captures that essence by drenching the stage and actors with the intense colors used by Chagall, right down to pinpointing their faces with a kaleidoscope of changing hues. Times are becoming difficult and political unrest begins in their tiny town with Jews being accused of spying for the Germans so the young couple pack up their belongings and flee to St. Petersburg. Life is not easy for them, money is scarce, and her husband is gone from dawn to dusk. By this time they have a baby girl named Ida and Bella, who is highly educated, spends her days in frustration for not being able to devote time to writing. It is during this period that the Russian Revolution is heating up and Marc hopes that those in power will recognize his work. Report: Local Democracy “Run Over” by Lyft, Uber

Drivers for ride-sharing companies such as Uber and Lyft are hitting traffic when they push for more protections, a new report finds. (SounderBruce/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE — Ride-sharing companies such as Uber and Lyft have been a big boon for folks trying to get around town, but a new report says these companies are running over local democracy. The National Employment

Law Project’s “Uber State Interference” report details how transportation network companies have bought, bullied and bamboozled their way into states. Report co-author Rebecca Smith, senior counsel for the project, said Uber and Lyft have

more lobbyists nationwide than Amazon, Microsoft and Walmart combined. She said one of the companies’ favorite tactics for getting around regulations in cities was to tell consumers that cities were trying to ban them from operating.

“In reality, what was happening is that the cities were imposing some reasonable regulation on the companies so that they could fit better into an overall transportation system that the cities have to and do regulate,” Smith explained. Smith said legislators and city council members across the country told her they felt bullied by the companies. According to the report, Uber spent nearly $75,000 and Lyft spent more than $50,000 on lobbying in Washington state in the first half of 2017. Ride-sharing companies say they make transportation more efficient and safer, especially by helping to keep people who have been drinking from driving. The report said Uber and Lyft have been bad for workers too. Because drivers are classified as independent contractors, they aren’t entitled to protections as employees, such as a guaranteed minimum wage.

Smith said these companies treat drivers like employees but skirt laws providing them basic safeguards as workers. “In a highly dangerous occupation, workers are not entitled to workers’ compensation if they are injured on the job,” she said. “Workers have no discrimination protections and, as some academics have said, it seems like discrimination is hard-wired into this system with the star-rating system.” Smith said drivers who receive bad ratings can be fired. In an unprecedented move in 2015, the city of Seattle passed a law allowing drivers for ride-sharing companies to unionize. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has sued the city to stop the law from going into effect, arguing that the National Labor Relations Act excludes independent contractors organizing.

Long-Planned Gun Control Rally Takes on New Urgency

By Desert Star Staff ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota legislative session is beginning with an emphasis on gun control. The mass shooting at a high school in Florida brought hundreds to the State Capitol for a rally on Tuesday, and another demonstration is planned for Thursday afternoon. The rally is set to follow a morning of meetings between constituents and lawmakers who want better gun laws. The rally was organized by Protect Minnesota, where Executive Director Rev. Nancy Nord Bence said the nonprofit group’s phones have not stopped ringing since last week’s shooting. She’s expecting a big turnout. “Some months ago, I was hoping I’d get 200. Wow, is that not going to be the case anymore,” Nord Bence said.

“I think it’s going to be big.” Before the 2 p.m. rally in the rotunda, Protect Minnesota will announce the introduction of two new bills addressing gun violence. Nord Bence said Protect Minnesota opposes the “stand your ground” and permit-less carry bills that were in committee last year. It’s pushing legislators to hear a bill that would mandate criminal background checks before all gun purchases. “We are not anti-gun,” she said. “We are anti-gun violence and so is the vast majority of the population that owns guns.” A new Quinnipiac University poll shows twothirds of American voters support stricter gun control, the highest percentage the poll has ever measured. Nord Bence said the young survivors from Marjory

AR-15s were used in mass shootings in Newtown, San Bernardino, Las Vegas and Parkland. (Jonathan James/FlickR) Stoneman Douglas High School have inspired other students, parents and teachers to get involved. “And here’s the sad

reality: If it doesn’t change this time, there will be a next time and a time after that and a time after that,” she said. Protect Minnesota and

other anti-gun violence groups are also participating in the national student-led rally locally and in Washington, D.C., on March 24.

Victims of Western Union Wire Fraud claim extended

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO – California Attorney General Xavier Becerra today reminded Californians who were the victims of wire fraud via Western Union to submit a claim in order to be considered for a refund payment. The original deadline to submit a claim was February 12, 2018 and has now been extended to May 31, 2018. “For over 13 years, Western Union failed to prevent scammers from using its wire transferring services to take advantage of consumers. That is unacceptable,” said Attorney General Becerra. “Today, in light of the new, extended application deadline, we are reminding all Californians who were tricked into wiring money via Western Union to apply for a refund. Hardworking families who were defrauded by Western Union’s services deserve justice.”

Last year, Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced a multistate settlement with Western Union. The settlement resolved an investigation that focused on complaints by consumers who were tricked into using Western Union’s wire transfer service to send money to third parties involved in schemes to defraud consumers. The states had alleged that, despite many warnings that its system was being used for frauds, Western Union failed to take corrective action to protect consumers. The multistate settlement includes a permanent injunction requiring Western Union to establish an anti-fraud program that will prevent scam artists from using Western Union’s wire transfer services to victimize consumers. In a related, but separate agreement with the Federal Trade Commission and U.S. Department of Justice,

Western Union agreed to pay $586 million in refunds to victims of wire fraud. California consumers who made a wire transfer through Western Union between January 1, 2004 and January 19, 2017 may be eligible for more than $65 million in refunds. It is from this pool of federal settlement money that prior victims can apply for refunds. Attorney General Becerra has also released a guide for consumers on the different types of scams and advice on how to remain vigilant against wire fraud. Attorney General Becerra strongly encourages consumers to report scams to the Office of the Attorney General’s Public Inquiry Unit by calling (800) 952-5225 or by submitting a complaint at oag.ca.gov/report. Information about refund eligibility and the process for filing a claim is available at www. westernunionremission.com.

born in California on Mount Tamalpais in Marin, and Sierra ski resorts have carried on the tradition, turning winter ski runs into sensational summertime bike trails (Mammoth Mountain even stages an annual Kamikaze Bike Games). Road cycling enthusiasts can compete in gran fondos, longdistance and multiday events throughout the state, from Wine Country to the desert. • Mountain and Rock Climbing: Yosemite remains the granddaddy of American climbing experiences, the site of evolutions that have redefined the sport, and a place that continues to draw world-class climbers from around the globe to push the limits of strength and endurance. California has many other peak destinations, too, like majestic, snowcovered Mount Shasta; Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the lower 48; and Joshua Tree National Park, with its surreal desert landscape. • Trekking: If you’re looking for more than just a walk in the woods, how about taking on the storied Pacific Crest Trail? It begins just north of the Mexican border and doesn’t end until it hits Canada, 2,600 miles away. • Whitewater Rafting: Sierra snowmelt moves California to the top of the class … Class V, that is. That’s the designation for the scariest, gnarliest rapids you can navigate and live to tell about it. You’ll find them at places like Cherry Creek, Clavey Falls on the Tuolumne River, the North Fork Yuba River, and the California Salmon River. • Shark Diving: Ready to go nose to nose with a great white shark? Then there are outfits in San Diego and San

Francisco who can make your dreams (nightmares?) come true. Clamber into a shark cage and get up-close and personal with one of the world’s most fearsome predators. • Skydiving: If a window seat just isn’t good enough, how about jumping out of an airplane at 10,000 feet? California has plenty of options, including the chance to take it up another level with Skydive Monterey Bay’s 18,000 foot jumps, which give you plenty of time to take in the fantastic coastal vistas. Or practice your aerial moves in one of the state’s indoor windtunnel skydiving facilities. • Paragliding and Hang Gliding: The Torrey Pines Gliderport in San Diego is one of the world’s top spots for nonmotorized flight. Set atop the 300-foot cliffs above Black’s Beach, and adjacent to renowned Torrey Pines Golf Course, the views are sublime. • Flying: Slip the surly bonds of earth in any number of flying machines around California. You can choose from hands-on acrobatic stunt flying to roaring through the skies aboard a vintage WWII fighter plane. Or skim just feet above the ocean in an ultralight or soar on desert thermal winds in a glider. Just be sure to fasten that seatbelt. • Auto Racing: You’ll also want to buckle up for some high-octane excitement, rocketing around a speedway in a Formula One-style racecar or an exotic fantasy car like a McLaren or Lamborghini. You can start your engines with the Allen Berg Racing School at the Laguna Seca Raceway in Salinas or Exotics Racing in Southern California. • ATVs: Off-road warriors will want to check out Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area. It’s an ATV

Try to Escape From Alcatraz in San Francisco or take on the Graniteman Challenge in Mammoth Lakes. Or perhaps the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon, with its live bands along the course, is more your speed. Trail runners will want to take note of events like the Dipsea Race in Marin, the country’s oldest trail run, dating back to 1905, and the pulse-pounding Mount Baldy Run-to-the-Top race, where the route gains 4,000 feet in just over seven miles. • Flyboarding: From lakes to ocean, flyboarding is taking off. This new technology uses water jets to propel riders up to 50 feet in the air in Ironman-like fashion. No crime-fighting required. • Zip Lines and Bungee Jumping: If you like your adventure hanging by a thread, California offers plenty of opportunities for zip lining and bungee jumping, from the redwoods to Gold Country to Catalina Island. For true bragging rights, adrenaline junkies can also catch the Winter Wave. That’s the wintertime experience of skiing and surfing in the same day. Yup, thanks to the proximity of ski areas like Big Bear and Mt. Watermanto the SoCal coastline, it’s all possible. And for those who aren’t on their way to X Games fame, not to worry … just about all of the above activities have entry-level experiences available for novices. The only thing you have to fear is fear itself. And spiders. www.desertstarweekly.com

85% of Americans unhappy with Congress, most think it serves lobbyists

By Desert Star Staff The overwhelming majority of Americans, irrespective of party allegiance, holds a dismal opinion of Congress, a fresh poll shows. It found 89 percent of Democrats and 82 percent of Republicans disapprove of the legislature’s work. The new poll, published by the Associated PressNORC Center on Monday, revealed that a total of 85 percent of Americans believe the Congress’s job is below par. The attitude to the Republican-controlled legislature does not change much across party lines. The number of Democrats that held an unfavorable view of Congress, 89 percent, is only seven percentage points higher than that of Republicans, at 82 percent. While the figures are a bit more reassuring when it comes to the members of Congress, the immediate representatives of those surveyed, they are still hardly anything to brag about. Only 44 percent of Americans approve of the work their Congressman or Congresswoman is doing on Capitol Hill, 41 percent of Democrats and

half of Republicans. Even if some may think that the Congress’s workload is enough, it does not mean they are passing all good laws. Fewer than 20 percent of Americans believe there is merit to the lawmakers’ legislative work, while over a third of all respondents think it is mostly wrong. The remainder doesn’t assess it as either positive or negative. The NORC poll was conducted between 15 and 19 February. The plunging ratings aren’t a product of the Trump era and its partisan skirmishes. Americans have long been disenchanted with Congressional politics. A glance at the Gallup Congress approval chart through the years will show that it rarely climbed over the 20 percent threshold since 2010. After a record 84 percent approval in 2002, the rating has been on a steep decline, reaching a new low in November 2013 after it slipped to just nine percent. A survey conducted by Stanford University and the University of California-Santa Barbara, together with the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research in 20152017. Purports to explain

the disdain of the American public with their elected legislators by an enormous gap between who they are supposed to serve and who they do help, according to Americans themselves. “Large majorities in both parties report lawmakers should pay attention to the majority of Americans but believe lawmakers pay attention to donors and elites. Rare in 2018, both selfidentified Republicans and Democrats agree,” Trevor Tompson, director of the APNORC Center, stated in a

press release on Monday. What the researchers identify as the cause of the problem is that 65 percent of Americans believe that their representative in Congress should pay attention to a majority in the US, while only 18 percent of respondents think that it is what they are doing. The part of the population most catered-for by the lawmakers are the lobbyists that “gave money to last election campaign,” according to the survey. Sixtysix percent of Americans believe that Congress pays

attention to lobbyists, while only 11 percent agree it should be like that. While Congress, at its current 20 percent approval rating, according to Gallup, is safe from breaking records anytime soon. President Donald Trump, with his 38.4 percent job approval rating during his first year in office, became the first president to go below 40 percent in his first year, with his nearest contender in this respect being Bill Clinton, at 49.3 percent.

Small Ways You Can Change Your Routine for a Better You

By Desert Star Staff Sometimes the smallest changes to your daily habits can have the biggest impact on your wellness. With that in mind, here are a few easy ways you can change your routine for a better you. Sit Less: Does your job require you to sit still most of the day? Even if you work out regularly, an otherwise sedentary lifestyle can be bad for your health. Be sure to get up throughout the day in order to stretch and walk around. It only takes a minute to reap the benefits, so don’t skip these breaks. Consider installing an app on your phone to remind you at periodic intervals when it’s time to move, and if possible, alter your workstation to make it easier to assist in

this effort. Standing desks, treadmill desks and even biking desks can keep you active throughout the day. Rethink Brushing: Good oral health includes taking great care of your gums -- and research shows that harmful bacteria and plaque that lurk below the gum line can have a big impact. “A healthy mouth needs healthy gums, and even diligent brushing may not remove all harmful plaque,” said Sarah Thiel, RDH. “Toothpaste that goes below the gum line to destroy plaque bacteria in the mouth is a great addition to your brushing routine. Because if you’re not taking care of your gums, you’re not taking care of you.” Consider switching to

a toothpaste specifically developed to improve gum health, like Crest Gum Detoxify, which uses Activated Foam Technology to seek out harmful bacteria in hard to reach places in order to neutralize it, even below the gum line. More information can be found at Crest.com. Spice it Up: If you rely on fat and sugar for the bulk of flavor in your cooking, consider improving your seasoning routines for more nutritional meals. Reduce your reliance on these ingredients without getting bored by adding healthier boosts of flavor to dishes. Chop fresh herbs onto your pasta or salad, add spices to your stew, include garlic, ginger and even hot peppers in your stir-fry.

Drink More Water: What are you drinking during the day? If the answer is juice and soda, consider replacing at least some of that with water. Water doesn’t have to be flavorless. Infuse your water bottle or pitcher with your favorite fruits, vegetables and herbs. From cucumber and strawberry slices to watermelon and mint, you can have fun while hydrating, without resorting to high calorie beverages that offer little or no nutritional value. Focusing on sweeping lifestyle changes can leave anyone feeling overwhelmed. For lasting and meaningful impacts on your health and wellness, find small tweaks that you can make to your daily routine. Appeal to House Hunters With Smart Home Upgrades

By Desert Star Staff From smart thermostats to remotely controlled showers, connected homes are all the rage for today’s homeowners and those looking to make a purchase, providing easy opportunities to boost your profit when you sell. Over half of Millennials (57 percent) believe that smart home technology is a good investment in their home, according to a recent survey by “Better Homes and Gardens.” Upgrading to include connected items can make your home more appealing to this “next generation” of homebuyers in particular. If you’re looking to sell, here are some of the latest and greatest smart home upgrades to have on your radar. Climate Control: Your thermostat is responsible for half your energy bill -- more than appliances and electronics -- so make sure to choose one wisely. Consider installing a smart thermostat, which learns your temperature preferences, and can save energy by turning heating and cooling on and off, based on the weather outside, your home’s energy profile and more. Potential homebuyers will love the energy savings, as well as the ability to control the thermostat from anywhere with their devices. A Hands-Free Faucet: Imagine the convenience of having a kitchen faucet turn water on or off, without a touch. Faucets with hands-free technology, such as Moen’s MotionSense Wave singlesensor models, allow users to easily activate the faucet with the wave of a hand. Great for when your hands are too full or messy to turn on the faucet, the technology also minimizes the spread of dirt and germs, since there’s no need to touch the faucet to start the flow of water. It’s just the type of smart upgrade to attract house

hunters of all ages -- and easy on the wallet, with options available for under $300. Bright Lighting: Smart lighting dimmer and sensor systems allow you to turn lights on and off remotely with a smartphone, and can be customized to perform certain actions, such as slowly growing brighter as you wake up or turning off automatically when you leave your home – providing added convenience and customization for prospective buyers. These systems are especially useful when you’re traveling– allowing you to turn your lights on and off remotely, so your home

doesn’t look empty while you’re away. Picture showing potential buyers how they can control all of the lights in the home with one device, or turn off the lights after they’re snuggled up in bed – and get ready for the offers to roll in. A Digital Shower: An updated bathroom is a huge selling point for potential buyers. If you’re planning a renovation, enhancing your space with a digital shower can make a big difference for your family now and for future homebuyers. To provide the ultimate in personalization, select a system such as U by Moen, the first Wi-Fi/

cloud-based digital shower on the market, which allows users to precisely set shower temperature and flow with an in-shower digital controller, or from the smartphone app. Plus, it can be voice activated with products like Amazon Alexa, for a connected home experience. The Power of Serendipity Fuels North Coast Repertory Theatre Comedy

L-R: Yolanda Franklin, Lisel Gorell Getz, Ava-Hill, Kevin Hafso, Koppman Anne, Gee Byrd. Photo by Aaron Rumley By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association Beauty, it is often said, is in the eye of the beholder. Serendipity, however, is often just being in the right place at the right time. So there’s a definite correlation when it comes to the North Coast Repertory’s (NCRT) current heartwarming comedy production about truth, misinformation, and understanding. “This Random World”, written by prolific playwright Steven Dietz, draws from the idiosyncrasies of ‘American Millennials’ and ‘Generation X’ -ers on how they process information, situations, and unexpected opportunities in our digital age. Directed with an assured hand by NCRT’s artistic director, David Ellenstein, the cast of “This Random World” – most of whom have San Diego connections either educationally from USD/ Old Globe MFA programs or from other regional southern California theatres – are a cast of skilled ensemble veterans. Ellenstein, has a penchant for selecting interesting, bold and thought-provoking plays and playwrights to fill slots in his season line-ups at NCRT. The story in short, follows, each character’s journey in this sometime biting, but always, insightful, intimate, non-linear comedy of serendipitous intersects and connections. Whether, it’s Scottie Ward an older, ailing lady (Ann Gee Byrd) who is making plans to take one last journey abroad with her paid travel companion Bernadette (Volanda Franklin), while her daughter Beth Ward (Lisel Gorell-Getz), who is unhappy in her present situation, flees to Nepal via a get-away trip as way of escaping her shallow domestic life,. There she meets Gary (Patrick Zeller), a fellow American also traveling in Nepal who briefly connect and then go their www.desertstarweekly.com

own separate ways. Then there is her brother Tim Ward (Kevin Hafso Koppman), who carries his laptop everywhere he goes, who decides, as a joke, to post his own obituary on his website. Not a very adult thing to do, however, digitally-saturated Gen-exers and millennials often do a lot of strange and unusual things when hunched over a keyboard. Tim’s post sets in motion the thrust of this tale of misunderstood messages (a favorite ploy of many Shakespearean comedies as well) only to discover it’s not that easy to debunk a post on the internet. Once messages are launched, truth and understanding take on a life of their own. When Claire (Diana Irvine), an ex-girlfriend of Tim’s learns about the post, she gets all sentimental over his “death” and tries contacting his family. When Tim tries to tell everyone that was just a joke, no one believes him. They think they’re dealing with a ghost or an imposter. Yep, some of us live in the Hollywood-created reality zone of Zombie Apocalypse, the Walking Dead, and such. When Tim actually confronts Rhonda (Ava Hill) the staff employee at the mortuary she thinks Tim is an apparition. After all she read his obituary on the internet. Truth dies quickly on the internet but fake news thrives and spreads like the plague, even on our stages, silver screens and on TV. Despite all of the implausibility of the plot, I remember the sage words of my grad school professor Charles Champlin, the Arts and Entertainment Editor of the Los Angeles Times, back in the 60’s who said, “if an audience accepts the original premise of the story, then they will buy the ‘bits’ that go along with overall narrative.” He also cautioned, “I don’t want any of you to become verbal vaudevillian style writers either. Always respect the

efforts of your fellow creative artists. Be critical but fair.” Words to live by for a critic. The combination of a talented cast of pros, under the creative direction of David Ellenstein, delivers a first-rate evening of sharp comedy, punctuated with moments of poignancy, with which all audiences can relate. To really enjoy this production

just let the skills of the actors work their on-stage magic while you review some of your own life’s serendipitous moments. It’s cathartic. As usual the technical credits at NCRT are always top drawer. When Set Designer Marty Burnett, Lighting Designer Matt Novotny, Costume Designer Elisa Benzoni, Sound Designer

Melanie Chen Cole, and Prop Designer Holly Gillard, are on the job, one can rely that a stellar production will be the result. Christopher M. Williams stage manages. “This Random World” performs at the North Coast Repertory Theatre, in Solana Beach, CA through March 18, 2018.
