UC Berkeley Students Riot Riot breaks out at UC Berkeley amid protest of Breitbart editor’s speech By Desert Star Staff A protest turned violent at the University of California at Berkeley, resulting in the cancellation of a talk from editor of Breitbart News Milo Yiannopoulos. Milo Yiannopoulos was expected speak against “sanctuary campuses,” which promised to protect
undocumented students in wake of President Donald Trump’s tough stance on illegal immigration. In response to the violence, UC Berkeley Police have warned students to “leave the area immediately,” as they are bringing in “additional resources.” Hours after a lockdown was declared across campus
by police, many orders of dispersal, including several five-minute warnings went largely ignored.Once those backup forces arrived, police used a bullhorn to warn protesters they would be subject to force, “including but not limited to chemical agents, batons and less lethal munitions.”KTVU reported
By Desert Star Staff The US President Donald Trump has warned Tehran that a military option is ‘not off the table’ as a response to the latest alleged missile test by Iran. When asked whether the US would consider using force to respond to Tehran, Trump told reporters on Thursday that “nothing is off the table.” On January 30, Fox News reported, citing US officials, that Iran had conducted tests of its medium-range ballistic missiles.Washington condemned the move, saying the test undermined “security, prosperity and stability throughout and beyond the Middle East” essentially putting “lives at risk.”
“We are officially putting Iran on notice,” Trump’s National Security Advisor, Mike Flynn, warned. The US claimed the test violated UN Security Council Resolution 2231 which called on Iran “not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles.” Trump said that instead of conducting tests, Iran “should have been thankful” for the P5+1 deal brokered by key world powers including the US, which the new US President repeatedly called a “disaster.” Tehran emphatically dismissed Trump’s threats saying, “The American government will understand that threatening Iran is useless,” Ali Akbar Velayati, foreign
policy advisor to the Iran’s Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, told reporters. Last month Tehran also warned Washington against dishonoring the so-called P5+1 deal which resolved a years-long deadlock on the Iranian nuclear program. Iran said if Trump disrespect the agreements, it would consider resuming the nuclear program at a higher level. Oil prices jump as Trump administration puts Iran ‘on notice’ Global crude prices rose on Thursday after US National Security Advisor Michael Flynn said Washington is putting Tehran “on notice” in

Executive Order Leaves Refugees in Danger, Advocates Say
Vetting of refugees involves three government agencies and takes 18 to 24 months. (U.S. Dept. of State) By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – Groups that work to resettle refugees in the United States say the executive order signed by President Trump leaves thousands of refugees in limbo. The order, signed late Friday afternoon, halts the resettlement of all refugees in the United States for 120 days and those from Syria until further notice, and it cuts the number that will be resettled this year by more than half. According to Jennifer Sime, the senior vice president for U.S. programs at the International Rescue Committee, that leaves some 60,000 refugees already in the pipeline wondering if they’ll be able to come here or not. “Many of those people have been already approved and are literally just waiting to get on a plane, and they’re living in difficult circumstances either in urban settings
where they have very few resources or in refugee camps,” she explained. Refugees, immigrants and even green-card holders from seven predominantly Muslim countries who were in transit when the order was signed were detained on arrival, and in some cases sent back. The executive order calls for “extreme vetting” of all applicants for refugee status. But Sime points out that the U.S. vetting process already is the most stringent in the world, taking 18 to 24 months and involving three government agencies including Homeland Security. “There are many places in the process to catch any discrepancies in the stories of the background of the refugees so it’s already a very, very tight system,” she said. Under the executive order, Syrian refugees will be denied entry to the United States
“until further notice” regardless of any vetting process. Last year the U.S. settled just 10,000 Syrians, far fewer than most other Western countries. Sime believes the United States has a moral responsibility to do more.
“It is part of our tradition, and this country was founded by refugees and immigrants who came fleeing from all parts of the world, and we’re not really living up to our values and our history,” lamented Sime. While the executive order
was promoted as a way to prevent terrorists from entering the country, a study by the Cato Institute found the likelihood of an American being killed by a terrorist entering the country as a refugee to be one in 3.64 billion per year.

national level to transfer federal lands to the states. Susan Torres, the communications director of the New Mexico Wildlife Federation says this hotbutton issue is getting some traction now that Republicans control both Congress and the White House. “Public-land seizure is in the official GOP platform, so it seems to be gaining momentum,” she said. “We’re really against that because selling off our public lands can mean that it goes to a private interest and then the public can’t access them anymore.” Advocates of public-land transfer argue that states should have more say over the fate of land within their borders. However, several bills have failed in the state Legislature over the past few years. Nonetheless, Public Lands Commissioner Aubrey
Dunn recently introduced a bill advocating the transfer of federal mineral rights to the state. President Trump has come out against publiclands transfer. But Garrett VeneKlausen, executive director of the federation, says he’s worried the president will change his position. “We’ve already seen legislation trying to get land transfer to the states introduced into Congress,” he said. “Without his veto power, we could literally lose a significant portion of our public lands in this administration. It is a dire threat right now.” In 2016, several counties passed resolutions to keep public lands under federal control, including Santa Fe, San Miguel, Bernalillo and Taos counties. This year supporters are hoping the city of Albuquerque will do the same.
said in response to the riots. Students were not the only ones to have objected to Yiannopoulos event at the university. After the editor accepted the invitation, a group of faculty members urged Chancellor Nicholas Dirks to cancel the event. More than 100 Berkeley faculty blamed the editor for provoking “incitement, harassment, and defamation.” “Although we object strenuously to Yiannopoulos’s views — he advocates white supremacy, transphobia, and misogyny — it is rather his harmful conduct to which we call attention in asking for the cancellation of this event,”

Today, the Berkeley College Republicans’ constitutional right to free speech was silenced by criminals and thugs seeking to cancel Milo Yiannopoulos’ tour. Their success is a defeat for civilized society and the free exchange of ideas on college campuses across America. We would like to thank UCPD and the university administration for doing all they could to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Martin Scorsese read Shusaku Endo’s historical novel about 17th century Jesuit missionaries in feudal Japan in 1989. As a Roman Catholic, he was deeply moved by the story and optioned it, but it has taken nearly thirty years for him to fulfill his spiritual and cinematic quest. The result is a masterwork and well worth the wait. The noted director grew up in New York’s Little Italy and was an altar boy in his youth. He now considers himself a lapsed Catholic, but his devotion to Christ still burns bright and shines throughout
his latest work about faith, doubt, despair and devotion. In a recent interview, Andrew Garfield, who plays the young Jesuit priest Father Sebastiao Rodrigues, said, “I remember sitting on set one day after I had shot all my takes…. And I looked over at Marty’s working, and he was in a courtyard, sitting there in what looked like a prayer position. And on the monitor in front of him is an image of Christ. And I thought, ‘That was his life. His whole life. Cinema and Christ. It’s everything.” “Silence” begins as two young Portuguese Jesuit
priests (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) seek to go to Japan to minister to Catholic converts there. They also want to try to find their spiritual mentor, Father Christovao Ferreira (Liam Neeson) who may have renounced Christ to save himself from martyrdom. When they arrive at their destination, they are introduced to a guide who can lead them to where converts are living in hiding. Kichijiro, their guide, is a very conflicted man, a convert who denied his faith by stepping on a fumi-e, a replica of Christ, to avoid a violent death. He is terrified of dying, but after each transgression and betrayal, he begs Father Rodrigues to hear his confession and grant him absolution, admitting that he is weak man. Both Rodrigues and Father Francisco Garrpe (Driver) are willing to die for their faith, but after seeing so much carnage at the hands of the Grand Inquisitor (Issey Ogata) who is willing to let Christians live if they renounce their belief, they wonder if they should break their silence and tell these gentle peasants to seek life, not a martyr’s death. Witnessing the
By Theda Kleinhans Reichman In April of 1974, as editor of the CBS in-house magazine “What’s Happening,” I had the pleasure of interviewing Mary Tyler Moore on the set of her signature TV series. In the show, she was Mary Richards, the associate producer of the 6 O’clock News at a Minneapolis TV station. James L.Brooks and Allan Burns, the creators and executive producers, came up with the concept for the series and in it women were treated as creative, interesting people and all the characters, whether male or female, were carefully delineated, not sit-come cartoons. In our interview, she told me she was born in Brooklyn, New York, but moved to California at the age of ten with her parents. She began her professional career as a dancer and in her first series, she was Richard Diamond’s secretary, Sam, with the sexy voice and beautiful legs, but her face was never shown. After many guest roles on TV, Carl Reiner cast Moore as Laura Petrie on “The Dick Van Dyke Show” where she received two Emmy Awards for the best comedy actress. She has also worked in motion pictures. At the time, we spoke she said her favorite was Ross Hunter’s musical
“Thoroughly Modern Mille.” Her co-star was Julie Andrews. When asked if she wanted to do dramatic roles she told me, “I know myself well enough to realize that comedy is what I do best. I’m not saying that if a terrific vehicle came along I wouldn’t be interested, but I am not going out of my way to look for it since I am satisfied with what I am doing now.” Later, she did take on a dramatic role in “Ordinary People,” directed by Robert Redford and was nominated for an Oscar proving, she could do it “after all.” Betty White, one of her dearest friends in real life, played the sexy Sue Ann Nivens on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Besides being gifted funny ladies, they shared a deep love for animals. “ I have always had a total emotional commitment to the prevention of cruelty to helpless animals, “ Mary told me. “ When I was only eight years old, I saw a man hit a dog with a stick. Well, I jumped the man, fighting and kicking. I guess I was totally committed even then.” She was also a quiet crusader for women in the industry, but she did it without any fanfare. One way was to have many women write for her show. “We’re not looking
for token women,” she said. “Their scripts have been used because they were good.” Additionally, Joyce Collins and her trio provided the music for The Mary Tyler Moore show. Not only did she make us laugh; she also was an inspiration to women aspiring to as well “make it on their own.”
constant brutality is breaking Father Rodrigues’ heart, and he cries out in anguish for an answer from God—but there is a silence he cannot comprehend. Does the silence signify that Christ does not exist? Or does it mean he must decide what is best for these devout Christians willing to die for their new-found religion. To limit costs, “Silence” was filmed in Taiwan, not Japan. The cinematography garnered an Oscar nomination for the film. “Silence,” is rated R for some disturbing violent content. Running time: 2 hours and 41 minutes.
••••••••••••••
On Tuesday, January 24, the Oscar nominations were announced, and to my utter amazement, Scorsese’s brilliant film “Silence” was not nominated. Nine films were chosen, but there is room for ten contenders. The only Oscar recognition the film received was for cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto. The nine nominated films, in alphabetical order are: “Arrival”, “Fences”, “Hacksaw Ridge”, “Hell or High Water”, “Hidden Figures”, “La La Land”, “Lion”, “Manchester by the Sea” and “Moonlight.”
Mary Tyler Moore Remembered: She Had Spunk

Countless women journalists from Oprah Winfrey and Katie Couric to Leslie Stahl on “60 Minutes” have spoken about her influence on their personal personal lives and careers. Mary Tyler Moore really did “turn the world on with her smile” and made the world a better place. She will be missed.

Trump to order Mexican border wall, ban refugees from 7 Muslim countries
the Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday. There are allegedly plans to hire 5,000 more US border agents and a call for local law enforcement to work with federal immigration authorities, two unnamed congressional aides told Reuters. Trump is also likely to cut the refugee cap in half for fiscal year 2017, down to 50,000, they added. The Obama administration said in August that it met its goal of admitting 10,000 Syrian refugees in the 2016 fiscal year, and was looking to increase the target by a few thousand in 2017. “While refugee admissions are only a small part of our broader humanitarian efforts Children play at a newly built section of the U.S.-Mexico border wall at Sunland Park, U.S. opposite in Syria and the region, the president understood the the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico © Jose Luis Gonzalez / Reuters important message this decision would send, not visas from being issued to would be exactly within his legal By Desert Star Staff just to the Syrian people but individuals from Syria, Iraq, Iran, rights,” Legomsky told Reuters. decision to increase the number of Syrian refugees admitted to the country amid concerns over potential terrorist attacks. ‘Pay for the Wall’ promise To restrict illegal immigration, Trump also famously promised to build a wall along the southern border with Mexico, and that Mexico would pay for it, provoking a war of words on the campaign trail. Trump said construction of the wall would first be paid for with a bill approved by Congress, and Mexico will later reimburse Washington. “Any money spent on building the Great Wall (for sake of speed), will be paid back by Mexico later!” he wrote on Twitter earlier this month. Trump is due to meet Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto at the White House next week. A number of Republican lawmakers believe that Trump has authority under the Secure Fence Act of 2006 to commence construction on the wall. The law, backed by then-President George W. Bush, mandated 700 miles of “reinforced fencing” on the US-Mexico border along with enhanced surveillance systems, which came to be known as a “virtual fence.” The full complement of barriers was never completed, and GOP lawmakers believe that the law provides sufficient authority to complete a full border wall.

Rancho Mirage Writers Festival Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Fourth Annual Rancho Mirage Writers Festival was held on Jan. 28th and 29th at the Rancho Mirage Public Library. Founder Jamie Kable brought 70 writers to be speakers at the event. The subjects of the books and the writers were varied so book lovers could pick a special speaker or workshop to go to. The writers are all famous for their stories, and the speeches were interesting. Some were political, some more like biographies and some just plain fiction. Most of the talks were almost an hour long. A few were solo speakers while others were panels with a moderator. Susan Ford Bales, Clifton Truman Daniel, Susan Eisenhower and Theodore Roosevelt IV spoke about growing up with a famous name and the privileges and responsibility that came with the name. They spoke about their childhood and what it was like to be part of such a political or military family. Thomas Lauderdale told about his band, Pink Martini, and he was introduced by Lucie

today’s world and the futures were just a few of the many topics talked about. There were five rooms in the library dedicated to the speeches, and almost every room was filled for each of the speakers. Actor Robert Wagner and his Step-daughter, Natasha Gregson Wagner spoke about
Natalie Wood and her legendary life. Their event was moderated by local Bruce Fessier. They signed their new coffee-table book, Natalie Wood: Reflections on a Legendary Life. Many of the authors held book signings after their speeches. One of my favorite speakers was Travis Mills, a US Army Staff
Sergeant, who is a quadruple amputee from injuries suffered in Iraq. His spirit despite his injuries is amazing. His motto is, Never Give up and Never Quit. His book is, Tough As They Come. He is a true inspiration on how to live life to the fullest, regardless.

BIG GAME 2017 | HOW THEY GOT HERE

Atlanta Falcons iding an all-time great offense and a stingy young defense, the Atlanta Falcons are one win away from their first Super Bowl championship in team history.
Quarterback Matt Ryan and wide receiver Julio Jones have mystified opposing defenses all season long, positioning the Falcons as among the 10 best all-time in the National Football League. Atlanta soared to two home playoff victories — over the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers — to make it to the big game in Houston. For a team that not too many prognosticators tabbed as favorites to win their own division, the Falcons have given their fan base supreme confidence heading into their showdown with the New England Patriots.
INCREDIBLE OFFENSE Yes, Ryan and Jones combined to form a fearsome duo all season long. Ryan, in fact, is favored to win the league’s Most Valuable Player award. But the best-kept secret about the Falcons’ offense may be their running game. Atlanta’s Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman combined for 2,482 yards in the regular season with 24 touchdowns. This viable ground game kept defenses honest and opened up wide open passing lanes for Ryan. Jones finished the regular season with six touchdowns and more than 1,400 yards receiving, many of which came during a 300-yard performance against the Carolina Panthers early in the season.

YOUNG YET STURDY D Atlanta’s defense hasn’t demanded as many headlines as the offense throughout the season, but it has shaped into quite a challenge for opposing quarterbacks. Take the team’s National Football Conference title win over the Green Bay Packers. The Falcons cruised to a 44-21 victory thanks in large

part to the defense-shuddering quarterback Aaron Rodgers and his crew of wide receivers. Rodgers was sacked twice and threw an interception on a day where his receivers and running backs struggled to find any room to run. Second-year linebacker Vic Beasley and longtime veteran Dwight Freeney have helped turn the defense into a
strength this season in Atlanta.
CLOSING OUT THE GEORGIA DOME The Falcons turned out some sold-out crowds during their postseason run as fans celebrated the history of the Georgia Dome. The longtime home of the Falcons will be replaced next year by
Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The multi-purpose retractable roof stadium is currently under construction in Atlanta and will be ready for play ahead of the 2017 season. Estimated at $1.5 billion, the stadium will host Super Bowl LIII in 2019 and will replace the famed Georgia Dome, which has hosted Falcons games since 1992.

hile the Atlanta Falcons look to secure their first league championship in team history, the New England Patriots are trying to add one for the thumb.
The Pats are in their ninth Super Bowl, the most by any franchise. (Dallas, Denver and Pittsburgh have been to eight.) With the win, New England will earn its fifth title, which would tie Dallas and San Francisco for second all-time. The Steelers are first with six Super Bowl titles.
COACH AND QB POWERHOUSE Coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady have catalyzed all the Patriots’ Super Bowl wins. They won their first three in a four-year span (2002-05) but had to wait 10 years for

wide receiver and tight end position that has included consistent play from Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Malcolm Mitchell, Danny Amendola and Martellus Bennett. Running backs Dion Lewis and James White also have helped the Pats succeed offensively in lieu of Gronk.
The Patriots have been without tight end Rob Gronkowski for half the season. Generally losing a player of Gronk’s caliber leads to simplifying the playbook and offensive philosophies. Not in New England. Brady has benefited from a deep

England’s defense have anything to say about it, fans can look for solid play from the Patriots’ secondary. Butler saved Super Bowl XLIX for the Patriots with his goal-line interception against the Seahawks and will likely draw the tough assignment of covering Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones. This could give fans one of the best matchups to watch on Super Bowl Sunday. Butler is helped by solid defensive line and linebacker play, as well as an offense that can certainly play from behind should the Falcons jump out to an early lead.
