Sunnylands employee campus earns LEED Platinum rating for sustainable design. By Desert Star Staff RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – The Annenberg Foundation Trust is pleased to announce that its 17-acre employee campus, including administration, archives, and operations buildings, has been awarded LEED® Platinum certification, the U.S. Green

Business Council’s highest rating for sustainable design. LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a globally recognized standard of green building excellence. LEED projects earn certification points by adhering to requirements and credits

that promote healthier environments, the efficient use of electricity, and lower carbon emissions. “LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, the U.S. Green Business Council’s president and chief executive

officer. “LEED was created to make the world a better place and revolutionize our buildings and communities by providing everyone with access to healthy, green, and high-performing buildings.” The campus, completed in 2017, is the second newconstruction project at the

site of the former Annenberg estate in Rancho Mirage, Calif., to achieve a high standard of LEED certification. The Center & Gardens, the 17,000-square-foot visitor center and 9-acre desert garden that serves as the Continues on Page 5

Tail Wagging Fashions Put Pets on The Runway

Photos by Lauren Darr By Pamela Price Fashion-conscious owners of pets, from cats and dogs to rabbits and monkeys, share something in common: a passion for fashion. In Laurren Darr’s book, Pet Fashion Industry Patterns, it all comes together in a fascinating review of the burgeoning market in pet finery. The author says, “I want to show how close the bonds can be with our pets through fashion.” Her expertise is invaluable from the moment

she reveals impressive statistics on the future of pet fashions. Proving her point, for example, in 2015, the pet industry surpassed the $60 billion mark in the United States, according to the American Pet Products Association. Today canines and felines alike take to the ‘runway shows’ with aplomb, revealing fashions from iconic fashion industry personalities. Pet inspired fashion events will become as glamorized as

the fashion weeks you see in cities such as the ones staged in Paris and New York, with wardrobe assists from the ever-savvy behind the scenes “pet fashion stylist.” Adding to pet grooming dynamics is a new wave of earth-friendly pet maintenance products such as Begley’s Natural Waterless Pet Shampoo, in snazzy scents such as ‘oatmeal mango’ and a companion product, also Earth Responsible, a Natural Pet Stain & Odor remover. Pet

models are becoming crowdpleasers, as can be seen at petfashionprofessionals. com/ap. Check out LeftPawPress. com for current information on pet fashions. Shifting to feline fashions, Lauren Darr reports that “cats outnumber dogs in the household pet category,” adding that the American Pet Products Association reports. In contrast, dog ownership hovers around 83.3 million, cats are in the

lead, with the ownership estimated at 95.6 million, and that number is rising. Designers are reaching out to the cat community, including stylish feline items from collars and clothing to harnesses. From a philanthropic perspective, “it looks likes dogs, and cats might even share the runway in the future,” comments Grace Robbins, author and owner of Luke, her furry friend of eight years.

5 Ways to Help Prevent the Spread of Illness

Keep your family safe and slow the spread of germs FAMILY FEATURES

T

his year, as cold and flu season converges with the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to take precautions to help prevent the spread of illness and infection both in and out of the home. The similarities between cold, flu and COVID-19 symptoms can be confusing, and a spike in the seasonal flu could place additional strain on already tight health care resources. To help ease confusion and provide guidance, Dr. Darria Long-Gillespie, ER physician and Clorox spokesperson, outlined these best practices that can help keep you and your family healthy. Develop a Household Plan: Make sure everyone in your household and immediate family is on the same page about how to best prevent the spread of illness within your home. Consider an informal “household contract,” where each member will alert the household if he or she comes in contact with an infected person or starts showing symptoms. This is important to help protect everyone in the house as well as visitors to your home, particularly those who are at-risk (such as older relatives) and can allow you time to prepare should any family member need to self-quarantine. Don’t Skip the Flu Shot: Your first line of protection against illness is a flu shot, which not only reduces your risk of getting the flu, but also helps protect your community and conserve health care resources. This is especially important this year, since some of the symptoms of COVID-19 and the flu overlap and can be difficult to tell apart. Because accessing the flu vaccine may be more challenging this year for many Americans due to the pandemic, Clorox has donated $1 million to Direct Relief, Visiting Nurses Association of America and Families Fighting Flu to help provide access to, and spread awareness of, the importance of flu vaccinations. Maintain Regular Healthy Habits: One of the best defenses is a good offense, and the same is true when preparing for cold and flu season. Aiming for a well-balanced diet full of non-processed foods, staying hydrated, exercising and keeping a regular sleep schedule are all keys to keeping illness at bay. Disinfecting high-touch surfaces with a disinfectant that’s approved by the Environmental Protection Agency to kill SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can also help support prevention, especially if you have members of the household leaving frequently for work or school. Attend Necessary Medical Appointments: It’s important for you and your family to attend annual physical exams and other necessary medical appointments – whether it’s virtually or while following appropriate safety precautions in person. These checkups are crucial for keeping up to date on your prescriptions and general well-being, identifying any potential medical issues and monitoring recurring issues. Contact your doctor’s office to see if it is open for in-person or telehealth appointments in order to make the best decision for receiving care for you and your family. Create Prevention Packs: Keep illness prevention items, such as face masks, hand sanitizer, disposable gloves and disinfecting wipes, in one centralized spot at home. Also keep additional kits in easy-to-reach areas like the center console of your vehicle or inside your purse or backpack for when you’re on the go. Do You Have a Will? & Keep it Updated?

By Janice Gough It’s shocking how outdated wills can be. Very often people put together a [short] “sweetheart will” when they first get married that usually says, “If I die and my spouse survives me, [they’ll] get everything outright.” Then they have kids, 20 years go by, and they have accumulated millions of dollars of wealth. But they haven’t made any changes to that original will. Now they’re worth $10 million and have grown kids and grandkids. Thus, the will is completely inappropriate, including the tax considerations. Most people know, that

if you die in California without a will or trust, you die intestate, which means succession of your estate will be in line with the state rules and would have to go thru Probate Your net worth would go to your spouse first, if your spouse pre-deceased you, it would go to your children equally. Since most people do not want to face their own mortality, it is not hard to understand why most people do not create a will. Wills have rules. Generally, the only person you cannot completely disinherit is your spouse. The predators reaching for an inheritance are a potentially divorcing spouse or a disinherited child, who could, essentially shake down a parent’s estate. This is what happens if the deceased leaves no will or trust. In many states, half the inheritance goes to the kids and half to the spouse. A courtappointed guardian receives the children’s half, which, generally cannot be used for their support. So it’s a complete disaster for the spouse who isn’t working. They get only half the estate and have to use it all to pay for the kids’ support. Most people do not

want to think about the nitty-gritty of their potential wills and are quick to make erroneous assumptions about what’s going to happen to the assets they leave and the rights of beneficiaries. To keep your will current, one painless approach is to update your will every couple of years. The revision could be as minor as changing a comma to a semicolon, but this shows that you kept your decisions current. A will can list all your personal property in a yearly log and can be changed. It

would list your assets, who you wish to gift those assets to. To authenticate it 1. date each entry and sign the log of each listed asset. Once you wish these items to be a part of the Trust, You may have your trust attorney add them. It is cheaper for legal services to add a page at a time vs. separate entry. If you do not own property that requires title transfer, then a will could be appropriate and less costly. Owning property requires a trust to keep the dissolution of the property from having

Can We Attend? Can We Vote?

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Kelly: I am on the Architectural Review Committee for our association. Recently homeowners have asked to attend the meetings. What are the guidelines for homeowner attendance at these meetings? We have said they can sit and observe without comment. Some homeowners have attended strictly to attack the members for what they perceive as a slight to their plan approval process. Should we allow attendance? A.C., Westlake Village Dear A.C.: HOA committees do not fall under the Open Meeting Act unless a quorum of the board attends the meeting – then the committee meeting meets the definition of “board meeting” under Civil Code Section 4090. Otherwise, committee meetings are not required to be open to observation. If members are attending just to attack other homeowner proposals, then perhaps the attendance policy should be reviewed. Also, committees are not bound by the Open Meeting Act requirement of an agenda posted 4 days before the meeting. Best regards, Kelly

Kelly: Many homeowners are upset that the HOA board is voting in rules and regulations without notifying the homeowners and having them vote. At a recent meeting about 10-12 homeowners attended to report such circumnavigation around policy. In fact, no minutes have been recorded for many years. What can we do? Thanks again. B.J., Huntington Beach Dear B.J.: Rules are adopted or changed by the board of directors under Civil Code Sections 4340 and 4350. However, boards are required by Civil Code Section 4360(a) to announce proposed changes, including the specific new wording proposed, at least 28 days before considering the change. Then, the board makes the decision at the meeting, “after consideration of any comments made by association members.” (Civil Code Section 4360(b)). Each rule change involves at least two board meetings and so two board minutes. During the first meeting, the board approves the announcement of the proposed change, and in the second meeting the board adopts the rule change. Before adopting rule changes boards should listen to any attendees’ comments, as rules that are completely out of step with the membership could result in a petition for a February 3, 2021

membership vote to overturn the rule change under Civil Code Section 4365. Thanks for your question, Kelly Dear Mr. Richardson: It has always been my impression that owners can address any topic of matter affecting the owners, and even bring motions regarding such matters. What I am contemplating is a motion to bring an issue to the vote of the Association at the next annual association meeting, but not for any immediate vote in the annual meeting. I would appreciate your take on this. Sincerely, B.M., Irvine Dear B.M.: Pursuant to Civil Code Section 4925(b), part of the Open Meeting Act, open board meetings and membership meetings must give an opportunity for members to speak on any topic. However, the audience

to go thru probate Court, which can be quite expensive and can take a lot to time. Please follow my column next week in which I explore the challenges of Wills and how to avoid them. may not make motions at board meetings, because the board is the deliberating and voting body in that meeting. Members may make motions at membership meetings, but they need to be motions on which either the law or governing documents give the members and not the board the decision-making authority. Also, notice of many membership decisions or voting must be given at least 10 or 30 days in advance, depending on the subject. Best, Kelly Kelly G. HOROSCOPES ARIES

You know health is more important than anything. With Mercury retro your health must be your intelligent focus. Tend and care for all aspects of your body - from teeth to eyes to digestion. Stretch, do yoga and walk while considering the plans for your foods, green drinks, pure water, vitamins, minerals and homeopathy. Think daily rhythmic health regime. This mindful lifestyle allows you to feel more safe, efficient, effective and successful. A certain happiness and joy then permeates your life.

TAURUS You retreat inward to a place where imagination becomes creative and creativity becomes real. This becomes fun for you, a newly revealed creativity. And you do always want to have fun. Quiet investigations turn into new art forms, combining art with music. In the outer world responsibilities take more time (especially with groups, children, elders or animals who might be irritated). As it takes more time to complete tasks, you may feel at times your creativity is lost forever. It’s not.

GEMINI We had a talk last week. Here’s an overview. You’re at a fork in the road. There’s nowhere to go (not yet). You seek likeminded others. The times now demand, for you and humanity, that choices be made that determine the future. Each will be given time to decide, then a

“call” is sounded forth. You remain where you are now, feeling safe in past patterns. However, Aquarius dissolves the past, creates a tension within concerning coming changes. It arrives right on time. The Two of Wands (tarot) just showed up for you.

CANCER Your past is in the present and it’s shaking up what you thought was your reality. Always seeking to know the truth, you said recently that you found your path. You remain hiding away at home often feeling there’s not enough time, energy or money. This will change as life changes later in the year. The fear you feel, the needs of the family, your sense of responsibility make you feel overloaded. You may think of moving. But where? Begin your spring garden. One task at a time, efficiently.

LEO Ponder upon finances and the economy. And what your values are. Pallas Athena, the asteroid of brilliance, daughter of benevolent Jupiter is presently influencing your state of resources. Do you sense your values are different than others’? Do you feel a lack of some type of resource? Perhaps it’s your confidence and selfesteem. Do you feel you have enough to thrive? Build new resources up slowly. Ask where you deny yourself. Ask what calls deeply to you. What do you presently love?

VIRGO

Conserving your daily life energy is most important. Do not push yourself out into the world of communication or misunderstandings could occur. Should you feel inactive with no initiative, know that this is exactly how you should feel. Slow down, tend to how you eat, exercise, garden, pets, etc. Redo your image and how you dress. Adapt to things and new ways of being slowly and reflectively. Gaze into a deep pool of water. Grow roses, hollyhocks and narcissus.

LIBRA How is your sleep? Overmuch or too little? Dreams that direct, awaken, scare or overwhelm? Do you sense that you can no longer live with excuses about certain separations in your life? Their energy has run out? Write down visions, hopes wishes and dreams, things visualized and imagined. Encourage yourself, protect yourself and make yourself happy by being with just the right people. Seek places where forgiveness must be given. Forgiveness heals everything.

SCORPIO Unconscious thoughts and visions from the past appear as well as friends and loved ones and a few strangers from the past show up. They are unexpected, at times not quite welcome. Be graceful and kind anyway. At times you feel ingenious, at other times, strategic. We will all need to be strategic soon in terms of the coming times. Allow no struggle in relationship. Tell Mars you

want its more passionate, less warring side. Many small acts of goodness change the world. Have intentions for Goodwill in all endeavors.

SAGITTARIUS Avoid all types of conflict, even the ones you’re only thinking about. This will safeguard your future. Thoughts are “things”. They have energy behind them, and sometimes “projectiles”. Whatever you think, it’s an emanation of energy from you and it always finds its target. If your thoughts are of Goodwill towards others, the hearts and minds of everyone are uplifted. You don’t want to go to war with anyone in your profession. You want more than survival and conquest. You want harmony, lightness, the outcome of all relationships like the Balm of Gilead.

CAPRICORN It is a time for reviewing all goals, for assessing their reality without compromise and figuring out the details to be worked out. What are the benefits of each goal and how will they direct your life towards happiness in the future? It is good to consider a garden of medicinal herbs this year, growing them in greenhouses, protecting them from the results of chemtrails in our water, foods, milk, soil and air. This may be your most important task and you will find the best way to create it. Think creatively. Think fragrance, color, wood and glass.

AQUARIUS You have relied on yourself most of your life; relying on your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing, creativity and resources. Either open a little store or begin to give away and/or recycle everything in order to reconstruct a clearer picture of where you think you’re going, where you want to go and why. You will express your deepest hopes and dreams, wearing your heart on your sleeve as well as rekindle relationships that sustain, encourage, and care for you. You will return that care in kind. Your tarot card is the Two of Cups.

PISCES Have as a three-month intention to work with the Will to Good and with harmony as struggles, confrontations and frustrations appear in the small details of daily life. Also, in relationships. Do not think in cross-purposes but respect what others are saying and doing. Look at everyone as an angel in disguise, visiting you for a while, with a lesson in hand. Be generous with your time, showing gratitude and appreciation. Always be of good cheer. Make that a choice. Then each moment you will succeed. And your healing proceeds and accelerates. Significant Property Tax Law Change to Come Later this Month By Desert Star Staff Sacramento – On November 3, 2020, California voters approved Proposition 19, The Home Protection for Seniors, Severely Disabled, Families, and Victims of Wildfire or Natural Disasters Act. Beginning on February 16, 2021, there will be significant property tax law changes, specifically for families transferring real property between parents and children, or between grandparents and grandchildren if the parents are deceased. “We are about two weeks away before the new law goes into effect,” said California State Board of Equalization (BOE) Chairman

Antonio Vazquez. “Families who planned to leave property to their children should immediately evaluate their options and make a decision that’s best for their own circumstances.” Once operative, Proposition 19 only allows for a parent’s primary residence to be transferred without a property tax increase if their child keeps the home as their primary residence. In addition, Proposition 19 caps the transferable amount equal to the home’s taxable value at the time of transfer plus $1 million. The $1 million allowance will be adjusted annually beginning in 2023. “My Little Sister” – Switzerland’s Entry For Best International Feature Film

Nina Hoss (Lisa) and Lars Eidinger (Sven) as her twin in Stéphanie Chuat and Véronique Reymond’s, My Little Sister, now playing in virtual theatres. Photo: Courtesy of Schwesterlein The two lead characters in writer-directors Stéphanie Chuat and Véronique Reymond’s, My Little Sister, are fraternal twins, superbly performed by Nina Hoss as Lisa and Lars Eidinger as her brother Sven. It’s common knowledge that the bond between twins is stronger than that of regular siblings. One of the inherent mysteries is, even as adults, their hearts beat almost as one. This is a story about the unbridled love and devotion between two such siblings. Once a successful playwright, Lisa has abandoned her career in Berlin and lives in Lausanne, Switzerland, with her husband and two children. Her husband, Martin, well played by Jens Albinus, is head of a music conservatory where Lisa teaches. He’s happy with his life as the income affords the family a good living standard, which he cannot duplicate in Germany, their homeland. She wants to return to Berlin, but because of her husband’s work, she’s stuck. I don’t usually mention the soundtrack so early in a review, but Christian Garcia’s brilliant music, comprised of 39 compositions ranging from disco to opera, beautifully underscores the narrative. Cinematographer Filip Zumbrunn’s camera slowly leads us to the opening opera music source, which is Sven sitting on his hospital bed wearing headphones. He is a successful actor with the famous Schaubühne Theatre in Berlin and had been in rehearsals for Hamlet’s lead role, directed by his long-time collaborator Lukas, sympathetically played by Moritz Gottwald. The treatment for Sven’s progressive disease has knocked the wind out of his sails, but he still wants to do the role. However, he can barely get through the rehearsal. Despite Lisa’s eventual pleading to let him play the lead, the director cancels the play citing that one else in the company

can play that iconic part. Earlier, Lisa had stopped by Sven’s apartment to pack up what he needs to stay in Berlin with their mother, Kathy, well-characterized by Marthe Keller. Mom’s apartment is in total disarray, and she has trouble focusing. After Lisa gives her a list of his meds and appointments, it becomes clear that she is can barely take care of herself, let alone her sick son. Lisa decides to take Sven to Switzerland, where she will look after him with the help of her two children Linnie-Lou (Linne-Lu Lungerhausen) and Noah (Noah Tscharland), as well as her husband. But there is an underlying tension between Lisa and Martin as she suspects him of being unfaithful. At the conservatory, there is a reception for parents, and one of the students masterfully plays Mozart’s Clair de Lune. During the following cocktail reception, Lisa learns that the board wants to renew her husband’s contract for another five years, but she is adamant. She wants to return to Berlin, where she feels she could start writing again. In between taking care of the family, Lisa spends all of her free time looking after Sven, whose condition is deteriorating. Despite that, she is determined to keep him alive. She supervises his meals, helps him change his clothes, bathes him, and tries to keep his spirits up by taking him sledding in the picturesque Swiss Alps. Knowing that he can’t do Hamlet, Sven’s behavior becomes reckless. He goes to a rave and tries having sex in the bathroom, but the drug cocktail has rendered him impotent. He dances to wild, pulsating music as though his life depends on it. Following that physically exhausting evening, he suffers a humongous hangover resulting in bathroom trips. In the meantime, Martin is trying to rebuild his strained relationship.

Sven, (Lars Eidinger), a famous German actor, was in rehearsals at Berlin’s Schaubühne Theatre for Hamlet’s lead role. Photo: Courtesy of Schwesterlein©JonasFriedrich

He offers to take his wife on holiday to Rome, but she won’t leave her brother. One of Martin’s interests is hang gliding. One day, as he was about to take off, Sven shows up, insisting he wanted to try that as well. Over his brother-in-law’s objections, Sven suits up and becomes airborne, the outcome of which is severe and doesn’t end well. Aware that Sven would be better off in Berlin, she quietly packs up the kids and Sven, and they head back to their mother’s home. To cheer him up, Lisa tells Sven she will write a play just for him and that it will be loosely based on Hansel & Gretel. Mainly inspired by her brother, Lisa has actually started writing again. They discuss scenes together, and he enjoys closing his eyes and listening to her type. When she completes

a number of pages, Lisa goes back to the Schaubühne Theatre to beg them to mount the play for her brother, but the season is set, and no changes are possible. Despite his suffering, Sven retains a healthy sense of humor, which mitigates the pain he must endure. As you’re reading this review, you might think this is a depressing film. Although it deals with life and death matters, what is really the takeaway is the love and devotion of one family member to the other. Couple that with the astounding performances given by Hoss and Eidinger, makes this film worthy of your attention. It’s a tribute to the power of love and devotion between two siblings who actually heal each other to some degree. Cheat, and Reymond paced the film

with thoughtful, penetrating, sensitive direction allowing the characters to develop the multi-levels of their complex psyches, all of which have been unobtrusively captured by Zumbrunn’s delicate camera work. There is a reason why My Little Sister was nominated for the Golden Bear and Teddy Awards at the 2020 Berlinale. When you watch the film, the reason will become crystal clear. Take Advantage of Telemedicine for Better Health

I

FAMILY FEATURES

f there is a silver lining to the challenges the past year created for families, it may be the growth, availability and affordability of virtual care for medical and mental health needs. The ability to see a doctor from home, with little notice, offers a level of flexibility in accessing health care that was historically quite rare. Virtual care, or telemedicine, can span a wide range of services to address a family’s health needs without going to a doctor’s office and provides easy access to experts and specialists via phone and video. Plus, telemedicine services are covered by most insurance providers. “Telemedicine is a safe and practical way to access health care for the entire family,” said Dr. Desreen N. Dudley, a clinical psychologist and behavioral health quality consultant for Teladoc. “For example, Teladoc has thousands of care providers across all 50 states that let members quickly connect with a doctor or specialist who can provide peace of mind any hour of the day or night.” From care for specific illnesses to managing ongoing concerns, learn how accessing telemedicine might be a good fit for your family’s health care needs.

Everyday Illnesses

In the past, if your doctor’s office couldn’t get you in to help treat conditions like allergies, sinus infections or other common illnesses, urgent care was one of your few remaining options. Now, virtual care can be increasingly relied upon to conveniently address nonemergency needs and everyday illnesses in place of urgent care.

Specialty Care

Even with a referral, it can take weeks or months to get an appointment with some specialists. One example is dermatology. Instead of waiting months to be seen by a dermatologist, with a virtual provider, you can seek and receive treatment a matter of hours.

Mental Health

As a result of the pandemic and related social implications, many organizations are reporting substantial upticks in requests for mental health support and anticipate telemedicine will outlive the pandemic. In fact, phone and video visits for mental health have been shown to be as effective as in-person treatment, according to the Telemental Health Institute.

Wellness Care

Most people think of their health needs in terms of reactive care for known problems, but it can also be useful for wellness care, such as nutrition. With more families cooking meals at home during the pandemic, registered dietitians can provide virtual consultations to help ensure everyone, including family members with special dietary needs, receives proper nutrients.

Expert Advice

If you’re unsure about a diagnosis, need help choosing treatment, have medical questions or concerns, or want an expert’s advice or second opinion, some virtual care providers can connect you with leading specialists to give you the answers and confidence you need to make informed decisions about your family’s health.

Take Charge of Your Mental Health Between virtual school, safe playdates and working from home, lives have been interrupted in countless ways by the COVID-19 pandemic. Among those is the impact on mental health. These tips from Dudley can help make your mental health a priority. Engage in self-care. Self-care should be prioritized along with your work or family priorities. Make time to reconnect with family and friends by phone or video chat and allow kids to do the same. Remember asking for help, including seeking mental health counseling, is a form of self-care, too. Change expectations. Give yourself and your family grace, embrace flexibility and let go of your pursuit of perfection. Be patient and give yourself a “timeout” when challenges arise. For example, wait to address kids’ negative behaviors until you are less frustrated and stop apologizing for things like children making noise in the background of calls. Keep a structured routine. Even if your regular schedule is off due to virtual school or other factors, maintaining routines like regular bedtimes allows for more time to get things done and unwind. Similarly, focus on your responsibilities during the day then catch up with kids and nonessential activities after work hours.

FTC Gives Final Approval to Zoom By Desert Star Staff The Federal Trade Commission finalized a settlement with Zoom Video Communications, Inc., over allegations it misled consumers about the level of security it provided for its Zoom meetings and compromised the security of some Mac users.
