“Super ‘Money’ Bowl 22” Critics have warned that supporters are being priced out By Desert Star Staff According to accounts of the ticket costs for the showdown between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals, fans who want to attend the NFL championship game Super

Bowl LVI will need hefty expendable income, or luck have led to controversy over sky-high looking prices. Some well-known ticket exchanges are charging an average of more than $10,000 to attend one of

the most anticipated Super Bowl matches in history, featuring the Rams at their home stadium, which can hold more than 70,000 people on the day against a team that has never won the title. That has resulted in

accusations that supporters are being priced out of what many consider the flagship event on the sporting calendar in the US, with analysis showing that the most expensive tickets are going for an average price of more than $104,000. Even wealthy fans might balk at paying the mere

relative snip of around $6,000 reportedly being charged for the cheapest tickets, so it may not be a surprise if the TV audience for the game beats the total of more than 96 million in the US who watched the 2021 edition when the Continues on Page 6

Residents, Visitors Warn of Rental Home Scams Ahead of Coachella

By Kamari Esquerra PSNBC “I can’t let this happen to other concertgoers or tenants or homeowners,” said Malia Rivera, an Indio homeowner and landlord. “This is horrible.” Julissa Polido has been a faithful Coachella attendee for years, and she is looking forward to returning this year. While searching for a more affordable rental option for the weekend festival, she came across an eye-catching listing posted on Craigslist. “It looked like a great deal, and I was like, ‘Wow, are these people just really wanting to discount their house for whatever reason this year?” said Julissa Polido, a Reno resident.

Polido said she had a conversation via email with William E. Coon – who the listing was under – about check-in days and times, amenities, and said Coon even sent her an invoice. “Even from the first email, it seemed a little fishy, and as it continued on, it seemed a little more, so I decided to research more about the location,” said Polido. She typed in the listing address on Google and found the homeowner and her contact information. “I received a phone call yesterday from a woman in Nevada who asked if my

Groups Vow to Fight on as Single-Payer Health-Care Bill Dies

By Suzanne Potter/PNS Advocates for a singlepayer, government-funded healthcare system in California are vowing to fight another day after Assembly Bill 1400 was pulled Monday for lack of votes. The bill would have allowed people to ditch their private insurance, something opponents say amounts to a government takeover that would require significant tax increases. However, Assemblymember Ash Kalra, D-San Jose, the bill’s principal author, said the high costs in the existing private-insurance system put coverage out of reach for many low-income families. “Currently, California families and businesses spend over $220 billion a year out of their pocket for health care,” he said, “and so even the taxation mechanisms that

were introduced, the reality is that costs would go down for the average Californian family and business.” The bill aimed to create a “Medicare-for-all” type system to guarantee affordable health care to all Californians and leverage the state to negotiate lower rates from providers. To pay for it, the bill would have raised taxes on highearning businesses and large employers, plus a payroll tax on those making around $50,000 and progressive income taxes on people making more than $149,500 a year. Catherine Kennedy, a president of the California Nurses Association and a neonatal intensivecare unit nurse at Kaiser “We don’t give up,” she Roseville, said Americans said. “This is really about health of all income levels deserve care being a human right. It’s comprehensive health care. a groundswell, and we are

going to make this happen.” Advocacy groups have said they will keep building support for a single-payer

system and try again once a new Legislature is seated after the November election.

Millions of 3G Devices to Lose Service in Next Few Months

By Suzanne Potter/PNS Most devices that run on 3G wireless technology will

become obsolete this year, some as soon as three weeks. To clear bandwidth for

the new high-speed, fifthgeneration networks known as 5G, companies will shut

off service to devices that use 3G. That includes oldermodel flip phones, fire alarms, burglar alarms, personal emergency response necklaces or bracelets, and onboard navigation systems in older cars. “What we’re recommending is that a person sits down and go through everything in their home and their car that might be connected to a wireless connection,” said Tom Kamber, executive director of Older Adults Technology Services from AARP. “Write down what the model number is and call the provider who’s giving you service for the device.” AT&T will shut down its 3G network on February 22. T-Mobile shuts down its old Sprint network on March 31 and its own 3G offerings at the end of July. Verizon has

said it will retire its 3G service at the end of this year. Kamber said you might have to replace your device, but you don’t have to go with an expensive, top-ofthe-line 5G product if you only need a basic model. “Begin by saying, ‘What is the most compatible new device that would be at the same level of cost as my old device, and can I do this cost-free?’ And many companies are trying to offer it for free right now,” he said. The website Senior Planet from AARP will host a free online workshop Thursday to help people navigate the transition from 3G to 5G. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Featured on A&E’s ‘Shipping Wars’

By Desert Star Staff Yogi Bear came out of hibernation early this year to appear on A&E’s ‘Shipping Wars.’ The show follows a diverse group of transporters who lay it all on the line to haul anything and everything. The episode took viewers on the road as transporter Doug Smith delivered a 10-foot Yogi Bear statue to a Jellystone Park Camp-Resort in Asheboro, North Carolina, and a massive Yogi Bear-themed concession stands to a Jellystone Park location in Tabor City, North Carolina. Viewers can watch the episode On Demand, on the A&E app or at AETV.com. The journey began in Cincinnati, Ohio, where the statue and concession stand

was built. The two items were carefully loaded – in pieces – during a downpour. Time was tight! The statue needed to be in Asheboro the following day, with the refreshment stand due later that afternoon in Tabor City. Once there, the concession stand would need to be reassembled in time for a big reveal party the next day. As is often the case with difficult shipments, there were unexpected problems and delays. However, Doug safely delivered both items to their destinations. Unloading the refreshment stand proved exceptionally challenging, requiring two forklifts with operators delicately offloading it and gently

placing it in its new home. The assembly team worked into the night to get the stand ready for the party, finishing it just in time. Families visiting the park were the first to be served pizza and s’mores from the newly branded stand with Yogi Bear, Boo Boo, and Cindy Bear joining the fun. “Jellystone Park CampResorts are truly unique places, which is why kids and parents love them so much,” said Trent Hershenson, vice president of Marketing. “The ‘Shipping Wars’ episode gives our fans and viewers a behind-the-scenes glimpse of how the fun is made.” Visit www.jellystonepark. com to book a vacation at the Asheboro, Tabor City or any other Jellystone Park location. How will low U.S. unemployment rates affect the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision? “The U.S. unemployment rate is now at 3.9 percent, which is very close to the pre-pandemic normal of 3.5 percent. These numbers give the Federal Reserve room to start withdrawing the economic support that was put in place at the start of Covid-19’s onslaught,” said Jill Gonzalez, WalletHub Analyst. “Understandably, the Federal Reserve wants to begin raising interest rates this year to try to combat high inflation, and the current unemployment rate might make that possible. It makes sense for interest rates to get back to prepandemic normalcy, too.” Will the omicron variant continue to hold back hiring in the U.S.? “The omicron variant could delay unemployment decreases in the short term,” said WalletHub analyst, Jill Gonzalez. “However, 2022 will most likely be another year of job gains that might even

surpass the pre-pandemic levels. The good news is that the omicron variant seems to be much less severe than the previous strains and should peak soon. If that’s the case, unemployment rates should start to drop even more in the coming months.” How do red states and blue states compare when it comes to recovery?

“With an average rank of 24 among the most recovered states, blue states had a better recovery from unemployment claims last week than red states, which rank 28 on average,” said Jill Gonzalez, WalletHub analyst. “The lower the number of the ranking, the bigger the state’s recovery was.” How has unemployment

in California recovered? “California’s unemployment claims have experienced the 5th slowest recovery in the U.S. For the week of January 24, California had 55,288 new unemployment claims, a 95% decrease from the peak during the coronavirus pandemic,” said Jill Gonzalez, WalletHub analyst.

home was still available as it was listed on Craigslist for $250 a day for the Coachella music festival,” said Rivera. “She called me and said, ‘Hey, is your home still available?’ and I said our home is already rented through May and is going for over $10,000 for that month alone, and we do not rent it on a short-term basis.” Rivera was shocked to find her home on the advertising website and even reached out to the scammer herself pretending to be interested in her home. “(Polido), and I said this is a scam. We have to flag it on Craigslist. It took a day to do that,” said Rivera. “I apologized to her and told her that we have to let other concertgoers know that this could happen. This could even happen to homeowners.” Ahead of the biggest music festival globally, Polido and Rivera are warning renters and landlords to beware of rental scams. “It’s pretty scary how somebody looking for a low-cost hotel or home for Coachella could fall for this,” said Rivera. When booking a rental, do your research and ensure that the property you are interested in is listed with a credible source or property management. A red flag to look out for is people requesting large sums of money or

wire transfers upfront. If you have difficulty contacting the person listing the property or sending vague

messages, this could also be a sign that it’s a scam. Finally, keep in mind the age-old wisdom of…

“If it’s too good to be true, it probably isn’t true,” said Polido. Source: NBC Palm Springs

Rolling Stone called the track “catchy and danceable,” saying, “you can imagine teenagers screaming it from car windows on the last day of classes.” Vulturecalled the single “playful, empowering, and catchy to boot,” and SPIN hailed the album as “a full collection of coming of age, punk rock classics.” The video, entirely shot on iPhone 13 Pro Max, features custom clothing from Rodarte & Batsheva, and eyewear from Warby Parker. Parents’ Advocates Cheer CA Deal on COVID Paid Sick Leave

By Suzanne Potter/PNS Parents’ rights groups are praising a plan to extend paid sick leave for many California workers, which is now on a fast track to pass. Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a deal with legislative leaders Tuesday on a bill to require businesses with 26 employees or more to offer two weeks of paid sick leave to recover from COVID or care for a sick family member. Matthew Kijak, director

of programs at the nonprofit Raising the Future, part of Parents Anonymous, which runs the California Parent Youth Helpline, said people should not lose their pay if they or their kids test positive. “So it’s important that we respect the role that parents play who is basically this entire pandemic,” Kijak asserted. “And honor that by allowing them to stay home to take care of their children who may be suffering from coronavirus.”

A similar extension of sick leave during COVID expired last September. The proposal would be retroactive to cover sick days taken since Jan. 1 and would come to an end on Sep. 30. Full-time workers will qualify for 40 hours of leave, plus another 40 if they show a positive COVID test. Parttimers would get the number of hours off they usually work. Opponents complain that businesses will bear extended sick leave entirely, many of

which are still struggling after the pandemic shutdowns. To help soften the blow on companies, the deal would restore some tax deductions and expand some tax credits. Kijak argued workers’ health must be the priority. “Business is important,” Kijak acknowledged. “But compared to having employees come to work with coronavirus, and, God forbid, die, it’s not a comparison at all. Whatever we have to

Super Bowl win or sex

Fans were asked if they would prefer their team winning the NFL showpiece over Valentine’s Day lovemaking.

By Desert Star Staff A survey revealed that more than half of US men and women would take their NFL team to win the Super Bowl over sexual intercourse on Valentine’s Day. ‘Pickswise’ conducted a poll where 1,000 male and female football fans were asked whether they would prefer to see their franchise win the grand finale or get intimate with their significant other on the annual celebration for lovers. Perhaps unsurprisingly, 64% of men voiced a preference for witnessing their captain lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on February 13 instead of getting between the sheets with

their Valentine the day after. Female fans didn’t fare much differently, though, with 63% opting to watch their team come out on top in the big game. In a different part of the poll, American football enthusiasts were asked if they would abstain for six months if it meant seeing their team win the final played by the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams this year. Responding to this, 48% of men surveyed and 36% of women stated they would not have sex until August for a Super Bowl win, though 45% of women answered a flat-out “No” than the men’s 40%. Romance isn’t completely dead, however. In the last section, 40% of men and

women polled together said they would spend more on Valentine’s Day gifts than

Super Bowl drinks and snacks. the exact figure said they Furthermore, 28% would spend an equal opted for the reverse as amount on each spectacle.

Republican Senators Nielsen and Borgeas Introduce Bill

Bill would Fund Critical Water Infrastructure Projects By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO – Senators Jim Nielsen and Andreas Borgeas today announced they had introduced Senate Bill 890 to ensure millions of acre-feet of water is stored during wet years instead of being flushed out to sea. “In 2014, California voters approved funding to build large, aboveground water storage,” said Senator Nielsen. “Because of bureaucratic red tape and a lack of sufficient funds due to increasing costs, we haven’t even turned a shovel on Sites Reservoir. That’s unconscionable. We have the money to fully fund that reservoir, and now’s the time to do it.” SB 890 advances the goals of Proposition 1 (2014) by making significant investments in California’s aboveground water storage and conveyance infrastructure. Specifically, SB 890 will establish the Water Storage and Conveyance Fund that will provide: --$2.6 billion to complete the funding of Sites Reservoir in Colusa County; and --$685 million to repair the Friant-Kern/Delta-Mendota Canals and the San Luis Field/San Joaquin Divisions of the California Aqueduct. “California’s water storage and conveyance challenges www.desertstarweekly.com

transcend partisan divides and have been exacerbated due to the recent drought,” said Senator Borgeas, who chairs the Senate Agriculture Committee. “Clean, reliable water in California is not only critical to our country’s economy and food supply, but also our national security. Without proper storage and conveyance investments, California cannot continue to lead the nation in food production.” Completing Sites Reservoir would ensure an additional 1.5 million acre-feet of water is stored during wet years and made available to cities, farms, and the environment during times of drought. California’s Central Valley canals are in severe need of repair. Canal diversion and conveyance capacity have degraded due to substantial land subsidence caused by regional groundwater overdraft. For example, the southernmost third of the Friant-Kern Canal has lost 60 percent of its ability to carry water. As a result, farms, cities, and rural communities that rely on the canal are losing up to 300,000 acre-feet of water per year in deliveries. Similarly, the diversion capacity of the DeltaMendota Canal has decreased from 4,600 cubic feet per

second to 3,211 cubic feet per second at the terminus. The Legislature can fund these critical water infrastructure projects using taxpayer revenue that has already been collected. Under state law, infrastructure projects may be financed using revenue from the General Fund when it exceeds the State Appropriations Limit or Gann limit. The need for reliable and dependable water storage infrastructure and conveyance is vital. Completing Sites Reservoir and repairs on the

Central Valley canals would go a long way toward preserving public health, protecting the

Emotional Safe Spaces Help Children Express Their Big Feelings By Desert Star Staff Many internet memes have been made about toddlers and their temper tantrums. While the outpouring of oversized emotions can be amusing when viewed from afar, most parents and caregivers simply want to know what they can do to help children express their feelings in less dramatic ways. According to child development experts, one of the keys to helping children learn to regulate their emotions is developing emotional literacy and identifying feelings. This can help children recognize those feelings and apply coping strategies to (hopefully) calm down before their feelings overwhelm them. One way to help children work on their emotional literacy is to talk about other people’s emotions. “Sometimes it’s difficult to process our own emotions because that puts you in a vulnerable position,” said Taunya Banta from KinderCare’s Inclusion Services team. “When we’re able to find some detachment from the

immediate emotion, like talking about characters in a story ‘How do you think they feel?’ or ‘Why do you think they feel that way?’ - it opens an opportunity for kids to safely process their own emotions because they’re not in the spotlight.” Another way to help children work through their emotions before becoming overwhelmed is doing what many early childhood teachers do and creating a space filled with things that allow children to find an emotional release safely. Banta recommends creating both a quiet and an Quiet areas allow children to work through their emotions using a fine motor or listening skills. Items in this space could include blankets or pillows to cuddle up in or headphones to listen to relaxing music or audiobooks. Some children may find comfort in expressing their feelings through art, so consider drawing materials or a journal. For young children, a set of pictures or cards showing faces expressing different emotions can

help them as they learn to identify their own feelings. Active areas allow children to use their gross motor skills to work through emotions. If outdoor space is easily accessible, encourage your children to go outside and jump, stomp or run when they start to feel the urge to “let it all out.” An active indoor space could include pillows to scream into or hit and plastic bottles or bubble wrap to stomp on or squeeze. The action and noise can help get the desire to hit or punch. Watch how your children show their emotions and give them safe alternatives. For example, if they tend to yell and hit when they’re upset, give them pillows to scream into or hit. You can also help them designate a box or a specific spot on the wall or floor where they can throw beanbags, wadded-up socks or any soft object. Acknowledge the emotions your children are experiencing and reassure them that while it’s OK to feel that way, it’s just as important they find a safe

Winter Olympics opening ceremony By Desert Star Staff Viewers around the world will be watching curiously when the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics is to mark the official start of the Beijing Games 2022 on Friday. Here’s what we know – and what its director has revealed – about the dramatic launch of more than two weeks of highlyanticipated sporting action. Known as the ‘Bird’s Nest,’ the Beijing National Stadium will become the first venue to host a Summer and Winter Olympics opening ceremony. That’s because the $428 million stadium was built for the Olympics in 2008, holding a record capacity of more than 89,000 for the football final at those Games, when an Argentina side featuring Lionel Messi beat Nigeria with an Angel di Maria goal. Its capacity since 2008 has been 80,000, and it is one of the five venues – from a total of seven – that will be used in 2022 as ‘legacy’ stadiums from the previous Chinese Games.

The stadium has also hosted pop concerts, autosport events and football matches between European clubs. The iconic torch has headed across the three competition zones being used for the Games – Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou – on a journey that began on Tuesday. Luo Zhihuan, the world champion speed skater who set a world record in 1,500m long-track speed skating in 1963, was the first of an estimated 1,2000 torchbearers, putting the flame on its way from Beijing Olympic Forest Park. I have carried the Olympic flame as a representative of the first generation of Chinese winter sports athletes,” said Luo, adding: “My dream comes true.” The design of the torch is based on the traditional Chinese idea that ‘Taoism follows the laws of nature, and nature and humanity are one, draws on the look of the 2008 torch and uses silver and red to symbolize fire and ice. Film director, writer and

producer Zhang Yimou, who directed the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games to acclaim, is responsible for the theatrical spectacular again this time. “In the wake of the pandemic, the world needs a new and strengthened vision,” Zhang told the Xinhua News Agency. “Everything is totally different now – China’s status, the image of China in the world and the rise of our national status. “The burden is very heavy. But, of course, we know we cannot repeat Beijing 2008, so we are striving to be different from it.” Zhang is keeping tightlipped about the details of the ceremony, although he admits to being nervous about a show which will feature only a fifth as many performers as the 15,000 who took part in 2008. Zhang is keeping tightlipped about the details of the ceremony, although he admits to being nervous about a show which will feature only a fifth as many

performers as the 15,000 who took part in 2008. The chief director has said that the flame will be lit in style “unprecedented” in Olympic history and suggested that environmental topics and low carbon emissions have featured in his planning. “This time, the way of lighting will certainly be different,” Zhang revealed, claiming that his cauldron design and lighting will be bold. The ceremony is expected to run for around 100 minutes with themes of China’s desire for world peace, the Games’ slogan of ‘Together for a shared future’ and the Olympic motto of ‘faster, higher, stronger – together. Three rehearsals are said to have taken place during the second half of January, with a final run-through being held on Wednesday. Almost all the participants are teenagers, with sub-zero temperatures likely to be the most significant challenge they will face on the day. Chinese president Xi Jinping, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of

China, and Cai Qi, the party secretary of Beijing and the Executive President of Beijing 2022, will be particularly keen for the ceremony to dazzle the world. Both will be at the ceremony. A list of international leaders expected to include Russian President Vladimir Putin, Serbian leader Aleksandar Vucic and Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. International Olympic Committee boss Thomas Bach is sure to be in the Bird’s Nest, and Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, is said to be attending. There are sure to be headlines about the dignitaries who will not be attending as part of a diplomatic boycott by numerous countries. The administration led by US president Joe Biden is among the governments to have publicly announced they will not be sending non-sporting representatives to Beijing.

ediscovering classic, outdoor winter activities like snowmobiling can provide a simple way to spend time with loved ones. In fact, snowmobile sales are expected to increase 15-20% this winter, according to the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association (ISMA), allowing families to safely social distance and get outside amid the global pandemic. “Snowmobiling is a unique way to experience landscapes in the throes of beautiful winter,” said Pascal Vincent, director of global product management, Ski-Doo. “That’s not to say there aren’t certain precautions that need taken when heading out to maximize fun and ensure everyone has a safe journey when snowmobiling.” 1. Never ride alone. There’s safety in numbers, and that’s especially true with an outdoor activity like snowmobiling. Riding with a friend (or group of friends) is not only safer but can also be more fun. In addition, ensure someone not on the trails with you knows your approximate whereabouts. Send a message or leave a note with the names and locations of trails you’ll be riding, the names and contact info for those you’ll be riding with and an approximate time you plan to be back. 2. Even if not required in all locales, a Department of Transportationapproved helmet can provide warmth and protection as well as fog-free vision. Learning to layer is also essential for maximum comfort. Made with Love Set the table for romance with a delicious date night at home

P

FAMILY FEATURES

lanning a delicious, romantic date night doesn’t have to take you any further than your own kitchen. You don’t have to be an accomplished chef to set the table for romance, but you can take inspiration from simple, quality Italian dishes to celebrate the link between food and love. As these recipes show, a romantic meal can be ready in minutes or, like a great love story, simmered to perfection. To plan the ultimate date night at home, start by choosing one of these dreamy main dishes made with mouthwatering sauces. Flavorful sauces make a great Italian meal, but the sauce doesn’t need to be made from scratch (at least, not completely). For example, Bertolli d’Italia sauces are made in Italy for authentically delicious flavor. They are crafted with tomatoes vine-ripened under the Italian sun, finely aged Italian cheeses, fresh cream and Mediterranean olive oil. The result is a sauce that’s perfect for your date-night meal. Once you select your main course, prepare a simple salad of greens with a drizzle of Italian vinaigrette or Caesar dressing. Pop a loaf of bakery-fresh Italian or focaccia bread into the oven to warm through and serve with butter or olive oil for dipping. If you’re so inclined, cap off the meal with a classic Italian dessert from your local bakery, like tiramisu, cannoli or a creamy panna cotta topped with fresh fruit.
