CVRep Theatre launches a new reimagining of the musical production “Ballroom” By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association As theatre and society, in general, evolve, especially here in the United States,

“Ballroom,” the new reimagined musical is a very appropriate production choice for CVRep to present to its 2019/2020 audiences. It’s another crowdpleasing show that fits the 2019/2020 season theme of “New Beginnings.” It’s also the boldest and

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Rancho Mirage Writers Fest was held from Jan 29 to Jan 31. The diversity of Authors was impressive as almost every topic was covered in today’s society. These are famous authors who sometimes make several appearances and do a book signing after their event. Valet parking went very smoothly for the number of cars attending. Moving from room to room was also done quickly, and it seemed no one was without a seat or a viewing on a TV screen. Each author and moderator spoke for 45 minutes. Topics included Catastrophic events, politics, aging, business,

women, racism, foreign policy, health, economy, education, former presidents, wars, writers, newspapers, White House, fiction and non-fiction, American west, crime, sports, autobiographies, historians, the media, Middle East, our turbulent times and more. On the first day, one of the speakers was the well-known country singer, Tim McGraw, who wrote a book with John Meacham about music. The room was filled with music and McGraw Fans. The book, Songs of America, deals with Patriotism, Protest, and the music that made a nation. The

most audacious production in CVRep history. The Cathedral City-based theatrical company headed by Founding Artistic Director Ron Celona, now in its 11th season of producing quality Equity productions here in the Coachella Valley, has become a beacon for

more professional actors and creative artists who want work in the Valley’s newest, stateof-the-art theatre complex. What began as a dream of Ron Celona’s long-held desire to create an Equity Regional Theatre in the Coachella Valley eight years ago is now a reality.

The stakes were high, but the passion and skills, plus hard work and the generosity of some of the Valley’s loyal Patron’s of the Arts, along with Celona’s dedicated and committed Board of Continues on Page 19

Cameron and Michael Douglas. Photo by Pat Krause. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Rancho Mirage Writers Fest last day brought one of the most famous actors and his son. The Cameron Douglas session was about life and recovery from drugs and prison. He wrote a new book, Long Way Home, about his life. He was very candid about how he pushed the envelope in his addiction. He has served years in prison, 2 years in solitary confinement, for being a drug dealer, thief, and more. Founder of the Rancho Mirage Writers Fest, Jamie Kabler, was the moderator in this conversation as he knew a lot about the struggles and life of Cameron Douglas. Kabler asked him about his childhood and if he ever felt privileged because of his famous family. He said he grew up being taught good manners,

and that showed him how to treat other people. He said that no one gave up on him during this turbulent time, but he did. There are times when you have to give tough love, but Cameron had his own money from a trust fund, but it was not enough to keep him in his lifestyle of drugs and bad company. He never thought he had a problem until he was forced into solitary prison confinement, where he really had to look at his life. His grandfather Kirk Douglas and grandmother, His dad Michael Douglas and his Mom and uncle JOJO, were always there for him. He said that the love of family and friends were so important in turning his life around. He is so happy with his life now as he has two movies coming out, a beautiful daughter, and life is

The next session was with Michael Douglas in conversation with Peter Bart, who knew each other for years. Michael Douglas’s brother Joel gave a short speech before they came on stage, saying his brother was more than and actor and producer. He was dedicatedly loyal to everyone, was an industry into himself, and was a great man, and he was incredibly proud of him. Michael Douglas has won many Awards, 2 Oscars, 5 Golden Globes, and more and celebrates more than 50 years in show business. He has a knack for movies that reflect the changing times with the film he picks. He said he would rather be in a good movie that is known as a good actor. Bart asked him about his

life in movies and how it all got started. He spoke about many of the famous movies he was in and also produced. One of the questions regarded ferocious women in some of his films. He asked Michael if that would be relevant today. Michael has worked with some really great women who took on roles of ruthless women when many would not, especially in the part of the nurse in One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, when many actresses turn down that role. It seems politics comes up in most conversations. Bart asked Michael which nominee for president he favors, and he said Blumberg as he had done a lot for the city of New York and thinks he would be a good president. Another conversation was with Political Consultant James Carville and Adam Carolla,

who has a popular podcast. Carville is the best known for his style in his way of speaking, Very Animated, and open. He helped President Clinton get elected and says that Clinton is way smarter than anyone knows but doesn’t flaunt it. His disdain for President Trump was obvious and says the Democrats have to work to find a way to win in 2020. He gave several ideas but let it be known he is not a fan of Bernie Sanders. He says the dynamics of the nominees will change a lot by May, and its anyone’s ballgame for the nomination. A very spirited conversation by both. He gave no predictions but said any of them could win. Carolla asked the questions, and Carville gave pointed responses to his ideas and what he thinks the Democratic party needs to do to win in 2020.

caucus, insisting there was no “cybersecurity intrusion,” and that a “coding error” has been “identified and fixed.” Price said the delay in Iowa’s caucus results, for which several Democrats seem to have already claimed victory, is because IDP was required to “enter data manually,” as well as to conduct an “investigation” into the coding area supposedly causing all of the issues. With many taking to social

media to criticize Shadow Inc., the group behind the seemingly disastrous app meant to record results in the caucus, Price insisted the app is “sound” and gave accurate if only “partial,” results. Price claims results will be released sometime Tuesday, but the “required paper documentation” has slowed the process down. With several Democrats already claiming victory in

Iowa, Price’s statement has done little to give voters hope in the disastrous app system being used to report results. “These mooks didn’t even try a stress test before the caucus. “Partial data reporting due to a coding error” is the sort of thing THAT WOULD HAVE SHOWN UP IN A PRACTICE RUN,” commentator Esoteric Jeff pointed out. ‘Huge victory’ for Trump US President Donald Trump savaged the Democratic Party on Twitter after their much-awaited Iowa caucuses unexpectedly stalled due to “inconsistencies” in vote-counting. “The Democrat Caucus is an unmitigated disaster. Many expected the results of the Iowa caucuses – a procedure to select delegates to the Democratic National Convention, where the party’s nominee for the 2020 presidential election will be decided – to be revealed on Monday evening. However, local party officials said the announcement of the results will be delayed until sometime on Tuesday because they have found unspecified “inconsistencies” in tallying the votes.

Is HOA Making Solar Installations Too Difficult?

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Hi Kelly, good morning. My HOA is requiring me to install “critter guards” as part of my solar installation, but this will cost me over $1,000. Can the HOA force me to undergo this expense? Your valuable advice is highly appreciated. Thank you very much for your help. With Best Regards, C.J., San Jose

Dear C.J.: Civil Code sections 714, 714.1, and 4746 establish a strong legal preference for solar energy installations in California HOAs. Although a restriction which is “reasonable” is allowed, a restriction which either adds $1,000 or 10% to the cost (whichever is less) is not reasonable and is specifically not allowed. If there is no reasonable way to meet the “critter guard” requirement without a cost of over $1,000, you may want to bring that information to your board, along with a copy of the statute, (and perhaps this column also). Associations that make the wrong choice on this subject are exposed to not only damages and attorney fees, but also a civil penalty. However, don’t rush to court – show your board this information and help to educate them. Most HOA disputes begin with a disparity of information, followed quickly by assumptions of

ill will by each side. This is something that should be quickly worked out as neighbors, once everybody has the same information. Thanks for your question. Sincerely, Kelly Dear Mr. Richardson: The problem with Civil Code 714.1 and its permission of “reasonable standards” for installation of solar panels is that many HOAs are proposing egregious indemnification agreements that go far beyond the maintenance and repair requirements such a system might develop. In our case, we own the roof over our unit- it is not common area. But the HOA has proposed a terrible agreement that we must sign in order to install solar. It goes far beyond the current CC&Rs which already require the owner to maintain and repair the roof and anything attached to it. It requires the owner to indemnify February 5, 2020

the association for anything that happens anywhere or anytime in the future as well as requiring the owner to pay the association’s legal fees for any future dispute on any subject. Unfortunately Civil 714.1 gives them the cover to propose such an agreement. P.K., Vista Dear P.K.: Civil Code 714.1 allows reasonable restrictions such as requiring the homeowner to maintain, repair and insure their system, and requiring homeowners to agree to pay for any future costs to the HOA. Indemnification means that should the HOA incur a cost specifically because of your installed solar system, you would reimburse the HOA from that cost. You describe your roof as your separately owned property which you already maintain and repair. Therefore, it would seem the risk of the HOA incurring a cost is small.

But, what if a part of the installation was dislodged by strong winds, flew off the roof, and damaged another home or injured someone? Why should the rest of the homeowners in your association incur a cost that would not have occurred without your system being installed? So, respectfully, I disagree with you on this. I think indemnity in this regard is fair to your neighbors and you. Thanks for sharing your point of view. Best, Kelly Kelly G. A Personal Mission: Help for Patients with Rare Cancer

By Desert Star Staff People diagnosed with sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, may have to travel considerable distances to get the best medical treatment and now, help is available to meet those travel expenses. Being diagnosed with sarcoma can be frightening and finding treatment may be a daunting task, with only a handful of major sarcoma treatment facilities, like the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Gary Wiener knows this only too well. In 2015, he lost his wife Linda to Liposarcoma. He found, when it comes to quality care, there is strength in numbers. “The more physicians, the more researchers, the more collaboration, the more stateof-the-art care,” says Wiener. “But not everybody lives close to a facility of that description.”

So, Wiener founded the Sarcoma-Oma Foundation to reimburse the travel expenses of patients who need help getting to treatment. Applications are on the foundation’s website at Sarcoma-Oma.org. Sarcoma is a group of cancers that grow in bones and connective tissue. Oma is the Dutch word for grandmother, Linda Wiener’s favorite role in life. Wiener says when his wife was fighting cancer, they had the means to get to the best medical facilities - but he saw many people who did not. “A lot of people have zero income when they’re going through this,” says Wiener. “You know, if they don’t have a significant other who’s bringing in money, sarcoma can really make it so that you cannot work.” He adds the foundation reviews applications twice a year, there are no deadlines

The Sarcoma-Oma Foundation helps people with medical travel expenses and access to resources. (RFBSIP/Adobe Stock) and they try to respond as quickly as possible. Wiener points out that the foundation’s website does more than help with medical travel expenses. It also has a page devoted to what

patients might consider doing the day they’re diagnosed. “This gives you tips on things you could do to speed up your process of getting care, and making you feel a little better about the treatment

you’re getting,” says Wiener. There are about 12,000 cases of sarcoma diagnosed each year, and making it possible to get to a treatment facility is a critical step in patient care.

Bill Would Open Tax Credit to Undocumented Washingtonians

The Working Families Tax Credit would return an average of $350 for qualified families. (JohnKwan/Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff Washington state lawmakers want to open up a working-class tax credit to more residents, including people who are undocumented, student visa holders and some survivors of domestic violence.

Although the Working Families Tax Credit was passed in 2008, it has yet to receive funding -- presenting a major roadblock for lawmakers on this issue. Despite this challenge, lawmakers are hoping filers who use an Individual

Taxpayer Identification Number, or ITIN, in place of a Social Security number also can benefit from the program. State Rep. My-Linh Thai, D-Bellevue, one of the bill’s sponsors, says folks who are undocumented, and working are contributing

to the economy. “They are working and paying tax in our system,” she points out. “So, to me, it’s a matter of fairness and making sure that those who deserve the benefits that the state put out for people receive them as well.” Supporters of the Working Families Tax Credit say it could help balance Washington’s regressive tax code, where the majority of the burden falls on low-income Washingtonians. The Senate version of this bill is scheduled for a public hearing on Tuesday. According to the Washington State Budget and Policy Center, the Working Families Tax Credit would reach about 30% of residents and provide an average income boost of $350. The group also finds expanding the credit to ITIN filers would benefit 53,000 households. “Folks filing with an Individual Tax ID Number are people who are largely immigrant populations who

Celebrating Big Strides in Preventing Cervical Cancer

By Desert Star Staff BELLEVUE, Wash. January has been Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and this year, the focus is on some good news - health professionals are highlighting a largely successful campaign against the disease. Obstetrician/Gynecologist Dr. Mary Beth Welch at Kaiser Permanente in Bellevue says cervical cancer rates have decreased by 75% over the past 50 years in developed countries. She says doctors

have developed an effective process for detecting and treating this type of cancer. “We really attribute that due to widespread cervical screening tests that we have, such as the pap smear, and that helps us identify precancerous changes that can be treated before cancer develops,” says Welch. Welch recommends parents speak to their healthcare providers about vaccines for the human papilloma or HPV virus - for both girls

and boys - at age 11 or 12. Certain types of HPV can cause cervical cancer. She adds women should get regular cervical cancer screenings starting at age 21. In 2018 the Food and Drug Administration approved the HPV vaccine Gardasil for women and men up to age 45 . Previously, it had been approved only up to age 26, and the FDA says it’s still most effective before age 26. The Centers for Disease Control notes about 12,000 February 5, 2020

women are diagnosed each year with cervical cancer caused by certain HPV strains, and it is fatal for four-thousand a year. Welch says it’s important to feel comfortable speaking with a doctor about potential symptoms. “Things like abnormal period is something that we’re very familiar with and we see commonly in our office,” says Welch. “So we say, ‘Come and see us! This is what we train for, and we’re here to

have proactively signed up with the federal government for the purpose of paying their federal income taxes,” says Misha Werschkul, the center’s executive director. Werschkul notes domestic violence survivors use an ITIN to protect their identity from their abusers. The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy estimates in 2017, undocumented immigrants in Washington contributed more than $300 million in local and state taxes. “People that are undocumented are our friends, our neighbors, they’re our family members, and they’re really an important part of our community -- not to mention that they play a really important economic role in all kinds of fields,” points out Robin Engle, communications and development director of OneAmerica, a group that advocates for immigrant rights.

More NC Employers Join Effort to Make Workplaces Family Friendly

By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. -- More North Carolina employers are enacting family friendly workplace policies such as flexible schedules, paid parental leave and support for breastfeeding mothers. One 2018 study found nearly three in four North Carolinians said they would be more committed to their employer if more family friendly benefits were offered. Ann Welton, president of the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce, works with more than 700 local businesses. She says in a competitive job market, retaining high quality workers is becoming increasingly critical across sectors, including tourism and manufacturing. “By enacting some of these policies within the workplace, they’re going to do a better job about attracting and retaining top quality workers,” she states. Welton points to a guide developed by the North Carolina Early Childhood

Foundation that contains research-based practices employers can adopt to keep employees happy and increase productivity. According to the foundation’s biennial report, more than 4,000 employers have looked at the guide. Last fall, Gov. Roy Cooper issued an executive order providing up to eight weeks paid parental leave for state employees. A 2015 study from the Pew Research Center says the number of two-parent American households where both parents work full-time is on the rise. Banu Valladares, who operates a bilingual preschool in Charlotte, says taking the time to research the costs and benefits of offering more paid time off, among other family-friendly incentives, and listening to feedback from her employees have improved retention. “So we were able to implement that, so we increased our PTO for teaching staff from 56 hours

She says employers need to reflect that change in values

and notes workers today are prioritizing a work-life balance. “And they want to be in a workplace that allows them to spend time with family, whether it’s taking a child to a doctor’s appointment or going to a school play, or caring for an

aging parent,” she points out. According to federal data, employee absenteeism due to child care issues costs U.S. businesses $4.4 billion in lost revenue each year.

Florida House panel to debate bill criminalizing sex-change surgeries & puberty blockers for kids By Desert Star Staff A bill that could make it a felony to perform sex-change surgeries on minors, as well as inject them with drugs to delay puberty, is set to go before a Florida House subcommittee next week, as more states consider similar motions. The ‘Vulnerable Child Protection Act’ will be on the agenda of the Florida House Quality subcommittee when it meets on Monday. The bill is sponsored by Republican Rep. Anthony Sabatini, who has long opposed the practice that permits a doctor to treat www.desertstarweekly.com

underage patients suffering from ‘gender dysphoria’ with sex-change surgery and medicine that slows the onset of puberty, providing their parents approve the procedure. The proposed law has drawn swift push-back from Democrats, arguing that the bill outlaws “life-saving healthcare treatment” for teenagers who have not yet come of age. Critics of the ban argue that children who cannot receive such treatment are at a higher risk of depression and suicide. Speaking to the Blaze on

Saturday, Sabatini accused Democrats in the Republicancontrolled legislature who are attempting to shoot down his proposal of “furthering a political agenda” at the expense of children’s health. Citing medical findings on the issue, the lawmaker said that about 80 percent of children tend to “outgrow” their body dysphoria. While the Florida bill still has many hoops to go through before it can become a law, a similar bill has already cleared the House of Representatives in South Dakota. Approved on February 5, 2020

Wednesday, it bans doctors from prescribing puberty blockers for anyone under 16, as well as outlawing sex reassignment surgery. Online response: “Common sense,” the lawmaker tweeted on Saturday, welcoming the news of his proposal moving forward. Common sense — Anthony Sabatini If passed, the law would make it a seconddegree felony for any healthcare provider to engage in the activity aimed at altering a minor’s sex.

When he filed the bill back in January, the lawmaker compared sex-change treatment to maiming, tweeting that “no parent should be allowed to sterilize or permanently disfigure a child.” Today I filed HB 1365, the Vulnerable Child Protection Act. This Bill makes it a felony for a health care practitioner to surgically or medically change the sex of a minor. Groups Challenge Trump Waivers to Build Border Wall

The U.S. Supreme Court will decide whether to review lower court rulings that allow the Trump administration to waive environmental laws for border-wall construction, including a 180-mile stretch in New Mexico. (ArtueoM/Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff Conservation groups have petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to review lower court rulings that waive environmental laws to build the border wall, in New Mexico and elsewhere. The groups contend it’s unconstitutional for the Trump

administration to abandon environmental, health and safety laws to speed Mexican border-wall construction, including along the 180mile New Mexico frontier. Santa Fe-based Bryan Bird, Southwest director for the group Defenders of Wildlife,

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Conservation groups are speaking out against a move yesterday by the Trump administration to remove penalties for companies whose business activities incidentally kill birds. The U.S. Interior Department is finalizing a change to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, or MBTA, first announced two years ago. It removes penalties for bird deaths considered “incidental take,” even in cases of such gross negligence as a massive oil spill. Bob Dreher, senior vice president for conservation programs with Defenders of Wildlife, says this will lead to many more bird deaths. “We already have evidence that businesses and federal agencies have turned their

backs on conservation of birds because of the administration’s policy,” says Dreher. “This may accelerate that. You may see more and more businesses saying, ‘Birds will be killed, but that’s OK - go ahead.’” In the past, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act gave companies incentives to prevent bird deaths with proactive measures, whether it’s placing nets over oil pits or making power lines and wind turbines more visible to birds. The administration says the changes would ease onerous restrictions on commercial activity and infrastructure projects. California Rep. Alan Lowenthal - D-Long Beach - has cosponsored a bill to restore the MBTA to its preTrump interpretation. And it would create a system of permits and mitigation measures for incidental bird deaths.

said the steel walls would threaten protected landscapes and the habitats of hundreds of animals, many on the Endangered Species List. “It’s going to run from the Pacific Ocean all the way to the Gulf of Mexico, and it’s going to cut in half a continent that has

been used by wildlife as well as people,” Bird said. “And so, there’s many species that we’re concerned with that this could be sort of a fatal strike that ends their ability to recover.” President Donald Trump used an executive order to declare a national emergency and divert funds from the military and other federal agencies to build the border wall - actions that are currently facing several legal challenges. Regardless of the outcome of any court cases, Bird said the Trump administration appears to be pushing ahead with construction. “He’s got the waiver authority,” he said. “In other words, he’s waived all federal laws that apply to the border, so he can construct the border wall. And they have the money now, so we expect them to be under new construction any day now.” Bird said his group and others are deeply concerned that a 30-foot-high barrier would affect rivers and wetlands, and also prevent

the migration of a number of endangered species between the U.S. and Mexico. “We had, in 2018, a Mexican gray wolf that crossed over the border from Mexico and wandered into the United States for a bit, and then it wandered back,” Bird said. “These imperiled wildlife, like Mexican gray wolves, are crossing the border in search of new habitat and in search of mates.” The group’s recent petition follows 2018 and 2019 lawsuits, also challenging the administration’s waiver of regulations. Along with Defenders of Wildlife, the coalition includes the Center for Biological Diversity, the Animal Legal Defense Fund and the Southwest Environmental Center. Groups Slam Trump Admin. Move to Weaken Bird Protections

Birds caught in oil spills would no longer trigger fines for oil companies if the Trump administration finalizes its proposed changes to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. (USFWS) “We must make sure that the Fish and Wildlife Service knows that it has the authority to punish bad actors when they kill birds due to negligence,” says Lowenthal. “Right now, the administration and the Department of the Interior are

ignoring its responsibilities.” In September, Science Magazine reported that three billion birds have vanished from North America since 1970 - that’s 30% of the bird population. The researchers blame incidental

take from industry for onethird of those deaths. Disclosure: Defenders of Wildlife contributes to our fund for reporting on Climate Change/Air Quality, Endangered Species & Wildlife, Energy Policy, Public Lands/Wilderness.

picked up by police. Footage from the scene shows police swarming a parked Greyhound bus, which had been cordoned off by police. There were 40 passengers on the bus when the shooting happened. A woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while five other passengers were hospitalized with gunshot wounds. February 5, 2020

HOROSCOPES ARIES

Great opportunities, prospects and advantages begin to appear in your life and your aspiration for success spirals upward. Progress is assured if you pace yourself and are eager for others’ success along with your own. But most important to determine your effectiveness will be completing all jobs and fulfilling all promises. So be careful what you initiate and what is promised.

TAURUS You have energy, ambition, desires & aspirations to achieve a high level of leadership helping people understand how to create a group mind, work together and build true community. At the center of all of this is the template of the new Sharing society. People, certain ones, learn by watching you. Therefore, it’s not good to constantly hide away behind the scenes. Calling all angels now for the new era to begin.

GEMINI You want to break away from your regular life. This is so strong within you I don’t know how you’re coping with it anymore. There are possibly very deep belief systems keeping you from making a change, even temporarily. Would you know what these are? Perhaps a bit of pondering upon this would help. The reality is you’re free. And the call is clarion clear. The group already exists

CANCER Are there difficulties and tensions being experienced within certain relationships? Are there conflicts arising either externally or internally with those close to you or perhaps with friends? If this continues for too much longer, the roots of the difficulty will either get lost or become concretized and hurts will not be healed. Something’s off balance. You need (to see, hear) the whole truth. Then you need to accept it. You can.

LEO Are you in touch with family? Are you entertaining a bit here and there? Are you called to be creative while tending to a segment of society many do not consider important? Are you gathering slowly around yourself a group of like-minded people to help in this task? Something with a wise one, something cultural catches your attention. You will think back into the past for a while. About relationships. And certain trees, snow, fires and waterways.

VIRGO You seek practical solutions to a creative problem. To do this you step into the future, find ways to work that are unusual, innovative, original, modern & novel. Be careful with health. There’s a vulnerability that can create inflammation. Turmeric, curries, East Indian spices and foods - dahls, kitcheree – all

are beneficial for your wellbeing now. Make all working conditions easy for everyone.

LIBRA If someone were to observe closely in order to write a story about you they would see that you have created a strong ethic around the principles of justice, equality & cooperation. However, they will also see that there are areas in your life still waiting for you to incorporate these virtues. Libras want peacefulness in their lives. Do you know how to create it? It begins with the intentions for Goodwill, everywhere, with everyone. Someday…yes?

SCORPIO How does your home feel to you these days? How does it look? Home is your foundation, as a child & later as an adult. It is your refuge, a place to leave, a destination to come back to. Is your home providing these? Do you sense the need for a new home, one that encompasses community (living)? What duties keep you away from home? What new foundations, based on future trends, do you need for you to feel home? Where is home?

SAGITTARIUS Sagittarians begin to ponder and gestate a new state of awareness; thoughts and ideas expanding as each week unfolds. This state concerns creativity, children, romance. Things happen this year unexpectedly, without warning, popping up here

and there out of the blue. Perhaps new artwork or a new book (to be painted, written, published, contemplated). Something’s coming!

CAPRICORN Wherever you find yourself, this is where you are called to serve. In whatever area or capacity, you are able, this is your area of service & serving. At first, we are servants, then servers, then “of service to the world.” Recognize while serving others your own self is also being served. ‘The Good Liar’ and ‘It’ Are Now on DVD

“The Good Liar,” directed by Bill Condon (“Gods and Monsters”) is adapted from Nicholas Searle’s 2016 novel of the same name and stars Helen Mirren as Betty, a retired Oxford professor, and Ian McKlellen as Roy, a skillful con man who will kill when it serves his purpose. As the film begins, the two meet on a dating website. They both lie, at least a little, as he tells her he’s a nonsmoker while puffing on a cigarette. She, in turn, tells him she’s a nondrinker as she sips a glass of wine. Soon they meet in a restaurant and hit it off. While Roy seems to be a frail

widower, we learn that he is actually a skilled con man who, along with his partner, bilks shady investors out of thousands of pounds. He is also capable of murder as we see him shove an angry investor under a train before joining Betty for a casual lunch. As his relationship with Betty warms up, she allows him to move in with her on a strictly platonic basis since he seems in poor health and is allegedly estranged from his only son. Betty’s grandson is unhappy with this relationship and lets Roy know how he feels in no uncertain terms. Betty’s son is also

concerned about the joint financial investment that Betty is about to enter into with Roy. As the film progresses, Betty’s son starts to do some detective work on his own concerning Roy’s past, which partially comes out as the three of them go to Berlin for a few days. While there, we also find out more about Betty’s early life. “The Good Liar” is a pleasant enough diversion, but both Mirren and McKellen are worthy of better material. The film is good, but by no means excellent. DVD featurettes include A Perfect Match: Inside The

event was held in the massive London room. Some of these sessions were simulcast in other rooms, so all could see and hear. John Meacham is a historian of note, and most music fans know Tim McGraw. John Meachum asked Tim the questions to keep the conversation moving. Throughout history, music has played a big part in each moment in that period, from slavery to wars to protests and patriotism. Sounds are important as they signify what we are hearing like the sound of the surf, a baby crying, sadness, death, fears, happiness, divorce, wars, and more. Music defines the times and what the people are thinking. Songs tell a story about life and struggles. McGraw noted the Star-Spangled Banner as a religious song. McGraw grew up with music when he said his mother was a waitress and put his playpen near the Juke Box. He grew up near cotton fields, and when he hears Dixie, it brings back memories. Some of the songs from the past have a totally different meaning than www.desertstarweekly.com

what they were intended at the time. One song was about a black-faced person in NY, and he wondered how you could sing some of these songs without offending someone. He mentioned GOD Bless America and This Land is Your Land. He worried about this and did a tour of three songs that would complement each other instead of offending anyone. The Green Beret song was Number 1 for weeks, but a couple years later would not have been released because of the times. McGraw said Merle Haggard was one of his favorite musicians. He told the story about Bruce Springstein, where he was asked to sing along and do the second verse along with him, and he didn’t know the words. He was embarrassed and said he would never sing a Springstein song after that. They talked about Lee Greenwood and other musicians and songwriters and the impact they made with the songs they sang. He said as an artist, he wants to move people in his Louisiana Style with emotions that will bring back a memory and be relevant in the current times.

Rancho Mirage Writers Fest ‘Politics’

James Fallows, Senator Jeff Flake, Karl Rove and Bret Stephens with the modera- James Carville, Senator Jeff Flake, and Karl Rove. Photo by Pat Krause tor, Robert Shrum. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Rancho Mirage Writers Fest has grown by leaps and bounds. Thousand of people descending in the Rancho Mirage Public Library to listen to a variety of authors and speakers. This yearly event has become huge, and everyone must love to read as people brought and bought books and filled the rooms where authors spoke about their books. There were several rooms, Steinbeck, Didion, London, and Disney, where the sessions were held. The variety of authors ran the gamut of topics. Politics from both sides was a vast topic and filled to overflowing the large rooms. The former Senator Barbara Boxer took the Stage with other authors. I noticed in the crowd many local dignitaries, mayors and councilmen, and the former California Governor Gray Davis. I watched two events where there were 5 people on Stage. Both Democrats and Republicans spoke and opposed each other in a casual setting. The moderator was author Robert Schrum. He kept the conversation lively. The first one I watched was with James Fallows, Senator Jeff Flake, Karl Rove, and Bret Stephens, with Robert Shrum moderating. Karl Rove was asked how he felt when social media made derogatory statements about him and said he rarely reads them. He has staff to do that and let him know if something is worth looking at. Some agreed that the media is corrosive by not getting facts and reporting only what they want their readers and listeners to see and hear. One was worried that

Climate Change is not being addressed as critical. He was hoping they could work across the aisle to get something done with that. There are significant disagreements about what the real facts are. They agreed that in years past, there were little ways to get the messages of their ideas to the public. Today social media plays a big part in letting people hear the news. It is also a destructive force as there is no way to stop people from making their views on both sides, either true or what they want to say to make the opposite side look bad. The conversations were cordial, and no one was offensive to the other on Stage. These conversations last 45 minutes, and that gives all the people attending time to get to the next discussion they are interested in. Scheduled talks stated early at 8:30 lasted until 3:45 with time out for a box lunch provided free. There was also free coffee and water and sweets for those people that wanted a snack during the conversations. The second scheduled talk was after lunch and included James Carville, Senator Jeff Flake, Karl Rove, and Bret Stephens. Robert Shrum was again the moderator who asked very pertinent questions of all on Stage. They all agreed that any nominee could be elected but felt that some of them would drop out after the Iowa caucus in February. One person said that 50 million more Democrats were voting in the last election, and that could make a difference. The previous election saw the highest voter turn out in recent history. One noted that it isn’t always the one they agree with but who they fall in love

with that will get their vote. One noted that the 46 and younger crowd know nothing about socialism or communism as all that was before their time. Some will vote only because they don’t like the other, and that goes for both sides. They reiterated that everyone should work to make an informed choice, and it is essential as every vote counts. One comment was that President Trump was willing to say what others are afraid to say. The response was that Bernie Sanders has all the same strengths. They discussed Bloomberg and said his message is Vote for Me, I am a real billionaire and felt he was not going to win the nomination. The banter back and forth was exciting and brought out their ideas.

One asked if the Democrats would support Bernie Sanders in the long run. Biden is still leading, but they don’t discount Elizabeth Warren but unsure if any could beat President Trump in 2020, but anything is possible. They said that it comes down to their demeanor in the last few months and how they portray themselves and their message. They said it was a bit strange that minorities didn’t rally around those vying for president like Booker and Harris etc. Some felt that Bernie and Warren would likely lose to President Trump, but Biden may have a chance. They discussed the candidates and their feelings on each. One noted Biden had low energy where Bernie has high energy in his speeches.

One indicated that even Bernie did not know how much his programs would cost. One stated that there is a lot more money going to the Democratic nominees, and there is less money spent on the Republican side. One person noted that the Democrats are out of touch with the people. Each speaker had the time to make his thoughts and ideas known. Sometimes they all agreed and then would disagree in a friendly manner. These talks are very enlightening, but most did not sway a person to change his vote. These were their ideas and what they felt which is what you see a lot of on TV, but you got to hear both sides in one session, which made it more explicit without a one-sided opinion.

Desert Ensemble Theatre Company Launches Premiere of “Adoption Roulette” By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association Motherhood is a powerful motivator that drives the need for mankind to fulfill its destiny - the propagation of our species. But the rub of the matter is that some women are barren, unable to have children. Their only recourse, in many cases, is either to have an in vitro fertilization procedure or adoption. Unfortunately, the latter option opens the door for “the charlatans” of the world to take advantage of vulnerable and anxious, naïve young couples wanting to become parents. “Adoption Roulette,” a world premiere play written by Elizabeth Fuller and Joel Vig, seamlessly and artfully directed

by Shawn Abramowitz, is produced by Desert Ensemble Theatre Company (DETC) artistic director Jerome Elliott and Shawn Abramowitz. The powerful drama about foreign adaptions is a true story based on an actual event that takes place in the Winter of 2004, in Weston, Connecticut, Moscow, Russia, and at Vovoysa, an orphanage near the Siberian border. “Adoption Roulette” is an Actors play. The action takes place on a bare-bones stage with no props or set furniture. The physical movements in the play are mimed, and the actors play multiple roles. Yo Younger stars as Elizabeth Fuller, delivering an astonishing portrayal of a woman slowly melting down under the pressure of the

Liz is caught up amid the red tape of a foreign adoption in Russia, without speaking the language. Remember, in 2004, America is immersed in the Iraq War. Strained diplomatic relations between Russia and America also doesn’t help Liz without her husband Reuel Fuller, being by her side for support. Fergus Loughane plays Reuel, Liz’s loving husband, as well as a Delta Airlines pilot, Igor, a Moscow taxi driver, a Flight Attendant, and a Russian Agency Official. Reuel is frustrated and suspicious with the way the adoption process is going and wants Liz to rethink the adoption with another agency, perhaps at home in the states. His Russian character accents are spot-on. Adina Lawson plays Olenka, the sly in-country guide and translator for the Fuller’s while in Russia. She is also Marion, the Fuller’s friend, and family lawyer, Lois and Dianne, family friends, Orphanage Nurse Blatovsky, and a stern and unhelpful Russian Judge. Ms. Lawson’s Russian accents are also especially

convincing lending authenticity to her Russian characters. The beauty of this production lies in the strong performances of the actors who play multiple roles. One can only imagine the mayhem taking place backstage as they jump from character to character, each requiring different costumes and each looking cool, calm, and unflappable when they do reappear in their scenes. Kudos to the backstage dressers that make it all happen. Bless them all. These are the magical moments that actors live for. As the play unfolds, it becomes a bit difficult to accept the incidents being presented on-stage as believable. The roadblocks erected by non-government private Russian adoption agencies for Americans seeking to adopt Russian children is filled with bureaucratic red tape, frustration, and disappointments, along with deceptive policies that Liz and Reuel face in trying to become parents. One forgets, however, that this is a true story, nightmare experience.

Heart Illnesses Can Sneak Up, Even for Healthy People By Desert Star Staff Living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t guarantee you won’t end up with a heart illness. A Wisconsin doctor, along with a heart attack survivor, is raising awareness about warning signs. February is American Heart Month, and experts say it’s a good time to remind people about getting screened for heart disease. Aurora Health Care cardiovascular surgeon Dr. David Kress said the diagnostic part of the process is huge, because it leads to treatment that can prevent something more serious. “Going to the doctor to make sure that you don’t have high blood pressure, you don’t have diabetes and you don’t have high lipids is pretty important, because these are things that can www.desertstarweekly.com

According to the American Heart Association, a person suffers a heart attack in the U.S. every 43 seconds. In Wisconsin, roughly 265,000 people have coronary-artery disease. Kim Christenson is a heart attack survivor from the Milwaukee area. She said when she had her scare four years ago, she was exercising regularly and was in great shape overall. Musical Greats Return With New Sets

Several of this writer’s favorite blues and rock artists have returned with essential new listens. What’s more, legendary rockers Blue Öyster Cult are back with a terrific new full-length concert release as well as a reissue featuring stellar versions of many of their best-known classics. Artist: Tinsley Ellis Title: Ice Cream In Hell (Alligator Records) You might like if you enjoy: Freddie King, Eric Clapton, Albert King Tell me more: Blues rock great Tinsley Ellis is as true triple threat, able to play electric guitar, sing and write songs with a master’s touch. Thus, his latest studio collection “Ice Cream In Hell” cements his well-earned role as a leading member of the contemporary blues scene and one of the genre’s greatest living proponents. Opening with the blistering Albert Kingstyled “Last One To Know,” his heavy baritone voice delivers lines amidst his own persuasive guitar work, that musical dance culminating with a mighty solo that closes out the track. He explores other reaches of his Southern bluesminded universe, including via the frisky “Don’t Know Beans,” the B.B. King-mining title track and “Foolin’ Yourself,” and affecting “Your Love’s Like Heroin” – all are among the scorching cuts on the disc. Across the 11-track album the Atlanta, Georgia native is firmly in command and further defines his signature style for all to hear. Information: TinsleyEllis.com.

Marcus King guests on the cool title track, a Delta bluesmeets-gospel gem with a bouncy flow. “Soul-B-Que” is a funky romp adorned by blues harp, G. Love’s signature rapid-fire vocal approach and stylish work of guest pedal steel guitar player Roosevelt Collier. Keb’ Mo’ takes advantage of his collaborations as well, notably on the playful blues funk turn “Go Crazy.” Keb’ Mo’ and pedal steel guitar great Robert Randolph both show up for “Birmingham,” a driving folk rocker enhanced by the star power. Hawaiian artist Ron Artis II joins G. Love on the breezy “Diggin’ Roots,” an acoustic nugget with a sing-along chorus and good vibes in sync with the inviting sound across “The Juice.” Information: ThirtyTigers.com. Artist: Blossoms Title: Foolish Loving Spaces (Virgin Int’l) You might like if you enjoy: Keane, Phoenix Tell me more: England’s celebrated indie pop quintet Blossoms have a knack for tapping into tuneful, dance floor-ready impulses across their third full-length release “Foolish Loving Spaces.” There is a buoyant and enlivening

spirit across this album’s 10 triumphant songs. The soulful gospel-injected “The Keeper” is a particularly joyful listen, while the catchy “Real Life” and “Your Girlfriend” lyrically delve into the realities of life getting in the ways of youthfuldriven romantic infatuation. The sleek sounds of the immersive “My Swimming Brain,” synth pop shine of “Romance, Eh?” and disco-tinged “Sunday Was a Friend of Mine” are among my other faves on a fantastic return. Information: www.blossomsband.co.uk. Artist: Blue Öyster Cult Titles: Cult Classic; Hard Rock Live Cleveland 2014 (Frontiers Music s.r.l.) You might like if you enjoy: Blue Öyster Cult, Rush, Asia Tell me more: In early December 2019 I caught Blue Öyster Cult as the groundbreaking rock troupe delivered a powerful and inspired concert at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. The quintet’s much-deserved reputation as a must-see live act is certifed via two newly-released collections out now. “Cult Classic” is the 12th studio album from the New York-spawned band. Originally issued in 1994, the

14-track disc features updated recordings of BOC’s biggest hits including the enthralling “Don’t Fear The Reaper,” infectious “Burning For You” and undeniably fun “Godzilla.” Beyond the band’s timeless hits is a palpable pull that casts a welcome appreciation of the bona fide talents of the group; the psychedelic-tinged heavy rockers “”This Ain’t The Summer of Love” and “Flaming Telepaths” are bolstered by lush harmonies. Elsewhere the bluesrocker “O.D.’D On Life Itself,” literate prog rocker “Astronomy” and heavy metal rocker “Cities On Flame With Rock ‘N’ Roll” convincingly captivate. And everywhere across the collection listeners are treated to killer guitar work from Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser (just listen to the dazzling instrumental “Buck’s Boogie”). The reissue comes remastered and with updated artwork. “Hard Rock Live Cleveland 2014” is a stellar two-hour concert recording available in several fan-friendly formats including 2CD + DVD, vinyl, and Blu-ray (this writer was provided the digital audio stream for review). BOC explodes out of the gate with “O.D.’D On Life Itself,” the first of 17 selections

that collectively embrace the troupe’s parade of hits as well as far-flung cuts that capture BOC’s diverse forays into blues, hard rock, progressive rock and experimental veins. “The Red and the Black” is one of those great tracks that is dizzying, somehow combining Celtic, classic rock and guitar-centered rock (including tandem fret play from Roeser and Richie Castellano); a six-minute take on “Golden Age of Leather” is launched with lush a cappella vocals and weaves its way through distinctive sections (including riff rock, progressive, and Byrds-like vocal harmonies) all perfect in their relation to the others. While the potent versions of the band’s radio hits is a surefire draw, the inviting takes on the sumptuous 9-minute gem “Shooting Shark,” bewitching “The Vigil,” lovely “I Love The Night” and rollicking “ME 262” are among the other sonic attractions that make “Hard Rock Live Cleveland 2014” a welcome addition to any rock lover’s library. The 10-minute-plus masterwork “Then Came The Last Days of May” is another standout track on the title, enhanced by a nuanced arrangement and fiery musicianship that builds to an explosive crowd-pleasing finale. In addition to Roeser (lead guitar, lead vocals) and Castellano (keyboards, lead guitar, backing vocals), the lineup includes Eric Bloom (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards), Jules Radino (drums) and Kasim Sulton (bass guitar, backing vocals). Information: www.frontiers.it.

Artist: G. Love Title: The Juice (Philadelphonic/Thirty Tigers) You might like if you enjoy: Tommy Castro, Marcus King, Keb’ Mo’ Tell me more: Singersongwriter/multi-instrumentalist G. Love (aka Garrett Dutton) has released “The Juice,” a Keb’ Mo’-produced LP featuring several high-profile guests who add authentic magic to the glorious proceedings. The album finds G. Love singing, delivering spoken word and fusing gospel vocals, blues guitar, funk, hip hop and more into a musical stew that thrills at every turn. The talented www.desertstarweekly.com

Tax Season Kicks Off with Free Tax Help Program

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- It’s that dreaded time of year again -- tax time! But the good news is that the AARP Foundation’s annual Tax-Aide program is now in full swing, ready to help people prepare right up until the April 15 deadline. Gary Jurovich, state coordinator for the AARP Foundation in Northern California, says highly trained volunteer tax preparers are standing by to help at senior centers, libraries, churches and government offices up and down the state. “All of our new people have to go through extensive training to become certified to do the returns,” he points out. “And all of our returning counselors who come back year after year, they have to go to refresher training

every year. Everybody has to pass three different tests.” Last year, almost 200,000 Californians got free help on their returns. They collected more than $92 million in federal refunds and more than $13 million in Earned Income Tax Credits. Nationwide in 2019, those numbers totaled $1.6 billion in refunds and $200 million from the tax credit. Jurovich says one of the biggest misconceptions is that these services are only for people over 50 or members only. “Some people think that you have to be an AARP member, which is absolutely not true,” he The AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide program runs for the next ten weeks, until Apr. 15, 2020. YouTube bans misleading election videos

By Desert Star Staff YouTube has banned “manipulated or doctored videos relating to the US election, as well as deepfakes and “birthertype conspiracy theories which question candidates’ eligibility for office, with the primaries already under way. Google’s video-sharing platform has stepped up to protect the damsel in distress that is the American electoral process, announcing a blanket ban on deepfakes and “content that advances false claims related to the technical eligibility requirements of candidates on Monday. Technically-manipulated or doctored content designed to mislead users about elections is also banned under the new policy, which arrives too late to impact most voters in Iowa as they head to the first caucus of election season. YouTube also warned that channels that “attempt to impersonate another individual or channel,

“misrepresent their country of origin, or hide links to government actors would be removed, as would those attempting to artificially inflate their views, likes, or comment counts. Accusations of “coordinated inauthentic behavior have been used by Facebook and Twitter to deplatform politicallyinconvenient accounts in the past. A “borderline content policy that calls for suppressing videos from channels that don’t actually break the platform’s rules has also led to a drop in traffic for many content-creators who fail to toe the centrist line. The rules update came with a disclaimer that would no doubt amuse many of the channels that have been removed from YouTube in recent months without warning or explanation; it reads: “As always, we enforce our policies consistently, without regard to a video’s political viewpoint. Somehow, “claims that

a candidate is not eligible to hold office based on false information about citizenship status requirements to hold office in that country in YouTube’s blog post became “birtherism in reporting on the policy by the Daily Beast. The wording was subsequently picked up by other outlets

eager to mock YouTube for being stuck in 2012. US President Donald Trump, once the most prominent proponent of the ‘birther’ theory, backed off it two months before the 2016 election, admitting Obama had been born in the US and pointing to

rival Hillary Clinton as the original source of the rumor. It has only rarely cropped up since, notably in the rhetoric of former Maricopa County sheriff Joe “show me your papers Arpaio.

Teri Ralston, Mary Ewing, Leslie Tinnaro, Juliet Lapointe, Melodie Wolford, Joe Mitchell. Photo by Jim Cox and sung by Bill Nolte. It’s easy to see why Bea has a renewed interest in ballroom dancing. As a couple, Ms. Wolford and Mr. Nolte have nice on-stage chemistry that slowly draws them together, becoming a couple. Solid supporting performances come from an energetic Angie, Bea’s hairdresser, that is winningly played by Teri Ralston, who first urges Bea to come to the Stardust Ballroom; Pauline, the current reigning Queen of the Stardust Ballroom, is nicely performed by Leslie Tinnaro, who sings and gets to name her choice for next year’s reigning Queen. Her ballroom co-host Artie at the microphone is sung and performed by Randy Brenner. Angie’s friends and now Bea’s friends include Mary Ewing as Emily; Juliet Lapointe as Martha and Corinne Levy as Shirley. The ballroom performers and dancers feature Douglas Graham as “rubber legs Harry the Noodle”; Nathan Holland as Johnny Lightfeet; Lovely Alessandra Di Pietro as Sandy and handsome Robin Somes as Charley (a looka-like Yul Brenner) who trip the light fantastic as a dance couple who possess exquisite and athletic dancing moves. It appears that every bar, tavern, and

gin-joint in the world has a Joe the bartender with broad shoulders to lean on and/or a sympathetic ear for listening to the lonely. Frank Sinatra made millions by singing about those after-hours conversations. In the technical credits department led by director Celona, two-time Emmywinning resident design wizard Jimmy Cuomo delivers a breath-taking ballroom set that sports a seven-piece, live on stage orchestra, under the musical direction of Scott Storr. Designer Cuomo’s New York street backdrop, a small boutique shop, and an interior living room area easily rivals any New York show you can see, but with Celona’s productions, you won’t have to leave the Coachella Valley to enjoy fabulous shows. Orchestrations for “BALLROOM” are provided by Richard Bronskill. The Eleven O’clock spot belongs to a clever, terrific musical

number called “Fifty Percent” and the closing number “This Is More Than A Ballroom/I Wish You A Waltz,” both of which are sung by Ms. Wolford and both are winners. Lighting Designer Moira Wilkie Whitaker provides just the right amount of light to see and appreciate the colorful costumes designed by Frank Cazares (although I’m not too sure about that kaleidoscopiclike cowboy jacket worn briefly by Mr. Brown). However, the sharp choreography by Jose De La Cuestra neatly fills the stage with flowing movement and graceful dance moves. “BALLROOM” is an impressive and delightful production that will have its audiences smiling as they leave the theatre. The musical performs at CVRep, Cathedral City, through February 16, 2020. For reservations and ticket information, call the box office at 760-296-2966.
