Swift Signs with Universal By Desert Star Staff SANTA MONICA, Calif., Taylor Swift, one of the music industry’s most creatively and commercially successful artist-songwriters in history, signed an exclusive global publishing agreement with Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG), a leading
global music publisher. “I’m proud to extend my partnership with Lucian Grainge and the Universal Music family by signing with UMPG, and for the opportunity to work with Jody Gerson, the first woman to run a major music publishing company,” said Taylor Swift.
By Desert Star Staff The US Senate has voted to acquit President Donald Trump of impeachment charges brought by the House Democrats, ending the attempt to oust him from the White House ahead of the November 2020 elections. The final vote on the first charge (abuse of power) was 52-48, with Mitt Romney (R-Utah) crossing the aisle to vote “guilty” alongside the Democrats. The vote on the second charge (obstruction of Congress) was 53-47, with Romney returning to the fold. It would have taken 67 votes to convict Trump on either count. “Donald John Trump,
president of the United States, is hereby acquitted,” Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court John Roberts announced after the votes, ending the process that kicked off in September 2019, over allegations that Trump improperly sought foreign influence in the 2020 election by demanding a corruption investigation in Ukraine. Last week, the Senate rejected a proposal by Democrats to call additional witnesses, in a 49-51 vote that saw Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Romney cross the aisle. The president’s lawyers argued that all the
“Jody is an advocate for women’s empowerment and one of the mostrespected and accomplished industry leaders.” Swift continued, “Troy Tomlinson has been an amazing part of my team for over half my life and a passionate torchbearer

Songwriters Hall of Fame with the Hal David Starlight Award and was featured in Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. Swift has penned numerous Billboard No. 1s: “Shake It Off,” “Blank Continues on Page 3

100 Most Romantic Restaurants in America for 2020 By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO, Taking the guesswork out of Valentine’s Day, the most highly coveted date night of the year, OpenTable -- the world’s leading provider of online restaurant reservations -- released its annual list of the 100 Most Romantic Restaurants in America. The list was unveiled just in time for what OpenTable anticipates will be the busiest day of the year for Valentine’s Day reservation booking: February 4, 2020.1 he 100 restaurants revered by OpenTable diners as the most ideal date night spots span 31 states, from Connecticut to California. Each year, the list is curated from over 80 million diner reviews of more than 30,000 restaurants across all 50 states and Washington, DC. This year, Illinois boasts the highest number of restaurants -- an impressive 12 options -- followed by California and Pennsylvania, with eight each. And whether your idea of romance is a
luxurious night out on the town at New York’s Daniel, the relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere at Aba in Chicago, or small bites at Philadelphia’s Double Knot, OpenTable’s report reflects a spot for everyone. “We craft this list every year to help diners looking for inspiration for the most popular date night of the year,” shared Jessica Jensen, Senior Vice President of Marketing at OpenTable. “Whether it’s a special night with your significant other, a girl’s night out, or your first outing with someone new, these restaurants have passed the test of setting the table for exceptional ambience and an incredible meal.” What’s more, OpenTable’s 2019 diner data reveals that thoughtful diners in Alabama, Hawaii, Idaho, and Kentucky booked date nights the farthest in advance, with the highest rates of reservations booked 21+ days before Valentine’s Day. Romantics in Wyoming, Delaware, Washington,
New York, and Nevada, however, could face the hot seat for the highest rates of same-day reservations. OpenTable’s 100 Most Romantic Restaurants in America for 2020 is generated solely from diner reviews collected between December 1, 2018, and November 30, 2019. All restaurants with a minimum “overall” score and number of qualifying reviews were included for consideration. The overall score is made up of unique data points, such as overall diner rating, user klout, total number of reviews, and regional overall rating. Qualifying restaurants were then scored and sorted according to the percentage of reviews, for which “romantic” was selected as a special feature. Simone Biles attempts INSANE vault previously only done by men
By Desert Star Staff US gymnastics star Simone Biles has wowed fans by demonstrating a jaw-dropping element she has been practicing for the Tokyo Games – one which has never been performed by any female gymnast before. The four-time Olympic champion posted a video from her training session, in which she completes a gravity-defying Yurchenko double-pike vault before landing in a foam pit. “2020?” Biles captioned the post, making it clear she might attempt the vault at the Tokyo Games this summer. The extremely difficult gymnastics element – which
consists of a roundoff into the springboard, a back handspring, and a piked double backflip – has never been performed by a female athlete at an international gymnastics’ competition. 2020 — Simone Biles Usually performed by men, the element is far more difficult than the vault which was named after Biles in 2018. Last summer the US gymnastics icon landed an unbelievable tripledouble combination on floor, becoming the first female athlete in history to successfully make the element.

and present danger” to “our democracy,” House Speaker Nancy then waited four weeks to send the case to the Senate. There, Democrats argued that additional witnesses were needed to establish the exact circumstances of Trump’s decision to withhold military aid to Ukraine in order to – they claimed – pressure the government in Kiev into investigating a political rival ahead of the 2020 election. The claim originated with an unnamed intelligence community “whistleblower,” who alerted House Intelligence Committee chair Adam Schiff (D-California) of the phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in July 2019. Schiff and his team of impeachment managers argued that Trump withholding the aid was an attempt at pressuring Kiev into investigating corruption at Burisma, a gas company that had hired the son of Vice President Joe Biden in 2014. Biden is now one of the candidates for the 2020 presidential nomination, and Democrats argued this amounted to foreign interference in the election.
Calling this an abuse of power, Democrats also charged Trump with “obstruction of Congress” for invoking executive privilege and refusing to allow some of the White House officials to testify in impeachment proceedings. Trump’s lawyers argued that Schiff’s subpoenas had no validity until the House voted to actually authorize the impeachment process, on October 31. They also said that the president’s actions were perfectly consistent with
his constitutional authority, that investigating Burisma did not amount to Ukrainian interference in US elections, and that Trump was denied due process rights because Democrats did not give the Republican minority a hearing day or the right to call their own witnesses. The acquittal comes a day after Trump’s triumphant State of the Union speech, and the embarrassing fiasco of the Democrats’ caucuses in Iowa, where
even according to incomplete and questionable results, Biden ended up fourth. Trump is only the third US president ever to be impeached in the House, after Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1999. In all three cases, the impeachment failed in the Senate, allowing the president to stay in office. Contrary to popular opinion, Richard Nixon was never impeached – he resigned before the official proceedings could begin, in August 1973.

its first week of release, and in just five months, it has already surpassed 5 million, including more than 1 million in China, where the release earned Swift a new record for an international artist. ‘The Good Liar’ and ‘It’ Are Now on DVD
“The Good Liar,” directed by Bill Condon (“Gods and Monsters”) is adapted from Nicholas Searle’s 2016 novel of the same name and stars Helen Mirren as Betty, a retired Oxford professor, and Ian McKlellen as Roy, a skillful con man who will kill when it serves his purpose. As the film begins, the
two meet on a dating website. They both lie, at least a little, as he tells her he’s a nonsmoker while puffing on a cigarette. She, in turn, tells him she’s a nondrinker as she sips a glass of wine. Soon they meet in a restaurant and hit it off. While Roy seems to be a frail widower, we learn
that he is actually a skilled con man who, along with his partner, bilks shady investors out of thousands of pounds. He is also capable of murder as we see him shove an angry investor under a train before joining Betty for a casual lunch. As his relationship with Betty warms up, she allows
him to move in with her on a strictly platonic basis since he seems in poor health and is allegedly estranged from his only son. Betty’s grandson is unhappy with this relationship and lets Roy know how he feels in no uncertain terms. Betty’s son is also concerned about the joint financial investment that Betty is about to enter into with Roy. As the film progresses, Betty’s son starts to do some detective work on his own concerning Roy’s past, which partially comes out as the three of them go to Berlin for a few days. While there, we also find out more about Betty’s early life. “The Good Liar” is a pleasant enough diversion, but both Mirren and McKellen are worthy of better material. The film is good, but by no means excellent. DVD featurettes include A Perfect Match:
Inside The Good Liar” and deleted scenes.

“It: Chapter Two” brings the Stephen King two-part horror saga to an end. It’s about time. In the first installment, a group of young teens encounters a genuinely creepy clown figure who lives in the sewers beneath their New England town. After being traumatized, they manage to make him go away. At least for a while. Alas, he is back and determined to kill as many as possible this time around unless they reunite and make him go away--forever. Do they? The DVD comes with several behind the scenes features and commentary by director Andy Muschietti. Rated R for disturbing violent content and bloody images throughout, pervasive language, and some crude sexual material.
Desert Ensemble Theatre Company Launches Premiere of “Adoption Roulette”
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association Motherhood is a powerful motivator that drives the need for mankind to fulfill its destiny - the propagation of our species. But the rub of the matter is that some women are barren, unable to have children. Their only recourse, in many cases, is either to have an in vitro fertilization procedure or adoption. Unfortunately, the latter option opens the door for “the charlatans” of the world to take advantage of vulnerable and anxious, naïve young couples wanting to become parents. “Adoption Roulette,” a world premiere play written by Elizabeth Fuller and Joel Vig, seamlessly and artfully directed by Shawn Abramowitz, is produced by Desert Ensemble Theatre Company (DETC) artistic director Jerome Elliott and Shawn Abramowitz. The powerful drama about foreign adaptions is a true story based on an actual event that takes place in the Winter of 2004, in Weston, Connecticut, Moscow, Russia, and at Vovoysa, an orphanage near the Siberian border. “Adoption Roulette” is an Actors play. The action takes place on a bare-bones stage with no props or set furniture. The physical movements in the play are mimed, and the actors play multiple roles. Yo Younger stars as Elizabeth Fuller, delivering an astonishing portrayal of a www.desertstarweekly.com
woman slowly melting down under the pressure of the fraught situation she finds herself in. Liz is caught up amid the red tape of a foreign adoption in Russia, without speaking the language. Remember, in 2004, America is immersed in the Iraq War. Strained diplomatic relations between Russia and America also doesn’t help Liz without her husband Reuel Fuller, being by her side for support. Fergus Loughane plays Reuel, Liz’s loving husband, as well as a Delta Airlines pilot, Igor, a Moscow taxi driver, a Flight Attendant, and a Russian Agency Official. Reuel is frustrated and suspicious with the way the adoption process is going and wants Liz to rethink the adoption with another agency, perhaps at home in the states. His Russian character accents are spot-on. Adina Lawson plays Olenka, the sly in-country guide and translator for the Fuller’s while in Russia. She is also Marion, the Fuller’s friend, and family lawyer, Lois and Dianne, family friends, Orphanage Nurse Blatovsky, and a stern and unhelpful Russian Judge. Ms. Lawson’s Russian accents are also especially convincing lending authenticity to her Russian characters. The beauty of this production lies in the strong performances of the actors who play multiple roles. One can only imagine the mayhem taking place back-
L-R Yo Younger, Adina Lawson & Fergus. Photo credit: Vanessa Michel stage as they jump from character to character, each requiring different costumes and each looking cool, calm, and unflappable when they do reappear in their scenes. Kudos to the backstage dressers that make it all happen. Bless them all. These are the magical moments that actors live for. As the play unfolds, it becomes a bit difficult to accept the incidents being presented onstage as believable. The roadblocks erected by non-government private Russian adoption agencies for Americans seeking to adopt Russian children is filled with bureaucratic red tape, frustration, and February 7, 2020
disappointments, along with deceptive policies that Liz and Reuel face in trying to become parents. One forgets, however, that this is a true story, nightmare experience. The opening night audience was introduced to playwright Elizabeth Fuller following the performance, who said she enjoyed the show and seeing herself portrayed on the stage by Ms. Younger, adding that it’s all true. Everyone has a story to tell. It’s just that some stories are more compelling and frightening to share than others. In the technical department led by director Abramowitz, the production is designed by scenic and
costume designer Frank Cazares. The lighting is designed by Ashton Bolanos. Assistant director Cameron Keys, complete the creative team. The production is stage managed by Sierra Barrick. “Adoption Roulette,” is a riveting production that performs at the Palm Springs Woman’s Club on the Pearl McManus stage on Friday, February 7, at 7 pm on Saturday, February 8, (two performances – 2 pm and 7 pm) and Sunday, February 9 a matinee at 2 pm. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property.
