“Please Be Mine” U.S. Census Bureau Facts for Features: Valentine’s Day 2017: Feb. 14 By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON, -Expressing one’s affection to another is a celebrated custom on Valentine’s Day. Sweethearts and family members present gifts to one another, such as cards, candy, flowers and other symbols of affection. Opinions differ as to who was the original Valentine, but the

most popular theory is that he was a clergyman who was executed for secretly marrying couples in ancient Rome. In A.D. 496, Pope Gelasius I declared Feb. 14 as Valentine’s Day. Esther Howland, a native of Massachusetts, is given credit for selling the first massproduced Valentine’s Day cards in the 1840s. The custom

Ideas for Twirking your Business Plan

By Janis Gough Whether you are starting a new business or fine tuning the one you have, this new year has new beginnings and I wish to impart some business ideas for moving your plan forward. Start by reviewing your mission and purpose statement. It should be a simple message offering a basic “value proposition” to potential clients. Begin planning by recognizing your own strengths and weaknesses. No one can do it all successfully, thus you want to hire talented people

who complement you in a way that their talents fill in the areas of your weaknesses. The greatest investment of your time will be in interviewing your potential employees. By using a great selection of questions for their interview will start the weeding out process. Never hire someone on the first interview. You need this employee to be a perfect fit as they will be your greatest source for building a strong foundation for your enterprise. Don’t falter on doing the background checks since this will reveal past performance and “skeletons” in the closet. A great way to measure how one fits with your organization is by having them take the Gallup Q12 survey. This survey will evaluate and measure attitudinal outcomes (satisfaction, loyalty, pride, customer service intent, and intent to stay with the company) and those responses, that measure actionable issues that drive the above outcomes. The quality of an organization’s human resources is perhaps the leading indicator of its growth and sustainability. Employee attitudes relate to various organizational outcomes. When you hire the right talent, you will not need to micromanage them. Having to oversee the work of an employee will absorb the time you need to bring success to your venture. Spend time on strategic

thinking (one to two hours a week), by focusing on where you want to go with the business, where you are at now and where you started. A moment of thinking is worth hours of doing. Every business should have Mentors, those who have walked in your shoes and have overcome problems you may encounter. The closest distance between two points is a straight line. The more you avoid landmines along your course, the more time you will have to stick with your strategic plan. Find mentors greater than you and mimic their success. Seek out the right partners and grow that relationship by maintaining a continuous dialogue. Like minded people who share similar professions will most likely grow greater wealth working together than trying it on your own. View your business model as how the outcome would be five years from now. Have a vision for the future and work backward to achieve it, a strategy to accomplish that vision with a team that can execute it, and a focus on your firm’s culture, which is an area where most firms fall short. By creating a budget along with a monthly flow chart, you can stay on top of anticipated productivity and stick with your planned cost of production. 97 US firms, including Apple & Google, lean on Trump travel ban in court tech heavyweights such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, Intel, Twitter, eBay, Netflix, and Uber, and also non-tech companies, including Levi Strauss and Chobani. They argue that the executive order, which has been dubbed a “Muslim ban” by critics, hurts the American economy. “The Order represents a significant departure from the principles of fairness and predictability that have governed the immigration system of the United States for more than fifty years—and the Order inflicts significant harm on American business, innovation, and growth as a result,” the brief says. “The Order makes it more difficult and expensive for US companies to recruit, hire, and retain some of the world’s best employees. It disrupts

ongoing business operations. And it threatens companies’ ability to attract talent, business, and investment to the United States,” it argues. The document also highlights the role of immigrants and their children as innovators in America and questions the lawfulness of the ban. The US tech sector has been amongst the most vocal in criticizing the executive order since it was signed by President Trump in December. The controversial move was blocked nationwide by a federal judge last week, angering the White House. The Trump administration unsuccessfully tried to overturn the block over the weekend and has until Monday to present arguments to try to convince the Court of Appeals to lift it.

By Desert Star Staff Nearly 100 American firms, including tech giants Apple, Google and Microsoft, have filed a legal brief supporting a case challenging the socalled ‘Muslim ban’, saying the White House’s restriction

“is inflicting substantial harm on US companies.” The ‘amicus curiae’ brief, which was filed with the US Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit in San Francisco on Sunday, supports a lawsuit brought by several

US States to challenge President Donald Trump’s executive order temporarily banning citizens of seven predominantly Muslim nations from entering the country. The 97 companies backing the brief include

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – Advocates for end-of-life choices are concerned about President Donald Trump’s pick for U.S. Supreme Court justice, Neil Gorsuch. Washington is among six states where medical aid in dying is an option for terminally ill patients at the end of their lives. In 2006, in his book “The Future of Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia,” Gorsuch argued against the practice. However, Kevin Díaz, national director of legal advocacy for the group Compassion and Choices, notes that assisted suicide and euthanasia are far different from medicalaid-in-dying laws. “Medical aid in dying is when a medical professional, a physician, prescribes a life-

ending medication to give to a person who is an adult, who is terminally ill, which means six months or less to live, and who will then selfingest the medication if and when suffering becomes too great,” he explains. Gorsuch argues in his book that assisted suicide could open the doors to considering some lives less valuable. But Díaz emphasizes that the six states that have approved these laws do not allow medical aid in dying for the purposes of assisted suicide or mercy killings. He separates assisted suicide as a term used when people who are not sound of mind are convinced to kill themselves. Díaz says Compassion and Choices is working on a case in Vermont in

which physicians are asking to be exempt from their legal requirement in the state to inform terminally ill patients about the option to end their lives. He says this is where erosion of the law is most likely to occur nationwide, and could even extend to health care organizations wishing to be exempt because of their religious views. “It would be unfortunate to essentially allow physicians to not provide the whole truth to patients or give patients all the information that they need to make educated decisions in consultation with their loved ones and family members and spiritual advisors,” he states. Events Fuel Civic Engagement, Fundraising in NC

By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. -- Two weeks after his inauguration, President Trump’s recent policy decisions are having some unexpected side effects. In North Carolina and across the country, they’re fueling an unprecedented level of public engagement. Groups like the American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood report millions of dollars in fundraising and thousands of new members. Mike Meno, communications director with the ACLU of North Carolina, said the historic support will help his group carry out its mission through this new administration. “Groups like the ACLU are going to do what we can, as always, to hold the government accountable, to work through the court system,” Meno said. “But in order to do this work, we really rely on the support of our members.” According to Meno,

membership nationally has doubled since the election, to more than 1 million ACLU members across the country. Groups like his will use the donation dollars to advocate for people who might be adversely affected by President Trump’s executive orders, in Congress and in court. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic has seen a 15 percent increase in online donations, and applications from volunteers have increased from a dozen a month to more than 100. Communications manager Sarah Eldred said that with an energized base, the organization has renewed strength. “People are getting engaged in ways that do last a long time, so they’re starting volunteer opportunities where they’re engaging their neighbors, and they’re throwing house parties and meetings,” Eldred said. “And it’s going to be a long fight, but I think our volunteers so

doesn’t simply end when we cast our ballots on Election Day,” Meno said. “And that it’s absolutely necessary that ‘We the People’ hold officials accountable.” In addition to donating and volunteering, people are turning out at protests and marches. More than 500,000 attended

the Women’s March On Washington, and 17,000 were at the sister march in Raleigh. A big crowd is expected on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the annual Historic Thousands on Jones Street March in Raleigh, which will involve more than 200 organizations.

Amendment would overturn the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision, which said corporations have the same constitutional rights as individuals and identified political donations as a protected form of free speech. Keyan Bliss, communications director for the group Move to Amend, said that ruling freed up corporations, some backed by foreign entities, to pour cash into American elections to influence the outcome. “This basically has precipitated the rise of super PACS, which have now helped increase campaign

spending during general elections to record highs, every election,” he said. “In short, our voices are being drowned out in favor of wealthy corporate interests.” People who agreed with the Supreme Court decision take the view that corporations should have the First Amendment right to free speech and the right to donate as much as they want privately to any candidate or cause. To pass, the amendment either would need a twothirds vote in both houses of Congress and then be passed by three-quarters of state legislatures, or three-quarters of the states could approve it and force a constitutional convention. The amendment has been introduced multiple times in the past few years, but the Republican majority in Congress has blocked a vote. However, Bliss said 18 states and hundreds of city councils and county boards have passed nonbinding resolutions supporting the idea of overturning Citizens United. “We’re hoping that we are able to pressure Congress to take action,” he said, “with the threat that states will take action if they do not.” Bliss said Move to Amend is working to build its grassroots operation in Nevada and other states, and is planning a public forum March 14 in Reno. The text of the proposed amendment is online at movetoamend.org.

Seniors Ask Congress to Protect Medicare

AARP is launching a campaign to protect Medicare as Congress considers making changes to the program. (GlynLowe.com/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff Even though President Trump promised during his campaign to protect Medicare, lawmakers in Congress are signaling that they would like to make changes. In response, AARP is launching a campaign to protect the

program, which serves more than 700,000 Oregonians. Medford resident Don Bruland, a retiree with a pacemaker that was recently replaced - a procedure covered by Medicare - is worried the voucher system proposed by members of

Congress will put health insurance out of reach for people like him. “It would be just impossible to get affordable insurance,” Bruland said. “And what I like to think of is that, with this implant I will be able to continue to volunteer in the

community and be a part of my grandchildren’s lives.” He said, especially for seniors on fixed incomes, the out-of-pocket costs left over in a voucher system would be too high. And he’s worried that insurance companies under a voucher system may not be willing to cover his next pacemaker replacement. Jerry Cohen, director of AARP Oregon, said a voucher system would shift risks onto seniors. Whereas Medicare has a guaranteed set of benefits for everyone, the voucher system would defer to insurance companies, possibly leaving some seniors behind. Cohen added that Medicare is a benefit program all Americans pay into. That’s important for the more-than 800,000 Oregonians age 50-64, like him, who are about to age into benefits. “Basically, this would really jack up my health-care costs

in the long run,” Cohen said. “So, again, for those that say, ‘Well, I’m not on Medicare yet,’ I’m at even greater risk, in terms of cost-shifting.” Cohen said rising outof-pocket costs already are a concern when it comes to both public and private health coverage, and that it could become worse under a voucher system. This is especially concerning for the 5 percent of Oregonians 65 and older who live under the poverty line. Bruland said Medicare has worked for him, but he’s worried the next generation won’t have the same benefits. “I want to make sure that my children and grandchildren have the same thing,” he said. “In fact, I’m much more concerned about their futures and having a health care program than I am about my own.”

Student-Loan Debt: A Problem that Affects a Million Wisconsinites By Desert Star Staff MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin now ranks among the top five states in the nation for percentage of college grads holding student loan debt, with the average Wisconsinite carrying around $30,000 in loans. Student loan debt cannot be discharged in bankruptcy and is all but impossible to refinance as you can a mortgage or a car loan. A bill to change that in Wisconsin 2015 SB 194, called the Higher Ed Lower Debt Act - has languished in the legislature for years while the problem has continued to grow. Scot Ross, executive director of the public policy non-profit group One Wisconsin Now, said it’s not just a problem that affects young people. He said 15 percent of student loan debt is held by people over age 50. “And this statistic ought to scare everybody: in the

year 2014, 155,000 seniors over the age of 60 had their Social Security payments garnished because of student loan debt,” Ross said. The Higher Ed Lower Debt Act would create a state authority to help borrowers refinance their student loans at lower rates, and would give a tax break to those paying off student loans. Ross said he hopes the Act will get a fair hearing in this new legislative session. The student loan debt crisis is a problem in every state, Ross said, and while Wisconsin has played a leadership role by at least proposing legislation to help ease the crisis, part of the problem is the federal government itself, which profits greatly from student loans. “There was a study in 2013 that showed that the interest from student loan debt allowed the government to collect $51 billion,” Ross said. “And to put

About 43 million Americans are now carrying a total of more than $1.4 trillion in student loan debt. (zimmytws/iStockPhoto) that in perspective, that year the most profitable corporation in America, Exxon-Mobil’s profits were $46 billion.” Ross said there are nearly 1 million Wisconsinites who owe more than $19 billion in student loan debt. He said the Walker administration is

making the problem worse, by cutting funding for higher education in record amounts. Ross said a 2016 poll showed wide agreement that the Higher Ed Lower Debt Act should be passed. “Bipartisan support at over 84 percent, so Republicans

and Democrats both think this is a common sense solution,” he said. “For whatever reason Governor Walker and his Republican legislative leaders do not. I would think they’d join us in trying to come up with real solutions.”

As discussions about the future of the ACA continue at the national and state levels, the Tennessee Medical Association is weighing in on how to improve the quality of health care. How Will California Clean its Air?

Multiple oil refineries on the California coast contribute to the state’s persistent air-quality problems. (Thomas Hawk) By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES - Southern California has long been plagued with dirty air - so dirty that clean-air advocates claim the entire South Coast basin has never been in full compliance with the federal Clean Air Act. But today, the South Coast Air Quality Management District is to vote on developing a long-term plan for better air quality by 2023. To that, Evan Gillespie, the Sierra Club’s California state director, said, “Don’t hold your breath.” Despite California’s clean-energy strides,

Gillespie said, fossil-fuel interests have been fighting to keep things as they are. “The refineries for decades have been able to avoid installing life-saving pollution controls,” he said, “so that’s one really critical outcome that we’re seeking, to ensure that the oil industry - which has no shortage of profit - takes the actual time and investment to protect its neighbors.” The South Coast district includes four counties - Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino - with about 17 million residents. There are

multiple air-pollution control districts throughout the state - including the San Joaquin Valley, San Diego, Santa Barbara and the Bay Area - all with separate plans and timelines based on their own air quality and deadlines set by the Environmental Protection Agency. However, with a new EPA chief in the works and an administration optimistic about the use of fossil fuels, including what’s being termed “clean coal,” Gillespie said he is worried. “When the coal industry talks about ‘clean coal,’ they’re ignoring mercury,

sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides – all the other pollutants that directly impact people’s health,” he said. “And so, even if the industry could capture its CO2, you’re still left with significant airquality problems that stem from the burning of coal.” People often think of vehicles, ports and refineries as the contributors to air pollution. However, Christian Garza lives in the southeastern California town of Mecca, where farming is the big industry, and said crop-spraying is part of life there for everyone. “If we’re lucky, it’s in the summer when the kids aren’t there, but sometimes it’s during the middle of the school season, so they have to breathe it in,” said Garza, youth director of the Sierra Club’s My Generation campaign. “It’s just not very healthy for them.” Garza, 18, lives with asthma and said he once had a lung collapse as a result of the disease. According to the Sierra Club, more than 5,000 people a year die prematurely in Southern California from air pollution. More information is online at aqmd.gov.

New Look at Modernizing Voter Registration By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – Modernizing voter registration practices can register more voters and protect the integrity of elections, according to a report from the Brennan Center for Justice. President Donald Trump has claimed that millions of people voted illegally in the November election. Though numerous studies show that in-person voter fraud is extremely rare, some states have passed voter ID laws that opponents say disenfranchise many eligible voters. But according to report author Myrna Perez, director of the Brennan Center’s Voting Rights and Elections Project, one big problem is outdated, inaccurate voter registration rolls. “Addressing this problem will go a long way to getting more people on the rolls,

and will be cheaper and easier to administer, and will make our elections more secure,” she states. The report, called “Election Integrity: A ProVoter Agenda,” includes recommendations to improve the integrity of elections without creating obstacles to voting. One way is to automatically register voters at state offices, such as the Department of Motor Vehicles. Instead of asking people if they want to register, Perez says they can be given the choice to opt out. “Before the transaction is completed, the voter is told, ‘You have the opportunity to decline to register to vote, but if you don’t decline, we’re going to put you on the rolls,’” she explains. The information would then be transmitted

electronically to the board of elections rather than sending paper forms that have to be entered by hand. The report acknowledges that nationwide, voter rolls contain millions of errors, including people who have died, or moved and registered in a new state. Perez says it’s important to remove invalid names, but it needs to be done carefully. “When people call with

problems about purges, it’s because it was a sloppy purge that captured people who should have stayed on the rolls, and those are mistakes that we need to make sure we avoid,” she stresses. The report says the greatest threats to election integrity are not individual voters, but unsecured systems, including computerized voting machines that can be easily hacked.

and 3:00 PM, with each show lasting about an hour. There is no need to arrive hours in advance of the event. Everyone who attends the event will be able to submit an application. We will select participants to come to the stage and audition via a random draw. How does it work? There are three Wheel of Fortune shows during each day of a Wheelmobile event. Each show lasts approximately one hour. Everyone who comes to a Wheelmobile event will receive a color-coded application. The color of the application tells you what time the game you are eligible for will begin. Fill out your application and drop it in a nearby receptacle. Just before show time, we will put all the applications in a big golden drum that sits on the stage. When the show begins, our Wheelmobile host will pick applications at random from the drum and call participants up to the stage (in groups

of five) to play the game. On stage, we will do a brief interview with each contestant and play a version of the Wheel of Fortune Speed-Up Round. Each person who comes up to the stage will be evaluated as a potential contestant for the show. At the end of the puzzle all contestants on stage will be awarded a prize. (Wheel of Fortune hats, t-shirts and duffle bags are just some of the stuff you might win.) Wheel of Fortune is looking for good game players who are energetic, enthusiastic and fun. This is your opportunity to shine.Show us what you’ve got! After the Wheelmobile event in your area has been conducted, we will choose the people we believe will be the best candidates for the show (based on their overall performance on stage) to take part in a final round of auditions. These final auditions will take place in the Palm Springs area within a couple months after our last event date. We will get as many people up to the stage as we can. February 8, 2017

However, we know there will be many more folks at our Wheelmobile events than we can possibly audition. For this reason, we will reserve some slots in the final auditions for those individuals who attended Wheelmobile events but did not make it up to the stage. After all Wheelmobile events have been conducted, we will draw a number of names at random from all the applications we receive in the Palm Springs area for these slots. If you are invited to the final auditions, you will receive a letter or email within a couple months of our last Wheelmobile event. What are the contestant eligibility requirements? You must be 18 years of age. You are not eligible to be a contestant on Wheel of Fortune if you work for, or are related to, anyone who works for Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., Sony Pictures Television Inc., Sony Electronics Inc., Sony Pictures Television International, Quadra Productions, Inc., CBS Television Distribution Group, Enteractive Solutions Group, The Visionaire Group, Klick Communications Inc., Promotional Consideration Inc., game show prize suppliers, KMIR-TV (including its

advertisers and affiliated radio stations), or any TV stations or networks broadcasting Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy!. You are not eligible to appear on Wheel of Fortune if you have appeared on another game show, datingrelationship show or reality show in the last year or three game shows, datingrelationship shows or reality shows in the last ten years. You are not eligible if you have appeared on any version of Wheel of Fortune, including “Teen Week,” “Wheel 2000,” or the daytime version of the show. All expenses incurred while interviewing and (if selected as a contestant) appearing on the show, including airfare, hotel, etc. are the responsibility of the applicant. A contestant audition does not guarantee a spot on the show. The applicant understands that Wheel of Fortune is under no obligation to use him/her as a contestant. It is entirely at the producer’s discretion. Reasonable accommodations shall be made for persons with physical limitations and/or disabilities. Watch wheel of fortune weeknights at 7:00 pm on KMIR. ‘Motown’-The Memories, Magic and Music at the Pantages

The Temptations MOTOWN THE MUSICAL First National Tour (c) Joan Marcus, 2017 The swinging, song-filled Broadway hit “Motown: The Musical” is based on Berry Gordy’s book “To Be Loved: The Music, The Magic, The Memories of Motown” and is filled to the brim with music from the legendary Motown Catalog. As the founder of Motown, Gordy created music that reached out across a racially divided nation, and in so doing, he transformed popular music. He also launched the careers of such musical icons as Diana Ross and The Supremes, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson and The Jackson Five. While the show is autobiographical, it equally important takes a look back at America during segregation and the life and death of Reverend Martin Luther King. And for an older generation, there are countless songs from their youth, a time when Americans all watched “The Ed Sullivan Show.” on TV every Sunday night. In Act I, circa 1964, Diana Ross makes an appearance on the show and the Ed Sullivan impersonator was hilarious. It made me feel like a little kid as I watched his performance.

The cast is outstanding from Chester Gregory (Berry Gordy), Allison Semmes (Diana Ross), David Kaverman (Smokey Robinson), Jarran Muse (Marvin Gaye) to CJ Wright and Raymond Davis Jr., two gifted youngsters who alternate in the roles of the young Berry Gordy, young Stevie Wonder and the young Michael Jackson. On opening-night 11-year-old CJ Wright from Upland, Calif. performed and brought the house down when he came out to take his curtain call bow. Michael Jackson would have been delighted by CJ’s verve, bounce and talent. The show is all about Gordy and the founding of Motown in the Motor City of Detroit. It begins at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium as the stars whose careers he launched have come to thank and honor Gordy with an evening of songs. The year is 1983. Gordy, however, does not plan to attend since so many of these singing sensations have left his label for more lucrative contracts. The story then goes back in time to the beginning of Motown. We see how Gordy discovered his young singers

and shaped their individual careers. It soon becomes obvious that they had a shared affection for one another, even after they moved on. The ensemble cast is large, and every single performance blends together like a Motown melody. And oh the music. Songs in the show include: “ABC,” “ Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “Baby I Need Your Lovin,’ ” “Baby Love,” “Do You Love Me,” “I Can’t Help Myself

(Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” “I Hear a Symphony,” “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “My Girl,” “My Guy,” “Shop Around,” “Hey Mr. Postman,” “Stop in the Name of Love” and many, many more. In fact it was hard not to want to sing along and at one point the whole audience actually gets the chance to sing along with Allison Semmes who plays Diana. The production values are also excellent— from the sets and lighting design to period costumes. And on opening night, as the audience was giving the show a standing ovation, who to our wondering eyes should appear but Berry Gordy himself. And he was joined on stage by the real Smokey Robinson. It was an evening of musical highlights. Oh what a night. “Motown,” at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre through February 12 only. Then from February 14 to 19 come and enjoy “Circus 1903” with circus acts and giant elephant puppets designed by the creators of the magnificent “War Horse” puppets. Coyote Stageworks dances its way into audience hearts

David Engel Loretta Swit Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks photo by David A Lee By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Coyote StageWorks, the professional theatre company of Palm Springs, is known for entertaining, brilliantly-produced and performed productions, has hit another home run with their current snappy, energydriven comedy “Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks”. Insightfully written by Richard Alfieri, and inventively directed by Larry Raben, “Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks”, now on stage at the Annenberg

Theatre, Palm Springs, stars Loretta Swit as Lily and David Engle as Michael. Ms. Swit who portrayed the character of Major ‘Hot Lips O’Houlihan, on the long running smash-hit TV series “Mash”, is an American comedy icon, and the recipient of two Emmy Awards, the People’s Choice Award, the Genie Award, the Silver Satellite Award, and Chicago’s highest honor, the Sarah Siddons Award. David Engle is a six-time LA Stage Alliance Ovation Award winner, is a multi-talented actor, film director, and stage producer, who divides his

time between the East and West coasts. Mr. Engle has been seen on New York stage and theatres in all the major cities across America. He has boundless energy, impeccable comedy timing, and is a fabulous dancer, as everyone who attends a performance of “Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks” will attest. The charmingly penned comedy by playwright Alfieri and produced by Coyote StageWorks co-founder Chuck Yates, plays to the strengths of Ms. Swit and Mr. Engle. The story is set in Lily Harrison’s condo in St. Petersburg Beach,

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK, -- This Is My Town: Songs of New York is the album Barry Manilow was born to make. A native New Yorker, Barry’s been in love with the rhythms, melodies and music of the Big Apple since childhood. Now, with the release of his new album, out on April 21 on Verve Label Group, he’s “saying thanks to the city for giving me my ambition, my sense of humor and my decency” with a thematic song-cycle celebrating his home town. “I’m grateful for having been raised there because I’ve always felt grounded,” he says. “One of the things I’m most proud of is that having gone through the hurricane of success, I feel I’m still the same guy that took the subway every day to work in Manhattan. And I attribute that grounding to being raised in New York.” More than a year in creation, This Is My Town: Songs of New York premieres ten new Barry Manilow studio recordings with the songs evenly divided between new original Manilow compositions and standards evoking the spirit and energy of New York City. While writing his own songs for the album, Barry made demos of the classic New York-inspired songs he loved to sing.

“I didn’t want to do a full original album,” he says. “It felt like it would be cheating the public to not give them the old songs that they knew. I must have done 50 demos of standards as I was writing the original songs. That’s what took the longest: to choose the standards. And, of course, to write the originals.” The title song, “This Is My Town” sets up the album’s musical journey through New York’s five boroughs. The track was co-written by Barry Manilow “with my brilliant, long-time collaborator, Bruce Sussman. I’m very proud of the production, arrangement, orchestration and melody. And listen to Bruce’s brilliant lyric. Only a New Yorker could have written that lyric.” According to Barry, “the album is like a melting pot – just like New York is. We take you from Brooklyn to Broadway to Birdland. We even wind up in Coney Island. Take a look at the titles and it really does look like you’re going from place to place to place. There are different styles. There’s pop, there’s a little rock and roll, there’s jazz, there’s a little R&B, and Broadway. That’s what I think of when I think of my home town and of New York.” Having sold more than

85 million albums worldwide, Barry Manilow is one of the world’s all-time bestselling recording artists. He’s had an astonishing 50 Top 40 singles including 12 #1s and 27 Top 10 hits and is ranked at the #1 Adult Contemporary Artist of all-time, according to Billboard and R&R magazines. He has been nominated for a Grammy Award in every decade since the 1970s and, in addition to winning the Best Pop Male Vocal Performance Grammy in 1979 (for “Copacabana”), is an Emmy, Tony and American Music Award winner three years in a row. Barry Manilow was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002 and has his own Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1978, five of his albums were on the bestseller charts simultaneously. This Is My Town: Songs of New York is co-produced by Barry Manilow with David Benson. Except for “Coney Island” was co-produced with Michael Lloyd. Florida during the present. Lily lives alone, but claims to her neighbors who inquire about her husband Robert (not seen) that he’s away visiting his grown children or traveling on business. Lily out of sheer boredom decides to engage a dance studio for a series of dance lessons in her home. The play opens with a doorbell ringing and Lily goes to the door and peeks through the peep hole asking “who is it?” Michael pretends it’s a burglar checking to see if anyone is home, then quickly identifies himself as the dance instructor from the agency. Lily is not amused at his glib and flippant manner, and they’re off to a rocky beginning. Michael, is a charming, young gay man, who wins over Lily’s cautious senior citizen character lesson by lesson. With each weekly lesson comes insight and understanding between the two about their problems and secrets, as well as the better times each has experienced in their lives. A genuine affection between Lily and Michael grows over the six weeks, much like a mother and an adult son enjoy. The stage chemistry between Ms. Swit and Mr. Engle is palpable, and it’s a delight to watch two professionals perform their magic while the audience just laps it up. The dance numbers performed by

a trim and vigorous Ms. Swit, is a delight to watch and she looks like she’s really having a good time. Mr. Engle, of course, is a superb dancer and coupled with their timing and their performances, make for a most enjoyable comedy that is sprinkled with many poignant character moments. Ms. Swit mentioned to me after the show that she is having such a good time that she plans to take the production a national tour. That’s reason enough for theatre lovers of a certain age to check out this splendid production. The technical department led by director Raben features a lovely Florida condo setting by Set Designer Josh Clabaugh. Moria Wilkie, again brings her master touch in Lighting, so the costumes of Bonnie Nipar can be fully appreciated. The Sound and Projection designs are by Mr. Engle, with Sound by Scott Rose, and props by producer Mr. Yates. The highly gifted and creative play director Mr. Raben, can be seen (if you look very closely) performing very inventive moves with his stage crew member Diane L. David during the scene changes much to the delight of the audience. “Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks” is a stellar production that performs at the Annenberg Theatre, Palm Springs, through February 12, 2017. Congressman Raul Ruiz and Assemblyman Eduardo Garcia’s representative in attendance. Alan Carvalho, Chairman of the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission, presided at the formal dedication stating from the podium “ As the chairman of the Public Arts Commission, I represent the pride of our city in expressing gratitude and appreciation for the generous gifts bestowed upon us by iconic artist and sculptor, Simi Dabah. Our city and state Officials attended the dedication to show respect and gratitude for Public arts. Thanks to all who attended by motivating us to continue our mission for more diversity in community art.” Sue Townsley remarked that this was a “proud moment” for Cathedral City, recalling a visit by three Public Arts Commissioners to Simi Dabah’s vast outdoor sculpture studio off Highway 62 in Joshua Tree. Five additional sculptures are currently being installed

at other sites such as one next to Cathedral City’s City Hall (it is nicknamed Swiss Cheese) and another nearby on Ave Lalo Guerrero. Another Simi Dabah you can’t miss is “X Marks the Place” on the lawn in front of the Cathedral City Public Library, soaring to nearly 20 feet. Josh Kunckle, librarian says you can’t miss it, nor the entrance to the library!” Mr. Dabah’s sculptures are identified by a number, not a title, such as a 362 lb. Sculpture known as “Sculpt ID 2003 -02-02” recently installed at Ocotillo Park. The Cathedral City Public Arts Commission continues to expand with the opening of their new Cathedral City Art Museum at City Hall curating exhibitions throughout the year.

By Pamela Price The Cathedral City Public Arts Commission dedicated their latest work of art, an original sculpture by Simi Dabah on Feb. 3. The sculpture was installed near the Senior Center at the intersection of Buddy Rogers Avenue and F

La Quinta Arts Festival - Award-winning artists in the desert By Jackie Devereaux La Quinta, CA – Considered the best art shows in the nation three years running, the 35th Annual La Quinta Arts Festival is slated to deliver award-winning artists to the heart of the village March 2-5. Called the Ultimate Fine Art Experience by promoters, and dubbed the most important arts festival in the southwest, artists from around the globe will be showcasing their talents here. One local artist, Diane Morgan says, “I am honored to have been selected to participate in the 2017 La Quinta Arts Festival. The jury process is extremely competitive. It is not easy to get accepted.” Morgan is best known for her oil on canvas painting

entitled, “Morning Glorious” which was displayed in New York City’s Times Square on a 25-story billboard in July 2014. Her painting “Heaven is a ‘57” won first place at the 2009 Indian Wells Arts Festival and was a finalist in the 2009 Aaron Brothers “Show Us Your America” competition. It was also selected by Southwest Art, The Artists Magazine and Watercolor Artist as a feature in their advertising. It was again selected by Starbucks, along with two other pieces, for display in their Palm Springs International Airport location. “Like a kid in a candy store I want to paint everything I see. But what excites me the most is painting large florals. They flow off my brushes effortlessly bringing me great joy. Every day I wake up looking

forward to discovering what will magically materialize on my canvas. Loving what you do truly make life grand.” When Morgan is not painting commissioned pieces at her home, she is giving art classes at Venus Studios located at 44850 Las Palmas Ave., Suite D in Palm Desert. She will hold a two-day oil/ acrylic workshop March 9-10; a two-day watercolor workshop March 13-14. Cost is $235 for the two days, supplies not included. To sign up go to: https://www.venusstudiosllc. com/workshops/. She also offers regular 2.5 hour classes every week for oil, acrylic and watercolor painting for $35, supplies not included. Trump ‘beheads’ Lady Liberty in controversial Der Spiegel magazine cover By Desert Star Staff Der Spiegel editor-inchief defends ‘beheading’ cover, says Germany should ‘stand up against’ Trump The editor-in-chief of German weekly news magazine Der Spiegel has defended a highly controversial cover depicting US President Donald Trump beheading the Statue of Liberty. He also called on Germany “to build an alliance” against the US leader. “Der Spiegel does not want to provoke anybody,” Klaus Brinkbaumer, Der Spiegel editor-in-chief and the executive editor of Der Spiegel Online, told Reuters, adding that the media outlet is actually “defending democracy” in “serious times.”“We want to show what this is about, it’s about democracy, it’s about freedom, it’s about freedom of the press, freedom of justice and all that is seriously endangered,” he said, referring to the cover published on Saturday’s magazine. It featured the distinctive figure of Trump holding the bleeding head of the Statue of Liberty in one hand and a bloodstained knife in the other. “On our cover the American president beheads the symbol which has welcomed migrants and refugees to the United States since 1886, and with democracy and freedom,” Brinkbaumer told the German news agency DPA, implying that the cover was a response to Trump’s executive order temporarily banning travelers and immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim countries, which was

dubbed ‘the Muslim ban.’ Der Spiegel is one of Europe’s largest weekly magazines, and the cover provoked a heated discussion on social media both in Germany and abroad, and drew criticism from other German media outlets and some politicians. ‘Irresponsible’ exaggeration ‘devalues journalism’ Germany’s Die Welt daily sharply criticized the cover, saying that it “damages” and “devalues journalism.” It also stressed that those who decided to depict Trump in such a way, comparing him to Islamist terrorists, had “lost all their moral guidelines.” The daily also accused Der Spiegel of attempts to gain “publicity at any cost” and said that the cover was an “irresponsible exaggeration” that could lead only to the loss of credibility of the German media. However, only 44 percent of Die Welt’s own readers agreed that Der Spiegel’s cover was indeed “exaggerated” while 56 percent said it was “adequate,” according to an online poll conducted by the media outlet. Meanwhile, daily newspaper Bild and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung criticized Der Spiegel for presenting a “distorted image” of Trump and comparing him to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists. Bild in particular noted that the new US leader’s image on the cover resembles that of Mohammed Emwazi, a British national known as ‘Jihadi John’ who was seen in several videos showing the beheading

of Islamic State hostages. Both media outlets stressed that Der Spiegel’s cover could underpin Trump supporters’ belief that the media is biased against him and “belong to the establishment, which he is allegedly up against.” “The Spiegel cover is just what Trump needs – a distorted image of him which he can use to further his own distorted image of the press,” Bild said. At the same time, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, a member of Germany’s Free Democratic Party (FDP) and vice president of the European Parliament, denounced the cover as “tasteless.” He also told Bild that it “plays disgustingly with the lives of the terrorists’ victims,” adding that “it says more about Der Spiegel’s editorial staff than about Trump.” Meanwhile, populist anti-

immigrant party Alternative for Germany (AfD) mocked Der Spiegel’s cover by presenting its own version of the cartoon, featuring the figure of Chancellor Angela Merkel holding a burning German constitution in one hand and a bloodstained knife with a Muslim crescent symbol on it in the other. The picture also features Merkel’s well-known slogan, “We can make it!”Brinkbaumer did not comment on the extent to which the cover was intended to resemble beheadings by Islamic State. However, the cartoon’s author, US-Cuban artist Edel Rodriguez, told the Washington Post that he had set out to compare Trump with IS terrorists.“It’s a beheading of democracy, a beheading of a sacred symbol,” Rodriguez said, explaining the idea behind the cover. “Both sides are extremists, so I’m just making a comparison

Five Morning Tips to Prepare for the Day

By Desert Star Staff Are most of your mornings spent running out the door with breakfast in-hand, and applying your makeup onthe-go? It’s easy to snooze, and rush all the way to work – but building a routine that gives you a calm and efficient morning can make you feel more prepared to take www.desertstarweekly.com

on your day. If you haven’t nailed it yet, don’t fret. To celebrate the similarities and differences of women’s routines, the team at Carefree is offering some tips to make mornings easier. 1. Rise and shine. Do you hit the snooze button one too many times? Avoid being late again. Place your

alarm out of reach so that in order to turn it off, you have to get out of bed. If you use your phone to wake up, consider setting your alarm tone to a song that annoys you -- you’ll be happy to get out of bed to make it stop! You may not have time for a full workout in the morning, but moving a bit February 8, 2017

upon getting out of bed can get the blood flowing, help wake you up and give you a metabolism boost. Start the day with a few stretches and body weight exercises, such as lunges and planks. 2. Perk up. Perk up with a morning ritual that activates your mind. Enjoy your cup of coffee or green tea alongside a brain teaser, Sodoku or crossword puzzle. Or spend the time writing a journal entry, scanning the morning headlines, or reading a chapter of a book. Taking a few moments to warm up the mind can encourage greater productivity all day long. 3. Eliminate bed head. You can shave substantial minutes off your morning routine by doing your hair the night before. After washing and conditioning your locks, leave hair up in buns or clips while sleeping. In the morning, undo the up-do and use a little spray before heading out the door. 4. Makeup magic. When there’s no time for a full

between them,” he added. Germany should ‘stand up’ against ‘Nero’ Trump – Spiegel editor-in-chief In the meantime, Brinkbaumer openly called on Germany to take on a leadership role in an international “alliance” against Trump in his editorial published by the magazine on Saturday. In the piece, Brinkbaumer claimed that Trump “is becoming a danger to the world” and urged the German leadership to “stand up in opposition to the 45th president of the United States and his government.” He went on to say that “Germany must build an alliance against Donald Trump,” as a political struggle against him can only be successful “when mounted together with Asian and African partners” and “partners in Europe.”

•••••••••••••• morning makeover, stick to the basics. Start with a moisturizer with SPF so you can protect your skin and keep it hydrated. Use under eye concealer to easily eliminate any signs of fatigue. If you do need to abbreviate the full eye makeup routine, don’t omit a quick coat of mascara, which can help you look wider-eyed and more awake with a few seconds of effort. Lastly, give lips shine and protect them from chapping with a lip balm that preferably contains SPF. 5. Be Free to Be You. Feminine care is one routine element that links all women. It’s a part of life, and as we all know – it’s not always predictable. “Liner Up!” every morning with Carefree ActiFresh liners, which are soft, thin and absorbent enough to go unnoticed, helping you feel confident as you go throughout your day. It is easy to incorporate them into your daily regimen by storing them in your underwear drawer—you will never forget to give yourself a layer of protection again. StatePoint

MUSIC Welcome returns highlighted on new releases BY ROBERT KINSLER

Two legendary rock bands are back with solid new titles, while pioneering 1960s artist Buzz Cason and Austin singer-songwriter Lawrence Morrill Glass have new albums worth discovering too.

Artist: Def Leppard Title: And There Will Be A Next Time...Live From Detroit (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: Def Leppard, Queen Tell me more: On arena rockers Def Leppard’s new live concert recording “And There Will Be A Next Time... Live From Detroit,” the rock quintet is captured performing with the fire and firepower of their youth. Beyond the group’s 40-year history is the parade of memorable rock hits, all of which are featured on the concert film and companion

audio CDs; “Foolin’,” Armageddon It,” “Rocket,” “Bringin’ On The Heartbreak,” “Pour Some Sugar On Me,” “Rock of Ages” and “Photograph” are performed with powerful perfection by the band. In addition to rousing versions of the British band’s many classics, the group performs fiery new material including uptempo riff rockstyled opener “Let’s Go” and the melodic “Dangerous.” “And There Will Be A Next Time...Live From Detroit” is available on DVD+2CD, Bluray+2CD and via digital video. Information: eagle-rock.com. Artist: Train Title: a girl a bottle a boat (Columbia) You might like if you enjoy: Maroon 5, OneRepublic, Gavin DeGraw Tell me more: Train’s 10th

studio album “a girl a bottle a boat” delivers a dance and pop-minded emphasis on the mix of infectious songwriting and energetic studio craft that has been a hallmark of the San Francisco-based band since the release of their 1998 selftitled debut. Train’s new album features 11 solid mostly-upbeat tunes, including the catchy opener “Drink Up,” similarly infectious “Play That Song” and winsome ballad “You Better Believe.” Information: SaveMeSanFrancisco.com. Artist: Buzz Cason Title: Passion (ArenA Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Lee Rocker, Michael Ubaldini, Robert Gordon Tell me more: Legendary singer-songwriter Buzz Cason is back. Best known as the writer of “Everlasting Love”

(recorded by a number of artists including U2) and “Soldier of Love” (covered by the Beatles), the 77-year-old singer-songwriter-guitarist is back with a fantastic new album, aptly titled “Passion.” Cason has absorbed a myriad of influences and experiences that give life to the songs on the disc, with the uplifting title track, the blues rocker “Bread” (an especially lively song thanks to a propulsive beat and blasts of harmonica), power pop-meets-garage rock foray “Walkin’,” and playful “Just As Gone” among the many winners here. The disc’s final song “We Soldiered On” offers a fitting reflection on youth and following dreams; the song is powerful and free of cliche. Information: buzzcason.com. Artist: Lawrence Morrill Glass

Title: Neanderthal (independent) You might like if you enjoy: Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen Tell me more: There is an honesty and real world slant that enhances each of the 11 songs on Lawrence Morrill Glass’ latest album “Neanderthal,” yet another masterwork out of the burgeoning Austin, Texas original music scene. It is amazing to hear how different each of these songs sound from each other, yet how well Glass’ voice and literate talents weave together the works into a coherent whole. The wry “Tina Fey,” melancholydrenched “No Christmas This Year,” “reggae-styled “It Wasn’t Love” and traditional country ballad “Believe” cast their spell quickly, and that’s a good thing. Health: An Important Matter of the Heart

During American Heart Month, Iowans are encouraged to learn more about heart disease and make a commitment to a healthy lifestyle.

By Desert Star Staff DES MOINES, Iowa – While February is a month dedicated to love, it’s also a time to focus on other matters of the heart. It is American Heart Month, when Iowans are encouraged to learn more about heart disease and make a commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Kassi Wessing, communications director for the American Heart Association in Iowa, says as the number one killer, cardiovascular disease is to blame for one in four deaths nationally. But she explains nearly 80 percent of cardiac events are preventable. “There’s not a lot we can do about genetics, but there are those risk factors that we can take control of, such as getting physically active and making sure we’re eating a healthy diet, making sure we’re talking to our doctor,

knowing our numbers – like blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose,” she explained. Wessing adds quitting smoking is another important prevention measure. February 3rd is Wear Red Day. Iowans are asked to don red to help raise awareness of heart disease and stroke among women. In Iowa, nearly 10,000 people lose their lives to heart disease every year, including one in three women. Wessing explains it’s never too early to start learning about heart health, and she says healthy habits should be passed along to the next generation. “For the most part, every single person is born in ideal cardiovascular health, and the goal is to keep it that way,” she said. “So, as we grow up and we start with our young kids, we certainly want to be introducing those

fruits and vegetables to them, be introducing that active lifestyle to them. Those are things that we want to instill at a young age.” She says another important aspect of heart health is

knowing the warning signs of a heart attack or stroke. Heart attack symptoms might include pressure, fullness or pain in the center of the chest; pain or discomfort in the arms, back, or head;

shortness of breath; and chills, nausea or light-headedness. The signs of a stroke include face drooping, arm weakness or speech difficulty. In either situation, Wessing says it is critical to call 911.

By Desert Star Staff Losing weight and living a healthier lifestyle top millions of people’s list of goals. Unfortunately, it’s a lot easier to set a goal than it is to actually achieve it, so it’s important to have a game plan if you want to see results. Here are some sustainable tips to help you lose weight and feel great! Set Goals Mindfully: Setting a goal to “lose weight” sounds great, but it is pretty vague. It’s hard to achieve a goal without a specific plan or focus. Remember to think about your health beyond just the number on the scale. Whether it’s deciding to train for a 5k race or choosing to reduce your sugar intake by half, getting specific and setting realistic goals helps you get a clear sense as to whether you were successful. Get Hydrated: One simple way to cut back calories and sugar is to make water your drink of choice. Eliminate high-calorie beverages like juice and soda from your diet. Get started by setting a simple goal of drinking

at least five 12-ounce glasses of water a day. Sustainable Meal Planning: A sustainable diet is not about deprivation, it’s about eating nutritious, enjoyable meals. For example, a Mediterranean diet, which focuses on fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and healthy fats like olive oil; often offers better nutrition, better flavors and better results than a fad diet. In fact, people who followed a Mediterranean diet lost 52 percent more weight than those with a standard low-fat diet says a study published in a peer reviewed journal. Over a period of two years, the Mediterranean diet group lost 9.7 pounds while the low fat diet group only lost 6.3 pounds. Make Exercise Fun: Exercise is critical for a healthy body and mind. Whether it’s taking the dog out for a daily walk, signing up for a dance class or committing to hitting the gym three to four times a week, find a workout routine you love and can commit to so you don’t think of movement and exercise as a chore.

Seek Support: Even a well-balanced diet combined with exercise can use extra support. One great program that works in conjunction with a Mediterranean diet is the M3 system by Modere, an innovative weight management system combining credible products with real food and flexible lifestyle behaviors to help users detox. The plan includes a thermogenic fat-burning supplement taken in the morning, a protein-rich shake

Great Tips to Get in Shape and Stay in Shape

5 Top Tips for Heart Health Month ??????

By Desert Star Staff Heart disease and stroke cause one in three deaths among women each year, killing approximately one woman every 80 seconds. While there are many risk factors involved that are beyond one’s control, a healthy lifestyle can

make a big difference. February is American Heart Month and a great opportunity to adopt healthy habits that can reduce your risk for illness. Here are five to consider. • Move about: Exercise doesn’t have to be daunting! Aim for 10-minute sessions, three times daily. Movement

sets your metabolism in motion, so make sure it’s a consistent part of your life. • Get sleep: Sleeping fewer than seven hours a night can make you gain weight and have more trouble taking it off, according to Columbia University research. Another study found that people who

get enough sleep have a five percent higher metabolism than people who don’t. That means more calories burned while you’re sleeping! Doesn’t get much easier than that. • Eat small and well: “Studies have found that losing five to 10 percent of your body weight can lower the risk of a heart attack,” says Dawn Zier, CEO of Nutrisystem and the 2017 Go Red for Women Campaign Chair in Philadelphia, a movement to help end heart disease and stroke in women. Research suggests that eating smaller, balanced meals throughout the day promotes greater weight loss and maintenance, and can also be good for your heart. Schedule meals every two to three hours, six times a day. Programs designed to help you eat healthy portions can mean seeing quick results. For example, Nutrisystem Lean13 is a new program designed to help you lose up to 13 pounds and seven inches in the first

month. For more information visit nutrisystem.com. • Rise, shine, drink water. You’ll burn more calories all day: A German study found that drinking 48 ounces (about six cups) of cold water increased calorie burn at rest by up to 50 calories per day. This alone could melt a pound in a little more than two months. And drinking it before meals could give you an added bonus, as a Virginia Tech study found that dieters who drank two, eight-ounce glasses of water before meals for 12 weeks lost 36 percent more weight than those who didn’t down the water. • Put your phone away: Checking your email in the morning will just stress you out. Many productivity experts recommend waiting at least an hour once you get to work before checking your inbox, so you can tackle your most important priorities calmly without getting distracted. This American Heart Month, take steps to improve your health and reduce your risk for serious illness. StatePoint

By Desert Star Staff It was ‘election night all over again’ for many as the New England Patriots fought back to clinch Super Bowl victory from the Atlanta Falcons in what has been described as the most dramatic comeback in the sport’s history.‘Not again’ was the cry from the Twitteratti as comparisons were quickly drawn with the fateful night of November 8, 2016 when Donald Trump

shocked MSM commentators by defeating reported frontrunner Hillary Clinton. Similar to Clinton on election night, the path seemed clear for the Falcons to claim glory. On the cusp of their first championship victory, Atlanta held an incredible lead of 28-3 at one point in the game. ‘Expert’ predictions gave them a 99 percent chance of winning. When the Patriots tied 28-28 in the final nail-

biting minutes of play and took victory in overtime, social media users immediately harked back to Trump’s historic win.Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr was quick to point out the undeniable similarities between the game’s turnaround and how the presidential election results had defied pollsters’ predictions. The MSM, which predicted that Clinton would sail to victory, was blasted for pushing in-game stats which gave the Patriots little

or no chance of a comeback. It’s likely the striking parallels weren’t lost on the former election candidates either as each revealed their plans to watch the Super Bowl on Twitter:Trump later described the Patriots’ win as ‘an amazing comeback’ while his son anticipated a flurry of memes, comparing the president with the NFL quarterback who led the New England outfit to victory, Tom Brady.

Over 4,000 children alleged victims of Catholic Church sex abuse

By Desert Star Staff More than 4,000 children, mostly boys, were allegedly sexually abused by Catholic priests in Australia over decades, an investigation says, adding that since the 1950s some 7 percent of priests in the country were alleged perpetrators. The report was released on Monday by the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. The commission will resume its public hearing into the current policies of the Catholic Church on Tuesday. The investigation analyzed all types of claims of sexual abuse, including against former priests, “religious brothers or sisters, or any other person employed in or appointed to a voluntary position by a Catholic Church authority.” “Between January 1980 and February 2015, 4,444 people alleged incidents of child sexual abuse made to 93 Catholic Church authorities. These claims related to over 1,000 separate institutions,” the report says. The commission was established back in 2013 to investigate instances and allegations of child sexual abuse in Australia. The majority of victims were male (78 percent) and 22 percent were female, according to the report. The average age of the

claimants at the time of the alleged abuse was 10 and a half for girls and 11.6 years old for boys. The average time between the actual abuse and the claim was some 33 years, it was reported. The commission managed to identify 1,880 alleged perpetrators, who included 597 (32 percent) ‘religious brothers,’ 572 (30 percent) priests, 543 (29 percent) lay people and 96 (5 percent) ‘religious sisters.’ At least 90 percent of the alleged perpetrators were male, the report says. The Royal Commission said that it “has made 309 referrals to police in all states and the Australian Capital Territory in relation to allegations of child sexual abuse involving Catholic Church institutions.” “As a result of those referrals there have been 27 prosecutions. Seventy-five matters are currently being investigated. The victim or the accused has died in 37 cases and 66 matters are pending.”The commission said it also surveyed 75 Catholic Church authorities with priest members, including archdioceses, dioceses and religious orders, “about the number of their members who ministered in Australia between 1 January 1950 and 31 December 2010.” “[Between 1950 and 2010] 7.9 percent of diocesan priests were

Overall, 7 percent of priests were alleged perpetrators,” the report states. The recent data shows “a massive failure” by the Catholic Church to protect children, Francis Sullivan, CEO of the Truth Justice and Healing Council, which is coordinating the Catholic Church’s response to the inquiry, said. “These numbers are shocking, they are tragic and they are indefensible,” Sullivan told the commission. “As Catholics, we hang February 8, 2017

our heads in shame.” Sexual abuse scandals have long dogged the Catholic Church. In 2014, the Vatican said 3,420 credible accusations of sexual abuse committed by priests had been referred to it over the past 10 years, and that 824 clerics had been defrocked. In January Pope Francis called for “zero tolerance” towards sex crimes against children and condemned it as “a sin that shames” both the perpetrators of such offenses among the clergy as well as those who cover up such atrocities.

Compelling drama from new playwright at Desert Theatre Ensemble

By Jack Lyons, Theatre and Movie Critic Playwrights promoting playwrights is not that unusual in the Coachella Valley. In business and creative endeavors, however, creators jealously guard their creations from industrial theft, art forgery, copyright plagiarism, and from screenwriters who recognize a good idea when they see one. Desert Ensemble Theatre founder and playwright Tony Padilla, is a playwright, who not only encourages other writers, he gives them a venue to display their wares, so to speak. An example of a new and emerging playwright in Palm Springs, is local actor/director Shawn Abramowitz. He has been seen as a working actor throughout the valley, and has been singled out for Desert Theatre League honors for Best Actor and Best Supporting actor in “A Number” in 2016, and for “Family Meetings” in 2014, respectively. “Expressions”, marks Abramowitz’s debut as a playwright, who also directs the powerful drama now performing on the Pearl Mc Manus Stage at the Palm Springs Woman’s Club. “Expression”, is a compelling story of two brothers and their respective father-son relationships; set in the year 2002. Karl (Fergus Loughnane), is a troubled Viet Nam veteran who has never fully recovered from the trauma of his war experiences. Certain images and loud sounds haunt him turning his home life with his wife Emily (Kelley Moody) and his 18 year-old

son Joseph (Nick Wass) into becoming at times, a distant husband and a misunderstood father who can’t quite bring himself get close to his son Joseph, which troubles Emily. Karl’s older brother Steven (James E. Anderson III) every now and then drops by for occasional visits, along with his 17 year-old son Paul (Cameron Keys). The two brothers have a prickly relationship. Steven is surly and has a drinking problem. He too was in ‘Nam’, and is also dysfunctional. But the “warrior mentality” keep both men from fully expressing their feelings and their fears. We now know in 2017, that both men are suffering from PTSD. The two young cousins, however, are great friends and both share the desire to join the army like their dads. However, neither young man has broached the subject with his father. Joseph knows that Karl and Emily want him to go to college. Steven feels that Joseph should make his own decisions about whether to enter the military, but he feels that his son Paul is definitely too young to join the army. This sets up a dynamic where the brothers keep growing more distant. No more spoiler alerts here. The appeal of the play lies in the situations the characters find themselves in and the performances of the actors. There are moments of true poignancy in Act Two that are emotionally deep and resonate with the audience. Powerful plays like “Expressions” need the steady hand of the director to orchestrate and modulate the performances. The night I attended, the pacing was a tad slow. Yes, I know it’s a drama,

NEED A LEGAL NOTICE?

but it is also a theatrical piece, that requires the audience to remain engaged. I’m not suggesting that playwright Abramowitz throw “his baby” out with bath water, but life is full of choices. And as talented a playwright/actor/ director as Abramowitz is, I’m confident he’ll make the right choices. He has a fine ear for dialogue, and as I said, his play is powerful and compelling. I

“Expressions”, performs Fridays, Saturdays at 7 PM and Sunday Matinees at 2 PM on the Pearl Mc Manus stage at the Palm Spring’s Woman’s Club through February 12, 2017.
