Town Hall with the Huckabee’s

Mike Huckabee and Sarah Huckabee Sanders at Desert Town Hall Stories and Photos by Pat Krause The H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation presented its 30th anniversary of Youth Townhall and Desert Town Hall on February 1st. The President of the Board, Keith Goff, said the series was glad to be back after losing the 2021 series to the Covid epidemic. Executive

Director Becky Kurtz introduced this year’s first speakers, MIKE HUCKABEE, and his daughter SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS. The event was held at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa. These two very famous speakers took to the stage, asking what the program would

By Andrew Mills, Palm Springs Police Chief Archbishop Desmond Tutu said, “There comes a point when we have to just stop pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they are falling in.” The police spend their day pulling people out of rivers, infrequently going upstream to stop them from falling into the swift waters. Palm Springs police intend to prevent those on the bank from falling in the river by implementing Neighborhood Policing and problem-solving. A defined mission and established crime-fighting

priorities are crucial to an effective Neighborhood Policing program. Each day when our officers go into the field, they need a clearly defined focus. Without a central focus, their day becomes random, call-driven, and tedious. Unfortunately, for too many police agencies, the radio sets the strategy. Plucking people from the river is the default strategy. Often, we are too busy saving people in the river to give serious thought to reducing crime upstream. Through practical knowledge and academic

He compared 1960 politics to today. Then it was people trying to destroy our democracy. Today it is at a crossroads, and it’s we, the

people, who must stand up to stop and save our country. America is an excellent place to live, and we must decide how to keep it that way. They both said it was essential to teach our children to love our country and know that America is good. Mike was Governor of Arkansas and ran for President

How to Tap Into the Benefits of Using Pen and Paper more thoughtful and heartfelt than cards with printed notes. Even more respondents (92%) shared that they have saved handwritten cards or letters from a loved one as a cherished keepsake. When asked what emotions they felt when receiving a handwritten card, respondents reported they felt “appreciated,” “touched,” “cared for,” and “recognized.” We could all use a bit more of these feelings. So this month, consider taking a few minutes to send a handwritten note to a loved one or friend.

By Desert Star Staff February is International Correspondence Writing Month (InCoWriMo) -- a challenge to handwrite a piece of correspondence each day of the month -meaning there’s no better time to tap into the power of the handwritten word. “With our many digital forms of communication, we have gained immediacy but lost intimacy,” says Ariann Langsam, vice president of marketing for Pilot Pen, whose background is in biology and neuroscience. “But

handwriting is scientifically proven to solidify both cognitive connections needed for learning and comprehension, as well as emotional connections between individuals. We can make a powerful impact on the lives of others by connecting through the written word, and there are neurological and social benefits that keep writing by hand relevant not only during International Correspondence Writing Month but all year long.” It’s Good for the Soul:

In an era when digital devices and social media seem to dominate how we connect with loved ones, the art of letter writing has become rare. But sitting down to write correspondence by hand can be a much more personal way to connect than modern modes of communication. A recent study conducted by Pilot Corporation of America reinforced the emotional and social benefits of putting pen to paper. A remarkable nine out of 10 respondents perceived cards with handwritten messages as

LSU CEE Professor Bivins Studying Wastewater on International Flights By Desert Star Staff Testing has never been more critical with the COVID-19 Omicron variant spreading like wildfire. This is why LSU Civil & Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Aaron Bivins is researching pathogen detection in water at LSU and joining forces with researchers worldwide, namely Australia, to study wastewater on international flights. Before joining LSU earlier this year, Bivins researched waterborne pathogen detection in surface and drinking water and planned to study antibiotic resistance in the environment at the University of Notre Dame. Then the pandemic hit in early 2020, which prompted Bivins to co-found the COVID-19 Wastewater-based Epidemiology Collaborative, a group that now has 1,200 members around the globe. “I just tried to get people together to share methods and approaches because at first, everyone was trying to figure out how we were going to measure this virus in wastewater,” Bivins said. “That’s how I met my

collaborators in Australia.” In 2020, many cruise ships worldwide were forced to dock because of passengers being sick with COVID-19. When one ship docked in Australia, Bivins suggested that his Australian collaborators collect wastewater. They then realized that they could also test wastewater on planes. “In our first paper, we collected wastewater samples from three different flights into Australia and from a cruise ship,” Bivins said. “We were able to detect the virus RNA in the samples.” In a second paper, Bivins and his colleagues were able to link wastewater samples with the future development of COVID-19 among passengers during quarantine. Bivins noted, “The plane passengers had all been tested before boarding, and all of them (1,600 total) all tested negative, so they were allowed to fly home to Australia. However, during the two-week quarantine period required by Australia for returning citizens, 112 developed COVID.” What Bivins and his collaborators found was that the wastewater they had

collected from the flights was about 85% accurate in predicting those future COVID cases. Of the 112 passengers who contracted COVID, 105 were associated with the positive wastewater samples collected. That left only seven cases corresponding with negative samples. “There’s the impression that the clinical testing is perfect, and it’s not necessarily,” he said. “You could imagine a system where people test negative, board an international flight, come to the U.S., and go about their business because there is no mandatory quarantine period after a flight.” Bivins proposes testing the aircraft wastewater as it’s being pumped out while the passengers exit the plane, and ideally, have a testing lab at the airport. One wastewater team in San Diego, led by a former colleague of Bivins, said that when it tested wastewater in schools and publicly posted that information, the number of parents having their children tested jumped from 30% to 85%. “As long as there have February 9, 2022

Professor Aaron Bivins been human beings, there have been pathogens,” he said. “I think the idea would be that we can use wastewater to make better public health decisions.”

research, we know that some methods of crime control are more effective than others. At the Palm Springs Police Department, we seek to deploy the best evidence-based practices possible to reduce, manage and control crime. At the end of the day, Palm Springs should expect its police force to be effective crime fighters. To establish a police mission in step with the culture of Palm Springs, the Palm Springs Police Department invites our residents and businesses to help shape the department’s future through a series of public meetings, February 15-19. Meetings will be held in each of the five City Council districts and Council members will be present. The sessions will take place in a structured town hall environment where everyone will have equal input. Community input will help to establish our mission and chart our path forward. The second part of the meeting is to establish our crime-fighting priorities by city area. Our job is to analyze problems and go after the underlying conditions allowing the issues to flourish. Police agencies have learned that to focus on everything simultaneously is to focus on nothing at all— mission

dilution results in ineffective crime control. Instead, a laserfocused effort on specific problems can result in reduced crime and increased public safety. Increased public safety is our goal. The series of meetings with our elected officials will be held on the following dates: February 15 from 4:00 to 5:00 pm, Victoria Park, 2744 N. Via Miraleste February 16 from 4:00 to 5:00 pm, Convention Center, 277 N. Avenida Caballeros February 17 from 4:00 to 5:00 pm, Cahuilla Elementary School, 833 E. Mesquite Ave. February 18 from 4:00 to 5:00 pm, Palm Springs High School, 2401 E. Baristo Road February 19 from 4:00 to 5:00 pm, Demuth Park, 4200 E. Mesquite Ave. Our crime analyst will provide you with crime maps, data on crime trends, and calls for service. If you can’t make the meeting in your Council district, you are encouraged to attend another session on a date that works for you. The City of Palm Springs prides itself on being one of the most welcoming and inclusive communities in the nation – and with that in mind, I am confident these important neighborhood meetings will help us unite and find a path February 9, 2022

HOROSCOPES ARIES

All the ties that bind you to others become activated. You discover which are vital and real and which are not. You seek a harmonious integration with everyone, a change for you. You will eventually integrate those you have rejected. Without this integration you will feel out of harmony. This integration is a good challenge for you. Accepting it would be like a miracle, shiny, beautiful and bright. Like you like it.

TAURUS You have sensed for years that a new phase of life is gradually coming into the world. Bringing forth a cleansing, healing and a fixing of what has been broken. This cleansing has just begun. You always show people a deeper perspective. You know our true history and know we need to cooperate in order to form the new Aquarian communities. You know we have to give something up so a greater intimacy can develop. You understand all of this and all the mysteries of the stars.

GEMINI Saturn is the teacher for the Earth and Saturn is especially your teacher these days of transition. Helping you bring forth new concepts and philosophies, research into and understanding various religious ideas, all to be used creatively in your work. You are to expand limited small minds into large spacious minds. So they can know the truth of the kingdom (Earth) and all of its geometric beauty. You are to use your

loving and intelligent mind to serve and educate others.

CANCER Amidst all your nourishing and nurturing others, you might recognize that you also contain much of the Capricorn ways of being - hard work and responsibilities, ambition, achievement and success. Let’s talk about foundations here. Everyone needs a firm foundation. Love is that foundation. At the heart of your nourishing and nurturing, place love there. Sometimes Cancers hide under their shell trying not to be seen. But we know you’re there. Hiding for protection, which is sensible at times.

LEO All Leos will become even more aware of themselves, which may be hard to believe. But, as the Aquarian era unfolds, Leos must assess and further cultivate their gifts, talents, abilities, and refine thoughts, actions and communications. Impatience is not a choice. Learn to adapt. Everything is a lesson. This is an important time of learning and many feel restrained. Later you will see new opportunities, possibilities and perspectives unfolding along with a new level of strength, inspiration and confidence. In the meantime, be kind, learn to share, and come from the heart, always.

VIRGO Old identities, events, people, previous beliefs and ways of being now have a level of understanding. Swift

moving clouds clean and clear everything previously hindering you away. Should sadness occur, take the homeopath Ignatia Amara. It helps to calm and soothe sadness and heals grief embedded in the body’s cells. Rock Rose, the Bach Flower Remedy is also useful. New values begin to emerge as the old drifts away. You are a vital part of organizing all that will come to pass.

LIBRA Creativity, love affairs, romance, fun, games, playing with money and art, and things that call for risk taking are on your mind. All creative self-expressions are being projected into the world. You love to be seen. When in need you easily ask for help. Emotional comfort comes from a new creative effort. Thoughts are of children, perhaps a new baby, a pet, a bird (tweet tweet). All your gifts and talents have a definite link to your childhood and your past. You realize this with gratitude.

SCORPIO You think about all aspects of home – living in a home, changing it, maybe moving. Perhaps you seek (need) a long vacation, exploring how to create a home elsewhere. For a time redecorating, reconstruction or remodeling will be needed. You wonder what a true home means. You will seek deeper foundations and a greater balance between home and work. One’s biology, genealogy, early family life and childhood memories become companions. Nurture yourself and others more.

SAGITTARIUS Always in search of new knowledge, seeking new roads and highways, usually the professor, over time developing mental telepathy, unfolding deep intelligence, entering a new study, you assess the state of the world and ask how Lady Justice remains blinded. You always assess what’s truth and untruth. Is it real or unreal? Your life is a Rainbow Bridge, a pilgrimage of deep thought. You will need to create a new level of education for humanity. The old has disappeared.

CAPRICORN As you give and give, you realize you would like to be given to. You are secure within your own self, your strong armor, sturdy shoes, that ladder you climb, your ambition and success – all protect you. New values have arisen, new code of ethics, new responsibilities, new tasks. You contemplate right and wrong, good and bad. You always stand with tradition and the law. You are respected as a spiritual resource with strong morals and values. Your life is shaped by these qualities. You remember someone.

and sensitivities more freely. As everything in our world changes to meet the new era, all Aquarians are changing, too. The Soul quietly begins to speak with you about the purpose and plan for the life of every Aquarian. Be still each day and listen for direction. Then find a garden of peacocks.

PISCES You are able to turn inward, employ empathy and compassion and deep listening when needed. Others may come to you, attracted to your silence, asking for help. Always remain in a state of poise, kindness and goodwill. Allow nothing to hinder the still small voice of the intuition and the Soul attempting to communicate with you. Tend to your health with the greatest care. Stand in the morning and evening sunlight. Talk with the devas. “Ashley Lopez Quinceanera” By Desert Star Staff Traditionally, a quinceanera celebration starts with a church mass and ends with a reception. First, the celebrant is accompanied by a “court” of damas and presents a stuffed doll to her younger sister. Then, she presents a pair of high-heeled shoes to her father, who dances with her. The Quinceanera celebration is a day of celebration and giving gifts. It is a time to celebrate the arrival of adulthood and the end of childhood. The celebration is often celebrated with a party that includes religious and cultural classes. The dress code for quinceaneras differs from country to country. Girls wear dresses and earrings. In some countries, high heels are the traditional choice for the party dress. The cake is one of the most essential elements of the party. The traditional cake is an almond meringue cake that

is spongy and has layers of sugar. Desserts may include tres leches, a combination of three different kinds of milk, and a rose. The girl can choose the food herself for the cake or have it catered. While the celebration is a big event, the costs can be pretty high. It is common for affluent families to throw large, elaborate parties. However, quinceaneras are not uncommon to be lowkey, incredibly when the family’s resources are limited. Fortunately, quinceaneras are usually covered by the girl’s parents. But, if the family cannot afford it, the family can help by donating funds or organizing a fundraising event. The quinceanera is an important day in a girl’s life. The celebration is traditionally held at a Catholic church. The main purpose of a quinceanera is to give thanks and celebrate life. During the mass, a procession is performed, similar to a

wedding. The birthday girl’s parents, godparents, and 14 maids may participate. The celebration begins with a ceremony meant to mark the teenage girl’s coming of age. First, the father of the quinceanera’s ancestors changes his shoes from flats to heels. Next, the young woman’s parents and friends perform the first dance, sometimes with her boyfriend. Then, they get to dance with the girls’ godparents. The quinceanera is a religious celebration. The Catholics celebrate the day in a church. The party typically involves a mass. The quinceanera will arrive with her parents and godparents. She will be accompanied by her parents, her godparents, and her court of honor. A dance will follow the ceremony. In some cultures, the court of honor will present the quinceanera with a rosary.

Legendary comedian Carol Burnett at Agua Caliente Resort Casino Story by Pat Krause The SHOW at the Agua Caliente Resort Casino brought the legendary Carol Burnett to its stage. Carol Burnett has brought laughter to millions of people over her long career. When she stepped on stage, the SHOW erupted with clapping and yelling. Her many fans have been with her thru most of her career. Her one performance had to be made into two as the first of her shows was sold out fast. Carol agreed to do another show so her loyal fans could attend her concert. The show was mostly a question-and-answer one. She started the show with a few clips

from her TV show which brought a lot of laughter. Then, Carol chose people from the audience for questions. Many questions were about her shows and who was in it with her. Some were about who she enjoyed working with the most, which she replied there were so many it would be hard to choose just one. One of the questions was about an actor who appeared a lot on Harvey Korman’s show. Clips of her with Harvey Korman came after. One of the most famous shows was the Dentist Scene, where a long-time friend, Tim Conway, kept injecting himself with novocaine while Harvey Korman had to hide

his laughs. The audience again laughed out loud. She said she never knew what Tim Conway would come up with next. She was asked about some favorite types of shows. She loved the shows about movies. Bob Mackie would make dresses from films like Gone With the Wind Scarlet O’Hara’s dress of Drapes. She said Mackie would make upwards of 60 costumes a week. Each movie clip with her costumes would bring more laughter from the crowd. She told about her long-time friendship with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Lucy died

on her birthday, and she got her yearly birthday flowers from Lucy that afternoon, sad. Some of the videos showed her with so many different movie stars she said she was blessed to work with. Other videos showed her with the many singers in her show that she was lucky enough to sing with. She has a beautiful voice. So many of the questions were more a thank you for her years of making them laugh and getting them thru hard times. A few told of working with her years before. She spoke about her extraordinary friendship with Vicky Lawrence,

who was a few years younger and ended up playing her mother. This was a night of laughter. Carol has received many awards like Emmys and big ones like the Horatio Alger, Ace and the Peabody. The SHOW brings a lot of talented people to their stage. Watch for all the new shows and concerts coming up soon. February brings so much talent. Air Supply on Feb. 12, Beach Boys on the 18th, ZZ Top on the 25th and Music of Abba on the 26th. March brings many more well-known singers and acts.

If not us, who? If not now, when? Every two seconds, someone needs blood. There’s a constant shortage, and our shelves are often empty. Whether it’s for illness, accidents or tragedy, we can’t help save lives without you. MAKE A DONATION. MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

The two have to be reconciled and passed again in both chambers before the final version can go to President Joe Biden’s desk.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 916-939-0772 or visit this internet website www.nationwideposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case 131634-5. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. IF THE SUBJECT PROPERTY CONTAINS FROM ONE TO FOUR SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENCES, THE FOLLOWING WILL APPLY: NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid, by remitting the funds and affidavit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code, so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPOSTING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 098120-CA. Cannabis workers ratify a historic statewide agreement

By Desert Star Staff BLOOMINGTON, CALIF.— Newly organized cannabis workers at STIIIZY and Authentic retail locations throughout California ratified their first contract as UFCW members last week. More than 1,200 members of UFCW locals across the state had the opportunity to vote on the statewide contract, which was ratified by an overwhelming margin. Union negotiators reached an agreement with STIIIZY and Authentic management on Dec. 30. It also covers workers at Flight dispensaries in Northern California. For more than a decade, the UFCW has been proud to

help develop and stabilize the emerging cannabis industry. “We are invested in helping create a high standard for cannabis workers,” UFCW Local 1167 President Joe Duffle said. “This agreement is historic for the number of workers it covers at one of the most well-known companies in the industry. It’s also the first agreement that benefits workers throughout California immediately.” Previous California cannabis contracts were negotiated regionally or locally. The new agreement will cover cannabis members of UFCW Locals 5, 135, 324, 770, 1167 and 1428. The contract’s highlights include competitive, standardized wages with annual

The UFCW represents tens of thousands of cannabis workers across the United States in dispensaries, labs, delivery services, kitchens, manufacturing facilities, processing plants, grow facilities and more, helping workers secure better wages, protection from unfair discipline, and other great benefits of a union contract. “This union contract will bring us financial stability and security,” STIIIZY employee

Lydia Ibarra said upon learning about the agreement at a union meeting. “I appreciate all of my union sisters and brothers for making it happen.” “I’m excited to vote for my first union contract,” Angel Martinez from STIIIZY said. “With the union having my back, I no longer have to worry about favoritism on the job or being arbitrarily disciplined by management.” “This agreement was a collective effort on behalf of many dedicated union leaders and the employers,” President Duffle said. “We are honored to be the voice of cannabis workers in California and throughout the country as we push to make

career jobs in this new industry.” United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Union Local 1167 has a membership of approximately 19,500 workers and more than 3,500 retirees throughout the Inland Empire.
