Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Arthur Lyons Noir Film Festival was held at the Camelot Theatre on May 12th through May 15th. This was the 17th edition of the Film Noir that people love. Restored and very rare films from yesteryear bring memories to people that saw them as teens or young adults back in the 40s and 50s.
Some of the films are still in the original version of black and white. Many were considered B films with a dark side. A lot of these films starred great actresses in a different type of role that they were known for. The Film Noir Festival is also known for bringing in actors and actresses who were in the films shown. The age of

Celebrity guest was Claude Jarmin Jr. with the movie, Intruder in the Dust, and everyone remembers him in, The Yearling. He gave up Hollywood at the age of 20 after making 11 movies. The Noir Festival gives fans an opportunity to see their favorite actors like George Raft in, Red Light, The Accused with Loretta Young and Robert Cummings and one of my favorites, James Cagney in, White Heat. Many of these rare films are not on DVD and are not shown on TV. They are being restored for future generations to enjoy. These are considerable stories along with great acting. We hope they continue to try to restore these old film gems from long ago.

and “Captain America: Winter Soldier” which detail the friendship between Steve Rogers, aka Captain America and his World War II buddy James “Bucky” Barnes (Sebastian Stan), also known as the Winter Soldier. Eventually, you will figure out their close connection as I finally did, but the link will be more apparent if you have already seen the other two films. As “Captain America: Civil War” begins, the Avengers are trying to make the world a better place in Lagos, Nigeria, but things get out of hand. Soon there is massive collateral damage, which causes the world and the United Nations to question the group’s ability to keep evil in check. After the botched Nigerian battle, Tony Stark (Iron Man) meets Alfre Woodard, the mother of a young man killed in a previous battle with evil vs. the Avengers. As a result, Stark begins to agree with the Secretary of State and 116 nations that the Avengers should sign the Sokovia Accords, named after a fictional city destroyed during another super-hero invasion in a preceding super hero film “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” In that story, the battle between good and evil forces also led to catastrophic damage. Now back to the current film plot. Captain America does not want to wait to be asked for help by the UN and remains steadfast in his resistance to signing the Accords. He is also determined to help his buddy, now known as “The Winter Soldier,” regain his reputation.
To accomplish this, they must find out who is controlling the Winter Soldier’s mind against his will. Another clue, the perpetrator is a character from “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” The split decision over honoring the UN sanctioned accords results in a major conflict, between the two rival Avenger forces. And at this point, what really lightens up the film, and I must confess what led to my favorite part of the movie, is Tony Stark reaching out to a neophyte hero, the very young Spider Man. According to co-director Joe Russo, “ We wanted to introduce free radical characters into the storytelling.” And young Spidey is all of that and more. For starters, he’s a 15-year-old kid from Queens with special powers unlike any of the other Avengers. He is also loaded with younglooking enthusiasm, which generates much-appreciated comic relief. To capture this young-looking, awe-filled energy the filmmakers cast 19-year-old Tom Holland. His presence in the big onscreen battle between the opposing Avenger forces is truly a highlight of the film. “Captain America: Civil War” rated PG-13 for extended sequences of violence, action and mayhem has a running time of 2 hours, 27 minutes.

Today, entertainment and entertainment news is one the highest grossing industries in America. Nostalgia in everything Hollywood has produced volumes of books, articles, and plays. There are actors who became celebrities, then there are actors who became legends, and then there are the super ICON’s of Hollywood. Katharine Hepburn was a super ICON. She was also a very smart, gifted, alpha female actor who knew how to get what she wanted when it came to being cast in a movie. “Tea at Five”, is a saucily written one-woman
monologue about Hepburn by Matthew Lombardo based on Hepburn’s book “Me: Stories of my Life”. Nicely co-directed by Wendy Cohen and Marge Doyle, the play serves up anecdotes and facts (some of which may be apocryphal) on the career of the great Kate Hepburn, the only actor to win four Leading Role Oscars. The challenge of bringing Ms. Hepburn to life on the stage of the Groves Cabin Theatre, in Morongo Valley, falls to Chicago-born local actor Susan Brundage. About ten years ago, Ms. Brundage discovered and fell in love with Lombardo’s one woman monologue play about Hepburn. In turn, she recently brought the play to the attention of Artistic Director and theatre founder Joy Groves, with an offer to portray Hepburn if Joy would produce it (Hepburn and Brundage are both red heads. It’s hard to say no to redheads). Many people may not be familiar with some of the incidents in Hepburn’s starcrossed life and career. As the audience, we are made privy to many moments in her fascinating, and at times, her turbulent up and down movie and stage career. There is the twenty-seven year Spencer Tracy period that lasted until his death. Hepburn had few regrets when it came to her career. Her one great disappointment was her losing

the role of Scarlett O’Hara in “Gone with the Wind” to then unknown Vivien Leigh. But, no more spoiler alerts. One must come to the theatre to discover a Hepburn you only thought you knew. Ms. Brundage is an engaging personality and actor whose smile can light up a large train station. Her interpretation of Hepburn is not only entertaining and winning, it’s also a tribute to her own memorization skills. She never leaves the stage except for the act break. It’s a true test of stamina and talent that produces an astonishing performance. In the technical department the functional
intimate drawing room set is uncredited as are the lighting and costume design, but is nevertheless, a perfect fit for the tiny 22 seat theatre. I suspect that codirectors Cohen and Doyle are responsible for most of technical elements. Don’t let the size of the stage dissuade you from attending. The Groves Cabin Theatre is the most honored theatre by the Desert Theatre League, with more than 50 Desert Star Awards to their credit. “Tea at Five” performs on Saturdays at 7 pm and on Sundays at 2:30 pm through June 12, 2016. Reservations are a must! Call the box office at 760-365-4523.
Groves Cabin Theatre dishes on the life of icon Katharine Hepburn
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The world fell in love with the movies about one hundred years ago. Instead of losing interest in what some said was just a passing fad, the movies and its actor/celebrities have instead grown from mere curiosities, to fascination, to an all-consuming addiction. Hollywood became a movie studio-mecca, producing ‘the ‘stuff that dreams are made of’, to quote Humphrey Bogart in “The Maltese Falcon”.

‘Egg’ceptional choices for breakfast fans
By Pamela Price The next time you crave eggs for breakfast, whether it’s one lonely fried egg ($1.50) off the menu at La Copine on Old Woman Springs Road in Flamingo Heights, in Yucca Valley or scrambled eggs with bacon at The Parker Palm Springs “cozy diner” style restaurant, Norma’s it’s obvious there’s more going
on behind the scenes with breakfast today then ever before. Mark Farley, a wellseasoned marketing director and a serious breakfast fan said breakfast is the new lunch, noting that breakfast styles are diverse and the cost can range from lavish too economical. Dining al fresco on the sun-drenched patio at The Parker costs nearly
$100 for two, attribute that to two eggs and bacon priced at $27. With that in mind, here’s a trio of exceptions, which honor the egg at more plebeian prices. At Townie Bagels/Bakery/Café in Palm Springs where you order on the counter, enabling you to view and inhale the freshly baked bagel and variety’s forms cinnamon raison to
sesame, the choices are few but fabulous after one bite. The bagel + egg breakfast for 3.25 is a good place to start. Even with the trimmings such as cheese and bacon, the most you’ll pay is $6.67, that’s for the “Everything Bill Feingold, which has too many add-ons to list here. Another contender for exceptional eggs is Spencer’s Restaurant in Palm Springs at the Tennis Club. While I would rather go into raptures on Spencer’s “one large waffle served with soft butter mixed berries and whipped cream” I will focus on their traditional “three country fresh eggs” (I recommend pancake style), with delicately sliced fruit and one of the most perfectly toasted bagels in the desert served with soft cream cheese ($8.95). No surprise Spencer’s was locally voted Best Sunday
By Desert Star Staff Just a week and a day after Mothers’ Day, comes Mothers’ Equal Pay Day, a date that marks how far into 2016 a mom typically has to work to make up for last year’s difference in income between moms and dads. The observance today is based on a National Women’s Law Center study that shows mothers make 73 cents for every dollar fathers make. Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner,
head of the organization Moms Rising, says another study, from Stanford University, illustrates how mothers are discriminated against when it comes to hiring and pay. “Moms are 80 percent less likely to be hired than nonmoms for the same job,” she points out. “And in fact they’re also – for highly paid jobs – offered $11,000 lower starting salaries. Dads on the other hand are offered $6,000 more.” In Washington state,
mothers make less than 69 cents for every dollar fathers make. Annually, the gap amounts to $19,000 less for Washington mothers. Rowe-Finkbeiner says U.S. lawmakers should update the Paycheck Fairness Act so that wages in companies are more transparent and patterns of inequality can be identified. “When we’re talking about discrimination against moms, we’re talking about a lot about subconscious, implicit bias,”
Rowe-Finkbeiner states. “There isn’t a committee of people saying, ‘Let’s pay moms less.’ It’s a lot of subconscious, small decisions that significantly add up over time in a really big way.” Rowe-Finkbeiner says paid family leave, affordable child care, and easy access to health care can also help lower the wage gap. As head of Moms Rising, Rowe-Finkbeiner hears many stories from working mothers.

Brunch. My old standby is Manhattan Delicatessen Bakery Restaurant, Palm Desert and Palm Springs with eggs served 15 different ways (grade AA local eggs only said the menu), you can also “build your own omelet with choices ranging from homemade Chile to ‘lox trim’. A traditional “one egg any style” with hashed brown potatoes and a toasted bagel and preserves (ask for the scrumptious house made applesauce) is divine at $5.99, and that’s a fraction of the egg duet at Norma’s at the Parker Palm Springs as well on East Palm Canyon in Palm Springs As, Mr. Farley a serious breakfast fan says, “I’ll take Manhattan!”
In one case, a woman came to a sad realization when she looked around and found most of her co-workers were women. “She walked up and she asked the director, ‘Why are there so many women here?’” Rowe-Finkbeiner relates. “And he said, ‘Because I can pay them less.’ And then she wrote in and said the part that’s heartbreaking, which is ‘I hadn’t yet learned I was less valuable than a man.’”

Day Symbolizes Pay Gap Between Moms and Dads
Anglo/Indian biopic engages with artistry and style
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic In “The Man Who Knew Infinity”, the world of 1914 eerily resonates with thorny issues still plaguing the 21st century; especially when it comes to culture, ethnicity, diversity, and the meritorious acceptance of individuals. Most Americans don’t really understand or comprehend the English and their “tight little island” mentality. If one wants to irritate an Englishman just call him a European; but be prepared to duck if you happen to be in a pub just before closing. England is a small county geographically. In 1914, about 60 million souls lived on an island where no one was, and still is, never more than seventy-five miles from the sea. As colonizers, they brought their culture, language, and the English point-of-view to whatever land they came to. In India of 1914, the British Raj had been embedded in power and in the running of the Indian government for almost 150 years. The intriguing story of “The Man Who Knew Infinity”, insightfully written and deftly directed by Matthew Brown, historically echoes some of the mathematics themes that are present in, not only in the 2015 Oscar-nominated film “The Theory of Everything”, starring Eddie Redmayne who walked away with a Best Actor statuette as astrophysicist Steven Hawking, but also was the subject matter in the earlier film “Good Will Hunting” where Matt Damon nabbed a Best Support Oscar. Once again, mathematics is the backdrop for this
engaging, finely crafted, and nicely acted Anglo/ Indian biopic based on the real life experience of Indian mathematics scholar Srinivasa Ramanujan. His field of expertise was in solving the “prime numbers” conundrum, vexing the world’s mathematicians. The superb Jeremy Irons stars as the brilliant, eccentric, and passionate Cambridge University mathematics professor G. H. Hardy. When Hardy is confronted with the mathematics genius of a young twenty-five year- old completely self-educated Indian student from Madras, named S. Ramanujan (stoically and poignantly played by Dev Patel) Hardy’s faith and passion for his chosen profession is put the test. Hardy agrees to sponsor and mentor Ramanujan at the behest of an old Indian friend convincing the admissions and faculty at Trinity College, Cambridge that another budding genius should be given an opportunity. After all, one its more famous students, Isaac Newton while sitting under an on-campus apple tree one afternoon discovered ‘gravity’; altering the world of science forever. Who knows where genius comes from? In the case of Ramanujan, Hardy, an avowed atheist asks where he gets his mathematic ideas and formulas from? “I get them from God”, he sincerely replies. The beauty and simplicity of the film will appeal to viewers who don’t give a fig for analysis of story points and/or whether they need to have a degree in mathematics to appreciate the give and take that Ramanujan endures from his erudite, but boorish and snobbish colleagues concerning his theorems and lack of “proofs”
to back up his claims. This is a feel-good movie that that celebrates the victory of an outsider over the insiders. It is the clashing of the Titans of East-West cultures – India the symbol of eastern thought, and England (at that time the reigning power intellectually as well as militarily) the guardian of western thought. When one contemplates today’s world and its problems, the movie is a welcome and enjoyable respite. “The Man Who Knew Infinity” is another one of those quintessential British movies in the vein of Merchant/Ivory films whose verisimilitude of the film’s period setting immediately envelops the viewer. If you enjoy rain and glowering scenery in the winter and the eagerly awaited English spring, with its flowers and fleeting sunshine, then you’ll feel right at home. Now you know why actors in early English films never seemed to take off their coats, even while eating. It’s bloody cold! I know, I lived there for three years. Director Brown scored a major coup when he asked if he could take his camera, cinematographer Larry Smith and the crew along with the cast to Trinity College, Cambridge to film many of the scenes that take place in the movie. The supporting cast
of characters consisting of academics, believers and skeptics are solidly performed by professional actors: Toby Smith (a believer) as Professor Littlewood; Jeremy Northam, as Bertrand Russell (a believer) who tells Hardy to forget protocol and let Ramanujan soar with his theories; Richard Johnson as Vice Master Henry Jackson (a skeptic) and the lovely Devika Bhise as Ramanujan’s loyal young wife Janaka, who remains in Madras while her young husband pursues his academic studies.
The film moves slowly at first, allowing the audience to settle in, but picks up speed in the middle section and continues to unfold to its inevitable conclusion. We Yanks are an impatient lot, however there’s no hurry. We should re-learn to slow down and smell the roses along the way. The results are usually worth waiting for. “The Man Who Knew Infinity” opens at the Camelot Theatres, Palm Springs, and at The River Theatre complex in Palm Desert on May 20, 2016.
