EgyptAir Flight 804

EgyptAir Flight 804 vanished from radar on its way from Paris to Cairo with 66 people aboard, the airline said Thursday.

‘Let’s not jump to conspiracies’: Egypt’s minister warns against speculating about MS804 crash By Desert Star Staff Egyptian Civil Aviation Minister Sharif Fathi has called on people not to make up conspiracy theories and to wait for the results of the investigation of the EgyptAir flight crash. However, he added that no “important” evidence has been found so far. The minister stressed that

“smoke” that was reportedly detected on board the EgyptAir plane before the catastrophe only indicates that “something” happened with the aircraft and that investigation should no focus on finding out what may have caused this smoke and not on developing “conspiracy… or unrealistic theories.”

By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON, -- Fifty years ago this week the first pilot prototype Camaro was built. To commemorate this golden anniversary the Historic Vehicle Association (HVA) uncovered these little known gems. 9. Born in Cincinnati: The first pilot prototype Camaro (No. 100001) was assembled on May 21, 1966 at the General Motors Assembly Plant, located in Norwood, Ohio, a few miles from Cincinnati. Why Cincinnati? GM produced a large share of the subsequent production Camaros at the Norwood plant and used the construction of 49 pilot

prototypes to develop the assembly line and equipment needed for high volume, serial production. The Norwood plant was not going to be the only assembly line for Camaros, however, so the company also built three pilot prototypes at their Van Nuys, Los Angeles plant. “If you want me today to make a statement based on nonsense, then I will tell you [it was a] terrorist attack. But if you want to make statements based on sense and based on facts, then we have to wait and see,” Fathi told RT and other journalists. He also urged “everybody” to “be proficient” and to

At the same time, he admitted that the rescue teams have not been able to find any “important devices” so far that could shed the light on the root causes of the incident,

although they are “continuing and widening the search” and “retrieve some wreckages and human remains.” The minister also emphasized that locating the black box under the water in such location, where the plane crushed, “is a challenge Continues on Page 4

Thirty-one percent of small business owners spend over $300 to hire someone new, with 18 percent spending between $301 and $1,200 and another 12 percent spending over $1,200, according to Monster’s “Small Business,

difference between big gains or a hefty portfolio loss. Gross Domestic Product (GDP): Gross Domestic Product or GDP, can be a huge influence on your investment returns. Basically, GDP is the total amount of services and goods produced in a given country’s borders. This includes all of private and public consumption, government outlays, investments and exports less imports that occur within a defined territory. This measurement of a nation’s economic health impacts the up or down of the stock market returns. When an economy is healthy and growing, it is expected that businesses will report better earnings and growth, while a lower measurement can have the opposite effect on stock prices as businesses begin to suffer. Housing gains and industrial production will also be affected by this indicator. Unemployment Rate/ Jobs Report: Another very

strong indicator that affects the stock markets is the unemployment rate. Like GDP, rate of employment illustrates the development and the strength of the economy. The Jobs Report is reported monthly by the U.S. Board of Labor and accounts for approximately 80% of the workers who produce the entire gross domestic product of the United States. The statistic is used to assist government policy makers and economists in determining the current state of the economy and in predicting future levels of economic activity. These reports are critical measures of the economy’s overall health. The Consumer Price/ Produce Price Indexes: Both the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) measure the price changes of consumer goods and services of goods, in more than 200 different categories. In economics, a commodity is a marketable item produced

to satisfy wants or needs. The CPI data contains prices for homes, energy, food and medical items that people use on a daily basis, while the Producer Price Index (PPI) tracks the average price of over 10,000 commodities that companies will use to transform into finished goods (Food products, Live stock and Meat, Energy, Metals; precious and industrial, Palm oil, Rubber and Wool, to name a few). Higher PPI numbers could prevent a firm from expanding or hiring more workers, as the cost of producing goods increases. For investors, periods of high consumption and producer inflation can spell the death for corporate profits. The stock market can rise or fall based on the signals these two indicators provide. Higher consumer prices for basic goods can mean that there won’t be any leftover money to buy discretionary items, like Starbucks lattes. U.S. consumer prices

recorded their biggest increase in more than three years in April as gasoline and rents rose, pointing to a steady inflation build-up that could give the Federal Reserve ammunition to raise interest rates later this year. The Bottom Line is that the Fed has a 2 percent inflation target and tracks an inflation measure which is currently at 1.6 percent. The rise in prices in April is likely to be welcomed by Fed officials who have persistently expressed concerns about inflation running below its target.

community, are still volunteers, and association presidents can find themselves frustrated by the inability to attain quorum. One frequently used strategy is to have a director who cannot attend meetings give their “proxy” to another director, in the erroneous belief that this establishes quorum. However, the law does not recognize a “board proxy,” and all decisions made at a meeting which in fact does not have quorum could be subject to challenge as non-corporate actions. Tips on quorum: 1. A director may (unless the association governing documents ban it) participate in board meetings by speakerphone. Corporations Code 7211(a)(6) and Civil 4090(b) allow directors to participate by phone, so long as those attending can hear the director and the director can hear all in attendance. 2. Some directors cannot regularly attend meetings, but

avoid resigning because they are not “quitters” and do not want to give up on their service commitment. Let them off the hook by suggesting they resign until their circumstances allow them to serve. 3. Some board meetings are unnecessarily terminated because a director leaves before the agenda is completed and quorum is destroyed. Corporations Code 7211(a)(8) allows meetings to continue so long as a sufficient number of directors are present to constitute a majority of a quorum. In other words, if a five member board starts a meeting with three directors, and one director leaves, the two remaining present directors can still conduct association business. Two is the majority of the minimum quorum of a five member board, so those two can continue to make and pass motions, but they must act unanimously. 4. Consider amending

association bylaws to provide that directors missing three consecutive regularly scheduled meetings may be deemed to have resigned. This takes pressure off both board and director, as asking a director to step down can be uncomfortable. 5. Try to shorten meetings. Long meetings discourage volunteers, and can make board service impractical. For tips on shortening board meetings, see www. HOAHomefront.com.

HOA Homefront – Board Quorum By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL

In order for a common interest development to make a membership decision or board decision, “quorum” must first be attained. Quorum is a Latin word meaning “of whom”, but basically means that there is a sufficient number of participants in order to be able to fairly (and legally) call a decision a decision of the body. Without quorum, the body is not acting, so a decision made in a meeting without quorum is not a decision at all. Board Quorum: Boards must have a certain minimum number of directors present in order to make a corporate decision. Usually this is determined by the governing documents (normally, bylaws). However in the absence of any explicit statement in the bylaws, Corporations Code Section 7211(a)(7) states that “a majority of the number of directors authorized in the articles or bylaws constitutes a quorum of the board for the transaction of business. Mostly commonly, the quorum of the board is simply a majority of the directors. The existence of quorum is critical to establish that a vote taken in the meeting was actually a decision of the association. This is why the minutes should reflect which directors attended, so that quorum is documented. Without quorum, the board is not legally acting, so the corporation is not acting. Directors, while elected by their neighbors to serve the

‘In lieu of flowers’: Dead Americans vote via obituary By Desert Star Staff The presidential campaign has hit new lows… six feet under, in fact. Throughout the election cycle, the newly deceased have made their political final wishes known not through the ballot box (except maybe in Chicago), but through their obits. When Mary Anne Noland, 68, died on Sunday, her family decided to blame not her long battle with lung cancer, but the vitriolic race for the White House. “Faced with the prospect of voting for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton,” one of her sons wrote in her Richmond TimesDispatch obituary, she “chose, instead, to pass into the eternal love of God.” The opening line of the memoriam wasn’t intended as a parting shot at the leading presidential candidates, Noland’s widower

Jim told WWBT. Instead, it was a way to express her feisty sense of humor. Mary Anne ‒ or her family, rather ‒ was far from the first to issue voting directives from beyond the grave. Some people are “with her” and want their survivors to vote for Clinton, the frontrunner in the Democratic race for president. The December obit for David Arons, 97, said that “his biggest regret would be not living long enough to vote for Hillary Clinton.” Arons asked friends and family to “perhaps… consider helping fulfill his last wish by voting for Hillary themselves ‒ to benefit succeeding generations for which he cared so much, and for the welfare of the nation he served so honorably.” Others are all about making America great again, and ask their mourners to support

Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee. Yet the deceased are growing increasingly concerned with what people shouldn’t do after they’re gone, and their final wishes ask people to refrain from voting from one or the other candidate. Dorothy Revell Anderson, 97, was not about Clinton when she passed March 12. Same with 63-year-old Elaine Fydrych and Richard Buckman, 75, both of whom died last August. The family of Larry Upright, 81, “respectfully asks that you do not vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016,” they wrote in his April obit. “We did this for him,” son Mike Upright told WSOC. “He had nothing to do with it other than voicing his opinion time after time after time.” On the other hand, Jeffrey H. Cohen, 70, and Katherine Michelle Hinds, 34, might

have loved the #NeverTrump crusade. In both of their obituaries it reads, “in lieu of flowers, please do not vote for Donald Trump.” We’re sure that Trump

would only have one reaction to the ghosts who are railing against him: “Sad!” Of course, in Chicago, the dead voting is just business as usual.

Democrat, according to The Hill. “[This is] another example of the [John] Cornyn-Schumer collaboration, which works pretty well around here.” Senator John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, co-sponsored the bill and apparently prevailed over his South Carolina colleague Lindsey Graham, who had put a hold on the bill last month,

citing concerns it would open the US up to lawsuits by foreign governments. Graham’s office said he dropped the hold over the recent recess, The Hill reported. The bill faces bipartisan opposition in the lower chamber and the executive branch, however. “I think we need to review it to make sure we are not making mistakes with our allies and we’re not catching people in this that shouldn’t be caught up in this,” Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said last month, earning thanks from the White House. The Cornyn-Schumer bill seeks to create an exception in the doctrine of sovereign immunity established by a 1976 law, which has so far shielded Saudi Arabia from lawsuits over the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. Fifteen out of 19 hijackers involved were Saudi subjects. Citing sovereign immunity, a federal judge threw out a

lawsuit by the 9/11 families against the kingdom in September 2015. Under the Cornyn-Schumer bill, however, Riyadh could be sued because the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon killed American citizens on US soil. Saudi Arabia has voiced opposition to the bill. During the visit to Washington in March, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said the country would sell up to $750 billion in US treasury securities and other assets before the lawsuits put them in jeopardy. The warning was delivered by last month during a visit to Washington, the New York Times reported. He said his country would sell up to $750 billion in US treasury securities and other assets before the bill puts them in jeopardy. On Monday, the US Treasury Department revealed that the kingdom owned $116.8 billion in securities as of March.

Bill allowing 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia passes the Senate

By Desert Star Staff The US Senate adopted unanimously a proposed bill that would allow Americans to sue nation-states for terrorist attacks on US soil, despite opposition from the White House and allies such as Saudi Arabia. Dubbed “Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act,” the bill sailed through the

upper chamber of Congress without opposition Tuesday. It now heads to the House of Representatives, which has its own version of the proposal. This bill is very near and dear to my heart as a New Yorker because it would allow the victims of 9/11 to pursue some small measure of justice,” said Senator Charles Schumer, a New York

In the meantime, reports about smoke on the EgyptAir plane before its crash were confirmed by France’s Bureau

of Enquiry and Analysis for civil aviation safety (BEA). The Egyptian army has also released first photos of the wreckage of Flight MS804 and passengers’ belongings on Facebook. EgyptAir Flight MS804, en route from Paris’s Charles de Gaulle Airport to Cairo, dropped off radar screens early on Thursday in Egypt’s airspace. The search operation for the crashed aircraft, involving the Egyptian, French, Greek and US navies, has been ongoing for three days and covers the southern part of the Mediterranean. KY Among States with Biggest Cuts to Higher Ed Funding

By Desert Star Staff FRANKFORT, Ky. - Funding cuts to higher education have driven up tuition, making college less affordable and less accessible for many students, according to a new national report. With inflation factored in, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities says, Kentucky is spending 32 percent less on higher education than it did when the recession hit in 2008. The nationwide average is 17 percent less. Report author Michael Mitchell said almost every state now is trying to reinvest in college --while, in his words, Kentucky is “going backwards and digging its hole deeper.” “Unfortunately for students, when it comes to tuition, when it comes to quality of schools,” he said, “it puts in question whether or not those things will be be there - affordability and quality - moving forward.” The report showed that 37 states increased college

funding over last year, and said Kentucky is one of only three states to make cuts the last two years. Gov. Matt Bevin has cut university budgets 2 percent late in the current fiscal year, and the state’s new budget year, which begins July 1, will bring another 4.5 percent cut. To reverse the trend, said Ashley Spalding, a research and policy analyst at the Kentucky Center for Economic Policy, the state needs to clean up its tax code and end some of its tax breaks “to free up more funds, to enable greater investment in areas like higher education.” When adjusted for inflation, the report said, tuition has increased by about one-third at Kentucky universities since 2008. Spalding noted that’s in line with the national average but with an important caveat. “That doesn’t mean it’s affordable. We’re a poor state and our students can’t afford

By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON, D.C. –The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has approved a new federal mandatory standard intended to improve the safety of portable hook-on chairs and prevent deaths and injuries to young children. The Commission voted unanimously in favor of the standard (5 to 0) on March 8, 2016. A portable hook-on chair is a legless seat attached to a table where the occupant sits and that is supported solely by the table on which the chair is mounted. Portable hook-on chairs are intended for children between the ages of 6 months and 3 years and who weigh

no more than 37 pounds. The new federal standard incorporates by reference the most recent voluntary standard developed by ASTM International (ASTM F123515),Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Portable Hook-On Chairs, without modification. In addition, the new safety standard addresses hazards associated with portable hook-on chairs, including: - compromised attachment - restraint or containment issues - unintended release of seat fabric fastenings - seat fabric separation due to breaking or tearing components - broken structural

continued tuition increases. We have a lot of low-income Kentuckians without college degrees. Affordability should be considered in that context.” She added that the size of student debt in Kentucky rose

63 percent from 2008 to 2014. Students also have been affected by larger class sizes as well as elimination of faculty positions and course offerings, Mitchell said. “These are all things

components. From January 1, 2000 through October 31, 2014, CPSC received about 90 incident reports related to portable hook-on chairs. These reports included 50 incidents involving injury, 38 non-injury incidents, and one fatality. The effective date for the new mandatory portable hookon chair standard is 6 months

after the final rule is published in the Federal Register. The Commission is required by The Danny Keysar Child Product Safety Notification Act, Section 104(b) of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA), to issue consumer product safety standards for durable infant or toddler products. In the past

that can make navigating the college experience more complicated for students, can threaten educational quality and, ultimately, impact how many kids graduate,” Mitchell said.

Opposition to Oil Pipeline Growing

Crude oil travels down the Hudson River by rail and barge. (Andrea Sears) By Desert Star Staff Albany has joined dozens of other communities in opposing the Pilgrim Pipeline. The Albany City Council this week approved a

resolution calling the proposed pipeline an environmental risk and a public health hazard. The 178-mile project would carry crude oil from Albany to New Jersey and

By Desert Star Staff The Owyhee Canyonlands are the “connective tissue” for surrounding land in the West, according to a new study. Researchers with Conservation Science Partners compared the southeastern area of Oregon with Bureau of Land Management and other lands across the West and found the Owyhee to be one of the most biologically diverse and ecologically intact in the region. Conservation Science Partners president Brett Dickson, chief scientist of the report, said his team studied the area at a landscape level and found a high degree of what he called “naturalness.” “This notion of landscape naturalness is basically the inverse, if you will, of the level of human impact,” he said.

The report concluded that there’s “particularly high conservation value” to the 2.5 million acres of Owyhee Canyonlands because of its overall importance to the area. The canyonlands so far have maintained this preservation without permanent protections, although Dickson said local proposals for resource extractions could threaten it. The Owyhee Canyonlands also has one of the darkest night skies in the West because of its remoteness. Christine Albano, who also worked on the study, said the lack of development in the area is quite astonishing given its size. “It’s one of the most intact landscapes that are 2.5-million acres in size,” she said, “and that’s even comparing it to areas like Yellowstone National

refined products back. Roger Downs, conservation director for the Atlantic chapter of the Sierra Club, said the resolution sends a clear signal to the

pipeline’s developers. “They know that they’re going to need the approval of the city of Albany by a two-thirds majority,” he said, “and almost two-thirds of the Common Council voted in opposition to the pipeline.” Pilgrim Pipeline Holdings, the project developer, said a pipeline would be safer than transporting the oil by rail or on barges down the Hudson River. Several oil trains have derailed around the country, causing massive spills and, in one case, a fire that killed 47 people. However, Downs said, the crude oil is shipped to Albany from North Dakota by rail. “If you look at the numbers, the proposal will actually increase the number of oil trains coming through Albany,” he said, “and

Albany has already been inundated with these trains.” He said a pipeline wouldn’t necessarily eliminate oil trains and barges traveling down the Hudson Valley. Pipeline projects that, in years past, may have been rubber-stamped by regulators now are being successfully challenged. Downs credited growing public awareness of the dangers and alternatives for the change. “I think we’re seeing more and more citizens seeing the connections between these pipelines and climate change, and they realize that there is a better energy future ahead of them in renewables.” Last month, the state of New York denied a permit for construction of the Constitution Pipeline. Another, the Northeast Energy Direct project, was canceled by its developer. More information is online at stoppilgrimpipeline. com/resolutions.

Park and the Grand Canyon.” Combining his group’s study with other local research, Dickson said, the Owyhees’ uniqueness becomes apparent. “The Owyhees have, I

think, close to two dozen endemic plants, so found nowhere else on the planet,” he said. “And so, when you couple those local-scale values with the landscape ecological importance that we identified,

to completely clean it up. “Companies that extract these public resources have to be held accountable for the safety of those operations,” she said, “and when a spill does occur, there’s a price to pay to clean up the damage that’s done.” Plains All-American released a statement saying that while it regrets the accidental spill, its actions are not criminal in nature. The company noted that it has spent $150 million to mitigate the impact of the spill, which occurred after a severely corroded underground pipe owned by the company cracked, sending 140,000 gallons of heavy crude onto the beach. Kristen Monsell, an

attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity, said the situation calls for more wide-ranging changes. “All the indictments in the world aren’t going to change the fact that oil drilling and transportation is inherently dangerous and doesn’t belong in our fragile coastal environment,” she said. “Both the state and the federal government need to start decommissioning all of this aging offshore infrastructure.” The Oiled Wildlife Care Network reported that more than 200 birds and 100 marine mammals were killed and many more injured in the spill. Plains All-American could face $2.8 million in fines.

Medical cannabis for military veterans By Desert Star Staff Military veterans, particularly those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), may soon get access to medical cannabis in states that allow it after Congress voted to lift a federal ban. Both the House and Senate approved measures Thursday to block the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) from enforcing its rule that prohibits its doctors from even discussing the treatment. Veterans are celebrating the development since they know how medical cannabis offers a natural and less addictive alternative to mainstream prescription drugs, especially painkillers. Marijuana can treat conditions like PTSD, anxiety, insomnia, and chronic pain. “From what I hear from veterans is that medical marijuana has helped them deal with pain and PTSD, particularly as an alternative to opioids, said Rep Earl Blumenauer (D-Oregon), who argued for the Veterans Equal Access Amendment. Up to one in five veterans who served in Afghanistan and Iraq experience PTSD each year, according to VA stats, and 30 percent of Vietnam vets have suffered from the disorder at some stage. Veterans get addicted to prescription drugs at a higher rate than civilians. “Those with multiple deployments and combat exposure are at greatest risk

Soldiers and hippies will soon be able to smoke up together if the man who works in the building seen in this photo signs the bill. Š Mike Theiler / AFP of developing substance use problems,â€? writes the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), due to “the stresses of deployment during wartime and the unique culture of the military.â€? NIDA reports that pain relief prescriptions written by physicians in the military quadrupled between 2001 and 2009, reaching nearly 4 million. Maureen McCarthy, deputy chief of patient care services at the VA, discussed veteran patients with an undercover reporter, saying, “It’s people that have drug problems, some of which are caused by us and our prescribing.... We also look at the combination of patients on opiates, like morphine and benzodiazepine, like Ativan and Klonopin. ‌That combination is like candy for some people. ... [T]hey want it, they want it, they want it.â€?

The VA has been hit with scandals surrounding its treatment of veterans, with health care facilities exposed for falsifying waiting lists, contributing to the death of “more than 1,000 veterans, CNN reports. Since 2004, suicide rates among veterans have increased to an average of 2,500 deaths each year, which NIDA claims are often linked to substance abuse. Mike Whiter, a former Marine who stopped using prescription drugs for marijuana, told CBS, “I went from being an anxious mess to numbing myself with the pills they were giving me. Cannabis helped me get out of the hole I was in. I started to talk to people and get over my social anxiety. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have sent 2.2 million troops into battle, resulting in more than 6,600

deaths and 48,000 injuries. According to a 2013 report, 30-percent of young veterans are unemployed, double the rate of civilians. “Today’s Senate and House passage is an encouraging step forward. Bottom line: when veterans walk into a VA facility and talk with their doctor, they should be able to discuss all options available to them, amendment co-sponsor Sen Steve Daines (R-Montana) told the Military Times. NIDA identifies the military’s “zero-tolerance policies and stigma as well as a “lack of confidentiality as reasons veterans don’t seek treatment. The House voted 233189 in favor of the measure, and the Senate voted 89-8. Medical cannabis is legal in 24 states and Washington DC.

HOROSCOPES ARIES

In the past weeks you considered what was important to you. What was special, of value, and your monetary situation. These are important considerations. You might have asked how much am I worth and/or is what I’m doing worth it? You realized what would make you more comfortable, what to do with your cash (where to put it), and perhaps you researched gold and silver. If not, do so. Values and worth were your keynotes.

TAURUS You thought and re-thought on how to approach the world, the new world of new ideas. How to bring forth all that you’re worth in order to create changes in living, location, geography, purpose and way of life. You are the sign of the Art of Living. So where and how you live is important. Because people watch you, mentor you, imitate you. Something of great value hasn’t emerged from you yet. In will soon. It’s brilliant!

GEMINI The Mercury retro invited you to retreat into yourself, to be contemplative, to become a Pisces actually. Pisces and Gemini have a lot in common. Only these two signs are able to synthesize polarities and dualities. Dualities that you bring forth, the task of Gemini always. Did you feel alone

these last weeks? Did you receive messages? Did you dream? Spirit and Venus were with you. Create an altar.

CANCER Did you withdraw a bit from your usual social situations? When we are away from our usual habits, something unusual happens to us. We discover that we have an inner life and re-discover who we truly are. It’s important during the retrogrades to focus upon hopes, wishes and dreams. Even if you don’t yet know, ask each night before sleep. As the retrogrades ease, it will be time to reconnect and be with friends again.

LEO The past weeks gave you an opportunity to tend to previous tasks, old business, to bring closure to work no longer relevant. A question for you. Are you happy with your work, your career, or with what you do each day? Do you know what you hope to achieve? Have you thought of this before? Tend to the world of work with renewed vitality, a new vision and orientation. The world needs you at this time.

VIRGO The question posed to you these past weeks has to do with adventures. Have you had any recently? You’re due for a double shot of the world

expanding all around you. A new sense of identity, too. It’s important to consider where you might want to travel in the near future, what you would study, what cultures are of interest? Your mind needs new information so the hidden parts of you can come to life.

LIBRA Let all things secret come to light in your relationship. Let all your wealth be spread abroad. Let your gifts come forth, let them be shared with all who love you. Let anything that hinder your flow of love be eliminated. Let everything be forgiven. Forgiveness leads to the beginnings of understanding. Ask lots of questions. Listen deeply. Let the joy of others gifts wash over you.

SCORPIO It seems everything came into renegotiation these last weeks. What you thought you wanted and needed wasn’t. What you thought was important and what you valued turned out to be different. There were things unspoken, hidden, unknown. Things will continue to change for you over the next months. You are continuing to clear your path and forging ahead. Everything about work was, has been and continues to be re-organized. Even your daily life seems to be without an agenda. You reflect upon previous relationships and previous work situations. Sorting out what was good, what was valuable? All schedules have gone by the wayside. You’re called to be completely intuitive, flexible, discerning and unpredictable. In the meantime, in all the changes, care for your health first.

CAPRICORN Your creative energy was in a state of rest for awhile. This seeming withdrawal was quiet. It was to create a new underlying state of the arts, creativity and inspiration. What are you imagining now, what is inspiring you? Galleries, art magazines, dance, music, these reconnect you to spontaneity, playfulness and curiosity. NC Parents Fight for Power in Administration Changes By Desert Star Staff ASHEVILLE, N.C. Just how much control do parents have over what happens at their child’s public school in North Carolina? That’s the question Asheville parents are trying to find out as they protest a series of administration changes put in place by their system’s school board. The reassignments were decided in a closed session, and public comment was scheduled after complaints from students and parents. The superintendent has said she is making changes to help “close the achievement gap” in the school system. “They are making a lot of changes and doing a lot of shifting without really expressing how these changes are going to close the achievement gap,” said Julie Porter-Shirley, a PTO advocacy liaison who has children at Claxton Elementary, where the principal has been reassigned. “What’s frustrating to me and to many other parents is the lack of openness

and transparency.” Unlike many other school systems in the state, school board members in Asheville are appointed by members of the city council and not elected by voters. Only two other systems in the state -- Thomasville and Lexington -- have appointed boards. Public schools in the state are within their rights to make staff changes, but because board members are not subject to re-election, some parents feel they have less of a say when there are unfavorable policy changes. Asheville City Schools did not respond to a request for comment on this story. Molly Peeples, PTO copresident and a teacher at Claxton, said the loss of the school’s principal is impacting the very students in the “achievement gap” the school system says it is trying to help. “Since they’ve announced that she’s leaving, they literally are different kids,” she said. “They are angrier. It’s harder for them to focus. They don’t want to come to school because they

years and recently received recognition for her service. She has a message for other parents across the state who are confronting similar issues in their schools. “To be perfectly honest, there are times like this that I question what I do,” she said,

E N T E RTA I N M E N T ’I Only Have Eyes For You’ & ‘How to be Single’ on DVD BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

(L-R) Constantine Rousouli, Nikki Bohne, Jared Gertner, Kayla Parker and Justin Michael Wilcox in I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU (photo credit: Michael Lamont) If you are a millennial, the names Al Dubin and Harry Warren probably will not ring a bell, but if you are a Broadway baby of any age, you will be familiar with their musical collaboration on “42nd Street” which won the Tony for Best Musical in 1981. The show is the 14th longest-running show in Broadway history and from May 31 through June 19, “42nd Street” will be playing at the Pantages Theatre in all its glory. But before you see “42nd Street” at the Pantages, check out “I Only Have Eyes For You: The Life and Lyrics of Al Dubin” currently at the Montalban Theatre through June 12. This new musical, book by Jerry Leichtling and Arlene Sarner with lyrics and melodious sound by Al Dubin and Harry Warren, acquaints us not only with these two prominent men of music but also with the legendary film director Busby Berkeley, an innovator who created lavish

visual splendor on the big screen. While Berkeley created a look, Dubin and Warren’s songs created a sound and lyric style that defined the era—songs, like “We’re in the Money,” “42nd Street,” “Shuffle Off to Buffalo,” “You’re Getting To Be a Habit With Me,” “About a Quarter to Nine” and their 1935 Academy Award winner, “Lullaby of Broadway.” Dubin and Warren also wrote, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Lulu’s Back in Town” and “September in the Rain.” Jared Gartner, best known for playing the zaney Elder Cunningham in “The Book of Mormon” on Broadway, plays Al Dubin, a wizard with words whose lyrics have been heard continuously in 600 films and television shows dating back to when he wrote for talking pictures in the late 1920s. In the ‘30s, he teamed up with Harry Warren, and they penned songs for movie musicals, most of which were directed

by Busby Berkeley. Dubin was a man gifted with great talent and personality, but he was also plagued by personal demons like excessive eating, drinking, and drug use, which affected not only his health, but his marriage as well. The cast is uniformly talented, all with plenty of Broadway and touring credits. Nikki Bohne shines as Dubin’s devoted wife Helen, Valerie Perri plays his Mom and other roles; Renee Marino is Carmen Miranda, and Kayla Parker taps her little heart out as Ruby Keeler. Jeffrey Scott Parsons taps with Kayla in several numbers, and Robert Pieranunzi plays Busby Berkeley. Elijah Rock belts out as Cab Calloway, Dominic Pierson plays William and dances in the ensemble; Justin Michael Wilcox sings as Al Jolson and Constantine Rousouli is Harry Warren. The show is cleverly directed and choreographed

by Kay Cole, with beautiful costumes of the period designed by Debra McGuire. Gerald Sternbach, musical director/vocal and dance arrangements, conducts the outstanding band (piano, trumpets, trombone, woodwinds, cello, bass and drums.) Their sound is amazing. We stayed until the every last note was played. “I Only Have Eyes For You,” at the Montalban Theatre, 1615 Vine St. in Hollywood, runs through June 12. St. Joseph Players of Yucca Valley present Neil Simon’s “Broadway Bound”

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Neil Simon was the King of comedy playwrights during the 1960’s through the 1980’s He has written over thirty Broadway hits with three plays on the ‘great white way’ simultaneously. No other playwright has ever broken that record. Simon wrote mainly comedies. But he always infused his plays with some form of drama because drama is the stuff of life’s experiences. Remember life isn’t always a bowl of cherries, nor is it a never ending series of “Father Knows Best” shows either. However, with Simon, most endings were usually upbeat. In the St. Joseph Players current production of “Broadway Bound”, the third play in what is considered Simon’s semiautobiographical ‘Eugene trilogy’ involving the fictitious Jerome family. The other two plays are “Brighton Beach Memoirs” and “Biloxi Blues”. In “Broadway Bound”, however, he gives the audience a little more drama than they’re used to seeing in his plays.

The story of the Jerome family of Brighton Beach, New York are beginning to feel the pressure of the father Jack Jerome’s infidelity along with the strain of three generations living in close quarters amid the remnants of the great depression. With the impending winds of WW II beginning to rumble, it’s Kate, the mother of the Jerome family who is compelled to take charge of the household, along with her two sons Stanley and Eugene, who are just beginning to make their way in show business. And then there is the coping with her aging, live-in father Ben. There is a lot on Kate’s plate to deal with. Nicely directed by Rebecca Havely (who also plays the mother, Kate Jerome) “Broadway Bound” features familiar faces of actors seen in earlier St. Joseph plays as well as those seen in other hi-desert theatre productions. Vincent Thomas who plays Eugene Jerome, gets stronger each time he plays Simon’s alter-ego. He portrayed him in “Brighton Beach Memoirs” in last season’s production at St. Joseph. This time, Thomas plays a more mature Eugene who joins with older

The Chevrolet Camaro - Born 50 Years Ago This Week Continued from Page 1 public with show cars and concepts that hinted at the anticipated Mustang. GM, by contrast, revealed nothing about the Camaro until the car’s name announcement in June 1966 and formal Detroit launch in August 1966. Dealers had cars within a month. Boom. (Photo courtesy of HVA/Phil Parrish May 2016) 7. How about Panther? The Camaro almost wasn’t. GM brass considered dozens of names including “GeMini,” Commander,” and “Wildcat,” until finally settling on “Panther.” The company then invested over $100,000 in Panther badges only to dramatically change course just a few weeks before the debut. “Camaro” emerged as the dark horse winner. (Photo courtesy of HVA/Phil Parrish May 2016) 6. Camaro vs. Mustang: The Mustang proved that GM’s small and sporty Corvair wasn’t the right recipe. So GM rushed development of the Camaro, birthing the car in 36 months, and nearly photocopying Ford’s playbook. While the Camaro did not equal the Mustang’s incredible sales success—Ford sold www.desertstarweekly.com

over half a million Mustangs in 1965—GM moved more than 400,000 Camaros in the first two years. But perhaps more importantly, the Camaro kicked off Detroit’s greatest rivalry, pushing each to new heights. 5. A Golden Tradition: General Motors used a gold exterior and interior color scheme for its first prototypes and kept that tradition for the Camaro. And amazingly, that gold prototype Camaro (No. 100001) still exists. (Photo courtesy of HVA/ Phil Parrish May 2016) 4. Most Important New GM Model in 50 Years: The success of the Camaro not only represented a positive boost to General Motors’ sales and profits, but also played a key role in the subsequent boom of the so-called “muscle car” market. And GM was a powerhouse muscle car maker. (Photo courtesy of www.pilotcarregistry.com) 3. Camaro No. 100001 Will Enter the HVA’s National Historic Vehicle Register: The first Camaro (No. 100001) is currently being exhaustively measured and documented by the HVA using the guidelines set by the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Heritage Documentation and the Historic American

Chevrolet Camaro (PRNewsFoto/Historic Vehicle Association) Engineering Record (HAER). Once complete, the material will permanently reside in the Library of Congress, joining such iconic cars as the Shelby Cobra Daytona prototype, the first Meyers Manx dune buggy and one of the last surviving Futurliners. This is being done to preserve an important chapter in America’s automotive heritage. (Photo courtesy of HVA/ Phil Parrish May 2016) May 25, 2016

2. Third Most Popular Collector Car: With over one million collector car vehicles insured in the United States, Hagerty ranks the Camaro third in overall popularity. The most popular collector car is the Chevrolet Corvette followed by the Ford Mustang. (Photo courtesy of HVA/ Phil Parrish May 2016) 1. Coming to Detroit in August: A special HVA exhibition of the first Camaro

(No. 100001) will be on display in Detroit to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the launch in 1966. The exhibition will coincide with the annual Woodward Dream Cruise week (August 13-20). The first Camaro will be on public display in the HVA’s glass cube that recently featured President Reagan’s Willys Jeep on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Fashion Tips from a Top TV Costume Designer

Dan Lawson, costume designer for “The Good Wife” on CBS. By Desert Star Staff Whether you’re at work or on the town, you want your clothes to look their best. However, limited time and money can pose challenges to building and

maintaining a great wardrobe. Dan Lawson, costume designer for “The Good Wife” on CBS, offers the following tips to look put-together wherever you go, no matter what your budget is.

• Remember that wellfitted clothes can make or break an outfit. Set aside some money for alterations to get the proper fit and look your best in any particular garment. • Be willing to invest money

in “workhorse pieces,” those items you can wear for a long time that will be instrumental to each look. Staples for women include skirts, trousers and a good pair of shoes. For men, a well-fitted suit, a good dress shirt, shoes and a nice bag or briefcase. “Having a few key staples will give you the foundation for dozens of different outfits, as long as you take good care of these workhorse pieces and keep them in good condition,” says Lawson, whose work in costume design and wardrobe has garnered him Emmy nominations and theater awards. • Set aside a portion of your wardrobe budget on trendy items that may not last forever, but will make your outfits pop while the items are in style. When mixed and matched with your longer-lasting garments, you can create a new and fresh wardrobe. • Once you’ve taken the time to pull together all these items and have created a

wardrobe that you love and just can’t live without, it’s important to extend the life of these clothes. You can affordably prevent fading, shrinking and stretching with an athome dry cleaning product. Lawson uses Dryel onset to refresh clothing quickly. It’s an at-home kit that comes with special cloths, similar to dryer sheets, with special cleansers infused in them that steam clean your clothes in your dryer. The kit includes a protection bag and a spot cleaning booster spray, and requires only 15 minutes in the dryer or 30 minutes for a deeper clean -- and is a great time- and money-saving alternative to taking clothing to the dry cleaners, costing only 25 cents per item. More wardrobe maintenance tips can be found at www.Dryel.com. With some smart strategies, you can look chic, sleek and sophisticated every day of the week -- at home or at play -- without spending a fortune. StatePoint

Hot new technologies that can streamline and improve your life

By Desert Star Staff New technologies can transform ordinary objects and experiences into extraordinary ones. From everyday household objects to musical instruments to entertainment systems, there are many hot new technologies that are making daily items easier or better to use, and ultimately improving the lives of consumers. Here are three examples of new innovations and trends to consider incorporating into your life: Internet of Things: The

Internet of Things (IoT), a network of physical objects embedded with electronics and connectivity, is going to revolutionize our lives as it grows. New applications of this concept include IoT-connected locks, which can turn your smartphone into a portable key to your home, allowing users to create and delete keys as needed. Upgraded refrigerators that connect to the Internet to play music, and display digital messages, recipes and shopping lists. When shopping for just about anything, consider whether

there’s an IoT alternative and how it could help you. Hybrid Pianos: Designed to combine the advantages of digital technology with the traditional sound and feel of acoustic pianos, new hybrid options, such as Casio`s new CELVIANO Grand Hybrid pianos are providing the experience of a grand piano, including the tones, keys and comfort, without the bulk. Made with full-length wooden concert grand piano keys, they have the same essential weighting and pivotal points as their traditional counterparts.

Its amplification system also reproduces the threedimensional rich and complex sound field generated by an acoustic grand. With advanced analysis and signal processing, the pianos also recreate the acoustic characteristics of world-renowned concert halls, opera houses, cathedrals, and other venues like Berlin, Hamburg and Vienna for an immersive performance. To learn more about how these feats are accomplished, visit CasioMusicGear.com. Virtual Reality: The nascent virtual reality market (VR) is

finally reaching consumers, thanks to the efforts of dozens of industry leaders. From first person gaming to film creation and viewing to sport spectating, immersive entertainment systems are quickly becoming an affordable reality for more people. Newly announced gear will even make it possible for consumers to capture their own 360-degree 3-D VR content. New technologies can enrich your life, streamlining the way you run your household. New Bill Could Move Needle on Access to Dental Care in Ohio

By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohioans could have better access to oral health care under new legislation. Senate Bill 330, introduced Tuesday by Senator Peggy Lehner (R-Kettering), would expand the dental team to include dental therapists. They are specially trained practitioners who can perform some routine procedures, allowing dentists to focus on more complex cases. Dr. Larry Hill, who served as dental director at the Cincinnati Health Department, explains it’s a needed measure as there are 84 dental health professional shortage areas in Ohio. “This is the very first, very significant move that can actually move the needle on access to care,” says Hill. “Up until now we’ve kind

12

DesertSTAR

of been chipping away at the problem but not making a significant impact.” Under the legislation, dental therapists would focus on under-served communities, which Hill says can improve the availability of oral health care services for kids enrolled in Medicaid, low-income families and people in rural communities. The legislation would also allow dental hygienists to provide services to the full scope of their education, and train to become licensed in dental therapy. As a dental hygienist in the Dayton area, Ann Naber explains that while there are not enough dentists to meet the need, there is an oversupply of hygienists. “Their salary versus a dentist’s salary, there’s a big difference,” says Naber. “So

Ohio joins several other states in considering legislation to expand the use of dental therapists. (Pixabay) we could provide routine dental services, at a much lower cost, more affordable especially for the low-income, uninsured, under-served.” Hill explains the momentum to expand the use of dental therapists is building with a dozen states considering May 25, 2016

similar legislation. And he disputes those who argue the therapists are not trained to the same level as a dentist. “In westernized countries, as well as in Alaska and Minnesota, the quality of care that these folks provide has been demonstrated to be every

bit as good or better than that provided by dentists,” Hill says. The Commission on Dental Accreditation, which provides education standards for dentists and hygienists, recently issued standards for dental therapy. StatePoint www.desertstarweekly.com

US is ‘under-incarcerated,’ should lock more people up

By Desert Star Staff Despite having the world’s biggest inmate population and secondhighest incarceration ratio, the US should send more offenders to jail, Republican Senator Tom Cotton has said, adding that freeing inmates would make the US like Iraq. In an attack on proposed criminal justice reforms, Cotton criticized bipartisan efforts to address America’s overpopulation of prisons by reducing mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent crimes. He said the bill proposing the move was “dead in this year’s Senate,” and went on to dismiss the justification for the motion by arguing that America should incarcerate more people, rather than fewer. “The claim that too many criminals are being jailed, that there is over-incarceration, ignores an unfortunate fact: for the vast majority of crimes, a perpetrator is never identified or arrested, let alone prosecuted, convicted,

and jailed,” Cotton said during a Thursday speech at The Hudson Institute He added: “Law enforcement is able to arrest or identify a likely perpetrator for only 19 percent of property crimes and 47 percent of violent crimes. If anything, we have an underincarceration problem.” As of the end of 2014 there were over 2.3 million inmates in America, including federal, state and local prisons and juvenile correction facilities, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The latest rankings from the Institute for Criminal Policy Research at Birkbeck, University of London, place the US as the nation with largest prison population in the world. Per capita, it has more inmates than any other country in the world except the Seychelles, a tiny island nation that has about 90,000 citizens. Cotton said reducing punishment for crimes would inevitably result

in rising crime rates. “I saw this in Baghdad. We’ve seen it again in Afghanistan,” recalled Cotton, who served tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. “Security has to come first, whether you’re in a war zone or whether you’re in the United States of America.” Instead of sending fewer people to prisons, the conservative senator said the facilities should be enlarged. “I will, though, happily work with my colleagues on true criminal-justice reform – to ensure prisons aren’t anarchic jungles that endanger both inmates and corrections officers, to promote rehabilitation and reintegration for those who seek it, and to stop the over-criminalization of private conduct under federal law,” Cotton said. “But I will continue to oppose any effort to give leniency to dangerous felons who prey on our communities.” Responding to Senator Cotton’s comments, fellow legislator Charles Grassley,

who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, called them an unfunded attack and said the bill has strong support from law enforcement. “The opponents of the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act will stop at nothing to derail a historic bill aimed at safely and sensibly reducing excessive sentences while preserving important law enforcement tools to take down large criminal organizations,” the Iowa Republican said, as cited by the Washington

Post. “We continue to make progress with the bill and remain hopeful that it will be considered by the full Senate.” The US criminal justice system has mandatory minimum terms for many crimes. Critics, including serving judges, say the system allots harsh punishments for minor offences, and often results in pushing to a career of crime people who would go on the straight and narrow if they received a suspended term for their offenses.

MUSIC Classic, modern-day artists reemerge via crucial releases BY ROBERT KINSLER

The Posies are back with their first new studio album in more than five years, while “Wrong Side of the River” features new music from acclaimed singersongwriter Rob Baird. There are also must-have reissues featuring hit maker Eric Carmen and vocal group the Impressions out now.

Artist: The Posies Title: Solid States (My Music Empire) You might like if you enjoy: Cheap Trick, Death Cab For Cutie, Big Star Tell me more: Cool! The Posies are back with their first album since 2010’s “Blood/Candy.” From the tuneful opener “We R Power” and intoxicating “Unlikely Places” to the lush “Titanic” and electronica-tinged retro delight “Definition,” the Posies

(featuring founding members Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer) have survived the tragic loss of drummer Darius Minwalla in May 2015 and bassist Joe Skyward in March 2016 to rebound with yet another masterwork. Several songs find the outfit pushing themselves in new and winning directions, including the ambitious post-power pop original “The Plague” and dreampop treasure “Rollercoaster Zen.” Information: theposies.net. Artist: Eric Carmen Title: Eric Carmen (Varèse Sarabande Records) You might like if you enjoy: The Raspberries, Paul McCartney’s 1980s recordings Tell me more: Unavailable on CD for more than 20 years, singer-songwriter Eric Carmen’s fifth solo release

(originally released in 1984) has been reissued as an essential expanded and remastered edition. Acclaimed as one of the architects of power-pop music thanks to his role in the Raspberries during the early ‘70s, Carmen’s subsequent solo career found him carving out a niche via a number of ballads and rock anthems. “Eric Carmen” delivers on his strengths via the uptempo hit “I Wanna Hear It From Your Lips” (featured on the disc is the original top 40 single version and a rare 12-inch version) and equally infectious “American As Apple Pie” and tender ballads (“I’m Through With Love,” “Living Without Your Love”). Information: EricCarmen.com.

You might like if you enjoy: Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell Tell me more: Memphisborn Rob Baird’s “Wrong Side of the River” is a wonderful showcase of the artist’s blend of authentic old school country, modern-day Americana and flat-out great songwriting. A terrific singer to boot, the 10-song disc features a wealth of confessional and authentic tunes delivered with depth; standouts include the uptempo rootsy country rockers “Pocket Change” and “Wrong Side of the River,” as well as the lovely ballad “Run of Good Luck” and sparse “When I Go.” Information: RobBairdMusic.com.

Artist: Rob Baird Title: Wrong Side of the River (Hard Luck Recording Company)

Artist: The Impressions Title: The Best of The Impressions: The Curtom Years (Varèse

Sarabande Records) You might like if you enjoy: Curtis Mayfield, Jerry Butler Tell me more: For fans of classic gospel, soul, R&B and doo-wop, few groups were as skilled at crafting amazing songs as the Impressions. A new collection (“The Impressions: The Curtom Years”) showcases the American vocal group delivering a wealth of memorable and timeless classics including the Curtis Mayfield-penned “Fool For You,” “Check Out Your Mind” and “This Is My Country.” The collection spans highlights from the Grammy Hall of Fame inductees’ recordings tracked from 1968 to 1976. Among the many great songs here are the gospel-styled “Amen” and beautiful “Say You Love Me.” Information: VareseSarabande.com.

Director, Harold Prince was once quoted as saying of Teri, “that’s the best voice I’ve ever heard.” In fact, she is also often referred to as one of Sondheim’s “babies”. “Songs I’ve Grown Into” is a nostalgic look at songs I have sung over the years and what they meant to me then and what they mean to me now, after these wonderful years of May 25, 2016

living and experiencing the ups and downs of life..... happy to say.... mostly ups,” says Teri. “I really thought I understood many of these songs when I was 20 years old. I would say I certainly have a different understanding now. These are songs I love from the oldies such as “You’ll Never Know”, “Bill”, “Just Because”, to songs from many of the shows I have done over the years and certainly Sondheim including “Send in the Clowns”. I have a surprise medley that I am sure you will enjoy. If I do say so myself, it is a fun evening.” The Teri Ralston Cabaret performance is Friday, June 3rd and Saturday, June 4th at 7 PM and Sunday, June 5th at 2 PM at the Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre located at The Atrium, 69-930 Highway 111 in Rancho Mirage. other special performances throughout the summer, including additional Cabaret performances, a Jazz Series, Staged Readings, and more.

TERI RALSTON BIOGRAPHY Born in Colorado, moving to California at age 12, and spending her formative years after college in New York, then returning to California, Broadway veteran Teri Ralston recently—and happily—once again moved back to New York, an event inspiring the title of her new CD, I’VE GOTTA GET BACK TO NEW YORK. Her television credits include FRASIER, DHARMA AND GREG, GEPPETTO, GEORGE CARLIN, WINGS, MURDER SHE WROTE, THE SLAPP MAXWELL STORY, ONE DAY AT A TIME, MARRIED WITH CHILDREN, and THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL. www.desertstarweekly.com

Here’s how it works:

Bartenders upload a photo of themselves with their perfectly poured WARSTEINER (preferably poured into Warsteiner’s signature tulip glass) to www. perfectpouroff. com. Photos can be serious or silly, but they must demonstrate mastery of Warsteiner’s fourstep Perfect Pour ritual. To watch, visit: https:// www.perfectpouroff. com/watchperfect-pour/. Nearly 8 in 10 Public Swimming Pools Fail

Parents are urged to buy water-quality test kits before letting kids play in public pools and water parks. (Virginia Carter) By Desert Star Staff Healthy and Safe Swimming Week begins Monday, and in a new report, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says nationwide testing shows most public

swimming areas had at least one violation, and one in eight had to be closed immediately. Dr. Michael Beach, the agency’s associate director for healthy water, said it doesn’t mean never to go to a public

pool or water park, but it does mean people should be proactive by checking to see if the water’s OK. He said one simple way to do that is by buying test strips. “You’re essentially taking a strip and dipping it in the water and reading a color,” he said. “Make sure the drain at the bottom of the deep end of the pool is visible. This means the water is clear enough for lifeguards and others to see swimmers underwater who may need help. If you can’t see the main drain, the pool shouldn’t be open.” The CDC looked at data on tests done on 85,000 public swimming areas with water that has been treated. Beach said human feces accounts for about three quarters of all

outbreaks of illness from public pools. The parasite behind it, cryptosporidium, is resistant to chlorine, Beach said, adding that filters and disinfectants aren’t enough. He said that means state and local health departments may have to come up with tougher regulations to protect swimmers. “This will take time and commitment from all parties,” he said, “but I think we’re moving forward on that as health departments start to think about taking some of this guidance and putting it into their own regulations.” The problem could be worse than reported. Beach said less than 70 percent of U.S. local public health agencies regulate, inspect, or license public aquatic facilities.

World Premiere of new noir musical “Hollywood” at La Jolla Playhouse

(L-R) Martin Meccouri, Shaun T. Evans, Katherine Ko, Scott Drummond and Lee Sellars in La Jolla Playhouse’s world premiere of HOLLYWOOD, by Joe DiPietro, directed by Christopher Ashley, running May 10 – June 12 in the Mandell Weiss Theatre; photo by Jim Carmody. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The La Jolla Playhouse has the best track record of any West Coast theatre when it comes to sending their original theatrical productions to Broadway (over 30 of them to date). Their 2008 musical production “Memphis”, written by Joe Di Pietro and directed by Christopher Ashley went on to Broadway winning a 2010 Tony Award for Best Musical. The just opened world premiere noir musical thriller “Hollywood”, again written by Di Pietro, and helmed by Ashley, is looking to pull off a Tony Award-winning ‘Daily Double’ coup, as the punters say at nearby Del Mar Racetrack. In this critic’s opinion, “Hollywood” has excellent odds to encore the feat in the 2017 Broadway season. How could it miss? It’s perfect fit! There is no love lost between the movie and TV industry ‘Titans of Hollywood’ and the guardians of the legitimate stage theatres of New York; The Broadway Theatre League. Broadway regularly disses all things Hollywood, especially actor/ movie stars trying to burnish his or her acting chops by doing a turn on Broadways’ stages. Perhaps, it’s a form of payback for the flight of their beloved Brooklyn Dodgers who bolted for the Shangri La weather of Southern California back in 1956. Who knows? But, I digress. The story is set in 1922 and is based on a real life event that shocked the silent movie industry. America embraced the motion picture and the actors performing in them almost immediately. People then as today, couldn’t get enough of even the smallest bit of gossip concerning their favorite celebrity. Hollywood was a magnet for the starstruck. Young girls with their mothers in tow descended on the fledgling industry who were making movies operating in a small section of Los Angeles called Hollywood, hoping to become part of this exciting, www.desertstarweekly.com

and excess-oriented life style. Handsome and famous real life movie actor/director William Desmond Taylor was in the vanguard of male and female celebrities that drank, used drugs, went to sex orgies and seduced their leading ladies and vice versa. It was during this period that the term ‘casting couch’ came into use. Prohibition was repealed. And to borrow the title from a Cole Porter musical, it really was, for a time, a place where “Anything Goes” and very few complained. Famed movie director William Desmond Taylor (Scott Drummond) is found murdered in his home. The celebrity suspects mount as the headlines explode with lurid reports of love triangles, hush money, infidelities, drug use and cover-ups. Enter Indiana’s favorite son Will Hays (Patrick Kerr) Hollywood’s newly appointed moral watchdog, determined to silence the scandal and “purify this increasingly corrupt city.” Boy, does he have his work cut out for him. The productions stars Tony winner Harriet Harris as a strong Charlotte Shelby one of many suspects along with her daughter Mary Miles Minter played by Talene Monohon, Taylor’s youthful leading lady. The cast also includes Maththew Amendt, Jacob Bruce, Shaun T. Evans, Katherine Ko, Martin Meccouri, Kate Rockwell, Lee Sellars, Caroline Siewert and Terrance White. “Hollywood” is a ‘who dunnit’ murder mystery, which at times, delivers intentional over-the-top performances. This is a cast who know how to deliver the goods. It’s steamy, sexy, and funny, despite the murder that no one really wants to solve (including the police). “Audiences are in for a fantastic night at the Playhouse with Joe’s smart and sexy new play. Though set in the Golden Age of movies, “Hollywood” depicts a time and territory that is uncannily like our own, both politically and culturally,” said Ashley in an earlier press statement. And he ought to know. He’s one of most savvy and inventive

directors working today. I still remember his inspired direction of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at the Playhouse several seasons back. The creative team led by Ashley delivers a wonderfully nuanced set design by Wilson Chin that draws in the audience into the story. The lighting design by Howell Binkley who also designed the lights for the blockbuster New York production “Hamilton”, allows just the right amount of light to capture the noir feel, yet see the periodperfect costumes of Paul Tazewell. The sound design

by Chris Luessmann and the projection design by Tara Knight and music composer and piano player Wayne Barker, are also first rate. “Hollywood”, is a splendid, fast-paced noir musical thriller that rings every bell and toots every horn and whistle. It’s a show that not only entertains big time, it also sports the trappings and technical elements that fit the profile reserved for large and glitzy Broadway productions. The richly creative and inventive team of Di Pietro and Ashley make a strong case for lightning to strike once again

when Tony Award time comes around in 2017 or 2018. Naturally, there will be pruning, tightening, crafting and shaping the production to fit the Broadway profile. There will no doubt be rewrites, even new songs and numbers either to add or to delete. But when the production opens, I believe both coasts will be pleased on opening night. I’ve already transferred this sensational production to Broadway. “Hollywood” performs at the La Jolla Playhouse’s Mandell Weiss Theatre and runs through June 12, 2016.
