All Coachella Valley local indie film “Do It Or Die” debuts it’s world premiere at Palm Springs International Film Festival By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Don’t ever let anyone tell you that the passion for the arts is just an ego trip and a passing fancy. Au contraire. Case in point. A group of local professional and dedicated actors, writers, producers and a director, along with a savvy group of technical film

professionals gave birth just a few months ago to the thriller film “Do It or Die”, written by Shane Avila, directed by Jorn Winther, and starring Denise DuBarry. They also had the intestinal fortitude to submit their collaborated effort to the prestigious Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) and the good fortune to

By KMIR News Staff INDIO, Ca. -A prosecutor Monday took issue with an accused cop killer’s attorney for telling the media that the case would not get to trial for at least three years, which she said would cause undue pain for the families of the two slain officers. John Hernandez Felix, 26, faces first-degree murder and other allegations that could land him on death row if convicted of the Oct. 8 killings of veteran training Officer Jose Gilbert Vega, 63, and rookie Officer Lesley Zerebny, 27. Felix also allegedly wounded a third officer, and fired on two others. The two murder counts include special circumstance allegations of murder of a law enforcement officer, lying in wait and taking

multiple lives in the same crime and make Felix eligible for the death penalty. Assistant District Attorney Michelle Paradise said there was no reason why the case couldn’t take one year or less to get to trial and reproached defense attorney John Dolan from making comments that she said ``could completely distress our victims’ families.’’ She referred to a Nov. 10 story in the Desert Sun, in which Dolan told the newspaper that the case would be lengthy, taking up to three years before getting before a jury, though he did not provide any specific reason for his timeline. ``If Mr. Dolan cannot complete this case within three years because of his busy calendar schedule

have it accepted by the festival. The making of any motion picture is definitely a collaborative effort. In order to set the project in motion it takes a producer that not only believes in the project but has the talent and schmoozing gifts to coordinate all the disparate required elements of moviemaking

and then try to do it, no less, on a shoe-string budget. “Do It Or Die: producer Denise DuBarry, a Hollywood star, and local Valley resident had the passion, skill, and acting talent to gather up the many loose production threads involved in a film project that long time Hollywood television director and friend

The brand new renovations greatly improve the look and updates to everything, sound

system, screen, stage and seats. The Opening-night film, The Sense of an Ending, was shown to a sold-out crowd. All ticket holders were treated to an extravagant after party at the Palm Springs Art Museum in the main lobby area. It was a bit hard to get

to where you could park because of the Thursday Night downtown festival. There was Valet and self-parking so everyone could arrive in style. Hundreds of guests filled the area. There were really short lines for food and drinks because of the many food stations scattered all over. The main buffet areas held salads, pasta, breads, and roast beef sliced to each persons liking. Drink stations were positioned at different areas and there were waitresses to take your order if you were seated.

The Annual Variety Luncheon Story and Photo by Pat Krause The yearly Variety Luncheon celebrated its 20th Creative Impact Awards and 10 directors to Watch event at the Parker Palm Springs Hotel on Tuesday Jan 3rd. The honorees were Viggo Mortensen for his acting in Captain Fantastic and given the Creative Impact Award and presented by the Director of the movie, Matt Ross; Jeff Nichols was given the Creative Impact Award for Directing for his movie, Loving, and presented by actress, Ruth Negga. Singer and now turned producer, Pharrell Willams, was given the Creative Impact in Producing Award. Williams was presented his award by singer/actress Janelle Monae and actor Jim Parsons. The Awards are presented by Mercedes Benz that celebrates the filmmakers and actors who have shown great contributions to cinema and the entertainment industry with their art. Other celebrities made an appearance on the Red Carpet that included Jane Lynch, Udo Kier, Fred, the Hammer, Williamson, Mayor Moon and Michael Dante, PSIFF Artistic Director, Michael Lerman, and members of Variety. Producers, directors, actors and PSIFF staff were all busy talking about the openingnight film or the progress that has been made with the PSIFf over the years. Producers and directors were busy doing interviews and talking to people interested in their movie. Many of the PSIFF film makers were present to talk about their soon to be shown films and contact

others for future projects. My favorite was the dessert bar where you could have your choice of the huge varieties of sweets. Chocolatedipped strawberries, tarts, cookies and bars to name just a few goodies. Those that were busy talking were also treated to very tasty appetizers. Waiters walked around with trays of food. There was little that was overlooked to make guests of the PSIFF feel welcomed and thanked for attending.

Strategies to Preserve Retirement Savings

By Janice Gough Leaving retirement savings in your past employer’s plan can limit your choice of investments and limit your beneficiary’s choices for distribution of the proceeds. The main reason to move your money to an Individual Retirement is to provide beneficiaries with more options, stagger out taxation of distributions and grant better options for liquidation. The 401K umbrella of investment choices usually offers a menu of mutual funds; however, the safe investment choices,

Other investments which may not be included are risk products, such as individual stocks and bonds, ETFs (exchangetraded funds), traded funds), and using alternative investments. Liquidation of numerous investments left to heirs in the 401K can require a lot of work, because each investment will require its own liquidation. Qualified plans (such as 401(k) s and profit-sharing plans are subject to a different set of rules that do not allow the funds to be distributed over time. As a result, when your 401(k) is inherited, the funds will usually be distributed immediately in a single lump-sum payment, resulting in an instant tax liability to the beneficiary. This could result as an increase in all of your taxes if the income received; boost you to a higher tax bracket. Further, if the estate is the beneficiary of an inherited qualified plan (401(k)), you lose the option of rolling the funds into an inherited IRA in order to maximize the tax-deferral potential. Failing to name a beneficiary will cause benefits to be paid out to your estate upon death—which will cause a loss of the taxdeferral benefits that can otherwise be realized with an inherited IRA. This is

retirement accounts that they have inherited, when it comes to maximizing the taxdeferral benefits associated with inherited accounts, knowing the rules of the game is key to avoiding a major tax hit when these accounts change hands. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to stretch the tax benefits of these retirement plan dollars into the next generation,

A Few Minutes About Minutes By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. Dear Kelly: Our president has delegated our property manager to run our homeowners meetings and he acts like the board works for him and has to agree with everything he proposes. He gets rude and obnoxious when the board does not agree with him. He takes the minutes, and changes the meetings minutes to show his point of view. I would like to tape the meetings to show what the board actually voted on and not what he wrote in the minutes. He says it is illegal for the board to tape the board meetings. Is this true? I can’t believe it is illegal to tape minutes if everyone knows that you are taping the board meetings. J.M., Fullerton Dear J.M.: Minutes are the official record of what decisions the corporation made through its board, and it is therefore

because the favorable rules that allow the account value to be distributed over time, only apply if the account’s designated beneficiary is an individual or a trust. There must be a life expectancy. Though the inherited—or “stretch”—IRA beneficiaries may stretch the tax-deferral benefits associated with these accounts for years after the original owner’s death. Generation skipping beneficiary designations may stretch payout even longer. Typically, the account beneficiary will take distributions over his or her lifetime or exhaust the account funds within five years of the original owner’s death, which allows the account value to continue to grow and stretches the tax liability that accompanies the distributions over a period of years. The rollover must be accomplished through a trustee-to-trustee transfer whereby the 401(k) plan administrator transfers the funds directly into a new IRA account that only holds the inherited 401(k) funds. In the inherited retirement account arena, how beneficiary designations are stated is critical to a successful transfer of the account to the next generation. Important to note, the account’s beneficiary designation trumps even the client’s will in determining who will inherit the account, While most beneficiaries cannot control the type of

of vital importance that they be accurate. Minutes are prepared at the direction of the board, and the board can at any time change who takes minutes of the meetings. If the minutes are inaccurate, the board should not approve them until the errors are corrected. Minutes should record which directors attended, list what reports were received, and what motions were made (and what was the outcome of each). If minutes are properly concise, there should be no need to tape meetings. If the problem is so bad that recording meetings seems necessary, the board has incorrectly handled this issue, but it is not illegal to record meetings or conversations if the participants all consent to it. Penal Code 632 prohibits recording of private meetings without the consent of all participating. Some colleagues have opined that HOA meetings are “public” because they are “open,” but I think they are wrong – the meetings are not open to the public, but January 11, 2017

only to members. Regardless of legality, recording meetings should be banned. Having an audio or video recording of a meeting can be intimidating to directors. I have attended meetings where homeowners shoved camcorders in the board’s faces as they interrupted the meeting, asking out of order questions. Associations should all have reasonable meeting rules which should ban any unofficial recording of meetings. As to the president’s misbehavior, the president serves at the will of the board – the board should vote for a different president. Thanks, Kelly Hi Kelly: As to actions taken, should the voters for and against be identified in the minutes? No executive session was held [last month]. Should this fact be mentioned in the next minutes? P.S., Pasadena Dear P.S.: No, only the number of votes – “3 yes, 1 no,

but careful planning is necessary to ensure that account doesn’t end up taking a tax hit instead. Janice Gough is a Financial Planner in Palm Springs and specializes in retirement planning. You may contact her at janice@ goughinsurance.com or by calling (650) 200-8291, Complimentary, no-pressure review for first-time clients. 1 abstention,” should be recorded in the minutes. You would only indicate who voted which way if any director demanded a roll call vote. Here is how that would look - “Kelly moved to approve the widget contract. Second by Kevin. After discussion, motion passed 3-2. Kaitlin requested a roll call vote. Kelly, Kevin and Kaitlin voted yes, Karl and Kylie voted no.” As to executive session, the Open Meeting Act at Civil 4935(e) requires that “any matter discussed in executive session shall be generally noted” in the minutes of the next open meeting. So, if no executive session occurred, there is nothing to note in the next open meeting minutes. Thanks for your questions, Kelly Kelly G. What to Know About Treating Common Illnesses

By Desert Star Staff For short-term conditions that come on quickly like the common cold, to chronic conditions such as arthritis or allergies, homeopathic medicines are among the safest types of drugs, say experts. “Homeopathic treatments offer another choice for those looking for low-risk overthe-counter options with natural active ingredients,” says Mark Land, president of the American Association of Homeopathic Pharmacists (AAHP), which represents the majority of the manufacturers, distributors and marketers of homeopathic products. While many may be unfamiliar with homeopathy, Land and the experts at AAHP offer some useful facts that could help you approach illness differently in the future. What is Homeopathy? Contrary to common belief, “homeopathy” is not a synonym for “natural” or “herbal supplement.” It’s a specific system of medicine that uses high dilutions of plants, animals or minerals to relieve the same

symptoms that they can cause at full strength. For example, a micro-dose of a coffee bean can help alleviate nervousness. The medicines’ health claims are based on traditional uses of these 200-yearold active ingredients. Given their long history, the products are not evaluated through the Food and Drug Administration’s new drug approval process. However, the agency oversees their manufacturing and marketing. Safety Benefits: Amassing a long record of safety, these traditional homeopathic remedies demonstrate very little possibility of adverse events. In 2015, the America Association of Poison Controls Center prepared a report for AAHP. It showed less than one percent of all pharmaceutical reports to the nationwide network involved homeopathic medicine. For the $1.2 billion homeopathic industry, this is proportionally below the rate of its market share of nonprescription drugs in general. Generally, homeopathic

preparations have very low risk of side effects, overdose, or interaction with conventional medications or herbal remedies, according to the AAHP. They also don’t mask or suppress symptoms, which is helpful in the case of misdiagnoses. Where Can You Find It? Local health food stores provide an abundance of homeopathic choices for a

wide variety of conditions, while national retailers, including drugstores, offer popular top sellers. Prices are competitive with their conventional counterparts. What to Look For? Product labels provide familiar drug information, including what the item treats and instructions for use. The active ingredients are Latin for their source and are

followed by a dilution level. For more information about homeopathy, visit aahp.info/ consumer-information. The next time you are under the weather, consider a homeopathic remedy. Due to the safety features, these therapeutic options are ideal as a first-sign-of-symptom defense before a condition escalates. StatePoint

California. Now, they’re making the same appeal to Congress. Mike Odeh, director of health policy for Children Now, says kids are particularly at risk when they, or their parents, don’t have health coverage, and the state needs to be prepared for whatever happens. “It’s important that any changes are done intentionally and responsibly,” he said. “Over 60 percent of California kids rely on MediCal and Covered California for their coverage, so any changes that happen could have a ripple effect throughout the entire system.” Odeh says their ultimate message is that healthy children become more productive adults, with studies showing them more likely to graduate, go to college and even earn more money. Last week, Republicans introduced a budget resolution that includes instructions for repealing major parts of the Affordable Care Act.

Edwin Park, vice president for health policy at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, says the major concern is that there’s little in place to replace the embattled healthcare program, which might throw the healthcare and insurance industries into turmoil if the repeal is sudden. “The most critical aspect is that there is no replacement plan, that replacement would happen at some

subsequent point, assuming there even is a replacement plan,” he explained. A report by the Urban Institute suggests repealing even portions of the law will leave almost five million Californians without health insurance. Over a ten-year period, it says the state could also lose more than $160 million in federal funding for health coverage.

Clean-Air Advocates Oppose Trump’s Pick to Head EPA

By Desert Star Staff HARRISBURG, Pa. – A group of clean-air advocates is running a series of television ads in seven states opposing president-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to head the EPA. Clean Air Moms Action says Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt has a long history of opposing clean air and water standards that protect American families from dangerous pollutants. Gretchen Dahlkemper, director of the group, points out that Pruitt has sued the EPA multiple times, challenging the Clean Power Plan, regulations to reduce methane emissions and more. “These include standards for reducing soot and smog pollution,” she said. “This

includes trying to repeal protections against emissions of mercury, arsenic, acid gasses and other toxic pollutants from power plants.” Pruitt’s supporters say he would continue to protect clean air and water while rolling back unnecessary regulations that hamper business and cost jobs. But Dahlkemper maintains that the regulations he has been challenging still are necessary. She notes that in Pennsylvania alone last year, more than 80 waterways had advisories against eating fish caught there because of high levels of mercury. “We need to continue to address these issues,” continued. “Childhood asthma is on the rise. We

lungs of our small children here in Pennsylvania.” As of Monday, the Senate

Association, says these political maneuvers will put the health of at least a half million Mainers, both young and old, at risk. “There’s a process in place where federal agencies are staffed by qualified people, they look at the best science, and they put these measures in place to protect our health; and Congress is trying to roll that back,” he said. “The efforts in Congress put public health at risk.” Supporters argue that the legislation would make it easier to dispense with regulations that some lawmakers believe are unnecessary, improving accountability and transparency. Boucher says rolling back Clean Air Act regulations could mean a trip to the emergency room on a bad-air day, for any of the 25,000 children in Maine who suffer from asthma. Former EPA administrator Carol Browner says Congress clearly is aiming to repeal

hundreds of existing protections, including parts of the Clean Air Act. “They’re doing it in a way that’s hard to follow,” she said. “It’s hard for the public to really see what’s happening, and I think that’s intentional, because people like clean air and clean water. They don’t want those safeguards rolled back, even if Congress wants them rolled back.” Boucher says two vulnerable populations in Maine have the most to lose if Congress goes ahead with plans to gut the Clean Air Act. “It’s about 261,000 children and 235,000 older Mainers that would be impacted by these efforts to weaken regulations,” he explained. A confirmation hearing is yet to be scheduled for Scott Pruitt, President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to lead the Environmental Protection Agency.

“We have enough supply to meet our demands during the next three years if the next three years are extremely dry,” says Evans adding water waste fines are still in place and the state has made those permanent laws. The goal: Californians

change their relationship with water. “Conservation needs to be apart of the way we think going forward it needs to be a long term effort there needs to be permanent change,” says Evans. Source: KMIR

Congressional Maneuvers Cause Clean-Air “Concerns”

Advocates say new moves in Congress could “adversely” impact the health of a half-million Mainers. (Dori/Wikimedia). By Desert Star Staff AUGUSTA, Maine – The new Congress already is working behind closed doors to roll back major public safeguards, that’s the word from health and environmental watchdogs.

Just last week, the House passed the Midnight Rule Relief Act which could eliminate any rule finalized in the last several months of the Obama administration with a single vote. Another measure, the REINS Act,

would require any new regulations be approved by the House of Representatives in order to take effect. Lance Boucher, the director of public policy for Maine and New Hampshire with the American Lung

By Kitty Alvarado COACHELLA VALLEY - Several storms are expected to hit the state and bring a lot of rain. Meteorologist Ginger Jeffries says the first storm will hit this weekend and it will also bring lots of snow, “There’s a lot of moisture that’s feeding in called the Pineapple Express from Hawaii but then there’s a lot of cold air that’s plunging down from the Gulf of Alaska when those two things combine well clearly you get a lot of snow they just picked up about six to eight inches of snow last week and now they’re going to put about three to six feet on top of that so this is a good start

to an already wet winter.” And while the desert won’t see a bulk of the storms, the Coachella Valley Water District says the desert will benefit from the much needed rain and snow. “Water that’s available in Northern California results in an allocation to us here in Southern California so a very, very dry winter would mean we wouldn’t get the water supply that we’re normally allotted a nice wet winter means that we will get supplies that we import from other areas,” says Katie Evans, CVWD’s conservation manager. Thirty percent of the state’s water comes from the snowpack which recently

measured below average and experts say a few storms won’t take California out of a multi-year drought but it’s a good start. “A lot of us are really optimistic we know there’s a lot of weather happening in Northern California and we’re hopeful that will result in a heavy snowpack which is great for our water supply throughout the year, with that being said we’re still preparing, we’re still in an emergency drought situation as declared by the governor.” says Evans. The State Water Resources Control Board recently removed the valley’s water cutback mandates.

Steelers assistant coach accused of assault hours after win

By Joe Mandak PITTSBURGH - Former Pro Bowl linebacker and current Pittsburgh Steelers assistant coach Joey Porter was charged early Monday with assaulting a doorman at a bar and a police officer who intervened hours after the team’s wild card win over the Miami Dolphins. The altercation happened at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, following the Steelers’ 3012 home victory over the Dolphins in the opening round of the NFL playoffs. According to a criminal complaint, officer Paul Abel was working security at another nearby bar when he was told by an off-duty officer that the doorman at The Flats on Carson Street was being threatened by a Steeler. Abel said he arrived to find the doorman refusing to let Porter - who appeared to be intoxicated - into the club. “Last time you were here, you threatened to kill me,” Abel overheard the doorman saying

to Porter. “You need to leave. You are not getting in.” Police didn’t immediately explain the context of the remark, but online court records don’t show any charges relating to such an incident. Abel, the 5-foot-6, 145-pound officer who filed the complaint, said Porter, 6-foot-3 and 260 pounds, ignored him when he asked what was going on and grabbed him by the arms and lifted him off the ground. The doorman, described as 6-foot and 195 pounds, wasn’t aggressive with Porter and had his hands in his pockets, according to the complaint. Abel said he pulled Porter away from the doorman, according to the complaint. That’s when Porter grabbed the officer’s wrists “so tightly that I could not pull them away from him, no matter how hard I tried,” the officers said in the complaint. Porter backed away but then refused to put his

hands behind his back. Porter eventually allowed himself to be handcuffed but yelled, “You’re lying, I never touched you,” as Abel arrested him, the complaint said. Porter was charged with aggravated assault on the officer, simple assault on the doorman, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, defiant trespass and public drunkenness. Physical contact with a police officer is automatically charged as aggravated assault in Pennsylvania, even if the nature of the alleged conduct would constitute simple assault against a regular citizen. Online court records don’t list an attorney for Porter, who posted $25,000 bond and faces a preliminary hearing Jan. 19 in Pittsburgh City Court. The Steelers said in a statement that they were aware of the incident and were gathering additional information. Porter, the Steelers’ outside linebackers coach, spent 13

Daniel Belle “An Unexpected Song” By Desert Star Staff Palm Desert, CA. - Former member of Australia’s The TEN Tenors, Daniel Belle makes his anticipated U.S. solo concert debut at the McCallum Theatre on Friday, January 20, at 8:00pm. One of the most elegant and powerful tenor voices of his generation, Daniel presents a program representing the twists and turns of his career from pop to Broadway to opera. Titled “An Unexpected Song,” Daniel says his show is “simply put, an homage to beautiful songs.” The show is a collection of songs from music throughout his career. “I’ve had the great fortune of being on many stages in Australia, in many different stylings. From that, I’ve hand-picked some of the most meaningful or beautiful pieces I know, from ‘Music of the Night’ from Phantom of the Opera, to ‘Soliloquy’ from Carousel and ‘Bring Him

Home’ from Les Miserables. There will also be pop songs from ‘Unchained Melody’ to Queen’s ‘Somebody to Love,’ and everyone’s favorite opera aria, ‘Nessun Dorma.’ They’ve all been lusciously arranged and I can’t wait to sing them.” Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Daniel’s passion for singing began at age 9 when he was a boy soprano who sang with his grandmother accompanying him at the piano. Daniel’s growing talent as a singer was evident when he was a finalist on “Australian Idol” when he was just 21. Joining Australia’s famed vocal group The TEN Tenors in 2012, Daniel toured the world, performing in Australia, Europe and the United States as part of the group’s “Double Platinum” tour, including the Tenors’ holiday show at the McCallum Theatre in December 2013. He also appeared on the

Tenors’ Christmas album, Our Christmas Wish, and the followup release, On Broadway. An accomplished musical theatre performer, Daniel was cast in Jerry Springer: The Opera at the Sydney Opera House in 2009, covering the role of Dwight/God. Since 2014, Daniel has toured Australia and Asia in the cast of Les Miserables, covering the role of Jean Valjean. He also played the role of Terry in the Australian premier of Side Show in Sydney in 2016. This past November, Daniel appeared in Les Miserables at the new Dubai Opera, the first time this iconic musical played in Dubai. Over his career, Daniel has performed at a number of significant occasions and has been in demand as a performer for numerous large sporting events. He performed at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney. He also performed at Australia’s Rugby

Union’s Bledisloe Cup, the Lion’s Tour, the International One Day Cricket finals and the Australian Swimming Championships. In 2008, he was a guest performer for the arrival of the Pope in Sydney. Accomplished in both theatre and vocal performance, Daniel’s versatility has seen him cross the breadth of contemporary music, cabaret, musical theatre and opera. Daniel can also be found in the recording studio, having collaborated with, and produced for, other artists. In addition, Daniel was a finalist for both The Rob Guest Endowment and The Joan Sutherland Scholarship. Daniel is delighted to be back on the McCallum stage and, as he says, “I’m so excited to bring to you a wonderful night of beautiful songs and music in my U.S. concert debut at the McCallum.”

the theatre’s first Luminary Luncheon of 2017. This special luncheon, which is open to the public, is part of CVRep’s series of Luminary Luncheons and will be held on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at noon at the Agua

Caliente Casino Resort, 32250 Bob Hope Dr, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270. Loretta Swit was born in Passaic, New Jersey, and began performing on stage regularly by the time she turned seven. She later trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and, thanks to her comedic talent, began to work professionally at a young age. After appearing in plays and musicals such as Any Wednesday, The Odd Couple and Mame, Swit found herself in Hollywood and in guest roles on nowclassic television shows including Gunsmoke, Mission: Impossible, Hawaii Five-O (the original!) and Mannix. With barely two years of TV acting under her belt, she was cast in the iconic role of “Major Margaret ‘Hot Lips’ Houhlihan” in the TV adaptation of M*A*S*H. During the series’ 11 seasons, beginning in 1972, Ms. Swit was Emmynominated almost every year and won two Emmys January 11, 2017

for her work on the show. In the years since M*A*S*H concluded Ms. Swit has been a guest star on everything from Love Boat to Murder, She Wrote and Diagnosis Murder, with many a TV movie in between. She has also found time to make her Broadway debuts in straight plays and musicals alike, and won a Sarah Siddons Award for starring in the play Shirley Valentine for almost three years in Chicago. Although known to millions all over the world for her work on stage and screen, Ms. Swit has also been painting since she was six-years-old, and is known in the field of fine arts primarily for her watercolor portraits of animals. A collection of Ms. Swit’s watercolors have been compiled into a new book entitled SwitHeart: The Watercolour Artistry & Animal Activism of Loretta Swit. It is no surprise then that she has devoted decades to animal-related causes and is a strong advocate

for animals and animal rights. In September, she was awarded the 2016 Global Wildlife Conservation Champion Award by the GES Africa Conservation Fund for her support of animal conservation; in December, she accepted a Betty White Award from Actors and Others for Animals, their highest honor, “for all she has done to protect and care for animals”. CVRep’s Luminary Luncheon with Loretta Swit will be held on Wednesday, January 18, 2017, at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa, 32250 Bob Hope Drive, Rancho Mirage. The luncheon begins at noon with the doors opening at 11:30AM, and will be followed by an Actors Studio-style interview and Q&A with Ms. Swit, who will also sign copies of the new book of her work. Tickets are $45, and reservations are required as seating is limited. For tickets call the CVRep Box Office at 760-296-2966 or visit our website at www.cvrep.org.

‘Hansel and Gretel’ the Musical and More 2017 Family Fun Fare

2017 has arrived, and already one week has passed by. Let’s hope it doesn’t slip away as quickly as 2016 did. But no matter how fast time flies; it’s always fun to spend quality time with the family, so here are a few entertaining suggestions for the new year “Hansel and Gretel” an all-ages rock-musical, is a wickedly delicious treat for the whole family with music and lyrics by Grammynominated children’s music artist Justin Roberts, book by Ernie Nolan, animations by Micah Chambers-Goldberg and 3-D animations by Gaspard Lacroix. The show will be performed at the Valley Performing Arts Center (VPAC) for one afternoon show only on Sunday, January 22nd at 3 pm. According to Thor Steingraber, Valley Performing Arts Center’s executive director, ”Justin Roberts has adapted this Grimm’s fairy tale for a modern audience.

www.desertstarweekly.com

His message is resounding and positive, and his score is infectious. The animated backdrops by Micah Chambers-Goldberg are captivating, like a modern day “Fantasia,” backing a young, energetic cast of actors.” In the story, set in Germany’s Black Forest, young Hansel and his older sister Gretel set out on an icy adventure, hoping to find their missing mother. “The Grimm Brother’s Band” brings the story to life with a rock and roll score in an animated wonderland inspired by the whimsy of Lemony Snicket and Roald Dahl. The result is a sparkling tale of humor and heroism that’s anything but grim. Critics nationwide have praised Roberts’ sophistication and lyrical depth. In “USA Today” Cathy O’Connell called Roberts “the Paul McCartney of children’s music.” And “Chicago Tribune” critic Chris Jones

described the music as “...a great score, witty, melodic, varied and most important of all, fresh and alive.” This charming musical, directed by Michael Matthews, will be in town for one performance only, January 22nd, so get your tickets before the show moves on to theatres across the county. Tickets for “Hansel and Gretel” are available at the theatre box office, online at Valley Performing ArtsCenter. org or by calling (818) 6773000, The Valley Performing Arts Cener is located at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

This past Friday I finally caught up with the film, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” directed by Tim Burton. It came out much earlier in the year so it will probably be next out on DVD in the very near future. Based on a 2011 young adult novel by Ransom Riggs, the story

January 11, 2017

begins in the present, but morphs back in time to Sept. 3, 1943 during WW II. It begins when Jake Portman is a small boy living in Florida with his parents. He is very close to his grandfather (Terence Stamp) who regales the young boy with adventurous tales he insists are true. He also has pictures of the people he describes which he keeps in a small box. Then one night during an impending storm, Jake, now a teenager, decides to spend the night with his grandfather. However, he is told not to come because his grandfather is certain something bad is about to happen—, and it does. When Jake can’t find the old man, he goes outside and stumbles on him dead. The traumatic experience so upsets Jake, he is taken to a psychiatrist (Allison Janney) by his worried father. She urges them to go to Wales and visit Miss Peregrine’s Home, the place where his grandfather, as a young boy, was sent during the war. The story is rather convoluted, and shifts back and forth through time. It is also too intense for very young viewers. However, teens, familiar with the book, will find Tim Burton’s take on the strange happenings that take place in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children both exciting and deliciously weird. The exceptional children who dwell there includes an invisible boy, Olive, a girl who can generate fire through

her fingers and Bronwyn, a youngster with superhuman strength. The prettiest girl is a blonde who wears weighted shoes to keep her from floating off into the air, and there is a young man who is able to reanimate the dead. Add to the mix horrible monsters controlled by a very creepy Samuel L. Jackson with white opaque eyes who has been stalking Jake’s grandfather and “peculiar” children through time and space. Personally, I found myself getting lost in the plot details, but basically, I understood the outcome. Director Tim Burton creates some truly peculiar “peculiar children” and some pretty scary monsters. He is in his element. The story is best suited for teens and is rated PG-13 for frightening scenes of peril and violence. Young fans of the novel should be on the lookout for the film when it arrives on DVD.

••••••••••••••

DVD Update: Check out the playful “Finding Dory.” Other animated Disney films available on DVD include the truly clever and hilarious “Zootopia,” “The Jungle Book,” and “Pete’s Dragon.” Two other animated films now out on DVD are “The Secret Life of Pets” and “Storks.” For the adults, “The Accountant,” an action-packed thriller starring Ben Affleck, J.K. Simmons and Anna Kendrick will be available on Blu-ray January 10 from Warner Bros.

By Desert Star Staff SAN DIEGO -- Animal welfare advocates are calling for full public access to the official cause-of-death report in the passing of one of SeaWorld’s oldest and most infamous orca whales, Tilikum, who died on Friday. Over the years, Tilikum was linked to the deaths of two trainers and one trespasser, and his life in captivity was the subject of the controversial 2013 documentary, “Blackfish”. SeaWorld said he had been ailing, but Dr. Naomi Rose, an orca biologist with the Animal Welfare Institute, said Tilikum’s life in a tank was doomed long ago. “Tilikum has been dying, if you will, for quite some time years really, when you look at it that way,” Rose said. “He’s

definitely broken some records in terms of longevity in captivity. And so, in one sense, it should have been totally expected, but still was a shock.” A statement from SeaWorld said, “Tilikum passed away ... surrounded by the trainers, care staff and veterinarians that provided him aroundthe-clock, world-class care.” But Rose said no amount of care could make up for the animal being kept in a facility only a fraction of his natural habitat. Orcas in the wild often live to age 70; Tilikum, who lived longer than many in captivity, was only around 36. Rose said orcas and certain other large, wideranging carnivores - such as polar bears and big cats - are ill-suited to captivity. She said the natural pattern

The “company” used their own costumes, props, from their garages and any loose change found in their old clothing and donated it all to the making of the film. It’s harmful to them physically, and it’s harmful to them psychologically.” Rose said that one of Tilikum’s lasting legacies is that trainers no longer do “water work,” that is, they don’t get into the water with the orcas. But she said she would like to see a paradigm shift away from treating these complex and majestic creatures like circus acts. “Public display of these animals, keeping them in captivity, is part of the problem, not the solution, January 11, 2017

Captain Fantastic - Viggo Mortensen “Sticks it to the Man” By Jackie Devereaux PALM SPRINGS, CA.– The indie movie, CAPTAIN FANTASTIC, delivers on all cylinders. From the first scene to the last, you’re riveted to your seat. A young boy hunts and kills a wild buck deer with his bare hands. His proud father paints the blood on his face and awards him the choice heart to eat raw as his five younger siblings look on. From his first bite to the last silent scene the viewer is catapulted into an intensely, divided world where all our self-prescribed illusions about parenting are shattered like glass, and the reality of this off-grid father’s boot camp for home schooling becomes forever etched on your soul. In CAPTAIN FANTASTIC, Ben Cash, played by actor Viggo Mortensen, is raising his six children in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest with his wife who grows ill from bipolar disorder and commits suicide. She shared his beliefs that raising their children off-grid and devoid from the so-called “real world” would create six amazing adults. However, Ben’s rigorous home schooling coupled with strenuous physical training, such as climbing steep cliff

faces, puts the children through rigors that most adults would find impossible, and some argue, is immoral. “No one is going to come and rescue you!” Ben yells to his youngest son dangling from ropes against a cliff, suffering with a bad hand sprain due to a fall. “It’s up to you!” Those are the kinds of harsh sentiments Ben shares that separates him from the norm of what Americans deem as good parents. Throughout the movie, Ben pushes his children to learn more, to press harder, to question authority, “to stick it to the man,” - to become free thinkers. This movie is one of the best movies I have ever seen because it hits you on all cylinders. You question yourself; you question society; you question morality; and you scratch your head for days wondering: “Have I been a good parent?” This movie should be nominated for several awards because it’s simply that good. Movies are supposed challenge us, as well as entertain us. This one does both, and so much more. Mortensen’s intense, inyour-face performance keeps the ensemble cast moving fast as the family drives from Washington to New Mexico

to attend their mother’s funeral. Their journey is one of renunciation between the two opposing worlds, and the clash of titans takes place at their mother’s funeral. Mortensen flew in from Madrid, Spain to attend the festival not only to receive a Variety award but to participate in an intimate Q&A session following the Tuesday night screening at the Annenberg Theater inside the Palm Springs Art Museum. He shared about an hour of intimate thoughts about the movie, about filmmaking, and his 35-year career. “This is one of those movies of our times,” Mortensen said. “It’s not a message movie. There are no villains and no heroes here. Is this father a menace to his kids in forcing them into a harsh boot camp every day of the week?” he asks. “The father doesn’t modify his language when his speaks to the any of the children about sex, death, rape,” politics or their mother’s death. His singlemindedness about speaking the truth no matter how painful, stretches our comfort zone about good parenting. Mortensen’s read thousands of scripts, and this script, written and directed

director Matt Ross and actor Viggo Mortensen. Photo by Pat Krause by Matt Ross, “was very well written.” When I asked what makes a script well-written, he said: “There’s a lot said about no new stories out there, and that may be true, but there is new talent.” “Some writers fail to deliver on the structure, some fail on the premise while others fail to tie the whole story together. Well structured, well ended stories are hard to write,” he said. When I asked how far he must read into a script before he knows a role is for him, he answered: “I usually give

it a 10 to 15 minute grace period. Then I ask myself: does this surprise me?” Mortensen admitted that he nearly turned down the role of Aragon in the Lord of the Rings trilogy out of fear because he didn’t know anything about the books, but luckily his son, Henry did, and urged his father to take the role which made him an international sensation. “You have to have fear, a good fear,” he added about accepting roles. “If I fear doing it, then that means, I probably should do it.”

King of the Belgians an Mockumentary wity a message

King of the Belgians. Photo by: Be for Films By Pamela Price When Harold Matzner, Chairman of the 28th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival announced there were “473 screenings of 192 films from 72 countries” I made an instant decision, regarding the one to screen. King of the Belgians, was my choice since I am a fan of ‘mockumentaries” a genre that triggers not only a few laughs but as it turns out in this one, a look at how tradition can transition to humor, in any

language. Here’s the plot, the somber King of Belgian is on an official ceremony to Turkey with protocol taking precedence, until a ‘solar storm’ interrupts the meeting of the King with Turkish government officials. The King, traveling with his entourage decides to escape because Wallonia, the Frenchspeaking region of Belgium has declared independence. How the Belgians escape with a producer of documentary films, Duncan

King of the Belgians. Photo by: Be for Films Lloyd, who turns out to be an excellent geographical strategist speeds up the plot. The Belgian delegation quickly departs from Istanbul disguised as female Bulgarian folk singers, with the press attache, personal valet and the King’s chief of protocol on a wacky trip back to Belgium which it turns out is a life-changing experience for King Nicholas III. The itinerary is totally unpredictable as the Belgian delegation ended up on various

means of transportation, including a ramshackle boat that ends up in the wrong direction finding anchor in Albania. The escape plan, ultimately works in favor of the King, who is exposed to the real world interfacing with rural people he otherwise would never have met. The satirical script, thanks to filmmakers Peter Bosens and Jessica Woolworth worked at several levels, as the main characters take the plot from a rather

uneventful ‘royal’ state visit to a Laurel and Hardy ‘esque’ adventure that changes the King from a very bland character to one better fit to reach out to the public realm. His Majesty, thanks to this comedy or errors emerged all the better for this disastrous, albeit hysterically funny journey between Turkey and Belgium. “The Salesman” – Iran’s Oscar Entry for Best Foreign Language Film

L-R: Shahab Hosseini as Emad discusses a scene with director/writer Asghar Farhadi. Photo courtesy of Amazon Studios & Cohen Media Group Anytime you see Cohen Media Group in the opening credits, you can be quite sure that you are about to see a quality foreign film. Among some of the films in this prolific group’s collection are: “Timbuktu,” “Marguerite,” (four César Awards) “Rams,” “Mustang,” “The People vs. Fritz Bauer,” “My Old Lady,” “Le Chef,” “Breathe In,” and the wonderful documentary, “Deli Man.” In keeping with their impeccable record of producing and/or distributing award-worthy movies comes “The Salesman,” Iran’s submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award. This powerful film has already racked up three wins and six nominations. “The Salesman,” brilliantly written and directed by Asghar Farhadi, stars Shahab Hosseini as Emad and Taraneh Alidoosti as his wife Rana who is an actress. Emad is a teacher and a member of the same

acting company. They are both in rehearsals for Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman.” The story opens with the imminent collapse of the apartment building in which they live, forcing all the tenants to evacuate immediately. The opening crack is symbolic of the ensuing tear in their relationship. Through a friend, they find another apartment, but discover that the last tenant had left all her belongings behind. Apparently, she had a lot of male “visitors,” and moved out rather suddenly. Emad and Rana go about removing her property to an outside shed with the hopes the elusive owner will return. All is well, for the moment at least. Emad is not home and Rana decides to take a shower. Just then the apartment bell rings and thinking it’s her husband, she hits the buzzer and leaves the front door ajar. What follows is a brutal attack, which thankfully the director spares

By Desert Star Staff Donald Trump has lashed out at Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep in a series of tweets, labeling the Hollywood actor “overrated” and a “Hillary flunky.” Streep strongly criticized the president-elect during an acceptance speech at the Golden Globes award ceremony on Sunday, slamming Trump’s apparent impression of a disabled reporter during his election campaign.“It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country, imitated a disabled reporter – someone he outranked in privilege, power and the

capacity to fight back,” Streep said, referring to Trump. Trump didn’t take this lying down, however, and on Monday tweeted: “Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn’t know me but attacked me last night at the Golden Globes. Trump didn’t stop there, adding that Streep is a “Hillary flunky who lost big,” as well as denying that he mocked a disabled reporter in the first place. Summing up his latest rant, he blamed the “dishonest media” for the reporting of his alleged impersonation.

us from witnessing. Rana is traumatized physically and emotionally and begins to have difficulty functioning. Emad wants to go to the police but Rana does not want to be put through the interrogation of what happened and would rather forget the whole episode. Reluctantly, although obsessed with finding the perpetrator, he begins to clean up the crime scene, getting rid of the blood and any other traces of the attack. His wife is badly bruised but tries to continue with the rehearsals. However, she goes up on her lines and walks out in the middle of a scene. She becomes more and more frightened and reclusive. Determined to track down his wife’s attacker, the haunting narrative takes an unexpected turn as the obsessed Emad systematically begins to assemble evidence, including an abandoned pick-up truck, and little by little hones in on the guilty

party. However, the more obsessed he becomes, the deeper the chasm in this once loving, happy relationship. The fascinating direction and impeccable writing, delicately illuminates the deconstruction of a marriage, Iran’s social mores as they pertain to women, and gives a one-two punch with the unexpected dénouement. The compelling story telling will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final scene. Coupled with the riveting performances given by Shahab Hosseini and Taraneh Alidoosti,

as well as the supporting cast, “The Salesman” is one film you will want to see before Oscar night. . Spectacular ‘lava firehose’ spews molten rock into ocean By Desert Star Staff Rarely is the awesome power of mother nature witnessed so spectacularly than in the form of this “lava firehose” – piping hot molten rock being expelled at high velocity from a volcano in Hawaii. A video released by Hawaii’s Volcanoes National Park Service at Kamokuna on January 9 shows a dazzling “lava firehose” shooting a relentless stream of the molten rock from deep inside the earth.Describing it as “surreal” and “unbelievable,” viewers have been left awestruck at the spectacular sight, with the video viewed almost 900,000 times so far on Facebook, amassing nearly 15,000 shares in the process. Some were glad to be watching the spectacle from the comfort of their own home. “You won’t catch me on that Lava Tour boat! That is way too close for comfort! That’s CRAZY,” commented one user, while another said they would “start worrying about the bottom of the boat melting.”It’s not

an entirely-rare occurrence, however, with visitors to the volcanic island usually able to marvel at lava flows from a designated viewing platform. However, footage of this latest phenomenon has emerged just days after a large section of a delta at Kamokuna collapsed into the sea, causing the tourist viewing area to be temporarily closed. A huge chunk of Hawaii’s famous Kamokuna lava delta collapsed into the ocean on New Year’s Eve. Twenty-two acres of the 26-acre ocean entry crashed into sea, taking the viewing platform along with it ‒ and was nearly disastrous for five tourists. The lava delta, which is within Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, began collapsing around 2pm local time on New Year’s Eve, causing an explosion of steam and a shower of volcanic rock to burst into the air. The hot lava meeting the cool water caused a highly corrosive plume of hydrochloric acid, resulting in the temporary closure of

airspace 1,000 feet above the island while the US National Park Service secured the region.”Fortunately, there were no aircraft or boats reported in the area at the time of the collapse, nor were any visitors on the delta itself, which is closed for public safety,” said Park Superintendent Cindy Orlando. “Had anyone been close by on land, water or air, lives

would have surely been lost,” she added.Rangers closed off access to the delta shortly after it began collapsing. However, at about 7pm five eager tourists ducked below caution tape and ignored warning signs to get a closer look at the coastal cliff.Rangers quickly spotted the daring group and chased them until they turned back from the edge, which crashed into the ocean

about 15 minutes later: “It was a really close brush with death for them,” said eruption crew ranger Travis Delimont. “Luckily, they finally listened to us and turned around in time.”Lava deltas are formed when lava hits the ocean and cools, forming fragments that eventually build into an unstable and hazardous surface.

Local High School Students Raise Funds for Fifteen Year Old Teen’s Funeral Expenses

By Tyler Harrison INDIO, Ca. - “I wish she would have given me a call that night,” said Angel Medina.

Just beyond the gates of Indio High School, a car wash was held for a student who is now gone, but not forgotten.

“She knew a lot of people, she made a lot of people smile with her beautiful smile,” Kimberly Arronize, an Indio

High School. “We just miss her a lot and wish that we would have known sooner and she still would have been with us.” Liz Castro Leon fell from the Jefferson overpass onto the 10 freeway on Wednesday. The circumstances around her death remain unconfirmed, her friends are struggling to understand. “There were many warning signs,” said Luis Chavez, a Shadow Hills High School student. “It is just shocking because I would never have expected it from her; I never thought she would do something like this.” KMIR News spoke with some of Liz’s cousins, who are still reeling from the loss. “She was bright. She was lovable.” said Adrian Rocha, Liz’s cousin. “Our last memory was

a beautiful memory,” Angel Medina recalled. Medina is also a cousin of Liz. “We were up at the spa just looking at the city lights, laughing and joking. Just beautiful.” A steady line of cars streamed into the car wash as drivers showed support and made donations for Liz’s funeral expenses. “To see a lot of people to have sympathy for someone, you know, to see a lot of people come out and support them because not a lot of people are like that, “ said Indio resident Damien Chaidez. Despite the pain many are feeling, Liz’s loved ones say she would want them to “live in her name.” “We’re doing this for her and do it proud,” said Rocha. Source: KMIR

Felix was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon and sentenced to two years in prison for a 2009 crime that originally drew an attempted murder charge but was pled down. He was also convicted of street gang activity.

After his release from state prison, he was accused of resisting arrest by Palm Springs police on the same street where he allegedly shot the three officers, who had responded to a domestic violence call. Court records also show that he was on probation at the time of the shooting for a misdemeanor driving under the influence conviction. MUSIC Don’t Forget These 2016 Gems BY ROBERT KINSLER

It would be criminal to bid a final farewell to 2016 without catching up on a handful of essential collections that came out last year. Artist: The Rolling Stones Title: Havana Moon (Eagle Rock) You might like if you enjoy: The Rolling Stones Tell me more: Watching the concert film or listening to the accompanying audio recording of the performance featured on The Rolling Stones’ “Havana Moon” is to be in awe. The Stones’ amazing return in 2016 included the release of the band’s terrific blues album “Blue & Lonesome,” as well as the legendary concert staged in Havana, Cuba on March 25, 2016 and now available commercially. Performing a free concert before a crowd estimated to be around a million, the Stones delivered a high-

powered 138-minute concert featuring stellar takes on most of the band’s biggest hits including “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Start Me Up,” “Miss You,” “Gimme Shelter,” “Brown Sugar” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Every fan of the band should get this release (available as a Blu-ray+2CD or DVD+2CD version). Information: eagle-rock.com. Artist: John Doe Title: The Westerner (Cool Rock Records) You might like if you enjoy: Dave Alvin, John Doe, The Doors Tell me more: Released in early 2016, John Doe’s aptly-titled “The Westerner” is an album that has continued to gain momentum as the months raced by. Recorded in Arizona, there is a spacious and rousing sound across the fast-moving disc. Highlights include the trainthemed twangy delight “Get

On Board,” rollicking “Go Baby Go” (featuring guest vocals from Debbie Harry of Blonide), the swirling acoustic nugget “Alone in Arizona” and rockabilly-tinged “My Darling, Blue Skies.” In addition to the aforementioned contributions from Harry, the album includes guest appearances from Chan Marshall of Cat Power and Cindy Wasserman of Dead Rock West. Doe has also received a Grammy nomination for Best Spoken Word Album for the audio book “Under the Big Black Sun: A Personal History Of L.A. Punk” (Penguin Random House). Looking ahead, area fans can catch Doe when he performs at the Stagecoach Festival in Indio on April 29, 2017. Information: TheJohnDoe.com. Artist: Jake Shimabukuro Title: Nashville Sessions (JS Records) You might like if you

enjoy: Laurence Juber, Jake Shimabukuro Tell me more: It is no exaggeration to note that Jake Shimabukuro has radically advanced the stature of the ukulele more than any player in the Hawaiian instrument’s history. Shimabukuro’s latest album, “Nashville Sessions,” finds the uke master and two of Nashville’s top session players (bassist Nolan Verner and drummer Evan Hutchings) delivering a thrilling master class in instrumental music crafted over a mere six day span. Standouts on the outstanding collection include the infectious rock foray “Man of Mud,” freewheeling jazz jam “Galloping Seahorses,” gentle “Ballad” and melodicallyrich “Celtic Tune.” It is the fusion of Shimabukuro’s virtuoso dexterity, melodic sense and the artful inclusion of electric sounds with the authentic ukulele itself that makes this recording

so special. Information: JakeShimabukuro.com. Artist: Davy Knowles Title: Three Miles From Avalon (WYAN) You might like if you enjoy: Jeff Healey, Rory Gallagher Tell me more: Fans of original and authentic modernday blues guitar will want to check out the latest album from singer-guitarist Davy Knowles. The guitarist shows off his solid fretwork across the new disc, including on the spirited rocker “Ain’t Much Of Nothin’,” soul-blues original “What You’re Made Of,” Chicago blues burner “Falling Apart,” the slide guitaranchored blues blaster “Never Gonna Be The Same” and ambitious title track. As if his guitar chops aren’t impressive enough, Knowles has a potent singing voice and writes songs that are compelling and authoritative. Information: DavyKnowles.com.

New Year, New You: What to Know Before Taking Vitamins or Supplements By Desert Star Staff As Americans look to improve their health in the new year, many will turn to vitamins and supplements as part of their healthier routines. However, experts stress the importance of understanding the potential interactions supplements can have with medications and some brands of medical test results. One notable example is Vitamin B7, also commonly known as biotin, which is frequently the top selling supplement online, and found in a number of multivitamins. Among its many benefits, biotin can help keep your

eyes, liver and nervous system healthy, as well as contribute to healthy skin, hair and nails. Some doctors are recommending using biotin to help with multiple sclerosis and diabetes, too. It’s important to research side effects or ask your doctor about them before taking any supplement. For example, while biotin supplements are not associated with any side effects, taking biotin can affect certain brands of blood test results, which can lead to a misdiagnosis or unnecessary treatments for heart disease, thyroid conditions, breast cancer, pregnancy and fertility. “If you take a multivitamin, biotin supplements or prenatal vitamins, be sure to talk to your doctor before your next blood test, so that he or she can ensure the lab uses a test that is not affected by biotin,” says Ramani Wonderling, PhD, associate director for scientific relations in diagnostics at Abbott, a global healthcare company.

Dr. Wonderling advises patients to ask their doctors the following questions. • Will the tests you order be impacted by my taking biotin? • I prefer not to stop taking my supplements. Can you use a blood test that is not impacted by my taking biotin supplements? Wonderling also advises that those who take supplements read labels carefully and do their own research about supplement brands, for optimum safety and health benefits. To learn more about supplements, biotin and blood tests, visit abbott.com/biotin. “Taking supplements can be an effective way to fill nutritional gaps,” says Wonderling. “But before embarking on a regimen, be sure you understand all the possible effects of each supplement you take.” StatePoint

Dylann Roof sentenced to death for killing 9 church members By Meg Kinnard And Jeffrey Collins CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Dylann Roof was sentenced to death Tuesday for killing nine black church members during Bible study in a racially motivated attack, the first person to face execution for federal hate crime convictions. A jury deliberated his sentence for about three hours, capping a trial in which Roof did not fight for his life or show any remorse. At the beginning of the trial, he addressed jurors directly, insisting that he wasn’t mentally ill, but he never asked them for forgiveness or mercy, or explained the crime. He threw away one last chance to plead for his life on Tuesday, telling jurors: “I still feel like I had to do it.” Every juror looked directly at Roof as he spoke for about five minutes. A few nodded as he reminded them that they said during jury selection they could fairly weigh the factors of his case. Only one of them, he noted, had to disagree to spare his life. “I have the right to ask you to give me a life sentence, but I’m not sure what good it would do anyway,” he said. When the verdict was read, he stood stoic and showed no emotion. He will be formally sentenced Wednesday. Roof told FBI agents when they arrested him a

day after the June 17, 2015, slayings that he wanted the shootings to bring back segregation or perhaps start a race war. Instead, the slayings had a unifying effect, as South Carolina removed the Confederate flag from its Statehouse for the first time in more than 50 years and other states followed suit, taking down Confederate banners and monuments. Roof had posed with the flag in photos. The attacker specifically picked out Emanuel AME Church, the South’s oldest black church, to carry out the cold, calculated slaughter, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Richardson said. The 12 people Roof targeted opened the door for a stranger with a smile, he said. Three people survived the attack. “They welcomed a 13th person that night ... with a kind word, a Bible, a handout and a chair,” Richardson said during his closing argument. “He had come with a hateful heart and a Glock .45.” The gunman sat with the Bible study group for about 45 minutes. During the final prayer - when everyone’s eyes were closed - he started firing. He stood over some of the fallen victims, shooting them again as they lay on the floor, Richardson said. The prosecutor reminded jurors about each one of

By Desert Star Staff Gun lobbyists are backing new legislation to make silencers easier to buy. Contrary to expectations the bill, which has the backing of Donald Trump, Jr, wouldn’t be fought as a Second Amendment issue but one of public safety. The bill, Hearing Protection Act, HR 367 argues that silencers safeguard the eardrums of the nation’s 55 million gun owners. It would remove restrictions on the purchase

of silencers for firearms under the National Firearms Act, and eliminate a $200 tax, lengthy paperwork and a ninemonth approval process. The bill was reintroduced in the House by Representative Jeff Duncan (R, South Carolina) and Representative John Carter (R, Texas). “I’ve been shooting since I was a young child – beginning with plinking with a .22 rifle and dove hunting with my Dad,” said Duncan in a statement, acknowledging his

AP Photo/Stephen B. Morton, File). FILE -In this Friday, June 19, 2015 file photo, the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. lead a crowd of people in prayer outside the Emanuel AME Church, after a memorial for the nine people killed by Dylann Roof the victims and the bloody scene that Roof left in the church’s lower level. The jury convicted him last month of all 33 federal charges he faced, including hate crimes. Roof did not explain his actions to jurors, saying only that “anyone who hates anything in their mind has a good reason for it.” Nearly two dozen friends and relatives of the victims testified during the sentencing phase of the trial. They shared cherished memories and

talked about a future without a mother, father, sister or brother. They shed tears, and their voices shook, but none of them said whether Roof should face the death penalty. Richardson recalled Jennifer Pinckney’s remarks about her husband, Clementa, who was remembered for singing goofy songs and watching cartoons with their young daughters in his spare time. After more than two hours of discussions, jurors re-watched a speech

by one of the victims, Clementa Pinckney, the church pastor and a state senator. In it, Pinckney talks about the history of Emanuel and its mission. Roof acted as his own attorney and did not question any witnesses or put up any evidence. The last person sent to federal death row was Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in 2015. hearing has been damaged because of gun noise over the years. “Had I had access to a suppressor, it may have protected me, as well as millions of other Americans, from this sort of hearing loss.” Silencers lower but do not silence the sound of a gunshot and are now being presented as safety devices in the new bill. Gun rights groups cite studies that show the silencers reduce the decibel level of a gunshot from a dangerous 165 to about 135, the sound of a

jackhammer, and they are rarely used in crimes.“It’s about safety,” Donald Trump, Jr, an avid hunter and backer of the bill said in September in a video with the founder of SilencerCo, a Utah silencer manufacturer, according to the Washington Post. “It’s a health issue, frankly.”The bill would make it easier for gun owners and sportsmen to purchase suppressors in the 42 states where they are currently legal. Purchases would have to pass a background check to buy them, and prohibited people would be denied. Violence prevention advocates are furious about presenting silences as a public health concern and argue the legislation would make it easier for criminals and potential mass shooters to obtain devices to conceal attacks. “They want the general public to think it’s about hearing aids or something,” Kristen Rand, legislative director of the Violence Policy Center told the Washington Post. “It’s both a silly and smart way to do it, I guess. But when the general public finds out what’s really happening,

there will be outrage.” Gun lobbyists supported a previous version of the bill but it stalled in Congress last year. It did generate tremendous interest, becoming the third-most viewed piece of legislation on the Congress’ website last year, according to the Library of Congress. With a Republican president, a strong advocate in Donald Trump, Jr, and Republicans in charge of the House and the Senate, the prospect of its passing are stronger. The NRA released the following statement on the bill: “Many gun owners and sportsmen suffer severe hearing loss after years of shooting, and yet the tool necessary to reduce such loss is onerously regulated and taxed. It doesn’t make any sense,” said Chris W. Cox, executive director, NRA-ILA. “The DuncanCarter Hearing Protection Act would allow people easier access to suppressors, which would help them to better protect their hearing.” The bill is currently waiting to be assigned to a committee.

Lawmakers Introduce Bill to Curb “Policing for Profit”

By Desert Star Staff OLYMPIA, Wash. – Law enforcement can seize the assets of Washingtonians who are simply suspected of a crime, but that could change in the 2017 legislative session. The bipartisan bill HB 1016 would prohibit law enforcement from seizing property from people who have not been found guilty and only would allow police to take assets directly involved in a criminal case. Rep. David Taylor, R-15th Dist., of southcentral Washington is leading efforts to change a law that has been profitable for police departments. “In national stories, a lot they call this ‘policing for profit,’ because they’re getting kickbacks,” he explained. “There’s an incentive to seize property without conviction. We’re trying to protect people’s individual rights under the Fourth Amendment for illegal search and seizures without conviction.” A study from the Institute

for Justice gave the Evergreen State a grade of ‘D-minus’ for its forfeiture laws. It found between 2001 and 2013, the state collected more than $108 million from forfeiture proceeds, 90 percent of which went to law enforcement. The bill will get a hearing in front of the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday. However, a loophole exists that could allow local and state law enforcement that partner with federal agencies on investigations to receive forfeiture proceeds even under the reformed law. According to the Institute for Justice study, Washington law agencies received more than $60 million between 2000 and 2013 from the Justice Department and Treasury Department from forfeitures for joint investigations. Taylor says he and his colleagues also want to close that loophole, with an amendment to the original bill so that property worth less than $50,000 can’t be seized. “Leave out the little

enough ventilation in the mine and there are extreme problems with what is typically called ground control, what citizens think of as ceilings collapsing and floors heaving,” he explained. Hancock notes that these problems have not been fixed, and just last November tens of tons of salt collapsed in one of the rooms being considered for future storage of radioactive waste. Governor Susana Martinez attended the ribbon cutting, noting that her administration secured a $74 million settlement from the Department of Energy after this incident. Much of the money went to maintaining the roads around the facility in Carlsbad and near Los

Watchdog Groups Call Reopening of Nuclear Waste Plant Premature

By Desert Star Staff CARLSBAD, N.M. – Nuclear watchdog groups are criticizing the decision to reopen the underground storage areas of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad, also known as WIPP, which closed after an accidental release of radioactive particles in February of 2014. In that incident, a drum of nuclear waste burst and contaminated the area, affecting 21 workers. Don Hancock, director of the nuclear waste program at the Southwest Research and Information Center in Albuquerque, says the decision to reopen the facility is premature. “The areas that they’re putting waste in is contaminated, there’s not

Alamos National Laboratory. Jay Coughlan, director of Nuclear Watch New Mexico, notes that the feds paid no fines after the spill. And he thinks the storage areas at WIPP are still dangerous for workers. “Operations at WIPP will remain significantly curtailed for the foreseeable future because of the contamination down there,” he said. “You know, workers are having to work in

full protective suits and things are just going to be slow.” The facility was built to accept what’s called transuranic waste, that is nuclear material that is a byproduct of man-made radioactive elements. Hancock says within the next month officials at WIPP will decide which nuclear sites will be allowed to start shipping waste into the facility, at the rate of up to five shipments a week.

Smart, sexy, film drama about love and life choices resonates

L-R Alfred Molina, Holly Hunter, Tony Shaloub By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic How many times have we all pondered those lamentable words, ‘If I had the chance to live my life all over again would I make the same choices?’ Maybe some of us would say yes. But that depends on your life passage and your age. But nevertheless, it’s still an intriguing thought for those in the audience inclined toward introspection in their own lives. For the others, well, let’s just sit back and enjoy life’s bumpy ride. “Breakable You”, cowritten with Fred Parnes and smartly directed by Andrew Wagner, is a sophisticated and wryly funny film, at times, and is best described as a poignant ‘dramaedy’ that centers around the dynamic Weller family on New York’s Upper West Side. If you’re a fan of Woody Allen’s films of his younger, creative period, then you’ll feel right at home with the milieu of bright, searchingfor-love, talented people, struggling in the environs of the upwardly- mobile world of New York professionals. Wagner’s story in short, revolves around Eleanor Weller a psychologist (insightfully

played by Holly Hunter) who is struggling to reinvent herself in middle age following a painful divorce, who has embarked on a uniquely complicated affair with her first love, Paul played by the great character actor Alfred Molina. However, the risk of starting over in the love game drives Eleanor to retreat into the renewed demands of motherhood. Her exhusband of 35 years, Adam Weller (masterfully portrayed by Tony Shaloub), is a oncerevered playwright whose star and inspiration have faded. Desperate to recapture his earlier glory, Adam makes an audacious, and for a playwright, a dangerous decision that imperils his moral center. Their daughter Maud (Cristin Milioti), a brilliant passionate and troubled philosophy student, initiates a sexually obsessive love affair with Samir (Omar Metwhally), a reclusive man haunted by tragic loss. That’s the drama part of this clever and engaging sophisticated film. The comedy part of “Breakable You”, lies in the terrifically executed performances and timing by the entire cast that in the theatre, would be

Omar Merwally and Cristin Miloti. called a brilliant ensemble cast effort. Solid support comes from Isabelle Candelier as Sandrine Bonhommet, Brooke Adams, Ken Yates, Peter O’Meara, and Barry Primus. The scenes set in the live theatre world of Broadway and actors, is almost too, on-thenosy, in its re-creation, (been there, done that). “Breakable You” is wonderfully captured by Director of Photography Harlan Bosmajian, especially in the literary world milieu of galleries and the cocktail parties. He provides the look and appeal that have been luring hopefuls to the glitter

and glamor of the Big Apple for decades. For all her beauty and excitement Manhattan and Broadway can be a cruel mistress if one is trying make it in the arts and entertainment field. They don’t call it the boulevard of broken dreams for nothing. On the west coast it’s called Sunset Boulevard. The on-screen chemistry between Ms. Hunter, Mr. Shaloub, Mr. Molina, and Ms. Milioti in their scenes has the ring of authenticity to the point that and we feel the need to toss atta boys and atta girls to the actors. However, if had to make a suggestion to Mr.

Wagner, about his well-done movie, it would come would come in the form of a long ago learned observation: Sex is not a spectator sport. We’re adults now, and we get it. Regardless of how delicately and tastefully you photographed (pun intended) those scenes, which you did indeed do, there are often times in movies and on the stage,AC where less is much stronger and better. N’cest Pas? “Breakable You”, should be a real winner with the art house crowd. Make sure you check it out when appears in your area.
