Murals Bring Splash of Color and Creativity to The Coachella Valley By Pamela Price You will see more dramatic, color-drenched murals in the Coachella Valley thanks to Pedro Salcido, Vice President of Coachella CV C.A.R.E. Corp., and

Daniel Sullivan, California Arts Council panelist. Artists Sullivan and Salcido met in 2007 with the intention of promoting their individual brands. Today, they share a commitment to

inspiring the youth in their community. Bold murals with a message have made an impact in the desert since the artists joined forces sharing a goal to “create their own organization at a

time when the art community needs it the most.” Since then, the ambitious duo commissioned many impressive large-scale murals while organizing CV C.A.R. E. Corp., which became an active 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization.

Olive Crest To Host Annual Golf Invitational By Madeline Zuckerman Child Abuse continues to occur at alarming rates in our community and across the country. Every 10 seconds in the U.S., a report of child abuse is made. And nearly five children die daily from abuse-related causes. Olive Crest, known for its dedication to preventing child abuse, treating and educating at-risk children and preserving the family. “One Life at a time®” will host its Annual Golf Invitational on Monday, February 7, 2022, at the Classic Club, located at 75-200 Classic Club Boulevard in Palm Desert, California. This event will raise much-needed funds to benefit local at-risk children and their families in Riverside County and the Desert Communities. USC Football Legend and Olive Crest Trustee, Darnell Bing, will serve as Event Chair once again. He will be joined by other USC football teammates who will support this worthwhile cause. “I am so impressed with the positive difference that Olive Crest makes for disadvantaged and at-risk kids,” stated Darnell Bing, Event Chair. “It was an easy decision to lead the golf tournament and work with my fellow USC teammates to fund critical programs for

children in our community.” Event registration will begin at 9:00 am for this highly-anticipated golf tournament, which will feature a Shotgun Scramble format, an Awards Reception, and Silent Auction featuring unique sports memorabilia and exclusive travel packages. A golf foursome is priced at $ 1,200, and Event Sponsorships range from $500 to $15,000. To register, go to www.olivecrest.org/ ie/golf-tournament-2022 “The idea for this Olive Crest Golf Invitational was the brainchild of one of our Olive Crest Trustees, Darnell Bing,” stated Walter Mueller, Director of Development for Olive Crest. “Darnell envisioned this event as a way to not only raise funds for at-risk and disadvantaged youth but also to bring visibility to the services and lifesaving programs Olive Crest offers. In addition, Darnell also wanted to include some of his former USC teammates in this event to introduce and educate them about the needs of youth within the foster care system. Having Darnell participate, as well as Chair this event, along with his fellow football legend teammates, makes this a very unique golfing experience and a win-win for

all the at-risk children within our community,” Mueller continued. Event Sponsors thus far include Toyota of Riverside, Kennedy Wilson Properties, and Holstrom, Block, and Parke. “The monies raised from this event will be utilized to support expanding services within both the Coachella Valley and throughout Riverside County, stated Tracy Fitzsimmons, Executive Director of Olive Crest Inland and Desert Communities. “Over the past year, our communities have seen a troubling rise in food scarcity, domestic violence,

unemployment, and need for mental health services. The Olive Crest team provides support in all of these areas. We must extend services wherever needed and ensure safe and loving homes for every child. That’s both our responsibility – – and a moral obligation. Last year, local funding supported services to over 2,600 children and families while working towards safe and loving homes for each child in our care. However, for every child with a place in a safe and loving home, nine children are still waiting! A safe

home, along with a loving family home, is precisely what breaks the cycle of hopelessness in children’s lives. Our vision of a strong family for every child means that every child would be raised and nurtured in a strong, stable, and loving family, surrounded by friends, church, and supportive community,” Fitzsimmons continued. Americans Would Pay a Heavy Price for Amnesty By Mark Thies Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill are scrambling to find a way to illegal amnesty immigrants in their nearly $2 trillion budget bill. The Senate parliamentarian, who decides what provisions can and can’t be included in the bill that’s being advanced under the filibuster-proof “reconciliation” process, shot down their first two proposals. So now, lawmakers are proceeding with “Plan C” -- which would grant illegal immigrants “parole,” a status that gives illegal immigrants work permits and a reprieve from deportation, without immediately granting them green cards. Lawmakers are also plotting to expand legal immigration levels. All told, their current plan would increase the number of immigrants living and working in this country by several million people at a minimum. Such rapid growth will put immense strain on our financial and natural resources, and the ensuing damage to our environment threatens to set progress there back by a generation or more. Our country is not

underpopulated by any reasonable reckoning. Schools are already overcrowded, especially for young children. California, for instance, would need to build a new school every day for five years to provide class sizes of 15-19 students. Over the next 50 years, immigration is set to account for 96% of the increase in school-age children. Mass migration is making life more difficult -- and expensive -- for workingclass citizens. Like everyone else, migrants need a roof over their heads -- so they compete against low-income Americans for our scarce supply of rental housing. Nationally, the median rent has surged over 16% since January, in part because of competition from new arrivals. Environmental groups pretend to be blissfully unaware that adding so many people to the population does irreparable harm to the environment. Transportation is another example: more people mean more cars, gas or electric, creating more traffic and more emissions (electric vehicles pollute too -- albeit at the January 12, 2022

power plant, rather than the tailpipe). More development requires clearing woods and fields to make way for pavement and parking lots. Federal data shows that around 90% of open space lost in the past decade -both urban and rural -- can be attributed to population growth. So yes, more and more of our unique outdoor heritage is being lost. This sprawl comes with serious environmental and health consequences, threatening wetlands critical for clean water and flood protection and harming endangered species. The American Southwest, in particular, faces a dystopian future of water shortages as its population skyrockets. Just above the Grand Canyon, Lake Powell is now

at 29% of capacity, an alltime low, an astounding 156 feet below total capacity. Poll after poll shows that amnesty is unpopular -- as we all see right before our very eyes that such an unsustainable flood of migrants is worsening the quality of life for all. The only question is whether our leaders will grow backbones before it’s too late. HOROSCOPES ARIES

It’s best to refrain from being out and about to much in the world. You will for a year experience the energies of Pisces, a noble sign, but ruled by Neptune which can make one feel at first a bit confused when in the midst of crowds for any length of time. It’s best to be more reflective, solitary, and around only a few people at a time who understand (astrology) and support your states of mind. Dreams and visions are important now. Do you have visions for the future and how/where do you see yourself in the coming year?

VIRGO Signs in opposition, like Virgo & Pisces, create an interplay of dark and light, up and down, here and there, until the two, frightened of each other, finally make peace, integrate and synthesize. All the sign must integrate. With so many planets in Capricorn, and Mercury and Venus retrograde, the possibility of following your heart’s desires is real. Virgo is the sign of service preparing for the saving quality in Pisces. You are to synthesize both now.

LIBRA You may feel exhausted when confronted with your usual work. And then you may feel a wounding difficult to express. There’s a purpose to that wounding, providing you with the ability to have compassion for and to heal others. However, you must come to a state of courage where you can clearly articulate your wound without judgment, blame and with dispassion. Wounds become life tools. They balance us. They love you. No matter what you think your financial situation is, there are realistic new resources and avenues available and seeking you. So you can rest easily and not enter into states of discomfort, fear, unease, unreality or feelings of lack. Nothing needs doing. You are supported by all the energies in the cosmos, the stars too. Turn to others and offer them this support. Your supply is limitless. The heart bridges. g

CAPRICORN You may be called to express yourself in ways that could change people’s belief systems. Unusually, you don’t like to shift people’s reality, always attempting a state of harmony, not causing chaos or conflict. You always express new ideas with compassion, clarity, sensitivity and kindness. This creates a heart to heart, mind to mind, Soul to Soul connection. It’s creates the “waters of life for thirsty humanity,” one person at a time. A new creative cycle begins for you late February.

I doing here, why am I here, what is here that supports me and where do I go from here?” Vital questions that means the Soul is nearby hovering over you. At times you wonder if there are enough resources to support your visions. You dream of home, family, art, community, seeking to do only what you love. Simultaneously, you serve others, supporting their well-being, security, and self-esteem. All that you offer is returned one-hundred-fold. And the questions are answered.

PISCES Jupiter is in your sign of the two fishes. All Pisces will enter deep within themselves, swimming around a bit in your own inner waters of life. This happens naturally with Neptune in Pisces, but with Jupiter there dreams and visions will multiply exponentially. Notice deeper introspections, thoughts on life and death and a refinement that takes place preparing you for greater accomplishments in the future. Your visions come into manifestation. Celebrating Column #600 and What HOA Homefront Is About

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL I’m excited to share the 600th column since “HOA Homefront” inaugurated in March 2005. Except for a hiatus in 2010 and 2011, the column has been published continuously for 17 years and now appears in most of the major paper and digital news publications in Southern California. I thank former real estate editor Harold Medina, who encouraged me to begin writing, suggesting the title “HOA Homefront.” There are several recurring themes in the column since its inception. First, is the importance of knowledge about the practical and legal complexities involved in operating common interest developments, also known as “HOAs.” The Davis

Stirling Common Interest Development Act, now 36 years old, has expanded dramatically in scope and complexity as the Legislature continues intervening in the governance and management of private communities. Properly run communities need knowledgeable volunteers and managers, and hopefully, this column has been helpful for the many millions living in California’s common interest communities. Another theme is the overriding reality that the homeowner association is not simply a legal or financial entity, or a piece of land. While all those characteristics are important, the salient focus always must be on the fact of community. The members are not just shareholders or voters, they are neighbors. So, the column continuously emphasizes neighborly behavior,

transparent governance, and civility above all. It may seem ironic coming from a career trial attorney, but another key theme has been the undesirability of litigation. I have never seen litigation accomplish peace in an association, but I have seen it tear apart communities financially and socially for years. I am proud that not once in these 600 columns have I recommended court action as the primary strategy - and I don’t intend to do so in the next 600 either! The importance of professional and credentialed management has been an enduring theme of this column since day one. When I began advising HOAs in 1989, I believed that associations of less than 100 members probably could handle their affairs without a hired manager. Today, 33 years later? I recommend management January 12, 2022

for the smallest HOAs. To the thousands of homeowners who have submitted reader questions in these 17 years, I apologize if your questions did not appear in a column. I keep all those questions - sometimes a six-year old question pairs up nicely with one from last month. I also greatly appreciate the kind words that so often begin your questions - I remove those comments not for ingratitude but for space reasons - 600 words only goes so far! To professional managers: Keep up the good work. Your job is difficult but essential. Be a credit to the profession and push for the highest performance, ethics, and excellence. Hang in there; we need you! To volunteer directors: Thanks for volunteering your time. Keep ethical, keep civil, and always remember

you are a servant not a boss of your community. Model excellent behavior and keep that standard high for all. To my readers: Thanks for your frequent encouragement and kind words. Support your board and manager and volunteer for service. Be part of the solution! Lastly, thanks to the many editors who reserve precious space in their publications each week for the column. Now, on to #601! Best regards, Kelly

FILM REVIEW

WITH LADY BEVERLY COHN

“Swan Song”- Benjamin Cleary’s Futuristic Love Story Starring Mahershala Ali “The best times to show true love are when it isn’t easy, and it requires personal sacrifice.” (Unknown)

“Love means that you care for another person’s happiness more than your own – no matter how painful the choices you face might be.” (Nicholas Sparks) I begin my review of SWAN SONG with quotations on love as Benjamin Cleary’s film is a sci-fi love story about a man’s ultimate sacrifice – that of turning over his body and soul to a brand new, healthier version of himself. The story begins with a flashback on a commuter train where Mahershala Ali’s character of Cameron Turner, is sitting across from a very beautiful young woman named Poppy, played by Naomie Harris. There is a chocolate candy bar resting on the table between them, which Cameron thinks is his, and each of them takes turns breaking off a tiny piece at a time. Finally, poppy disembarks at her stop, and Cameron discovers his own candy bar and is embarrassed that he was nibbling at hers. Now married to Poppy, the action cuts to the interior of Cameron’s bathroom, where he faints – one of many seizures that will eventually claim his life and ultimately set him on a quest to spare his family from a tragic loss. Our protagonist has heard about this Arrah House facility set deep in the woods where patients live out their final days Administered by Dr. Eve Scott, quietly but effectively played by Glenn Close, she and her colleagues have devised a method of creating a perfect replicant or clone who will

have complete conscious and unconscious memories transferred to its brain from the dying person His counterpart is named Jack, and the only distinguishing difference is Cameron has a small dark spot on one of his palms The caveat is the wife or family cannot know about the new, healthy version as that would negate the procedure Cameron is conflicted but knows he cannot tell his wife that he is dying To help him with his decision to proceed, Dr. Scott introduces him to Kate, nicely characterized by Awkwafina, who is in the final stages of her life They have long discussions overlooking the water in this wooded bucolic setting His seizures continue, and eventually, Cameron meets Jack, and they talk, and through the magic of filmmaking, we see them together discussing “their” lives His replicant knows everything about Cameron’s life with his wife, including her depression for the last year over the motorcycle death of her twin brother Rafa (Lee Shorten) He knows that she is pregnant and speaks French and uses music to teach children with learning disabilities The two men continue to bond, sharing meals together, but our dying character is not quite ready to say goodbye to his family and wants to visit them one more time to help him put closure on the inevitable As he approaches his home, another seizure incapacitates him, and he is quickly returned to the center by a waiting driverless car Dr. Scott thinks he’s ready for the final transfer, but her technician Dalton (Adam Beach) disagrees, so they compromise with a two-week trial period Jack goes to “his” home, and there is no suspicion from either his

Of course, there are moral and ethical questions regarding such a procedure, but first-time film director Cleary leaves that judgment up to the audience. He skillfully walks the tight rope of avoiding the slippery slope of melodrama that could have morphed into an overly sentimental family drama. Instead, he presents us with a quintessential love

story of sacrificing oneself for the good of the other Under his direction; he elicited a tourde-force performance from Mahershala Ali, who mined the subtleties of his character while Naomie Harris’ performance as Cameron’s wife is equally wellexecuted Close’s performance as the good doctor delivers an understated characterization and in an almost whisper, reminds the conflicted Cameron, “You are dying.” Technically, director of photography Masanobu Takayanagi’s camera moves us slowly through the action with Nathan Nugent’s editing sharply focusing the story Production Designer Annie Beauchamp is responsible for the overall look of the film, Visual Effects supervisor Ajoy Mani provides the fascinating futuristic components, with Jay Wadley’s music underscoring the ongoing action.

“SWAN SONG”* Distributor: Apple + Release Date: Current Where: In Select Theatres & Apple TV Language: English Genre: Sci-Fi Family Drama Running Time: 114 Minutes Rating: R *The term “Swan Song” originates from an ancient, but disproven legend, that while they are mute during their lifetimes, swans sing beautifully and mournfully just before they die. Actually, they have a variety of vocal sounds and don’t sing before they die. The phrase is found in the works of Plato, Aristotle, Euripides, Cicero, and Shakespeare, usually signifying the end of an event or a character.

Featuring music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, “West Side Story” is widely regarded as a a groundbreaking musical because of the creators’ advances in music as well as bringing a gritty realism to musical theater upon its release in the late 1950s. Vocals on the soundtrack are provided by the stars of the new film, including Ansel

Elgort, Rachael Zegler, Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist and Rita Morena — the latter who played Anita in the 1961 film adaption. The powerful on-screen performances by the cast translate well on the audio CD. Gustavo Dudamel conducted the New York Philharmonic Orchestra during 2019, with additional recording completed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The mix of jazz, Latin rhythms, classical orchestrations and broadway sensibilities is a delight across the soundtrack. at the 340-person capacity St. Louis venue Blueberry Hill between July 2005 and January 2006, Chuck Berry’s “Live from Blueberry Hill” is a wonderful way to rediscover the Father of Rock & Roll. There is a joyful spirit across this collection of live tracks (Berry passed away at the age of 90 in March 2017). The freewheeling “Roll Over Beethoven,” driving “Let It Rock” (featuring his daughter Ingrid Berry blasting away on harmonica), the spirited “Carol”/”Little Queenie” medley, rollicking “Around And Around” and disc-ending rocker “Johnny B. Branding Your Business By Janice Gough Many of us are re-starting our businesses, and along with that, we have had plenty of time to make changes. Many people are changing their careers entirely. You may have concerns about the new marketplace and how to approach it, and understanding potential clients’ needs. Your attention to specifics is what will differentiate your business. If you can clearly and succinctly communicate how you are different from others in your field, It will make it easier for your ideal client to find you and you to find them. Your unique perspective is your personal brand. Your brand is what makes you. It is why clients choose to work with you. When you first meet a prospective client, you must be prepared to grab their interest with a short dialog telling who you are and what services or products you offer. In sales, this is referred to as your “elevator” speech. (This term was created by a famous insurance agent who worked

in New York Life and met most of his prospective clients on the elevators.) You must be prepared to tell your story in a New York minute! You are providing a brief summary of what you do or can offer. By keeping your approach simple, straightforward, and easy to understand, you will gain their interests and, most likely, a new connection. Always close by asking for a time to meet. It will enable you to obtain their contact information and make you a more serious contender for their business. The following are ways to help you define your unique perspective and then package and communicate it to your potential clients and your existing client base. First, you must identify and explain what makes you different than your competition. Start by identifying your ideal client. What stage of life are they in. What is their average net worth? Where do they work? What industry do they represent? Where are they located? What is their position? By defining who your target market is, will provide clarity in developing your message.

The more precise and pinpointed you are, the easier you will get their attention. Consumers have gotten away from starting a business relationship, sometimes by seeing you in an expensive ad. However, there is nothing that can replace meeting someone personally. Inperson networking in social or professional events provides a greater possibility to connect for a business’s appointment. Using Social media to

connect can help to keep you fresh in their mind. Being a member of your business associate’s group and supporting your Chamber of Commerce can put you in front of many possible clients and referrals. It is time to re-boot your business, and when you are in front of a prospective client, being prepared will provide you with the most significant advantage. Therefore, the definition of

Success is Preparedness meeting opportunity. Janice Gough is a Business and Financial consultant in Palm Springs, located at 1111 E. Tahquitz Cyn. Way, Bldg. 120. California asks sick healthcare staff to come to work

By Desert Star Staff The new guidance comes after the state issued a wideranging vaccine mandate Less than a month after issuing a strict vaccine mandate for healthcare workers, the California Department of Public health is now calling on workers with Covid-19 to come to work regardless in a bid to cover staffing shortages. According to new guidelines issued by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) on Saturday, healthcare workers who test positive for Covid-19 will no longer have to isolate and can return to work immediately without a negative test, as long as they are not showing symptoms. In a statement to NBC News, the CDPH described the new guidance as a “temporary tool” to mitigate staffing shortages and the increased demand on healthcare providers due to a surge in Covid-19 cases. However, the CDPH added that hospitals should have workers with Covid-19 interact only with Covid-positive patients “to the extent possible.” Healthcare workers and their unions have fiercely criticized the new policy. “Healthcare workers and patients need the protection of clear rules guided by strong science. Allowing employers to bring back workers who may still be infectious is one www.desertstarweekly.com

of the worst ideas I have heard during this pandemic, and that’s really saying something,” Bob Schoonover of the California chapter of the SEIU trade union said. Furthermore, the CDPH’s guidance also applies to workers in nursing homes whose patients are most at risk of death from the virus. Nearly 10,000 residents of California nursing homes have died since the beginning of the pandemic, with deaths in these facilities accounting for 13% of the state’s total Covid death toll. Before clearing the sick to return to work, the CDPH asked hospitals to fire workers who wouldn’t get vaccinated or submit to twice-weekly testing. As of Friday, workers without a booster dose are considered of employees were fired less “Oh crap. At the same time, a vaccine refusing to get vaccinated. worker told the Providence mandate has been in place in California. AFTER UPDATING THE ORDER TO REQUIRE BOOSTER DOSES, the CDPH said that it is “not aware of another state with such comprehensive requirements” The Desert Star Weekly is one of the few adjudicated publications in the after updating the order to Coachella Valley, which means we are officially authorized to run legal require booster doses. Right-Wing Violence More Likely Close to Midterm Election

By Suzanne Potter As the midterm elections approach this fall, experts are warning political violence could flare up, not necessarily another attack on the Capitol, but outbursts based on state or local issues. A report from the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State San Bernardino found October 2018 -- right before the last www.desertstarweekly.com

midterm election -- was the second-worst month for hate crimes in the decade. Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University San Bernardino and a co-author of the study, said the lights are flashing yellow. “I know people are talking about civil war,” Levin acknowledged. “But what I’m more concerned about in

the short term is regionalized conflicts and aggressions which get punctuated by plots or mass attacks or even attempts to injure or kill public officials.” Levin pointed out too many grievances have devolved into aggression and conspiracy, fueled by social media, about what’s being taught in schools, public health regulations, and the way local election officials do their jobs. January 12, 2022

He added insurrectionist doctrine has radicalized people, who increasingly see disputes as tyranny, leading some to feel justified in making threats, stockpiling weapons or worse. Levin warned the aggressive behavior would lead to a shortage of civil servants. “It still has a corrosive intimidation aspect where people will say, ‘Why should I count ballots? Why should

I be on school boards? Why should I be in the public-health sphere when I can go into the private sector?’ “ Levin stated. Levin advised churches, abortion clinics, school boards and local governments to make sure they have adequate security. Last year the California State Legislature voted to establish a Commission on the State of Hate, but it has not yet held its first meeting.
