The Trial of Viviane Amsalem Black Comedy About Divorce Israeli-Style Is Cinema Of The Absurd By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic For all those cineastes who miss seeing work from the likes of Eugene Ionesco and Samuel Beckett, and the rest of the “theatre of the absurd” gang, take heart. The new Israeli dark dramedy film “Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem” is a worthy semantics-laden candidate to warm the cockles of your heart. The melodrama cleverly written and directed by the

brother-sister team of Ronit Elkabertz and Shlomi Elkabertz introduces to non-Israeli audiences the complicated nature of its legal system concerning marriage and divorce. In theocracies, religious law trumps all varieties of civil law procedures that are common in most other countries. In Israel there is neither civil marriage nor civil divorce. Only rabbis can legitimize a marriage or a dissolution. But this dissolution is only possible with

the full consent of the husband (oh,oh), and herein lies the story and plotline of the movie. The film opens in a courtroom setting where Viviane Amsalem (Ronit Elkabertz) has been applying for a divorce from her husband Elisha (Sasson Gabai) for three years. She is represented by her lawyer Carmel Ben-Tovim (Menashe Noy), who presents her case and legal papers to a three rabbi tribunal led by head rabbi (Eli Gorenstein). These

three gentlemen will eventually adjudicate Viviane’s petition. Needless to say, all parties are extremely frustrated after three years of continuances, and delays as all wait to bring closure to Viviane’s petition. Everyone that is, except Elisha, Viviane’s husband, who keeps saying No, I don’t want a divorce. The main sticking point is Elisha’s continuing refusal to agree to the divorce. He just keeps saying “no” every time the rabbinical court tries to bring

an agreement to the proceedings. He has been placed in jail for contempt of court rulings, but each time when the case begins again, he merely says “No” and it’s back to square one. Under the law Elisha has more power than the rabbinical court. Witnesses come and go and the trial keeps being delayed in order for the court and the parties involved “to agree” to Viviane’s Continues on Page 10

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Closing night Film and Gala were the culmination of an extraordinary 11 days of the Palm Springs International Film Festival. This festival is one of the most successful so far. The whole city opens up to bring this festival to its glory. Hotels, restaurants, transportation, TV, Radio, Newspapers and magazines all work to make this festival possible. The closing night film, Boychoir had Dustin Hoffman in the lead with a new young talent, Garrett Wireing, as the young boy singer and was filled with beautiful music by the many young choirboys in the film. An after party was held at the Renaissance Palm Springs Hotel for all those attending the closing night film. There were about 400 screenings of the films from 65 countries. Over 130,000 people attended these screenings that were shown at multiple theatres in 9km;Palm Springs. There were 126 sponsors for the Festival and close to 1000 volunteers. The Festival has a year-round staff and a number of board of directors and programmers. None of this could be possible without the help of all these individuals and businesses. Underwriters made the gala probably which drew a record number of 2,400 guests and is always sold out early. The films are a window on the lives and different worlds other than our own. The creativity of the writers and directors and storytellers leaves a lasting impression on the whole Valley. They put their hearts and souls into every single project and film. The A list of celebrities who come to walk the Red Carpet and arrive to help promote their films is impressive as well as the many that are given awards the night of the Gala. The many directors who are proud of their films attended Q&As to answer questions from the guests. The directors, producers, actors and writers come from all parts of our world to our Valley for the PSIFF. The Golden Globes have been held and many of the choices at the PSIFF were big winners, from actors to directors to films. This shows how important our Film Festival is in the industry and how great the programmers are at picking only the best to be shown here. It takes months of watching films to be able to choose the ones they think are the best for the PSIFF. They have a proven record on their ability to pick winners of Golden Globes and Oscars. Some people even refer to this product as Longevity Insurance. In essence, this product solves for longevity risk, which is the risk of outliving your money. With Longevity Annuities, you can defer the payments as long as 45 years and as short as 2 years. It is important to remember that the longer you wait to start receiving payments, the higher that income stream will be. That’s because annuity income streams are based upon your life expectancy at the time you start receiving the payments. The older you are, the less life expectancy you have, so the higher the income stream. A new change or regulations of deferred income annuities came about in July, when the Internal Revenue Service released regulations for Qualifying Longevity Annuity Contract (QLAC). The Treasury adopted the QLAC rule to improve accessibility and usability of Deferred Income Annuities (DIAs) in qualified retirement plans, including individual retirement accounts. Under the new QLAC rule, the value of longevity annuities that meet the conditions specified in the rule will be excluded from the account balance used to determine required minimum distributions. Generally Required minimum distributions must be started by age 70 ½, however with a QLAC, the maximum start date for QLAC payouts is no later than the first day of the month following the month of the owner’s 85th birthday. This ruling provides advisors the ability to stretch out payments and possibly lower the tax bite. DIAs can also provide an enhanced income stream for the future, while keeping your premium outlay to a minimum. With inflation worries looming, laddering DIAs over time can

ensure that contractually guaranteed income streams will help cover future expenses and lifestyle needs. The number of companies offering a Deferred Income Annuity (DIAs) has doubled since the start of 2012. As the end of 2014 approached, companies began announcing DIA products modified or designed for use in conjunction with QLAC. If you currently own a DIA, you must submit a signed election form if you wish to endorse your plan for it to be treated as a QLAC. Variable and indexed annuities, or similar contracts, cannot be used as a QLAC. Issue ages for the QLAC range from zero to 83. QLAC are subject to limits set by the federal regulations. Some of the other rules are the following. The lifetime limit is the lesser of $125,000 (indexed to cost-of-living in future years) or 25 percent of the individual’s aggregated traditional IRA account values as of the prior December 31, less previous IRA QLAC premium. The payment types can be single or joint life, either life only or life with cash refund. The death benefit prior to the start of income can either be return-of-premium (ROP) or no death benefit. “ROP plus interest is not permitted. Owners can elect to have their annual payment increase if they wish. The options include: CPI-U Index, 1 percent to 5 percent simple, compounded or flat dollar. By comparison, QLACs that meet the new regulations generally refer to contracts with income start dates after age 70.5 and at or before age 85. People who elect this will have their IRA’s RMDs reduced to reflect the amount that has been directed to the QLAC. Longevity Annuities(DIAs) can also be used for unique

legacy strategies to leave money to your heirs in payment form instead of lump sum. For target date or income later planning strategies, Longevity Annuities should always be compared to income riders attached to deferred annuities, to make sure that you choose the highest contractual guaranteed payout available. DIA income streams are “annuitized” and provide tax benefits if used in a non-IRA account. When an income stream is “annuitized”, a portion of that income from a non qualified (nonIRA) account is not taxable. This is important when evaluating and comparing products, and looking at real value calculations. The Good: Longevity Annuities (DIAs) are an efficient way to solve for income in the future, or what I call “income later”. DIAs have no annual fees, and no moving parts or attachments to the market. It’s a deferred pension with an enhanced guaranteed payout that can be used within and outside of an IRA. Some carriers will not allow deferral time frames within an IRA past age 70 ½, but some carriers will defer past that time period. You can also attach a Cost Of Living Adjustment (COLA) rider to the policy that will contractually increase the annual income by a specified percentage of your choice. For example, you can attach a 3% COLA to the Longevity Annuity which would contractually increase the income stream by 3% for the life or specified term of the policy. The Bad: Liquidity is the big issue with Longevity Annuities, so it’s important that the dollar amount allocated to this strategy is appropriate and suitable for your specific situation. In addition, the death benefit for most Longevity Annuity structures is

the premium paid if payments have not started. In essence, there is no growth component attached to the premium, but the payout is enhanced through the product’s design. For example, if you own a $100,000 Longevity Annuity that will turn on a lifetime income stream 10 years from now and you die in year 5, then your listed beneficiaries will receive $100,000. There is no growth component, only an enhanced payout. The Truth: In the past, income riders attached to deferred annuities were the only way to contractually solve for income in the future, or income later. Longevity Annuities have only become popular in the last few years, and are increasingly taking market share from fee driven income riders. (http://blog. annuity123.com/which-is-betterfor-future-income-longevityannuities-or-income-riders/) As the public continues to demand more simplistic and transparent annuity offerings, Longevity Annuities will continue to gain traction and popularity. The big carriers are the ones who offer Longevity Annuities, and sales continue to grow as people become educated about these efficient future income solutions Janice Gough is a S.A.F.E. financial Advisor in Palm Springs, Ca. 1,000,000th Contractor License

Milestone Reached 85 Years After First License Issued By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO – The nation’s largest industry* reached a milestone in California over the weekend as the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) issued its onemillionth contractor license. License 1,000,000 was issued on Saturday, January 10, 2015, to a tree service company in Norwalk (Los Angeles County). “This milestone says a lot about the resiliency of the construction industry,” said CSLB Registrar Cindi Christenson. “Despite ups and downs in the marketplace, this industry is a major reason the state has thrived, especially during the past century, and why California is the envy of many other states and countries. Construction has helped our

state though a depression, economic downturns, wars, natural disasters, and many other challenges.” C S L B w a s c re a t e d on August 14, 1929, with the support of the state’s construction industry, so the public would be protected from irresponsible contractors. CSLB began as the Contractors’ License Bureau under the Department of Professional and Vocational Standards. The Department had complete control over Bureau operations. The Bureau changed into its current Board format on September 15, 1935, enabling appointed industry representatives to have a say in the state’s construction industry regulations. Today, CSLB is a semi-autonomous board January 14, 2015

within the state Department of Consumer Affairs. The law that created the Board also defined three contractor categories that remain in effect today. They are “A” General Engineering, “B” General Building, and “C” Specialty contractors. In 1939, those categories evolved into the original license “classifications” and CSLB also began to examine applicants on their trade qualifications. Beyond building homes and major infrastructure and transportation systems, Califor nia’s construction industry was especially robust in the mid-1940’s after the end of World War II, and produced remarkable and iconic structures during the 20th century that include the California aqueduct;

dozens of bridges, among them the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges; multiple dams; and countless low, mid-, and highrise commercial and residential buildings.

Amazon Signs Woody Allen to Create First TV Series By FRAZIER MOORE AP Television Writer NEW YORK (AP) - Amazon Studios is delivering Woody Allen as creator of his first-ever TV series. The O s c a r- w i n n i n g filmmaker will write and direct all of the episodes of the half-hour series. A full season has been ordered for Amazon’s Prime Instant Video, the company announced Tuesday. The series is expected to premiere in 2016. No details on casting were disclosed, nor was the series title announced. Amazon Studios vice president Roy Price called Allen “a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all time,” keeping him “at the creative forefront of American cinema” during a

career that spans 50 years. “I don’t know how I got into this,” the 79-year-old Allen said in a wryly modest statement. “I have no ideas and I’m not sure where to begin. My guess is that Roy Price will regret this.” Allen’s signing adds another coat of luster to Amazon Studios, a recent entrant in the world of streaming video that is redefining what “television” means. On Sunday, Amazon gained new cachet when the first season of its series “Transparent” won two Golden Globes, including best comedy series. Allen has masterminded and often starred in more than 40 films since his maiden directorial effort, “What’s Up Tiger Lily?” in 1966. His latest movie project is “Magic in the Moonlight,” released last year,

with yet another film in the pipeline for this year. The late 1970s saw two of his most celebrated films, “Annie Hall” and “Manhattan.” He has won four Oscars and two Golden Globes. Last year he was presented with the Golden Globes’ Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award But his skills were honed on television, where he first gained widespread notice in the early 1960s as a standup comic, and during the 1950s, when he wrote for Sid Caesar and other TV stars. His prodigious output through the decades has also included magazine essays, books and plays. A musical adaptation of his 1994 film comedy, “Bullets Over Broadway,” ran on Broadway last year. Defiant Charlie Hebdo fronts Muhammad By Desert Star Staff PARIS (AP) - Charlie Hebdo’s defiant issue is in print, with a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad on the cover and a double-page spread claiming that more turned out Sunday to back the satirical weekly “than for Mass.” Twelve people died when two masked gunmen assaulted the newspaper’s offices on Jan. 7, including much of the editorial staff and two police. It was the

beginning of three days of terror around Paris that saw 17 people killed before the three Islamic extremist attackers were gunned down by security forces. Charlie Hebdo had faced repeated threats for depictions of the prophet, and its editor and his police bodyguard were the first to die. The cover shows a weeping Muhammad, holding a sign saying “I am Charlie” with the words “All is forgiven” above him.

Zineb El Rhazoui, a journalist with the newspaper, described the cover as meaning that the journalists were forgiving the extremists for the killings. Renald Luzier, the cartoonist who drew the cover image and who is known by his pen name “Luz,” said it represents “just a little guy who’s crying.” Then he added, unapologetically, “Yes, it is Muhammad.” Speaking at a news conference in Paris on Tuesday at

which he repeatedly broke down crying, he described weeping after he drew the picture. The issue maintained the irreverent, often offensive attitude Charlie Hebdo is well-known for in France. The first two pages included drawings by the slain cartoonists. One showed a much-loved late French nun talking about oral sex. Another showed a Muslim, Christian and Jewish leader dividing up the world.

The lead editorial laid out a vigorous defense of secularism, and of their right to lampoon religions and religious leaders and hold them accountable - and ended with a critique of the pope. “For the past week, Charlie, an atheist newspaper, has achieved more miracles than all the saints and prophets combined. The one we are most proud of is that you have in your hands the newspaper that we always made,” it read.

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK (AP) - The New York City clinic where Joan Rivers suffered a fatal complication during a medical procedure is

losing its accreditation at the end of the month, a federal agency said Monday. “Yorkville Endoscopy no longer meets the conditions

for a supplier of ambulatory surgical center services,” the Centers for Medicare Services said in a statement. As of Jan. 31, the Manhattan medical facility will no longer be eligible to receive federal funds for services provided to Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.

Rivers, an acid-tongued comedian who crashed the male-dominated realm of latenight talk shows and starred with her daughter on E! in “Fashion Police,” died Sept. 4 at age 81. The city’s medical examiner found she died of brain damage due to lack of oxygen when she

stopped breathing during an endoscopy days earlier. A message left at Yorkville Endoscopy seeking comment on Monday was not immediately returned. WABC reported that the clinic said in a statement it was continuing to work with all regulatory bodies. “We intend to communicate with CMS and appropriate authorities to have the decision reversed. Yorkville continues to be a licensed facility and perform procedures while cooperating with the regulatory process,” according to the statement. The clinic had presented a plan to correct problems uncovered during an investigation after her death. However, the CMS said Monday that Yorkville remained deficient in four areas, including “surgical services; quality assessment and performance improvement; governing body and management; and environment.” Rivers’ death was classified as a therapeutic complication, and no negligence was alleged in the federal report. Rivers’ daughter, Melissa Rivers, has hired a prominent malpractice attor ney to investigate.

Advanced Wound Healing Center Opens

Ribbon-cutting to be held in La Quinta Jan. 14 and Palm Springs January 29 By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, CA – Desert Regional Medical Center has opened the Advanced Wound Healing Center, with locations in Palm Springs and La Quinta, to provide sophisticated medical solutions for patients with difficult-to-heal wounds, including individuals with diabetes and other chronic conditions. The Advanced Wound Healing Center at Desert Regional has gathered a team of physicians, nurses and certified technologists who are specially trained to offer a wide range of advanced treatments – including hyperbaric oxygen therapy and reconstructive surgical procedures – with the goal of returning patients to their activities of daily life. The Advanced Would Healing Center will host two events to celebrate the opening of its new clinics: · A ribbon-cutting ceremony with the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce will be held at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 14 in the La Quinta Medical Center, 47647 Caleo Bay Drive Suite 110. The

event is open to the public; light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to (800) 491-4990. · A business mixer with the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce will be held at 5 p.m. Jan. 29 in the El Mirador Medical Plaza on the campus of Desert Regional Medical Center, 1180 N. Indian Canyon Drive, Suite 400. The event is open to the public; light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to (800) 491-4990. The Advanced Wound Healing Center at Desert Regional is part of the Amputation Prevention Centers of America, a network of wound healing centers which utilize an innovative team-based approach that pairs foot and ankle surgeons with vascular surgeons in order to reduce amputations for the growing number of people in the country who suffer from the complications of diabetes or peripheral arterial disease. Diabetes impacts 24 million individuals in the United States. Those with diabetes face increased risk of health complications, including impaired

blood circulation, loss of nerve function, a weakened immune system, foot ulcers and infections – all of which can lead to lower extremity amputations. For many diabetic patients with ulcers and poor circulation a combination of hyperbaric oxygen therapy and surgical procedures to restore blood flow can save a limb. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy

involves placing a person in a sealed chamber, where they breathe 100% pure oxygen under pressure greater than sea-level. Studies have shown that breathing 100% pure oxygen under pressure forces the oxygen to reach the tissues and body systems affected by injury, infection or disease. The therapy accelerates the body’s

healing process. It can also promote the growth of new blood vessels in an area damaged by trauma, infection or diabetes. Hyperbaric oxygen chambers will be available at both the Palm Springs and La Quinta locations of the Advanced Wound Healing Center at Desert Regional.

Toddler Rescued and Father Arrested in Indio By KMIR News Staff INDIO, Ca. - Officers today rescued an 18-month-old child and took the father into custody after responding to a 911 call from the toddler’s mother, who claimed he had threatened her with a firearm in their Indio home, a police spokesman said. When police arrived on scene just after midnight, Jesus Antonio Martinez followed the woman outside. But when he saw the officers, he immediately retreated back into the residence in the 45-900 block of Queen Palm Lane, Indio police Sgt. Dan Marshall said. The woman told officers that the couple’s child was still inside the house with Martinez, 31, and alleged that he had threatened her with a weapon, Marshall said.

The Desert Regional SWAT team was sent to the scene, and detectives obtained a search warrant from a Riverside County Superior Court judge, Marshall said. About 6:30 a.m., the SWAT team covertly entered the home and rescued the infant, who was unharmed, and detained Martinez without incident, he said. P o l i c e re c o v e re d a .22-caliber handgun from the residence, he said. Martinez was interviewed by Indio detectives and later booked into the Riverside County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, making criminal threats, domestic battery and possession of a narcotic for sale, Marshall said. Cities Approve HERO PACE Program Four More Cities in Coachella Valley program to Help Residents Save Energy, Water

By Desert Star Staff Riverside County, Calif. – The city councils of Coachella, Palm Desert, Palm Springs and Desert Hot Springs have voted to make the HERO Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program available to local residents. The vote will give homeowners in these Coachella Valley cities access to a second PACE program once applications start being accepted in spring 2015. The four cities join more than 20 other Riverside County communities in adopting HERO. HERO makes energyand water-saving renovations affordable for property owners by providing long-term, competitive financing through an additional property tax assessment. Payments are made through the property tax bill for up to 20 years, and interest is taxdeductible. “I have always believed that multiple PACE providers will create a healthy competitive environment resulting in increased level of service and availability of funds for our homeowners,” said Palm Desert councilwoman Jan Harnik, chair of the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) Executive Board. “This program will help residents make the best financial decisions while making their homes more energy efficient. Everyone wins!”

In December, CVAG’s Executive Board moved forward with approving HERO for the region, enabling all cities in CVAG to adopt the program. A wide variety of efficiency products are available to property owners through the HERO Program. Some of HERO’s most popular products include watersaving technologies, solar power panel installations, whole-home heating and cooling (HVAC) systems, energy-saving windows and doors, roofing and insulation. HERO also has more than 50 product lines to help homeowners save water during this extended drought, including high-efficiency toilets, faucets and showerheads; drip irrigation systems; rainwater catchment systems; gray water systems; as well as artificial turf and droughttolerant landscaping. “HERO will make it easy and affordable for local homeowners to save money by using water and energy more efficiently,” said Dustin Reilich, Director of Municipal Development for Renovate America, the company that administers the HERO Program. “When more homeowners invest in these types of improvements, it creates jobs and stimulates the local economy. HERO is committed to helping cities and counties reach their energy and water reduction targets by bringing these types of

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Mr. Richardson: I am new to the HOA concept and have thoughts about running for the board. However, there seems to be two concepts out there about the power of the board. One side states, ‘The board makes the decision, the members have no say in the decision-making process.’ The other side states, “the board is there to serve the community and the voices of the community should be heard and considered.’ I prefer the latter but our current board members often state the other. Is it possible to change this attitude? P.K., Beaumont Dear P.K.: www.desertstarweekly.com

investments into reach for most property owners.” In addition to helping homeowners save on energy and water bills, HERO spurs local job creation by increasing demand for contractor services. The HERO Program has helped to create more than 3,500 jobs in California since its launch in December 2011. The program has been adopted by 228 communities in California and helped to fund more than 22,500 residential projects, totaling more

than $425 million in financing. HERO is now available to 48 percent of California households. Participation in HERO is 100-percent voluntary for both local government agencies and property owners, and is cost neutral for jurisdictions. A growing number of California cities and counties are partnering with multiple PACE providers to increase financing choices available to consumers. Who Decides; Lot Line Adjusting? Your governing documents and the Davis-Stirling Act define which decisions are board decisions and which must be voted upon by members. Associations need boards to make most decisions, so the members are not required to meet each month to decide everything. For the same reason, only the board deliberates at board meetings, with members listening (except for open forum). However, from time to time certain board decisions arise which are of sufficient impact or importance that it better to consult the membership. The Davis-Stirling Act already requires this for operating rule changes – the decision is still the board’s to make, but homeowners receive extra advance notice of the proposed rule change. Members can be consulted in many ways, such as through “town hall” meetings. Straw polls or inviting comments by e-mail also might be appreciated by members on major decisions. Consider announcing the agenda item weeks in advance, giving interested members ample opportunity to espouse their views in open forum. Even though the board may legally make certain decisions,

PALM SPRINGS

sometimes it is healthy to “listen a little harder” to the neighbors. Thanks for your question, Kelly

Dear Kelly, I live in a PUD. Yesterday I inquired what the agenda item “lot line adjustment” referred to on the agenda of the upcoming board meeting. I was informed that the lot lines go up to our front doors and that the driveways are common area, and so maintained by the association, and that we need to change our governing documents stating that the homeowners will now be responsible because the Association cannot afford it. I would definitely prefer that my lot line remain as I purchased it and the common area remain the same. I don’t see how they can just be “changed” from where they have been since the development of the complex. Is that legal? Can these lot lines be changed so easily? I would appreciate any insight you can offer. Your column offers great information and guidance. Thank you, M.B., Riverside Dear M.B.: Your planned development January 14, 2015

(many call them “PUD’s” but there actually is no “U”) has its lot lines defined by a subdivision map recorded in your County Recorder office. Changing lot lines is very difficult, requires city approval, and would probably be cost prohibitive in your situation. Fortunately, it is unnecessary. Your association could modify its CC&Rs (by a membership vote) to reallocate driveway maintenance and repair responsibility to the homeowners. The definition of who owns what does not change; only the maintenance and repair responsibility changes. In either case, you all will be paying for your driveways – directly from your checking account to the contractor, or indirectly, through the HOA budget. Thanks, Kelly Kelly G. PSIFF FILM Kyrgyzstan Sends Movie Epic To Film Fest

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic “Kurmanjan Datka Queen of the Mountains”, is a first in many categories for the emerging and fledgling movie industry of Kyrgzstan, in Central Asia. It took the vision of former Kyrgzstan politician Sadyk Sher-Niyaz, who harbored the desire from boyhood to become a motion picture director to take the plunge; leaving behind a successful career in Kyrgzstan political life, and strike out to become a film director. Following a two-year post graduate course in screenwriting and directing in Moscow, Sher-

Niyaz returned to his native Kyrgzstan, and founded the film production company Aitysh Film in 2006. For his debut as a director he chose to film the epic story of his country’s most iconic citizen, Kurmanjan Datka, a young village woman who rose from a tribal village to become the leader of her country during the middle 1800’s just as Imperial Russia was expanding its influence into central Asia and beyond. His filmmaking colleagues were skeptical that such an epic film could made by any incountry production company. The story would be too sweeping

and difficult to recreate on film; especially with the proposed limited budget of only $1.5 million available to capture the scope of the project. Undaunted by naysayers, Sher-Niyaz forged ahead shooting his historical movie over a two-year period requiring a seven month shooting schedule, with the majority of the filming taking place in the Kyrgzstan mountains during all type of weather conditions. The result of efforts by almost 10,000 volunteers as extras and dozens of technical crews made the film the largest budgeted film that Kyrgzstan has produced.

life.” In the case of Elina Abai Kykz, the stunning-looking, ravenhaired, statuesque beauty (almost six foot tall) this is her seventh film. The camera loves her and when she sits astride a horse and rides she cuts quite a striking eye-capturing figure, indeed. The action scenes involving her, soldiers, and battles scenes make for sharp and exciting camera work. I ask through the translator her if she is studying English to further her career. “That’s one of the first things I’m going to do when I get back home”, she replied. Not only is she beautiful and can act, she has a lovely modulated voice that sounds like golden honey when speaking. She definitely has a future in world cinema if she chooses to continue with her acting career. She has a new film project coming out in March of this year. I just hope she doesn’t abandon those English lessons in the meantime. When I asked director SherNiyaz what is next on his schedule, he says “I’m thinking of making the Kurmanjan saga into a trilogy. There are so many facets to the Kumanjan Datka story, and each facet is a film story waiting to be told.” The Kyrgzstan film industry and the film“Kurmanjan Datka”, is an auspicious beginning on both accounts.

There are more than 50 speaking roles. The pay-off is a gorgeously photographed movie with pristine locations and settings with the sweep, style and excitement of Sher-Ni yaz ’s fa vor ite director the great David Lean. The story of Kurmanjan Datka is portrayed by four actors divided into four time frames. A young (5 year-old) who mystics and prophets predicted would become a great leader of her country. In the next section we follow the beautiful 23 year-old Elina Abai Kyzy who portrays the Kurmanjan becoming Datka or General or Leader of her country, the first woman in Asia to become a leader of a country. She lived to be 96 years-old. It’s a story about the choices people make in life that drives the narrative, according to director Sher-Niyaz. I had the opportunity to briefly interview director SherNivaz and his star of the film Elina Abai Kyzy during the PSIFF through a translator, although director Sher-Niyaz does speak some English. The casting process, according to Sher-Niyaz “… involved more than 500 male actors for the speaking roles and 200 professional female actresses for the major roles covering the events in the Kurmanjan Datka’s

petition. If you thought American lawyers were “continuance happy”, wait until you observe an Israeli rabbinical court in action. Semantics and Talmudic scholarly exchanges take place as the tribunal argue among themselves as to how to proceed. It’s an eye opening experience for Western cultured democracies. The brilliant and incisive script borrows a page from the theatre of the absurd in laying out a simple, straightforward premise – a divorce petition – and then observes how the film’s characters attempt to untie the

Gordian Knot situation the court and Viviane find themselves in. The wonderful, understated, performances of Elkabertz and Gabai are what drives the film narrative. Thanks to the notoriety and success of the film, Israel may reexamine some of its country’s laws concerning marriage and divorce or dissolution. According to sources close to the producers, “Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem” could be in selected American theatres this summer. The newly adapted movie version revolves, in short, around a young down-and-out, mousey British shoe salesman Harry Witherspoon (a winning performance by Dominic Marsh) who takes his dead American Uncle (a sedated (?) live actor who mustn’t make a false move played by Don Amendola) – a murdered Vegas casino manager to Monte Carlo – for the best time of his life, even though he’s dead. sharing the last screen kiss with a wonderful actor, Dennis Farina.” Farina passed away not long after the film wrapped. In Ashley’s brief interview, he explains how he was drawn to the project. As the artistic director of the La Jolla Playhouse near San Diego, Ashley has commissioned work from Ahrens and Flaherty in the past, and knew that Lynn was adapting their stage book-musical of the same name; preparing to craft the vehicle into a musical screenplay. “It was sent me and I’ve always loved the musicals of the 1960’s. I knew it would be a fun experience; light comedy/ farce, with gorgeous costumes and a farcical plot by writers I know and respect, and I said Yes, Let’s do it”. One doesn’t have to don a thinking cap in order to understand the improbable plotline of “Lucky Stiff” in order enjoy the music and lyrics cleverly interwoven as dialogue in the telling of the story. Just go with the flow and the high energy performances of the actors. “Lucky Stiff” will find itself in general release later this summer.

Anti-War Film Statement From Estonia Resonates War as a subject matter is a staple of the American film industry. And with good reason. War has always been a hardcore cash cow for business and for those who toil in its vineyards. That’s probably why we continue to find the genre on movie screens around the world. America, however, has experienced relatively few “wars” on its own soil, as compared to those of Europe. The scars of numerous regional conflicts and war run deep in Europe, a continent weary of war, especially after the horror that was WW II. “Tangerines”, Estonia’s Official 2014 Oscar submission film that screened at the recent Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF), intelligently, and sensitively written and directed by Zaza Urushadze lays out the folly of war using the 1992 Georgian vs. Chechen rebels.as the players in a war designed by others. There have been Estonian settlements on the Caucasian Black Sea coast for over one hundred years. The conflict, however, forced the majority of Estonian to return to the country of their forefathers. What remained behind were ghost towns with just a handful of Estonians who refused to leave. When a battle takes place near a rural village, Ivo (superbly played by Lembit Ulfsak) and his friend Margus (Elmo Nuganer) end up caring for two of the combatants who have been www.desertstarweekly.com

seriously wounded. Chechen mercenary Ahmed (menacingly played by Giorgi Nakashidze), and Georgian soldier Niko (portrayed by Mikheil Meskki) discover each other in Ivo’s house while recovering. Ivo soon realizes that housing deadly enemies is not easy. His solution is to calmly declare his home a diplomatic neutral zone, in order to force both of the opponents to survive. A truce settles over the house as the fighters keep eyeing one another waiting for a chance to settle a score. In the meantime, a Chechen Rebel group on patrol stops at Ivo’s house to check on the recent battle damage. Both Ahmed and Niko say nothing to the rebel commander in charge. Ivo reassures the commander that everything is okay. Once the wounded soldiers recover, they’ll be on their way. And he and Margus can continue to harvest his tangerine crop and then they too, will be on their way out of the war zone. That’s the long and short of this poignant, cautionary tale of survival under duress in a worntorn part of the world. The film works most effectively thanks to the deft direction of writer Urushadze and to the excellent cast. I thinks it’s safe to say that the anti-war message of “Tangerines” will not diminish the impact of an intense, wellcrafted war movie that, no doubt, will resonate with audiences everywhere.

MUSIC

BY ROBERT KINSLER

Americana Champions Shone Bright in 2014 Before fully moving on into the New Year, it seems essential to celebrate several overlooked masterworks from 2014.

Artist: Sturgill Simpson Title: Metamodern Sounds in Country Music (High Top Mountain Records) You might like if you enjoy: Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard Tell me more: There is a reason that Sturgill Simpson is set to play at both the Coachella and Stagecoach Festivals in April. The Kentucky native’s outstanding sophomore album “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music” is both a celebration of authentic country and genrebending modernism. Highlights include “Turtles all the Way Down” with its perfect mix of

country and gospel, “Long White Line” featuring a swirling psychedelic finish, and the tender “The Promise” with Simpson’s voice mostly hushed until a soaring finale reveals his baritone at its most ardent. Information: SturgillSimpson.com. Artist: Ray Price Title: Beauty Is… (Amerimonte Records) You might like if you enjoy: Ray Price, Vince Gill, George Jones Tell me more: When Ray Price died at age 87 in December 2013, country music lost one of its most beloved voices. The release of 2014’s “Beauty Is…” featured the final recordings made by Price as he was battling cancer, allowing his glorious

baritone to shine while delivering 12 bittersweet ballads. Things get going with Price and Vince Gill joining forces on “Beauty Lies in the Eyes of the Beholder.” Later Martina McBride sings with Price on the symphonic “An Affair to Remember.” But it really is Price who gets to impress here, with “This Thing of Ours” and “No More Songs to Sing” particularly poignant. Information: BeautyIsRayPrice. com. Artists: Dave Alvin & Phil Alvin Title: Common Ground: Dave Alvin & Phil Alvin Play and Sing the Songs of Big Bill Broonzy (Yep Roc Records) You might like if you enjoy:

The Blasters, John Doe Tell me more: When brothers Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin decided to record their tribute to Big Bill Broonzy, it marked their first studio collaboration since The Blasters’ “Hard Line” (1985). A celebration of Broonzy’s groundbreaking blues compositions as much as the Alvins’ own fiery approach, the blend of Phil’s raucous vocals and harmonica with Dave’s blistering guitar work and gentle baritone are a potent combo across the riveting collection. Information: yeproc.com. Artist: The Fallen Stars Title: Way Out West (The Fallen Stars) You might like if you enjoy: The Mastersons, Gram Parsons,

Emmylou Harris Tell me more: On their latest LP “Way Out West,” Huntington Beach-based the Fallen Stars (husband-and-wife Bobbo and Tracy Byrnes, and drummer Brandon Allen) are joined by a strong cast of talented players including keyboardist Rami Jaffee (the Wallflowers) for a surefire run that includes a couple of originals and a wealth of artful covers. Among the many winning reworkings on the disc are the Fallen Stars’ versions of the X classic “4th of July” Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison” and Chris Tarmy’s edgy rocker “Las Vegas.” Information: TheFallenStars.com.

Divers Back Out Today Searching For Missing LA Man By Angela Monroe The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department tells KMIR today they are continuing the search on the property of the JW Marriott. Officers say the visible part of the dive team search isn’t all they are doing; the sheriff’s department says they are working any and all angles of this missing person case. After today’s search, officers say they will decide where to focus their search efforts for the following day. They continue to ask the public to contact them if they have any information. 33-year-old Omar Meza, a vice-president for AIG Financial Distributors, was last seen around 11pm last Thursday at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa. His family traveled to the valley to help with the search, and continues to work to spread the story nationwide. PALM DESERT -- It was a long, agonizing weekend for a family searching for a man missing here in the desert. He’s from Los Angeles, and was last seen on Thursday at the JW Marriott in Palm Desert. His family has now traveled

to the valley, trying to help in the search which included divers searching a pond. The sheriff’s dive team is searching the lake for the second day. Omar Meza traveled to the valley for business last Thursday and was last seen on surveillance video in a parking lot here at the JW Marriott. Omar’s wife tells us he met with coworkers that night for dinner, then took an Uber ride to the JW Marriott. His wife says there must have been some confusion on which Marriott because he was booked for the Courtyard Marriott, not the JW. Days continue to pass, and Omar Meza remains missing. Sheriff’s dive teams are searching the lakes at the JW Marriott in Palm Desert. His family is still holding out hope that he will be found safe. “Video surveillance footage shows him coming in around 11:15 so he spoke to me while he was here, and there’s footage of him exiting around 12:20 or so and he seen walking towards a parking lot,” said Omar’s wife, Diane Meza. That was the night of Thursday, January 8th

Omar’s wallet and jacket were found on the golf course of the JW Marriott. His wife, Diane, say police bloodhounds led them to a lake on the property. “He was a stronger swimmer, we remain optimistic so that’s why we’re just trying to get his face out as much as possible,” said Diane. Omar didn’t show up for his work meetings the next day. His brother, Sven Meza, says Omar travels to the valley for business often. “Omar is very analytical, very smart, he’s a person who likes a schedule, likes an itinerary, he likes to keep, and with that being said, he also checks in,” said Sven. Omar’s family has called hospitals, put out fliers and is asking for the public’s help in the search. “We have faith that he may have possibly gone into the lake and gone out and he’s wandering around with some type of memory loss and he needs to contact, or someone may have seen him that can contact us, we’re still keeping the faith at this point,” said Sven. Omar’s wife says she just wants to bring home her January 14, 2015

husband of five years. “He just made everything so much better, he was my champion, he really encouraged me, this was going to be a big year for us, we had lots of good

plans, and happy times, we really loved to travel together. Yeah, it’s hard,” said Diane. The family is offering a reward for information leading to his return. Source KMIR

26Th Annual PSIFF Announces Festival Winners

By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, CA (January 11, 2015) - Setting the stage for the year’s film festival circuit, the 26th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) announced this year’s juried award winners at a luncheon at Spencer’s Restaurant on Saturday, January 10, 2015. The Festival, held from January 2-12, 2015, screened 196 films from 65 countries, including 51 of the 83 foreign language entries for this year’s Academy Awards®. Audience Award winners will be announced on Sunday, January 11. “This year’s Festival has been a huge success on all fronts, with consistently packed theaters, terrific audience response to the lineup of films and special programs and record filmmaker and industry attendance,” said Festival Director Darryl Macdonald. “I’m especially pleased that our Another Europe showcase and Cine Latino program received such a warm response from audiences and critics alike. I’m equally delighted with the juries’ award choices, though given the outstanding overall quality of the films on view at this year’s event; I wish we could present awards to each and every one of them.” “Eastern European filmmakers — both emerging and established — have utterly dominated our juried awards this year: first time feature director Vuk Rsumovic from Serbia takes the New Visions New Voices prize for No One’s Child, the Bridging the Borders award goes to Georgian director George Ovashvili’s Corn Island plus a special jury prize to Kosovo’s Three Windows and a Hanging directed by Isa Qosja, and the Schlesinger award goes to Polish director Eliza Kubarska for her debut documentary Walking Under Water. The power of stories from this region is palpable and infectious” said Artistic Director Helen du Toit. AUDIENCE AWARDS This year’s Festival attendees selected Selma (United Kingdom) directed by Ava DuVernay the Mercedes-Benz Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature. Selected as this year’s Opening Night film, Selma is a story of a movement. The nuanced and human view of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. leaves one feeling deeply inspired by the many devoted individuals whose combined commitment and sacrifices changed the course of history. “This year’s voting echoed the awards momentum building around Oscar contenders Still Alice and Selma,” said Festival Director Darryl Macdonald. “The Awards Buzz section proved to be extremely popular once again, with Damián Szifron’s Wild Tales scoring the highest amongst those on the Foreign Language Oscar shortlist. Our audiences were also entranced by New Zealand Director James Napier Robertson’s The Dark Horse,” said Artistic Director Helen du Toit. www.desertstarweekly.com

The runner-up narrative films were The Dark Horse (New Zealand) and Still Alice (USA). Popular narrative selections in alphabetical order included: 5 To 7 (USA), Accused (Netherlands), Behavior (Cuba), Margarita, with a Straw (India), Sold (USA), Tangerines (Estonia), The Nightingale (China), The Search (France), Wild Tales (Argentina). Keep On Keepin’ On (USA) directed by Alan Hicks received the Mercedes-Benz Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature. A deeply moving documentary that celebrates the great jazz trumpeter Clark Terry and blind jazz piano prodigy Justin Kauflin’s close relationship. The runner-up documentary film was The Salt of the Earth (France). Popular documentary selections in alphabetical order included: Back on Board: Greg Louganis (USA), Holbrook/Twain: An American Odyssey (USA), How I Got Over (USA), Limited Partnership (USA), The Breach (USA). The winner and runnerups were picked on the basis of over 70,000 ballots cast by audience members during the Festival. Both winners received the John Kennedy Statue (“The Entertainer”) specially designed for the Festival. FIPRESCI PRIZE A special jury of international film critics reviewed 51 of the 83 official Foreign Language submissions to the Academy Awards® screened at this year’s Festival to award the FIPRESCI Prize for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year. The jury selected the Oscar shortlisted Leviathan (Russia), directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev. Michael Oleszczyk (film critic and scholar) said, “At once timely and timeless, this film manages to comment on contemporary issues in a way that is both artistically stunning and deeply humane.” In a statement, Director Andrey Zvyagintsev said, “We are thrilled and very proud to receive this honor from the Palm Springs Film Festival jurors. Our film attempts to portray a universal truth while staying close to its Russian roots; it is deeply gratifying to feel that audiences in the US respond to this story and the spirit in which it was told.” FIPRESCI Prize for the Best Actor of the Year in a Foreign Language Film went to Haluk Bilginer from Winter Sleep (Turkey), directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Fest juror Ernesto Diezmartínez Guzman (columnist and author) said, “This actor achieves a superb performance through dialogue, and is even more impressive when he’s silent, planning his next lethal response.” Anne Dorval from Mommy (Canada), directed by Xavier Dolan, received the FIPRESCI Prize for Best Actress of the Year in a Foreign Language Film. Ella Taylor (film critic) said, “As the somewhat unhinged mother of a thoroughly unhinged son, Anne Dorval appears in almost

every frame of Xavier Dolan’s Mommy. The jury recognizes this performance for the sheer expressive range of her transition from “crazy mom” to “crazy wise mom”, forced to make an impossible decision for everyone’s good.” The 2015 FIPRESCI jury members were Ella Taylor (film critic), Michael Oleszczyk (film critic and scholar) and Ernesto Diezmartínez Guzman (columnist and author). NEW VOICES/NEW VISIONS AWARD The New Voices/New Visions jury selected No One’s Child (Serbia), directed by Vuk Ršumovic. The film is tale about the desire to be loved and to belong is told from the perspective of a feral boy confronting civilization for the first time. The New Voices/New Visions competition included 10 new international talents making their feature film debut at the Festival, with the additional criteria that the films selected are currently without U.S. distribution. The winner received a sculpture designed by famed glass artist Dale Chihuly and a $60,000 Panavision camera rental package. The jury issued the following statement, “We are deeply impressed by this compelling, multilayered and assured first feature film by a writer-director from Serbia. A child actor (in an astonishing performance by Denis Muric) undergoes an extraordinary transformation in this personal, intimate tale set in a time of historical turmoil. Carefully considered yet unexpected choices and bold direction result in a film that is both immediate and immersive, and the jury eagerly look forward to more work from this exciting new talent.” The jury presented a special mention to Fidelio, Alice’s Journey (France), directed by Lucie Borleteau. The jury stated, “We were excited to see a strong, distinctive and honest portrayal of a female protagonist in a role which pushes the envelope on modern romance and handles female sexuality with a refreshing lack of inhibition. The director and co-writer deliver a daring, nuanced debut which uses humor to offset the darkness of this exquisitely shot story about loneliness and life at sea.” The winner also received a $60,000 Panavision camera rental package. The films were juried by Daniel Hammond (Co-founder and CEO), Broad Green Pictures), Danielle Digiacomo (Director of Acquisitions, The Orchard) and Eric Doctorow (CEO & Founder Random Media). CINE LATINO AWARD The Cine Latino Award, was presented to Flowers (Spain), directed by Jon Garaño and José Mari Goenaga. The jury issued the following statement, “For its melancholy and poignant multilevel exploration of romance and remembrance the jury presents the 2015 Cine Latino January 14, 2015

Award to the Basque film Flowers (Loreak).” Special Mention went to Not All Is Vigil (Spain/Colombia), directed by Hermes Paralluelo. The jury stated, “For its sensitive portrayal of the relationship of two spirited octogenarians as they confront an inevitable chapter of their lives the jury would like to present a special mention to the film Not All Is Vigil.” In a statement, Directors Jon Garaño and José Mari Goenaga said, “Hi thank you very much for the award, a really nice and great surprise for us. We have had three amazing days in Palm Springs. For us it has been a really great experience and we would like to thank the festival, thanks to everyone who made it possible for us to be there. For us this award has been very important because we feel that it is a great opportunity to make our language be known in other countries and other places so thank you very much.” The jury for the Cine Latino Award included Josep Parera (Entertainment Editor – La Opinión) Nacho Carballo (Festival Director, Gijón International Film Festival, Spain) and Tom Davia (Founder & Managing Partner of Cinemaven Media). The Cine Latino Award is sponsored by the Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG) and the University of Guadalajara Foundation/USA. The winner will receive a $10,000 cash prize. THE JOHN SCHLESINGER AWARD Walking Under Water (Poland), directed by Eliza Kubarska, received The John Schlesinger Award, which is presented to a first-time documentary filmmaker. The film is the real-life adventure story of Alexan, a compressor diver and member of the Badjao tribe of ocean nomads who live on the edge of the Sulu and Celebes Seas in Borneo. Getting older, Alexan wishes to pass on his skills and wisdom to 10-yearold Sari. But compression diving is dangerous and not a stable source of income. Will Sari follow in Alexan’s footsteps or will he, instead, turn to the encroaching tourist industry for employment? Will Alexan be the last of the Badjao divers? Polish alpinist and adventure filmmaker Eliza Kubarska travelled to Borneo as a climber and, finding Alexan, left as a diver herself. Sumptuously photographed, both above ground and under water, by Piotr

Rosolowski, Walking Under Water depicts not a mythical place, but certainly, even in its extremes, a magical one. The jury issued the following statement, “Walking Under Water is a masterful and lush meditation of an unknown world that reveals a strong humanity while pushing the boundaries of filmmaking. Walking Under Water is a visually and sonically elegant work that never falters – an extraordinary film.” The films were judged by Gaylene Preston (filmmaker – Mr. Wrong, Ruby and Rata), Larry Weinstein (filmmaker, Making Overtures, Inside Hannah’s Suitcase) and Greg Barker (filmmaker, We Are the Giant, Manhunt). THE HP BRIDGING THE BORDERS AWARD Corn Island (Georgia), directed by George Ovashvili, received the HP Bridging the Borders Award presented by Cinema Without Borders and Hewlett Packard, which honors the film that is most successful in exemplifying art that promotes bringing the people of our world closer together. The prize includes an HP ZBook 15, valued at $3,000. The Cinema Without Borders Special Jury Award went to Three Windows and a Hanging (Kosovo) directed by Isa Qosja. The winner received a certificate for an upcoming Method Acting Intensive Workshop provided by The Lee Strasberg Theater & Film Institute in West Hollywood, CA, valued at $2,000. In a statement, Director George Ovashvili said, “Thank you very much for this amazing news. Bridging the Borders – sounds very exciting. I think this is the main idea of the art, generally, to connect the people, connect the hearts, and bring all of us together. I would like to thank all of you – the organizers of Palm Springs Film Festival, which is really the people’s festival, which deserves this award “Bridging the Borders between the people”. Thanks to the organization who gives this very important award, the juries, the best audience, I meet in Palm Springs, ever.” The Best of the Fest screenings will take place on Monday, January 12. For a complete list of screenings visit www.psfilmfest.org. For more information, call 760-322-2930 or 800-898-7256 or visit www.psfilmfest.org.

Fear Grips San Francisco Neighborhood By KMIR News Staff SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The residents of a neighborhood plagued by gang violence came together to mourn the killings of four young men shot dead as they sat inside a stolen car. Police said the killings are gang-related but no suspects have been publicly identified. The San Francisco Police Department’s gang task force and homicide detectives were investigating the Friday night shooting, police spokesman Albie Esparza said. Police have stepped up patrols since then, but that has done little to bring calm to residents afraid of more violence in reprisal for the killings. A prayer vigil was held Monday night at the San

Francisco Zen Center, across the street from where the young men were killed. “I was commenting on how I hadn’t heard of shootings or there hadn’t been any murders in the neighborhood in so long, in a number of years,” resident Lynne Winslow told KGO-TV. “It used to be so common.” San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr said four guns were likely used in the shooting and two were recovered in the stolen car. He said preventing a reprisal attack was a priority. Community leaders said fearful parents and residents were keeping their children inside. “Our community is bleeding,” said Mattie Scott, a community

activist whose 24-year-old son was slain in the same neighborhood in 1996. “Fear is a major issue right now.” The coroner identified the dead as David Saucier, 20, of Antioch; and San Francisco residents Yalani Chinyamurindi, 19; Harith Atchan, 21; and Manuel O’Neal, 22. The four were shot dead a few blocks from San Francisco’s golden domed City Hall where trendy cafes, antique stores and popular restaurants are opening in a neighborhood long plagued by gang violence. Ten men and a woman are in jail awaiting trial on federal charges of murder, racketeering and a host of other counts connected to a gang authorities say is based

in the neighborhood. A makeshift memorial of candles, flowers and handwritten signs appeared on the sidewalk next to where the shooting occurred across the street from the Samovar Tea Lounge and the San Francisco Zen Center. Two bullet holes were visible in an empty storefront. Graffiti mourning one of the men slain was spray-painted on a nearby apartment building. Yalini Chinyamurindi’s mother told the San Francisco Chronicle that her son was at the “wrong place at the wrong time.” Asale-Haqueenyah Chandler said her son worked at a nearby Japanese restaurant and was headed to a liquor store to cash his paycheck during his

30-minute break. “He called his friend to pick him up,” Chandler said. “He only had a half-hour. He wanted to give me some money toward our rent and save money for a car.” Witnesses reported more than a dozen shots were fired into the double-parked car. “I heard ‘pop, pop,’ about 15 times in quick succession,” said Jason Palmer, who was walking his dog two blocks away when the killings occurred. Palmer, an actor who moved to San Francisco a year and a half ago, said the neighborhood is plagued with graffiti and crime. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. S P O RT S Indians, Blackhawks in Epic Battle For First Place BY DANIEL MARINELLI

PALM SPRINGS – On December 5, Palm Springs High School Indians football program proved they are among the best in California by taking home the CIF championship. Now a little over a month later, after defeating the preseason league favorite La Quinta Blackhawks (2-1 in DVL, 9-5 Overall) last Friday, the Indians (3-0 in DVL, 11-2 Overall) basketball team is also showing its capability of winning the DVL and possibly matching their football brethren with a CIF title of their own. Heading into the game at

Palm Springs High School, the Blackhawks and Indians were tied for first atop the DVL with records of 2-0. Indians shooting guard John Rich owned the first quarter and the game; in fact, the six-foot-one junior had 10 points in the first quarter and 15 in the first half. With a down year in the DVL and a talented senior-stacked team, the Blackhawks came into the 2015 season with high expectations. La Quinta went 7-1 to start the season but are a long way away from reaching full potential, going 2-4 in the six games prior to the first place

tiebreaker with the Indians. The Blackhawks have some work to do before living up to all the preseason hype and the work needed was on display in the first half against the Indians. Failing to get a bucket until 3:21 remained in the first quarter, the Blackhawks looked scared and timid in the league’s first measuring-stick game for the two schools. The Indians, however, looked primed and ready take a firm grasp on the top spot. Behind Rich’s 15, the Indians leapt out to a controlling 30-16 halftime score, but it did not last. Senior big man Kameron Dashner scored six points and snatched five rebounds in the third but the Blackhawks defense is what whittled the Indians’ lead. La Quinta outscored Palm Springs 14-7 in the third quarter and led 37-30 after three. The game became thriller in the fourth quarter as it turned into the Deondre Hawkins (Indians) and Marcelo Zepeda (Blackhawks) show. Within a span of 75 seconds, Zepeda completed a three-point play, knocked down a three and stole an inbounds pass that he eventually turned into a three. Once down 18, La Quinta only trailed 50-49 with 45 seconds left to play. “Marcelo is just a sophomore, and hasn’t played with a lot of confidence,” Coach Hepner said in an interview. “He’s been getting some more playing time, and as you saw, he’s instant offense out there.” After Palm Springs’ Ricky Wright made two foul shots to extend the lead to 52-49, Zepeda was fouled beyond the arc, and sent to the free-throw line with a chance tie the game that was

once out of reach. Zapeda’s first shot hit every part of the rim before finally falling and the following two fell with ease. The game was tied, 52-52 – a brand new ball game with just 15 seconds left. Exiting the timeout huddle, the Indians had 10 seconds and the final possession. Hopkins, already with five clutch fourth quarter points, drove the lane, spun and finessed the gamewinning layup that put Palm Springs up 54-52. “That was way too close. But we’ve been playing close games all year,” Palm Springs head coach Chris Howard said in an interview. “They’re so big, they just beat you down – and that 25 kid (Zepeda), man, he was just throwing them in from everywhere.” Zepeda finished the game with 21 points (17 in the second half). Rich had a game-high 24 points and Hawkins scored 19. This week, the Blackhawks travel to Xavier Prep to take on the Saints today and travel to Cathedral City High School to take on the Lions on Friday. Also today, the Indians travel to Indio High School to take on the Rajahs. Palm Springs travels to Coachella Valley High School to take on the Arabs on Friday. FILM

BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

In January-An Entertaining Look Back and Forward

It is said that the month of January is named after the twofaced Roman god Janus, with one face looking back at the old year while the other face gazes into the future. In that spirit, for this column, I will take a look back and forwards at the wonderful world of entertainment here in Southern California as we begin 2015. For me the New Year began with a “Salute to Vienna” at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. It is performed in the local area every January for one day only, and seeing the show is like a mini musical visit to Vienna, a city of dreams. Next year, if you want to travel to Vienna sans passport, mark your 2016 Entertainment calendar and check off this Viennese bonbon. This year the singers were Thomas Weinhappel (baritone), Lilla Galambos (soprano) and Eugene Amesmann (tenor). All three were in great voice and high spirits under the direction of conductor Niels Muus. The music was ‘lustig’ with Strauss waltzes and music from operettas like “Die Fledermaus” and Franz Lehar’s “The Merry Widow.” Two dance companies also performed with grace, style and flourishes of humor. Seeing “A Salute to Vienna” was great fun and a great way to begin 2015. Looking forward, on Thursday, January 22, Shen Yun will perform at the Dolby Theater (formerly the Kodak) 6801 Hollywood Blvd. through Sunday, Jan. 25. It will then move to Northridge on Jan. 27 and 28 at the Valley Performing Arts Center, and from Jan. 29 to 31 at the Segerstrom Center in Orange County. For tickets and information go to www.ShenYun. com/LA or phone 800-880-0188 Shen Yun has received high praise from critics around the world and features a cast of 60 dancers and 40 musicians who bring audiences 5,000 years of Chinese culture, presented in one magical evening of music and www.desertstarweekly.com

dance. Sadly, while this lavish production is touring the world, it has not been allowed to be seen in China itself. The ideas for Shen Yun began in 2006 when Chinese artists gathered in New York and developed the concept for this lavish show. Now five companies travel around the world and present Shen Yun on four continents. The people of China have long believed that their culture was a gift from heaven and that art was the primary way to explore the connection between humanity and the higher universe. In one evening the 100 performers in the Shen Yun company take their audiences on a journey of 5,000 years as they present a musical and dance tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends and heroic stories. Once again, no passport is needed to go on this beautiful, artistic journey. In 2014 I saw Noel Coward’s charming period comedy,”Blithe Spirit,” at the Ahmanson, starring Angela Lansbury in her TonyAward-winning role as Madam Arcati. She is amazing as a medium who conjures up the late wife of a novelist. At 89 she is still a true crowd-pleaser. Everything about this production is excellent, from cast to sets and costumes. The show ends on Jan. 18, so there is still time to enjoy it. As for movies, one of my personal favorites was “Into The Woods,” based on the Stephen Sondheim musical of the same name. A fairytale for adults, the film stars Emily Blunt as the Baker’s wife, Meryl Streep as the witch, Johnny Depp as the wolf and Chris Pine as Prince Charming. It opened on Christmas Day, 2014, is a contender for Golden Globes and may also be in the race when Oscar time rolls around. Other excellent films from 2014 include “The Imitation Game,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightly. This stunning drama tells the true story of how one

man saved countless millions of lives by figuring out how to break the German Code during WWII. “Time Magazine” calls Cumberbatch’s performance “the best performance of the year.” Other excellent films, based on real characters, include “The Theory of Everything” about Stephen Hawking and

“Unbroken,” Angelina Jolie’s tribute to war hero and Olympic athlete Louis Zamparini Coming to DVD in January: “The Boxtrolls,” from the creators of the Academy Awardnominated films “Coraline” and “Paranorman,” will be available on Blu-ray and DVD on Jan. 20.The animated film has been

nominated for 13 Annie Awards and will probably be nominated for an animated film Oscar. On Jan. 27 “Fury,” starring Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf, arrives on Blu-ray and DVD. The powerful war drama. set in 1945, has been hailed as “a film that grabs you and never lets go,” by Peter Travers, “Rolling Stone.
