Crypto ATMs in hot water for alleged human & drug trafficking Government report claims cryptocurrency ATMs need tighter regulation

By Desert Star Staff A report by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) suggests tightening registration requirements for crypto kiosks, which are blamed for increased human and drug trafficking cases. The organization, which provides auditing and investigative services for the US Congress, has linked the use of crypto payments to facilitate illegal human and drug trafficking to crypto ATMs in a new study released on Monday. “As [crypto] market usage expands, FBI officials said they expect to see an increase in the use of virtual currency kiosks for illicit purposes, including for human and drug trafficking,” the report stated. According to the GAO, which examined the use of cryptocurrencies in global trafficking operations, ATMs are becoming increasingly popular for illegal transactions. They added, the less regulated than crypto exchanges,

meaning transactions made via the kiosks are even more challenging to trace. The agency claims that the lack of information about the kiosks and the activities performed through them is stalling law enforcement’s efforts to identify and stop criminals. For instance, although kiosk operators must register with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), they are not bound by law to regularly report the location of their ATMs. This “limits federal agencies’ ability to identify kiosks in areas that have been designated as high risk for financial crimes,” the GAO said. By introducing stricter regulation to the crypto ATMs, agencies will get a chance to have more information on their location and use, which will help identify “potentially illicit transactions.” The report urged FinCEN and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to join forces in reviewing the registration requirements for crypto

kiosks and exchanges. According to the GAO, the agencies are to comply with the recommendation. Overall, according to the GAO’s findings, more than half of 40 large online “commercial sex markets,” which “may be used to facilitate sex trafficking,” accept

cryptocurrencies as payment. It also found that 36% of all US Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigations that involved crypto were linked to drug trafficking, as well as a quarter of crypto-related investigations carried out by the IRS and 85% of probes by the US Postal Service.

School choice options are changing in DHS and across the country

By Desert Star Staff If you’re reading this, chances are you’re a parent, or have friends or neighbors who are. Baby Boomer, Gen X, or Millennial— the K-12 school scene has changed so much since we were kids. Understanding these changes can help moms and dads guide their children to greater learning, success, and happiness. So: here are the three biggest changes affecting education in Desert Hot Springs and across the U.S. today, and what these changes mean for your family. First, school choice opportunities have broadened over the last generation. That means parents have more options for where to send their children to school. For example:

traditional public schools have adopted more flexible enrollment policies. Charter school laws have passed in 45 states, including California. More families are aware they can choose public magnet programs, where kids receive education with a special focus, like STEM or the arts. Today, many California students are able to receive scholarships to help fund their tuition at private schools. Plus, a growing number of California families are choosing homeschooling. A second game-changer since when we were kids is that there’s now more community support for making school choices. There are also more resources for parents to help them find schools and learning environments that meet their children’s needs. I’ve worked in K-12 education for more than 15 years; over that time, I’ve seen dozens of parent-focused organizations spring up to shine a spotlight on learning options in local communities. From helping parents find scholarships to private schools, to helping them figure out the process of transferring to public school outside of their zone, to offering bilingual application assistance, grassroots organizations are cutting the stress out of school searching. You can visit schoolchoiceweek.com/ california to find community organizations in California. Keep in mind that parents cite word-of-mouth as a key factor

in what school they choose. This means you have the power to help others in Desert Hot Springs by sharing your own school experiences. Third, a plethora of online learning environments have developed since our school days. These online schooling options are more comprehensive and focused than the emergency remote learning that many families experienced during the pandemic. For example, California offers several free, full-time online learning options for students, like California Connections Academy, California Virtual Academies, Insight Schools of California, and IQ Academy. Besides official online schooling, resources like schoolhouse.

Rancho Mirage Writers Festival Announces Postponement

By Desert Star Staff RANCHO MIRAGE, CA The 8th Annual Rancho Mirage Writers Festival was scheduled to kick off with Angel Night on January 25, 2022, featuring Four-Star Navy SEAL Admiral William H. McRaven, followed by a Q&A with Megyn Kelly. However, as COVID-19 cases continue to surge in Riverside County via the Omicron variant, the Rancho Mirage Writers Festival Board of Directors unanimously agreed the event should be rescheduled. “The safety of our authors, VIP angels, readers, staff and hard-working festival partners are always our top priority. Even though the Festival had taken every precaution available to ensure only fully vaccinated individuals attended or worked the event, the recent surge and uncertainty necessitate we practice extreme caution at this time”, said festival

founder Jamie Kabler. Festival founder Jamie Kabler and his team had assembled over 70 authors and special guests, including Dr. Madeleine Albright, Gloria Borger, Fran Lebowitz, Dr. Doris Kearns Goodwin, Walter Isaacson, Martha McCallum, Jon Meacham, Jane Pauley, Karl Rove, Salaman Rushdie, Jake Tapper, George F. Will, and Judy Woodruff to headline the 2022 Rancho Mirage Writers Festival. The event featured over 82 sessions located at the Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory. “Each year, Jamie (Kabler) assembles an amazing lineup of the world’s top authors, commentators and presenters and produces the best writer’s Festival in America. This event is extra special because it is hosted in our Rancho Mirage Public Library and Observatory. I know

how much effort and passion Jamie and his executive team pour into this Festival and what a hard decision this is after working so hard this past year. We stand by their

decision and commend their commitment to keeping our community safe”, said Mayor of Rancho Mirage, Ted Weill. Angel sponsorships and passes along with their

corresponding benefits will be transferred to the 2023 festival, held on February 1-3, 2023. For more information, please go to www.RMWritersFest.org

“D” Grade for California on Children’s Well-Being: Report

By Suzanne Potter/PNS A new report shows California’s 13.5 million children are suffering in the

wake of the pandemic. It gives the state low marks on childcare, foster care, mental-health supports and

preventive health screenings. The new 2022 California Children’s Report Card from the nonprofit Children Now

showed children of color, in particular, are likely to absorb toxic levels of stress. Harold Goldstein, executive director of Public Health Advocates, a statewide research and advocacy organization, noted the suicide rate for teens of color has shot up in the wake of police killings, worsening poverty, and separation from friends during COVID. “The suicide rate among Black young people has doubled in the past six years and continues on a very troubling upward trajectory.” According to the report, only about one in four infants with Medi-Cal coverage got a well-baby checkup in 2019. And children’s doctor visits have dropped significantly in the pandemic. On the plus side,

California gets “A” grades for getting kids covered by health insurance, regardless of immigration status, and putting record funding toward transitional kindergarten for all four-year-olds. However, Goldstein added, the state gets low grades for lack of affordable child care and low pay rates for caregivers. “If skilled, quality childcare isn’t available to young children, they can be harmed, and it’s going to impact them for the rest of their life,” Goldstein contended. The report authors also concluded California needs to work harder to find stable homes for foster kids, with nearly 40% being placed in three or more homes during two years.

Harry Styles, Billie Eilish and Ye Rumored to Be Headliners For Coachella Festival

By Desert Star Staff According to Variety, Harry Styles will headline the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2022. The singer is currently preparing to release new music before the show. He recently completed his biggest North American tour since the pandemic in early 2020. Since December 2019, the pop star hasn’t released new music, but rumors of new material have been rife in recent weeks. The 2022 Coachella Music Festival lineup has been announced, and many fans are excited to see their favorite artists. ‘Ye’ formerly known as Kanye West and Harry Styles

is expected to headline the first weekend. In contrast, Billie Eilish and Ye will perform on the second weekend. The festival was initially supposed to be headlined by Rage Against the Machine, Travis Scott and Frank Ocean. However, festival co-founder Paul Tollett confirmed in August that Ocean would instead perform at Coachella 2023, and Scott was removed from the lineup following his controversial Astroworld Festival in Houston Drake, Lil Baby, and Travis Scott were initially scheduled to headline Coachella, but they were pulled from the lineup. Billboard also reported

that Rage Against the Machine would not perform but provided no reasons. The festival, which is already sold out, is scheduled to take place over the weekends of April 15-17 and April 22-24, 2022, at its usual location of the Empire Polo Ground in Indio, Calif. However, the alarming omicron surge and the recent postponement of the Grammy Awards have many wondering whether the festival will take place in April or be moved — for a fifth time — to a later date. Organizers previously indicated ticket purchases for the previous dates will be January 14, 2022

honored on the new dates for both festivals. However, Goldenvoice said pass holders should have received an

email with instructions for requesting a refund or rolling over for the new dates.

Health Care Access for All Californians

By Desert Star Staff Governor Gavin Newsom today visited a Central Valley health clinic to highlight his proposed healthcare investments. “California is tackling the cost of health care head-on. Under the California Blueprint, our state will be the first to achieve universal access to health care coverage,” said Governor Newsom. “Doubling down on our actions to reduce costs for middle-class families and expand access to important services, this proposal is a transformative step towards strengthening the health care system for all Californians. Everyone is healthier when everyone has access to quality, affordable care.” The California Blueprint proposes providing a full expansion of Medi-Cal to all eligible Californians regardless of immigration status, including an estimated 764,000 undocumented immigrants. Medi-Cal has covered all lowincome children regardless of immigration status since 2016. Under Governor Newsom’s leadership, California in 2019 became the first state to extend Medi-Cal coverage to all eligible undocumented young adults up to the age of 26. In addition, last year’s State Budget made California the first in the nation to expand full-scope Medi-Cal eligibility

to low-income adults age 50+, regardless of immigration status. The Blueprint builds on that work by expanding fullscope eligibility to individuals ages 26-49, making Medi-Cal available to all income-eligible Californians irrespective of immigration status. In addition to expanded access, The California Blueprint lays out a meaningful plan to address the underlying cost drivers of quality care and improve the affordability of health coverage in the state. The Governor’s plan calls for creating an Office of Health Care Affordability, which will address underlying cost drivers and improve the affordability of health coverage, benefiting all Californians. “No other state in the country has done more in the space of health care access and affordability than the state of California,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly. “I am proud of this Administration’s work to pioneer a comprehensive health care system that will become a national model for expanding access, reducing costs, improving services, and closing equity gaps.” Further, the California Blueprint calls for $1.7 billion to bolster health infrastructure and support frontline workers by expanding and diversifying the state’s health and

community care workforce, including scholarships, loan repayments and grants. The plan also calls for new investments and increased resources for local health departments and Tribal Health Programs to enhance and strengthen their infrastructure to improve health outcomes. Under Governor Newsom’s leadership, California remains steadfastly committed to providing comprehensive reproductive health care services and preserving a woman’s right to safe and legal abortion. To address behavioral health services and provide

help to those that need it most, The California Blueprint proposes investing $1.5 billion over two years for additional housing supports for those with behavioral health needs. In addition, Blueprint offers to invest an additional $1.4 billion over five years to add multi-disciplinary mobile response services for crises related to mental health and substance use disorders as a new Medi-Cal benefit. Last year, Governor Newsom’s California Comeback Plan provided unprecedented investments to improve the lives of all Californians, with a particular focus on the most

vulnerable in our communities. These investments injected new resources into the behavioral health system while expanding access to children and youth, expanded and rehabilitated adult and senior care facilities, expanded MediCal eligibility to older adults regardless of immigration status and assets, developed home and community-based services, launched MediCal Rx to negotiate drug prices, and committed to increasing subsidized child care by over 200,000 slots.

U.S. prices thru the roof biggest jump in decades

By Desert Star Staff A 7% annual increase in consumer prices is the latest bad economic news for Americans Consumer prices in the U.S. made the most significant year-to-year jump since 1982, the latest sign that rising inflation negatively impacts working Americans. According to Labor Department data released on Wednesday, December’s price increase followed a 6.8% average rise the month before. But Americans have so far remained upbeat, thanks to a tight labor market. The Conference Board’s consumer confidence index rose again in December, this time above projections by economists surveyed by Reuters.

According to the Mastercard Spending Pulse, that’s fueled spending: Holiday retail sales increased almost 11% in 2021 compared with 2019. Consumers may be able to take specific supply-chainrelated cost hikes in their stride. For example, used-vehicle prices were up about 37% in December from a year earlier, following similar increases throughout 2021 primarily due to inventory crunches related to chip shortages. But the rising cost of day-to-day living will become harder to ride out. Housing is especially troubling, up 4.1% in December. The median U.S. rent jumped by nearly 20% last year, according to Apartment List, and is expected to rise further in 2022 as people are

pushed out of the housing market due to increasing home values. In addition, grocery prices were up 6.5% year-over-year in December. White House officials have claimed in recent months that increased spending by Americans has led to the rising cost of grocery items and gas. They have also blamed consumer spending for clogged ports and supply chain issues, which have also been driving up prices in multiple industries.

The Federal Reserve has said it is ready to introduce interest rate hikes this year to curb ongoing inflation issues, which could begin as soon as March. In his Senate testimony on Tuesday, Chairman Jerome Powell said it’s a “long road to normal” for the U.S. economy as the country continues to navigate the Covid-19 pandemic. “We’re just going to be moving over this year to a policy that is closer to normal.

But it’s a long road to normal from where we are,” he said. Inflation has become a top priority for Americans, even beginning to outshine the pandemic for many. This week, an Associated Press/ NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll found that an overwhelming majority of respondents listed inflation as a top concern in 2022, while only 37% said Covid was one of their highest priorities.

If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Helpline for Parents Gets Lifeline in Governor’s New Budget

By Suzanne Potter/PNS A helpline providing emergency emotional support for California parents and young people would get a three-year extension under Gov. Gavin Newsom’s new budget proposal released this week. The California Parent and Youth Helpline stand to get $4.7 million to continue its work helping people in distress. Lisa Pion-Berlin, president and CEO of Parents Anonymous, which runs the helpline as part of its “Raising the Future” programs, said the helpline had received 16,500 calls, texts and chats since it started in the summer of 2020. “Our calls are up 26% since July of last year,” PionBerlin reported. “Every single month, our call volume is

going higher and higher.” In June, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey found 70% of parents said they’d had recent mental health challenges, and 50% said they had suicidal thoughts in the past month. You can reach the helpline at 855427-2736 Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Pion-Berlin said the trained counselors who answer the helpline teach self-calming and mindfulness techniques, help people build their support systems, connect them weekly, and organize free Parents Anonymous online support groups and other services. “What they get on the other end that’s so important with the immediate emotional is somebody listening, who issue that they’re facing,” is not blaming and shaming Pion-Berlin explained. them, and helping them deal The California Legislature

US Chamber of Commerce says what can help tackle inflation

By Desert Star Staff Many industries across the US are currently facing labor shortages The US Chamber of Commerce has called for doubling the number of legal immigrants into the country, which could ease inflation and the worker shortage crisis. “We need more workers.

We should welcome people who want to come here, go to school and stay,” Chamber of Commerce CEO Suzanne Clark told reporters during a press conference on Tuesday. “That is a place the government could be particularly helpful, and we do believe it would be anti-inflationary.”

Clark added that bringing in more foreign workers would help ease the supply chain disruptions at the heart of the inflation spike, including the shortage of truck drivers. “If we can alleviate the worker shortage, it might be the fastest thing to do to impact inflation,” she said. The Chamber’s chief

policy officer Neil Bradley added: “We didn’t have a sudden surge in concentration in our supply chains that somehow produced the bottlenecks. So when the administration goes to concentration or antitrust or the FTC as the solution, they’re missing the larger issues that they need

to be working on.” Economists warned that the rapid spread of the Covid-19 Omicron variant is threatening to sharply slow the US economy and increase already-high inflation in the first quarter. In addition, many companies are already experiencing more significant worker shortages.

Monster Beverage to buy craft-beer maker in alcohol market drive

By Desert Star Staff Energy drinks maker Monster Beverage Corp (MNST.O) is entering the alcoholic drinks market through a $330 million deal for craft beer and hard seltzer producer CANarchy Craft Brewery Collective LLC. The all-cash deal, announced on Thursday, extends the trend of soft-drink companies branching out to the alcohol space as traditional boundaries between the categories rapidly blur. Coca-Cola Co (KO.N) has partnered with brewer Constellation Brands Inc (STZ.N)to launch Frescabranded ready-to-drink cocktails. In contrast, rival PepsiCo Inc (PEP.O) has partnered with Boston Beer Co (SAM.N) to launch a Mountain Dew-branded alcoholic beverage. Monster said the deal would add Cigar

City, Oskar Blues, Deep Ellum, Perrin Brewing, Squatters and Wasatch to its portfolio but exclude CANarchy’s restaurants. Monster, whose biggest shareholder is Coca-Cola, currently develops and markets energy drinks brands like Monster Energy, Burn Energy Drink and Full Throttle Energy Drink. The deal is a “springboard” for Monster into the alcoholic beverage space, its co-Chief Executive Officer Hilton Schlosberg said in a statement. “The acquisition will provide us with a fully inplace infrastructure, including people, distribution and licenses, along with alcoholic beverage development expertise and manufacturing capabilities in this industry,” Schlosberg said. CANarchy supplies craft beverages throughout the United States and 20

countries and U.S. territories and has seven manufacturing locations and 900 employees, according to its website. The deal is expected to close in the first calendar quarter of this year. In November, a source told Reuters that Monster was discussing a merger

with Constellation. Still, the Corona Extra and Modelo Especial maker’s top boss said in a conference that the company would only engage in small bolt-on acquisitions. “The CANarchy Craft Brewery acquisition may imply that MNST decided to go on its own in terms of alcoholic

beverage manufacturing, but it may still need a larger scale alcohol distribution network,” RBC Capital Markets Nik Modi said. Source: Reuters Reporting by Praveen Paramasivam in Bengaluru; Editing by Shinjini Ganguli and Sriraj Kalluvila

WHO warns we’re not ready to treat Covid like flu

The global health body has said the ongoing spread of Omicron across Europe poses a “huge amount of uncertainty” about the pandemic The World Health Organization’s (WHO) senior emergency officer for Europe has urged governments not to treat Covid as endemic due to the risk of the virus “evolving quite quickly” and presenting “new challenges.” Issuing the warning on Tuesday, Dr. Catherine Smallwood called for continuing vigilance due to the impact of the Omicron

strain of Covid-19. With Europe having seen 7 million new cases of Covid in the first week of 2022 alone, the UN health agency warned that Omicron could infect more than half of Europeans within the coming two months. Given the spread and continuing uncertainty about the trajectory of the virus, Smallwood cautioned

against recent calls to treat the pandemic as endemic. “We still have a huge amount of uncertainty and a virus that is evolving quite quickly, imposing new challenges. However, we are certainly not at the point where we can call it endemic,” Smallwood stated. The concerns raised by Smallwood about downgrading Covid follow a January 14, 2022

statement from Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez about changing the way Covid is tracked. Citing how the virus’ lethality is declining, Sanchez suggested that Covid be tracked similarly to the flu. “I believe that we have the conditions for, with precaution, slowly, opening the debate at the technical level and at the level of health professionals,” Sanchez said.

Smallwood’s concerns were echoed by Dr. Hans Kluge, the WHO’s regional director for Europe, who said on Tuesday that countries face a “closing window of opportunity” to protect their health systems from being overwhelmed by Covid. His comment was sparked by how “Omicron moves faster and wider than any variant we have seen.” www.desertstarweekly.com
