‘Standing Up, Falling Down’ Director Matt Ratner, Actors Ben Schwartz, Billy Crystal, and Eloise Mumford Story and Photos by Pat Krause During the PSIFF, many time’s major actors, actresses, and directors often come to show their films for the first time or maybe just before it gets released to the public. One of those films, Standing Up, Falling Down, brought significant movie stars to the screening of the Film. Comedian and actor Billy Crystal along with fellow actor Ben Schwartz and actress Eloise Mumford arrived on the
Red Carpet before the Film for photos and interviews about the Movie. They were joined by the Director Matt Ratner and local dignitaries on the Red Carpet. They were thrilled the Film was chosen to show at the PSIFF. A lot of people involved with the Film were part of the audience. The Film is about a stand-up comic whose dream crashed, and he had to move back in with his parents until he could find his way back to his career. He
Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Fred “the Hammer” Williamson Celebrity Invitational Golf Tournament is in its 10th year. This tournament benefits the Wounded Warrior Project, which is a charity closest to his heart. Fred”The Hammer” as he is lovingly called was a former football player for the Oakland Raiders and the Kansas Chiefs. That is where he earned the title, The Hammer. Like many other athletes, their careers are over in football while still young men because of age. Fred was also a former Marine serving for 6 years, where I am sure he got his desire to work with and for Wounded Warriors Project. You may have
seen him on TV promoting Wounded Warriors Project. Fred became an actor in Hollywood, where he starred in many films. He did a lot of television appearances and is still acting to this day with upcoming roles in new projects. He once appeared in the iconic TV show MASH. Fred and his wife Linda are local residents, and you might see him at local charity or golf events. His wife Linda is well known for fashioning Christman Trees for Act for MS and the Christmas Tree Lane Gala. Wounded Warrior Project helps our most severely wounded. Veterans
meets a very unlikely alcoholic Doctor that becomes a great friend. Both men find courage in facing their failures with their like and compassion for each other and each other’s lives. These two characters mesh together so nicely that they make the Film seem like you are part of it. They bounce the characters’ words off each other non-stop. You can tell their continued friendship and similar ideas they have shown in the Film. The
Film is funny, tragic, emotional, sad, and great; I loved it. Many films have a Q&A after where they speak about their Film, and the audience gets to ask questions. In the case of this Film, the Q&A was almost as good as the Movie. The actors worked off each other like comedians do. One person was leaving when Chrystal yelled at him and told him this stuff was the free. Schwartz chimed in and told him they would meet him
in the lobby to finish the Q&A if he had to leave. Such things had the audience in stitches. There were a few questions, but at the end of the movie, there was a standing ovation with loud clapping. I didn’t hear one person say they didn’t love the Film. Billy Crystal noted that the funeral scene was shot in his hometown just around the block from his old house where he grew up. Little tidbits like that are always part of a Q&A.

Moderator Scott Khouri, Actress, singer Lainie Kazan, and David Cohan, VP of the board. Photo by Pat Krause. Story and Photos by Pat Krause CVRep held its first Luminary Luncheon this year to celebrate that honored Actress and singer Lainie Kazan. These luncheons are anticipated as guests get to mingle with the star and listen to a great Q&A about their lives. The Luncheon was held at the Agua Caliente Resort Casino in Rancho Mirage. Guests enjoyed a delicious lunch before the drawing of several raffle prizes. The moderator this year for Lainie Kazan was a life long friend Scott Khouri. Scott knew a lot of the many personal questions to ask her about her life and career.
Lainie took to the stage and sat in the opposite chair, saying this was her better side to the delight of the guests with laughter. Lainie said she knew Scott for over 20 years. They spent many years as friends thru thick and thin, as she stated. Lainie mentioned she was just a young girl from Flatbush, and her mother was a significant influence in her life and career. She said she went to college with many a star of today, including Barbara Streisand. She was a great and funny storyteller. One of the questions was about when she was on Broadway as an understudy.

She said she had hoped to one day be the star. One day the producer told her she would be going on as the star couldn’t make it. She called all her friends to come to see her, and they all showed up only to see the star come on stage after all. The next night the producer told her she would definitely be going on as the star. Still, she couldn’t tell anyone except her mother, who had Lainie’s list and called everyone anyway. She once posed for playboy, not knowing what it was all about and was disgraceful for a nice Jewish girl, more laughter from the guests. She stopped trying to
glamourize herself and became just her, and people responded to that. She told about her time on Broadway, trying to be the character she was playing. She also mentioned that one of the worst parts of her life was when she was fired from a job. One of the funnier stories is when she was telling about how she worked for \ for the MOB, and they paid her 40,000 dollars for 3 weeks, and she really wasn’t aware of it all. Her incredible career has gotten her around the world performing as a Singer, Actress, and comedienne. CVRep is growing by leaps and bounds in their new facility.

(This term was created by a famous insurance agent who worked in New York and met most of his prospective clients on the elevators.) You must be prepared to tell your story in a New York minute! You are basically providing a brief summary of what you do or can offer. By keeping your approach simple, straightforward, and easy to understand, you will gain their interests and, most likely, a new connection. Always close by asking for a time to meet. First, you must identify and explain what makes you different than your competition. Start by identifying your ideal client. What stage of life are they in? What is their average net worth? Where do they

Former Candidate Doubts Process, Has Confidence In Voters
By Desert Star Staff CONCORD, N.H. -Ahead of a debate tonight, the Democratic presidential field has been rapidly thinning. But even former candidates are voicing renewed faith. New Jersey Senator Cory Booker suspended his campaign on Monday. And spiritual advice author Marianne Williamson dropped out last week. Neither qualified for tonight’s debate in Iowa. In a long interview with Public News Service and 2020 Talks, Williamson was critical of what she called the “campaign industrial complex” and the money in politics she said is “eating our democracy.” But she also said she found faith in the voters. “The material system is even more corrupt than I knew, but the American people are even more wonderful than I knew,” Williamson said. “I think the American people are really smart. It is the best place we could be looking to for guidance.” Both Booker and Williamson have been stuck below 2% in most polls. Only six candidates have polling and contribution numbers high enough to qualify for the debate stage this time. Williamson maintained her criticism of what she called a corporate aristocracy in control of much of the economy. And she took issue with the way candidates are blocked from the debates - describing it as political insiders protecting their

CO Eyes Reintroducing Wolves After 25-Year WY, ID Success
Proponents of reintroducing wolves in Colorado say the animals will help restore a natural balance between predator and prey, and entire ecosystems. (Public Domain Pictures) By Desert Star Staff DENVER -- Sunday marked 25 years since wolves were reintroduced in Yellowstone National Park and central Idaho, and wildlife advocates are hoping Colorado voters will consider the programs’ success when deciding on Initiative 107 on the November ballot. The measure would direct
Colorado Parks and Wildlife to create a plan to reintroduce wolves by December 2023. Jonathan Proctor, Rockies and Plains program director with Defenders of Wildlife, said the work in Yellowstone offers a blueprint for bringing the predator back to its historic habitat. “We have 25 years of experience and data and facts
to understand the benefits of wolf restoration to the northern Rockies,” Proctor said. “We can use those lessons learned and finish the job here in the southern Rockies.” Some hunters oppose the measure, citing concerns about the potential loss of elk. But Proctor said after wolves returned to Wyoming, elk populations actually increased,
and hunters had higher success rates. He said wolves restore a natural balance between predator and prey, and entire ecosystems. They keep elk moving instead of clustering around waterways, which protects fish habitat and keeps watersheds clean. Ranchers also have voiced concerns about the potential loss of livestock. Proctor said livestock loss in Yellowstone and Idaho since wolves were reintroduced turned out to be just one tenth of 1% of herd numbers. He added Initiative 107 would include compensation for ranchers. “And although we expect the losses to be very, very small in the region of Colorado, if we compare that to what’s happened in the northern Rockies over the past 25 years, those losses are real to individual ranchers, and we should take that very seriously,” he said. He said ranchers

Could Vermont become the next Nevada?
By Desert Star Staff Vermont lawmakers are considering a bill that would legalize prostitution in the state, as conservatives remain staunchly against the progressive idea that is increasingly being pushed into the mainstream around the US. The proposal to legalize sex work is sponsored by four female lawmakers and is currently pending in the House Judiciary Committee. Rep. Selene Colburn, a cosponsor of the bill and a member of the Progressive Party, said decriminalizing sex work would improve the health and safety of prostitutes. The underlying question is, do we need to criminalize consensual sex between adults on any terms? She added that prostitutes should feel they have the “protection of the police if they need it.”Other sponsors of the bill are Diana Wolnooski, Maxine Grad, and Emilie Kornheiser. Nevada is currently the only jurisdiction in the United States to allow some prostitution. There are active brothels in seven counties in the state. There is a growing push
from left-wing liberals and more Libertarian-minded conservatives to legalize sex work in more jurisdictions. Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, who is a senator from Vermont, said last summer that he would be open to decriminalizing prostitution. The Libertarian Party has also endorsed decriminalizing sex work. Still, their 2016 candidate, Gary Johnson, received less than four percent of the popular vote in the election, so one could argue that the ideas of the party are not exactly mainstream. — Libertarians favor the repeal of all laws creating “crimes” without victims, including all acts related to sex and commerce between consenting adults. — VT Libertarian Party There was even a bill introduced to decriminalize prostitution in Washington DC last year. In a fierce debate, more than 100 people testified for and against it. The DC Council Committee ultimately did not vote on the bill. Some argue that decriminalizing prostitution will increase the demand for sex workers, which will
increase the need for human trafficking, a point made in a Harvard Law and International Development report. Colburn and others believe though that by decriminalizing the act, the government is not driving sex workers “underground,” and they would essentially be ending black markets and giving protections to those who take part in the exchange. Social conservatives, however, remain staunchly against the idea of legalizing
sex work, accusing the ‘pimp lobby’ of seeking to increase their profits from the sex trade rather than caring for anyone’s safety or wellbeing. Vermont is the latest US state to introduce a bill to fully decriminalize prostitution. That includes pimps (ie, traffickers), sex buyers, and brothels. The pimp lobby keeps trying to find a way to increase profits by exploiting more women, but we abolitionists won’t stand down! — Laila Mickelwait Vermont would do well to
listen to the voices of survivors and activists who know the real horror of prostitution. Do not buy into the propaganda of the sex trade lobby run by pimps and punters. — SPACE International Elsewhere in the world, this triggers many regrets, and reduce women & girls to mere commodities. Not at all so rosy as claimed by ‘sex work’ lobbyists. Seeing this playout for the past 17+ years here in SA. — Marcel van der Watt
Groups Sue to Protect Florida Panther from Deadly Road Projects
By Desert Star Staff TAMPA, Fla. Conservation groups filed a lawsuit yesterday against state and federal agencies over road-widening projects in the middle of Florida’s critical panther habitats. Widening projects along State Roads 29 and 82 in southwest Florida also include the first “continuous-flow intersection” in the state, designed to help traffic flow more smoothly while drivers are attempting left turns. State Road 82 will go from two lanes to six, and Earthjustice Florida-based Staff Attorney Bonnie Malloy
says that spells trouble for Florida’s endangered panthers - when 85% of their deaths are on roadways. “Obviously bigger, wider roads means further areas for the panther to cross, and more vehicles on the road for the panther to try to dodge,” says Malloy. “So, there’s different ways to take that into consideration and mitigate for those impacts, and the agencies are failing to do that.” On behalf of the Sierra Club and the Environmental Confederation of Southwest Florida, Earthjustice filed suit against the Florida
Department of Transportation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Florida transportation officials have said the roads will pay big dividends to those who use them. Among several claims, Malloy says the lawsuit points out the Florida Department of Transportation excluded its own findings - that the road widening is “likely to adversely affect” the Florida panther by destroying key habitat and increasing the potential for fatal motor-vehicle collisions. “Unfortunately, with these projects, there seems to be

a trend where they’re doing inadequate level of review and just pushing these through,” says Malloy. “Which is, of course, causing great alarm for us and the species and habitat that will impact.” The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service issued a biological opinion that the roadwork was unlikely to hurt the
panther, but the lawsuit claims that conclusion is flawed. On the federal endangered species list since 1967, there are now only 100 to 160 Florida panthers left in the wild, and Malloy says southwest Florida is their last remaining wild territory.

How to Create a More Functional Laundry Room
By Desert Star Staff A laundry room may be one of the spaces that you use the most, but cramped quarters and clutter can hinder your productivity. Eliminate the excuses and get your laundry room under control with these tips to add function
to your washing routine. Use space wisely. Your laundry room may not have a big footprint, but you probably have more usable space than you realize. Install shelves or storage units on the walls and consider the ceiling as a spot to hang a floating drying rack.
Don’t overlook the back of the door, where you can mount a storage system or use an over-the-door alternative. Maximize storage. Many laundry rooms suffer from a lack of storage, which hinders space to fold and manage laundry while making the room
less pleasant overall. A durable, attractive organization system like Dimensions by ClosetMaid can add instant organization and style to your laundry room. The system provides numerous design options, convenient accessories and configurations of cabinets and drawers, accommodating virtually any space. Resist wrinkles. Prevent unsightly wrinkles by hanging garments straight out of the dryer. A hanging rod is easy to install and lets you take advantage of vertical space in smaller rooms. Be sure to also stock up on hangers of various styles so you always have an ample supply ready when the buzzer sounds that another load is ready for your attention. Promote ventilation. Another common issue in laundry rooms is limited ventilation, which can promote mold, affect air quality and hinder air drying for special garments. A clever way to enhance ventilation while increasing your storage space is ventilated shelving that
Starting a Home Remodeling Project
7 tips for choosing a qualified contractor By Desert Star Staff Outside of the home itself, remodeling is typically one of the largest investments you can make as a homeowner. While some projects can be tempting to tackle yourself, many larger-scale projects may require hiring a qualified professional. Because remodeling your home is a big undertaking, it’s important to take steps to ensure the professional you hire to perform the work is qualified to complete it to the highest standards of quality and integrity. Consider these tips from the experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry to help you make an informed decision when hiring a remodeling contractor.

Get Recommendations: One of the best ways to find qualified, professional help is through word-ofmouth referrals. Ask your relatives, friends, neighbors or co-workers – particularly if they’ve recently renovated their own homes – if they have any previous experience with companies they would recommend. Also consider searching online for reviews of companies in your area. Stay Local: It’s often best to consider established local remodeling companies first, as they are typically more compelled to perform highquality work, which allows their businesses to thrive and remain in the community. Local
professionals are also likely to know permit requirements and building codes in your city or county, which can change from year to year.
Follow Your Design Aesthetic: Whether your home features a mid-century modern, contemporary or farmhouse design style, it’s critical to choose a remodeler who is knowledgeable in the construction and design of the style of your home. Additionally, a company that specializes in remodeling kitchens may not be suited for a bathroom or bedroom project. Ask for Licenses and Insurance: Many states, but not all, require contractors to be licensed, bonded and insured. Ask for copies of licenses and insurance certificates for any

Create a folding station. One of the biggest laundry pitfalls is folding and putting away clean clothes. A clear, clean space in the laundry room can help nudge you toward completing the task more efficiently. If you have frontloading machines, it may be as simple as adding a counter or sturdy shelf above them. If you use top-loaders, you may need to get more creative. If there’s room, a laundry sorter with a flat top is a good solution. Or if floor space is at a premium, you might consider a shelf that mounts to the wall and folds down when you need it. remodelers you’re considering to make sure they’re current. Most states also require contractors to carry worker’s compensation, property damage and personal liability insurance for their crews. Contact your state or local licensing agencies to ensure the contractor meets the minimum requirements.
Search for Violations or Complaints: Because you can’t always rely on a portfolio or references, it’s important to also check with your local consumer affairs office or the Better Business Bureau to ensure there are no complaints on record for the contractors you’re considering, which may help further narrow your list.
Check References: Once you’ve narrowed your list of potential contractors, ask for a list of references you can contact and a portfolio of work. A typical reference list includes 10 or more jobs with dates as well as the customer’s name, address and phone number, and a portfolio should also contain at least 10 projects with photos of the space before work began, during the project and after completion. If possible, also

Trump Administration Fast-Tracking Judge Confirmations
By Desert Star Staff LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -Over the past few years, the U.S. Senate has confirmed 185 of President Donald Trump’s judicial nominees, the majority of whom have a conservative track record. Along with two Supreme Court justices, senators have confirmed 50 circuit court and 133 district court judges. According to States Newsroom reporter Allison Stevens, who has covered politics for nearly a decade, the sheer number of conservative confirmations amounts to what some are calling a repeal of progressive reforms that hearken back to the New Deal. “And what President Trump is doing, and Mitch McConnell is supporting and doing in the Senate, is supporting hundreds of conservative judges, who
oppose a lot of progressive reforms, throughout the country,” Stevens explains. The Senate recently confirmed Lee Philip Rudofsky as federal judge for the eastern district of Arkansas, which includes Little Rock. Stevens says Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell regularly speaks in public about his goal of filling all of the remaining vacancies left on the federal judiciary. “But I don’t think it’s something that the media pays much attention to, and I don’t think it’s something that the public really cares all that much about, for the most part,” Stevens states. Stevens says groups such as the American Constitution Society and the Alliance for Justice are trying to change that. “They’re trying to call attention to the impact

Trump Trump also accused the media of trying to portray “terrorist Soleimani” as a “wonderful guy.” Though the president has claimed the January 3 assassination of Soleimani was due to the general planning attacks against US forces and embassies, his own defense secretary admitted on Sunday that he “didn’t see” any specific evidence to suggest those attacks were imminent. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also struggled in a recent press conference to define the “imminent” threat Soleimani presented
to the US. He claimed the US “got it right” with their decision to kill the general. A reporter just asked Pompeo if he can provide specific evidence of the imminent threat that led to Soleimani’s assassination. And he has absolutely nothing. These men want to lie us into war, again — Joshua Potash Huge crowds of Iranians took to the streets in the aftermath of the general’s death to protest the killing, and his funeral drew an enormous procession. Tehran targeted military sites in Iraq housing US forces in retaliation for the assassination. No American casualties were reported in what was believed to be a show of force by the Iranian authorities.
In 2020’s “Year of the Nurse,” NC Sees Ongoing Shortage
By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. -- The World Health Organization has declared 2020 the “Year of the Nurse” in celebration of Florence Nightingale’s 200th birthday. Nightingale is considered the founder of modern nursing. In North Carolina, healthcare experts say there aren’t enough nurses to keep up with demand. Meka Douthit El is director of nursing at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. She said a swelling patient population is outpacing the supply of nurses. “In North Carolina, it’s 139,000 nurses, and its more people that need to www.desertstarweekly.com
be taken care of,” Douthit El said. “And that’s only in our area. The World Health Organization, you know, noted this is the ‘Year of the Nurse’ because they recognize that it’s a shortage. It’s a global shortage.” According to a report by researchers at Georgetown University, North Carolina is slated to have one of the worst nurse shortages in the country, with nearly 13,000 nurses needed by 2025. Dennis Taylor is an acute care nurse practitioner at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem. He said people often think of nurses in a traditional, hospitalbased role. But he pointed
out they are on the front lines of disease prevention and community-based care. “Nurses work in so many other areas: public health nursing, school nurses, home care, hospice, migrant health, senior centers, longterm care facilities, things like that,” Taylor said. Douthit El added it’s unsustainable to expect hospital emergency rooms to shoulder the health needs of communities, especially in rural areas. She believes changing state law to allow advanced nurse practitioners to practice with autonomy would help boost access to care. “The people that come to January 15, 2020

HOROSCOPES ARIES
You are bold, adventurous and know all about beginnings. We see everything scattered about you, waiting for Taurus to step in with stabilization and anchoring of your ideas. You’re able to accomplish great things if allowed freedom and non-judgment. You surprise everyone. Your desires and aspirations take you on journeys over mountains and plains. One day you sit down and begin to study. It builds your new mind. Love happens.
TAURUS Your companion is Vulcan, husband of Venus. Many see you as the consistent, uncomplex one, driven to care for others, sustaining them unto infinity. However, there’s another side. In the fires of Vulcan, in your service work, you are shaped into gold star of Venus. So often your response to new things is a firm “No”! Many think you’re stubborn, unable to change. What they don’t know is that you’re thinking, assessing, seeking mental illumination before really responding. Aldebaran and Alcyone are your companions.
GEMINI Gemini (mutable), Virgo (mutable) and Aquarius (fixed) are the “people” of the zodiac. You, Gemini, are the twin, Virgo, the mother, and Aquarius pouring the “heavenly waters for thirsty humanity.”You provide the original matrix of learning,

offer the fact of duality, the good & bad, the personality & Soul, matter and Spirit. You create a dialogue, a mystery often, one side (personality) of you dims while the other (Soul) brightens. Your Egyptian god is Thoth. You carry messages. You’re the Magus.
CANCER You are tide-like, moody, different each time we encounter you. You’re protected, shielded and walk crab-like around an object in order to ascertain safety. You’re intuitive but often feelings are so deep they’re unable to be understood. You cook and nurture; find water where others can’t; the moon is your sister; and you remember the past with precision. You want to be close but can’t unlock your shield. Try again.
LEO You are the Solar Lord, no longer lunar. Your contact with the Sun allows a light to be revealed on Earth, a light that humanity seeks and thirsts for. You’re aware of this and not aware of this. The Christ cannot reappear until a certain percentage of the world is illumined. You’re able to radiate light through Right Governing, Right Relations and coming always from the heart. Your work is to, like the Hierarchy, love more.
VIRGO Sometimes you suffer from nervousness, the brilliance
of your thinking overflowing with ideas that hardly any brain can hold. Your mind constantly changes, too, and then you feel unsure of ideas becoming ideals, and you think sometimes you need a new reality of self, one that contains a different level of confidence. Your constellation always hovers over the Bethlehem stable scene. You are holy. You are One.
LIBRA Perhaps there’s something you need to discuss with another? Are you shifting priorities? Are the choices and decisions made months ago, changing again? Relationships are primary working tools for Libra. One day, having learned so much, you live alone for a while. Have you upheld fairness in the past years? So many times, the ideal in your mind cannot meet the reality on Earth. Do you then turn away? Venus loves you.
SCORPIO So often, as fiery water, you can obsess about something or someone. So often you feel you’re dying. And so, you are, though not physically. Instead, experiencing the “burning grounds”, you’re tested nine times, everyone leaves you, and hardly anyone matches your passions. Surrender is a task Scorpios need to learn. Often you cannot hear others, listening as you do to your own emotions. Try. Pluto is your brother.
SAGITTARIUS
You think of yourself as free and easy, but really, you’re traditional, kind-hearted, often hurting since you’re best friends with Chiron, the centaur who was wounded and couldn’t die. Sometimes you feel this way, too. Let me tell you about Sag. Esoterically, you hold an arrow. Its point is a beam of light. It shows the Way to the mountain of Initiation. You’re on a white horse. You hold the reins. Situations occur in your life that stop you in your tracks so you can find your Way back to the light again. You’re often happy. Jupiter loves you.
CAPRICORN Many think of you in one way but deep down there’s another person that some only sense. You act like a traditionalist but are actually a bit of a rebel. You may not show up in person for the revolution, but you’re with them in heart, mind, soul and spirit. You’re an old and ancient sign. You’re the gate through which people can gain spiritual access. You don’t know this. Sometimes people turn away from you. They can’t enter through your gate yet. You understand. Heart to heart.
Aquarian holds a water pot. In that pot are the stars of astrology, the emerging symbols and sounds of creation, the new physics, and the “waters of life the Aquarian pours forth for thirsty humanity.” Aquarians need community. Where is it, they ask? You’re to create it.
PISCES Well, you realize that when you read other people’s interpretation of you (Pisces) it often misses the mark, saying things like Neptune rules you (what does that mean?) and you’re either drunk, confused, illusioned or in despair. But you know life as a Pisces is different. You live in the etheric folds of the universe where the very templates of life are created, filled with starry light beings. You’re one yourself, visiting here for a while. Sorrow you understand. And Light, too. Light of the World. Savior.. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. She can be reached at risagoodwill@gmail.com.

Warner Bros. ‘JOKER’ Is An Oscar Contender
This past Monday, the Motion Picture Academy announced the 2019 Oscar candidates for best picture, director, and actors. One film that garnered praise and nominations in all categories was “Joker,” starring Joaquin Phoenix in the title role. This marks the actor’s fourth Oscar nomination. Note: Phoenix has already won a Golden Globe for his performance. While this Joker is mad and evil, he is also touching and sympathetic, as played by Phoenix, who lost 45 pounds to play the role. He accomplished this by eating just one apple a day until he reached the desired weight. That’s enough to make anyone feel mad and bad. The Joker first made the scene in the 1940s as a comic book villain opposite the heroic Batman, aka Bruce Wayne. However, in “Joker,” written and directed by Todd Phillips, Phoenix stars as the mentally unstable Arthur Fleck, who still lives at home with his mother (Frances Conroy). He is being counseled by a social worker (Sharon Washington) who also monitors medications to
keep him on track. Part of his mental disorder includes uncontrollable fits of laughter. Despite his mental issues, he has a job as a clown. He not only entertains children in hospitals he also works as a sign spinner for a retail store on the mean streets of Gotham. His sign is stolen one afternoon by a group of rowdy boys. When he runs after them to retrieve the property, he is severely beaten. Despite this mishap, he remains sociable. However, his life changes dramatically after a fellow co-worker gives him a gun for protection. Unfortunately for Arthur, when the gun falls out of his pocket while he is entertaining at a children’s party, he’s fired. His ultimate career goal is to be a comic. He does stand up in local comedy clubs and eventually even gets the chance to appear on TV with talk show host Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro). But everything changes when he shoots a young subway rider who attacks him one night. At this point, his life takes a nosedive. “Joker” is dark, sometimes
creepy, and very well acted. “Joker” is rated R for strong bloody violence, disturbing behavior, language, and brief sexual behavior.

Dezart Performs Stages a Poignant Powerful Production of “Daniel’s Husband”
(L-R) David Youse, Deborah Harmon and Michael Shaw in Dezart Performs’ production of DANIEL’S HUSBAND. Photo: David A. Lee By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association Dezart Performs of Palm Springs, celebrates the beginning of its 12th season of producing quality live theatre entertainment in the Coachella Valley, with a shattering, poignant, heart-rending, drama production about Gay marriage that reaches across all gender and identity lines. Love is the most powerful emotion on this planet. Its reach has no limits, stretching forever, touching, and capturing everyone in its path. An anthem for both gay and straight people could easily be found in the music of Leonard Bernstein and in the lyrics of Stephen Sondheim’s iconic musical “West Side Story” punctuated by a poignant duet sung by Anita and Maria, that best sums it up with “…when love comes along, there is no right or wrong.” Words and a philosophy to live by. The country’s legal system finally legalized gay marriage in 2015. Gays all over the world celebrated this historic moment. In the award-winning play, “Daniel’s Husband,” insightfully written by Florida-based playwright Michael McKeever whose sharply observed play of gay partners in short or long committed relationships, comes into sharper focus by following two couples: successful architect Daniel Bixby (a terrific Michael Shaw) and his partner Mitchell, (a mesmerizing (David Youse) who collectively just suck all of the oxygen out of the on-stage acting space with their flawless performances. More about the cast later. There isn’t a weak moment or a misstep by this outstanding cast and/or the creative technical team led by director Darin Anthony. Case in point: the beautiful set design by Thomas L. Valach, drew such remarks from audience members as “I’m ready to move into that home right now.”” to “I’s just gorgeous.” It is indeed, and one of the most elegant and functional designs that fits so perfectly onto the intimate Palm

Springs Woman’s Club stage that I’ve seen in a long time. My reviewing critic/ colleague Bonnie Gilgallon of the CV Independent, nails the appeal of this play in her excellent review of “Daniel’s Husband” when she references the “flawless” quality and the powerful impact of the entire production. I couldn’t agree more with her assessment. In the world of theatre, there is no substitute for quality writing. It galvanizes and energizes the performances of everyone in the production, elevating all of the floating boats in the harbor, so to speak. When actors are presented with a terrific property, they respond in kind, which becomes a huge benefit for the audience. And that is precisely what we have with this impressive Dezart Performs’ production of “Daniel’s Husband.” The performances from this gifted ensemble cast is what every critic wishes for before we settle into our seats. Theatre is the art of telling a tale so compellingly that one cannot take one’s eyes off the stage and/or certain characters. Everyone, cast crew, and audience are fully

engaged in what is unfolding on the Dezart Performs stage night after night. That’s the gold standard and goal to which every theatre company aspires. The vision of director Darin Anthony enriches this production with his many wonderful directorial touches. And that’s not as easy as it sounds. Remember, Anthony has four award-winning actor/directors in his cast to contend with when it comes to making important decisions. Yes, theatre is first and foremost, a collaborative art form, and professionals always adhere to the one director rule in a production. However, I sure would have enjoyed being a fly on the wall during rehearsals. Spirited discussions, no doubt, abounded during their rehearsals among five directors. Michael Shaw, as Daniel, a successful architect, delivers a memorable and deeply affecting performance as the partner who aches to be married. Mitchell, an equally successful author, and partner of seven years with Daniel doesn’t believe in gay marriage as an institution, is brilliantly played by David Youse, in a highly nuanced tour de force performance. The play begins with a
dinner party with another gay couple. Barry Dylon, Mitchell’s agent (solidly portrayed by Chuck Yates), and Barry’s new, 20 something, wide-eyed boy toy Trip (Hanz Enyeart). Over drinks Trip innocently asks Mitchell, you two seem to just be made for each other. Why don’t you get married? The comment sets Mitchell off on his standard tirade on the efficacy of gay marriage. “Why do we need a piece of paper to prove we love one another” is the rhetorical question Mitchell tosses out whenever pushed to tie the knot. Daniel, however, sits stone-faced, as Barry calmly observes the scene with the knowledge that his client is a will of the wisp when it comes to settling down. Living together with Daniel? Yes. Legally married to Daniel? No. It’s the only bone of contention in their relationship. When the doorbell suddenly rings, the tension in the air quickly dissipates. Daniel’s mother, Lydia Bixby (Deborah Harmon), makes a grand entrance dressed to the nines slyly claiming she just wanted to see how her “two boys” were doing before going off to a previous engagement.
Ms. Harmon’s portrayal of a waspish, controlling mother whose only concerns in life are all about her, is spot-on. What could possibly go wrong when Mitchell’s prospective mother-in-law is just dropping by to see how two adult men are doing? Plenty. Stay tuned. But no spoiler alerts from me at this point. But what I can say is the following. The first 15 minutes of the play unfolds as a comedy, peppered with terrific dialogue ala Neil Simon like zingers aplenty; however, it shifts into a drama of consequence later on and right up to the end. The play is performed without an intermission and runs approximately 90 minutes. This impressive production is produced by Michael Shaw and sound designer Clark Dugger. It is also one of their finest productions over the last eleven years, which I suspect will be taking home several Desert Theatre League (DTL) Stars Award trophies come October of 2020. “Daniel’s Husband” performs on the Pearl MacManus stage in the Woman’s Club of Palm Springs and runs through January 19th. It’s a Must-See Show!

Desert Jet Center Opens In Thermal
Desert Jet’s new terminal at sunset (Credit: Desert Jet) By Pamela Price Desert Jet Center in Thermal, CA, opened its fullservice 32,500 square foot facility with Jared Fox, Chief Executive Officer just in time for 2020 travelers. Whether you are contemplating a flight to Las Vegas or Chicago, here’s the ideal almost too good to be true alternative to a regular airline ticket, convoluted airline points, and the nightmare of long lines that have made the TSA and aviation exercise in patience. The Jet Center is on alert to make your flight a pleasure. TSA trauma aside, this is the Coachella Valley’s first and only fixed-base operator (FBO). Making this even more impressive is this their 22,500 sq. Ft hangar having the distinction of being the desert’s only air-conditioned solar-powered hangar powered by clean solar energy. Founded in 2007 as an aircraft charter, management, and acquisition company, Desert Jet gradually increased in size and service to accommodate the desert’s increase in tourism and business. Previously, private flyers had depended on the resources of Los Angeles professionals while paying a premium for the repositioning of aircraft to the desert for their travel needs During this time Desert Jet was flying high while gaining momentum with ambitious plans to construct a terminal reflecting the growing demands of private jet service. Combining this with the convenience and comfort of a terminal serving the needs of business aviation with ground services that include repair, on-site maintenance supported by a staff of factory-trained certified professionals was a top priority. Today a variety of aircraft from the Cessna Citation Bravo seating seven passengers to the Bombardier Challenger 300 seating ten passengers capable of flying coast to coast have proven to be time-saving and cost-effective. With the 2015 R40 tour marking the Canadian band’s farewell tour, “R40” is an excellent showcase for a troupe captured while still at the top of their game. The centerpiece is how the stage is given the “de-evolution” treatment as the band performs their most recent material on a more dazzling set; as the band performs increasinglyolder songs, the stage is stripped down courtesy of stagehands who recast Rush’s surroundings artfully during the performance. Information: amazon.com. Artist: Rush Title: Clockwork Angels (Roadrunner Records) Tell me more: While many classic rock fans have to be content with their heroes touring courtesy of nostalgia alone, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart continued to challenge themselves and their listeners with sharp and searing prog rock until the end. “Clockwork Angels,” the band’s final studio album, was released in June 2012 and is a concept album about a young man’s search to follow his dreams. It doesn’t hurt that the probing tale was supported by one of the trio’s most accessible and compelling collections since “2112.” Information: Rush.com. Artist: Rush Title: Feedback (Atlantic Records) Tell me more: A fun detour in the history of Rush was 2004’s “Feedback,” an eighttrack EP of rock ‘n’ roll classics that Rush covered with obvious zeal. In the album’s liner notes,
Peart notes: “It was April of 2004, but Geddy, Alex, and I were channeling back to 1966 and 1967, when we were thirteen- and fourteen-yearold beginners. We thought it would be a fitting symbol to commemorate our thirty years together if we returned to our roots and paid tribute to those we had learned from and were inspired by... The music celebrates a good time in our lives, and we had a good time celebrating it.” Indeed, the songs here explode anew in the capable hands of Rush. “Summertime Blues” kicks off the exciting set, with Rush offering up a shimmering remake of Blue Cheer’s hard rock cover (the song was written by Eddie Cochran and his manager Jerry Capehart in 1958). Other notable offerings include fiery takes on The Who’s “The Seeker,” Neil Young’s “Mr. Soul” and Cream’s blues rocker “Crossroads.” The nuanced take on Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” also amazes. This is truly a side of Rush never heard before. Information: Rush.com.

Democratic establishment & MSM panic as Sanders surges into lead
By Desert Star Staff The US political and media establishment is belatedly lashing out at “democratic socialist” presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders, who has taken the lead in polls by laying into the Democratic Party elite’s bland corporate centrism. “Democrats had better attack Sanders before it’s too late!” Monday’s Daily Beast headline may be hyperbole, but it accurately expressed the mood of the party’s centrist establishment. Independent Vermont Senator Sanders is running for president as a Democrat, and has promised to back the Democratic nominee should he fail to secure the top prize. But that’s cold comfort to the party elite, who are beginning to worry after a poll published on Monday showed the unabashed leftist in first place in Iowa, with less than a month to go before that state holds its influential caucus. Nor is that the only state Sanders appears poised to win. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren – who has tried to position her campaign as a more moderate, pragmatic version of Sanders’ progressive platform – has charged to the party’s rescue, latching onto a fundraising script allegedly used by the Sanders campaign that described her supporters as “highly educated, more affluent people.” Portraying her constituents thus equates to “trashing her,” she told reporters when confronted
with the script on Sunday. Warren then went on to use it as the basis of a fundraising email pleading for “unity.” Such a dumb controversy. In a new fundraising email, multi-millionaire fmr. Harvard law professor/renowned academic Elizabeth Warren claims her campaign is being smeared by Sanders volunteers noting that her base is generally more affluent and educated than the VT Senator’s — Walker Bragman While Warren condemned Sanders for injecting “factionalism” into the contest, statistics don’t lie – she is more popular among the “educated and rich.” At the same time, Sanders enjoys more support among poorer voters and those without a college education. How dare 538 smear Elizabeth Warren by pointing out the demographic breakdown of her support?! Such divisiveness... — Walker Bragman Only in the rarefied climate of the Democratic primary would “educated and rich” even be considered an insult - the fundraising email sent by a campaign staffer for Harvard professor Warren also insisted that the phrase “doesn’t describe me or many of the passionate volunteers and organizers I know.” But 2020 is not a normal election, and after the ‘catastrophe’ of 2016, the Democrats are not a regular party. The centrist faction that triumphed over Sanders to run
(and lose) with Hillary Clinton is locked in a battle with the leftist faction he represents – a mostly younger and scrappier group, determined not to let ‘electability’ trump principles this time around. Sanders responded to Warren’s “disappointment” by claiming he’d never personally said anything negative against her, explaining that with “hundreds of employees… people sometimes say things they shouldn’t.” A Sanders volunteer even hinted at a conspiracy to smear the campaign, suggesting “anyone” could dump a negative script into the chat volunteers used. #ITrustBernie was trending on Monday as Sanders fans pledged their support after Warren’s attack. Sanders’ ‘small-s’ socialism has won him enormous popular support. He broke Democratic fourth-quarter fundraising records earlier
this month and has so far raised over $96 million in small donations, eschewing the large corporate donors he has said he wants out of electoral politics altogether. His (in) famous claim that “billionaires should not exist” and plans to redistribute their wealth have ruffled some influential feathers in a party kept afloat by billionaires, however, and the establishment media has redoubled its own attacks as Sanders surges in the polls. The New York Times published a lengthy interview with the candidate on Monday, framing the piece by reminding the reader of his recent heart attack and his support for leftist political movements “plagued” with “corruption and even violence.” Peppered throughout Sanders’ responses are links contradicting his claims, even “fact-checking” his reference to having been interviewed by the Times before (“All but
three members of the current editorial board joined after Mr. Sanders’s endorsement interview in 2015,” it sniffs). The outlet hints that he is on the payroll of Big Vape (“campaign finance reports reveal that the Sanders campaign has accepted donations from Juul Labs employees”) attempts to frame his observation that exploitation of migrant workers drives wages down as anti-immigrant rhetoric, and makes much of his unfamiliarity with social media and smartphone apps (because he’s old, get it?!). But current polling puts Sanders ahead of Trump in an electoral face-off - only Biden can say the same, and his numbers have been sliding so fast the political establishment has preemptively started blaming Russia. For once, the Democratic Party may have to choose between the lesser of two evils.
Mexico issues yellow alert after Popocatepetl volcano erupts spectacularly
By Desert Star Staff One of Mexico’s most active volcanoes, Popocatepetl, erupted on Thursday morning, spewing ash high into the air above and showering lava around its crater. Officials have issued a yellow alert in response to the volcanic activity. Dramatic footage of the moments of eruption were
caught on camera at around 6.30am local time. Officials say the volcanic blast sent up a column of smoke about 3 kilometers high, with a moderate ash content. Mexican authorities issued a ‘level 2’ yellow alert in the immediate aftermath of Thursday’s eruption, warning people in the surrounding area to cover their mouth and nose
with a mask or handkerchief for protection against volcanic ash in the air, to keep windows closed, and to wear glasses instead of contact lenses. The public is being advised “not to approach the volcano.” Residents in nearby Atlautla and Mexico City posted impressive images online of the smoke rising above Popocatépetl at dawn.
Panelists Warn of Small-Business Perils in CCPA
Will January 1 start date of new law be a green light for consumer attorneys? SACRAMENTO, Calif., —California’s Main Street, mom-and-pop enterprises should not be lured into a false sense of comfort by the California Consumer Privacy Act’s $25 million in annual sales threshold when the law takes effect next week, according to three panelists speaking at December 6

issues forum in Napa. One of the panelists, John Kabateck, California state director for NFIB, said that while most small businesses will never meet the sales threshold, another component of the law, the collection of 50,000 pieces of consumer data is fraught with potential harm to small firms.
Kabateck said the 50,000 breaks down to 137 transactions a day, which “could very well be a restaurant in Napa or a food truck in Los Angeles if they retain consumer information for use.” Another panelist, Margaret Gladstein of Capitol Advocacy, said, “a video January 15, 2020
or something that goes viral could hit that 50,000 thresholds very quickly even if [a small business] didn’t have the 137 hits a day. Rachel Michelin of the California Retailers Association, the third panelist, forewarned that consumer attorneys “are ready to pounce, and I think they will go after anyone they can go after to see what they can get.”
Reporters and editors working on new-laws-takingeffect stories or who are making the CCPA part one of their permanent watch subjects are encouraged to give the video a view. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. Small OR Town in Big Fight Over Facebook’s Undersea Cable Plans By Desert Star Staff TIERRA DEL MAR, Ore. -- Residents of a small, coastal Oregon town are continuing to fight Facebook’s plan to install a landing spot for the tech giant’s undersea cable. Tierra del Mar is an unincorporated city in Tillamook County that is so small, it doesn’t have cell-phone service or fire hydrants. Facebook’s cable would help connect Asia to North America. Cameron La Follette, executive director of the Oregon Coast Alliance, said Tierra del Mar is a rural, residential area, and Tillamook County ordinances allow land-use installations similar to a public utility. “This is not similar to a public utility,” La Follette said. “The citizens of Tillamook County are not going to benefit from this cable, Facebook has made that clear
in their testimony. They just want to place the landing there because it’s convenient.” The Tillamook County Board of Commissioners approved Facebook’s plan last week in a vote of 2-1. La Follette said residents have 21 days to appeal the decision to the Land Use Board of Appeals. A Facebook spokesperson said the company has engaged with the community over the past year and addressed concerns about noise, environmental impact and road closures. At the board of commissioners meeting, the company said drilling for the landing will last for about a month and all that will remain is a manhole cover. La Follette said local residents are still concerned about the disturbance drilling will cause. She also noted there’s a larger concern this could open the door for

Winners of the 2020 North American Car, Utility and Truck of the Year
By Desert Star Staff DETROIT, Jan. 2020 After hundreds of hours of test drives, research and evaluation by independent jurors, the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Kia Telluride, and Jeep Gladiator were revealed as the winners of the 2020 North American Car, Utility and Truck of the Year (NACTOY) awards at TCF Center in Detroit. These awards are unique and among the most prestigious in the industry because they are chosen by a panel of 50 respected jurors from print, online, radio and broadcast media across the U.S. and Canada – rather than by a single publication or media outlet. Jurors voted on the finalists based on segment leadership, innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar. The process began in June 2019 with the determination of vehicle eligibility and included three rounds of voting. Votes were tallied confidentially by Deloitte LLP and remained secret until envelopes were unsealed on stage by NACTOY President Lauren Fix, Vice President Chris Paukert, and Secretary-Treasurer Kirk Bell.
“These awards would not be possible without the hard work, professionalism, and insight of all of our jurors along with the cooperation throughout the year from all of the automotive companies,” Fix said. “Now, in our 26th year, we are proud that both automakers and consumers recognize the value our awards provide to new car buyers.” Car of the Year Overall, U.S. car sales might be declining, but there was no shortage of compelling, innovative contenders this year. When the ballots were counted, jurors selected Chevrolet Corvette Stingray as the car that stood out among its competition. “A mid-engine Corvette was a huge risk for Chevy’s muscle-car icon. They nailed it. Stunning styling, interior, and performance for one-third of the cost of comparable European exotics,” said Henry Payne, auto critic for The Detroit News. Utility Vehicle of the Year In the increasingly popular utility segment, automakers must look for that magical combination of design, features, and functionality. This year, jurors decided the Kia
Telluride deserved top honors. “The Telluride’s interior layout and design would meet luxury SUV standards, while its refined drivetrain, confident driving dynamics, and advanced technology maintain the premium experience,” said Karl Brauer, Executive Publisher at Cox Automotive. “Traditional SUV brands take note: there’s a new star player on the field.” Truck of the Year The truck category reflected the growing popularity of mid-size vehicles as the Ford Ranger and Jeep Gladiator squared off against the Ram Heavy Duty. Ultimately, jurors selected the Jeep Gladiator as the winner. “What’s not to like about a pickup truck with not only
a soft-top removable roof but even removable doors? If you want massive cargo-hauling capability or the ability to tow 10,000 pounds, buy something else,” said longtime automotive journalist John Voelcker. “The eagerly awaited Gladiator is a one-of-a-kind truck, every bit the Jeep its Wrangler sibling is ... but with a pickup bed. How could you possibly get more American than that?” Today’s winners were chosen from the following nine finalists: Car of the Year: Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Hyundai Sonata Toyota Supra

7 ag-focused ways to get involved By Desert Star Staff From the food on your table to the clothes on your back, agriculture provides a variety of things you eat, wear and use daily. Those items don’t magically arrive at the store or appear in your home, however. Each American farmer feeds about 165 people, according to the Agriculture Council of America, an organization comprised of leaders in the agriculture, food and fiber communities dedicated to increasing public awareness of agriculture’s role in modern society. Learning more about the industry can allow individuals to make more informed choices about everything from their diets to legislation. In honor of the 47th annual National Ag Day with the theme “Food Brings Everyone to the Table,” consider these activities that can help you learn more about how the agriculture industry impacts daily life. Dutch Drama/Thriller Screens at Palm Springs International Film Festival By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association The Dutch film industry has a solid reputation of producing bold and audacious movies. They’re not intimidated by nor feel the heat generated by risky subject matter or filmic conventions. Dutch films have also won Best Foreign Language Hollywood film Oscars. Dutch filmmaker Mike van Diem nabbed the 1987 Oscar for his powerful
gritty drama “Character”. I had the opportunity, in 1987, to interview him here in Palm Springs, at the now Regal 9 theatres, then known as the Courtyard Theatre, during the screening of his Oscar submitted 1987 drama. I told him he was going to win the Oscar for “Character”. He thanked me, but demurred on my prediction, however, it did win. It just had Oscar winner look written all over it. This year another Dutch film is in the Oscar hunt again. This time it is a powerful, psychological, provocative
thriller called “Instinct”. It’s set in a prison where a newly arrived, experienced psychologist Nicoline, (rivetingly played by Carice van Houten) is assigned to the case file of serial sex offender Idris (a clever psychopath scarily portrayed by Marwan Kenzari). After five years of treatment, Idris is about to be granted his first unaccompanied probation. While his team of therapists are enthusiastic about his progress, Nicoline’s instincts tell her not to trust him. When she attempts to block his probation, he begins a campaign to convince her of his good intentions, but slowly and surely he demonstrates the frightening manipulative behavior she saw in him from the beginning. A power play now emerges between these two “adversaries” and, in spite of her knowledge and experience, Nicoline finds herself in a trap of her own making. As an audience member one

will find themselves thinking why doesn’t she just ask to be reassigned or transfer all together to a new facility if she feels threatened or in danger? Well, if all screenwriters and directors thought this way, we wouldn’t have many thrillers to scare the be-jeepers out of us, now would we? ‘Don’t go down that dark alley it’s 3 AM’. But of course they always do. The old adage, ‘the proof of the pudding is the eating of it’; applies here. The screenplay directed by well- known Dutch actress Halina Reijn, is a highly erotic and steamy story to pull off for a first time maiden voyage filmmaker. However, Ms. Reijn delivers the goods and so do her fabulous two leading actors. “Instinct” contains some highly emotional sex scenes that could be labeled, by some, as “soft porn” due to the way the film is photographed. But the scenes are the fuel that drives the story’s suggested ambivalence as to
Nicoline’s character and her emotional state. Carise van Houten as Nicoline might be remembered from “Game of Thrones”, but as Caroline, she delivers a wonderfully nuanced performance that runs the emotional gamut from A to Z. It’s a star turn. Marwan Kenzari as Idris, is chillingly accurate in his portrayal as a serial sex predator whose soft- speaking, low key performance belies the rage seething inside him. Psychopaths must always get their own way or they rebel in punishing ways. The deliberate slow measured pacing by director Heijn heightens the tensions of all – both actors and the audience - in this impressive thriller from the Netherlands. Check the 92nd Oscar Nominations List announcement when it come out on February. I wouldn’t be surprised to find “Instinct” on the Oscar short list for foreign films come February 9th.
CARAMELIZED SWEET ONION HUMMUS Ingredients: 1 whole garlic head 4 tablespoons, plus 1 teaspoon, extra-virgin olive oil, divided 1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced 1 can (15 ounces) chickpeas 1 tablespoon lemon juice (about 1/2 lemon) 1/2 cup tahini (toasted ground sesame seeds) 1 teaspoon salt Directions: Heat oven to 350 F. Cut top of garlic head off and place cutside down on pan; drizzle with 1 teaspoon olive oil. Bake 20-30 minutes, or until garlic is soft. Once cool, squeeze garlic from each clove. In large skillet over medium-high heat, cook onion in 1 tablespoon olive oil. Stir onion frequently until slices begin to brown. Reduce heat to low and continue cooking until onions are soft and reach medium brown color. Rinse and drain chickpeas; reserve 3 tablespoons liquid. In food processor, blend chickpeas, reserved liquid, lemon juice, tahini, garlic, salt, remaining olive oil and onions until combined and smooth. Serve with pita bread, veggies or crackers.
