characters as Ernestine, the cranky telephone operator, and Edith Ann, an amusing 6-year-old in a giant rocking chair. Story and Photos by Pat Krause Fred “The Hammer” Williamson held his 6th annual Wounded Warrior Project Celebrity golf tournament and pairing’s party at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino on January 9th and 10th. The Pairings Party was held on the 12th floor Wine Bar and was by invitation only for the players and guests the night before the golf tournament. Fred got his ‘A’ list of Celebrity players from his friends that included many sports names, some from the Hall of Fame in Baseball and Football. Other celebrities were actors and actresses, Musicians, Local TV anchors and even a former boxing champion. These celebrities are always on board to help with the Wounded Warrior Project that gives aid to our wounded service men and women. The project honors and empowers our Wounded Warriors that incurred injuries on or after the horrific attack on September 11, 2001. The golf tournament was held on January 10th at the Eagle Falls Golf Course at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. There was an awards party in LIT after golf. This is a big fundraiser for Wounded Warrior Project that gives a helping hand as they adjust to their new life after their injuries.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 387th Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars was awarded to Tim Hanlon. Hanlon is the President of Wells Fargo Foundation and an Executive Vice President of Wells Fargo. Hanlon has been with Wells Fargo for over 32 years. He has served on the board at the Palm Springs international Film Festival, Hispanic Scholarship Fund and Center Theatre Group. Hanlon has been an advocate for HIV/Aids in the valley for prevention and education of the disease. Mr. Hanlon has led Wells Fargo in providing more than 17 million dollars to local AIDS related causes during the last decade. He has chaired many charities such as the Film Festival, One Night Only and the 2007 Steve Chase Humanitarian Award Gala. Mr. Hanlon’s Star rests at 200 South Palm Canyon Drive in front of LuLu’s restaurant. Many Friends and family were on hand to witness the dedication ceremony of the placing of the Star on January 5, 2015. Speakers included Barbara Keller, Mayor Steve Pougnet, David Brinkman and Former Mayor Ron Odin to name a few. Mr. Hanlon spoke from the heart when he thanked all the people that attended and named a few people that put him on the path of philanthropy.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Screening of “Don Quixote: The Ingenious Gentleman of La Mancha: on January 7th brought out the Actor, James Franco, to the Red Carpet and a Q&A after the film. He brought with him actors Carmen Argenziano, Horatio Sanz, Reinaldo Zavarce, Anthony Skordi and Steve Bannos. He also brought the 10 directors of the film with him. The 10 directors are students of James Franco at USC. Franco was thrilled the film got into the Film Festival, and many films produced by students at USC never get shown to a large audience. Mr. Franco wanted to be photographed with his students on the Red Carpet. He talked to local TV crews and media before heading into the watch the film with the cast and directors. Authors and Producers also attending the Q&A after the film to tell a bit about how the film was made, an unusual film that has 10 listed directors. Mr. Franco was so proud of the students as the film was very good with some veteran actors portraying the characters within the film.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Closing night Film and Gala were the culmination of an extraordinary 11 days of the Palm Springs International Film Festival. This festival is one of the most successful so far. The whole city opens up to bring this festival to its glory. Hotels, restaurants, transportation, TV, Radio, Newspapers and magazines all work to make this festival possible. The closing night film, Boychoir had Dustin Hoffman in the lead with a new young talent, Garrett Wireing, as the young boy singer and was filled with beautiful music by the many young choirboys in the film. An after party was held at the Renaissance Palm Springs Hotel for all those attending the closing night film. There were about 400 screenings of the films from 65 countries. Over 130,000 people attended these screenings that were shown at multiple theatres in 9km;Palm Springs. There were 126 sponsors for the Festival and close to 1000 volunteers. The Festival has a year-round staff and a number of board of directors and programmers. None of this could be possible without the help of all these individuals and businesses. Underwriters made the gala probably which drew a record number of 2,400 guests and is always sold out early. The films are a window on the lives and different worlds other than our own. The creativity of the writers and directors and storytellers leaves a lasting impression on the whole Valley. They put their hearts and souls into every single project and film. The A list of celebrities who come to walk the Red Carpet and arrive to help promote their films is impressive as well as the many that are given awards the night of the Gala. The many directors who are proud of their films attended Q&As to answer questions from the guests. The directors, producers, actors and writers come from all parts of our world to our Valley for the PSIFF. The Golden Globes have been held and many of the choices at the PSIFF were big winners, from actors to directors to films. This shows how important our Film Festival is in the industry and how great the programmers are at picking only the best to be shown here. It takes months of watching films to be able to choose the ones they think are the best for the PSIFF. They have a proven record on their ability to pick winners of Golden Globes and Oscars. In January-An Entertaining Look Back and Forward It is said that the month of January is named after the twofaced Roman god Janus, with one face looking back at the old year while the other face gazes into the future. In that spirit, for this column, I will take a look back and forwards at the wonderful world of entertainment here in Southern California as we begin 2015. For me the New Year began with a “Salute to Vienna” at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. It

is performed in the local area every January for one day only, and seeing the show is like a mini musical visit to Vienna, a city of dreams. Next year, if you want to travel to Vienna sans passport, mark your 2016 Entertainment calendar and check off this Viennese bonbon. This year the singers were Thomas Weinhappel (baritone), Lilla Galambos (soprano) and Eugene Amesmann (tenor). All three were in great voice and high spirits under the direction of conductor Niels Muus. The music was ‘lustig’ with Strauss waltzes and music from operettas like “Die Fledermaus” and Franz Lehar’s “The Merry Widow.” Two dance companies also performed with grace, style and flourishes of humor. Seeing “A Salute to Vienna” was great fun and a great way to begin 2015. Looking forward, on Thursday, January 22, Shen Yun will perform at the Dolby Theater (formerly the Kodak) 6801 Hollywood Blvd. through Sunday, Jan. 25. It will then move to Northridge on Jan. 27 and 28 at the Valley Performing Arts Center, and from Jan. 29 to 31 at the Segerstrom Center in Orange County. For tickets and information go to www.ShenYun. com/LA or phone 800-880-0188 Shen Yun has received high praise from critics around the world and features a cast of 60 dancers and 40 musicians who bring audiences 5,000 years of Chinese culture, presented in one magical evening of music and dance. Sadly, while this lavish production is touring the world, it has not been allowed to be seen in China itself. The ideas for Shen Yun began in 2006 when Chinese artists gathered in New York and developed the concept for this lavish show. Now five companies travel around the world and present Shen Yun on four continents. The people of China have long believed that their culture was a gift from heaven and that art was the primary way to explore the connection between humanity and the higher universe. In one evening the 100 performers in the Shen Yun company take their audiences on a journey of 5,000 years as they present a musical and dance tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends and heroic stories. Once again, no passport is needed to go on this beautiful, artistic journey. In 2014 I saw Noel Coward’s charming period comedy,”Blithe Spirit,” at the Ahmanson, starring Angela Lansbury in her TonyAward-winning role as Madam Arcati. She is amazing as a medium who conjures up the late wife of a novelist. At 89 she is still

a true crowd-pleaser. Everything about this production is excellent, from cast to sets and costumes. The show ends on Jan. 18, so there is still time to enjoy it. As for movies, one of my personal favorites was “Into The Woods,” based on the Stephen Sondheim musical of the same name. A fairytale for adults, the film stars Emily Blunt as the Baker’s wife, Meryl Streep as the witch, Johnny Depp as the wolf and Chris Pine as Prince Charming. It opened on Christmas Day, 2014, is a contender for Golden Globes and may also be in the race when Oscar time rolls around. January 16, 2015

Other excellent films from 2014 include “The Imitation Game,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightly. This stunning drama tells the true story of how one man saved countless millions of lives by figuring out how to break the German Code during WWII. “Time Magazine” calls Cumberbatch’s performance “the best performance of the year.” Other excellent films, based on real characters, include “The Theory of Everything” about Stephen Hawking and “Unbroken,” Angelina Jolie’s tribute to war hero and Olympic

athlete Louis Zamparini Coming to DVD in January: “The Boxtrolls,” from the creators of the Academy Awardnominated films “Coraline” and “Paranorman,” will be available on Blu-ray and DVD on Jan. 20.The animated film has been nominated for 13 Annie Awards and will probably be nominated for an animated film Oscar. On Jan. 27 “Fury,” starring Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf, arrives on Blu-ray and DVD. The powerful war drama. set in 1945, has been hailed as “a film that grabs you and never lets go,” by Peter Travers, “Rolling Stone.

PSIFF Closes with Class and Worldwide Contacts

By Pam Price “Good-bye Winter, Hello World.” It says on a Palm Springs International Festival postcard as awards and farewells marked the close of their 26th Annual Festival. At a reception honoring French-speaking films, (the invitation read, “Palm Springs Speaks French”) held at

the Riviera Hotels Circa 59 on January 9; sponsors mingled with filmmakers and invited guests. The event brought together an international crowd along with Consulate General of Switzerland in Los Angeles, JeanFrancois Lichtenstern, he noted Switzerland premiered two films at the Festival, What’s Between

Us and Unlikely Heros. Mingling on the Riviera’s patio, overlooking their lavish lighted pool, there were others representing the film world, the Consulate General of the Kingdom of Belgium, the French Embassy, the Los Angeles Film and TV Office, TV5Monde and the Quebec delegation from Los Angeles.

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic For all those cineastes who miss seeing work from the likes of Eugene Ionesco and Samuel Beckett, and the rest of the “theatre of the absurd” gang, take heart. The new Israeli dark dramedy film “Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem” is a worthy semantics-laden candidate to warm the cockles of your heart. The melodrama cleverly written and directed by the brother-sister team of Ronit Elkabertz and Shlomi Elkabertz introduces to non-Israeli audiences the complicated nature of its legal system concerning marriage and divorce. In theocracies, religious law trumps all varieties of civil law procedures that are common in most other countries. In Israel there is neither civil marriage nor civil divorce. Only rabbis can legitimize a

marriage or a dissolution. But this dissolution is only possible with the full consent of the husband (oh,oh), and herein lies the story and plotline of the movie. The film opens in a courtroom setting where Viviane Amsalem (Ronit Elkabertz) has been applying for a divorce from her husband Elisha (Sasson Gabai) for three years. She is represented by her lawyer Carmel Ben-Tovim (Menashe Noy), who presents her case and legal papers to a three rabbi tribunal led by head rabbi (Eli Gorenstein). These three gentlemen will eventually adjudicate Viviane’s petition. Needless to say, all parties are extremely frustrated after three years of continuances, and delays as all wait to bring closure to Viviane’s petition. Everyone that is, except Elisha, Viviane’s husband, who keeps saying No, I don’t want a divorce. The

main sticking point is Elisha’s continuing refusal to agree to the divorce. He just keeps saying “no” every time the rabbinical court tries to bring an agreement to the proceedings. He has been placed in jail for contempt of court rulings, but each time when the case begins again, he merely says “No” and it’s back to square one. Under the law Elisha has more power than the rabbinical court. Witnesses come and go and the trial keeps being delayed in order for the court and the parties involved “to agree” to Viviane’s petition. If you thought American lawyers were “continuance happy”, wait until you observe an Israeli rabbinical court in action. Semantics and Talmudic scholarly exchanges take place as the tribunal argue among themselves as to how to proceed. It’s an eye opening experience for Western cultured democracies.

A French inspired buffet included oversized pretzels with a tangy mustard sauce, a nod to the German-speaking films, perhaps? Not far from the Riviera Hotel’s event was another, that same evening was one, literally splashed with color. This was the long awaited opening reception at Lon Michels Gallery at 1003, N.Palm Canyon, which attracted nearly 500 art fans according to Lon and his partner Todd Olson. Roy Smith’s mixed media drawings were on the show along with the inimitable paintings of Wisconsin native; Lon Michel has brought across the desert. His canvases are larger than in life, reinforced by his latest work in progress, “Las Meninas”, which, he said is “my homage to Diego Vazquez,” a Spanish painter and leading artist in the Court of King Philip IV, who painted the original Las Meninas in 1656. Inspired by this classic completed during the Spain’s Golden Age, Lon Michels uses the primary painting in a big way. Take this literally, the canvas he is painting is eight by ten feet; when its debut arrives, art lovers will discover several local personalities, including Grace Robbins and Angela Romero, artfully painted

by Lon Michels. Indians, Blackhawks in Epic Battle For First Place Daniel Marinelli PALM SPRINGS – On December 5, Palm Springs High School Indians football program proved they are among the best in California by taking home the CIF championship. Now a little over a month later, after defeating the preseason league favorite La Quinta Blackhawks (2-1 in DVL, 9-5 Overall) last Friday, the Indians (3-0 in DVL, 11-2 Overall) basketball team is also showing its capability of winning the DVL and possibly matching their football brethren with a CIF title of their own. Heading into the game at Palm Springs High School, the Blackhawks and Indians were tied for first atop the DVL with records of 2-0. Indians shooting guard John Rich owned the first quarter and the game; in fact, the six-foot-one junior had 10 points in the first quarter and 15 in the first half. With a down year in the DVL and a talented senior-stacked team, the Blackhawks came into the 2015 season with high expectations. La Quinta went 7-1 to start the season but are a long way away from reaching full potential, going 2-4 in the six games prior to the first place tiebreaker with the Indians. The Blackhawks have some work to do before living up to all the preseason hype and the work needed was on display in the first half against the Indians. Failing to get a bucket until 3:21 remained in the first quarter, the Blackhawks looked scared and timid in the league’s first measuring-stick game for the two schools. The Indians, however, looked primed and ready take a firm grasp on the top spot. Behind Rich’s 15, the Indians leapt out to a controlling 30-16

halftime score, but it did not last. Senior big man Kameron Dashner scored six points and snatched five rebounds in the third but the Blackhawks defense is what whittled the Indians’ lead. La Quinta outscored Palm Springs 14-7 in the third quarter and led 37-30 after three. The game became thriller in the fourth quarter as it turned into the Deondre Hawkins (Indians) and Marcelo Zepeda (Blackhawks) show.
