Desert Jet Center Opens

Desert Jet’s new terminal at sunset (Credit: Desert Jet) By Pamela Price Desert Jet Center in Thermal, CA, opened its fullservice 32,500 square foot facility with Jared Fox, Chief Executive Officer just in time for 2020 travelers. Whether you are contemplating a flight to Las Vegas or Chicago, here’s the ideal almost too good to be true alternative to a regular airline ticket,

convoluted airline points, and the nightmare of long lines that have made the TSA and aviation exercise in patience. The Jet Center is on alert to make your flight a pleasure. TSA trauma aside, this is the Coachella Valley’s first and only fixed-base operator (FBO). Making this even more impressive is this their 22,500 sq. Ft hangar having the

distinction of being the desert’s only air-conditioned solarpowered hangar powered by clean solar energy. Founded in 2007 as an aircraft charter, management, and acquisition company, Desert Jet gradually increased in size and service to accommodate the desert’s increase in tourism and business. Previously, private

flyers had depended on the resources of Los Angeles professionals while paying a premium for the repositioning of aircraft to the desert for their travel needs During this time Desert Jet was flying high while gaining momentum with ambitious plans to construct a terminal reflecting the growing demands of private jet service. Combining this with the

convenience and comfort of a terminal serving the needs of business aviation with ground services that include repair, on-site maintenance supported by a staff of factorytrained certified professionals was a top priority. Today a variety of aircraft from the Cessna Citation Bravo

Sunnylands offers the public free access to the historic estate By Desert Star Staff RANCHO MIRAGE, CA – Sunnylands is giving the public free access to the historic Annenberg estate on Sunday, Jan. 26, to see the 30-foot cedar totem pole that stands on the fifth hole of the Sunnylands golf course. Shuttle rides to the totem pole from Sunnylands Center & Gardens are part of a Family Day event that celebrates the current exhibition, Reach for the Sky: Tradition + Inspiration. The exhibition features the artworks of the late Henry Hunt, a Kwakiutl chief who became one of Canada’s most renowned First Nations’ carvers; his son, Stanley C. Hunt; and his grandson, Jason Hunt. The exhibition blends their pieces with the paintings and sculpture of Grammy winner Herb Alpert, who found inspiration in the Kwakiutl totems he saw on a trip to Vancouver’s

Stanley Park in the 1980s. Sunnylands founders Walter and Leonore Annenberg commissioned Henry Hunt, who was once chief carver at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, British Columbia, to carve “a totem pole of distinction” for their golf course in 1976. Access to the estate’s 200 acres is usually permitted only through the purchase of a tour of the Annenberg home, a bird-watching excursion on the estate, or an outdoor tour of the property. But Family Day attendees who are at least 10 years of age will be able to take a free shuttle ride onto the historic grounds to see the pole that inspired the exhibition. There will be no access to the Annenberg home. Other Family Day activities include: Wood-carving demonstrations by members of the Hunt

family and other artists. Building totems with foam blocks and decorative elements. Learning to carve with soap. A scavenger hunt to search for animals and other symbols found in the exhibition. Writing your own folk tale. Exploring books with exhibition-related topics in the Center. Craft activities, available to guests of all ages from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., are free of charge. No reservations are required. Several activities will be held outdoors in the gardens, weather permitting. Sun protection and water are recommended. Sunnylands Center & Gardens is located at 37977 Bob Hope Drive in Rancho Mirage.

Tips for a successful, lifelong pet adoption By Desert Star Staff Bringing home a new pet can be exciting and heartwarming. Before you get caught up in the excitement of adopting a pet, however, it’s important to do a bit of homework and have conversations to ensure you’re choosing a lifelong fit for your family. When considering adopting, keep in mind that pets can provide as many benefits to you as you do them, such as helping to reduce stress, providing companionship, getting the daily recommended amount of physical activity and more. As you take your options into account, remember these guidelines from the experts at PetSmart Charities to prepare for a successful homecoming for your newest family member. Life Stages: If you prefer a lower energy pet, seek a senior (age 7 or above) who may move a little slower. For higher energy, look for young puppies and kittens or active breeds such as Labradors, hounds, American terriers (commonly known as pit bulls) and mixed breeds. For first-time pet owners, a healthy adult dog or cat can help teach new pet parents the joys of having a pet and may not require as much attention as a puppy or kitten. Families with young children might consider a family-friendly breed or mixed breed such as a hound. Older kids may benefit from additional responsibilities such as walking the dog or cleaning the litter box.

Living Environment: In addition to the type and age of pet you adopt, you’ll need to consider the space you have available to welcome your furry friend. If you live in a home, consider fencing your yard for more relaxed playtime. If you live in an apartment, discuss any restrictions with your landlord and find out where the closest dog parks are to ensure your dog gets plenty of exercise. Dogs need a place to call their own where they’re contained overnight and while you’re not home until they can be safely left to roam. Get a crate so your new pet can have an ‘apartment’ within your home. You should always have more litter boxes than you do cats; for example, if you have one cat make sure you have at least two litter boxes. Litter boxes need to be scooped daily and completely changed weekly. Veterinary Care: Most adoptions come with a free veterinary check-up within the first week. Visit the veterinarian to have your pet’s vaccine records reviewed and ensure you know the best options for food, exercise and preventative care. You can prevent many common diseases by keeping your pet at a healthy weight, current on flea, tick and heartworm prevention, fully vaccinated and on a highquality diet. Preventing diseases costs less money than treating them, so discuss any concerns you have with your veterinarian.

Photo courtesy of Getty Images Financial Considerations: Most pets come with annual veterinary bills between $200-500 and food bills between $200-400. Adopting a pet can provide cost savings, however, as fees at shelters and adoption events are typically lower than breeders and many

of these pets are already spayed or neutered. To ensure your pet is covered in case of emergencies, consider options like pet insurance or opening a designated savings account and depositing 5% of your pay each pay period. If you take out an insurance policy as soon as you adopt your pet, he

or she will not have any “preexisting” conditions excluded from your insurance plan. Find more tips for a successful pet adoption and locate upcoming adoption events in your community at petsmartcharities. org. Family Features

CVRep honors Lainie Kazan

Moderator Scott Khouri, Actress, singer Lainie Kazan, and David Cohan, VP of the board. Photo by Pat Krause. Story and Photos by Pat Krause CVRep held its first Luminary Luncheon this year to celebrate that honored Actress and singer Lainie Kazan. These luncheons are anticipated as guests get to mingle with the star and listen to a great Q&A about their lives. The Luncheon was held at the Agua Caliente Resort Casino in Rancho Mirage. Guests enjoyed a delicious lunch before the drawing of several raffle prizes. The moderator this year for Lainie Kazan was a life long friend Scott Khouri. Scott knew a lot of the many personal questions to ask her about her life and career. Lainie took to the stage and sat in the opposite chair, saying this was her better side to the delight of the guests with laughter. Lainie said she knew Scott for over 20 years. They spent many years as friends thru thick and thin, as she stated. Lainie mentioned she was just a young girl from Flatbush, and her mother was a significant influence in her life and career. She said she went to college with many a star of today, including Barbara Streisand. She was a great and funny storyteller. One of the questions was about when she was on Broadway as an understudy. She said she had hoped to one day be the star. One day the producer told her she would be going on as the star couldn’t make it. She called all her friends to come to see her, and they all showed up only to see the star come on stage after all. The next night the producer told her she would definitely be going on as the star. Still, she couldn’t tell anyone except her mother, who had Lainie’s list and called everyone anyway. She once posed for playboy, not knowing what it was all about and was disgraceful for a nice Jewish girl, more laughter from the guests. She stopped trying to glamourize herself and became just her, and people responded to that. She told about her time on Broadway, trying to be the character she was playing. She also mentioned that one of the worst parts of her life was when she was fired from a job. One of the funnier stories is when she was telling about how she worked for \ for the MOB, and they paid her

Warner Bros. ‘JOKER’ Is An Oscar Contender

This past Monday, the Motion Picture Academy announced the 2019 Oscar candidates for best picture, director, and actors. One film that garnered praise and nominations in all categories was “Joker,” starring Joaquin Phoenix in the title role. This marks the actor’s fourth Oscar nomination. Note: Phoenix has already won a Golden Globe for his performance. While this Joker is mad and evil, he is also touching and sympathetic, as played by Phoenix, who lost 45 pounds to play the role. He accomplished this by eating just one apple a day until he reached the desired weight. That’s enough to make anyone feel mad and bad. The Joker first made the scene in the 1940s as a comic book villain opposite the heroic Batman, aka Bruce Wayne. However, in “Joker,” written and directed by Todd Phillips, Phoenix stars as the mentally unstable Arthur Fleck, who still lives at home with his mother (Frances Conroy). He is being counseled by a social worker (Sharon Washington) who also monitors medications to

keep him on track. Part of his mental disorder includes uncontrollable fits of laughter. Despite his mental issues, he has a job as a clown. He not only entertains children in hospitals he also works as a sign spinner for a retail store on the mean streets of Gotham. His sign is stolen one afternoon by a group of rowdy boys. When he runs after them to retrieve the property, he is severely beaten. Despite this mishap, he remains sociable. However, his life changes dramatically after a fellow co-worker gives him a gun for protection. Unfortunately for Arthur, when the gun falls out of his pocket while he is entertaining at a children’s party, he’s fired. His ultimate career goal is to be a comic. He does stand up in local comedy clubs and eventually even gets the chance to appear on TV with talk show host Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro). But everything changes when he shoots a young subway rider who attacks him one night. At this point, his life takes a nosedive. “Joker” is dark, sometimes

creepy, and very well acted. “Joker” is rated R for strong bloody violence, disturbing behavior, language, and brief sexual behavior.

New Rule Removes Barriers to Dental Care for Low-Income NC Residents

By Desert Star Staff The State Board of Dental Examiners on Thursday is expected to approve a new rule that would loosen restrictions on dental hygienists, allowing them to deliver preventive care to patients without a dentist’s oversight. Supporters of the change -- including the director of the North Carolina Oral Health Collaborative, Dr. Zachary Brian -- say currently, hygienists cannot administer fluoride treatments or dental sealants used to prevent tooth decay until a dentist has clinically assessed a patient. Brian notes that few low-income children in the state are regularly visiting a dentist’s office. “They’re still working under the direction of a dentist, but the dentist would not be onsite with them, although he or she could choose to do that,” he explains. “But what this is really aimed at doing is allowing hygienists to go into a high-

needs setting such as a school or a nursing facility, assess a patient, and then deliver preventive oral health services.” In North Carolina, more than 38% of children entering kindergarten have already experienced tooth decay, according to the state Department of Health and Humans Services. Brian adds, these rates almost double in some racial, rural, and lowincome communities. Brian points out that tooth decay and disease in young populations can affect academic performance and well-being. “We lose about 51 million school hours every year across the U.S., due to unmet oral health needs,” he states. “If a child is in constant pain, it’s very difficult for him or her to, you know, concentrate on studies, and be present and learn.” Brian also urges parents to take a child’s complaints about mouth pain seriously.

More than one in four adults ages 20-64 have untreated dental cavities, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Kids are typically pretty resilient and pain-tolerate,” he states. “So, if a child is coming and saying they have tooth pain, they really have pain. So, there are a lot of downstream implications of

not having those oral health needs met earlier on.” In 2016, North Carolina completed its first oral health assessment of pregnant women and found less than half of the more than 450

women surveyed reported having dental insurance. The high cost of dental treatment was the single most common reason mothers-to-be gave for skipping dental visits.

U.S. Senate passes US-Mexico-Canada trade deal in another big win for Trump and Mexican counterparts in 2018, and languished in Congress since, despite repeated protestations from Trump. After passing the House with bipartisan support in December, it finally passed the Senate on Thursday, with 89 Senators voting in favor and ten opposing.

By Desert Star Staff The U.S. Senate has passed President Donald Trump’s United StatesMexico-Canada Agreement, despite the opposition of

several Democrats. The pact’s passage is a legislative victory for Trump ahead of his impeachment trial. The USMCA was agreed by Trump and his Canadian

Online responds: The agreement is a renegotiation of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), a deal that was widely criticized in the 1990s for allowing American manufacturers to move production to Mexico. The deal now only needs Trump’s signature to become law. For the president, its passage is the second legislative victory in as many days.

One of the most important trade deals ever made! Also suitable for China and our Wednesday marked the signing of the first part of a trade accord between the U.S. and China, a deal that pauses the two-year trade war between Washington and Beijing, and stipulates that China will increase its imports of American goods. Long-term relationship. 250 Billion Dollars will be coming back to our Country, and we are now in an excellent position for a Phase Two start. There has never been anything like this in U.S. history! USMCA NEXT Yet as the agreement passed, House Democrats appointed as prosecutors stood in the Senate and read the impeachment charges against Trump,

formally beginning his trial. Though the USMCA enjoyed bipartisan support in both houses of Congress, several Senate Democrats opposed its passage. Sens. Bernie Sanders (Vermont) and Chuck Schumer (New York) both gave the deal the thumbs down, citing a lack of climate protections in its text. Despite the improvements Democrats secured to better protect workers: I am voting against USMCA. Because it doesn’t address climate change, the greatest threat facing our planet. — Chuck Once signed by Trump, the USMCA will need to be approved by Canada. The House of Commons in Ottawa will debate the agreement in the coming weeks.

North Coast Rep Theatre Presents “Bloomsday”

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association Steven Dietz was among the five most produced playwrights in America during 2019. And now his latest play “Bloomsday,” is on stage at North Coast Repertory Theatre (NCRT), making its Southern California debut. The Solana Beach professional theatre, now in its 38th season of presenting quality entertainment to North County San Diego residents, offers something a little bit different with playwright Dietz’s comedy-fantasy “Bloomsday.” Life’s journeys are replete with choices we humans make every day. Bombarded with choices, many of which are made in haste without a lot input. On the other hand, many missed opportunities

have slipped away because of too much cogitation and hesitation, and not enough action on our part. “Bloomsday,” is a whimsical, magical, reflection of unrequited love that didn’t have to be. What if we could alter time in such a way as to manipulate that pesky time continuum? Playwright Dietz thought it might make for an interesting and entertaining evening in the theatre to attempt that leap of faith. What place of whimsy and magical fantasy to set such a play other than in Ireland, land of tall tales and fetching colleens, the land of O’Casey, and of James Joyce and his iconic, epic story “Ulysses,” which plays a part in this ‘what if’ love story. What better person to direct this non-linear, delightful comedy than Andrew Barnicle, native son of the Emerald Isle and a favorite

Hunter Saling and Rachel Weck. Photo by Aaron Rumley NCRT director, who was the Laguna Playhouse’s Artistic Director for twenty years. Director Barnicle is blessed with a cast of talented comedy practitioners who know their way around a witty

and sometimes tricky play in order to keep their audience engaged. Martin Kildare, as Narrator and Robert, is our guide/interlocutor who sets the story points along the way that keeps the story moving. Caithleen, a Dublin Tour guide (wonderfully played By Rachel Weck), meets Robert and chats him up, only to lose contact later on. Robbie, a young American of boundless energy played by Hunter Saling, is taken with Caithleen, but these two young people fail to connect, although there is interest on both sides. Timing, you see, always plays a part in the love equation of “what if.” To assist the audience in making this charming play work, the character of Cait, winningly played by Jacquelyn Ritz, appears as the older Caithleen, and Martin Kildare reappears as the older Robbie. It may sound a bit confusing, I’ll admit, but in the capable hands of director

Barnicle and this talented cast, and as Sherlock Holmes always said to Dr. Watson, “Patience Watson. All will be revealed.” would be my admonition also. The technical credits at NCRT are always first-rate. The sets designs of Marty Burnett are legendary, and the light designs of Matt Novotny compliment Burnett’s designs over their years of working as a team. The costume designs are by Renatta Lloyd, with Hair and Wig designs by Peter Herman, and Props by Phillip Korth. A special kudo goes to Sound and Projection designer Aaron Rumley whose creative designs over the seasons have lent an authenticity that enriches the overall experience of the audience. Mr. Rumley also stage manages this production. “Bloomsday” is a charming production that performs at North Coast Repertory Theatre in Solana Beach and runs through February 2, 2020.
