Tell me more: A truly historic and essential recording, Ella Fitzgerald: Live At Montreux 1969 is being released by Mercury Studios and will be available on audio CD and LP on Jan. 20, 2023. Originally released on DVD in 2005, this marks the first time this concert recording is being made available on audio formats. Live At Montreux 1969 captures the “First Lady of Song” in the first of her five legendary performances at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Fitzgerald’s breathtaking singing and complete command of a
BY ROBERT KINSLERdiverse set of 14 songs thrills with every note. There are classic jazz favorites already familiar to audiences of the time (“Give Me The Simple Life,” “I Won’t Dance,” “That Old Black Magic”), as well as her artful versions of classic rock material (including a soulful take on Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love” and joyful reading of The Beatles’ “Hey Jude”). Her signature scat delivery is featured on the dazzling “Useless Landscape,” a number further defined by the virtuoso playing of pianist Tommy Flanagan (along with bassist Frank De La Rosa and drummer Ed Thigpen). Her bewitching version of Dionne Warwick’s “This Girl’s In Love
With You” and an explosive performance of “A Man And A Woman” are other highlights on the enthralling collection. The concert encore includes the impressive rapid-fire “Scat Medley” and beautiful

Tell me more: Before I slipped I Can Almost See Houston in my CD player I had never heard of country music singer Howdy Glenn. Indeed the new release (available Jan. 20 via Omnivore Recordings) is the first-ever collection of songs from Glenn available on audio CD and it’s a wonderful introduction to the talented California artist. Featuring all known recordings from Glenn, an impressive array of 23 selections recorded between 1975 and 1980 span the 78-minute disc. As detailed in Scott B. Bomar’s instructional liner notes, Glenn was among a
handful of Black country music artists who made a mark on the national charts or the public consciousness in the 20th century. A full-time firefighter in Southern California, Glenn won the 1974 “Trucker’s Jamboree” at the Hollywood Palladium and scored a recording career; his wonderful cover of Willie Nelson’s “Touch Me” spent six weeks on the charts, and he was nominated for the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Male Vocalist award. But even the most talented of artists sometime never find the acclaim or national recognition they are owed. I Can Almost See Houston showcases Glenn’s top-tier vocals that draws comparisons with some of the 1970s greatest country music singers ranging from Charley Pride and George Jones to Merle Haggard. Standouts include the yearning title track, honky tonk-mining “You’ll Remember Me,” beautiful “Where Did The Years Go,” a soaring “That Lucky Old Sun” (an especially emotional performance), and tender “When You Were Blue and I Was Green.” Along with the previously-noted liner notes, the 20-page booklet that comes with the audio CD includes a wealth of historic photos and ephemera. Artist: Belle and Sebastian Title: Late
Developers (Matador Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Belle and Sebastian, The Zombies
Tell me more: Without fanfare indie Scottish troupe Belle and Sebastian released their 12th studio album on Jan. 13; Late Developers was issued a mere eight months after the release of 2022’s A Bit of Previous but features the expansive craft of a masterwork years in the making. Fans of Belle and Sebastian will be thrilled with the winning 11-track set that spans 42 minutes. The album’s highlights are plentiful; the 1960s-spirted opener “Juliet Naked” features band frontman Stuart Murdoch lamenting the folly of romance. Other early album standouts include the propulsive melody-fueled gem “Give A Little Time” featuring Sarah Martin on lead vocals, the wistful “When We Were Very Young,” the Baroque ballad “Will I Tell You a Secret,” and garage rocker “So In The Moment.” The album’s magic path continues courtesy of sonic nuggets like the shimmering “The Evening Star,” driving “When You’re Not With Me” and sumptuous “When The Cynics Stare Back From The Wall.” Information: belleandsebastian.com.

La June Montgomery Tabron, president, and CEO of the foundation, said it is essential for people to take action in their
own communities, doing what they can to minimize attitudes of polarization and division.
“Through the conversation, dialogue, and trust-building, relationships are forged that allow them to take collective action to improve systems and outcomes in their own community so that all children and families can thrive,” Tabron explained.
On Tuesday, MSNBC and Telemundo will broadcast town halls, and organizers are holding more than 160 events across the
nation, with 12 in California alone.
Tabron added people of all races and political persuasions are encouraged to participate.
“This healing process is very affirming to everyone,” Tabron pointed out. “It is not a ‘blameshame’ construct. And it’s about connecting across our humanity.”
The website gives dozens of concrete steps people can take to promote racial understanding in schools, workplaces, houses of worship, community groups, libraries, and more.
De La Soul Releases “The Magic Number”
By Desert Star StaffNEW YORK, NY – Today, De La Soul announces that the hit single “The Magic Number,” off their groundbreaking debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, is now available on all streaming platforms. The release comes a week after the group announced their entire back catalog will be released digitally for the first time on March 3, 2023.

In tandem with the release of “The Magic Number” on all streaming platforms today, a 7” vinyl, cassingle, and digital download are also available on wearedelasoul.com, distributed by Chrysalis
Records. The 7” has sold out in the U.S. but is still available in limited quantities internationally.
In 2021, “The Magic Number” was synched in the end credits of the blockbuster film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was labeled by Variety as “a rare runaway success in the pandemic film industry.” The song’s placement alluded to the three versions of Spider-Man that appeared in the film. For some younger viewers, it was their first time hearing De La Soul’s seminal track.
The Prince Paulproduced song was the opening track of 3 Feet High and Rising and set the
tone for the acclaimed 1989 album. The number three is a significant number to the trio, and the song’s lyrics, “Three is the magic number,” became a longstanding philosophy for them. De La Soul comprises three members; their debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, includes the number in its title, and the album was initially released on March 3, 1989. In celebration of the importance of “three” for De La Soul, the group’s entire catalog will be available for the first time on all streaming services on March 3, 2023.
A 7” (sold out in the U.S.) cassingle and single digital download are also available on wearedelasoul.com.

By Desert Star StaffGroups that fight hunger say they’re “deeply disappointed” in the new budget proposal released Tuesday by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Last year, the Legislature approved $40 million to expand food assistance to low-income people over age 55, regardless of immigration status. But now, the governor
wants to delay it until 2027.
Betzabel Estudillo, director of engagement for the group Nourish California - part of the Food 4 All Campaign - said she hoped the California Food Assistance Program would be expanded starting next year.
“It’s just not what we were expecting, considering how much California immigrants struggle to access the food
they need,” said Estudillo. “With inflation and the high cost of food, immigrant families are hurting right now. “
The governor’s budget projects a more than $22 billion gap in the next fiscal year.
Right now, the California Food Assistance Program provides income-eligible, legal immigrants with a monthly electronic benefit transfer

Estudillo said the “Food 4 All” coalition had also asked for $548 million a year to include Californians age 54 and under in the program regardless of immigration status.
But that wasn’t part of the governor’s initial proposal.
“We’re committed to working with the legislative leadership and the governor’s office,” said Estudillo, “to ensure that all Californians, regardless of age or immigration status, have timely access to the food they need. No exceptions, no exclusions.”
Expanding the program to income-eligible immigrants over age 55 would cover 75,000 people.
Last year, the Legislative Analyst’s Office estimated that 690,000 and 840,000 Californians would meet the income requirements if the program was expanded to all ages.

We have an astrologically auspicious week ahead, Mercury stations direct, Wednesday, January 18 (8 degrees Capricorn). Friday, January 20, the Sun enters the sign of humanity and the new era (Aquarius). The new moon in Aquarius (1.33 degrees) is Saturday. And Sunday, always occurring at the new moon of the new year, Chinese New Year begins. Venus joins Saturn (a restructuring of values, laws and monetary system) on Sunday. And Sunday evening, most importantly, Uranus (revelations, revolution, anchoring new rhythms on Earth, etc.) turns stationary direct. All that remained in the shadow world, comes into the light. It is a very promising week for humanity, our country and the truth. In the sky, till the 21st of April, when Mercury again retrogrades, we ae relatively free of retrogrades. Humanity charges forward.
Chinese New Year of 2023 is the Black Water Rabbit. Black signifies the water element. It is the feminine (yin) water (black) rabbit year. Yin signifying rain, cold water, ponds, rivers, streams, brooks (possibly overflowing). In Chinese astrology, there are twelve animals and five elements for each animal. That means there are five types of rabbits (or every animal) based on the element. The five elements (metal, water, wood, fire, earth) are given colors (white, black, green, red, and brown). A person’s (and year’s) characteristics are determined by the birth year’s animal and element.
Black Water rabbit years – 1903, 1963, 2023. Other elements/rabbit years - 1915 (my father), 1927, 1949,
RISA’S STARS
1951, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2035. Einstein, 1879, was an earth rabbit.
Those born in rabbit years are vigilant, witty, quick-minded and ingenious. Rabbits are harmonious, gentle, quiet, elegant, and alert. They are also quick, skillful, kind, patient, and very responsible. Often reluctant to reveal thoughts and feeling to others, they are trustworthy and faithful to those around them. Female rabbits have pure hearts.
The last black water rabbit year was 1963, the year Kennedy was killed (60 years ago and I remember that day). This year (2023, also a black water rabbit year), we can understand the significance of Dylan’s words “Don’t worry, Mr. President...help’s on the way”. (in the song Murder Most Foul, 2020). What goes around, comes around in astrological timing.
ARIES: Below that risky and sometimes precarious behavior, there’s a very generous spirit within that emerges more and more in the coming year. It’s the spirit of comforting others, loving and nurturing them. This is different for you. You will sense the undercurrents of need in everyone and in the world. You will understand vulnerability more. You begin to heal others. You remember.
TAURUS: More and more ideas and information are impressed upon your mind. You find yourself for hours and hours studying and absorbing data needed for health and well-being of self and others. You store it away for future use; possibly consider attending homeopathic, naturopathic and herbal schools of healing. You reshape the information; you write and teach to those in need. You
become the Messenger.
GEMINI: You are always Mercury, the swift-footed Hermes, the courier. There’s a sense of being expanded mentally with Jupiter now in Aries. Your senses, too, feel finally on solid ground, backed with the knowledge of the truth. Now you need natural settings (nature, the most balanced of kingdoms). You need more comfort than usual, things artistic, too, informing you that spirit is within matter…everywhere, always, all the time. Introduce yourself to the Devas.
CANCER: Many people admire your courage. Perhaps you don’t think you have any. But truly you do. After circling tentatively to see if it’s safe, you often quietly reach out to the edges of new experience. You are curious about all things new; yet seek all that’s traditional to surround all that’s new. Sometimes you’re a trailblazer. You don’t think so? Cancer is a cardinal sign and cardinal energy initiates new realities, bringing knowledge forth that changes life itself. You are more than you realize.
LEO: Some important questions. Do you know the definition of empathy? Do you sometimes feel compassion for others? Do you use your innate creative abilities in daily work? In the months to come you will feel a greater depth of faith. What is faith? Esoterically defined, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.” Many people have faith in you and in your leadership. Cultivate heart felt leadership.
VIRGO: You have an inner calling that focuses, instructs and directs your life. You know there are many paths to God. You respect them all. You never
allow your beliefs to shine brighter than others’. Stepping out into unknown lands (realities, ideas, etc.) allows you to disengage from acceptable patterns into that which is new, exciting and innovative. That which is new is needed for the new culture and civilization. The new world gestates within you. You are to bring order and organization to humanity, along with the reality of the Soul.
LIBRA: You know exactly what you want and how to get it. You work hard, are wise, constant, practical and resourceful. You seem to be creating permanent structures in your life. What are your choices based upon? What principles? Do you know the definition of the word “principle”? Principles and Laws are important words for the new Aquarian era. It will have both useful tradition along with many alternatives. In all your realized successes, seek to be understanding above all.
SCORPIO: You will want to place yourself where you gain knowledge of deep spiritual concepts and philosophies. You will study step by step and then in an instant, leap into a new reality! In the meantime, it’s important to travel to places with new foods, languages, depths of color and many of the arts. Study mountain climbing, horses, religions, archeology, endurance sports. Begin a spiritual journey across mountains and countries. New states of possibility then appear.
SAGITTARIUS: You will begin to perceive more deeply into all things hidden, seeing the inner essence of life. This is a gift & must be used for the good, the beautiful and to cultivate deeper compassion. Realize you will
need to handle, in the upcoming year, extreme energies, intense and forceful. Call upon wisdom to handle these forces. Do not misuse them. You seek mysteries, things sacred, mystical and occult. Your original faith returns. You understand it now. Extend help to others.
CAPRICORN: You seek all things stable and steady, moving toward restoring health, balancing life, friends, partnership, responsibilities. You weigh all options, poised within multiple realities. You create harmony and beauty, turning your gifts into ways that help others. You seek to right wrongs. You are an artist. Art is one of the paths of yoga. Do you know the original definition of yoga? And its many paths? You are “yoga” itself. And beauty is a hidden path to God.
AQUARIUS: It’s important to maintain daily, weekly, monthly routines and rhythms, so that you strengthen yourself and feel efficient, effective and productive. Rhythm becomes an important value and life standard. It stabilizes us. Aquarius is a friend to all of humanity, forgetting themselves, always looking at what humanity needs. Your heart always asks, “How can I help?” Aquarius offers deep insights into already accepted systems. However you add the more spiritual approach. You are a Server.
PISCES: You seek to understand the purpose of royalty, past and in the future. You recognize royalty’s responsibilities, the hope they must instill into humanity who looks to and relies on them. Royalty’s responsibility is to lead. You realize the need for Right Leadership, the cultivation of right knowledge and thought, having compassion and confidence. You also know how to renew one’s spirit, Through play, celebrations, interactions, dance, theater and the arts. These renew the spirit. You see many paths ahead. You choose the highest and brightest.

[This is the fourth and final installment of this series, which previously addressed directors, homeowners, and managers]
As the association’s service provider, I resolve to:
NUMBER ONE:
1. Follow the Golden Rule. [Treat others how I want to be treated.]
PROPOSALS:
2. Give the association the best proposal I can. If the association’s request for proposal omits important elements of the work, I will add those elements to my proposal and disclose the proposed extra cost now instead of charging it later as an “extra.”
3. Tell the HOA if they really don’t need my services right now.
4. Disclose any less expensive (and possibly less profitable) alternatives they didn’t consider.
5. Explain my recommendations, and never tell them just to “trust me.”
6. Promise only what I know I can deliver.
7. Not seek a contract of more than one year in length unless the work cannot be completed in less than a year.
KNOWLEDGE:
8. Pursue professional
designations and attend seminars to keep current.
9. Take CAI’s Educated Business Partner course to ensure my understanding of the unique needs and characteristics of common interest communities.
SERVICE:
10. Promptly answer the board’s or manager’s questions.
11. Explain my company’s charges, taking no offense.
12. Take instruction only from the manager or from the person designated by the contract as my point of contact.
13. Immediately alert management if a homeowner, even a committee chair or director, interferes with the work.
14. If any work outside the contract becomes necessary, I will in writing quote a price in advance and will first obtain written authorization.
15. Not attempt to perform work outside my expertise and immediately advise the association of additional expertise needed.
COMMUNITY RELATIONS
16. Be courteous to all residents, being aware that my work might occasionally be disruptive to them.
17. Provide regular updates to the board and management on major projects.
18. Volunteer at no charge to attend occasional “town hall” meetings to update the membership on the progress of major projects.
19. Ensure that the work areas are clean and

safe for residents at the end of each workday.
20. Not start work too early, nor end it too late, to avoid disturbing residents.
ETHICS:
21. Not offer commissions or personal incentives of any kind to directors or managers and will promptly refuse and disclose to the board any requests for improper benefits from managers, directors, or committee members.

Takata Airbag Deaths
By Desert Star StaffIt’s a brand new year - and consumer auto safety groups are hoping to avoid further deaths from faulty Takata airbags - by raising awareness about the ongoing recall.
More than 41 million vehicles from 34 brands from 2000 to 2018 are affected.
Michael Brooks, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, warned that the ammonium nitrate that causes the airbags to inflate has become unstable and can explode with even a minor fender bender.
“So when there’s an airbag trigger,” said Brooks, “that means that you’re just going to have an uncontrolled explosion that, instead of pushing the gas into the airbag, simply destroys the entire housing of the airbag and shrapnel out towards the
driver or the passenger and causes injuries or death.”

34 deaths have been recorded worldwide since the recall started in 2018, with 25 in the U.S. - five in 2022 alone.
Fiat Chrysler issued a “stop drive” warning for 276,000 vehicles in November for model years 2005 through 2010 Dodge Magnums, Chargers, and Challengersas well as model years 2005 through 2010 Chrysler 300s.
At least two of the deaths this year involved the 2010 Dodge Chargers.
Brooks called these vehicles ticking time bombs that get more dangerous as time goes on. So he said he wants states to require owners to get the defect fixed.
“Maybe states need to step in,” said Brooks, “and refuse registration to

Why Is Insulin Costing So Much In The USA?
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230118190145-78b8e6c919eb9eaadb45d2363c81594f/v1/5520e93e6fec38a7d9dbc16da9030fe7.jpeg)
Insulin is a lifesaving drug. This synthetic medicine is produced by bacteria or yeast and helps regulate blood sugar levels. When the sugar levels in the blood decrease, insulin releases stored sugar in the liver. The pancreas produces several hormones. Beta cells, which are specialized in the body, produce insulin. When blood sugar level increases, the beta cells release insulin into the blood. Glucose is the primary source of energy for most cells. If there is not enough insulin, the cells will die.
In the past few years, insulin costs have increased significantly. For example, one
20-milliliter vial of insulin can cost over $1,500 today. That’s more than twice the price it used to be 15 years ago.
Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, and Sanofi are the leading insulin producers in the U.S. Each company has its own program to help patients lower their prices. For example, Novo Nordisk is offering the the$99Insulin program, which provides patients two packs of FlexPen/FlexTouch for $99.
In February, Lilly announced that it would stop raising its insulin prices for Humalog. Last year, Lilly also began releasing its first generic insulin.
Meanwhile, the FDA has approved several generic
versions of the insulins that it has previously approved. These include insulin glulisine injection, Adlyxin, and Apidra. These products are available to those with health insurance or through co-pay assistance programs. People with high deductibles or no insurance are also eligible for discounts.

There have been multiple investigations by state attorneys general into insulinprice hikes. One suit, filed by the state of California, accuses insulin manufacturers of colluding to raise prices.
According to the suit, the average patient pays $900 monthly for insulin. The lawsuit also alleges that the price of insulin has increased by 1.527% since 1997.
Many of the prominent

manufacturers have unexpired patents. As a result, their intellectual property rights are protected, even if their insulin product isn’t selling well. Despite these challenges, they continue to tweak their insulin products to prolong their exclusivity rights.
Rob Bonta, California Attorney General
For decades, big pharmaceutical companies have artificially increased the price of insulin, a lifesaving drug for over 30 million diabetics, by over 600%. It’s unfair — and it’s also illegal. That’s why, this week, we filed a lawsuit against the largest insulin makers in the world — Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, and Sanofi — along with the nation’s largest pharmacy benefit managers
for breaking the law and deceiving the public when they aggressively hiked the cost of the lifesaving drug.
The lawsuit states that the insulin market in the United States is an oligopoly. It cites that the three leading manufacturers control almost 90 percent of the world’s supply of insulin. This control has allowed the six companies in the industry to systematically raise the list price of their insulin products.
Approximately 34 million people are living with diabetes in the United States. About a third of them report having difficulty meeting their household expenses. Meanwhile, an estimated 1.5 million remain diagnosed annually.

The Dallas Cowboys humiliate the great Tom Brady (45), knocking him and his Tampa Bay Buccaneers out 31-14 in the last game of the wild card round!
The Brady Dismantling! It’s over for the quarterback legend, seven Super Bowl winners, and considered the Greatest Footballer of All Time.
And the cowboys break a blatant negative series! Dallas hadn’t won an away playoff in 30 years (eight games).
Celebrities in the stands: Hollywood megastar Tom Cruise is there, as is wrestling legend Hulk Hogan!
We have Axel, and the Americans have Dalton! Dalton Schultz with the first touchdown of the game. For the cowboys! After a pass from quarterback Dak Prescott. There is no extra point. Brett Maher shoots past...
Very bitter: A pass from Brady into the end zone is intercepted. The legend doesn’t come into play yet...
Tricked! Prescott fakes a transfer, hides the ball behind his own body — and runs for a touchdown! Exciting thing!
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230118190145-78b8e6c919eb9eaadb45d2363c81594f/v1/05244650ebb7001b34fa6dba0323fb13.jpeg)
But what the heck is going on with Brett Maher? The cowboys’ kicker shoots past again.
The next shocker for Brady! Prescott fires the egg back to Schultz for another touchdown. 18:0!
AND THEN THIS! Maher also shoots up the third extra point! And outside, the TV cameras catch Quarterback Prescott cursing loudly because the Cowboys are giving away three safe points...
For the first time since 2001, Brady goes into the break with 0 points in a playoff game...
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230118190145-78b8e6c919eb9eaadb45d2363c81594f/v1/0899f1df28276241c8005d5b4518d54e.jpeg)
Then, Dallas shows off the Bucs! Prescott Missile on Michael Gallup — Touchdown!
Man, man, Maher! Maher gets another chance — and misses again! For the fourth time! This is unbelievable!
With the last second of the third quarter, Brady knocks one out! Wide pass to Julio Jones. Touchdown! Brady takes a chance and goes for the two-point conversion. But it doesn’t work! At least 6:24.
What a thing! Prescott fires the egg at CeeDee Lamb. Touchdown! And on the fourth
try! But instead of going for a miss-Maher and a field goal, the Cowboys take a risk. That is the fourth touchdown pass for the Dallas playmaker! Then Maher is allowed to get an extra point — and scores!!!
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230118190145-78b8e6c919eb9eaadb45d2363c81594f/v1/a7ca9b23fa6f6304ef73033189f8e93c.jpeg)
Shock in the final stages: Bucs player Russell Gage is seriously injured in a hit with 2:55 minutes to go and needs treatment on the field.
Teammates and opponents stand next to them with worried faces. Then, when he is driven off, the pros applaud.
After all, Cameron Brate creates a touchdown for the Buccaneers shortly afterward. Add to that the two-point conversion by Mike Evans. Nevertheless, it is no longer enough for the turning point.
Brady is out —
what’s next for him?
He hasn’t announced anything yet! In August, he will be 46 years old. Nevertheless, many experts assume he will likely continue playing and add another season. There are tons of rumors as to where he might play! Las Vegas Raiders, Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints, and New England Patriots are traded.

In his first address as U.S. House Speaker, Congressman Kevin McCarthy from Bakersfield announced that he wants to combat what he describes as “woke indoctrination” in public schools. But a new poll shows that very few voters consider that an urgent priority. A survey commissioned by the American Federation of Teachers finds that improving students’ academic achievement rates are much higher.
Guy Molyneux, pollster, and partner at Hart Research Associates, said the hotbutton issues, like so-

By Desert Star StaffCATHEDRAL CITY, CA
¬– Celebrate the sights, sounds, and tastes of the state of Jalisco, Mexico at the 7th Annual Taste of Jalisco Festival, February 3 -5, 2023 in downtown Cathedral City. Festivities kick off Friday, February 3, beginning at 4 pm and feature the raising of the flags, a proclamation reading from Cathedral City Mayor Rita Lamb, followed by live entertainment and the opening of the carnival and tequila tasting garden.
In addition to a giant Ferris wheel offering views of the entire city and surrounding area, the three-day carnival will feature rides, amusements,

And it is meaningful to continue this tradition of accessibility and joy,” says Briana Sapp, SoCal Museums President and Director of Marketing
and Communications at Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. “We hope this will be an opportunity to revisit old favorites and see new exhibitions or try somewhere new.”
The Free-for-All also serves as a reminder that free visitor days are available year-round at museums across Southern California. A calendar of free days can be found at socalmuseums.org/free.
This offer is for general museum admission only and does not apply to specially ticketed exhibitions. Regular parking fees apply at each museum. Consult individual museum websites for hours, directions, and other visitor information.
